Six groups of 0 + marron Cherax tenuimanus were reared on commercial marron diets based on two different fish meals in a study lasting 4 months. Both diets were prepared in a stable and an unstable pelleted form. Matron fed with koi carp or salmon diet and unfed were used as reference groups. Matron were reared communally in tanks (5 m−2) and individually in an intensive crayfish culture system (ICCS, 25 m−2). Marron were fed at the rate of 6.5% of their body weight per week. Groups fed with stable diets showed larger weight increment at moult, shorter intermoult period, and higher specific growth rate than groups fed with similar unstable diets. Stable matron diets resulted in faster growth than fish diets. There were no differences in hepatopancreatic indices of marron fed with stable diets or similar unstable diets in the ICCS. The condition of hepatopancreata of marron reared in communal tanks were better than those of marron reared in the ICCS on a similar diet. Results indicate that marron production can be improved using stable pelleted diets in both intensive and semi-intensive culture.  相似文献

Juvenile Australian freshwater crayfish ( Cherax tenuimanus ) were individually housed in an experimental battery system and fed HFX CRD 84 and BML 81 S, two proposed standard reference diets for studies of crustacean nutrition. The HFX CRD 84 diet was accepted more readily than the BML 81 S diet. After 100 days, mean weight gain of marron fed the HFX CRD 84 diet was significantly greater than that of those fed the BML 81 S diet. Growth rate, measured 118 percent weight pin per ecdysis, declined during three successive 50 day periods. Growth on the proposed reference diets ranged from 16 to 33% of that achieved with pond raised marron of similar age. Both diets may be useful in the development of species specific modifications relative to nutrient composition.  相似文献

Abstract. The possibility of oral transmission of the pleistophorid microsporidian parasite Vavraia parastacida Langdon from marron, Cherax tenuimanus (Smith), was investigated by feeding infected marron and yabby, Cherax albidus Clark, muscle to juvenile marron and yabbies. Infections were established in a proportion of marron and yabbies with tissue from both crayfish, and both mounted a vigorous haemocytic response which failed to arrest progress of the disease. The disease appeared to progress more rapidly in the yabbies, in which no natural cases have been found. It would appear inadvisable to mix marron and yabbies on crayfish farms unless the marron are first demonstrated to be free of the parasite. As an intermediate host is not essential to transmission, which can occur through cannibalism, the exclusion of possible vectors will not control vavraiasis on crayfish farms, It remains possible that an alternate life cycle involving intermediate or transport hosts also takes place.  相似文献

A review of approaches currently used to measure growth in freshwater crayfish under experimental and pond grow-out conditions is presented. The review examined 206 papers on growth and production of freshwater crayfish of which 34 were selected for detailed investigation. Selection was based on the amount of information provided in the published report and on the species studied. The review was restricted to six crayfish species: Cherax tenuimanus (marron), C. destructor (yabbie), C. quadricarinatus (red claw), Procambarus clarkii (red swamp crayfish), Astacus astacus (noble crayfish), and Pacifastacus leniusculus (signal crayfish). Growth indices reported included instantaneous growth rate (IGR), absolute growth rate (AGR), slope of log weight against time (GRE) and specific growth rate (SGR, IGR100). Studies were performed for varying time intervals under a wide range of stocking densities. Most reports did not express growth rate as an index but simply reported growth in terms of initial and final weights. The range of approaches used to express growth performance in freshwater crayfish growth studies hinders comparisons of growth rate and production findings. It is suggested that the reports of studies of growth performance in cultured crayfish include a growth rate parameter as well as initial and final weights. SGR is recommended as the parameter of choice since it is based on an exponential growth trend which is typically observed in measurements of weight increase with time in cultured juvenile and early adult crayfish.  相似文献

Pond growout of Cherax tenuimanus to two years of age provided data for mean crayfish weight, surviving density and distribution of individual sizes at intervals and final harvest for 12 single year-class cohorts. Final mean size (47–156 g) was most significantly related to surviving density (4.5–0.7/m2). A hyperbolic model with a harvest date variable accounted for 89% of the variation in mean weight. The biological basis of this model is that the reciprocal of density, i.e., pond area per crayfish, represents food supply for a bottom-dwelling crayfish. By incorporating the Richards growth function, the hyperbolic model can be more realistically fitted to include the limit to potential size at very low densities. The growth-density relationship developed after an initial period of 300 days of low growth (to ∼ 10% of final size) and high mortality. Then, mean weight increased rapidly and density stabilized. Final cumulative production (1.401–3,922 kg/ha) and harvest biomass (1,110–2,991 kg/ha) both increased linearly with density. Survival of the total amount of crayfish produced was about 75% at harvest. Although cohort size distributions were positively skewed, the arithmetic mean size employed in the model was very closely and linearly related to the geometric mean of the lognormal distribution, The causal basis and assumptions of the growthdensity model are discussed in relation to resource sharing by individuals and the disproportionate influence of size-related dominance behaviour.  相似文献

Approximately 440 base pairs (bp) of the mitochondrial 16S ribosomal ribose nucleic acid (rRNA) coding region were sequenced from 13 marron, Cherax tenuimanus (Smith), samples from six locations and samples of two additional Cherax species from Western Australia. The results indicated that, with the exception of the Margaret River, no variation was found within or between marron populations. In contrast, marron from the Margaret River were found to be polymorphic for two divergent haplotypes (2.76% divergence). These findings were consistent with allozyme data that highlight the general lack of genetic variability within and between populations of this species apart from the Margaret River stocks. The genetic polymorphisms in the Margaret River stocks contrasted with earlier studies and indicated the recent translocation and mixing of genetically differentiated stocks within this river system. The implications of these findings for the conservation and management of genetic diversity within marron are discussed.  相似文献

The aim of this experiment was to determine the effects of dietary supplementation with mannan oligosaccharide (MOS; BioMos, Alltech, USA) on the gut microbiota and histology of marron, Cherax tenuimanus. Marron were fed six different diets supplemented with 0%, 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.8% of MOS for a duration of 112 days. Total bacteria in the gut were highest when marron were fed diets which included 0.1% to 0.4% BioMos, whereas total bacteria/Vibrio spp. ratio was highest in the marron fed 0.4% BioMos diet only. The marron fed 0.2% and 0.4% BioMos diets showed normal morphology and higher densities of microvilli, and thicker layer of gut epithelium than other inclusion rates. The results suggest that application of 0.2% to 0.4% of MOS in the diet improves digestive system health in marron.  相似文献

Juvenile marron, Cherax tenuimanus were cultured in an intensive crayfish culture system for a period of six months to study the effects of sump tank size on crayfish growth, survival, and production. Water volume in the large sump system was 2750 L and in the small sump tank system was 500 L. Crayfish were held in individual compartments (surface area 320 cm2, depth 10 cm) and fed with commercial pellets (30% protein; 3-5% body weight per week). Specific growth rate (SGR) was 0.75%/day in the large sump system and 0.68%/day in the small sump system; survival was 83% in the large sump system and 71% in the small sump system; and biomass roduction (B) was 239 g/m2 in the large sump system and 158 g/m2 in the small sump system. These values were all higher (P < 0.05) in the large sump system. The results suggest that crayfish production could be improved by using large sump tanks in recirculating intensive crayfish culture systems.  相似文献

Abstract. Microsporidiosis in the freshwater crayfish Cherax tenuimanus (Smith), or marron, was found to be due to a pleistophorid characterized by a single sporulation sequence producing eight, 16, 32 or 64 monomorphometric spores in a sporophorous vesicle with a fine two-layered wall. Infection occurred predominantly in locomotor, cardiac and gastrointestinal striated muscle. The disease ranged from subclinical infections where haemocytic encapsulation and infiltration of the spore masses controlled its progress, to fulminant disease with multifocal infection in the absence of effective haemocytic responses. The lethal lesions in the latter cases appeared to be those in the proventriculus. Prevalence of infection and incidence of mortality were low. The same microsporidian was found in subclinically infected C. quinquecarinatus (Gray) and C. quadricarinatus (von Mortens).  相似文献

The efficacy of dietary supplementation of mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) (Bio‐Mos®, Aqua Grade; Alltech, Lexington, KY, USA) was evaluated on survival, growth, physiological and immunological parameters of marron, Cherax tenuimanus. Marron were fed six different isonitrogenous and isocalorific diets supplemented with 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8% of MOS for a duration of 112 d and examined for survival and growth every 28 d. Physiological and immunological indicators were measured every 56 d. After 112 d, survival was the highest when marron were fed 0.2 and 0.4% MOS supplemented diets. Wet tail muscle index (TMIwet) and dry tail muscle index (TMIdry) of marron fed MOS supplemented diets were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than marron fed diet without MOS. Osmoregulatory capacity was highest in marron fed 0.4% MOS. Marron fed MOS supplemented diets had lower (P < 0.05) bacteraemia than marron fed diet without MOS. Hemolymph clotting time was the lowest and granular cells were the highest in marron fed 0.2 and 0.4% MOS. The results suggest that feeding 0.2–0.4% MOS in the diet increases the health status of marron.  相似文献

A trial was conducted in 12 purpose-built, commercial, drainable, earthen ponds to evaluate the effect of fish and plant protein and lipid source on the growth, condition indices, and body composition of marron (Cherax tenuimanus). Juvenile marron (1.3±0.28 S.E. g) at the stocking densities of three per square meter were fed for a period of 1 year with four different formulated isoenergetic practical diets (D1, D2, D3, and D4). Three of the test diets (D1, D2, and D3) were isonitrogenous whereas the fourth test diet (D4) was protein-free. Protein and lipid sources in D1 were from Lupin (Lupinus albus) whereas protein and lipid sources in D2 and D3 were from fish meal. Fish oil (3.5%) was added to D1, D3, and D4 whereas sunflower oil was added to D2 and D4 in order to make them isoenergetic. The four test diets were randomly allocated to three replicate ponds.

The lack of protein in D4 did not significantly influence (P>0.05) the mean final weight and specific growth rate of marron. Survival was low in all ponds (13.82–34.66%) but feeding with D4 resulted in a significantly (P<0.05) higher survival than marron fed with D1 and D2. Feeding a diet containing a combination of fish protein and fish oil (D3) resulted in significantly higher (P<0.05) wet tail muscles-to-body weight ratio than was observed with other diets. Tail muscles protein level of all marron was significantly lower (P<0.05) at the end of the trial than at the beginning. EPA and DHA in hepatopancreas and tail muscles of marron were affected by the four test diets. The inclusion of plant protein in formulated diets had a negative impact on the pond environment due to significantly higher unionised ammonia levels that resulted in lower survival. Juvenile marron fed with a plant protein diet had significantly lower protein levels in their hepatopancreas compared to those fed with diets containing animal protein. Feeding marron with lupin protein source (D1) and plant oil (D2) for 1 year did not alter the lipid content of their hepatopancreas. Four test diets had no influence on the fat content of marron hepatopancreas; however, these test diets significantly reduced the protein content of the tail muscles of marron.

Environmental variables, particularly temperature, nitrogen metabolites, and the natural productivity of the ecosystem, greatly influenced the nutritional requirements of the juvenile marron under culture.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The effect of three stocking densities (3, 6, and 13 animals/ m2) on growth, survival, biomass, harvest rate, and the size distribution of 3-month-old marron, Cherax tenuimanus(3.1 ± 0.1 g mean initial weight), was assessed in a 160-day trial in a recirculating system. There was no difference (P>0.05) in specific growth rates (SGR) at the end of 160 days. Survival of marron at 13/m2 was significantly lower than marron stocked at 3 and 6/m2 (70.0% and 57.5%, respectively). Harvest rate of marron stocked at 6/m2 was 101.3 g/m2, which was significantly higher than the harvest rate of marron stocked at 3 and 13/m2 (48.7 g/m2 and 58.7 g/m2, respectively). By the end of the trial, the densities of all treatments had decreased to the same level (2.3 to 3.0/m2). Final size frequency distribution of marron at the stocking density of 6/m2 was flat and less positively skewed as compared to the 3 and 13/m2treatments. Therefore, the stocking density of 6/m2 is recommended under semi-controlled environment.  相似文献

The current study evaluated the effect of soluble dietary cellulose on growth, survival and digestive enzyme activity in three endemic, Australian freshwater crayfish species (redclaw: Cherax quadricarinatus, marron: C. tenuimanus, yabby: C. destructor). Separate individual feeding trials were conducted for late‐stage juveniles from each species in an automated recirculating freshwater, culture system. Animals were fed either a test diet (TD) that contained 20% soluble cellulose or a reference diet (RD) substituted with the same amount of corn starch, over a 12‐week period. Redclaw fed with RD showed significantly higher (P < 0.05) specific growth rates (SGR) compared with animals fed the TD, while SGR of marron and yabby fed the two diets were not significantly different. Expressed cellulase activity levels in redclaw were not significantly different between diets. Marron and yabby showed significantly higher cellulase activity when fed the RD (P < 0.05). Amylase and protease activity in all three species were significantly higher in the animals fed with RD (P < 0.05). These results indicate that test animals of all three species appear to utilize starch more efficiently than soluble dietary cellulose in their diet. The inclusion of 20% soluble cellulose in diets did not appear, however, to have a significant negative effect on growth rates.  相似文献

Forty-two, 4-month pond trials were carried out on a large indigenous crayfish in south-western Australia — a candidate species for commercial aquaculture. Since growth rate and density are inversely related in this species the aim was to establish an intermediate range of density giving commercially acceptable values of growth rate and biomass. Survival over 4 months averaged 80.5% (30.7–100%) and was independent of density in the range 2–15/m2; low values (two below 50%) were due to oxygen depletion from overfeeding. The complex relationship between mean individual weight gain/4-month trial and initial mean individual weight was described indirectly using Mauchline's (1977) linear plot of log growht rate in length against initial length. A multiple regression equation accounted for 93.3% of the variability in log growth rate with 45.7% due to initial size, 40.6% due to seasonal water temperatures, 6.1% due to initial density and 0.8% due to feeding rate. Similar transformations were used to relate statistically production and biomass change to initial mean weight. Growth, production and biomass schedules were constructed for the most favourable temperature area of the south-west. A mean weight of 45 g at a biomass of 2100 kg/ha was predicted for the end of the first year of life and 111 g at 3175 kg/ha for the second year. Wide variability in individual weights represents a marketing problem. Plant material (poultry and lucerne pellets, compost) was supplied at rates of up to 1.0 kg/m2 per 4 months as a substrate for detrital formation. Pollution from these materials generated limiting oxygen deficiencies.  相似文献

Respiration of Cherax tenuimanus (marron) was compared with that of Cherax albidus (yabbie) from measurements in 20 closed system tests (respiration induced oxygen depletion) at ? 25° C. Comparisons were made from the point of inflexion (maximum rate of respiration) of the reversed, asymmetrical, S-shaped oxygen—time curves described by the Richard's equation. Yabbies attained the maximum respiration rate at a lower oxygen concentration (4.0–4.5 mg/l) than marron (5.0–6.0 mg/l). The species did not differ in maximum respiration rate (0.000176 mg/g min?1) which fell within the range of previous estimates for yabbies. The coefficient for respiratory dependence on body weight was 0.788.A further 25 bioassays on groups of 5 marron were performed at constant, low, oxygen levels and 20°C. The 24-hour LC50 of 7.25% of oxygen saturation approximated the incipient lethal, low oxygen level for marron. The survival time of yabbies for an LC50 of 4.9% oxygen was 45 hours compared with 14 hours for marron.  相似文献

A 180‐day experiment was carried out under controlled conditions to compare the effects of three commercial dry diets on survival, growth and body composition of juvenile Pacifastacus leniusculus from the onset of exogenous feeding (stage 2). Protein levels in the diets were 55.5% [high‐protein content (HP) diet], 40.3% [medium‐protein content (MP)] and 33.2% [low‐protein content (LP)]. Diets were supplemented with restricted amounts of live fresh Artemia nauplii up to day 120. No significant differences in survival among diets were found along the trial, with final values around 68.5%. During the live feed supplementation, growth was similar with the three diets. At the end of the trial, weight with HP or with MP was similar (around 2.32 g) and significantly higher than with LP (1.97 g). Thus, a diet with 40% of protein can be suitable, as it allowed similar results as the diet containing 55%. Levels of protein in diets and in crayfish muscle were positively correlated (r=0.8). This study also shows that an intensive rearing up to 180 days with good survival and growth rates is possible using dry diets for finfish species supplemented with live feed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   Macrophytes stranded on a beach provide food and habitat for many kinds of animals and play important roles in coastal ecosystems. Macrophytes stranded on a sampling beach (56 m long) along a sargassacean forest (400 m long and 88 m wide) were collected every 10 days from late April 2003 to late May 2004. The weight of macrophytes stranded per meter of beach amounted to 1733 g dry wt/m per year. Sargassacean plants were dominant and constituted 72.9% (1263 g dry wt/m per year) of whole stranded macrophytes. Large numbers of macrophytes were stranded just after heavy winter storms and the maximum weight of stranded macrophytes in winter was 407 g dry wt/m. Stranded macrophytes also increased in May to July; the deterioration period of sargassacean species in this region, and the maximum weight in this period was 233 g dry wt/m. The number of sargassacean plants stranded with holdfast increased only in winter. These results suggest that winter storms have an important role in stranding sargassacean plants at Yoro Beach.  相似文献

The influence of dietary protein/lipid levels on growth and survival in juvenile crayfish (Procambarus acanthophorus) was evaluated during a 12‐week nutritional trial. Twenty experimental diets were formulated containing different protein (200, 250, 300, 350 and 400 g kg?1) and lipid (60, 80, 100 and 120 g kg?1) levels. A bifactorial model (5 × 4) was used with three replicates and 15 crayfish (0.014±0.006 g) per replicate, in a recirculation system with 60–15 L rectangular tanks and a biological filter, the culture conditions were a photoperiod of 12:12 h L:D and temperature 24.7±1.0 °C. Total survival ranged from 66.6% to 86.6%, with no differences attributed to treatments. Dietary protein levels had a significant effect on growth gain and nutritional efficiency; in contrast, lipid levels had no effect on juvenile performance. The 250/120 (protein/lipid) treatment promoted the most efficient growth (final weight: 3.09 g, weight gain: 21 995%, specific growth rate: 3.35% day?1); the less efficient growth was observed in juveniles fed with 400 g kg?1 protein diets. The quadratic regression model indicated 279 g kg?1 as the optimal protein level for crayfish growth, while levels between 211 and 232 g kg?1 could minimize the feeding costs without affecting growth.  相似文献
