为提高牦牛生产的社会、经济和生态效益,满足人们对无污染的牦牛奶、肉等绿色食品日益增长的需要,本研究利用娟姗牛、安格斯牛和野牦牛的冻精杂交改良甘南牦牛,筛选最佳杂交组合。结果发现,与当地牦牛相比,娟姗牛、安格斯牛和野牦牛与本地牦牛杂交的F1代公母犊牛的初生重、3月龄体重和6月龄体重均显著高于本地牦牛犊(P<0.05),其中娟姗牛、安格斯、野牦牛的杂交F1代的公犊牛初生重分别提高了30.12%、18.21%和13.21%;3月龄体重分别提高了7.89%、3.70%和1.94%;6月龄体重分别达到了81.26±1.23kg、79.26±1.04kg和78.42±1.13kg,而母犊牛6月龄体重分别为77.78±2.26kg、78.07±1.97kg和75.85±1.32kg。因此,利用娟姗牛、安格斯牛与牦牛种间杂交育种可显著改善犏牛生产性能,这将为提高甘南牦牛生产性能、生产优质牛肉提供依据。  相似文献

Hematologic and/or serum chemical analyses were done on a total of 27 non-tranquilized adult and juvenile wild sea otters, 66 tranquilized adult and juvenile wild sea otters, and 26 wild sea otter pups. The median and inner 90 percentile range were determined for the adult, juvenile, and pup groups and for the following subgroups: adult male versus adult female, juvenile male versus juvenile female, pup male versus pup female, captured with dip net versus captured with Wilson trap, and tranquilized adults and juveniles versus non-tranquilized adults and juveniles. When values for adults were compared to values for juveniles and pups, hematocrits, red blood cell counts, and hemoglobin levels were significantly lower in pups. This is consistent with documented findings in other species. White cell counts were also somewhat lower in younger animals. Among the subgroups, significantly higher hemoglobin levels, white cell counts and neutrophil counts were found in adult females than in adult males. This is in direct contrast to what is seen in other mammalian species and warrants further documentation. Method of capture and tranquilization did not appear to influence either hematologic or serum biochemical determinations from a clinical perspective.  相似文献

Our objective was to examine whether mouse lines divergently selected for response to fescue toxicosis differed in the impact of increasing reproductive intensity on growth, final weight or first and second parity reproduction. Resistant (R) and susceptible (S) females were never mated (NR), mated only once (low reproduction, LR), mated after their first litter was weaned (moderate reproduction, MR) or paired continuously with a male (high reproduction, HR), allowing concurrent pregnancy and lactation. Final weight was significantly higher in mated than in not mated females (31.6 ± 0.6, 35.9 ± 0.6, 36.8 ± 0.6 and 37.2 ± 0.5 g for NR, LR, MR and HR females respectively), but the effect of increasing reproductive intensity was similar in both lines. Neither genetic line, reproductive treatment (LR and MR versus HR) nor their interaction affected first parity traits of dams or pups. In second parity, S dams produced larger litters at birth and weaning and heavier litters at birth than R dams, and MR dams produced more pups and heavier litters than HR dams. As with first litters, however, line by reproductive treatment interactions were not significant or important. Concurrent pregnancy and lactation (the HR treatment) had a similar dampening impact on the expected increase in litter size between first and second parity of both lines. Thus, lines divergently selected for toxicosis response did not differ significantly in the impact of increasing reproductive intensity on dam or pup growth, reproductive output through two parities or mature size. This conclusion should not be generalized. Selection responses in livestock should be monitored to ensure that improvement in one trait does not lead to deterioration in others.  相似文献

In 14 bitches, laparotomy was performed between the 45th day and 54th day of gestation. In total, 89 foetuses were marked individually by means of transuterine injections of a radiopaque substance. After expulsion, each pup was provided with a colour code. By radiographs one day after birth, all pups of a litter could be identified by the radiopaque markings. In this way the order and presentation at birth of each pup could be compared with the uterine position and presentation at laparotomy. When after expulsion of a pup, one or more were left in each uterine horn, the next pup was produced by the contralateral horn in 43 cases (78·2%) and by the ipsilateral horn in 12 cases (21·8%). One horn was never observed to be completely empty before the other horn started expelling pups. In six of eight bitches in which each two uterine horns did not contain an equal number of foetuses, the first pup was born from the horn containing most pups. The presentation at birth has been observed in 73 pups. For five of these (6·9%), the presentation differed from the one observed at laparotomy; in all five cases the original posterior presentation had changed into an anterior one.  相似文献

234 female fattening rabbits with slaughtering on day 84 of age (6 rounds) and 62 does (11 rounds) kept under three light regimes: a) natural light (NL) with an intensity of 27 Lux on average, b) artificial light (AL 8) with 8 hours light a day and c) artificial light (AL 16) with 16 hours light a day (both AL with a mean light intensity of 60 Lux) were included in investigations. Weight of ovaries and uteri was measured and percentage of females with follicular development (follicles with diameter of > 1 mm, Corpora lutea, Corpora hemorrhagica) was verified after slaughter in fattening rabbits. Data of fertility (rate of conception, litter size and litter weight at birth and at weaning) were recorded in does to calculate on this basis pup index. Weight of ovaries was not influenced by light regime. Female rabbits kept under AL 8 had significantly lowest mean weight of uterus and lowest percentage of animals with follicular development (39.7% compared with 53.1% in AL 16 and 56.3% in NL). Against this, highest rate of conception (69.3%) and highest pup index alive born and weaned pups (593, 547 pups per 100 inseminated does resp.) were found in does kept under AL 8. Corresponding values were 65.9% rate of conception, 565 alive born and 539 weaned pups/100 does in AL 16 and 65.7%, 524, 505 pups resp. in NL.  相似文献

Ansell’s mole-rat, Fukomys anselli, is a cooperatively breeding bathyergid endemic to the Lusaka Province of Zambia. During a 12-month field study involving the capture of 33 colonies of mole-rats, the number of occupants, breeding females and sex ratio within colonies were recorded. While thirty of these social groups contained a single breeding queen, three were found to exhibit plural breeding among females, having two queens present simultaneously. Mean±S.E.M. colony size was 8.7±2.2 (range 6–16,n=33). The occurrence of plural breeding and small group size is consistent with the predictions of the aridity food distribution hypothesis for social species inhabiting mesic habitats. The sex ratio of the population was skewed towards females at 1.2:1. The mean mass of adult males was 63.0 ± 18.3 g (range 36.7–110.3, n=87) while that for adult females was 52.9±11.8 g (range 35.1–77.8, n=86). Pregnant and lactating females were found throughout the study period from February 2009 to February 2010, indicating an aseasonal pattern of breeding in this species. Autopsy of individuals (n=288) from the 33 colonies revealed a total of 19 pregnant females. Nine of these were in the latter stages of pregnancy and mean litter size was determined as 2.7 pups (range 1–4). Collectively, these new data reveal that Fukomys anselli share many similarities in life history and reproductive traits with the phylogentically closely related giant Zambian mole-rat, Fukomys mechowii.  相似文献

A healthy population of captive Amur tigers might assist recovery of the wild population in Northeast China if individuals were properly prepared and considered suitable for release in the wild. We analyzed the breeding records of 68 female Amur tigers from 1995 to 2010 in the Hengdaohezi Felid Breeding Center of China and compared the reproductive parameters of this population to wild female Amur tigers. We found that the reproductive parameters of the captive population (the age of first parturition, length of gestation and litter survival rate) were not significantly different from those of wild Amur tigers. Differences in birth date and litter size between wild and captive populations may be caused by management protocols for the captive population or insufficient field data from the wild population. Reproductive parameters of females giving birth after losing a litter were similar to parameters of females that did not lose a litter, except for birth date. These results provide no indication of major problems in using captive females for a breeding program for release of cubs into the wild, but additional information is still needed to assess their suitability.  相似文献

It has been shown previously that supplementation of sows with l-carnitine increases their reproduction performance. The current study was carried out to investigate if feeding of l-carnitine also affects the reproduction performance of rats. Thirty female rats at 4 weeks of age were divided into two groups. The rats were fed diets with or without l-carnitine (1 g/kg diet) over a period of 34 weeks. After 8 weeks of feeding, the female rats were mated the first time. Two more reproductive cycles followed, with 3-week intervals in between. Body weight development of the females was similar in both groups during the whole experimental period. Number of pregnancies and number of total rat pups, pups born alive and stillborn pups were not influenced by l-carnitine. There was also no influence of dietary l-carnitine on the body weight of individual pups and the litter weights at birth. Weight development of litters differed between both groups on several days, but no uniform effect of l-carnitine was observed. Body weight development of weaned rats fed a commercial diet was different between both groups, but only in one reproduction cycle. In conclusion, this study shows that l-carnitine supplementation does not improve the reproductive performance of rats.  相似文献

Babesia canis infection was diagnosed in a litter of seven 3-week-old Mastiff pups kept in a north Florida kennel. The pups were evaluated because of poor weight gain; the smallest pup also was markedly lethargic. Six of the pups were anemic and thrombocytopenic. A positive linear correlation between PCV and absolute reticulocyte count suggested that the variation in PCV may have been related more to the ability of a pup to increase erythrocyte production than to a difference in magnitude of erythrocyte destruction. All pups recovered from clinical signs and hematologic abnormalities attributable to babesiosis within 2.5 weeks after treatment with diminazene aceturate. Transient neurologic signs observed in 1 pup 3 days after treatment were believed to represent an adverse drug reaction. The dam of the litter had a serum titer of 1:640 for B canis, but appeared healthy, as did approximately 30 other adult dog in the kennel. The strain of B canis infecting dogs in the kennel caused severe illness and death in some pups, but clinically inapparent disease in adult dogs.  相似文献

Mouse populations differing in metabolic rate have been developed through selection for high (MH) and low (ML) heat loss, along with the unselected controls (MC). Objectives of the study were to compare the MH, ML, and MC lines for reproductive performance, pup survival, and metabolic hormones when reared at 12, 22, and 31 degrees C, and to search for line x environment interactions. Conception and litter size were recorded on the parent generation mice introduced to the environments at 11 wk of age and bred after a 3-wk acclimatization period. Survival of pups (preweaning to 3 wk; postweaning from 3 to 9 wk of age) was measured with continuous exposure in the designated environment from birth to the time of measurement. Corticosterone, triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroxine (T4) serum concentrations were measured on the parent generation after producing litters and on the pup generation at 9 wk. No line x environment interaction was detected for conception rate, preweaning mortality, postweaning survival, pup weaning weight, or body temperature. There were no differences in conception rate among lines and environments. Environments affected survival of pups, but there were no line differences. Rectal body temperatures were greater for MH than ML mice, and MC mice were intermediate; body temperature of mice did not differ among the environments. Lines differed significantly in litter size only in the 22 degrees C environment. No significant line differences were found for serum corticosterone or serum T3 or T4. Line x environment interaction was detected only for litter size and for serum corticosterone concentration in dams. Contrary to the other two lines, ML dam performance relative to MH and MC was not affected negatively by either of the thermal environments. Results from this study do not raise concern that selection to decrease maintenance requirements will produce livestock with any greater liability to cope and perform under an array of environmental temperatures.  相似文献

Abstract

The data on breeding and performance records (3830) of 1134 Lohi ewes kept at an Institutional Livestock Experiment Station, Okara in Punjab province during the period from 1972 through 2001 were used to study the influence of some non-genetic factors such as year and season of birth/lambing, age and weight at first service sex of lamb born, birth type, age of dam on various reproductive traits. The age of ewes at first service averaged 615.6±8.2 days and was not significantly affected by the year and season of birth of the ewes. The ewes born during spring season had comparatively low (613.6±7.9 days) age at first service than autumn born (617.5±9.8 days). The type of birth did not significantly influence age at first service. The least squares mean for the weight at first service was 42.10±0.24 kg and was significantly (P<0.01) influenced by the ewe's year and season of birth. The spring-born ewes were heavier (42.3±0.3 kg) at first service than autumn-born ewes (41.9±0.3 kg). The weight at first service was also significantly affected by the age at first service. The type of birth did not significantly influence weight at first service. The number of services per conception averaged 1.29±0.03 and varied significantly (P<0.01) between seasons. The number of services per conception was higher (1.37±0.02) in ewes bred during autumn than those bred in spring (1.16±0.06). The effects of years and weight at service on the number of services per conception were non-significant. The number of services per conception significantly increased with advancing age. Mean gestation period was 152.31±0.08 days and it was significantly affected by the years and seasons of lambing and the age of the ewe at lambing. However, gestation length was not significantly affected due to birth type and sex of the lamb born.  相似文献

Congenital central diabetes insipidus was determined to be the cause of polydipsia and polyuria in sibling pups. Both pups were lacking adequate plasma arginine vasopressin concentration, compared with that in control dogs. Microscopic abnormalities were confined to the brain and pituitary gland in one pup. Without breeding trials of these dogs or their relatives, it cannot be determined whether the cause was familial.  相似文献

Ivermectin had no adverse effects on spermatogenesis, fertility, or reproductive performance of Beagle dogs when administered orally at 600 micrograms/kg (0.6 mg/kg) of body weight monthly for 8 treatments. Semen was collected every 3 days from 28 days before treatment began until 83 days thereafter from 6 ivermectin-treated Beagles and 6 similar water-treated controls (38 collections/dog). All dogs were then bred to 2 nontreated bitches each; litter size, birth weights, and pup abnormalities and mortalities were evaluated. After all pups were whelped, each dog was euthanatized and necropsied, and the testis and epididymis were examined microscopically.  相似文献

The oriental white stork (Ciconia boyciana) is a threatened species, and their numbers are still in decline due to habitat loss and poaching. China is a breeding and main wintering area for this animal and in recent years some individuals have been found breeding in wintering areas and at some stopover sites. These new breeding colonies are an exciting sign, however, little is understood of the genetic structure of this species. Based on the analysis of a 463‐bp mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region, we investigated the genetic structure and genetic diversity of 66 wild oriental white storks from a Chinese population. We analyzed the sequences of 66 storks obtained in this study and the data of 17 storks from a Japanese population. Thirty‐seven different haplotypes were detected among the 83 samples. An analysis of molecular variance showed a significant population subdivision between the two populations (FST= 0.316, P < 0.05). However, the phylogenetic analysis revealed that the samples from the different populations did not form separate clusters and that there were genetic exchanges between the two populations. Compared with the Japanese population, the Chinese population had a relatively higher genetic diversity with a haplotype diversity (hπ SD) of 0.953 ± 0.013 and a nucleotide diversity (π± SD) of 0.013 ± 0.007. The high haplotype diversity and low nucleotide diversity indicate that this population might be in a rapidly increasing period from a small effective population. A neighbor‐joining tree analysis indicated that genetic exchange had occurred between the newly arisen southern breeding colony and the northern breeding colony wintering in the middle and lower Yangtze River floodplain. These results have important implications for the conservation of the oriental white stork population in China.  相似文献

A prevalence survey for hookworms (Uncinaria spp.) was done in northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) and California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) pups on San Miguel Island, CA, in 2000. Intestines of dead pups were examined for adult hookworms in July. These parasites were found in 95% of 20 fur seal pups and 100% of 31 sea lion pups. The number of hookworms varied from 4 to 2142 (mean = 760) in fur seal pups and from 20 to 2634 (mean = 612) in sea lion pups. A direct relationship was evident between body condition and number of hookworms in the pups; that is, pups in poor condition had fewer hookworms than those in good condition. There was a decline in the number of hookworms in sea lion pups in 2000 compared to collections in 1996. Eggs of Uncinaria spp. were found in rectal feces (collected in late September and early October) of none of 35 (0%) live fur seal pups and 41 of 48 (85%) live sea lion pups. Packed cell volume values, determined for most of the same live pups, were essentially normal for C. ursinus but were much lower than normal for most Z. californianus. Hookworm larvae were not found in blubber of fur seal and sea lion pups or in rookery sand in July. Rookery sand, positive for live hookworm larvae when put in a refrigerator, was negative at removal 2.5 years later. The average number of eggs in utero of female hookworms was 285 for three specimens from a fur seal pup and 281 from three specimens from a sea lion pup. One hookworm larva was recovered from milk stripped from the teats of a stranded Z. californianus female at The Marine Mammal Center, Sausalito, CA.  相似文献

Females of the inbred mouse RR strain have a limited ability to nurture their offspring, and frequently the young die during rearing. We previously identified a significant quantitative trait locus (QTL) responsible for the inferior nurturing ability on chromosome 5 (Naq1), on the basis of litter weight of six pups at days 7, 12, and 21 after parturition. Here, we carried out further mapping of Naq1 to define the confidence interval precisely. At the same time, we analyzed new quantitative trait variables, litter weight gain between days 7 and 12 (WG1), and that between days 12 and 21 (WG2), to characterize further the physiology of inferior nurturing ability. Consequently, a peak LOD score for the Naq1 was identified on D5Mit218 (72 cM), which was located approximately 2 cM distal to our previous expectation, as a significant QTL for WG1 (LOD 5.5), but not for WG2 (LOD 0.9). Because the growth of pups depends purely on milk obtained from the dam up to day 12 after birth, it seems possible to assume that the inferior nurturing ability in RR mice is related to defects in maternal nutritional support (that is, lactation) rather than to defects in pup growth. Naq1 is a novel QTL as far as the QTL results of relevant female reproductive traits in cattle and pigs are concerned.  相似文献

The onset of puberty was assessed from plasma progesterone profiles for Mouflon (n = 8) and Manchega (n = 7) female lambs born in April. Four Mouflons exhibited their first ovulation at a mean date of 27 November ± 1.4 days, the mean age being 248.5 ± 3.9 days and the mean body weight 23.8 ± 0.6 kg. The remaining four Mouflons, which had a slower growth rate, attained puberty during the autumn of the following year. Five of seven Manchega lambs attained puberty in their first year at a mean date of 5 Oct ± 3.3, the mean age being 185.6 ± 2.6 days and the mean body weight 41.8 ± 2.0 kg. The mean live‐weight at the onset of puberty was 65.1 and 82% (p < 0.05) of adult body weights for Manchega and Mouflons, respectively. Overall, the results indicate that there is a threshold of body‐weight necessary for the attainment of puberty in the first breeding season for spring‐born lambs, which is very different between both Mouflon and Manchega. When body weight was below 23.8 ±0.6 and 41.8 ± 2.0 kg for Mouflon and Manchega lambs, respectively, first ovulation did not occur until the beginning of the next breeding season. The onset of puberty during the second year of life occurred within the specific reproductive seasons for Mouflon (October–April) and Manchega (July–March) ewes, despite minimal further growth.  相似文献

Background

Despite being the most commonly used mammal in biomedical research, problems with perinatal mortality in mice have received little attention and the causes of pup death are still poorly known. Females are often housed alone with their litters and since the lost pups are generally eaten, it is commonly assumed that the mother has killed them. However, more detailed observations than have been reported previously in the literature are required to establish if the cause of death is infanticide. Litter loss can only be prevented efficiently after underlying causes have been carefully investigated and interpreted. The aim of this study was to investigate if females actively kill their pups by observing the behaviour of females and pups in litters that later were lost. We used video recordings of females that lost their entire litter to observe females in detail from parturition until the pups died. In total, 10 C57BL/6 females (wildtype and the knockouts Hfe−/− and β2m−/−) were studied, housed in Makrolon II cages with or without access to a small amount of nesting material.

Results

Three of the females had pups that were never seen moving, and another three females had one or two pups that never moved, indicating that some pups were most likely still-born. In five females with live-born pups, detailed observations from the time when a pup was last seen moving until it died were possible to carry out. We observed females eating dead offspring and interacting with both moving and dead pups. However, we never observed a pup stop moving when manipulated by the female, nor were any wounds seen in the pups. Hence, we found no evidence of infanticide when studying females that had lost their entire litter.

Conclusion

These results suggest that other causes than infanticide plays a major role in mouse pup death, and stress the need for more systematic and careful investigations of the causality of litter loss.  相似文献
