In Vertisols of central India erratic rainfall and prevalence of drought during crop growth, low infiltration rates and the consequent ponding of water at the surface during the critical growth stages are suggested as possible reasons responsible for poor yields (<1 t ha−1) of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). Ameliorative tillage practices particularly deep tillage (subsoiling with chisel plough) can improve the water storage of soil by facilitating infiltration, which may help in minimizing water stress in this type of soil. In a 3-year field experiment (2000–2002) carried out in a Vertisol during wet seasons at Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India, we determined infiltration rate, root length and mass densities, water use efficiency and productivity of rainfed soybean under three tillage treatments consisting of conventional tillage (two tillage by sweep cultivator for topsoil tillage) (S1), conventional tillage + subsoiling in alternate years using chisel plough (S2), and conventional tillage + subsoiling in every year (S3) as main plot. The subplot consisted of three nutrient treatments, viz., 0% NPK (N0), 100% NPK (N1) and 100% NPK + farmyard manure (FYM) at 4 t ha−1 (N2). S3 registered a significantly lower soil penetration resistance by 22%, 28% and 20%, respectively, at the 17.5, 24.5 and 31.5 cm depths over S1 and the corresponding decrease over S2 were 17%, 19% and 13%, respectively. Bulk density after 15 days of tillage operation was significantly low in subsurface (15–30 cm depth) in S3 (1.39 mg m−3) followed by S2 (1.41 mg m−3) and S1 (1.58 mg m−3). Root length density (RLD) and root mass density (RMD) of soybean at 0–15 cm soil depth were greater following subsoiling in every year. S3 recorded significantly greater RLD (1.04 cm cm−3) over S2 (0.92 cm cm−3) and S1 (0.65 cm cm−3) at 15–30 cm depth under this study. The basic infiltration rate was greater after subsoiling in every year (5.65 cm h−1) in relation to conventional tillage (1.84 cm h−1). Similar trend was also observed in water storage characteristics (0–90 cm depth) of the soil profile. The faster infiltration rate and water storage of the profile facilitated higher grain yield and enhanced water use efficiency for soybean under subsoiling than conventional tillage. S3 registered significantly higher water use efficiency (17 kg ha−1 cm−1) over S2 (16 kg ha−1 cm−1) and S1 (14 kg ha−1 cm−1). On an average subsoiling recorded 20% higher grain yield of soybean over conventional tillage but the yield did not vary significantly due to S3 and S2. Combined application of 100% NPK and 4 t farmyard manure (FYM) ha−1 in N2 resulted in a larger RLD, RMD, grain yield and water use efficiency than N1 or the control (N0). N2 registered significantly higher yield of soybean (1517 kg ha−1) over purely inorganic (N1) (1392 kg ha−1) and control (N0) (898 kg ha−1). The study indicated that in Vertisols, enhanced productivity of soybean can be achieved by subsoiling in alternate years and integrated with the use of 100% NPK (30 kg N, 26 kg P and 25 kg K) and 4 t FYM ha−1.  相似文献

Crop residues and reduced tillage become current tendency in modifying tillage due to better water management, organic and nutrient supply and increasing crop production. This study was carried out to quantify the effect of fodder radish mulching and different tillage systems in wheat production. In 2004–2006 the field trial was set up on Luvic Chernozems derived from loess. This experiment consisted of two factors: tillage system (conventional or reduced) and mulch (with or without). The air–water properties of soil with particular focus on macropore characteristics were investigated. The tillage system and mulch application significantly influenced physical properties of investigated soil. Reduced tillage, without mouldboard plough, increased the soil density with respect to conventional tillage. However, in the upper soil layer (0–10 cm) with mulch residues the bulk density decreased and reached the similar value as those obtained at conventional tillage (1.25 g cm−3). The macroporosity of soil with conventional tillage (14.79%) was significantly higher in comparison with reduced tillage (6.55%). The mulch of fodder radish added at reduced tillage increased the macroporosity in pore diameter range of 50–500 μm. These changes referred to all shape classes: regular, irregular and elongated pores. The lowest transmission pores content (0.078 cm3 cm−3) was noticed at the reduced tillage without mulch at the 0–10 cm layer. Due to lack of differences in storage pores the tillage and mulching had no effect on both AWC (available water content) and PWC (productive water content) values. The higher value of AWC was noticed in the upper soil layer (0.198 cm3 cm−3 in average), whereas in the 10–20 cm soil layer it was 0.186 cm3 cm−3. Similar relation was recorded in PWC values, 0.165 and 0.154 cm3 cm−3, respectively. The results obtained in physical properties of soil reflected in wheat yields. The yields obtained at reduced tillage system without mulch (5.54 t ha−1) were significant lower with respect to treatment when mulch applied (6.79 t ha−1). The mulch residues did not affect yields at conventional tillage (6.53 t ha−1 without mulch and 7.00 t ha−1 with mulch). The main conclusion is that the mulching can help to avoid yield reduction in wheat production when reduced tillage is used.  相似文献

Soil water and nutrients play an important role in increasing sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) yields in the Vertisols of semi-arid tropics during post-rainy season. The effects of tillage practices, organic materials and nitrogen fertilizer on soil properties, water conservation and yield of sorghum were evaluated during winter seasons of 1994–1995 and 1995–1996 on deep Vertisols at Bijapur in the semi-arid tropics of Karnataka State (Zone 3) of south India. Conservation and availability of water and nutrients during different stages of crop growth were increased by deeper tillage resulting in increased grain yield of winter sorghum. Medium and deep tillage increased the grain yield by 23% (1509 kg ha−1) and 57% (1919 kg ha−1) during 1994–1995 and 14% (1562 kg ha−1) and 34% (1835 kg ha−1) during 1995–1996, respectively, over shallow tillage. Water use efficiency increased from shallow (4.90 kg ha−1 mm−1) to deep tillage (7.30 kg ha−1 mm−1). Greater water use efficiency during 1994–1995 as compared to 1995–1996 was attributed to lower consumptive use of water during 1994–1995. Among organic materials, application of Leucaena loppings conserved larger amounts of water and increased winter sorghum yield and water use efficiency. Application of Leucaena loppings increased the winter sorghum grain yield by 9% (mean of 1994–1995 and 1995–1996) as compared to vermicompost. Significantly (P < 0.05) higher water use efficiency of 6.32 kg ha−1 mm−1 was observed in Leucaena loppings incorporated plots compared to 5.72 kg ha−1 mm−1 from vermicompost. Grain yield increased by 245 kg ha−1 with application of 25 kg N ha−1 in 1994–1995, and a further increase in N application to 50 kg ha−1 increased the grain yield by about 349 kg ha−1 in 1995–1996. Deep tillage with application of 25 kg N ha−1 resulted in significantly higher sorghum yield (2047 kg ha−1) than control during 1994–1995. Deep tillage with integrated nutrient management (organic and inorganic N sources) conserved higher amount of soil water and resulted in increased sorghum yields especially during drought years.  相似文献

The productivity of upland rice in Japan as well as in the world is low and unstable owing to scarce and unpredictable rainfall. The objective of this study was to examine whether agronomic methods could enhance grain yield of upland rice. Four field experiments were conducted from 2001 to 2003 in Nishitokyo, Japan, under upland conditions with different water supplies, in order to quantify the effects of deep tillage combined with deep placement of manure (50-cm depth), straw mulch (6 t ha−1), or their combinations on the growth and grain yield of rice. Mulch kept surface soil moisture higher than without mulch even at reproductive stage, and it increased yield to the greatest extent under the most favourable conditions with much rainfall before heading (i.e., 2003). Deep tillage with deep placement of manure induced deep root proliferation and higher nitrogen uptake, increasing biomass production, and panicle number, and consequently grain yield was enhanced under the two lowest yielding environments with less rainfall before heading. Rice plants with deep tillage with deep manure application without mulch tended to have lower leaf water potential and higher diffusion resistance during drought, and negative effects on grain filling and harvest index in some experiments compared with the control. When deep tillage with deep placement of manure was combined with mulching in two experiments in 2002 and 2003, grain yield always enhanced compared with the control (P < 0.10, 6.0 t ha−1 versus 5.4 t ha−1 on average), suggesting their synergetic mechanisms for yield increase and stabilization. The results showed that deep tillage or mulching can improve grain yield of rice under drought-prone rainfed upland conditions in a temperate climate on an Andosol, and their combination had more consistent and greater positive effects.  相似文献

Time of mulching can influence the growth environment and performance of white yam (Dioscorea rotundata Poir). An on-farm trial was conducted during the 1988–1989 and 1989–1990 seasons (October–August) in Nigeria to determine the effect of time of mulching (October–February) on the hydrothermal regime and emergence, growth and tuber yield of white yam. Application of 12.5 mg ha−1 of dry Eupatorium odoratum L. (Syn. Chromolaena odorata L.) mulch on top of the mounds significantly improved soil moisture content of the 15 cm surface layer by 50–120 g kg−1 and decreased the maximum soil temperature by 2–7°C at 15 cm depth in the early growing season (March–April). The emergence and development of yam seedlings were significantly lower in unmulched plots than in mulch-treated plots. Mulching significantly increased tuber yield by about 10–15 mg ha−1 season−1. Plots mulched in October–December were more moist by 20–60 g kg−1 and cooler by 1–3°C, and had 27–44% greater emergence than those mulched in January or February. The number of leaves per plant, vine diameter and leaf area index were also significantly greater in plots mulched in October–December than plots mulched in January or February. Consequently, shoot dry weight was about 28–36% greater in yam mulched in October–December than in yam mulched in February. However, the time of mulching had no effect on soil moisture of the surface layer at the beginning of the rainy season (April), on yam emergence in May and on tuber yield and yield components. Although time of mulching did not significantly affect tuber yield, the increase (10–15%) in the tuber yield of yam mulched in December–February compared to the yam mulched in October or November was considerable. It was concluded that yam planted in October, just before the rain stops, can be mulched in January or February without detrimental effect on emergence, growth and tuber yield.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted at Fort Vermilion (58°23′N 116°02′W), Alberta, to determine phosphorus (P) release patterns from red clover (Trifolium pratense) green manure (GM), field pea (Pisum sativum), canola (Brassica rapa) and monoculture wheat (Triticum aestivum) residues in the 7th and 8th years of conventional and zero tillage. Phosphorus contained in crop residues ranged from 1.5 kg ha−1 in pea to 9.2 kg ha−1 in clover GM, both under zero tillage. The patterns of P release over a 52-week period sometimes varied with tillage, i.e., a greater percentage of GM residue P was released under conventional tillage than under zero tillage in the first 2–10 weeks of residue placement. Wheat residues resulted in net P immobilization under zero tillage, but the amounts immobilized were less than 1 kg ha−1. When net P mineralization occurred, the percentage of P released ranged from 24% of wheat P under conventional tillage to 74% of GM P under conventional tillage. The amounts of P released were 0.4 kg ha−1 from wheat, 0.8 kg ha−1 from canola, 0.4 kg ha−1 from pea and 5.1–5.6 kg ha−1 from clover GM residues. Therefore, only GM residues recycled agronomically significant amounts of P for use by subsequent crops in rotation. Phosphorus release was positively correlated with residue P concentration and negatively correlated with C/P and lignin/P ratios.  相似文献

In sandy soils of the southeastern USA coastal plains, crop production is limited by low water holding capacity and compacted soil layers that reduce root growth and productivity. Polyacrylamide (PAM) was added to sandy coastal plain soils to improve physical properties and yield. Soils were amended with linear and cross-linked PAMs. Treatments and controls included the following: (1) spraying a 600 mg kg−1 solution of linear PAM behind a subsoil shank at a rate of 3.93 kg ha−1, (2) spraying a 100 mg kg−1 solution at 0.66 kg ha−1, (3) spraying only water at 13.1 m3 ha−1, (4) dropping a dry PAM powder formulation (3005 KB) behind a subsoil shank at 300 kg ha−1, (5) dropping another dry PAM powder formulation (3005 K2) at 230 kg ha−1, (6) dropping a dry PAM powder formulation 3005 K2 at a lower rate of 55 kg ha−1, (7) applying nothing behind a subsoil shank, and (8) not subsoiling. In each of the 3 years of the experiment, new sets of treatments were set up while the old ones were maintained to look at longevity of the PAM effect. Though treatment effects were dominated by the tillage, the cross-linked PAMs were the only treatments more effective than tillage alone. The cross-linked PAMs may have been more effective because we could add more in dry form than in the spray form. The effect diminished with time similar to or faster than the results seen in tillage only. Though some PAM applications may have reduced cone indices, yields were not affected.  相似文献

Although the Midwestern United States is one of the world's major agricultural production areas, few studies have assessed the effects of the region's predominant tillage and rotation practices on greenhouse gas emissions from the soil surface. Our objectives were to (a) assess short-term chisel (CP) and moldboard plow (MP) effects on soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes relative to no-till (NT) and, (b) determine how tillage and rotation interactions affect seasonal gas emissions in continuous corn and corn–soybean rotations on a poorly drained Chalmers silty clay loam (Typic Endoaquoll) in Indiana. The field experiment itself began in 1975. Short-term gas emissions were measured immediately before, and at increasing hourly intervals following primary tillage in the fall of 2004, and after secondary tillage in the spring of 2005, for up to 168 h. To quantify treatment effects on seasonal emissions, gas fluxes were measured at weekly or biweekly intervals for up to 14 sampling dates in the growing season for corn. Both CO2 and CH4 emissions were significantly affected by tillage but not by rotation in the short-term following tillage, and by rotation during the growing season. Soil temperature and moisture conditions in the surface 10 cm were significantly related to CO2 emissions, although the proportion of variation explained by temperature and moisture was generally very low (never exceeded 27%) and varied with the tillage system being measured. In the short-term, CO2 emissions were significantly higher for CP than MP and NT. Similarly, mean seasonal CO2 emissions during the 2-year period were higher for CP (6.2 Mg CO2-C ha−1 year−1) than for MP (5.9 Mg CO2-C ha−1 year−1) and NT (5.7 Mg CO2-C ha−1 year−1). Both CP and MP resulted in low net CH4 uptake (7.6 and 2.4 kg CH4-C ha−1 year−1, respectively) while NT resulted in net emissions of 7.7 kg CH4-C ha−1 year−1. Mean emissions of CO2 were 16% higher from continuous corn than from rotation corn during the two growing seasons. After 3 decades of consistent tillage and crop rotation management for corn and soybean producing grain yields well above average in the Midwest, continuous NT production in the corn–soybean rotation was identified as the system with the least soil-derived C emissions to the atmosphere from among those evaluated prior to and during corn production.  相似文献

A limiting factor to the no-tillage system in arid and semi-arid regions is the possibility of soil densification from lack of tillage. This research examines the extent and duration of the effects of periodic (rotational) zone-tillage over 2 years, on selected soil physical and chemical properties and crop yields. In the first year four tillage treatments were applied: conventional tillage with mouldboard plow (CT), minimum tillage with chisel plow (MT), no-tillage (NT) and zone-tillage subsoiling with a paraplow (ZT). In the second year, the ZT plots were returned to NT to follow the residual effects of ZT. The soil was a loamy sand (Calcic Haploxeralf) from semi-arid Central Spain and the crop rotation was grey pea (Pisum sativum L.)–barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Crop residues on the soil surface after sowing grey pea were 85% in NT plots, 55% in ZT plots and 15% in MT plots. When comparing NT and ZT, the immediate effects of subsoiling on soil physical properties were significant (P < 0.05). Soil strength as measured by cone index approached 3.0 MPa in NT and was reduced to <1.0 MPa by ZT over 300 mm sampling depth. Soil moisture content and bulk density were improved by ZT. No-till and ZT favoured surface accumulation of soil organic carbon (SOC), total N and available P and K. Stratification ratio of SOC was not different among tillage systems, but soil N stratification ratio followed the order NT > ZT > MT > CT. Grey pea yields were reduced by 3 Mg ha−1 in the NT and MT compared with ZT. Crop residues on the soil surface after barley sowing were 80% in NT, 56% in ZT, and 12% in MT. At the end of the second year, soil strength, soil moisture and bulk density in ZT declined to NT levels at all soil depths. The positive effect of ZT in increasing SOC in the top layer had also disappeared. However, total N, and available P and K concentrations under NT and ZT were still significantly higher than in MT and CT. Stratification ratios of SOC under NT and ZT were >2 and more than two-fold those under MT and CT. Nitrogen stratification ratio under ZT increased and no significant differences between NT and ZT could be reported. Barley yield was 0.6 Mg ha−1 higher in ZT compared with NT. Our results suggest that ZT improved the physical and chemical condition of the soil studied in months following subsoiling. These positive effects, however, diminished with time and only some residual effects on total N and available P and K content in the top-layer were still evident after 2 years.  相似文献

Appropriate cultural practices need to be determined for enhancing crop yields with low inputs under rainfed conditions. A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of tillage practices and fertilizer levels on yield, nitrogen (N) uptake and carbon (C) isotope discrimination in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown under semi-arid conditions at three sites in north-west Pakistan: NIFA, Urmar and Jalozai. Two fertilizer levels, 60 kg N ha−1+30 kg P ha−1 (L1) and 60 kg N ha−1+60 kg P ha−1 (L2), were applied to wheat grown under conventional tillage (T1) and no-tillage (T0) practices. Labeled urea having 1% 15N atom excess at 60 kg N ha−1 was applied as aqueous solution in microplots within each treatment plot. A pre-sowing irrigation of 60 mm was applied and during the growing season, the crop relied entirely on rainfall (268 mm). Biomass yield, N uptake and stable C isotope composition (δ13C) of plants were determined at maturity. Yield of wheat was improved by tillage at two sites (Sites 1 and 2), while at the third site yield was reduced by tillage as compared with the no-tillage treatment. At Sites 1 and 2, nutrient addition (L2, 60 kg N ha−1+60 kg P ha−1) increased the yield of all plant parts (straw, grain and root) in contrast to Site 3 where only grain yield was increased significantly. Maximum grain yield of wheat was observed with tillage under nutrient level L2 at all sites. Generally, the tillage treatment did not affect the N content in plant parts compared with no-tillage (T0) treatment at all three sites. However, fertilizer N uptake by wheat was variable under different fertilizer levels and tillage practices. Nitrogen derived from fertilizer (Ndff) for grain at Site 2 was higher in tilled plots but was not affected by tillage practice at the other sites. The C isotope (δ13C) values varied from −28.96 to −26.03‰ under different treatments at the three sites. The δ13C values were less negative indicating more effective water use at Sites 2 and 3 compared to Site 1. The C isotope discrimination (Δ) values were positively correlated with yield of wheat straw (r=0.578*), grain (r=0.951**) and root (r=0.583*). Further, the Δ in grain had significant negative relationship (r=0.912**) with Ndff (%). The tillage practice exerted a positive effect on yield, N uptake and plant N derived from fertilizer by wheat compared to no-tillage. The positive correlation of Δ with grain, straw and root yields and negative correlation with the Ndff (%) by wheat suggest that this value (Δ) could be used to predict these parameters. However, further studies on different crops under varied environmental conditions are necessary.  相似文献

No-tillage (NT) is becoming increasingly attractive to farmers because it clearly reduces production costs relative to conventional tillage (CT). However, many producers in southern Italy are reluctant to adopt this practice because NT can have contrasting consequences on grain yield depending on weather conditions. The effect of NT and CT on continuous durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) under rainfed Mediterranean conditions was studied, over a 3-year period (2000–2002) at two locations (Foggia and Vasto) in southern Italy. Yield, grain quality [thousand kernel weight (TKW), test weight (TW) and protein content (PC)] and soil water content were assessed.Higher yield was obtained with NT than CT in the first 2 years at Foggia. In contrast, mean yield and quality parameters at Vasto were similar for the two treatments, except in the third year in which CT produced more than NT (4.6 Mg ha−1 versus 2.9 Mg ha−1). At Foggia, TW and TKW were higher in NT than CT in all years. Highest PC was obtained under CT (19.6% and 15.5% for CT versus 14.7% and 11.4% for NT, respectively, in the growing season 2000–2001 and 2001–2002) indicating that grain was shriveled with low starch accumulation. At Foggia, where this study was part of a long-term experiment started in 1995, a strong correlation was observed between yield and rainfall during the wheat growing season. The coefficient of determination (R2) values for CT and NT were 0.69* and 0.31 ns, respectively, and the regression straight line crossed around 300 mm of rainfall. These results indicate that NT was superior below this rainfall value, whereas more rainfall enhanced yield in CT. We conclude that NT performed better at Foggia with limited rainfall during the durum wheat growing season. The superior effect of NT in comparison to CT, was due to lower water evaporation from soil combined with enhanced soil water availability.  相似文献

Lack of appropriate agronomic practices is one of the major causes for soil erosion and low yields in teff (Eragrostis tef [Zucc.]) production in Ethiopia. A 3-yr study was conducted at the Aba Gerima watershed in northwestern Ethiopia, to investigate the effects of two tillage practices (reduced tillage [RT] and conventional tillage [CT]), two planting methods (row planting [RP] and broadcast planting [BP]), and two compaction options (with [+T] and without [–T] trampling) on soil loss and teff yields in a split-split plot arrangement. Sediment concentration ranged from 0.01 to 5.37 g L?1 (mean, 0.25 g L?1) in our study. Accordingly, the estimated total (August–October) soil loss ranged from 0.2 to 0.5 t ha–1 (mean, 0.3 t ha–1). The sediment concentration and total soil loss were significantly influenced (P < 0.05) by tillage, planting methods, and trampling only in the third monitoring year. RT reduced soil loss by 19% relative to that of CT, whereas RP resulted in a 13% reduction in soil loss over BP. The ?T plots showed a 15% reduction in soil loss as compared to + T plots. Results revealed significant increase in soil total carbon and nitrogen in RT and –T. Less soil loss and greater teff grain yield were obtained in plots with improved agronomic practices (RT and RP) compared to conventional ones (CT and BP). Based on our findings we conclude that the use of RT, RP, and –T practices can effectively minimize soil loss without any crop yield penalty.  相似文献

Four factorial trials were conducted with yam (Dioscorea rotundata Poir.) at Ibadan, Nigeria from 2013 to 2015, investigating effects of (1) tillage (2) fertilizer (3) intercropping (4) yam plant densities. Yam tuber yields varied between years (2013: 16.44 Mg ha?1; 2014: 10.08 Mg ha?1; 2015 26.61 Mg ha?1). In 2013 neither tillage nor fertilizer affected tuber yields. In 2014 tillage increased yields (+25.4%, P < 0.0001), fertilizer reduced yield (?10.5%; P = 0.0046). In 2015 tillage increased tuber yields by 8.1% (ns), fertilizer application increased yield (+17.5%, P = 0.0017). Across the years, tuber yields increased (P < 0.01) with increasing yam density with a constant increase in 2013 up to the highest density, yet yields leveled out above 14,815 plants ha?1 in 2014 and 2015. Intercropping with maize (66,667 plants ha?1) reduced tuber yield by 42.62% in 2013, 44.52% in 2014 and 30.68% in 2015 (P < 0.01 all years) across all yam densities. Maize grain yield was higher in sole crop in 2 years. Fertilizer increased yields in all years (P < 0.0001). Maize yield had no response to the yam densities. Ridging had a negative effect on grain yield in 2015 (?0.3 Mg ha?1, P = 0.0002). Increasing plant density appears a safe measure to increase yam yields.  相似文献

About 80% of Ethiopia's population is involved in rain‐fed agriculture. Moisture stress coupled with traditional tillage with breaking ard plough, locally known as ‘Maresha ’ are the major limiting factors for agricultural production. Soil erosion, low infiltration and decline agricultural productivity because of conventional tillage implement have been frequently reported. In order to curve this situation and meet the huge food demand of the growing population, different conservation tillage systems have been implemented. However, there is limited information about the impacts of the practices. This review paper therefore aimed at providing adequate information concerning the impacts of the practices on water balance and crop yield. Systematic, best evidence and narrative review techniques were used. Results revealed that the application of conservation tillage had brought significant improvement on water balance and agricultural production. Researchers found over 50% decreased in surface runoff, 9 to 40% improvement in water productivity and good crop transpiration (T = 53 mm season−1), compared to conventional tillage T = 49 mm‐season−1 because of conservation tillage implement. Moreover, doubled grain yield was obtained from ridging, subsoiling and wing plough (1076, 1044 and 1040 kg ha−1, respectively) compared to traditional tillage which resulted in 540 kg ha−1. Improving water balance and agricultural production in rain‐fed agriculture need to reduce evaporation and surface runoff through improving moisture retention and transpiration. This could be achieved by the adoption of conservation tillage which can improve on‐farm water balance, yields and water productivity among smallholder farmers in Ethiopia. We examined the effects of various tillage intensities: no-tillage (NT), minimum tillage with chisel plow (MT), conventional tillage with mouldboard plow (CT), and zone-tillage subsoiling with a paraplow (ZT) applied in alternate years in rotation with NT, on the topsoil profile distribution (0–30 cm) of pH, soil organic carbon (SOC), organic N and available nutrients on a semi-arid soil from Central Spain. The equivalent depth approach was used to compare SOC, N and nutrient stocks in the various tillage treatments. Measurements made at the end of 5 years showed that in the 0–30 cm depth, SOC and N had increased under NT and ZT compared with MT and CT. Most dramatic changes occurred within the 0–5 cm depth where plots under NT and ZT had respectively 7.0 Mg ha−1 and 6.2 Mg ha−1 more SOC and 0.5 Mg ha−1 and 0.3 Mg ha−1 more N than under MT or CT. No-tillage and ZT plots, however, exhibited strong vertical gradients of SOC and N with concentrations decreasing from 0–5 to 20–30 cm. In the 0–20 cm layer, higher concentrations of P and K under NT and ZT than under MT or CT were also found. Soil pH under NT and ZT was 0.3 units lower than under MT or CT at a depth of 0–5 cm. This acidifying effect was restricted at the surface layer and in the 20–30 cm interval, pH values under NT and ZT were higher than in MT and CT plots. These results suggest that in the soil studied, ZT in rotation with NT maintain most advantages associated with NT, and present a definite potential for use as a partial-width rotational tillage practice.  相似文献

A loamy sand Acrisol (Aquic Hapludult) that had been microirrigated for 6 years became so severely compacted that it had root limiting values of soil cone index in the Ap horizon and a genetic hardpan below it. Deep and surface tillage systems were evaluated for their ability to alleviate compaction. Deep tillage included subsoiling or none. Both deep tillage treatments were also surface tilled by disking, chiseling, or not tilling. Subsoiling was located in row or between rows to avoid microirrigation tubes (laterals) that were buried under every other mid row or every row. Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) was planted in 0.96-m wide rows. Cotton yield was improved by irrigation from 485 to 1022 kg ha−1 because both 2001 and 2002 were dry years. Tillage loosened the soil by an average of 0.5–1.3 MPa; but compacted zones remained outside tilled areas. Subsoiling improved yield by 131 kg ha−1 when performed in row where laterals were placed in the mid rows; but subsoiling did not improve yield when it was performed in mid rows. For subsurface irrigation management in these soils, the treatment with laterals buried under every other mid row was able to accommodate in-row subsoiling which improved yield; and this treatment was just as productive as and had been shown to be less expensive to install than burying laterals under every row.  相似文献

The impact of intensive cultivation for potato production on the earthworm populations was assessed in two adjacent large field plots. Three successive winter wheat crops had been grown in one plot while winter wheat was grown with minimum cultivation in an understorey of white clover in the other. Both plots were ploughed in spring 1998 and intensively cultivated (grubbing, ridging, bed-tilling, destoning, ridging) prior to planting potatoes. Earthworm populations were reduced from a mean density of 319 individuals m–2 and 55 g m–2 biomass in the conventional wheat plot, and from 1160 individuals and 175 g m–2 biomass in the wheat–clover plot in the 1996/1997 cropping season, to 40–82 individuals and 4–19 g m–2 in June–October 1998 following potato planting. Populations declined to virtually undetectable levels following mechanical potato harvesting in late autumn 1998 and spring cultivation for barley in 1999, remained at very low levels throughout 1999 and had shown no sign of recovering by May 2000. The results show that earthworm populations can be virtually eliminated within a single season by drastic forms of soil cultivation.  相似文献

Broiler chicken (Gallus gallus) manure, a rich source of plant nutrients, is generated in large quantities in southeastern USA where many row crops, such as corn (Zea mays L.), are also extensively grown. However, the use of broiler manure as an economical alternative source of nutrients for corn production has not been extensively explored in this region. This study was conducted to examine the use of broiler litter as a source of nutrients for corn production, as influenced by tillage and litter rate, and any residual effects following application. In addition, the consequence of litter application to soil test nutrient levels, particularly P, Zn and Cu, was explored. The treatments consisted of two rates of broiler litter application, 11 and 22 Mg ha−1 on a wet weight basis, and one rate of chemical fertilizer applied under no-till and conventional tillage systems. Treatments were replicated three times in a randomized complete block design. Corn was grown with broiler litter and inorganic fertilizer applied to the same plots each year from 1998 to 2001. In 2002 and 2003, corn was planted no-till, but only N fertilizer was applied in order to make use of other residual litter nutrients. Soil samples were taken yearly in the spring prior to litter application and 4 years after the cessation of litter application to evaluate the status of the residual nutrients in soil. Two years out of the 4-year experiment, broiler litter application produced significantly greater corn grain yield than equivalent chemical fertilizer application and produced similar grain yield in the other 2 years. Corn grain yield was significantly greater under no-till in 1999, but significantly greater under conventional-till in 2000, and no difference between the two tillage systems were observed in 1998 and 2001. With 4 years of litter application, Mehlich-3 P increased from an initial 18 mg kg−1 to 156 mg kg−1 with 11 Mg ha−1 litter and to 257 mg kg−1 with 22 Mg ha−1 litter. For every 6 kg ha−1 of P applied in poultry litter Mehlich-3 P was increased by 1 mg kg−1. Modest increases in Mehlich-3 Cu and Zn did not result in phytotoxic levels. This study indicated that an optimum rate of broiler litter as a primary fertilizer at 11 Mg ha−1 applied in 4 consecutive years on a silt loam soil produced corn grain yields similar to chemical fertilizer under both no-till and conventional tillage systems and kept soil test P, Cu and Zn levels below values considered to be harmful to surface water quality or the crop.  相似文献

Northeast China, the important grain-producing region in China, is under threat from soil degradation because of long-term conventional tillage (CT). The adoption of conservation tillage is anticipated to restore soil fertility, maintain crop yields and enhance sustainability. However, the integrated effects of conservation tillage practice on crop yields and soil organic carbon (SOC) remain unclear. In this meta-analysis of peer-reviewed studies conducted in the Northeast China region, we assess crop yields and SOC values under no-till, ridge tillage and subsoiling tillage practices. The results indicate that in areas with mean annual temperatures (MAT) below 3°C, crop yields were significantly (p < .05) higher under ridge tillage (0.8%) and subsoiling tillage (13.1%) compared with CT, whereas yields reduced under no-till (−3.7%). Ridge tillage generally had a similar effect on crop yield as no-till, without the negative impact in colder regions. We also report that no-till practice increased SOC concentrations by 24.1%, 43.9% and 17.4% in areas of higher temperature (MAT > 6°C), low mean annual precipitation (MAP) (<500 mm) and continuous cropping conditions, respectively. Ridge tillage and subsoiling tillage also had positive effects on SOC concentrations (to a lesser degree than no-till), indicating that conservation tillage can enhance SOC in Northeast China. Overall, the implementation of different conservation tillage measures in Northeast China was found to enhance crop yields and sequester carbon. We recommend that ridge tillage is used in colder areas and that subsoiling tillage is used in rotation with other tillage measures to maintain crop yields.  相似文献
