The uptake of beta-carotene by reproductive tissues and the effects of beta-carotene on reproductive function in the dog are unknown. We studied the uptake of beta-carotene by blood, corpus luteum, and uterine endometrium and the role of dietary beta-carotene in influencing ovarian steroid and uterine protein production during the estrous cycle in the dog. Mature female Beagle dogs (n = 56) were fed diets containing 0, 2, 20, or 50 mg of beta-carotene daily for approximately 6 wk before estrus detection. Blood was sampled at regular intervals from estrus through d 45 after ovulation (d 0 = ovulation), when laparotomy was performed. The ovaries were obtained for the isolation of corpus luteum. The uterus was flushed with phosphate-buffered saline and the endometrium obtained by scraping. Beta-carotene was not detectable in plasma, corpus luteum, or endometrium of unsupplemented dogs. However, beta-carotene and alpha-carotene in plasma, corpus luteum, and uterine endometrium increased in a dose-dependent manner. Alpha-carotene made up a high percentage of total carotenoids even though the alpha-carotene content in the dietary source was very low. Dogs fed 50 mg of beta-carotene had significantly higher concentrations of plasma progesterone between d 12 and 26 compared with unsupplemented dogs. Dietary beta-carotene did not influence plasma estradiol-17beta and total uterine proteins. Therefore, beta-carotene is absorbed into plasma, corpus luteum, and uterine endometrium of dogs. Furthermore, dietary beta-carotene increased plasma progesterone concentrations during the estrous cycle. It is possible that dietary beta-carotene may improve reproductive function in the canine.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a dopamine antagonist, domperidone, in nonpregnant, reproductively cycling heifers consuming endophyte-infected (EI) fescue diets. Thirty crossbred heifers (Angus x Holstein or Hereford x Holstein) were assigned to one of three treatment groups (n = 10); endophyte-free (EF) fescue diet, EI fescue diet, or endophyte-infected diet and treated with domperidone (EID). Heifers fed EI diets had decreased weight gains compared with heifers fed EF or EID (P < 0.05) during a 21-d treatment period. Ovarian structures were monitored via transrectal ultrasound to determine follicle size and day of ovulation. Blood plasma samples were collected daily and analyzed for progesterone concentration to determine luteal function. Heifers ingesting EI diets had estrous cycles of shorter duration and lower mid-cycle progesterone concentrations than heifers in the EF or EID treatments (P < 0.05). Ovaries from a subset of heifers in each group (n = 3 per group) were harvested and in vitro secretion of progesterone from luteal tissue extracts was determined. No differences in progesterone concentrations were detected among luteal tissue incubates (P > 0.05). These results suggest that domperidone supplementation of heifers consuming EI fescue may ameliorate certain symptoms of fescue toxicosis.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of immunization with bovine luteinizing hormone receptor (LH-R) on ovarian function of cats. ANIMALS: 9 adult female domestic cats. PROCEDURE: 7 cats were immunized with 0.5 mg of LH-R encapsulated in a silastic subdermal implant (3 x 10 mm); 2 served as control cats. Receptors had 80% specific binding to 125I-human chorionic gonadotropin with a binding capacity of 2,682 pM/mg. Cats received booster injections of LH-R. Cats were induced to ovulate with luteinizing hormone (LH) releasing hormone on day 345. Samples of venous blood and vaginal cells were collected through day 395. Observation of estrus behavior continued until day 516. Serum concentrations of estradiol, progesterone, thyroid gland hormones, LH, and LH-R antibody were determined. RESULTS: LH-R antibody was detected in the sera of immunized cats within 21 days after implantation. Detection of LH-R antibody was associated with suppression of serum progesterone to < or = 0.5 ng/mL during the study period, compared with concentrations of 5 to 10 ng/mL in control cats. Immunized cats did not display signs of estrus. Release of LH after administration of LH-releasing hormone indicated an intact hypothalamic-pituitary axis but poor corpus luteum function. Serum estradiol concentrations remained between 30 to 40 pg/mL in immunized and control cats. With the decrease antibody titers, hormone concentrations returned to a pattern consistent with that during fertility. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Active immunization with LH-R suppressed corpus luteum function in cats. The effect was reversible. An LH-R-based antifertility vaccine may have clinical application in other vertebrates.  相似文献

Changes in follicular and luteal structures were assessed and concentrations of estradiol and progesterone were measured in 13 Hereford X Angus suckled beef cows during resumption of estrous cycles. Transrectal ultrasonography was used to monitor follicular size, ovulation, and formation and regression of the corpus luteum (CL). The interval from parturition to first postpartum ovulation (FO) was 82 +/- 4.7 d. Serum progesterone remained low before FO. One cow exhibited standing estrus, two cows showed other signs of estrus, and 10 displayed no signs of behavioral estrus preceding FO. All cows exhibited standing estrus before the second postpartum ovulation (SO). All cows had a short luteal phase after FO, with an average interval of 8.5 +/- .2 d between FO and SO. Concentrations of estradiol in serum during the 8 d preceding ovulation were similar before FO and SO. Maximal diameter of the preovulatory follicle was similar before FO and SO. However, the ovulatory follicle was larger in diameter at 2 d (P = .02) and 3 to 8 d (P less than .005) before FO than before SO. The time from detection until ovulation was less (P = .005) for the ovulatory follicle preceding SO than for the follicle associated with FO (8.5 vs 10.2 d, respectively, SE = .4). The second-largest follicle was larger (P less than .005) in diameter during the 8 d preceding the FO than before the SO. Insulin‐stimulating sow diets before mating improve piglet uniformity. We studied effects of nutritionally induced differences in insulin levels during the weaning‐to‐ovulation interval (WOI) on luteal development, progesterone secretion and pre‐implantation conceptus development and uniformity (d10). To create insulin contrasts, 32 multiparous sows were fed either a dextrose plus lactose containing diet (each 150 g/day) at 4 h intervals (DL treatment) or an isocalorically control diet (containing soybean oil) at 12 h intervals (CTRL treatment) during the WOI. After ovulation, all sows received a standard gestation diet at 12 h intervals. Ovulation rate, plasma progesterone levels, pregnancy rate and embryo survival did not differ between treatments. CTRL sows had a higher total luteal weight (11.2 vs 9.7 g; p = 0.03) than DL sows. Conceptus diameter at d10 of pregnancy tended to be larger in CTRL sows (diameter: 7.1 vs 6.4 mm; p = 0.07). Conceptus uniformity was not influenced by treatment. Insulin area under the curve (AUC) and mean insulin during the WOI were positively related with mean progesterone (β values were 0.78 (ng/ml)/1000 μU and 0.14 (ng/ml)/(μU/ml) for AUC and mean, respectively; p < 0.05) and maximal progesterone (β values were 1.46 (ng/ml)/1000 μU and 0.27 (ng/ml)/(μU/ml) for AUC and mean, respectively; p < 0.05) levels during the first 10 days of pregnancy, but not with conceptus development and uniformity. In conclusion, high insulin levels during the WOI seem to be beneficial for progesterone secretion in sows, probably mediated through beneficial effects of insulin on follicle development.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine effects of dietary protein quality (casein [CA] vs corn gluten [CG]) and dietary lipids (corn oil [CO] vs oil blend [OB] rich in long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids [LCPUFAs]) on fatty acid composition in liver and adipose tissue after weight loss in overweight cats. ANIMALS: 24 ovariohysterectomized adult cats. PROCEDURE: Cats were allowed ad libitum access to a high-quality diet until they weighed 30% more than their ideal body weight. Cats were then randomly assigned to 1 of 4 weight-reduction diets (6 cats/diet) and were fed 25% of maintenance energy requirements per day. Diets consisted of CG-CO, CA-CO, CG-OB, and CA-OB, respectively, and were fed until cats lost weight and returned to their original lean body mass. Liver biopsy specimens and samples of perirenal, subcutaneous, and abdominal fat were obtained and analyzed for fatty acid content. RESULTS: Following weight loss, fatty acid composition of the liver and adipose tissue was primarily affected by protein quality in that cats fed CA had significantly higher percentages of 20:4(n-6) and 22:6(n-3) fatty acids than those fed CG. Cats fed the CG-CO diet had the lowest concentrations of LCPUFAs, suggesting that dietary lipids and protein quality each influence fatty acid composition in tissues. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: These data provide direct evidence that dietary protein quality alters fatty acid composition of tissues during weight loss in cats. The fatty acid patterns observed suggest that protein quality may alter fatty acid composition through modulation of desaturase activity.  相似文献

Eighteen cats were used to compare the urine acidifying properties of sodium bisulphate to phosphoric acid. Acidifying agents were added at one of three concentrations (0.4, 0.6, or 0.8%, as-is basis). Cats were offered a commercial diet to determine basal urinary pH, and then again for a 1 week period between blocks 1 and 2. Cats were acclimated to the diets for 6 days, and urine samples were collected on day 7 at 0, 4, and 8 h postfeeding to obtain pre- and postprandial urinary pH. Intakes of diets containing sodium bisulphate tended (P < 0.07) to be lower than intakes of diets containing phosphoric acid. Cats consuming the 0.8% phosphoric acid diet had higher (P < 0.05) food intakes than cats consuming either the 0.4 or 0.6% phosphoric acid-containing diets. There was significant (P = 0.01) linear and quadratic response for food intake in cats consuming the sodium bisulphate-containing diet. Cats consuming the 0.4 and 0.8% phosphoric acid-containing diets tended (P = 0.07) to have higher water intakes than cats consuming the 0.6% phosphoric acid-containing diet. There were no differences (P > 0.05) in urine pH and specific gravity between cats fed the different acidifier types. Cats consuming the 0.6% phosphoric acid-containing diet tended (P = 0.07) to have a higher urine pH 8 h post-feeding than cats consuming the 0.4 and 0.8% phosphoric acid-containing diets. Urine pH was highest at 4 h post-feeding except for cats fed the 0.4% sodium bisulphate- and the 0.6% phosphoric acid-containing diets. No differences (P > 0.05) between acidifiers were found in faecal score or in faecal dry matter and organic matter concentrations. A quadratic response was detected in faecal score for cats consuming the phosphoric acid-containing diets. Cats consuming the 0.6% phosphoric acid diet tended (P = 0.06) to have a lower faecal score than cats consuming the 0.4 and 0.8% phosphoric acid diets. For faecal dry matter, a linear trend was detected in cats consuming the sodium bisulphate (P = 0.08) and phosphoric acid-containing (P = 0.04) diets. Sodium bisulphate and phosphoric acid generally behaved in a similar fashion when incorporated in dry cat diets.  相似文献

Four groups of sixteen gilts were each individually fed diets containing 0, 3, 6 or 9 ppm pure zearalenone starting the day after they exhibited puberal estrus. They were artificially inseminated twice at subsequent heat periods. Fifteen of the 30 gilts not exhibiting estrus within 80 d of the start of the experiment were slaughtered and their reproductive tracts examined. The remaining 15 gilts that did not return to estrus were fed the control diet after 80 d to determine the effect on return to estrus. Eighty-eight percent of the gilts fed 6 or 9 ppm zearalenone became pseudopregnant as confirmed by plasma progesterone levels and(or) examination of their reproductive tracts. However, three animals fed the two higher levels of zearalenone conceived and farrowed. No conclusions can be made regarding the effect of zearalenone on litter size due to the relatively few numbers of gilts fed the higher levels of zearalenone that farrowed. Gilts fed diets containing 6 or 9 ppm zearalenone returned to estrus spontaneously (n = 7) or following injection of cloprostenol (n = 8) approximately 45 d after the removal of zearalenone from their diet.  相似文献

Receptors for estrogen and progesterone were measured in cytosols prepared from specimens of canine endometrium obtained at late proestrus, day 4 of estrus, day 2 of diestrus, and at 10 day intervals from days 10 through 80 of diestrus. Twenty nine adult bitches were used, with 2 to 4 dogs used at each time point. Concentrations of estradiol receptors measured in endometrial cytosols from late proestrus through day 10 of diestrus were similar (mean +/- SEM: 9.9 +/- 2.2, 10.5 +/- 1.2, 16.3 +/- 1.6, and 16.2 +/- 2.9 pmol/g of tissue at proestrus, day 4 of estrus, days 2 and 10 of diestrus, respectively). As serum concentrations of progesterone increased during early diestrus, the concentration of estradiol receptors decreased and were significantly (P less than 0.05) lower on days 30 (4.9 +/- 1.3 pmol/g of tissue) and 40 (3.7 +/- 0.6 pmol/g of tissue) of diestrus. After day 40 of diestrus, when serum concentrations of progesterone were approaching basal concentrations, the concentration of estradiol receptors increased and remained significantly (P less than 0.05) higher from days 60 to 80 of diestrus (day 60, 13.4 +/- 2.9; day 70, 15.7 +/- 1.7; day 80, 19.8 +/- 2.4 pmol/g of tissue). The present experiment was conducted to determine the influence of dietary fatty acids C18:2n-6 and C18:3n-3 on the modulation of intrauterine synthesis of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and F2alpha (PGF2alpha) during early pregnancy in pigs. Prostaglandin E2 in uterine fluid has been previously reported to be associated with embryo survival and development. Thirty-two Yorkshire-Landrace nulliparous gilts were randomly allocated to four diets containing 5% supplemental fat. The four dietary treatments were: HT, hydrogenated tallow (26.5% C16:0 and 54.8% C18:0); SO, sunflower oil (61.3% C18:2n-6); LO, linseed oil (50.4% C18:3n-3); and SO(CLA), a mixture of sunflower oil and conjugated linoleic acids to provide 20% CLA. Treatments started 2 d after the first pubertal estrus (d -21) and lasted for 36 d (slaughter), which was 15 d after the second estrus (d 0; insemination). Fatty acids and PGE2 were measured in the peripheral blood plasma on d -19, d -7, d 0, and d 14. Fatty acids in endometrial tissues and PGE2 and PGF2alpha in the uterine fluid collected on d 15 were also measured. Concentrations of fatty acids in the plasma reflected the content of fatty acids in the diet as early as d -7. From d -7, PGE2 concentrations in the plasma were higher in gilts fed SO compared with HT (P < 0.05). Plasma PGE2 concentrations were lower (P < 0.01) on d 14 in gilts fed LO compared with HT. Total PGF2alpha contents in the uterine fluid of gilts fed LO were more than 70% lower (P < 0.05) than for the HT group. A similar trend was observed for total PGE2 content and for the ratio PGF2alpha:PGE2, but the effect (LO vs HT) was less marked (P < 0.07 and P < 0.10, respectively). There was no effect of SO or SO(CLA) on total PGE2 contents in the uterine fluid. Dietary enrichment in C18:2n-6 and/or C18:3n-3 for early pregnant gilts can influence fatty acids in plasma and endometrial tissue and can modulate circulatory and intrauterine prostaglandins.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine effects of dietary lipid and protein on development of hepatic lipidosis (HL) and on physical and biochemical indices following rapid weight loss in cats. ANIMALS: 24 ovariohysterectomized cats. PROCEDURE: Cats were fed a high energy diet until they gained 30% of their ideal body weight and then randomly assigned to receive 1 of 4 weight-reduction diets (6 cats/diet) at 25% of maintenance energy requirements per day. Diets contained a low or high quality protein source and a lipid source deficient or sufficient in long chain essential fatty acids (LCEFA). Serum and plasma samples and liver biopsy specimens were obtained for biochemical analyses and determination of hepatic lipid content before and after weight gain and during and after weight loss. RESULTS: Irrespective of weight-reduction diet fed, all cats lost weight at a comparable rate (4.51 to 5.00 g/d/kg of obese body weight). Three cats developed hepatic lipidosis. Significant changes in plasma insulin, cholesterol, triglyceride, and serum glucose concentrations were detected after weight gain and weight loss in all diet groups, but values for these variables did not differ among groups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Cats can lose 25 to 30% of their obese body weight over 7 to 9 weeks without developing overt clinical signs of HL, provided that weight-reduction diets are highly palatable, contain a high quality protein, have a source of LCEFA, and are fortified with vitamins and microminerals. However, rapid weight loss may increase risk factors associated with development of diabetes mellitus.  相似文献

Daily changes in the plasma progesterone concentrations were determined in eight mares treated with intramuscular injections of 250 μg cloprostenol, a prostaglandin analogue, followed five days later by 2500 I.U. human chorionic gonadotropin. A second cloprostenol injection was given 14 days after the first; the mares were then inseminated on the third and fifth day of the subsequent estrus and a second injection of human chorionic gonadotropin was administered on the fifth day. The onset of estrus following the second cloprostenol treatment was synchronized beginning three to four days after treatment in all eight mares. All eight ovulated, five mares conceived and only four foaled. Evaluation of the progesterone profiles provided reliable indicators of luteolysis, ovulation and luteal function. Decreasing plasma progesterone concentrations were associated with cloprostenol induced luteolysis or preceded spontaneous onset of estrus. The plasma progesterone concentrations increased consistently after ovulation, and in the pregnant mares, the progesterone concentrations remained high during the first month after insemination.  相似文献

Myocardial taurine concentrations were measured in cats with cardiac disease and in healthy cats fed diets with various concentrations of taurine. Group 1 was composed of 26 cats with 3 categories of naturally developing cardiac disease: dilatative cardiomyopathy (group 1A), 10 cats; hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (group 1B), 9 cats; and volume overload (group 1C), 7 cats. These cats had been fed various commercial diets. Group 2 was composed of 40 healthy cats that had been fed diets varying in taurine concentration (0 to 1% taurine) for at least 2 years. Mean myocardial taurine concentrations did not differ significantly between group-1 cats with dilatative cardiomyopathy and those with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or volume overload. Cats in group 1A had a mean myocardial taurine concentration 3 times higher than healthy cats fed a taurine-free diet (P less than 0.002). Mean myocardial taurine concentrations did not differ significantly between group-1A cats and healthy cats fed a diet containing 0.02% taurine; group-1A cats had significantly lower mean myocardial taurine concentrations than did healthy cats fed a synthetic diet containing 0.05 or 1.0% taurine (P less than 0.001). Acute oral administration of taurine in 5 group-1A cats appeared to increase mean myocardial taurine concentrations, compared with similar cats not given taurine during treatment for cardiac failure. In group-2 cats, mean myocardial taurine concentrations increased directly with percentage of dietary taurine.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of carnitine (Ca) or taurine (Ta) supplementation on prevention of lipid accumulation in the liver of cats. ANIMALS: 24 adult cats. PROCEDURE: Cats were fed a weight-gaining diet sufficient in n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), low in long-chain n-3 PUFAs (n-3 LPUFA), and containing corn gluten for 20 weeks. Cats gained at least 30% in body weight and were assigned to 4 weight-reduction diets (6 cats/diet) for 7 to 10 weeks (control diet, control plus Ca, control plus Ta, and control plus Ca and Ta). RESULTS: Hepatic lipids accumulated significantly during weight gain and weight loss but were not altered by Ca orTa after weight loss. Carnitine significantly increased n-3 and n-6 LPUFAs in hepatic triglycerides, decreased incorporation of 13C palmitate into very-low-density lipoprotein and hepatic triglycerides, and increased plasma ketone bodies. Carnitine also significantly increased weight loss but without altering the fat to lean body mass ratio. Taurine did not significantly affect any variables. Diets low in n-3 LPUFAs predisposed cats to hepatic lipidosis during weight gain, which was further exacerbated during weight loss. Mitochondrial numbers decreased during weight gain and weight loss but were not affected by treatment. Carnitine improved fatty acid oxidation and glucose utilization during weight loss without correcting hepatic lipidosis. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The primary mechanism leading to hepatic lipidosis in cats appears to be decreased fatty acid oxidation. Carnitine may improve fatty acid oxidation but will not ameliorate hepatic lipidosis in cats fed a diet low in n-3 fatty acids.  相似文献

Prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) was injected on d 5, 8 or 11 postestrus in ewes to determine how stage of the estrous cycle would affect PGF2 alpha-induced changes in concentrations of ovarian and pituitary hormones and intervals to the onset of estrus and the preovulatory surge of luteinizing hormone (LH). Initial concentrations of progesterone and average values during the 12 h after PGF2 alpha were related positively to the day of cycle on which PGF2 alpha was administered. Patterns of decline in progesterone after injection of PGF2 alpha were similar among the 3 d. Concentrations of LH in plasma increased in a similar manner from 0 to 12 h in all ewes. After 12 h LH continued to increase, plateaued or declined in ewes treated on d 5, 8 or 11, respectively. Initial concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in plasma were related positively to day of treatment. After treatment with PGF2 alpha, FSH increased within 2 h on d 5 but declined by that time on d 8 or 11. Concentrations of estradiol following treatment did not vary with day. The onset of estrus and the preovulatory surge of LH occurred at 36 and 35, 40 and 45, and 48 and greater than 48 h in ewes treated on d 5, 8 or 11, respectively. It is concluded that: 1) the initial increase in LH is dependent on a decrease in plasma progesterone and 2) differences in patterns of secretion of gonadotropins before the preovulatory surge of LH might be caused by differences in progesterone or progesterone:-estradiol ratio when luteal regression is induced on different days of the estrous cycle.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to investigate the possibility of embryo transfer in the cat during the non-breeding season. Estrus was induced in 19/22 (86.4%) cats using a porcine pituitary gland preparation. Uterine horns were flushed in 5 cats 6-8 days after mating with expanded blastocysts being collected from 4 cats. One to nineteen blastocysts per cat were transferred to the uterine horns of 6 recipient cats in which ovulation had been induced with HCG. The time differences between time of ovulation in donor and recipient animals were 0.5 days earlier in the recipient (2 cats), 1 day later in the recipient (3 cats), and no difference (1 cat); conception occurred in all the recipients. The ratio of fetuses to transplanted embryos were 1/1, 1/2, 2/3, 2/6, 4/7, and 2/19, respectively. Fetal death occurred in 2 cats at days 22 and 25 and abortion occurred in 3 cats at days 34, 35 and 39. There was a delay in the expulsion of placentae in the animals that experienced fetal death on days 22 and 25, expulsion occurring on days 36 and 56, respectively. One cat was treated with progesterone and carried 2 fetuses to day 66; pregnancy was terminated by cesarean section. In conclusion, it was demonstrated that embryo transfer can be performed in cats in which estrus and ovulation have been induced with porcine pituitary gland preparation during the non-breeding season. However, luteal activity needs to be supplemented by exogenous progesterone administration to maintain pregnancy.  相似文献

RESULTS: Plasma total cholesterol concentration and concentration of lipoprotein fractions increased after weight gain, compared with baseline values. Weight loss resulted in a significant decrease in concentrations of all lipoprotein fractions except high density lipoprotein. High density lipoprotein concentration was significantly greater in cats fed diets containing an oil blend, compared with cats fed diets containing corn oil. Fatty acid synthesis after weight loss was below the detection limit of the measurement technique. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In cats undergoing rapid weight loss there is neither increased triglyceride synthesis nor decreased transport of very low density lipoproteins from the liver, suggesting that their involvement in the development of hepatic lipidosis may be minimal.  相似文献

Cats (Felis catus) maintain greater blood Se concentrations compared with dogs (Canis familiaris) and, unlike dogs, show no signs of chronic Se toxicity (selenosis) when fed dietary organic Se (selenomethionine) concentrations of 10 μg/g DM. This study investigated the response of cats and dogs to high dietary concentrations of sodium selenite and organic Se to determine differences in metabolism between both species. In 2 consecutive studies, 18 adult cats and 18 adult dogs of with equal numbers of each sex were fed a control diet (0.6 μg Se/g DM) or the control diet supplemented to 8 to 10 μg Se/g DM from Na(2)SeO(3) or organic Se for 3 wk. All animals were fed the control diet 1 mo before the start of the study and blood samples were taken on d 0 and 21. The Se balance was assessed during the final week and a liver biopsy was obtained on the final day of the study. Measurements included plasma Se concentrations, plasma glutathione peroxidise (GPx) activities, plasma Se clearance, Se intake, and urinary Se excretion. No clinical signs of selenosis were observed in the cats or dogs, and apart from Se clearance, form of Se had no effect on any of the measurements. Apparent fecal Se absorption was greater in the dogs fed both forms of Se, while greater plasma Se concentrations were observed in the cats on both the control and supplemented diet (P = 0.034). Cats fed the supplemented diets had lower hepatic Se concentrations (P < 0.001) and excreted more Se in urine (P < 0.001) compared with dogs. Furthermore, cats fed the Na(2)SeO(3) supplement had greater Se clearance rates than dogs (P < 0.001). There was no effect of species on plasma GPx activity. We conclude that cats can tolerate greater dietary Se concentrations as they are more efficient at excreting excess Se in the urine and storing less Se in the liver.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to evaluate estrus synchronization and conception rate after progesterone releasing intravaginal device (PRID) treatment from the early luteal phase in the presence or absence of estradiol benzoate (EB) in heifers. Heifers (n=11) were assigned randomly to two treatments; insertion of a PRID containing 1.55 g progesterone with a capsule attached including 10 mg EB (P+EB; n=6) and the PRID withdrawn the EB capsule (P-EB; n=5). The PRID was inserted into the vagina on Day 2 of the estrous cycle (Day 0 was the day of ovulation) and was left for 12 days. The proportion of heifers exhibiting standing estrus within 3 days after PRID removal was 83.3% (5/6) for the P+EB group, and 80.0% (4/5) for the P-EB group, respectively. Conception rate by artificial insemination on synchronized estrus was 80.0% (4/5) in the P+EB group, and 100% (4/4) in the P-EB treatment group, respectively. These results suggest that a PRID treatment from 2 days after ovulation for 12 days in the presence or absence of EB has an effect on the synchronization of estrus and produces a beneficial conception rate in heifers.  相似文献
