Duroc, Meishan, Fengjing, and Minzhu boars were mated to crossbred gilts during two breeding seasons. From each sire breed group each season, six pens of approximately eight barrows each were slaughtered. A pen of pigs from each sire breed group was slaughtered at 7-d intervals from 168 to 203 d of age each season. Breed of sire effects were significant for all age-adjusted carcass traits except carcass length, fat thickness at the last rib, color score, and firmness score. At 184 d of age, Duroc crosses had the heaviest (P less than .05) slaughter and carcass weights; Minzhu crosses were lighter (P less than .05) than Meishan crosses but not lighter than Fengjing crosses. Differences among age-constant traits reflect differences in BW. After adjustment to a constant carcass weight of 78 kg, the three Chinese breeds had very similar carcass characteristics. Carcasses sired by Durocs had significantly less backfat and larger longissimus muscle area than carcasses sired by the Chinese breeds. Weight of each trimmed wholesale lean cut and their total weight were significantly higher for Duroc crosses than for Chinese crosses. Breed of sire means did not differ significantly for belly weight, but Duroc crosses had less (P less than .05) weight of leaf fat. Relative to Chinese crosses, longissimus muscles from Duroc crosses had more marbling (P less than .05). Sire breed groups did not differ significantly for color or firmness score. Pigs sired by Meishan, Fengjing, and Minzhu produced carcasses with significantly less lean content at a carcass weight of 78 kg than did pigs sired by Duroc.  相似文献

Three litters of four pigs from each of four different groups were used to evaluate the effect of porcine somatotropin (pST) on growth performance, body gain composition, energy and N metabolism, and in vitro cytochrome oxydase (final enzyme of the respiratory chain) activity of tissues. The four groups included boars from a synthetic line (SG1) or the Large White breed (SG2) and barrows from the Large White breed (SG3) or crossbred between Large White and Meishan breeds (SG4). Inherent capacity for daily lean tissue growth (LTG) decreased from SG1 to SG4. Within a litter, one pig was slaughtered and dissected at the beginning of the experiment (55 kg BW) and the three others were fed the same daily supply of protein and amino acids (26 g of lysine/d) but relative daily energy levels were either 113 (without pST: E1/0), 100 (3 mg of pST/d: E2/pST) or 87 (3 mg of pST/d: E3/pST). The 100 energy level corresponded to the ad libitum intake of E2/pST pigs. Two energy and N balances were carried out in respiration chambers during the experimental period. Pigs were slaughtered and dissected at approximately 95 kg BW and composition of gain was estimated using the comparative slaughter technique. In E1/0 pigs, daily BW, lean, and N gain were affected (P less than .01) by group; 566, 471, 374, and 315 g/d of lean tissue gain in SG1, SG2, SG3, and SG4 pigs, respectively. At high ME intake (E2/pST vs E1/0), pST increased daily BW (+14%), lean (+27%), or N (+26%) gain and reduced adipose tissue (-50%) gain, but the pST effect was inversely related to LTG: for N, the improvement was 2.8, 7.1, 7.0, and 11.1 g/d in SG1, SG2, SG3, and SG4 groups, respectively. Energy restriction (E3/pST vs E2/pST) reduced (P less than .001) adipose tissue gain in all groups but did not affect lean tissue or N gains in SG1, SG2, and SG3 pigs. In the pST-treated pigs of the SG4 group, the lean tissue or N gains were reduced (P less than .01) by energy restriction. Energy restriction combined with pST treatment (E3/pST) led to negligible amounts of fat deposited (40 g/d for SG1 + SG2 + SG3 pigs) and a gain:feed ratio higher than 500 g/kg (580 in SG1 pigs). Accurate evaluations of growth and composition traits enable better management decisions regarding genetic merit, feeding, and marketing. Sires from Duroc and Pietrain populations were used to produce crossbred pigs, which were evaluated for growth and composition traits. All parents were normal for the ryanodine receptor gene. Boars from each breed were mated to either Yorkshire or F1 Yorkshire-Landrace females with 307 offspring evaluated from birth through 26 wk of age. No significant differences between sire breeds were seen for pig BW from birth through 10 wk of age. Body weight, 10th rib backfat (BF10), last rib backfat (LRF), and loin muscle area (LMA) were serially measured at 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 24, and 26 wk of age. At 26 wk of age, Duroc-sired progeny were heavier (143.4 vs. 132.7 kg, P < 0.001), had more BF10 (27.1 vs. 23.7 mm, P < 0.001) and LRF (21.2 vs. 19.2 mm, P < 0.001), but had similar LMA (46.4 vs. 47.1 cm2) compared with Pietrain-sired progeny. Mean feed efficiency did not differ between breed of sire in any period of the study. Duroc progeny had a greater ADG (980.1 vs. 892.3 g/d, P < 0.001) from 10 to 26 wk of age than Pietrain-sired pigs. Composition traits of fat-free total lean (FFTOLN), total fat tissue (TOFAT), empty body protein (EBPRO), and empty body lipid (EBLIPID) were calculated. Random regression animal models with polynomial regression on week on-test were fitted to BW, BF10, LRF, LMA, FFTOLN, TOFAT, EBPRO, and EBLIPID from 10 to 26 wk of age. Duroc-sired barrows tended to grow faster but with more fat tissue, and Pietrain-sired gilts were slower growing but leaner, whereas Duroc-sired gilts and Pietrain-sired barrows were intermediate for growth and backfat measures. Serial heritability estimates generally increased from 10 to 26 wk of age with ranges as follows: BW (0.05 to 0.39), BF10 (0.13 to 0.76), LRF (0.11 to 0.79), LMA (0.05 to 0.73), FFTOLN (0.07 to 0.16), TOFAT (0.19 to 0.45), EBPRO (0.02 to 0.55), and EBLIPID (0.12 to 0.60). Pigs sired by Duroc and Pietrain boars had similar lean tissue growth but achieved it through different mechanisms.  相似文献

Meishan, Fengjing, Minzhu, and Duroc boars were mated by AI to crossbred gilts to compare the sire breeds for effects on productivity of their mates and performance of their progeny. Gilts were derived from a four-way cross of Chester White, Landrace, Large White, and Yorkshire. At weaning, litters sired by Meishan boars averaged 1.69 and 1.32 more pigs than those sired by Duroc and Minzhu boars, respectively (P less than .05). Pigs sired by Meishan and Fengjing boars averaged 1.2 to 1.8 more nipples than pigs sired by Duroc and Minzhu boars (P less than .05). Minzhu-sired pigs had a lower (P less than .05) survival rate to 14 and 28 d of age than did those sired by Meishan, Fengjing, and Duroc. Fengjing-sired pigs were heavier than Minzhu-sired pigs at birth and heavier than Minzhu- and Duroc-sired pigs at 14, 28, and 56 d of age (P less than .05). At 70 d of age, Meishan-sired pigs were heaviest, followed in order by Fengjing-, Duroc-, and Minzhu-sired pigs. At 98 d of age, Meishan-sired pigs were significantly heavier than all other breed groups and Duroc-sired pigs were significantly heavier than Minzhu-sired pigs. At 126 and 154 d of age, Duroc-sired pigs were heaviest, followed in order by Meishan-, Fengjing-, and Minzhu-sired pigs; all differences were significant. Average backfat thickness of gilts at 99.7 kg was least for Duroc-sired gilts and highest for Meishan-sired gilts. Sire breed groups did not differ significantly in feed efficiency from 70 to 98 d of age. Duroc-sired pigs were the most efficient (P less than .05) from 98 to 126 and 126 to 154 d of age. Results indicate that use of these Chinese breeds in crossbreeding programs will decrease performance traits. This decrease would have to be offset by increases in reproductive efficiency of Chinese sows, use of repartitioning agents, or other management techniques if Chinese pigs are to improve overall production efficiency of a crossbreeding program.  相似文献

Crossbred pigs (n = 240) from Pietrain x Large White sires mated to Landrace x Large White dams, with an average age of 100 d (60.5 +/- 2.3 kg of BW), were used to investigate the effects of sex and slaughter weight (SW) on growth performance and on carcass and meat quality characteristics. There were 6 treatments arranged factorially, with 3 classes (intact females, IF; castrated females, CF; and castrated males, CM) and 2 slaughter weights (114 and 122 kg of BW). Each of the 6 combinations of treatments was replicated 4 times, and the experimental unit was a pen with 10 pigs. Castrated males and CF ate more feed, grew faster, and had more carcass backfat depth and fat thickness at the gluteus medius muscle but lower loin yield than IF (P < 0.05). In addition, CF and CM had more intramuscular fat (P < 0.05) and less linoleic acid content in the subcutaneous fat (P < 0.01) than IF. Pigs slaughtered at 122 kg of BW had lower ADG (P < 0.05), decreased G:F (P < 0.05), and more gluteus medius fat than pigs slaughtered at 114 kg of BW (P < 0.05). It was concluded that CF and CM had similar productive performance and meat quality characteristics when slaughtered at the same age, and that castration of females improved ADG and increased weight and fat content of primal cuts with respect to IF. Therefore, castration of females is recommended in pigs destined for the dry-cured industry because of the beneficial effects on quality of the primal cuts.  相似文献

A total of 120 pigs [Duroc × (Landrace × Large White); initial average BW: 100.3 ± 2.5 kg] were used to investigate the effects of sex (barrows and gilts) and dietary total Lys restriction (7.0, 6.5, and 6.0 g·kg(-1)) on growth performance and carcass, meat, and fat characteristics. Pigs were intended for high-quality dry-cured ham from Spain (called Teruel ham), and a minimum fat thickness at the gluteus medius muscle (GM) is required (16 mm) for carcasses to be acceptable. Animals were slaughtered when they reached 129.0 ± 3.6 kg of BW. There were 6 treatments arranged factorially (2 sexes × 3 dietary Lys concentrations) and 4 replicates of 5 pigs per treatment. Barrows consumed more feed (P = 0.001) and tended to have less G:F (P = 0.06) than gilts. Carcasses from barrows were fatter (P = 0.001) and had heavier main trimmed lean cuts (P = 0.008) than gilts. A greater proportion of final acceptable carcasses for Teruel ham (P = 0.001) was observed in barrows than in gilts because of the greater percentage of carcasses that fulfill the minimum fat depth at GM required (P = 0.001). Meat from barrows had greater content of intramuscular fat (P = 0.02) than meat from gilts. Also, subcutaneous fat from barrows had less proportion of PUFA than fat from gilts (P = 0.02). A reduction in dietary Lys concentration decreased ADG (P = 0.004) and ADFI (P = 0.001) in pigs. In addition, backfat depth (P = 0.007) and fat at GM (P = 0.07) increased as dietary Lys decreased. The proportion of carcasses that fulfilled the minimum fat depth at GM required for Teruel ham increased as dietary Lys decreased in feed, but this effect was greater in gilts than in barrows (sex × Lys, P = 0.02). Meat and fat quality was not influenced by dietary treatment. We conclude that different feeding programs with different dietary Lys concentrations may be needed for barrows and gilts intended for production of dry-cured hams where a minimum carcass fat depth is required.  相似文献

A study was conducted to evaluate differences in performance and in carcass composition and tissue deposition rates between purebred Duroc pigs sired by boars currently available and those sired by boars from the mid-1980s. Two lines were developed by randomly allocating littermate and half-sib pairs of females to matings by current time period (CTP) or old time period (OTP) boars. Pigs from 2 replications were placed on test at a group mean BW of 63.5 kg. Serial ultrasonic measurements of the 10th-rib LM area (LMA), off-midline backfat (BF10), and intramuscular fat percentage (IMF) were collected every 2 wk in the first replication and used to assess deposition rate differences. Off-test ultrasonic LMA, BF10, and IMF measurements from a total of 557 pigs from 23 CTP sires and 232 pigs from 15 OTP sires across 2 replications and at a mean BW of 109 kg were evaluated. All available barrows and randomly selected gilts (n = 277) were sent to a commercial abattoir, and carcass measurements of 10th-rib backfat, last-rib backfat, last lumbar backfat, and LMA were collected. Analysis of serial backfat measurements revealed a linear relationship between back-fat and BW between 73 and 118 kg for pigs from both time periods. Pigs sired by OTP boars deposited more backfat (P < 0.05) at a faster rate than pigs sired by CTP boars over the entire test period. A curvilinear cumulative tissue deposition pattern was revealed for ultrasonically estimated LMA and IMF within both time periods. Significant linear and quadratic regression coefficient differences between lines indicated that pigs sired by CTP boars deposited more LMA and less IMF per kilogram of BW gain than pigs sired by OTP boars. Pigs sired by CTP boars had more LMA and less BF10 (P < 0.05), whereas pigs sired by OTP boars had more IMF (P = 0.04). Carcass evaluation revealed more (P < 0.01) carcass measurements of LMA and less (P < 0.05) carcass measurements of 10th-rib backfat, carcass measurements of last-rib backfat, and carcass measurements of last lumbar backfat for pigs sired by CTP boars. No difference (P > 0.05) between the time periods was found for ADG over the entire test period. Results from this study illustrate that significant progress in carcass composition has been realized within the Duroc breed since the mid-1980s. The long-term selection response in carcass leanness has also resulted in changes in deposition rates of correlated traits such as LMA and IMF.  相似文献

Four Duroc x White composite crossbred (21.8 +/- 1.0 kg BW) and four 12-wk-old Meishan purebred (20.7 +/- 1.6 kg BW) growing barrows were used to determine the relative breed differences in metabolic and microbial responses to a high-fiber diet. The pigs were trained to consume 700 g of a diet containing 35% (as-fed basis) dehydrated alfalfa meal once daily. The pigs' daily intakes of DM, N, GE, NDF, and ADF were 610 g, 16.6 g, 2.64 Mcal, 150 g, and 88 g, respectively. On d 12 after surgical catheterization of the portal vein, ileal vein, and carotid artery, a 3-d total urine and feces collection was conducted. On d 24 after surgery, each pig was placed in an open-circuit calorimeter, and its catheters were connected to a system for simultaneous measurements of oxygen consumption by portal-drained viscera and by whole body, and the net portal absorption of VFA after a 24-h fasting and during a 5-h postprandial period. The VFA measured included acetic, propionic, isobutyric, butyric, isovaleric, and valeric acids. A second 3-d total urine and feces collection was conducted on d 30 after surgery. There were no differences (P = 0.13) between the first and second collections in apparent total-tract digestibility coefficients for nutrients and N retention of pigs. Compared with Duroc x White composite crossbred pigs, Meishan pigs had lower (P = 0.05) apparent digestibility coefficients for DM, N, NDF, hemicellulose, and N retention, but their portal-drained viscera used a greater (P = 0.05) fraction of whole-body oxygen consumption. No differences (P = 0.12) were found between Duroc x White composite crossbred and Meishan pigs in total viable bacteria and cellulolytic bacteria from fecal samples, in vitro digestibility of alfalfa NDF fractions by fecal inocula, whole-body oxygen consumption, net portal absorption of VFA, total energy of absorbed VFA, and the potential of absorbed VFA for meeting the energy needs for whole-body heat production. These results indicate that, in contrast to previous beliefs, the ability of Meishan growing pigs to utilize a high-fiber diet is not superior to that of Duroc x White composite crossbred growing pigs.  相似文献

Post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) is a worldwide distributed disease of multifactorial origin and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) has been identified as its essential infectious aetiology. Pig genetic background has been pointed to influence disease expression. In the present study, three different boar lines, namely A (100% Pietrain), B (50% Large White × 50% Pietrain) and C (25% Large White × 75% Duroc), were used to inseminate sows from the same genetic line (37.5% Large White × 37.5% Duroc × 25% Landrace) located on two PMWS-affected farms (farm-1 and farm-2). The PMWS clinical expression of their offspring was studied from weaning to slaughter, evaluating three parameters: total post-weaning mortality (PWM), PWM associated to PMWS (PMWS-PWM) and body weight (BW) evolution. The effect of other variables potentially related with PMWS, including sow and piglet PCV2 exposure, sow parity, piglet gender and piglet BW at weaning, were also considered in the study design. Overall, a total of 6.5% PWM and 4.3% PMWS-PWM occurred in the monitored farms. Pigs from boar line C showed the highest PWM (16.3%) and PMWS-PWM (12.4%), and the lowest BW; pigs from boar line A showed the lowest PWM (1.8%) and the highest BW. Furthermore, PWM was also higher in piglets from farm-2 and from multiparous sows. In farm-2, PMWS-PWM was higher in piglets from multiparous sows. Finally, BW was influenced by interactions between genetics and both farm and pig age, and was lower in piglets from farm-2. This study represents a consistent observation of the genetic background effect on PMWS clinical expression under field conditions.  相似文献

This study was designed to evaluate Duroc (DU) crossing for Carso dry-cured ham production. One hundred fifty-four pigs (81 females and 73 castrates) of four different genotypes, pure Landrace pigs (LAN), offspring of LAN females crossed with Large White (LW) males (LWxLAN), offspring of LAN females crossed with DU males (DUxLAN), and offspring of LWxLAN females crossed with DU males (DUx[LWxLAN]), were chosen in the weight range of 105 to 120 kg (112.7 +/- 0.4 kg). Raw material quality was evaluated for ham fatness (intra- and intermuscular and subcutaneous) and meat quality (pH, color, water-holding capacity) of longissimus dorsi, biceps femoris, and semimembranosus muscles. Ham weight losses were recorded at different stages of processing. The biceps femoris and semimembranosus muscles were analyzed for chemical composition before (lipid, moisture, total nitrogen, nonprotein nitrogen) and after (moisture, salt, total nitrogen, nonprotein nitrogen) processing. Chemical and sensory analyses were performed on 96 dry hams (12 castrates and 12 females per genotype). Biceps femoris and semimembranosus muscles were evaluated for color, saltiness, aroma, and texture. Pigs of the four genotypes had similar ham fatness as estimated by subcutaneous fat thickness. Duroc crosses exhibited higher intramuscular fat content, marbling, and intermuscular fat. Crossing with DU resulted in lower weight losses during ham processing. Castrates were fatter and had more intra- and intermuscular fat and lower ham processing weight losses than females. A strong negative relationship between ham fatness and ham processing losses was observed. Chemical and sensory traits of dry ham muscles were little affected by DU crossing. Lower salt content of biceps femoris was found in DU crosses. Dry hams from female pigs had higher total and nonprotein nitrogen, but drier, firmer texture and higher resistance to cutting force compared to dry hams from castrated pigs. Crossing with DU demonstrated some disadvantages (more intermuscular fat, more slice visible fat) and advantages (lower weight loss and salt intake) for the quality of dry-cured ham.  相似文献

Peri- and postpubertal boars accumulate substances (e.g., androstenone and skatole) in their fatty tissue that are responsible for boar taint in pork. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of a GnRH vaccine, Improvac, in eliminating boar taint. Three hundred male (200 intact boars, 100 barrows) crossbred (Large White x Landrace) pigs were used in a 2 x 3 factorially arranged experiment. The respective factors were sex group (barrows, boars treated with placebo, or boars treated with Improvac) and slaughter age (23 or 26 wk). Vaccines were administered 8 and 4 wk before slaughter. All Improvac-treated pigs exhibited anti-GnRH titers. Testes and bulbo-urethral gland weights in treated pigs were reduced by approximately 50% (P < 0.001) and serum testosterone levels were below 2 ng/mL in the majority of treated boars (94 and 92% across both age groups at 2 and 4 wk, respectively). Boar taint, as assessed by the concentration of androstenone and skatole in s.c. fat, was suppressed to low or undetectable levels in 100% of Improvac-treated boars. No Improvac-treated pigs had significant concentrations of either androstenone (> 1.0 microg/g) or skatole (> 0.20 microg/g). In contrast, 49.5% of placebo-treated controls had significant androstenone and 10.8% had significant skatole levels, resulting in 10% of the control boars with high concentrations of both compounds. The mean concentrations of taint compounds in the Improvac-treated pigs were not significantly different from those in barrows. Improvac-treated boars grew more rapidly (P = 0.051 and < 0.001 for pigs slaughtered at 23 and 26 wk of age, respectively) than control boars over the 4 wk after the secondary vaccination, possibly because of reduced sexual and aggressive activities. Compared with barrows, Improvac-treated boars were leaner and had superior feed conversion efficiency. The vaccine was well tolerated by the pigs, and no observable site reactions could be detected at the time of slaughter. Vaccination of boars with Improvac allows production of heavy boars with improved meat quality through prevention and control of boar taint.  相似文献

Seventeen to twenty-three females of lean (Pietrain, PI), fat (Meishan, MS), or intermediate genotype (PI x [3/4 Large White x 1/4 MS]), referred to as crossbred (CR), were injected between 60 and 100 kg live weight with 6 mg/d of porcine somatotropin (pST) and compared to similar numbers of control females receiving the vehicle only. Average daily gain increased similarly in the three genotypes (125 g/d). Feed conversion ratio tended to decrease to a higher extent in MS (-2.0 kg of feed/kg of gain) than in the other two genotypes (-1.1 and -.9 kg of feed/kg of gain for CR and PI, respectively). A significant genotype x treatment interaction was also observed for backfat thickness (BF) and fat, muscle, and bone development. Effects of pST in PI, CR, and MS pigs were, respectively, -6.2, -9.6, and -16.1 mm for BF and 3.0, 6.8, and 11.8% carcass muscle. The influence of pST on physical measurements of meat quality was rather low, although desirable effects (P less than .05) were obtained on the reflectance and water-holding capacity of PI and CR. Intramuscular fat content was reduced by approximately 1% in MS and CR but not in PI. The metatarsals of pST-treated animals had a higher water content (except in PI), a lower mineralization, and a lower breaking strength (except in MS). The existence of breed variations in the response to pST might result in changes of the relative merit of crossbreeding schemes.  相似文献

Forty-five pigs with an average initial live weight of 60 kg were used to investigate the effects of daily exogenous porcine pituitary growth hormone administration at two dose levels (pGH; 0, excipient buffer injected, and 100 micrograms.kg-1.d-1) for a 31-d period on the performance and body composition of boars, gilts and barrows allowed to consume feed ad libitum. Excipient boars consumed less feed, exhibited faster and more efficient growth (P less than .01) and produced less fat and more protein and water (P less than .01) in the empty body compared with excipient barrows, which in turn contained more fat and less water (P less than .05) in the empty body than did excipient gilts. These differences were largely eliminated by pGH administration, which induced differential effects in growth performance and body composition in boars, gilts and barrows. Growth hormone administration improved growth rate by 13, 22 and 16% and feed conversion efficiency by 19, 34 and 32% in boars, gilts and barrows, respectively. The reduction of body fat content (g/kg) elicited by pGH was 22, 36 and 33% for boars, gilts and barrows, respectively, with a corresponding increase (P less than .01) of body protein and water content. The magnitude of the pGH responses was greatest for gilts and barrows compared with boars, negating intrinsic sex-effect differences in growth performance and body composition of pigs. Pigs used in this study and treated with pGH exhibited a rate of protein deposition (approximately 225 g/d) far greater than previously reported, and as such redefine the genetic capacity for lean tissue growth by the pig.  相似文献

Crossbred (Chester White X Yorkshire X Duroc) boars were used to evaluate the effects of feeding a progestogen (altrenogest) on body growth, endocrine function (determined during feeding and after withdrawal of altrenogest), carcass composition, boar odor and testicular function (determined after a 30-d withdrawal from altrenogest). Boars from 18 litters were assigned at 12 wk of age to three treatments: 1) 18 control boars; 2) 18 boars fed altrenogest (20 mg/day) for 6 wk from 15 to 21 wk of age, followed by 30 d with no treatment; and 3) 18 boars castrated at 2 wk of age (barrows). Daily gains were greater (P less than .05) in boars fed altrenogest than in barrows through 21 wk of age but were lower (P less than .05) than those of control boars and barrows during the 30-d withdrawal period. Boars fed altrenogest weighed less (P less than .05) than control boars and barrows at 25 wk of age (at slaughter). Both groups of boars were similar in percentage of muscle and had less (P less than .05) backfat than barrows, whereas control boars had the largest (P less than .05) loineye areas. Based on evaluations by a trained sensory panel, intensity of boar odor in fat samples was similar for both groups of boars and was greater (P less than .05) than that for barrows. It was hypothesized in these studies that differences would exist in baseline immune and performance measures among different breeds of pigs, and that these differences would be affected by age of the pig. Baseline immune, plasma cortisol (CORT) concentrations, and performance measures were determined among Berkshire (n = 36), Duroc (n = 18), Meishan (n = 54), Landrace x Yorkshire (White X; n = 36), and Yorkshire (n = 36) pigs at 4, 8, and 12 wk of age. All piglets were weaned at 17 to 21 d of age and moved to a common nursery environment. Total white blood cell (WBC), leukocyte differential, plasma CORT, immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations, natural killer cytotoxicity, neutrophil phagocytosis (PHAGO), and chemotaxis (CHTX) were evaluated. At all ages, plasma CORT was greatest in Meishan pigs, and least in Yorkshires (P < 0.05). Plasma IgG increased with age for all breeds (age: P < 0.01; breed x age: P < 0.005), except that in Meishans, IgG decreased. Natural killer cytotoxicity was greatest (P < 0.05) among Meishan pigs. There were breed x age interactions for neutrophil PHAGO (P < 0.001) and CHTX (P < 0.001). Overall, Yorkshire pigs showed the greatest (P < 0.05) percentage of PHAGO but the least (P < 0.05) CHTX. White X pigs had the greatest (P < 0.05) CHTX response. Berkshire pigs had the greatest (P < 0.001) numbers of neutrophils. At 12 wk of age, Meishan pigs had the least BW gain (P < 0.001), and Durocs had the greatest G:F (P < 0.001). There were no significant sex differences for immune (P > or = 0.15), performance (P > or = 0.20), or CORT (P = 0.70) measures. Pig breed and age influenced both baseline immune measures and plasma CORT in growing pigs, suggesting that pig breed and age are important factors influencing the response to various stressors or infectious challenges.  相似文献

Ninety hybrid (mainly Large White × Landrace) pigs from 2 experimental replicates were used to study the potential use of computed tomography (CT) as a nondestructive technology for estimating the chemical body composition of growing pigs. Body tissue components (lean, fat, and bone) of 6 live pigs from each sex (boars, gilts, and barrows) were assessed by CT imaging before slaughter at approximately 30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 kg of BW. After slaughter, the empty body components were ground and frozen until analyzed for protein, lipid, ash, and moisture content. Several growth functions were evaluated and the allometric function (Y = aBW(b)), which was evaluated as log(10)chemical component weight = b(0) + b(1)log(10)BW, provided the best fit to the data. For each sex, the allometric coefficient (b(1)) for protein (0.92 to 0.99) was close to but less than 1; for ash (1.03 to 1.12), it was close to but greater than 1; for moisture (0.82 to 0.86), it was less than 1, and for lipid (1.61 to 1.71), it was greater than 1. Deposition rates (change in component weight per unit change in BW) for each chemical component were predicted using derivatives of the function. The mean deposition rates for protein and lipid were 0.141 and 0.286 kg/kg of BW gain, respectively. The deposition rate for protein was generally stable across different BW, whereas that for lipid increased as BW increased. In addition, linear, quadratic, exponential, and logistic functions were fitted to the data to study the relationship between the CT data and chemical components. The linear function was assessed to be the best equation, based on the Bayesian information criterion. The prediction equation for protein (kg) = -1.64 + 0.28 × CT lean (kg), and for lipid (kg) = -0.69 + 1.09 × CT fat (kg), had R(2) values of 0.924 and 0.987, respectively. Sex had no effect (P > 0.05) on the prediction of protein and lipid. The effect of BW was not significant (P > 0.05) for the prediction of lipid, but it was significant (P > 0 0.05) for the prediction of protein. However, the addition of BW to the base prediction equation for protein resulted in an increase of only 0.013 in the R(2) value. It was concluded from this study that CT scanning has great potential as a nondestructive technology for estimating the physical and chemical body composition of pigs. Additional research is required to validate the utility and accuracy of the prediction equations.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to estimate whether genetic dissection of QTL on chromosomes 1, 2, 4, and 7, detected in an F2 Meishan x Large White population, can be achieved with a recombinant back-cross progeny test approach. For this purpose, a first generation of backcross (BC1) was produced by using frozen semen of F1 Large White x Meishan boars with Large White females. Four BC1 boars were selected because of their heterozygosity for at least 1 of the 4 regions. The BC1 boars were crossed with Large White sows, and the resulting BC2 offspring were measured for several growth and body composition traits. Contrary to the F2 animals, BC2 animals were also measured for meat quality traits in adductor, gluteus superficialis (GS), longissimus dorsi, and biceps femoris (BF) muscles. Each BC1 boar was tested for a total of 39 traits and for the 4 regions with statistical interval mapping analyses. The QTL effects obtained in BC1 families showed some differences compared with those described in F1 families. However, we confirmed QTL effects for growth in the SW1301-SW2512 markers interval on chromosome 1 and also for body composition in the SW1828-SW2512 markers interval on chromosome 1, in the SW2443-SWR783 markers interval on chromosome 2, and in the SW1369-SW632 markers interval on chromosome 7. In addition, we detected new QTL for growth traits on chromosome 2 and for meat quality traits on chromosomes 1 and 2. Growth of animals from weaning to the end of the test was influenced by the IGF2 gene region on chromosome 2. Concerning meat quality, ultimate pH of adductor, longissimus dorsi, and BF were affected by the interval delimited by UMNP3000 and SW2512 markers on chromosome 1, and a* of GS, L* of BF, and water-holding capacity of GS were affected by QTL located between marker loci SW2443 and SWR783 on chromosome 2. Recombinant progeny testing appeared to be a suitable strategy for the genetic dissection of the QTL investigated.  相似文献

The susceptibility of a carcass to PSE (pale, soft, exudative muscle) can be assessed by measuring the pH value in the lumbar region of the longissimus dorsi muscle at 45 min post-mortem (pH1). The effect of breed, station, sex and season on pH1 was investigated, on a total of 2 775 pig records, including the progeny of 129 Irish Landrace and 126 Large White boars, from two test stations. The heritability of pH1 and its genetic correlation with other performance characteristics were determined within each breed. Landrace pigs had significantly lower values than Large White pigs, indicating a greater susceptibility to PSE in the former. There was no significant difference between the values for boars, castrates and females. There were marked differences from month to month, but no definite seasonal pattern was present nor was there any apparent long-term trend. The heritability for the Landrace breed was higher than that for the Large White breed, and both values indicate that pH1 would respond to selection. The genetic correlations between pH1 and daily gain, food conversion efficiency and backfat (four measurements) were for the most part low and the standard errors relatively high, indicating that there was no strong relationships between pH1 and these performance characteristics.  相似文献
