A nine months old Japanese domestic cat with a solitary bone cyst, which is a benign tumor-like lesion and is particularly uncommon in feline practice was referred. Radiographic examination revealed an expansive radiolucency in the distal metaphysis of the right ulna and pathologic fracture. The histological examination demonstrated immature osteogenesis consisting of osteoblasts surrounded by connective tissue. We applied drainage and instillation of steroid solution into the cystic cavity. Clinical signs, including lameness and pain, disappeared three weeks after the therapy started. Fourteen months after the therapy, the cystic lesion of bone was remodeling successfully without re-developing. We conclude that our procedure was useful treatment in this case.  相似文献

A 9-month-old male entire Doberman Pinscher presented with acute onset of severe cervical hyperesthesia after a fall. Neurological examination revealed a normal gait with low head carriage and severe cervical hyperesthesia. A CT scan of the cervical vertebral column revealed the presence of a comminuted fracture at the dorsomedial aspect of the right occipital condyle and sclerosis of the underlying bone. Medical management was initiated consisting of an external bandage, strict rest, and pain medication. Due to the lack of clinical improvement, the dog was euthanized 2 months after diagnosis. Histopathology of the lesion was compatible with a healing fracture.  相似文献

The radiological examination of bone lesions can be challenging, considering the complex superimposition of the 3D anatomy of a region on to a 2D image. This report describes the findings achievable with different diagnostic imaging modalities (radiography, arthrography, spiral computed tomography) and the correlation with the post mortem and histopathological findings in a horse with a fracture associated with an osseous cyst‐like lesion in the third phalanx. CT was highly superior to radiography to evaluate the spatial configuration and completeness of the fracture, relationship between the fracture and osseous cyst‐like lesion, architecture of the cyst, presence of its communication with the joint and secondary degenerative joint disease. In conclusion, CT represents an asset in these cases for an accurate prognosis and therapy.  相似文献

The most prevalent causes of death in racehorses are musculoskeletal injuries, causing ~83% of deaths within the racing industry in California and elsewhere. The vast majority of these injuries have preexisting lesions that predispose to fatal injury. A 4-y-old Thoroughbred colt suffered an acute suspensory apparatus failure, including biaxial proximal sesamoid bone fractures of the right front fetlock, causing loss of support of the fetlock joint and consequent fall with fractures of the cervical and sacral spine. Cervical fracture caused spinal cord damage that resulted in sudden death. A preexisting lesion in the medial proximal sesamoid bone likely predisposed to complete fracture of this bone and fetlock breakdown. Interestingly, a comparable osteopenic lesion was present in the intact medial proximal sesamoid bone of the left forelimb, which is consistent with bilateral repetitive overuse injury in racehorses. The morphologic features of the cervical and sacral spine fractures were compatible with acute injury; no evidence of preexisting lesions was seen. Most likely, these acute vertebral fractures occurred as a result of the horse falling. This case emphasizes the importance of performing a detailed autopsy in horses that suffer an appendicular musculoskeletal injury, particularly in fatal cases when the horse dies following a leg injury.  相似文献

A yearling Thoroughbred colt was admitted to the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine with severe, progressive lameness of the left forelimb. A centrally located expansile lytic lesion involving approximately 40% of the distal phalanx with a large associated vascular channel was identified by radiography. Increased vascular phase pooling, increased soft tissue phase uptake, and a photopenic area on bone phase images corresponding to the lytic lesion within the left distal phalanx were identified by vascular, soft tissue, and bone phases of a three phase bone scan, respectively. Contrast medium accumulation and disappearance in dilated vessels within the lesion was apparent angiographically. The colt was euthanized and the histologic diagnosis was hemangioma of the distal phalanx with a pathologic fracture.  相似文献

A subtrochanteric femoral fracture in a 5-month-old Doberman Pinscher was repaired by use of a 5-hole, 3.5-mm, double-hook plate. The double-hook plate afforded rigid 3-point fixation of the short proximal metaphyseal segment without impingement of the proximal femoral physis and allowed compression of the fracture fragments by placement of an interfragmentary screw through its pendulum hole. The fracture healed without complications, and the dog had a rapid return to function. Although designed for use in performing femoral osteotomies in dogs afflicted with hip dysplasia, the double-hook plate can be used to repair fractures with short proximal or distal segments.  相似文献

An 11‐year‐old Thoroughbred gelding was presented for lameness investigation following acute onset hindlimb lameness, which developed during a period of paddock turnout. Clinical examination revealed a swelling over the dorsolateral aspect of the pastern that was painful on digital palpation. Radiography of this area was consistent with an aggressive bone lesion involving both joint surfaces of the middle phalanx with pathological fracture and distal collapse of this bone. On this basis, the horse was subjected to euthanasia. Post mortem histopathological examination revealed presence of an osteosarcoma without involvement of the articular cartilage. This bone tumour is extremely rare in horses and has not been reported in this anatomical location.  相似文献

A 9-year-old male Beagle dog was presented with a history of regurgitation for more than a month. In radiographic examination of the esophagus, a space-occupying defect suggesting an intramural lesion was found in the caudal esophagus. At necropsy a diagnosis of a hematoma of the wall of the esophagus was made. Trauma was suggested as a possible etiology because the dog also had a fracture of the first rib on the same side as the esophageal hematoma.  相似文献

A 6-month-old female Yorkshire Terrier was examined because of acute left forelimb lameness secondary to a Salter-Harris type IV fracture of the lateral condyle of the humerus. Radiography revealed an eccentric, osteolytic lesion in the distal humeral metaphysis associated with a pathologic fracture. The limb was amputated, and the dog recovered. Microscopic examination revealed an extensive zone of hemorrhage and dilated coalescent spaces, which were filled with blood. Hemosiderin-laden macrophages and multinucleated giant cells were observed throughout the stroma. On the basis of clinical, radiographic, and histologic examinations, a diagnosis of aneurysmal bone cyst was made. Aneurysmal bone cysts generally have been detected in 11- to 13-year-old, medium- to large-sized dogs. They can develop secondary to malignant processes.  相似文献

A two-year old neuteral/male cougar (Felis concolor) was presented because of abnormal eating habits and an irregularity of the mandibular right first molar that was noted by the caretaker. Oral examination and dental radiographs showed a lesion consistent with odontoclastic resorption of the mandibular right first molar, and a crown fracture and dilacerated root of the maxillary right first incisor. Exodontic therapy was performed on both teeth. The caretaker reported no problems associated with the patient's oral cavity 10-months following treatment.  相似文献

Reasons for performing study: Veterinarians have observed a putative change in the location of humeral stress remodelling in Thoroughbred racehorses with change from dirt to synthetic racetrack surfaces. Objectives: To determine whether the location and severity of humeral stress remodelling differs between Thoroughbred racehorses exercising on dirt and synthetic racetrack surfaces, the potential significance of different locations of stress remodelling, and the potential usefulness of scintigraphy for prevention of complete humeral fracture. Methods: Scintigraphic images of humeri from 841 Thoroughbred racehorses at 3 racetracks during 2 years before and after conversion from dirt to synthetic surfaces were evaluated for location and severity of lesions. The effects of surface on lesion distributions were examined using Chi‐square or Fisher's exact tests. Archived fractured humeri were examined to determine the location and severity of stress remodelling associated with complete fracture. Databases were queried to determine whether racehorses with scintigraphic lesions suffered humeral fracture and whether racehorses with a complete humeral fracture had had a scintigraphic examination. Results: Horses at synthetic racetracks had a greater proportion of distal humeral lesions, whereas horses at dirt racetracks had a greater proportion of caudoproximal lesions (P<0.001). Proximal lesions were more likely to be severe than distal lesions (P<0.001). Most complete fractures were associated with caudoproximal lesions, which were more often severe than distal lesions (P = 0.002). None of the horses with a scintigraphic lesion had a complete humeral fracture. None of the horses with a complete humeral fracture underwent scintigraphic examination. Conclusions: Race surface affected humeral scintigraphic lesion location and hence the location of stress remodelling. Lesion severity was associated with lesion location. Complete humeral fracture was associated with caudoproximal stress remodelling and lack of scintigraphic examination. Potential relevance: Risk for complete humeral fracture may be lower on synthetic surfaces than on dirt surfaces, and, by inference, for horses examined using scintigraphy.  相似文献

A 3‐year‐old filly was presented for severe lameness referable to the left front fetlock joint. Radiographs confirmed an osseous cyst‐like lesion and synovial fluid cytology ruled out sepsis. The filly responded poorly to medical management and was subsequently subjected to euthanasia. Post mortem examination confirmed an impact fracture of the proximal phalanx, previously undiagnosed in the horse.  相似文献

A three-year-old male working border collie with an infected femoral nonunion fracture was managed in a two-stage procedure involving debridement and omentalisation, followed by stabilisation with a bone plate and an autogenous cancellous bone graft. Osseous union was documented radiographically 16 weeks after surgery. Telephone follow-up one year later revealed the dog had returned to full working function without evidence of lameness. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first clinical case described in the veterinary literature using omentalisation as an adjunct to the management of an infected, biologically inactive nonunion fracture.  相似文献

The presentation, diagnostic evaluation, treatment, and 5 years follow-up of a 12-year-old Arabian-Saddlebred cross gelding with neck pain and stiffness, attributable to a fracture of the third cervical vertebrae (C3), is described. Initial cervical spinal radiographs revealed a concave defect in the ventral aspect of the cranial end plate of C3. However, both this finding and ultrasonographic imaging of the area were inconclusive for a fracture. Nuclear scintigraphy revealed that the lesion was metabolically active, prompting computed tomographic imaging that revealed a fracture of C3. Sequential radiographs documented progressive fusion of C2-C3 and no neurological deficits developed over the 5 years after the injury. Cervical vertebral injuries in horses can lead to various clinical signs including ataxia, weakness, and neck stiffness or pain. Diagnosis with cervical radiographs alone can be challenging and, in some cases as the horse in this report, multiple imaging modalities may be required to establish a definitive diagnosis. Horses without neurological signs may recover successfully with conservative medical management, which was performed in this case.  相似文献

A 4-year-old female Miniature Dachshund was referred with a chief complaint of right periorbital swelling that had not responded to antibiotic therapy. Ultrasonography and fine-needle aspiration revealed that the periorbital lesion had a cystic structure without any inflammatory or neoplastic cells. Computed tomography (CT) showed that the cyst occupied a defect in the periorbital maxillary, lacrimal, and frontal bones and had invaded the nasal cavity. The lesion was histologically suspected by incisional biopsy as an epithelial cyst.  相似文献

A mature female domestic shorthaired cat with obstipation as a result of pelvic canal narrowing due to a pelvic fracture malunion was treated by triple pelvic osteotomy to widen the canal. The right hemipelvis was moved laterally and a modified bone plate was applied to the right ilium. A mild lick dermatitis occurred over the dorsum of the hind paw seven days postoperatively but resolved without treatment. The cat made an uneventful recovery without recurrence of the obstipation.  相似文献

A horse with a suspected injury of the distal phalanx was examined using radiography at day two and 19 after the onset of the lameness, with no definite diagnosis. Using computed tomography an incomplete fracture of the lateral wing of the distal phalanx was diagnosed at day 25. Based on computed tomography it was determined that the fracture probably did not enter the joint or involve the palmar cortex throughout its length which were of prognostic importance. The day following the CT examination a new oblique radiographic projection was made. In this radiography which was based on, and never would have been attempted without, the information about the geometric pattern of the fracture achieved by CT examination, a radiolucent area indicative of a wing fracture was seen. This report emphasizes the value of computed tomography in diagnosing a geometric complicated nonarticular oblique fracture of the palmar process of the pedal bone in a horse.  相似文献

A one-year-old neutered male cat was referred for a grade IIIA open radius and ulna fracture. The mid-diaphyseal radial and ulnar fractures were associated with lateral radio-humeral and radio-ulnar dislocations. From these abnormalities, a diagnosis of type IV Monteggia fracture was made. The annular ligament was found to be intact on examination and the radial head was correctly positioned and stable after fracture reduction and plate fixation. Eighteen months postoperatively, the cat did not exhibit any signs of lameness or any signs of pain on palpation and mobilisation. Signs of mild osteoarthritis were present on radiographs. Type IV Monteggia fractures are very rare in animals. The combination of a radial head dislocation with an intact annular ligament is uncommon. This pattern allowed a single reconstruction with two plates without a radio-ulnar screw.  相似文献

A 6-week-old female Simmental calf was evaluated for acute non-ambulatory tetraparesis. Physical and laboratory examinations revealed no clinically relevant abnormalities. Neurological findings were consistent with acute, progressive and painful cervical myelopathy. Radiographs displayed a fractured odontoid process (dens axis) and vertebral step misalignment at the fracture site. A traumatic origin was suspected. Advanced diagnostic imaging was considered to allow better planning of potential surgical stabilisation and to exclude any additional lesions of the cervical vertebral column. However, during trailer transportation to the advanced diagnostic imaging and surgery site, the calf deteriorated neurologically and was humanely euthanised. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) were performed immediately post-mortem for scientific reasons. The MRI examination reflected the radiographic findings and confirmed severe spinal cord compression at the fracture site. In addition, a T2W-hyperintense signal change within the paravertebral soft tissue dorsal to the fracture site was indicative of a traumatic event. CT identified the fracture site at the synchondrosis between the odontoid process and the body of the axis, and this finding was confirmed by post-mortem examination. Advanced diagnostic imaging and post-mortem examination did not identify any other cervical lesion. In summary, this calf was diagnosed with a traumatic odontoid process synchondrosis fracture, which has not been reported previously in calves but presents a challenging and well-known fracture type in young children. This case report indicates that the odontoid process synchondrosis is a potential predisposed injury site and that traumatic odontoid process synchondrosis fractures should be considered as a potential differential in calves with acute cervical pain and/or signs of a cervical myelopathy.  相似文献
