Methylene Blue Adsorption onto Water Hyacinth: Batch and Column Study   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The adsorption of methylene blue cationic dye by water hyacinth root was studied in a batch system. The experimental data isotherms were analyzed using the Langmuir and Freundlich equations. The monolayer adsorption capacity for methylene blue dye was found as 0.187?kg?kg?1. Three kinetic models (the pseudo-first order, the pseudo-second order, and the unified approach) were used to calculate the adsorption rate constants. The kinetic data along with equilibrium constants (maximum monolayer capacity and Langmuir constant) fitted well with unified approach model for different initial concentrations, and the rate constants were determined. Laboratory column experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of water hyacinth root for methylene blue sorption under dynamic flow conditions. Breakthrough curves were plotted for the methylene blue adsorption on the adsorbent using continuous flow column operation by varying the bed height (0.06?C0.12?m) and the feed concentrations (0.1?C0.2?kg?m?3). Different column design parameters, such as depth of exchange zone, adsorption rate, and adsorption capacity, were calculated. At the end, an attempt has also been made to model the data generated from column studies using the empirical relationship based on Bohart?CAdams model.  相似文献

Sulphuric acid-modified bagasse has been used as low-cost adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB) dye from aqueous solution. In order to remove organic compounds that contribute to chemical oxygen demand (COD), pretreatment with thorough washing of adsorbent using boiling distilled water was performed instead of conventional washing using distilled water at room temperature only. This has resulted in the highest efficiency of color removal of 99.45% and COD reduction of 99.36% for MB dye solution at pH 9. Effects of initial pH, dye concentration, adsorbent dosage, temperature, and contact time have been studied. The adsorption of MB dye was pH dependent. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were tested on the adsorption data. The kinetic experimental data were analyzed using pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and the intraparticle diffusion model in order to examine the adsorption mechanisms. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm as well as the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The process was found to be endothermic in nature.  相似文献

The removal of bromophenol blue dye (BPB), from aqueous solutions, by biosorption on a non-living biomass of Rhizopus stolonifer was investigated in a batch system. Pretreatment of the biomass with NaOH was found to be the most effective means to enhance the biosorption of BPB. The fungal biomass exhibited the highest dye sorption capacity at pH 2 and the uptake process followed the pseudo-second order reaction model. The equilibrium sorption capacity of the biomass increased as the initial dye concentration increased, and the maximum uptake value was estimated at 1111 mg/g according to Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorbed dye was easily desorbed from a fungal biomass with 0.1 M NaOH solution and the regenerated biomass could be reused for other biosorption essays with similar performances.  相似文献

This paper presents a study on the batch adsorption of a basic dye, methylene blue (MB), from aqueous solution onto ground hazelnut shell in order to explore its potential use as a low-cost adsorbent for wastewater dye removal. A contact time of 24 h was required to reach equilibrium. Batch adsorption studies were carried out by varying initial dye concentration, initial pH value (3–9), ionic strength (0.0–0.1 mol L?1), particle size (0–200 μm) and temperature (25–55°C). The extent of the MB removal increased with increasing in the solution pH, ionic strength and temperature but decreased with increase in the particle size. The equilibrium data were analysed using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The characteristic parameters for each isotherm were determined. By considering the experimental results and adsorption models applied in this study, it can be concluded that equilibrium data were represented well by Langmuir isotherm equation. The maximum adsorption capacities for MB were 2.14?×?10?4, 2.17?×?10?4, 2.20?×?10?4 and 2.31?×?10?4 mol g?1 at temperature of 25, 35, 45 and 55°C, respectively. Adsorption heat revealed that the adsorption of MB is endothermic in nature. The results indicated that the MB strongly interacts with the hazelnut shell powder.  相似文献

The adsorption capacity of pine tree leaves for removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution was investigated in a batch system. The effects of the process variables, such as solution pH, contact time, initial dye concentration, amount of adsorbent, agitation speed, salt concentration, and system temperature on the adsorption process were studied. The extent of methylene blue dye adsorption increased with increase in initial dye concentration, contact time, agitation speed, temperature, and solution pH but decreased with increased in amount of adsorbent and salt concentration. Equilibrium data were best described by both Langmuir isotherm and Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of pine tree leaves biomass was 126.58?mg/g at 30?°C. The value of separation factor, R L , from Langmuir equation and Freundlich constant, n, both give an indication of favorable adsorption. The intrapartical diffusion model, liquid film diffusion model, double exponential model, pseudo-first and second order model were used to describe the kinetic and mechanism of adsorption process. A single stage bath adsorber design for the MB adsorption onto pine tree leaves has been presented based on the Langmuir isotherm model equation. Thermodynamic parameters such as standard Gibbs free energy (??G 0), standard enthalpy (??H 0), and standard entropy (??S 0) were calculated.  相似文献

The kinetics of the adsorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+ by sodium tetraborate (NTB)-modified kaolinite clay adsorbent was studied. A one-stage and two-stage optimization of equilibrium data were carried out using the Langmuir and time-dependent Langmuir models, respectively. Increasing temperature was found to increase the pseudo-second order kinetic rate constant and kinetic data for Pb2+ adsorption were found to fit well with the pseudo-second order kinetic model (PSOM) while that for Cd2+ were found to show very good fit to the modified pseudo-first order kinetic model (MPFOM). Binary solutions of Pb2+ and Cd2+ reduced the adsorption capacity of the modified adsorbent for either metal ion with increased initial sorption rate due to competition of metal ions for available adsorption sites. The use of NTB-modified kaolinite clay adsorbent reduces by approximately 72.2% and 96.3% the amount of kaolinite clay needed to adsorb Pb2+ and Cd2+ from wastewater solutions. From the two-stage batch adsorber design study, the minimum operating time to determine a specified amount of Pb2+ and Cd2+ removal was developed. The two-stage batch adsorption process predicted less than half the minimum contact time to reach equilibrium in the one-stage process for the adsorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+ by NTB-modified kaolinite clay adsorbent and requires 0.05 times the mass of the adsorbent for the single-stage batch adsorption at the same operating conditions.  相似文献

Utilization of industrial solid wastes for the treatment of wastewater from another industry could help environmental pollution abatement, in solving both solid waste disposal as well as liquid waste problems. Red mud (RM) is a waste product in the production of alumina and it poses serious pollution hazard. The present paper focuses on the possibility of utilization of RM as an adsorbent for removal of Remazol Brilliant Blue dye (RBB), a reactive dye from dye-contaminated water. Adsorption of RBB, from dye-contaminated water was studied by adsorption on powdered sulfuric acid-treated RM. The effect of initial dye concentration, contact time, initial pH, and adsorbent dosage were studied. Langmuir isotherm model has been found to represent the equilibrium data for RBB?CRM adsorption system better than Freundlich model. The adsorption capacity of RM was found to be 27.8?mg dye/g of adsorbent at 40?°C. Thermodynamic analysis showed that adsorption of RBB on acid-treated RM is an endothermic reaction with ?H 0 of 28.38?kJ/mol. The adsorption kinetics is represented by second-order kinetic model and the kinetic constant was estimated to be 0.0105?±?0.005?g/mg?min. Validity of intra-particle diffusion kinetic model suggested that among the mass transfer processes during the dye adsorption process, pore diffusion is the controlling step and not the film diffusion. The process can serve dual purposes of utilization of an industrial solid waste and the treatment of liquid waste.  相似文献

The effects of various experimental parameters on adsorption of Zn2+ metal ion from its aqueous solution by castor seed hull and also by activated carbon have been investigated using batch adsorption experiments. It has been found that the amount of zinc adsorbed per unit mass of the hull increases with the initial metal ion concentration, contact time, solution pH and with the amount of the adsorbent. Kinetic experiments clearly indicate that adsorption of zinc on both castor hull and activated carbon is a three-step process??a rapid adsorption of the metal ion, a transition phase, and an almost flat plateau. This has also been confirmed by the intraparticle diffusion model. It has also been found that the zinc adsorption process followed pseudo-second order kinetics. The kinetic parameters including rate constants have been determined at different initial metal ion concentration, pH, amount, and type of adsorbent, respectively. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models have been used to interpret the equilibrium adsorption data. The Langmuir model yields better correlation coefficients. The monolayer adsorption capacities (q m ) of castor hull and activated carbon have been compared with those for others reported in the literature. The value of separation factor (R L ) derived from the Langmuir model gives an indication of favorable adsorption. Finally, from comparative studies, it has been found that castor hull is a potentially attractive adsorbent as compared to commercial activated carbon for the removal of zinc from aqueus effluents.  相似文献

Cuprous oxide-modified diatomite waste (Cu2O-DW) as a low-cost and effective adsorbent was prepared via a hydrothermal route combined with acid-alkali treatment. The microstructure and surface properties of the obtained Cu2O-DW composite was characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The adsorption behaviors of three different types of dyes such as cationic dye methyl blue (MB), anionic dye acid orange (AO), and reactive dye reactive yellow (RY) onto the as-prepared Cu2O-DW were investigated. Several experimental parameters such as contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial dye concentration, and initial pH values were systematically estimated. The experimental results indicated that as-prepared Cu2O-DW have a better adsorption performance for MB, AO, and RY. Moreover, the kinetic and isotherm models were also used to account for the adsorption mechanism of dye molecules onto Cu2O-DW. The results demonstrated that three different dyes are all fitted well with pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Additionally, the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm model is more suitable for describing the adsorption process of RY and MB on the as-prepared Cu2O-DW, respectively, and the AO adsorption is propitious to the D-R isotherm model. The value of adsorption energy (E?<?8 kJ mol?1) confirmed that the physical adsorption is dominator during the adsorption process. The findings of the study demonstrated that the synthesized Cu2O-DW composite can be a promising adsorbent for the removal of organic dyes from wastewater and it provided a sustainable development method for cycling the diatomite waste from the brewery.  相似文献

The sorption behavior of dye remazol yellow using surfactant modified zeolitic rock and a carbonaceous material obtained by pyrolysis of sewage sludge and treated with HCl (1.0%) solution was determined. The kinetic and sorption isotherms experimental results were best adjusted to the pseudo-second order model and to the Langmuir–Freundlich isotherm model which indicate that the sorption process is chemisorption on heterogeneous materials. Remazol yellow could be removed from the saturated modified zeolitic material by different processes, unfortunately, the surfactant was removed together with the dye, the best results were found using Fenton’s reagent. Thermal treatment was the best method found to remove the dye from the carbonaceous material.

This study developed a new adsorbent, specifically activated carbon-loaded silver nanoparticles (AgNPs-AC) by coating the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto activated carbon (AC). The obtained AgNPs-AC were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The ability of AgNPs-AC to remove methylene blue (MB) was evaluated using different experimental factors, these being pH solution, contact time, adsorbent dose, and initial MB concentration. Results indicated that the highest adsorption capacity of MB onto AgNPs-AC was obtained when the AC was loaded onto AgNPs at the impregnation ratio of 0.5% w/w for AC and AgNPs. The best conditions in which AgNPs-AC could remove MB were as follows: pH 10, contact time lasting 120 min, and adsorbent dose being 250 mg/25 mL solution. In this scenario, the maximum adsorption capacity of MB onto AgNPs-AC was 172.22 mg/g. The adsorption isothermal equilibrium was well described by the Langmuir, Freundlich and Sips models. The Sips equations had the highest correlation coefficient value (R2?=?0.935). The pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models agree well with the dynamic behavior of the adsorption of dye MB on AgNPs-AC.  相似文献

In this study, activated red mud was used to develop an effective adsorbent in order to remove a toxic azo dye (tartrazine E102) from aqueous solutions. To increase the adsorption capacity, the red mud was activated by acid-heat treatment using 20 wt.% HCl (RM-HCl). To establish the optimum operating parameters, the influence of pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, initial dye concentration, and stirring rate was investigated. The adsorption equilibrium was studied using Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Temkin isotherm models, and the characteristic parameters for each adsorption isotherm were determined. The kinetics of the adsorption process was analyzed by means of pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. The maximum removal efficiency obtained under optimum conditions was 84.72%. These results were in accordance with the isotherm and kinetic data. The results suggested that tartrazine adsorption process follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and also that fits Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity was 136.98 mg/g.  相似文献

The kinetics and mechanism of methylene blue adsorption onto raw pine cone biomass (Pinus radiata) was investigated under various physicochemical parameters. The extent of the methylene blue dye adsorption increased with increases in initial dye concentration, contact time and solution pH but decreases with the amount of adsorbent, salt concentration and temperature of the system. Overall the kinetic studies showed that the methylene blue adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics among various kinetic models tested. The different kinetic parameters including rate constant, half-adsorption time and diffusion coefficient are determined at different physicochemical conditions. Equilibrium data were best represented by Langmuir isotherm among Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of pine cone biomass was 109.89 mg/g at 30°C. The value of separation factor, R L, from Langmuir equation and Freundlich constant, n, both give an indication of favourable adsorption. Thermodynamic parameters such as standard Gibbs free energy (?G 0), standard enthalpy (?H 0), standard entropy (?S 0) and the activation energy (A) were calculated. A single-stage batch absorber design for the methylene blue adsorption onto pine cone biomass has been presented based on the Langmuir isotherm model equation.  相似文献

Poly(acrylamide-acrylic acid-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) P(AAm-AA-DMAEMA) resin was prepared by the template copolymerization. PAAm was used as a template for the copolymerization of DMAEMA and AA in aqueous solution using gamma rays. The adsorption of indigo carmine and eriochrome black-T anionic dyes from aqueous media on P(AAm-AA-DMAEMA) has been investigated. The adsorption behavior of this resin has been studied under different adsorption conditions: dye concentrations (50?C500 mg l?1), contact times, temperature (30?C55°C), and pH values (2?C7). The amount of dye adsorbed increased with increasing resin content, but it had a little change with temperature and decreased slightly with increasing pH. Adsorption data of the samples were modeled by the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic equations in order to investigate dye adsorption mechanism. It was found that the adsorption kinetics of the resin followed a pseudo-second-order model with rate constant (k 2) of 2.5?×?10?3 and 1.8?×?10?2 g (mg?1 min?1) for indigo carmine and eriochrome black-T, respectively. Equilibrium isotherms were analyzed using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. It was seen that the Freundlich model fits the adsorption data better than the Langmuir model.  相似文献

In this study, the efficiency of chitin and chitosan toward the removal of ethylbenzene from aqueous solutions was investigated. Batch adsorption experiments of ethylbenzene-contaminated waters (5?C200 mg/L) were carried out to evaluate the removal performance. Ethylbenzene uptake was determined from the changes in concentration, as the residual concentration was measured by gas chromatography with mass spectroscopy. The results indicated that the adsorption of ethylbenzene by chitin and chitosan were in agreement with the Langmuir isotherm, for two parameters model, and Redlich?CPeterson isotherm, for three parameters model. A maximum removal percentage of 65% of ethylbenzene can be achieved using chitosan as adsorbent material. The adsorption capacity of ethylbenzene followed the order chitosan?>?chitin. The pseudo-second order rate model described best the adsorption kinetics of ethylbenzene for the two selected adsorbents. The kinetic studies also revealed that the pore diffusion is not the only rate controlling step in the removal of ethylbenzene. Overall, the study demonstrated that chitosan is a potential adsorbent for the removal of ethylbenzene at concentrations as high as 200 mg/L.  相似文献

Co(II) adsorption on high-purity amorphous Fe?CMn binary oxide adsorbent was investigated. The Co(II) adsorption behavior of this synthetic material was studied and discussed as a function of contact time, pH and initial concentration. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were applied to fit the Co(II) adsorption data on Fe?CMn binary oxide with mesoporous particles of irregular surface morphology and a specific surface area of 201.8?m2?g?1 with a maximum capacity of 32.25?mg?g?1. Various kinetic models applied to the adsorption rate data of the Co(II) ion were evaluated. The results show that the pseudo-second order and the intra-particle mass transfer diffusion models correlated best with the experimental rate data. The adsorption activation energy was found to be 9.07?kJ?mol?1 indicating that it corresponds to a physical adsorption. The evaluated thermodynamics parameters of the adsorption values indicated the endothermic and spontaneous nature of the adsorption. The results obtained confirmed that Fe?CMn binary oxide had the potential to be utilized as a low-cost and relatively effective adsorbent for Co(II) removal from wastewater.  相似文献

The batch sorption experiments were carried out using a novel adsorbent, freshwater macrophyte alligator weed, for the removal of basic dye malachite green from aqueous solution. Effects of process parameters such as initial solution pH, contact time, adsorbent concentration, particle size, and ion strength were investigated. The adsorbent was characterized by FT-IR. The adsorption of malachite green by alligator weed was solution pH dependent. The adsorption reached equilibrium at 240 min for two particle size fractions. The pseudo-first-order equation, Ritchie second-order equation, and intraparticle diffusion models were tested. The results showed that adsorption of malachite green onto alligator weed followed the Ritchie second-order equation very well and the intraparticle diffusion played important roles in the adsorption process. The Langmuir and Freundlich equations were applied to the data related to the adsorption isotherms and the observed maximum adsorption capacity (q max) was 185.54 mg g?1 at 20°C according to the Langmuir model. The effects of particle size, adsorbent concentration, and ionic strength on the malachite green adsorption were very marked. The alligator weed could serve as low-cost adsorbents for removing malachite green from aqueous solution.  相似文献

Studies on the removal of Congo Red (CR) by adsorption on variousactivated carbons [commercial activated carbon (CAC) and indigenously prepared activated carbons(IPACs) from raw materialslike bamboo dust, coconut shell, groundnut shell, rice husk, and straw] have beencarried out with an aim to obtain information on treating effluents from dye/textile industries. The effect of various experimental parameters has been investigated by following batchadsorption technique at 30 ± 1 °C. The percentage removal of dye increased with the decrease in initial concentration, initial pH of the dye solution and particle size of IPACs and increase in contact time and dose of adsorbent. Adsorption data were modelled with the Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherms and first order kinetic equations such asNatarajan and Khalaf, Lagergren, Bhattacharya and Venkbachar equations and intra-particle diffusion model and the models werefound to be applicable. The kinetics of adsorption is observed tobe first order with intra-particle diffusion as one of the rate determining steps. Removal of dye using IPACs is found to be favourable and hence, IPACs could be considered as alternatives to CAC for the treatment of textile effluents, especially for theremoval of dye(s).  相似文献

The removal of 4-chlorophenol from aqueous solutions by both a Mexican clinoptilolite-heulandite zeolitic rock and the modified zeolitic material with the surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMABr), using batch and packed-bed (column) configurations, was investigated. The unmodified zeolitic rock did not show any adsorption of 4-chlorophenol. The effects of pH, contact time and concentration of 4-chlorophenol on the adsorption process by the surfactant modified material were examined. The sorption of 4-chlorophenol was not affected by the pH range from 4 to 9.5. 4-chlorophenol retention reached equilibrium in about 18 h and the rate of 4-chorophenol adsorption by the modified material was faster in the first 10 h than later. The experimental data were treated with the models: pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, fractional power and Elovich models. Although, the last three gave correlation coefficients higher than 0.96, the pseudo-second order model was the best to describe the reaction rate. The experimental data follow a linear isotherm which is characteristic for sorption of organic solutes by the partition mechanism. The Bed Depth-Service Time Model was applied to the sorption results in order to model the column operation. The results showed that the surfactant modified zeolitic rock could be considered as a potential adsorbent for 4-chlorophenol removal from aqueous solutions.  相似文献
