Previously, GH response to GHRH challenge at weaning has been shown to be indicative of ADG during a standard postweaning growth performance test in Angus cattle. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that GH response to GHRH before weaning would predict postweaning ADG. Bulls with the highest and lowest GH responses to GHRH over a 3-yr period, relative to their contemporaries, were used as sires, to allow for examination of the persistence of GH response to GHRH through selection. The selected calves in this study were sired by one of four Angus bulls chosen based on their GH response to GHRH (high response, n = 2; low response, n = 2). Forty-nine Angus calves (bulls, n = 24; heifers, n = 25) were challenged with GHRH at approximately 60, 105, and 150 d of age and at weaning (219 d; SD = 25). Blood samples were taken immediately prior to and 10 min following an i.v. clearance dose of 4.5 microg of GHRH/100 kg BW and, 2 h later, immediately prior to and 10 min following a challenge dose of either 1.5 or 4.5 microg of GHRH/100 kg BW. Two hours later, the procedure was repeated, with each calf receiving the other challenge dose. Body weight was measured every 28 d and ADG was calculated over a 140-d growth performance test (heifers and bulls maintained separately). Data were log-transformed for statistical analyses. In the selected bulls and heifers, response of GH to 1.5 microg of GHRH/100 kg BW at 60 and 105 d of age was positively related (P < 0.05) to postweaning ADG. Response to 4.5 microg of GHRH/100 kg BW at 105 d of age and at weaning was positively related (P < 0.01) to postweaning ADG. Inclusion of sire in the analysis improved the relationship between GH response and ADG for calves of sires with high GH responses from R2 = 0.18 (P = 0.01) to R2 = 0.33 (P = 0.02). When the GH response to GHRH of the unselected calves at weaning was added to the data from the selected animals and analyzed, the GH response of the bulls was related to postweaning ADG (R2 = 0.09; P = 0.04). In conclusion, GH response to GHRH as early as 60 d of age is indicative of postweaning ADG in beef cattle. In addition, the relationship between GH response to GHRH and postweaning ADG is improved with selection for greater GH response to GHRH.  相似文献

The response of GH to GHRH at weaning is known to predict postweaning growth and body composition in beef bulls. The objective of this study was to determine whether GH response to a challenge of GHRH and plasma IGF-I can predict growth rate and body composition in the beef heifer. Growth hormone response to a challenge with two doses of GHRH was measured in 67 Angus heifers averaging 225 d of age (SD = 21) and 217 kg BW (SD = 32). Blood samples were collected at 0 and 10 min relative to an initial "clearance dose" (4.5 micrograms GHRH/100 kg BW) and again, 3 h later, relative to a challenge dose (1.5 or 4.5 micrograms GHRH/100 kg BW). Each animal received each of the two challenge doses, which were randomly assigned across 2 d of blood collection. Serum GH concentration was measured by RIA. Plasma was collected every 28 d during a 140-d growth test and assayed for IGF-I by RIA. Body weight was measured every 28 d and hip height was measured at weaning and at the end of a 140-d growth test. Average daily gain was calculated on d 140 of the growth test and body composition measurements were estimated by ultrasound 2 wk after completion of the growth test. Responses to the two GHRH challenges were dose-dependent (P < 0.05). Average daily gain tended to be related to GH response to the 1.5 micrograms GHRH/100 kg BW dose (R2 = 0.05; P = 0.06), but no relationship was observed at the 4.5 micrograms GHRH/100 kg BW dose (R2 = 0.00; P = 0.93). An inverse relationship (R2 = 0.06; P = 0.02) was observed between response to the 1.5 micrograms GHRH/100 kg BW dose and intramuscular fat percentage. Mean plasma IGF-I concentration was positively associated with ADG (R2 = 0.06; P < 0.01). Growth hormone response to GHRH is modestly related to body composition but not to ADG in weanling beef heifers and likely has limited use in evaluation of growth performance in replacement beef heifers.  相似文献

Milk production is a primary factor controlling weaning weight of beef calves. The purpose of this experiment was to develop a practical and reliable on-farm method of estimating milk production and to relate estimates of milk production and milk composition to preweaning weight gain of calves. A second objective was to relate milk production to postpartum ovarian activity. Milk production of spring- and fall-calving grade Angus cows was estimated by machine milking (MM; average of 66, 123 and 189 d postpartum) and weigh-suckle-weigh (WSW; average of 50, 95, 136 and 179 d postpartum) techniques following overnight calf removal. Cows and calves were weighed monthly and the postpartum interval to first ovulation following calving was determined. The repeatability of the estimated milk production by MM (.97) was higher (P less than .01) than by WSW (.35). The correlation of average WSW and average MM estimates of milk production with preweaning calf gain were high and similar (greater than .75). Inclusion of milk composition did not improve the multiple correlation of MM-estimated milk production and calf gain. Neither milk production in early lactation (-.06) nor prebreeding weight change (-.07) was correlated with postpartum interval to ovulation. Machine milking was a repeatable method of estimating milk production of beef cows and can be used to evaluate effects of management variables on lactation of beef cows.  相似文献

In two experiments, Black Angus bulls were challenged at weaning with GHRH analog and evaluated for their GH response to determine whether GH response can predict subsequent growth characteristics. The GH response was determined by measuring GH in blood serum collected 0 and 10 min after GHRH injection (Exp. 1: 1.5 microg/100 kg BW human GHRH, n = 34; Exp. 2: 1.5 and 4.5 microg/100 kg BW bovine GHRH [treatments LGHRH and HGHRH, respectively] administered 3 h after a 4.5 microg/100 kg BW "clearance dose" of GHRH, n = 38]. In Exp. 1, GH response did not predict growth or carcass measurements. In Exp. 2, GH response to LGHRH was positively related to ADG (R2 = .18; P = .007) during a 112-d controlled feeding trial. In addition, there was a tendency for bulls with a greater GH response to HGHRH to exhibit greater ADG than animals with a low response. However, GH response to GHRH was not related to changes in hip height (HH) or carcass ultrasound measurements at d 112 of the growth performance trial. Response of GH to repeated GHRH challenges was consistent within animal over time (r = .47; P = .003). The use of a clearance dose 3 h prior to GHRH challenge improved the relationship between GH response and ADG. Results of this study suggest that GH response to GHRH challenge is a useful tool for identifying beef bulls with superior growth potential.  相似文献

The milk intake in piglets from four lactating sows was measured in three 48 h periods, starting on days 3, 10 and 17 of lactation, using the deuterium oxide (D 2 O) dilution technique. The milk intake was estimated from the water turnover in the piglets corrected for the production of metabolic water. The water turnover was estimated from the water dilution space and the fractional turnover of body water, determined by the rate of D 2 O dilution. To determine the magnitude of isotopic recycling, a randomly selected piglet in each litter was not enriched with D 2 O. Milk production of the four lactating sows was also measured by the weigh-suckle-weigh (WSW) method on days 4, 11 and 18 of lactation. The average daily milk production determined by the D 2 O dilution technique (9.91 - 0.69 kg) was higher ( P <0.05) than that determined by the uncorrected WSW method (8.65 - 0.81 kg). Different procedures for selecting piglets were evaluated to obtain the best possible estimation of total milk production from three piglets in each litter. The total milk production of a sow based on three piglets in the litter was obtained from a quadratic model of the relationship between milk intake and daily gain. When the daily gain of all piglets were known the Pearson correlation between milk production determined for the whole litter ( n -1) and only three median piglets was 0.98.  相似文献

In Exp. 1, Simmental (n = 21) and Angus (n = 21) heifers, approximately 9 mo of age, were used in a 160-d study to determine the effect of dietary Cu on growth and Cu status. Two- or three-yr-old first-calf heifers (21 Angus and 21 Simmental) entering into their last trimester of pregnancy were used in Exp. 2 to estimate Cu requirements of the two breeds during gestation and early lactation. Treatments in both studies consisted of 0 (control), 7, or 14 mg of supplemental Cu (as CuSO4)/kg of DM. The control corn silage-based diets contained 6.4 and 4.4 mg of Cu/kg of DM in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively, and 1.2 mg of Mo/kg. Dietary Cu did not affect performance in either breed in Exp. 1. Copper supplementation generally did not affect plasma Cu concentrations in Angus heifers, but increased (P < 0.05) plasma Cu in Simmental heifers from d 37 until the end of Exp. 1. Final liver Cu concentrations were lower (P < 0.05) than initial concentrations in control Angus and Simmental heifers; however, liver Cu increased (P < 0.01) in Cu-supplemented heifers. In Exp. 2, Cu supplementation of the control diet increased (P < 0.05) plasma Cu during gestation and greatly increased (P < 0.01) liver Cu in both breeds. Calves born to cows not supplemented with Cu also had lower plasma Cu concentrations than Cu-supplemented calves by 73 d of age. In both studies, control Simmental heifers had lower (P < 0.05) plasma Cu concentrations than Angus on most sampling dates. When Cu was supplemented at 7 or 14 mg/kg of DM,few differences in plasma Cu concentrations were observed between breeds. Results suggest that Angus heifers have a lower minimal Cu requirement than Simmental. Based on liver Cu, the control diets containing 4.4 or 6.4 mg of Cu/kg of DM did not meet the Cu requirement of either breed during gestation and lactation or growth. Addition of 7 mg of Cu/kg of DM to the control diets met Cu requirements of both breeds.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of early weaning fall-born calves on heifer and calf performance in Florida. Over two consecutive years, 3-yr-old Braford and Brahman x Angus first-calf heifers were assigned randomly to one of two treatments; early-weaned (EW, n = 20 and 30 for yr 1 and 2, respectively) and normal-weaned (NW, n = 20 and 38 for yr 1 and 2, respectively). Calves were EW on January 23 and 3 for yr 1 and 2, respectively. Following EW, all first-calf heifers were returned to bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) pastures with the mature cowherd. Early-weaned calves were maintained on annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) pastures at 8.2 and 10.7 calves/ha for yr 1 and 2, respectively, and were provided supplemental grain mixture (14% CP) at 1.0% of BW daily. Normal-weaned calves remained with their dams in the mature cowherd on bahiagrass. Final calf BW was collected on April 17 (d 84) and April 24 (d 111) for yr 1 and 2, respectively. Early-weaned calves had a greater (P < 0.001) ADG (0.17 kg/d) in yr 1, but a lower (P < 0.001) ADG (-0.24 kg/d) in yr 2 compared with NW calves. Early weaning resulted in heavier first-calf heifers with greater BCS at the time of normal weaning (August 1; 491 vs. 452 kg, with BCS = 6.34 vs. 4.75 for EW and NW heifers, respectively; SEM = 5.0 and 0.07). Heifers with EW calves had a higher (P < 0.07) pregnancy rate during both years than normal-weaned heifers (89.5 vs. 50.0 and 96.7 vs. 80.0% pregnant during yr 1 and 2, respectively). Early-weaned, first-calf heifers also had a lower (P < 0.05) calving interval in yr 2 (384 vs. 404 d; SEM = 6.0). These data suggest that EW will improve body condition of first-calf heifers resulting in an increased pregnancy rate. Early-weaned calves maintained on winter ryegrass provide producers with the ability to optimize early-weaned calf performance, while capitalizing on low cost of gain and favorable spring markets.  相似文献

In dairy cattle, increased circulating growth hormone has been associated with selection for greater milk yield. This study tested the hypothesis that beef cows divergently selected for milk production would have differing GH responses to a challenge dose of GHRH. Growth hormone response to a challenge of GHRH was measured in 36 Angus-sired cows ranging from 6 to 10 yr of age. The cows were classified as high milking (n = 16) or low milking (n = 20), on the basis of their sires' milk EPD. Mean milk EPD (in kilograms) were 16.6 and -14.4 for high and low milking cows, respectively. Milk production was estimated by the weigh-suckle-weigh procedure. Blood samples were taken immediately before and 10 min after a clearance dose of 4.5 microg of GHRH/100 kg BW (injected i.v.) and, 3 h later, immediately before and 10 min after a challenge dose of either 1.5 or 4.5 microg of GHRH/100 kg BW. Each animal received both challenge doses, and the doses were randomly assigned across 2 d of blood collection. Serum concentrations of GH and IGF-I were measured by RIA. Serum IGF-I was measured in the baseline blood sample on d 1 of blood collection. A positive relationship (r = 0.35; P = 0.03) was observed between the cows' rankings for each dose of GHRH; that is, high responders to the low dose were high responders to the high dose. Growth hormone response to the 4.5 microg/100 kg BW challenge dose of GHRH was positively related to sire milk EPD (R2 = 0.09; P = 0.03). Response of GH to the 1.5 microg GHRH/100 kg BW challenge dose also tended to be related (P = 0.08) to sire milk EPD of high milking cows. In addition, IGF-I concentrations of high milking cows were inversely related (R2 = 0.24; P = 0.04) to sire milk EPD. Growth hormone response to GHRH challenge may have potential as an additional tool in the evaluation of milk production in beef cattle.  相似文献

Development of practical, physiologically based methods that provide an early, yet accurate, evaluation of a bull's genetic merit could benefit the beef industry. The use of GH response to a single, acute dose of GHRH was evaluated as a predictor of future growth performance and carcass characteristics of weanling bulls. Fifty-six Angus bulls averaging 229 d (SD = 27) of age were administered three doses i.v. (0, 1.5, and 4.5 microg/100 kg BW) of human GHRH (1-29) analog in a Latin square design balanced for residual effects. Blood samples were collected via jugular catheter at -60, -45, -30, -15, 0, 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 min relative to GHRH injection. Serum concentrations of GH were plotted over time. Response to GHRH was calculated as the area under the GH response curve (AUC-GH) using the trapezoidal approximation. Relationships between AUC-GH, weaning weight adjusted to 205 d of age (205-d WW), and direct weaning weight EPD (WWEPD) versus age-adjusted BW (BWadj), ADG, and carcass measurements from a 140-d growth performance test were evaluated using simple linear regression. A positive correlation between AUC-GH and ADG and an inverse relationship between AUC-GH and carcass fat were observed. The present study provides evidence that AUC-GH is a better predictor of future growth performance in beef bulls than 205-d WW or WWEPD values. Thus, GH response to GHRH is associated with subsequent growth and may be a useful tool for sire selection in beef production.  相似文献

Two 60-d experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of supplementing degradable (DIP) and(or) undegradable (UIP) intake protein on the performance of lactating first-calf heifers. Diets were formulated to meet the requirements for either DIP, metabolizable protein (MP), or both when diets contained low-quality grass hay and an efficiency of microbial protein synthesis estimate of 10%. In Exp. 1, 32 individually fed first-calf heifers (avg 395 kg) were allotted to a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments (main effects of DIP, MP, and DIP x MP interaction) 1 d after calving. Cows consumed a basal diet of chopped crested wheat grass hay (4.3% CP, 67% DIP) ad libitum. Supplemental DIP and UIP were supplied by varying the ratios of soybean meal (75% DIP) and a heat-treated, protected soybean meal (70% UIP). Cow weight gain was better (P < 0.01) when adequate DIP was supplied than when DIP was deficient. However, calf weight gain was not increased by supplementing the cow with DIP. Supplemental UIP did not (P > 0.40) improve cow or calf weight gain. Blood urea N levels were higher (P < 0.01) for cows receiving supplemental DIP and UIP. However, milk production estimates were similar among treatments, as were digestibilities of OM and ADF. Nitrogen digestibility was greater when supplemental DIP was fed, but providing additional UIP did not (P = 0.15) change N digestibilities. Experiment 2 evaluated similar supplements using the same experimental design to determine changes in cow and calf weight gain, body condition score, and pregnancy rate. Seventy-two first-calf heifers (avg 441 kg) were allotted to supplement treatments 1 d after calving and were fed grass hay (5% CP, 53% DIP, 10% microbial efficiency) for ad libitum consumption for 60 d. Supplements were individually fed three times/week. Varying the ratios of soybean meal, heat-treated soybean meal, and corn gluten meal provided additional DIP and UIP. Unlike in Exp. 1, supplemental UIP improved (P < 0.05) cow weight gain. Calves from dams supplemented with DIP gained 5 kg more weight after 60 d than calves from dams deficient in DIP. Pregnancy rates in the fall were similar (P = 0.90) among treatments. These data suggest that DIP was more limiting in Exp. 1 than was UIP. Supplementing UIP in Exp. 2 improved cow weight gains but did not improve calf gains. Data suggest that the efficiency of microbial protein synthesis for this forage-based diet was probably less than 10%.  相似文献

Interrelationships among milk production, dam-calf feed efficiency to weaning, and other biological traits were evaluated on 411 first-calf heifers and their calves. Individual feed intakes were measured in a drylot environment for a 1-yr period until weaning of the first calf. Heifer breed types included crossbred Angus-Hereford, Simmental-Hereford, and Tarentaise-Hereford produced in two-breed rotational crossbreeding systems, F1 Salers-Hereford and straightbred Hereford. Production efficiency was defined as cumulative feed ME consumed by the dam-calf pair during the year divided by calf weaning weight. Milk production potential seemed to be unrelated to cow size, adjusted for breed-group effects. Lactational feed energy was increased for dams of increased milk production potential but not enough to offset the increased production of calf weaning weight in terms of production efficiency. Results indicated that increased levels of milk production of heifers were associated with improved production efficiency to weaning. However, the incremental improvement in efficiency per unit of increased milk was less for each additional unit of milk, within the range evaluated. These results are applicable to first-calf heifers that have not yet reached peak age for maximum milk production.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of feeding endophyte (Acremonium coenophialum)-infected fescue (Festuca arundinacea Shreb.) seed on LH secretion in postpartum beef cows and in cycling heifers and cows. In Exp. 1, spring-calving primiparous Angus cows (n = 16) were pair-fed for 75 d diets that contained endophyte-free or endophyte-infected (95%) fescue seed that contained 1.3 micrograms/g of ergovaline and 5.2 mg/g of saturated pyrrolizidines. Serial blood samples for basal and GnRH-stimulated serum LH analysis were obtained on d 7, 28, 42, and 56 of the study. The endophyte had no effect on LH secretion (basal, pulse frequency, and amplitude) or milk production. Average daily gain was decreased (P < .05) in cows that consumed infected fescue seed compared with controls (-.20 vs -.01 kg, respectively). Basal serum prolactin concentrations were reduced (P < .01) in treated compared with control cows (8.9 vs 25.4 ng/mL, respectively) on d 70. In Exp. 2, cycling Angus heifers (n = 8; age = 2 yr) and cows (n = 8; age = 4 yr) stratified by age were pair-fed for 40 d diets that contained the noninfected or the highly infected fescue seed. Estrus was synchronized by prostaglandin F2 alpha (d 18 and 28). Serial blood samples for serum LH analysis were obtained on d 28 (luteal phase) and d 30 (follicular phase). The endophyte did not affect LH (P > .28) or prolactin (P > .16) secretion, whereas ADG was decreased (P < .05) in treated compared with control animals (.32 vs .70 kg/d, respectively).  相似文献

Biological efficiency of beef production to weaning and to slaughter was estimated in three groups of cattle reasonably similar in growth and mature size but different in the amount of milk available to the calves (low (L) = Hereford x Angus, medium (M) = Red Poll x Angus and high (H) = Milking Shorthorn x Angus). Efficiency was defined as the ratio of estimated kilograms of calf weight weaned or carcass weight produced by a herd of 100 first-cross cows to estimated metabolizable energy (ME) intake by the cows and preweaning non-milk ME intake by the calves or preweaning non-milk and postweaning ME intake by the calves. Efficiencies were estimated assuming observed and average reproductive rates, and using observed energy requirements for maintenance, as well as the same requirements for maintenance in the M and H groups. With the observed reproductive rates and requirements for maintenance, efficiencies to weaning and to slaughter were 28.1, 27.4 and 27.4 g weaning weight per Mcal ME and 22.0, 20.6 and 20.3 g carcass weight per Mcal ME for the L, M and H groups, respectively. With average requirements for maintenance, efficiencies were 28.2 and 27.5 to weaning and 20.8 and 20.4 to slaughter for the M and H groups, respectively. Under equal reproductive rates and observed maintenance requirements, efficiencies were 28.3, 27.2 and 27.7 to weaning, and 22.1, 20.6 and 20.6 to slaughter for the L, M and H groups, respectively. With average maintenance requirements, efficiencies were 27.5 and 27.4 to weaning and 20.7 and 20.5 to slaughter for the M and H groups, respectively. Across the production output and input assumption scenarios, the L group consistently was the most efficient, especially when evaluated at slaughter of calves.  相似文献

Growth and digestion trials were conducted to determine the efficacy of supplemental fat for developing beef heifers consuming a bromegrass hay-based diet. In Exp. 1, Angus x Gelbvieh heifers were allotted to one of three treatments in a randomized complete block design experiment for 2 consecutive yr (yr 1: n = 88, BW = 263.6 ± 0.6 kg; yr 2: n = 56, BW = 276.8 ± 3.1 kg). Supplemental treatments included a hand-fed corn- and soybean meal-based supplement (CRN), a hand-fed corn- and soybean meal-based supplement containing 15% soybean oil (OIL), or a self-fed tub supplement containing 16.7% (as fed) soapstocks (TUB). Heifers were inseminated and diagnosed for pregnancy following the conclusion of the feeding period. For Exp. 2, IVDMD and volatile fatty acids (VFA) were determined using the proportions of hay and supplement that heifers consumed in Exp.1, yr 1. Treatment differences for Exp. 1 and 2 were evaluated using the single degree of freedom orthogonal contrasts, CRN + OIL vs TUB and OIL vs TUB. Total feed intake tended to be less (P=0.09) for heifers on the TUB treatment in Exp. 1, yr 1; however, hay intake was greater (P=0.02) for heifers on the TUB treatment than for hand-fed heifers. In both years, hand-fed heifers had greater ADG (P≤0.02) and BW gain efficiencies (P≤0.005) than did heifers on the TUB treatment. Average daily gain and gain efficiency were also greater (P≤0.02) for heifers on the OIL treatment than for heifers on the TUB treatment in yr 1 and 2. Overall pregnancy rate was greater (P≤0.03) for heifers on CRN and OIL than for heifers on the TUB treatment (93.2% vs 72.4%) in yr 1. In yr 2, however, overall pregnancy rates were similar (P=0.30) among all treatment groups. In Exp. 2, IVDMD was greater (P=0.002) for hand-fed diets than for the TUB diet. Total VFA were not different (P=0.34) among supplement treatments; however, the acetate:propionate ratio was less (P=0.0001) for the CRN and OIL treatments compared with the TUB treatment. Less than projected intake of TUB supplement and, thus, an overall lower plane of nutrition contributed to decreased growth in both years and poorer reproductive performance in yr 1 for heifers on the TUB treatment compared with heifers that were hand-fed a supplement.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of diet on growth of steers weaned at approximately 100 vs 205 d of age. In Exp. 1, a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial experiment was conducted using 78 Angus crossbred cow-calf pairs. The factors examined were age at weaning (early, at 103+/-3 d [EW] vs normal, at 203+/-3 d [NW]), feeding strategy (ad libitum vs postweaning programmed intake), and dietary CP concentration (100 vs 120% of NRC [1984] recommended levels). Early-weaned calves had a greater (P < .001) ADG than NW calves from 103 to 203 d and reached market weight at 385 d vs 418 d for NW calves (P < .001). Likewise, steers offered feed for ad libitum consumption reached market weight at 394 d, compared with 409 d for programmed-intake steers (P < .05). In Exp. 2, 64 Angus crossbred steers were either weaned at 93+/-3 d and fed one of four diets, weaned at 210+/-3 d without access to creep feed, or weaned at 210+/-3 d with access to creep feed for 60 d prior to weaning. Early-weaned calves were heavier (P < .01) than NW calves at 210 d if fed either 100 or 90% concentrate diets, and they had greater (P < .001) backfat thickness at 210 d but no difference (P > .10) in longissimus muscle area compared to EW calves fed a 60% concentrate diet. At slaughter, 80 to 100% of steers on all treatments graded low Choice or higher. Feeding high-concentrate diets to EW beef calves accelerated growth rate and fat deposition early in the feeding period and may be a way to provide young cattle for a high-quality beef market.  相似文献

Twelve 3/4 Angus (Angus) and 12 Wagyu-cross (1/2 Wagyu x 1/2 Angus) (Wagyu) heifers were weaned at 180 d of age and grazed on endophyte-infected tall fescue for 16 mo before entering the feedlot as 2-yr-olds. Twelve 3/4 Angus heifer calves and 12 Wagyu-cross heifer calves from the following year's calf crop were weaned at 142 +/- 4.1 d of age, immediately adjusted to an 80% concentrate diet, and finished as calves. All heifers were fed a common finishing diet until an estimated 50% of their respective group would grade USDA low Prime or better based on ultrasound predictions. Ultrasound measurements of s.c. and i.m. fat depots were recorded at 60-d intervals throughout the finishing period. Heifers finished as calves had higher (P = 0.02) marbling scores at any given fat thickness and gained more efficiently (P < or = 0.01) at any given marbling score than heifers finished as 2-yr-olds. Gain:feed decreased quadratically (P < or = 0.05) as 12th-rib fat thickness increased for Angus and Wagyu heifers. Gain:feed decreased linearly (P < or = 0.01) for Wagyu calves and quadratically (P < or = 0.01) for Angus calves as 12th-rib fat thickness increased. However, these differences in slope were not different (P = 0.34) as a result of breed among heifers finished as calves. Marbling score increased linearly (P < or = 0.01) as 12th-rib fat thickness increased for Angus and Wagyu heifers finished as 2-yrolds or as calves. However, Wagyu heifers, regardless of age at feedlot entry, had a higher marbling score (P < or = 0.05) at any given 12th-rib fat thickness than Angus heifers. Finishing early-weaned heifers as calves as opposed to 2-yr-olds results in i.m. fat deposition during a period of more efficient growth. Additionally, including Wagyu genetics into the breeding of early-weaned heifers finished as calves or as 2-yr-olds results in higher marbling scores at any 12th-rib fat thickness.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of transportation and commingling on measures of the acute-phase protein response in newly weaned beef calves. Thirty-two (Exp. 1; average BW = 266 +/- 20.8 kg) and thirty-six (Exp. 2; average BW = 222 +/- 34.6 kg) Brahman-crossbred calves were randomly allotted to one of four treatments (2 x 2 factorial arrangement [transportation x commingling] in a completely randomized design). Body weight and jugular blood were collected at weaning, after shipment, and 1, 3, and 7 d after transport for Exp. 1, and at weaning and 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, and 21 d after transport for Exp. 2. Feed intake within pen was recorded daily for Exp. 2. Plasma fibrinogen, ceruloplasmin, haptoglobin, and cortisol concentrations were determined for all collection times. Additionally, serum amyloid-A and alpha-acid glycoprotein concentrations were determined in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively. In Exp. 2, commingled calves tended (P = 0.13) to have a higher DMI than noncommingled calves (5.3 and 4.8 kg/d, respectively). Transported calves lost more BW than nontransported calves from the time of weaning to d 1 (2.0 and 3.1% more BW loss for Exp. 1 and 2, respectively). With the exception of haptoglobin in Exp. 1, each of the acute-phase proteins measured in these studies increased over each sampling day. In Exp. 1, transported calves had higher (P < 0.05) mean serum amyloid-A concentrations than nontransported calves (48.9 vs. 33.4 microg/mL). There was a significant sampling day x transportation interaction (P < 0.01) for fibrinogen, ceruloplasmin, and haptoglobin in Exp. 1; transported calves had higher concentrations of fibrinogen following transport and on d 2 and 3, and ceruloplasmin on d 3. Haptoglobin concentrations were higher (P = 0.04) in nontransported calves on d 1 and 2 of Exp. 1. In Exp. 2, overall mean haptoglobin concentrations were higher in nontransported vs. transported calves. The results of these studies indicate that stressors associated with transportation affect the acute-phase protein response in newly weaned beef calves. More research is needed to determine whether these proteins might be valuable indicators of stress following the weaning process.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the response of supplementing primiparous heifers based on the metabolizable protein (MP) system during pregnancy and lactation. In Exp. 1, 12 pregnant, March-calving heifers (432 +/- 10 kg) grazing Sandhills range were randomly allotted to one of two treatments: supplementation based on either the MP system (MPR) or the CP system (CPR). Supplements were fed to individual heifers from October to February and no hay was offered. Grazed forage organic matter intake (FOMI) was measured in November, January, and February. In Exp. 2, 18 heifers (424 +/- 8 kg) were randomly allotted to one of three treatments: 1) supplementation based on the MP system with hay fed in January and February (average 2.0 kg/d; MPR/hay), 2) supplementation based on the CP system, with hay fed in January and February (CPR/hay), or 3) supplementation based on the MP system, with no hay fed (MPR/no hay). Supplements were fed from October to February, and FOMI was measured in December and February. In Exp. 3, lactating 2-yr-old cows (394 +/- 7 kg) maintained on meadow hay were supplemented to meet either 1) MP requirements (LMPR) or 2) degradable intake protein requirements (LDIPR). Body weight (BW) and body condition score change, hay intake, and milk production were measured. In Exp. 1, grazed FOMI decreased (P = 0.0001) from 1.9% of BW in November to 1.2% in February, but no differences among treatments were detected for FOMI or BW change. In Exp. 2, grazed FOMI declined (P = 0.0001) from 1.7% of BW in December to 1.1% in February, with no differences among treatments. Heifers on the MPR/hay and CPR/hay treatments had higher (P = 0.0018) total intake (grazed forage + hay intake) in February (1.7% BW) than the MPR/no hay heifers (1.1% BW). Heifers on the MPR/no hay treatment had a lower weight (P = 0.02) and tended (P = 0.11) to have a lower BCS than heifers on other treatments. In Exp. 3, the LMPR cows had higher (P = 0.02) ADG than LDIPR cows (0.41 and 0.14, respectively), but treatment did not affect milk production. Organic matter hay intake averaged 2.4% of BW. We conclude that supplementation to meet MP requirements had little benefit to heifer performance during gestation, but increased weight change during lactation. Because grazed forage intake decreased from 1.9 to 1.1% of BW with advancing gestation, supplemental energy is necessary to reduce weight and condition loss of gestating hefiers grazing dormant Sandhills range.  相似文献

In vitro digestion and growth studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of level of soybean oil inclusion in forage-based diets. In Exp. 1, diets were bromegrass hay (H), bromegrass hay and corn-soybean meal supplement (C), C with 3% added soybean oil (O3), and C with 6% added soybean (O6). Diets containing supplements were formulated to be isonitrogenous and isocaloric. Treatment means were compared using a single-degree-of-freedom contrast (H vs C, O3, and O6) and orthogonal polynomial contrasts within diets C, O3, and O6. Diet H had the lowest (P = .0003) IVDMD and a linear decline (P = .0001) in IVDMD was observed from C to O6, but 24-h IVDMD disappearance was greatest (P = .001; quadratic) for O3. Total VFA increased from C to O3 and then decreased from O3 to O6 (quadratic; P = .001), and acetate:propionate ratio decreased linearly (P = .0001) from C to O6. Changes in long-chain fatty acids reflected biohydrogenation by ruminal microbes; however, only 18:3 was hydrogenated to the same extent across all diets. In Exp. 2, 36 Angus x Gelbvieh heifers (260.0 +/- 6.0 kg initial BW) were individually fed C, O3, or O6 as mixed rations for 104 d. Diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous and provide ADG of .91 kg. Feed efficiency and ADG was greatest (P < .02; quadratic) for O3 heifers. Serum NEFA increased linearly (P = .02) and serum glucose (P = .02), cholesterol (P = .002), and GH (P = .04) showed a quadratic response to level of dietary soybean oil. Plasma proportions of 16:0, 16:1, 18:0, and 18:1 increased quadratically (P < .03), and 18:2 increased linearly (P < .001) from C to O6. In Exp. 3, 42 Angus x Gelbvieh heifers (288.7 +/- 6.6 kg initial BW) were divided into six pens (two pens/treatment) in a randomized complete block designed experiment. Rations were delivered as hay plus a top-dressed supplement (C, O3, or O6). Heifers fed O3 conceived 10 d earlier (quadratic; P = .06) than heifers fed C and O6. Other production estimates did not differ (P > or = .10) among dietary treatments. Inclusion of soybean oil at 3% of a forage-based diet increased total VFA, many blood metabolites, ADG, and feed efficiency, and it decreased time to conception. Adding soybean oil as 3% of a forage-based diet is an acceptable feeding strategy for developing beef heifers.  相似文献

A 3-yr study used 16 cows and their spring-born calves (yr 1) and 48 first-calf heifers (yr 2, n = 24; yr 3, n = 24) and their spring-born calves in a completely randomized design. All cows and heifers were Angus x Beefmaster, and calves were sired by Angus bulls. Cow-calf pairs were assigned randomly to one of two management systems: 1) an early-weaning system, in which steer and heifer calves were weaned at 108 d of age and fed a postweaning growing diet (EW), or 2) a normal weaning system, in which calves were weaned at 205 d without supplementation (NW). Before early weaning and within each management system, calves and their dams were maintained in two 1.4-ha, endophyte-infected tall fescue pastures for 35 d (yr 1) or 14 d (yr 2 and 3). Early-weaned calves and cow-calf pairs were then randomly allotted to 1.4-ha, endophyte-infected tall fescue pastures with two (yr 1) or three (yr 2 and 3) calves or cow-calf pairs per pasture (four pastures per management system). Cow weights and BCS changes and calf gains were measured from early to normal weaning. Dietary intakes and nutrient digestibilities by EW and NW calves were determined during two periods of yr 1 and three periods of yr 2 and 3. Total gains and BCS changes were greater (P < 0.01) for cows that produced EW calves in all years. Calf ADG from early to normal weaning did not differ (P = 0.32). Similar to ADG, BW of calves at normal weaning were not different (P = 0.11). Forage intake was greater (P < 0.01) by NW calves during Periods 2 and 3 of yr 1 and Periods 1 and 2 of yr 2 and 3; however, total DM and CP intakes were greater (P < 0.01) for EW calves in Periods 2 and 3 of each year. Intakes of NDF tended (P = 0.11) to be greater by EW calves across all years. Estimates of CP and NDF digestibilities were higher (P < 0.01) for EW calves during yr 1 and 2; however, all components of the diet consumed by NW calves in yr 3 were more digestible (P < 0.05) than those consumed by EW calves. These results show the condition of cows with EW calves was improved by early weaning and gains by calves weaned at 108 d to pasture plus a commercial grower diet were comparable to those by calves continuing to nurse dams until weaned at 205 d.  相似文献
