Critical loads for sulphur and nitrogen are defined to produce effective control strategies over Europe, such as those of the new sulphur protocol. To determine the critical load exceedances on the European scale it is necessary to simplify and generalize. The spatial variation on a scale smaller than the 150 × 150 km EMEP grid squares is considered for critical loads, via a cumulative frequency distribution and the 95 percentile for the grid square is determined. The deposition is assumed to be uniform over the area and the exceedance over the 95 percentile critical load is determined. In reality, the spatial variation is considerable for critical loads as well as for deposition. Calculations based on the frequency of local critical load exceedances have been made for two grid squares in southern Sweden. Local critical loads for acidity are compared to local deposition. Deposition variations due to pollution gradients within the square and to ecosystem structure have been considered. The results are similar for the two squares. The calculations based on local exceedances on 50×50 km grid squares and consideration to landuse variability, indicate that in order to protect 95% of the ecosystems in the square, emission reductions 25% greater than the large-scale European approach are needed. The effect of enhanced deposition at forest edges is of relatively small importance for the total exceedance.  相似文献

The effects of input data uncertainty on the critical loads andexceedance estimates for Swedish forest soils was assessed usingMonte Carlo simulations of the PROFILE model. The study focuseson the effects of data uncertainty on the 5%-ile critical loadat 150 × 150 km resolution and the 95%-ile exceedance at150 × 150 km and 50 × 50 km resolution.The results indicate that datauncertainty limits the possibility to differentiate grid cellson 150 × 150 km resolution. The confidence interval for agiven percentile can generally be reduced if the uncertaintiesin calculated critical loads are addressed simultaneously forall sites in a grid cell. The resulting best estimates of the5%-ile critical load were found to be lowered, therebyadvocating larger deposition reductions to comply with a givengap closure of exceedance. The results further indicate that thenumber of sites within the grid cells is important for the rangeof the confidence interval for a given percentile.Re-aggregation of exceedance estimate in 50 × 50 km gridcells showed that differentiation may be improved as compared to150 × 150 km resolution. For 70% of the grid cells on 50× 50 km resolution, the confidence interval forcalculated exceedance covers both negative and positive values.  相似文献

基于太湖地区1∶50 000、1∶1 000 000、1∶14 000 000三种比例尺土壤矢量图斑单元以及通过上述矢量图斑单元转换生成的不同分辨率的栅格单元,在1982年水稻土土壤有机碳库的基础上,利用DNDC(Denitrification-Decomposition)模型模拟了2000年水稻土表层(0~20 cm)土壤有机碳库,对比分析了不同分辨率栅格单元与3种比例尺矢量图斑单元的水稻土类型数量、面积、表层土壤有机碳储量以及有机碳密度的变化特征,并以矢量图斑单元获得的这4个指标结果为基准,用相对变异百分数(VIV)来判别基于三种比例尺DNDC模型模拟的最佳栅格单元分辨率。结果表明,在4个指标的│VIV│1%前提下,基于1∶50 000、1∶1 000 000、1∶14 000 000三种比例尺的最佳栅格模拟单元分辨率分别为0.2 km×0.2 km、2 km×2 km、17 km×17 km,既能保证模型模拟过程中的精度要求,又可以避免数据冗余,提高模拟效率。建立的土壤碳库模拟研究的比例尺与其最佳栅格单元分辨率对应转换关系,对区域土壤碳模拟研究具有重要参考价值。  相似文献

Countries that will ratify the new Protocol to abate acidification, eutrophication and ground-level ozone, also known as the Göteborg-protocol, are committed to meet national emission ceilings for SO2, NOx, VOCs and NH3 in 2010. AEA Technology calculated impacts and monetised benefits for four scenarios used during the preparation of the new Protocol, each scenario compared with the situation 1990. The calculated benefits were compared with the costs calculated by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) using the RAINS model. The overall conclusion is that the benefits are likely to exceed the costs of implementing the scenarios considered in the study, by a factor of between two and three. Based on the principal set of assumptions followed in the study, it appeared that impacts on haity and materials were negligible. Impacts on ecosystems remained unquantified.  相似文献

A variant of the European modelSimple Mass Balance (SMB) and the regionalizedPROFILE model have been used to calculate critical loads of acidity for Swiss forest soils. The single layer SMB has been applied to 11,800 receptor points and the multi-layer PROFILE to 720 forest sites. Weathering rates used in SMB calculations were assessed by means of a modified de Vries soil classification, and calculated from physical properties of the soil system with PROFILE.Cumulative frequency distributions of the results at the national resolution show that PROFILE predicts lower critical loads. Up to the 65-percentile critical load PROFILE percentile values are average 65% of the SMB percentile values. The upper percentiles of the PROFILE critical loads are merely 25% of the respective SMB predictions.  相似文献

Three well-known dynamic acidification models (MAGIC, SAFE, SMART) were applied to data sets from five Integrated Monitoring sites in Europe. The calibrated models were used in a policy-oriented framework to predict the long-term soil acidification of these background forest sites, given different scenarios of future deposition of S and N. Emphasis was put on deriving realistic site-specific scenarios for the model applications. The deposition was calculated with EMEP transfer matrices and official emissions for the target years 2000, 2005 and 2010. The alternatives for S deposition were current reduction plans and maximum feasible reductions. For N, the NOx and NHy depositions were frozen at the present level. For NOx, a reduction scenario of flat 30% reduction from present deposition also was utilized to demonstrate the possible effects of such a measure. The three models yielded generally consistent results. The ‘Best prediction’-scenario (including the effects of the second UN/ECE protocol for reductions of SO2 emissions and present level for NOx-emissions), resulted in many cases in a stabilization of soil acidification, although significant improvements were not always shown. With the exception of one site, the ‘Maximum Feasible Reductions’ scenario always resulted in significant improvements. Dynamic models are needed as a complement to steady-state techniques for estimating critical loads and assessing emission reduction policies, where adequate data are available.  相似文献

Simultaneous soil acidification and deposition of heavy metals is a major concern for forest and agricultural soils of the Black Triangle region of East Central Europe including southern former East Germany, northern Bohemia of the Czech Republic, and southern Poland. The objective of this project was to develop historical and future projections of acid and heavy metal deposition to soils (As, Cd, Pb, Zn) and to produce a preliminary map of soil sensitivity to cadmium pollution and uptake by crops. Ultimately, we wish to assess the relative hazard and recovery times of soils to metals deposition in the region. Emission and deposition data bases obtained from several models developed at IIASA were linked using the Geographical Information System ARC/INFO to produce soil maps of sensitivity to cadmium mobility based on metals deposition, soil type, soil texture, organic matter content, and acid deposition. RAINS 6.1 (Alcamo et al., 1990) was utilized to produce maps of acid deposition for EMEP grids (150 km x 150 km). The largest amount of acid load is deposited in southern East Germany. Sulfur deposition in that area was 10–12 gS/m2/yr in 1990, and S+N deposition exceeded 8000 eq/ha/yr. But the hot spot for metals deposition is further to the east, in the Silesia area of southern Poland. The TRACE2 trajectory model of Alcamo, Bartnicki, and Olendrzynski (1992) was used to estimate cumulative metals deposition since 1955 with scenarios to 2010. Pb has improved over Europe since 1970 when depositions in the Ruhr River Valley of West Germany exceeded 60 mg/m2/yr. But cadmium deposition in southern Poland (Katowice and Krakow) has now accumulated to 60–70 mg/m2 by atmospheric deposition alone. During base case simulations from 1955–87, approximately 1.8 mg/kg Pb and 0.12 mg/kg Cd have been added to the mixed plow-layer of 30 cm. If these emissions continue indefinitely, the accumulation of metals will become problematic for agriculture and the food chain.  相似文献

Critical loads are used in international negotiations to reduce acid deposition resulting from emissions of sulphur and nitrogen compounds within Europe. For freshwater ecosystems, the First-order Acidity Balance (FAB) model is used to generate national maps of critical loads and exceedances for both sulphur (S) and nitrogen (N). In Wales, two survey datasets have been used to calculate critical loads and exceedances; one based on water bodies selected to be "most-sensitive" to acidification within a 10 km grid and the other based on a random selection of standing waters. Both datasets indicate that critical loads were exceeded in 1990 in a significant proportion of Welsh lakes and streams; 36% of sites in the grid-based survey and 31% of sites in the random survey. However, implementation of the Gothenburg Protocol would protect all but 6% of sites in the grid-based survey and all sites in the random survey. Assessment of the relative success of the Gothenburg Protocol in protecting Welsh freshwater ecosystems therefore depends on the site selection strategy employed.  相似文献

Critical loads have been used in the revision of the Sulphur Protocol of the Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE). Critical loads, i.e. maximum allowable depositions which do not increase the probability of damage to forest soils and surface waters, have been computed and mapped for Europe by means of the Steady-state Mass Balance Method, using national data and, if national data were unavailable, using a European database. Results show that areas with low critical loads are located mostly in northern and central Europe. The reduction of the excess of sulfur (S) deposition over critical loads was a starting point for negotiations leading to the Oslo Protocol on Further Reduction of Sulphur Emissions (the “Second Sulphur Protocol”). The new protocol protects about 81%, 86% and 90% of the ecosystems' area in 2000, 2005 and 2010, respectively. In addition, the total European area in which sulphur deposition exceeds critical loads by more than 500 eq ha?1 yr?1 will be reduced from about 19% in 1980 to practically zero in 2010. Besides these results, a methodology is presented which allows the combined assessment of the acidifying effects of S and N as well as the eutrophying effects of N deposition on ecosystems (so-called critical load functions and the protection isolines derived from them). This methodology is well suited to integrate ecosystem sensitivities into future negotiations on the reductions of nitrogen (N) compounds, taking into account present or anticipated S emissions.  相似文献

The maximum critical load of sulfur and its exceedance by the sulfur deposition of 1994–1997 were mapped for South Korea with a spatial resolution of 11 × 14 km using the steady-state mass balance method. The Korean soil and geological maps were used as basis for the estimations of the critical alkalinity leaching and the weathering rate of base cations. The normalized difference vegetation index data obtained from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) together with the observed primary productivity of plants were used for the estimation of the critical uptake of base cations. Wet deposition of the non-sea-salt base cations was derived from measured base cation concentrations in precipitation, precipitation rate and air concentration of total suspended particulate while dry deposition of base cations was estimated using the inferential technique using scavenging ratios. The predominant ranges of base cation weathering, uptake and deposition were estimated to be of 200 – 600 eq ha?1 yr?1, 200 – 400 eq ha?1 yr?1 and 400 – 600 eq ha?1 yr?1, respectively. Critical alkalinity leaching was mainly in the range of 1000 – 2000 eq ha?1 yr?1 due to relatively high value of precipitation runoff. Exceedance of sulfur critical load was found at 40 % of the ecosystems considered mainly in the southeastern part of Korea, and about 60 % of Korea ecosystems were sustainable against sulfur acidity loadings.  相似文献

In the UK the "critical loads" approach has been used to derive maps based on the 10km × 10km national grid. However, this grid based approach is inappropriate for catchment scale management and these maps cannot be used for "stock at risk" assessments of the number of water bodies or lengths of streams in a given area that may be vulnerable to acidification. Critical loads are determined across two large river catchments in England (The Duddon) and Wales (The Glaslyn). High resolution, digital datasets are used to characterise the attributes of each subcatchment in terms of land cover, soil, geology, topography and topology. Empirical models used to examine the relationship between these attributes and critical loads indicate that the former can be used to account for significant variation in the latter. However, these relationships can vary from catchment to catchment. Thus, although this approach provides the potential for identifying sensitive surface waters on a catchment wide basis, it is likely that models will need to be parameterised on a catchment specific basis.  相似文献

The results of mapping critical loads, areas where they have been exceeded and steady state (Ca+Mg+K)/Al ratios of soils in Sweden, has been used to assess the order of magnitude of the ecological and economic risks involved with acid deposition for Swedish forests. The results of the calculations indicate that 81% of the Swedish forested area receive acid deposition in excess of the critical load at present. Under continued deposition at 1990 level, forest die-back is predicted to occur on approximately 1% of the forested area, and significant growth rate reductions are predicted for 80% of the Swedish forested area. For Sweden, growth losses in the order of 17.5 million m?3 yr?1 is predicted, equivalent to approximately 19% of current growth. Comparable losses can be predicted for other Nordic countries. The soil acidification situation is predicted to deteriorate significantly during the next 5–15 years, unless rapid emission reductions can be achieved. A minimum deposition reduction over Sweden of 85% on sulphur deposition and 30% on the N deposition in relation to 1990 level is required in order to protect 95% of the Swedish forest ecosystems from adverse effects of acidification. A minimum reduction of 60% on sulphur deposition and 30% on the N deposition is required to keep forest harvest at planned levels.  相似文献

Integrated Assessment Models were successfully used to provide input to the negotiations for the Oslo Protocol on Further Reductions of Sulphur Emissions, finalized within the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution in Oslo in June 1994. The techniques developed within this framework will be extended now to the simultaneous analysis of sulphur and nitrogen deposition. In addition to acidification, atmospheric deposition of nitrogen contributes to eutrophication of certain ecosystems, through a nutrient effect, and originates from the long-range transport of emissions of both oxidised and reduced nitrogen (NOx and NH3). Modelling reductions in nitrogen deposition thus introduces a need to establish multi-pollutant multi-effect modelling techniques. This paper investigates the development of a model set up to examine reductions of these pollutants in an economically and environmentally efficient manner. The control of nitrogen deposition encompasses action across several economic sectors, particularly the power, transport and agricultural sectors. Combining sulphur and nitrogen deposition limits on a European scale will require a flexible modelling approach and the issues governing possible approaches are presented.  相似文献

Fine spatial-scale measurements of acidic deposition have been made over two time frames: 1987/1988 and 1999/2000. Over this period, dramatic reductions in precursor emissions have occurred. The two sets of data are compared in order to quantify deposition reductions. Orographic enhancement of wet deposition from the seeder-feeder mechanism is important in the UK at high-elevation sites such as these and the measurements were corrected for this process using a standard methodology. The data were also modelled using a simple long-term Lagrangian acid deposition model and comparisons made with both sets of observations at a resolution of 5 km_5 km. Future scenarios (2010) of emissions were modelled to examine the impact of UK and other European sources in order to determine optimal protection of ecosystems in this region.  相似文献

Input of large amounts of N and S compounds into forest ecosystems through atmospheric deposition is a significant risk for soil acidification in the oil sands region of Alberta. We evaluated the sensitivity of forest soils to acidification in two watersheds (Lake 287 and Lake 185) with contrasting hydrological regimes as a part of a larger project assessing the role of N and S cycling in soil acidification in forest ecosystems. Fifty six forest soil samples were collected from the two watersheds by horizon from 10 monitoring plots dominated by either jack pine (Pinus banksiana) or aspen (Populus tremuloides). Soils in the two watersheds were extremely to moderately acidic with pH (CaCl2) ranging from 2.83 to 4.91. Soil acid-base chemistry variables such as pH, base saturation, Al saturation, and acid-buffering capacity measured using the acetic acid equilibrium procedure indicated that soils in Lake 287 were more acidified than those in Lake 185. Acid-buffering capacity decreased in the order of forest floor 〉 subsurface mineral soil 〉 surface mineral soil. The most dramatic differences in percent Ca and Al saturations between the two watersheds were found in the surface mineral soil horizon. Percent Ca and Al saturation in the surface mineral soil in Lake 287 were 15% and 70%, respectively; the percent Ca saturation value fell within a critical range proposed in the literature that indicates soil acidification. Our results suggest that the soils in the two watersheds have low acid buffering capacity and would be sensitive to increased acidic deposition in the region.  相似文献

Critical acid loads for Dutch forests were derived using a multi-layer steady-state model that includes canopy interactions, nutrient cycling, mineral weathering and N transformations. Values were calculated for combinations of 12 tree species and 23 soil types for a 10×10 km grid. Critical acid loads thus derived increased with decreasing soil depth. Nearly 90% of the values varied approximately between 1500 and 4000 molc ha?1 yr?1 at 10 cm soil depth and between 750 and 2000 molc ha?1 yr?1 at the bottom of the rootzone. Separate critical loads calculated for N and S at the bottom of the rootzone varied between approximately 300 and 1000 molc ha?1 yr?1 for N and between 150 and 1250 molc ha?1 yr?1 for S. Using deposition data of 1990, a median reduction of the deposition by approximately 75% was calculated to achieve the critical loads at the bottom of the rootzone. The overall uncertainty in this value was estimated to be about 10%, although it can be much larger for specific soil types such as clay and peat soils. For N a larger reduction deposition percentage was calculated than for S, especially for coniferous forests with a high present N input.  相似文献

Rates of deposition, of soil internal production and of turnover of protons in two forest ecosystems The rates of deposition, of turnover and of soil internal production of protons are calculated from the flux balance of chemical elements within two forest ecosystems (Dystic Cambisols from loess/sandstone with beech or spruce). The rates of interception deposition vary significantly throughout the season and determine the rates of total deposition to a large extent. The comparison of the actual rates of proton load with the buffer rates possible in the soils leads to the conclusion that soil acidification up to the level of the Al-buffer range is unavoidable in most forest soils in Middle Europe. The behaviour of the incoming S in the soil is related to the dissolution and precipitation of Al-hydroxo-sulfate. The accumulation of S within the soil of the spruce stand was found to be reversible and was followed by a phase of strong leaching of S and Al from the soil. The processes that account for the rates of soil internal proton-net-production are quantified. More than 70% of the total proton load results from the deposition of air pollutants while only less than 30% is of soil internal origin.  相似文献

The literature on the fluxes of six heavy metals in temperate forest ecosystems is reviewed. Special attention is given to wet and dry deposition and internal flux, to metal budgets for ecosystems and soils, to concentrations in aqueous compartments of the ecosystem and to speciation in soil solutions. Metal fluxes are discussed in relation to pollution load, soil type, tree species and land use. The mobility of Cu and Pb is strongly dependent on the solubility of organic matter. These metals are commonly accumulated in forest soils. Zinc, Cd and Ni are greatly influenced by soil acidity and are often lost in considerable amounts from acidified soils. Chromium is often at balance in forest ecosystems. Implications for metal solubility and budgets in forest soils are discussed in connection with an increase in soil acidification.  相似文献

The effects of acidic deposition on soil ecosystems under temperate coniferous forest in the Chongqing region of China were investigated from 1993 to 1994. Precipitation, throughfall, stemflow, soil solutions, and soil samples were collected to estimate the acidification of soil ecosystems through the changes of their chemical components. The concentrations of ion species in the throughfall and stemflow under masson pine forest in Mt. Zhenwu were higher than those under mixed coniferous forest in Mt. Jinyun and under camphor tree forest in Laojundong, suggesting that Mt. Zhenwu is located in the vicinity of the Chongqing center and that it allowed the canopy of masson pine to intercept air pollutants. However, the level of aluminum dissolution into soil solutions was relatively low under masson pine forest in Mt. Zhenwu in spite of the low pH in the stemflow.  相似文献
