Summary This paper describes the build-up of tick-borne blood parasites in a group of Hereford heifers imported from New Zealand to the island of Jeju Do, South Korea. All became infected withTheileria sergenti and half withBabesia bigemina. An attempt was made to contain the 2 parasites by treatment with either primaquine phosphate or imidocarb diproprionate. Both drugs had some prophylactic activity againstT. sergenti for at least 26 days and imidocarb diproprionate eliminatedB. bigemina. SinceT. sergenti infections built up subsequently in the animals it is suggested that repeated prophylaxis combined with regular acaricide treatment of imported cattle is necessary to keep piroplasmosis under control.

Resumen El trabajo describe la infectación progresiva con hematozoarios de un grupo de terneras Hereford importadas por Corea del Sur de Nueva Zelandia. Todas se infectaron conTheileria sergenti y la mitad conBabesia bigemina. Los animales se trataron con fosfato de primaquine o con dipropionato de imidocarb. Ambas drogas tuvieron actividad profiláctica contraT. sergenti durante 26 días y el imidocarb eliminóB. bigemina. Debido a que los animales se reinfectaron nuevamente conT. sergenti, se sugiere un régimen profiláctico continuado, combinándolo con baños garrapaticidas en ganado importado para controlar la piroplasmosis.

Résumé Cet article décrit le développement d'affections parasitaires sanguines transmises par les tiques dans un groupe de génisses importées de Nouvelle-Zélande en Corée du Sud. Tous les animaux ont été infectés parTheileria sergenti et la moitié parBabesia bigemina. Un essai a été fait pour contrôler ces deux parasites par des traitements avec du phosphate de primaquine ou du diproprionate d'imidocarbamide. Les deux produits ont eu une certaine activité pendant au moins 26 jours contreT. sergenti et l'imidocarbamide a éliminéBabesia bigemina. Les infections àTheileria sergenti ayant continué, il est suggéré qu'un régime répété de prophylaxie combiné avec un traitement acaricide des animaux importés est nécessire pour lutter efficacement contre les piroplasmoses.

Antibodies against Theileria sergenti and Babesia ovata were detected by indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) and complement fixation (CF) methods. Both of the antibodies against T. sergenti and B. ovata could be detected with a single IFA testing procedure. Complement fixing antibody tests for T. sergenti in experimentally infected cattle were positive for about 70 days after the parasites could no longer be detected in the blood smear, and were negative thereafter. B. ovata CF antibody titres were negative on the 270th day post-infection, while the IFA tests against both parasites were positive for longer periods. B. ovata IFA-test titres remained relatively high until the 420th day after inoculation. In a survey of sera from naturally infected animals, the rate of detecting antibodies against both parasites was higher using the IFA test than using the CF test. The IFA method was more effective for diagnosis of Babesia infection than the CF technique.  相似文献

We examined the relationships between calf productivity, anemia and Theileria orientalis sergenti infection from records of 109 Japanese shorthorn calves during a grazing period and we quantified the relative importance of the T. orientalis sergenti infection‐resistance criteria used. A decrease in average parasitemia (AvePara) and an increase in average packed cell volume (AvePCV) would cause a decrease in the number of drug treatments. An increase in AvePCV would decrease the number of drug treatments more efficiently than a decrease in AvePara. An increase in AvePCV would cause an increase in dairy gain, while a decrease in AvePara would cause a decrease in dairy gain. Therefore, an improvement in the capacity to control anemia development would improve T. orientalis sergenti infection resistance more efficiently than an improvement in the capacity to control parasitemia development.  相似文献

Cattle experimentally infected withBabesia bigemina orTheileria sergenti or mixed infestations of the two parasites were treated with Total Alkaloid ofPeganum harmala L. The results showed that treatment was effective againstB. bigemina infection, had a marked effect on the course of infection withT. sergenti and some effect on the course of the mixed infection.

Critical and controlled anthelmintic tests were carried out using tetramisole hydrochloride per os against adult and immature gastro-entestinal nematodes of sheep. The drug was highly effective against adult Haemonchus contortus, Ostertagia spp, Trichostrongylus axei, intestinal Trichostrongylus spp, Nematodirus spp, Oesophagostomum columbi-anum and Chabertia ovina, and against 5th stage worms of the two latter species, at 10 mg/kg bodyweight and above. Efficiency against Trichuris ovis ranged from 67 to 100% at 20 mg/kg. A dose rate of 10 mg/kg was 98 to 100% effective against 14-day old H. contortus and T. axei, and against both 7-day and 14-day old intestinal Trichostrongylus spp infections, but a rate of 15 mg/kg was required for high activity against 14-day old Ostertagia spp. Seven-day old infections of H. contortus, T. axei and particularly Ostertagia spp were more resistant, and drug activity was variable at a dose rate of 15 mg/kg. Tetramisole would appear to have good activity against 7-day and 14-day old larvae of O. columbianum at 15 mg/kg in lambs in which the development of this species tended to be retarded.  相似文献

An intramuscular dose of 1.2 mg kg-1 of imidocarb dipropionate (IMDP) was effective in controlling fatal infections with Babesia ovis in sheep. The sheep were infected by the intravenous injection of sheep blood containing B ovis. A severe recrudescence of infection occurred in most sheep 10 to 14 days after therapy but this could be controlled by a second dose of 1.2 mg kg-1 IMDP. Studies on the toxicology, residues and metabolism of IMDP showed this to be a safe dosage regimen. Transient or mild signs of toxicity were seen at 2.4 and 4.8 mg kg-1 IMDP. Severe toxicity was observed in sheep treated with 9.6 mg kg-1.  相似文献

Assays dealing with the therapeutic and prophylactic activity of isometamidium on experimental infections by Trypanosoma vivax and T. evansi were carried out. The drug was found to be highly effective against T. vivax infection in sheep and cattle in which periods of protection ranging from 118 to 195 days were achieved. No complete effects against infection by T. evansi were observed. The drug was well tolerated in sheep and cattle while side-effects were noted in treated mares. It was concluded that isometamidium could be used to prevent damage and economical losses caused by T. vivax in Venezuela.  相似文献

Critical anthelmintic tests and controlled trials were used to assess the efficiency of laevo -tetramisole hydrochloride against nematode infections in sheep and cattle.
In sheep, oral dose rates of 5 mg/kg and above were 94 to 100% effective against adult Haemonchus contortus , intestinal Trichostrongylus spp, Nematodirus spp, Oesophagostomum columbianum, O. venulosum and Chabertia ovina . A dose rate of 7.5 mg/kg was required for consistently high activity against Ostertagia spp, but activity against Trichostrongylus axei remained variable at this dose level. Efficiency against Trichuris ovis ranged from 76 to 100% at a dose rate of 10 mg/kg. The drug was 94 to 100% effective against 7-day old and 14-day old H. contortus , intestinal Trichostrongylus spp and O. colun bianum infections, and 83 to 89% effective against 14-day old Ostertagia spp and T. axei , at a dose rate of 5 mg/kg. Seven-day old Ostertagia spp larvae were highly resistant at a dose rate of 10 mg/kg, while activity against T. axei infections of the same age appeared variable at 5 and 10 mg/kg.
In cattle, subcutaneous treatment at dose rates of 1.5 mg/kg and above, and oral treatment at 7.5 mg/kg, were 93 to 100% effective against adult Haemonchus placei , intestinal Trichostrongylus spp, Nematodirus helvetianus, Cooperia spp and Oesophagostomum radiatum , and 84 to 98% effective against Ostertagia ostertagi . Against Trichostrongylus axei , a rate of 5 mg/kg subcutaneously was 83% effective, and a rate of 7.5 mg/kg orally 97% effective, while these dose rates gave 88 to 100% clearance of adult Dictyocaulus viviparous .  相似文献

SUMMARY: The efficiency of the broad spectrum anthelmintic nitroscanate against tapeworm and nematode infections of dogs was tested in artificially or naturally infected dogs. The safety of the compound was also evaluated in acute, subacute and chronic toxicity tests. At the recommended single dose rate of 50 mg/kg given to the dogs with food, nitroscanate was 98% efficient against Taenia hydatigena, T. ovis and T. pisiformis. The drug was highly efficient against Echinococcus granulosus only at the dose rate of 200 mg/kg given twice but total elimination of worms was not achieved. Natural infections of Dipylidium caninum, Ancylostoma spp and Uncinaria stenocephala were totally eliminated from all dogs at the dose rate of 25 mg/kg or higher. Nitroscanate was 97% efficient against adult Toxocara canis at a single dose of 50 mg/kg. When the dose was repeated 24 hours later total elimination of both mature worms and immature worms in puppies aged 2 weeks was achieved. The repeated dose of 100 mg/kg removed 98% of early immature worms from puppies aged 3 days. The drug was 100% efficient against adult Toxascaris leonina at a single dose of 50 mg/kg and 90.5% efficiency was achieved against early 4th stage larvae by two doses of 50 mg/kg. Nitroscanate was not efficient against Trichuris vulpis. The drug was efficient for the removal of Toxocara cati and Ancylostoma tubaeforme from cats. Nitroscanate caused no serious symptoms of toxicity at dose rates up to 10,000 mg/kg in single or repeated doses in young or older adult dogs. The drug was safely given to dogs during pregnancy, to young puppies and to cats. The regular use of nitroscanate as a broad spectrum anthelmintic for the prevention and control of parasitic infections of dogs is discussed.  相似文献

To evaluate the transplacental transfer of Theileria sergenti infection in cattle, we used DNA probes to detect T. sergenti in 6 pregnant cows and their calves. All the animals were monitored by parasitologic, serologic, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for a predicted 875-base-pair (bp) DNA product and a 684-bp amplicon detected by nested PCR in the blood and spleens of aborted fetuses. An open reading frame (ORF) starting at nucleotide 170 and terminating at position 1021 was shown to code for a polypeptide of 283 amino acid residues. All 6 dams and 5 calves were positive for T. sergenti in all tests. One calf was positive only with nested PCR. We conclude that transplacental transmission of T. sergenti is a significant problem. The relevance of the data in the programmed introduction of new (especially pregnant) animals into established clean herds needs serious consideration with regard to control of theileriosis and other tickborne diseases.  相似文献

The purposes of this study were to evaluate pyrantel pamoate administered orally at 20 mg/kg body weight for the removal of induced or natural infections of Ancylostoma tubaeformae and Toxocara cati in cats and to compare the efficacy of paste (40 mg base/g) and granule (80 mg base/g) formulations. Thirty cats of mixed breeding and various ages with natural and/or induced infections of A. tubaeformae and T. cati were assigned to one of three treatment groups: (1) non-medicated controls; (2) paste formulation at 20 mg base/kg; or (3) granule formulation at 20 mg base/kg. Infections were induced by feeding the cats on carcasses of infected mice. The study was conducted in replicates of at least one animal per treatment per replicate. The study parameters included clinical observations, physical examinations, faecal egg counts and the numbers, species and stages of worms recovered at necropsy. The paste formulation was 99.3% and 99.7% effective in reducing egg counts of Ancylostoma sp. and Toxocara sp. respectively. The granule formulation was 97.7% and 99.9% effective in reducing faecal egg counts of Ancylostoma sp. and Toxocara sp. respectively. When administered in paste form, pyrantel pamoate was 99.5% effective in removing adult Ancylostoma and 100.0% effective against adult Toxocara. The granule formulation was 97.9% effective against Ancylostoma and 100% effective against Toxocara. No toxic effects of either formulation of the drug were noted.  相似文献

Bovine piroplasmosis caused byTheileria sergenti is a major cause of economic loss in grazing cattle in Japan. Infected calves show chronic anaemia with intraerythrocytic piroplasms and occasionally die in severe cases. We found that parasite stocks and isolates consist of genetically and antigenically mixed populations. To differentiate parasite populations bearing 3 allelic forms of p32/34, an immunodominant piroplasm surface protein, 3 sets of oligonucleotide primers were designed to amplify either of 3 alleles by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). By using this allele-specific PCR, we found that the majority ofT. sergenti-infected calves in Japan harbored mixed parasite populations bearing C and I type parasites. To controlTheileria infection, we produced 2 vaccine candidates: recombinant baculovirus p32 and synthetic peptide containing Lys-Glu-Lys (KEK) motif. Immunization with either recombinant p32 or synthetic peptide containing KEK sequences with Freund’s complete adjuvant resulted in low parasitemia and reduced the clinical symptoms compared to control calves. Interestingly, the parasite with the p32 allelic form corresponding to the one used as the immunogen was suppressed.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic and prophylactic efficacy of imidocarb dipropionate (IMDP) against babesiosis and to determine specific antibodies against Babesia ovis in experimentally infected lambs. Thirty-six 6-month-old splenectomized lambs were used. The lambs were randomly divided into six groups with six animals each, and were intravenously inoculated with 50 mL B. ovis-infected erythrocytes as follows: group I (therapy group) was treated with IMDP (1.2 mg/kg body weight) starting on the day of onset of clinical signs of babesiosis after the inoculation; group II (untreated control animals) was not treated with any therapeutic treatment after the inoculation; groups III, IV, V and VI (prophylaxis groups) were administered IMDP (2.4 mg/kg body weight) 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks before the inoculation, respectively. The animals were housed in a tick-proof room with water and food ad libitum up to the 30th day post-inoculation (PI). The lambs were monitored from the first day PI by recording the manifestation of clinical disease, rectal temperature, and the degree of parasitaemia. All the lambs became infected with B. ovis, except five animals from group III, which were treated 1 week prior to experimental infection. Other animals showed signs of acute clinical babesiosis. The animals treated with IMDP (group I) were able to clear the parasite from the blood circulation after 48 h post-treatment. The recrudescence of B. ovis was observed in two lambs 7 days after treatment, and they were treated with the second similar dose of the drug. Six lambs (1, 1, 2 and 2 lambs in group III, IV, V and VI, respectively) from the prophylaxis groups died within 7-17 days after showing high parasitaemia and clinical symptoms of the disease. Regardless of the clinical symptoms, 83.30% and 66.66% of the lambs which were administered IMDP 1-2 and 3-4 weeks before, were determined to be protected against the virulent field strain of B. ovis.  相似文献

The efficacy of oxfendazole, given at a dose rate of 10 mg/kg for three consecutive days, against adult and larval Toxascaris leonina was determined in four litters of naturally infected adolescent greyhounds. When administered to five dogs 10 weeks after exposure to infectiori, oxfendazole gave an efficacy value of 100 per cent as determined by comparison of the numbers of adult worms expelled and the numbers remaining at subsequent post mortem examination. When medication was given only five weeks after exposure to infection, the number of immature T. leonina in 10 treated pups was found to be reduced by 92-1 per cent as compared with 10 matched, untreated controls. Incidental infections of Toxocara canis and Uncinaria stenocephala were adequately controlled but the treatment was less effective against Trichuris vulpis and Strongyloides species.  相似文献

SUMMARY Routine serotyping of T. foetus Isolates from a bull and infected cows showed that the strain in the bull had apparently changed from var. brisbane to var. belfast over a period of 4 months between tests. The significance of this change in the predominance of one serotype over another in mixed infections in vitro and in herds was discussed. The report indicates that the phenomenon should be considered in studies on the epidemiology of trichomoniasis.  相似文献

Six 6-month-old bulls were experimentally infected with five different isolates of Trypanosoma evansi; two received the same isolate and the other four received different isolates. The parasitaemias and serum antigen levels were monitored regularly by the haematocrit centrifuge technique (HCT) and antigen-detection ELISA (Ag-ELISA), respectively. Trypanosomal antigen was demonstrated by the Ag-ELISA by 10–14 days post inoculation in four cattle, while parasitaemias were first found to be positive in individual cattle over a longer period of time post inoculation (6–28 days). In two cattle, the Ag-ELISA values were also positive when the animals were found to harbour trypanosomes by the HCT and only turned negative 3 days after treatment, while the ELISA values fluctuated during the experiment in another two bulls. The remaining two cattle never produced positive ELISA results despite positive parasitological results. The antibody titres in all six cattle started to rise around 10 days post inoculation and then stayed high throughout the experiment. It was concluded that the Ag-ELISA would produce some false negative results in the early stages of T. evansi infection owing to variations in the balance of parasitaemia and antibody levels in the circulation, and in the pathogenicity of parasite strains.  相似文献

Effect of tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) on the patellar ligament has not been described. Our purpose was to evaluate the patellar ligament radiographically and ultrasonographically before and after a TTA. Twenty‐one stifles (20 dogs) were evaluated preoperatively (T0), and at six (n=18) (T1) and 16 weeks (n=17) (T2) postTTA. Radiographically, proximal and distal thickness of the patellar ligament was assessed and a ratio to the total length of the ligament was calculated to compensate for the magnification. Ultrasound evaluation included measurements of the transverse thickness and cross‐sectional area at three different levels, as well as a subjective score of ligament changes. In comparison with T0, all radiographic and ultrasonographic measurements increased significantly, 6 weeks postoperatively (P≤0.04), and did not change 16 weeks postoperatively compared with T1. The subjective score worsened significantly from T0 to T1 and T0 to T2 (P<0.0001), and improved significantly from T1 to T2 (P=0.02). Larger cage size was associated with a more severe increase in radiographic proximal thickness to total length ratio and ultrasonographic middle transverse area at both follow‐up examinations (P0.02). Dogs in which arthrotomy was not performed appeared to have ultrasonographically less changes. In conclusion, patellar desmopathy was a common postoperative sequel to TTA. Surgical trauma, arthrotomy, perfusion injury, complete vs. partial cranial cruciate ligament rupture, larger tibial advancement, postoperative activity or altered insertion angle of the patellar ligament at the tibial tuberosity are suggested causes, that should be elucidated in a larger study cohort.  相似文献

Eighty two cattle naturally infected with haemosporidians were treated with total alkaloid hydrochloride ofPeganum harmale L. (0.5 mg/kg/day). Fifty eight cases withTheileria sergenti showed a cure rate of 86%; thirteen cases withTheileria annulata showed a cure rate of 85%; eight cattle infected withBabesia bigemina showed a cure rate of 88% and three cases ofAnaplasma marginale were completely cured. The results suggested that the curative effect of total alkaloid ofP. harmale was better than that of diminazene aceturate and produced minimal side effects. The alkaloid could also be administered to pregnant animals. It was concluded that the total alkaloid ofP. harmale showed a marked effect as a treatment for haemosporidican infections in cattle.

The anthelmintic efficacy of 6 non-benzimidazole compounds and thiabendazole against standardised, benzimidazole resistant strains of H. contortus and T. colubriformis in sheep was determined using a controlled test. All compounds were administered intraruminally at their recommended therapeutic dose rates and 4 of the compounds were also assessed at half their recommended therapeutic dose rates. Levimisole at a dose of 6.4 mg/kg body weight, morantel at 4.4 mg/kg and 8.8 mg/kg, naphthalophos at 6.25 mg/kg and 12.5 mg/kg, rafoxanide at 7.5 mg/kg and phenothiazine at 530 mg/kg were 98% or more effective in removing adult infections of benzimidazole resistant H. contortus. Rafoxanide at 3.75 mg/kg, phenothiazine at 265 mg/kg and carbon tetrachloride at 0.05ml/kg were less effective, removing 80%, 73% and 72% respectively of the benzimidazole resistant H. contortus worm burdens. Against the benzimidazole resistant T. colubriformis levamisole at 6.4 mg/kg, and morantel at 4.4 mg/kg and 8.8 mg/kg removed 99%, 68% and 86% respectively of the adult infections. All other anthelmintics had little or no efficacy at the dose rates tested. Thiabendazole at 44 mg/kg had no significant effect against these strains of H. contortus and T. colubriformis. Several non-benzimidazole anthelmintics have shown high efficacy in this experiment and should be suitable for treating infections with benzimidazole resistant H. contortus. Of the anthelmintics tested, only levamisole and morantel show high efficacy against benzimidazole resistant T. colubriformis.  相似文献
