Serum samples were obtained from 602 calves (from 19 groups in four feedlots: three in Ontario, and one in Alberta) upon arrival at the feedlot and 28 d later. Of these calves, 202 developed bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and 400 did not develop BRD. Based on high antibody titers noted upon arrival, we infer that most calves were exposed to Haemophilus somnus prior to arrival at the feedlot. Within a group, calves with high titers on arrival had a reduced risk of developing BRD later. Most calves did not experience titer increases after arrival; however, calves that had stable or increasing titers had a relatively low risk of contracting BRD. The calves at greatest risk of BRD were those with titers on arrival of less than 6.8 units and subsequent titer decreases of more than 1 unit. The effects of both the titer on arrival and the titer change after arrival were stable when the serologic effects of a number of viruses and Mycoplasma agents were considered. Neither antibody titer on arrival nor titer change was related to weight gain differences among calves. Calves with BRD or calves with lower weight on arrival had decreased weight gains in the first 28-day feeding period. The high titers on arrival may have protected most calves against further infection with H. somnus. However, since the calves that developed BRD had large titer increases to a number of viruses and to Pasteurella haemolytica, while having decreased antibody titers to H. somnus, we infer that the existing antibodies were "used up" in combatting the agents, including H. somnus, which may have "caused" the BRD. Calves which were able to increase their antibody levels to H. somnus tended to have a reduced risk of BRD.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To measure antibody titers against bovine coronavirus (BCV), determine frequency of BCV in nasal swab specimens, and compare calves treated for bovine respiratory tract disease (BRD) between those given an intranasally administered vaccine and control calves. DESIGN: Randomized clinical trial. ANIMALS: 414 heifer calves. PROCEDURE: Intranasal BCV antigen concentration and antibody titer against BCV were measured on entry to a feedlot. Calves were randomly assigned to receive 3.0 mL of a modified-live virus vaccine against bovine enteric coronavirus and rotavirus or 3.0 mL of saline (0.9% NaCl) solution. Calves were confined to 1 of 2 pens, depending on vaccination status, for a minimum of 17 days of observation (range, 17 to 99). Selection of calves for treatment of BRD and scoring for severity of disease were done by veterinarians unaware of treatment status. RESULTS: Intranasal BCV (125/407 [31%]) and serum antibody titers > or = 20 against BCV (246/396 [62%]) were identified in calves entering the feedlot. Vaccination was associated with significant decrease in risk of treatment for BRD; intranasal BCV on entry to the feedlot was associated with increased risk of treatment. Univariate analysis revealed that control calves with intranasal BRD on entry to the feedlot and those with antibody titer < 20 were significantly more likely to be treated for BRD. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: These data provide further evidence of an association between BCV and respiratory tract disease in feedlot calves. An intranasally administered vaccine appeared to reduce risk of treatment for BRD.  相似文献

The efficacy of tulathromycin in decreasing the incidence of morbidity and mortality due to bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in 1,239 high-risk cattle was investigated at four US feedlots. Calves not exhibiting clinical signs of BRD received one of three treatments administered subcutaneously in the neck: physiologic saline at 0.02 ml/kg, tulathromycin at 2.5 mg/kg, or tilmicosin at 10 mg/kg. Each treatment group consisted of 413 calves. Calves with clinical signs of BRD and rectal temperatures of 104 degrees F or higher on days 1 through 14 were considered treatment failures (BRD morbidity). Nasopharyngeal swabs from saline-treated morbidities were submitted for isolation and identification of BRD organisms. Respiratory disease morbidity was highest in calves treated with saline and significantly (P < or = .0001) lower in calves administered tulathromycin or tilmicosin. Morbidity from BRD was significantly (P < or = .0001) higher in calves treated with tilmicosin than in calves treated with tulathromycin. Under conditions of this study, tulathromycin, given to calves at high risk of developing BRD, was significantly more effective in reducing BRD morbidity when compared to both saline- and tilmicosin-treated calves.  相似文献

Twenty four (24) healthy male Holstein calves (< 70 kg) were each experimentally infected by intrabronchial inoculation of 4.0 x 10(9) viable cells of Pasteurella haemolytica-AI (B122) at Time = 0 h. At 1 h following inoculation animals received either: 1) Sham treatment with sterile 0.85% saline SC (n = 12); or 2) a single injection of 10 mg tilmicosin per kg body weight (n = 12). Calves that were non-infected and tilmicosin-treated were also included for determining tilmicosin concentrations in serum and lung tissue at 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 24, 48, and 72 h (n = 3-per time). In the infected calves, response to therapy was monitored clinically. Serum samples were collected for determination of tilmicosin concentrations using HPLC. Any animal becoming seriously ill was humanely killed. Complete necropsy examinations were performed on all animals and included gross pathologic changes, bacteriologic analysis, histopathology, and determination of pulmonary concentrations of tilmicosin. Tilmicosin treated animals responded significantly better to therapy than saline-treated control calves. Clinical assessment of calves during the study indicated that tilmicosin-treated calves had significantly improved by T = 8 h compared to satine-treated animals (P < 0.05). At necropsy tilmicosin-treated calves had significantly less severe gross and histological lesions (P < 0.05) of the pulmonary tissue. Of the 12 saline-treated calves, 92% (11/12) had Pasteurella haemolytica-A1 in lung tissue, while of the tilmicosin-treated calves 0% (0/12) cultured positive for P. haemolytica. Mean (+/- standard error) serum tilmicosin concentrations in infected calves peaked at 1 h post-injection (1.10 +/- 0.06 micrograms/mL) and rapidly decreased to 0.20 +/- 0.03 microgram/mL, well below the MIC of 0.50 microgram/mL for P. haemolytica-A1 (B122), by 12 h. These serum concentrations were very similar to serum concentrations of tilmicosin in non-infected tilmicosin-treated calves. Lung tissue concentrations of the antibiotic were comparatively high, even at 72 h post-infection (6.50 +/- 0.75 ppm). Lung tissue concentrations at 72 h were significantly higher in experimentally infected calves than in non-infected tilmicosin-treated animals (P < 0.05). These data demonstrate that tilmicosin was effective in treating experimentally-induced pneumonic pasteurellosis as determined by alleviation of clinical signs, pathological findings at post mortem, and presence of viable bacteria from the lung. Concentrations substantially above MIC for P. haemolytica were present in lung tissue even at 72 h following a single subcutaneous injection of 10 mg tilmicosin per kg body weight.  相似文献

Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding protein present in both colostrum and secondary granules of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs). We hypothesized that supplemental LF enhances neutrophil function in neonatal calves. Newborn calves were assigned to receive colostrum (C), colostrum + LF (CLF, 1 g/kg), or milk replacer + LF (MRLF, 1 g/kg). Serum (LF and IgG) and whole blood (neutrophil isolation) samples were obtained prior to treatment (day 0) and at 24 hours and 9 days of age. Serum IgG concentrations (mean +/- SD) in C, CLF, and MRLF calves at 24 hours were 1,911 +/- 994 mg/dL, 2,181 +/- 625 mg/dL, and 0 mg/ dL, respectively. Serum LF concentrations in C, CLF, and MRLF calves on day 0 were 324 +/- 334 ng/mL (range 0-863 ng/mL), 135 +/- 158 ng/mL (range 0-429 ng/mL), and 318 +/- 337 ng/mL (range 0-964 ng/mL), respectively. LF concentrations in C, CLF, and MRLF calves at 24 hours were significantly higher (P < .05), at 1,564 +/- 1,114 ng/mL (range 335-3,628 ng/mL, 2,237 +/- 936 ng/mL (range 31-3,287 ng/mL), and 3,189 +/- 926 ng/mL (range 1,736-4,120 ng/mL), respectively. Cytochrome c reduction in opsonized zymosan-treated or phorbol ester-treated cells was not significantly affected by supplemental LF provided at birth. Oral LF is absorbed in calves but does not alter PMN superoxide production and does not alter IgG absorption.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate plasma concentrations of substance P (SP) and cortisol in calves after castration or simulated castration. ANIMALS: 10 Angus-crossbred calves. PROCEDURES: Calves were acclimated for 5 days, assigned to a block on the basis of scrotal circumference, and randomly assigned to a castrated or simulated-castrated (control) group. Blood samples were collected twice before, at the time of (0 hours), and at several times points after castration or simulated castration. Vocalization and attitude scores were determined at time of castration or simulated castration. Plasma concentrations of SP and cortisol were determined by use of competitive and chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassays, respectively. Data were analyzed by use of repeated-measures analysis with a mixed model. RESULTS: Mean +/- SEM cortisol concentration in castrated calves (78.88+/-10.07 nmol/L) was similar to that in uncastrated control calves (73.01+/-10.07 nmol/L). However, mean SP concentration in castrated calves (506.43+/-38.11 pg/mL) was significantly higher than the concentration in control calves (386.42+/-40.09 pg/mL). Mean cortisol concentration in calves with vocalization scores of 0 was not significantly different from the concentration in calves with vocalization scores of 3. However, calves with vocalization scores of 3 had significantly higher SP concentrations, compared with SP concentrations for calves with vocalization scores of 0. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Similar cortisol concentrations were measured in castrated and control calves. A significant increase in plasma concentrations of SP after castration suggested a likely association with nociception. These results may affect assessment of animal well-being in livestock production systems.  相似文献

Seven hundred fifteen crossbred (primarily British) calves purchased in southern Oklahoma and northern Texas auction barns were received at the Willard Sparks Beef Research Center, Stillwater, OK, and used to study effects of duration (days) of vitamin E feeding during a 42-d receiving period on animal performance, health, and serum cholesterol and vitamin E concentrations. Upon arrival, calves were blocked by load (seven loads), sorted by BW (light, n = 4 pens per load; and heavy, n = 4 pens per load), and assigned randomly to one of four dietary treatments (n = 2 pens per load; 14 pens per treatment). Experimental diets were formulated to provide 2,000 IU.calf(-1).d(-1) of supplemental vitamin E (dl-alpha-tocopherol acetate) for 0 (CON), 7 (E7), 14 (E14), or 28 (E28) d. Vitamin E was delivered in a pelleted supplement that was added to the basal diet in decreasing concentrations as DMI increased (2.0 kg of DMI = 6%; 4.0 kg of DMI = 4%; and 6.0 kg of DMI = 2%). Serum samples were collected on d 0, 14, 28, and 42 for determination of cholesterol, alpha-tocopherol (d 0, 28, and 42), and antibody (IgG) concentrations. Duration of vitamin E supplementation did not affect ADG (0.98 kg/d; P = 0.56) or G:F (0.189; P = 0.87). Serum cholesterol concentrations decreased (day effect; P < 0.001) for all treatments from d 0 (average = 127 mg/100 mL) to 14 (average = 62 mg/100 mL). Serum alpha-tocopherol decreased (day effect; P < 0.001) from d 0 (5.2 microg/mL) to 28 (1.8 microg/mL); however, on d 28, a greater (P < 0.001) serum alpha-tocopherol concentration was observed for E28 (3.4 microg/mL) calves than for CON (1.1 microg/mL), E7 (1.2 microg/mL), or E14 (1.5 microg/mL) calves. Respiratory disease was diagnosed in 64.6% of calves in this study. Medical costs were less (P = 0.08) for calves fed vitamin E for 28 d (4.88 dollars/calf) than for calves fed the control diet (6.29 dollars/calf). Carcass characteristics were not affected (P = 0.19 to 0.88) by dietary treatments. Supplemental vitamin E formulated for 2,000 IU.calf(-1).d(-1) had little influence on performance and overall health status of calves under our experimental conditions; however, the increased serum concentrations of alpha-tocopherol when vitamin E was fed for 28 d suggests that any potential effects of vitamin E on health status might be time-dependent.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of transportation and commingling on measures of the acute-phase protein response in newly weaned beef calves. Thirty-two (Exp. 1; average BW = 266 +/- 20.8 kg) and thirty-six (Exp. 2; average BW = 222 +/- 34.6 kg) Brahman-crossbred calves were randomly allotted to one of four treatments (2 x 2 factorial arrangement [transportation x commingling] in a completely randomized design). Body weight and jugular blood were collected at weaning, after shipment, and 1, 3, and 7 d after transport for Exp. 1, and at weaning and 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, and 21 d after transport for Exp. 2. Feed intake within pen was recorded daily for Exp. 2. Plasma fibrinogen, ceruloplasmin, haptoglobin, and cortisol concentrations were determined for all collection times. Additionally, serum amyloid-A and alpha-acid glycoprotein concentrations were determined in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively. In Exp. 2, commingled calves tended (P = 0.13) to have a higher DMI than noncommingled calves (5.3 and 4.8 kg/d, respectively). Transported calves lost more BW than nontransported calves from the time of weaning to d 1 (2.0 and 3.1% more BW loss for Exp. 1 and 2, respectively). With the exception of haptoglobin in Exp. 1, each of the acute-phase proteins measured in these studies increased over each sampling day. In Exp. 1, transported calves had higher (P < 0.05) mean serum amyloid-A concentrations than nontransported calves (48.9 vs. 33.4 microg/mL). There was a significant sampling day x transportation interaction (P < 0.01) for fibrinogen, ceruloplasmin, and haptoglobin in Exp. 1; transported calves had higher concentrations of fibrinogen following transport and on d 2 and 3, and ceruloplasmin on d 3. Haptoglobin concentrations were higher (P = 0.04) in nontransported calves on d 1 and 2 of Exp. 1. In Exp. 2, overall mean haptoglobin concentrations were higher in nontransported vs. transported calves. The results of these studies indicate that stressors associated with transportation affect the acute-phase protein response in newly weaned beef calves. More research is needed to determine whether these proteins might be valuable indicators of stress following the weaning process.  相似文献

Three field trials were conducted in a large commercial feedlot in Saskatchewan to determine the prevalence of Haemophilus somnus in calves and to evaluate the efficacy of prophylactic mass medication with long-acting oxytetracycline on day 17 (1990, n = 1336), day 11 (1991, n = 4372), or day 8 (1992, n = 5632) postarrival. Hemophilosis accounted for > 40% of the mortality in feedlot calves each year. Haemophilus somnus was cultured from the blood of one febrile calf on day 1 (0.1%, n = 895), but it was not cultured from nasal swabs on day 1 or day 11 (n = 881) or from blood samples on day 11 (n = 883). Similarly, it was not cultured from nasal swabs or blood samples from sick calves first treated for bovine respiratory disease (BRD) (n = 219). Serological titers to H. somnus increased (p < 0.05) in unvaccinated calves from day 1 (Geometric mean titer = 11,846) to day 96 (Geometric mean titer = 63,712), indicating natural infection following feedlot entry. Calves that relapsed twice with BRD or died from BRD +/- hemophilosis had significantly (p < 0.06) lower titers to H. somnus on days 1 and 96 than those that did not relapse twice or die. Postarrival mass medication with long-acting oxytetracycline did not reduce (p > 0.05) the risk of hemophilosis mortality. However, it reduced (p < 0.05) the risk of BRD treatment by 14% and the risk of BRD mortality by 71%. Additional epidemiological studies of H. somnus are needed so that we can develop strategic medication and vaccination programs to reduce losses from hemophilosis.  相似文献

Stress commonly associated with weaning, marketing, and shipment of feeder cattle can temporarily compromise immune function, thereby reducing the effective response to vaccination intended to control bovine respiratory disease (BRD). Two vaccination timing treatments were used to evaluate the effect of timing of a multivalent modified live virus (MLV) BRD vaccine on health, performance, and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) antibody titers of newly received stocker cattle. Crossbred bull and steer calves (n = 528) were weighed (197 +/- 2.4 kg) and randomly assigned to MLV vaccination treatment: 1) MLV vaccination upon arrival (AMLV), or 2) delayed (14 d) MLV vaccination (DMLV). All cattle were processed similarly according to routine procedures, with the exception of the initial MLV vaccination timing. Subsequently, BW were recorded on d 14, 28, and 42. Blood samples were collected on d 0, 14, 28, and 42 to determine serum IBR titers, and comparisons were made between treatments on a receiving-day basis and an equivalent postvaccination day basis. Daily BW gains were greater (P < or = 0.05) for DMLV calves from d 0 to 14 (1.16 vs. 0.88 +/- 0.22 kg/d) and from d 0 to 42 (0.75 vs. 0.65 +/- 0.09 kg/d). Days to first treatment, total treatment cost, percentage death loss, and pasture ADG after the 42-d receiving period did not differ (P > or = 0.15). Morbidity rates for BRD were high for both AMLV and DMLV (71.5 and 63.5%, respectively) and did not differ (P = 0.12). Positive IBR titer seroconversion was greater (P < or = 0.03) for DMLV calves on d 42 of the study, and for the 28- and 42-d equivalent postvaccination basis. Delaying vaccination by 14 d may increase ADG during the receiving period compared with AMLV, and seroconversion to IBR was greater in DMLV calves, indicating a possible improvement in acquired immune response when MLV vaccination is delayed.  相似文献

Serum samples obtained from feeder calves before and after entry into the market system (days 0 to 7) were assayed for antibodies to Pasteurella hamolytica biotype A, serotype 1 capsular polysaccharide (CPS) and lipopolysaccharide/outer membrane protein (LPSp) by isotype in a kinetic-augmented, antigen-capture ELISA. These test results, plus indirect hemagglutination (IHA) antibody titers, and hemolysin-in-gel test (HIGT) findings were compared with clinical performance data during the initial 4 weeks in the feedlot (receiving period). High concentrations of HIGT antibody, at the point of initial assembly of feeder calves at weaning and during the subsequent 7-day marketing period, were associated with freedom from bovine respiratory disease (BRD) during the receiving period. High or rapidly increasing concentrations of anti-CPS IgG1 during the marketing period were also associated with less BRD. However, high concentrations of anti-LPSp IgG1 during the marketing period were associated with increased BRD during the receiving period. There was no correlation between the concentrations of antibody determined by IHA tests early in the marketing period and freedom from BRD during the receiving period. High concentrations of antibody determined by this test at entry into the feedlot (day 7) were associated with a high incidence of BRD. Calves vaccinated with a P haemolytica bacterin had significantly (P less than 0.05) higher HIGT values and concentrations of anti-LPSp IgG1 and IHA antibody than did nonvaccinated calves on entry into the feedlot (day 7). Vaccination appeared to have little effect on the amount of anti-CPS IgG1. Of all the tests used to quantitate antibody, the HIGT correlated best with clinical performance.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Twenty-one diarrheic calves were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 oral electrolyte treatments. The treatments were either a conventional oral electrolyte containing glycine (40 mmol/L) as the amino acid, an oral electrolyte in which glutamine (40 mmol/L) replaced glycine or an electrolyte in which high concentrations of glutamine (400 mmol/L) replaced glycine. The calves were monitored while on trial and at the end of the treatment they were euthanized and a necropsy was immediately performed. Calves fed the high glutamine electrolyte had more treatment failures (2/7 versus 0/7 for each of the other 2 treatments). There was a significant effect of type of electrolyte on fecal consistency. Calves fed the glycine containing electrolyte had the most solid feces. Duodenal villus height was significantly affected by the type of electrolyte: values (mean +/- 1 SEM) were 0.61 +/- 0.09, 0.46 +/- 0.05, and 0.59 +/- 0.07 mm for high glutamine, low glutamine and glycine electrolytes respectively. There was no significant difference in small intestinal surface area between groups. High glutamine treated calves had the greatest capacity to absorb xylose from the small intestine but this difference was not statistically significant. Overall, this trial does not suggest that substituting glutamine for glycine in oral electrolyte solutions improves treatment of diarrheic calves or speeds mucosal healing.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine serum lactoferrin concentrations (SLFC) in neonatal calves before and after ingestion of colostrum and to develop models that predict SLFC as a function of colostral lactoferrin concentrations (CLFC) in calves. ANIMALS: 13 Holstein calves. PROCEDURE: Calves were fed 4 L of colostrum via oroesophageal feeder within 3 hours after birth. Serum samples were collected before ingestion of colostrum (day 0) and 2, 4, 6, and 7 days after birth. Colostrum and serum IgG concentrations were measured by use of radial immunodiffusion. The CLFC and SLFC were determined by use of an ELISA. RESULTS: Mean +/- SD SLFC on days 0, 2, 4, 6, and 7 were 2.5+/-1.6 (range 0.47 to 71), 6.0+/-3.0 (range 2.0 to 16.6), 12.0+/-12.4 (range 0.0 to 43.5), 171+/-13.6 (range 2.2 to 39.4), and 13.6+/-16.4 (range 0.0 to 43.8) mg/ml, respectively. The SLFC on days 6 and 7 differed significantly from SLFC on day 0. The model that best estimated SLFC on day 6 predicted that (SLFC)2 was a function of the logarithm of relative efficiency of passive transfer (REPT) and ([CLFC]2 x [REPT]2), where R2 = 0.4. The model for SLFC on day 7 predicted that (SLFC)2 was a function of log(REPT), where R2 = 0.44. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Definitive evidence for passive transfer of lactoferrin via colostrum is lacking, because SLFC on day 2 or 4 were not significantly different than day 0. Relative efficiency of lactoferrin absorption was directly related to SLFC on day 6 but inversely related to SLFC on day 7.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of daily oral administration of decoquinate to neonatal calves experimentally challenged with various numbers of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts. DESIGN: Clinical trial. ANIMALS: 75 calves. PROCEDURE: Calves were purchased from a commercial dairy during a 5-week period. Calves were housed in individual hutches and fed milk replacer with or without decoquinate (2 mg/kg [0.9 mg/lb per day]). Calves were randomly assigned to treatment and 1 of 5 challenge groups (0, 50, 100, 1000, or 10,000 C. parvum oocysts in 60 mL of saline [0.9% NaCl] solution administered p.o. on the day after arrival). Calves were maintained in the study for as long as 28 days. Calves were clinically assessed for diarrhea and dehydration. Fecal samples were submitted for oocyst enumeration 3 times each week. RESULTS: Treatment did not affect number of days to first watery feces (diarrhea), number of days to first oocyst shedding, or duration of diarrhea or oocyst shedding. Duration of oocyst shedding was significantly associated with challenge dose of oocysts administered to calves and number of days to first oocyst shedding. Duration of diarrhea and number of days to first oocyst shedding were significantly associated with week of arrival and number of days to first watery diarrhea. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Daily treatment with decoquinate at the dosage used in this study did not affect oocyst shedding or clinical signs associated with cryptosporidiosis. However, there was an indication that if the number of oocysts calves received could be reduced, then the duration of oocyst shedding and, hence, environmental loading of C. parvum oocysts could be reduced.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate associations between neonatal serum IgG1 concentration and pre- and postweaning morbidity and mortality rates and average daily gains (ADGs) in beef calves and define a cutoff point for serum IgG1 concentration necessary for optimal health and performance of beef calves. DESIGN: Nonconcurrent cohort study. ANIMALS: 1,568 crossbred beef calves. PROCEDURE: Single radial immunodiffusion was used to quantitate IgG1 concentration in sera collected from calves between 24 and 72 hours after birth. Logistic regression, ANCOVA, and likelihood ratios were used to analyze data. RESULTS: In the preweaning period, lower perinatal IgG1 concentrations were significantly associated with higher morbidity rates, higher mortality rates, and lower ADGs. Calves with serum IgG1 concentration < 2,400 mg/dL were 1.6 times as likely to become ill before weaning and 2.7 times as likely to die before weaning as calves with higher serum IgG1 concentrations. Calves with serum IgG1 concentration of at least 2,700 mg/dL weighed an estimated 3.35 kg (7.38 lb) more at 205 days of age than calves with lower serum IgG1 concentration. No significant association of serum IgG1 concentration with feedlot morbidity, death, or ADG was identified. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: By use of likelihood ratios, the threshold of serum IgG1 concentration for optimal health and performance of calves was higher than values reported previously. Implementation and maintenance of management and intervention strategies designed for early detection and treatment of calves at risk for failure of passive transfer will likely result in increases in preweaning health and performance parameters.  相似文献

A multicentre, controlled, randomized and blinded trial was carried out in 180 ruminating calves with pyrexia and respiratory sign(s) on nine Belgian, British and French farms. All animals were sampled for pathogenic bacteria before treatment and at failure/relapse. Calves were injected with either marbofloxacin (M) solution [Marbocyl (Laboratoire Vétoquinol, Lure, France) 10%] at 2 mg/kg/24 h for 4 days intravenously on the first day then subcutaneously, or tilmicosin (T) solution (Micotil, Elanco Products Ltd, Basingstoke, Hants, UK) at 10 mg/kg as a single subcutaneous (s.c.) injection. The animals were examined clinically eight times up to day 28. The bacterial pathogens were found to be sensitive to marbofloxacin: for Pasteurella haemolytica the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)90 was 0.08 microg/mL and for P. multocida the MIC90 was 0.04 microg/mL. Cure rates at day 4 for group M and group T were 84 vs. 82%, respectively (P > or = 0.05). However, overall clinical score was significantly lower after 1 day in group M (P < 0.05). There was no difference in either relapse rate or average daily weight gain between groups. Marbofloxacin was found to be better tolerated than tilmicosin at the s.c. injection site (77.5 vs. 42.2% calves without local swelling, P=0.001) and was well tolerated when injected intravenously. Marbofloxacin was shown to have comparable but faster efficacy and better local tolerance than tilmicosin in the treatment of bovine respiratory disease (BRD).  相似文献

The objective herein was to estimate heterosis and breed effects in purebred and crossbred Romosinuano, Brahman, and Angus calves on acute phase protein response to weaning and transportation. Calves (n = 1,032) were weaned in September of 2002, 2003, and 2004 at approximately 7 mo of age. Approximately 28 d after weaning, steer calves (n = 482) were transported 1,800 km (20 h) to Oklahoma. Concentrations of 3 acute phase proteins (ceruloplasmin, fibrinogen, and haptoglobin) were measured in blood samples. Calves (steers and heifers) were sampled at weaning, and 24 and 72 h postweaning. For separate analyses, steers sent to Oklahoma were sampled before shipment, upon arrival, and 24 and 72 h after arrival. Combinations of the following fixed effects were investigated: sire breed, dam breed, sampling time, birth location, calf sex (weaning only), year, cow age, and interactions. Effects of special interest were sire breed x dam breed as an indication of breed group of calf, and the interaction of sire and dam breeds with sampling time. Weaning age and BW were investigated as linear and quadratic covariates. Sire of calf within sire breed was a random term. The correlation structure of repeated measures was determined by comparison of information criterion values for different structures within each analysis. In general, plasma acute phase protein concentrations in weaned calves increased with sampling time. Concentrations in the transported steers increased through sampling at 24 h after arrival, and were lower at 72 h. Significant estimates of heterosis were detected for Brahman-Angus haptoglobin concentrations at weaning (0.38 +/- 0.14 mg/dL x 100; 44%), and for Romosinuano-Angus fibrinogen concentrations at weaning (11.4 +/- 5.5 mg/dL; 10%) and in transported steers (22.5 +/- 8.4 mg/dL; 20%). The direct effect of Romosinuano was to increase (P <0.004) ceruloplasmin concentrations of weaned calves (4.1 +/- 0.9 mg/dL) and of transported steers (3.9 +/- 1.3 mg/dL). The direct effect of Angus was to lower ceruloplasmin concentrations in weaned calves (-3.9 +/- 1.2; P = 0.001). Significant maternal effects were detected at weaning for ceruloplasmin concentrations in Romosinuano (-1.4 +/- 0.5 mg/ dL) and Angus (1.6 +/- 0.7 mg/dL) and fibrinogen concentrations in Brahman calves (-17.7 +/- 8.8 mg/dL). These data imply that acute phase protein concentrations in response to weaning and transportation are impacted by cattle breed.  相似文献

Thirty-six crossbred steers (288 +/- 3.7 kg initial BW) were used to determine the effect of Cr, as chromium-L-methionine, on glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity in beef calves. Calves were fed a control diet or the diet supplemented with 400 or 800 microg Cr/kg of diet as chromium-L-methionine. Calves were kept in drylots (six calves/pen; two pens/dietary treatment). Steers were caught twice a day in locking headgates and individually fed their respective diets for a period of 22, 23, or 24 d prior to the metabolic challenges. Calves received a totally mixed diet containing 54% corn, 38% cottonseed hulls, and 5% soybean meal. On d 21, 22, and 23, four calves/dietary treatment were fitted with an indwelling jugular catheter. Approximately 24 h after catheterization, an intravenous glucose tolerance test (500 mg glucose/kg of BW), followed 5 h later by an intravenous insulin challenge test (0.1 IU insulin/kg of BW), was conducted. There was no effect (P > 0.10) of dietary treatment on ADG or ADFI. During the intravenous glucose tolerance test, serum insulin concentrations were increased by supplemental chromium-L-methionine (linear effect of Cr, P < 0.05). There was a time x treatment interaction (P < 0.05) on plasma glucose concentrations after the glucose infusion. Plasma glucose concentrations of calves fed 400 microg Cr/kg of diet were lower than those of controls and calves supplemented with 800 microg Cr/kg of diet (quadratic effect of Cr, P < 0.05) 5 and 10 min after the glucose infusion. Supplemental chromium-L-methionine increased the glucose clearance rate from 5 to 10 min after the insulin challenge test (linear effect of Cr, P < 0.05). Glucose half-life from 5 to 10 min after the insulin infusion was also decreased by supplemental chromium-L-methionine (linear effect of Cr, P < 0.10). These data indicate that supplemental Cr, as chromium-L-methionine, increased glucose clearance rate after an insulin infusion and increased the insulin response to an intravenous glucose challenge in growing calves with functioning rumens.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare efficacy of flunixin meglumine versus carprofen in controlling pain under field conditions following castration by use of an external clamping technique in calves that received epidural anesthesia. ANIMALS: 40 male 5- to 6-month-old calves. PROCEDURES: Calves were allocated to 4 groups: castrated only (control calves; n=8); castrated 5 minutes after epidural injection of 2% lidocaine (epidural-alone treated calves; 8), castrated after epidural anesthesia and s.c. administration of flunixin meglumine (epidural-flunixin treated calves; 12), and castrated after epidural anesthesia and s.c. administration of carprofen (epidural-carprofen-treated calves; 11 [1 calf not included]). Plasma cortisol concentration was measured before and 6, 24, and 48 hours after castration. Time of arrival at the feed trough at 24 and 48 hours was observed. Calves were observed at 24 and 48 hours for 4 pain-related behaviors. RESULTS: At 6 hours, control calves had significantly higher plasma cortisol concentrations, compared with baseline values and those of epidural-flunixin- and epidural-carprofen-treated calves. At 24 hours, epidural-carprofen-treated calves had significantly lower plasma cortisol concentrations, compared with control calves. At 48 hours, epidural-carprofen-treated calves had plasma cortisol concentrations that were similar to baseline values and significantly lower than epidural-flunixin- and epidural-alone-treated calves. At 24 and 48 hours, epidural-carprofen-treated calves were first to arrive at the feed trough and had fewer pain-related behaviors. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: s.c. administration of carprofen in combination with epidural injection of lidocaine may improve the welfare of calves castrated by use of an external clamping technique for up to 48 hours.  相似文献

The association between bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and antibody titers to bovine coronavirus (BCV) was studied in 604 calves (19 different groups in 4 different feedlots from 2 provinces). Almost all calves had antibody titers on arrival in the Alberta feedlot and 82% of the calves had an antibody titer on arrival at the Ontario feedlots; titers in calves in Alberta were almost twice as high as those in calves in Ontario. The incidence of infection, in the first mo after arrival as judged by seroconversion, ranged from 61% to 100%; titer increases were much greater in calves in Ontario feedlots. Titer variables were not significantly related to BRD, except on a within-group basis (group was a confounding variable for BCV-BRD associations). Given control of group effects, calves with an antibody titer on arrival appeared to be protected against BRD for the first 28 d in the feedlot, and the association was reasonably linear over the range of titers. Each titer unit on arrival decreased the risk of BRD by about 0.8x (odds ratio). Titer change was not strongly related to the risk of BRD and the relationship was not linear over the range of titer changes. Titer change was strongly and negatively correlated with titer on arrival, and titer change was not significantly related to BRD in the presence of arrival titers. Arrival titer retained its relationship with BRD in the presence of titer data for other putative pathogens. Each higher unit of titer to BCV on arrival increased the 28-day weight gain (controlling for group, initial weight and the occurrence of BRD) by slightly more than 1 kg. Titer change was associated with decreased weight gain, when initial titer was not in the model. The lack of a linear or multivariable association between BCV titer change and BRD, and weight gain, may indicate that BCV is not a major pathogen; or, its lack of significance may merely be due to its strong correlation with arrival titer. Given the associations found in this study, particularly the interprovincial differences in arrival titers, more and different approaches to studying the possible effects of BCV on BRD are in order.  相似文献
