ABSTRACT

Our objective was to produce a unique feed ingredient from underutilized walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) and pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) testes. Protein content in meals from both species (72% and 80%, respectively) were above the values found in high quality herring meals (~70%), but both were poor in some essential amino acids, e.g., methionine. Additionally, both were good sources of the amino acid taurine (1.7 and 2.2% of meal, respectively). Pollock meal was very rich in phospholipids (82% of total lipids) and in DHA (28 mg/g meal) and EPA (18 mg/g meal), indicating potential as an ingredient in larval starter diets. The purine contents in both pollock and salmon testes meals were more than 10 times the concentrations found in other fish byproducts or commercial fishmeals. The high concentrations of purines found in these testes, especially in the salmon meal, make it an ideal candidate for an immune system stimulant when added to dietary formulations.  相似文献

Two successive experiments were conducted in order to assess plasma free amino acid (FAA) profiles as a method for evaluating protein quality of fish feeds for Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar (L.). In experiment 1, the importance of meal size and inter‐fish variation was assessed by using dorsal aorta cannulated fish and diets that contained different sources of fishmeal (menhaden versus herring) which in the case of herring, had been dried at either 70 or 100 °C. In experiment 2, an attempt was made to mimic a production situation by comparing the FAA profiles in salmon fed diets containing two commercially available fishmeals that had been produced in accordance with industrial standards (Norse‐LT94® and NorSeaMink®; Norsildmel AL, Fyllingsdalen, Norway). FAA profiles in plasma 6 h after feeding were compared with feed true protein digestibility as determined in mink. Cannulated fish, held in individual tanks, were hand‐fed twice daily to pellet rejection (satiety) and daily records of the actual rations consumed were maintained. A total of 24 different amino acids and other amino‐containing compounds were detected using high‐pressure liquid chromatography. Morning and evening meal size showed significant correlations. Meal size had a significant effect on blood levels of the majority of essential free amino acids (EAA) as well as the total sum of FAA (TFAA). In experiment 1, a marked inter‐individual effect was found, possibly because of incipient sexual maturation. FAA profiles were therefore corrected for meal size by linear regression while repeated sampling via the permanently implanted cannula allowed paired comparisons of the different test diets, minimizing inter‐individual variation. Significant differences in plasma FAA profile, EAA and TFAA were detected between fish fed all diets in both experiments. The preceding parameters for fish ingesting each feed were directly related to their respective mink protein digestibility in experiment 1, but not in experiment 2. Our results show that dietary protein quality can be differentiated by the aforementioned protocol, and by using fish with a low metabolic rate feed qualities could be ranked correctly as in experiment 1.  相似文献

Abstract

As a consequence of the BSE crisis in Europe, the components of meal produced from fish or warm-blooded animals are under stricter control. PCR-based techniques for species identification of fish meal have been developed and applied to meals produced from a single species each, including herring, capelin, anchovy, horse mackerel and blue whiting. DNA was extracted by means of the cationic detergent cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and a region of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene was amplified using universal primers. The amplicon was further characterized by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis. A number of fish meals could be differentiated due to their species-specific DNA patterns.  相似文献

The nutritional quality of 13 commercial fish meals (10 from pollock, two from salmon, and one from cod) made from by-products of the Alaska fish processing industry was determined in diets for the marine fish Pacific threadfin Polydactylus sexfilis . Pelleted feeds were manufactured containing these meals as complete replacement of a low-temperature processed Norwegian fish meal (control). These feeds were fed to triplicate tanks of fish at the facilities of the Oceanic Institute, Hawaii for a period of 9 wk. At the end of the trial, the final weight, feed efficiency, protein efficiency ratio and survival data were subjected to ANOVA procedures. The performance parameters of the fish fed the white fish meals (pollock and cod) were not significantly different from the control. Of the two salmon meals, one promoted good growth and efficiency and one did not. It is concluded that the nutritional quality of Alaska white (pollock and cod) fish meals is equivalent to that of the low-temperature Norwegian fish meal and are of suitable quality for inclusion in commercial feeds for Pacific threadfin.  相似文献

The effects of partial replacement of fish meal (FM) with meal made from northern krill (Thysanoessa inermis), Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) or Arctic amphipod (Themsto libellula) as protein source in the diets for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) and Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus L.) on growth, feed conversion, macro‐nutrient utilization, muscle chemical composition and fish welfare were studied. Six experimental diets were prepared using a low‐temperature FM diet as control. The other diets included northern krill where 20, 40 or 60% of the dietary FM protein was replaced with protein from northern krill, and two diets where the FM protein was replaced with protein from Antarctic krill or Arctic amphipod at 40% protein replacement level. All diets were iso‐nitrogenous and iso‐caloric. Atlantic salmon grew from 410 g to approximately 1500 g during the 160 day experiment, and Atlantic halibut grew from 345 g to 500–600 g during the 150 day experiment. Inclusion of krill in the diets enhanced specific growth rate in salmon, especially during the first 100 days (P < 0.01), and in a dose–response manner in halibut for over the 150 day feeding period (P < 0.05). Feed conversion ratio did not differ between dietary treatments, and no difference was found in dry matter digestibility, protein digestibility and fish muscle composition. Good growth rates, blood parameters within normal ranges and low mortalities in all experimental treatments indicted that fish health was not affected either Atlantic salmon or Atlantic halibut fed the various zooplankton diets.  相似文献

This study surveyed conditions in the gills of wild marine fish in Tasmania to determine potential interactions between wild and cultured fish. Wild marine fish of 12 species were captured from three Atlantic salmon farm sites and three reference sites around Tasmania. The survey concentrated on three species, red cod, Pseudophycis bachus, sand flathead, Platycephalus bassensis, and jack mackerel, Trachurus declivus. Seventy-six per cent of salmon pens contained wild fish species. The number of species found in a pen ranged from one to nine and the number of individuals ranged from one to 23. Trichodinids were prevalent and occurred on seven of the 13 species examined. Trichodina occurred on the gills of all but one specimen of red cod. Monogenean gill flukes were observed on all three major species sampled and were abundant on sand flathead. Other parasites and conditions observed in the survey included metacercariae of digenean trematodes, epitheliocystis and cysts of unknown origin. Infestations of trichodinids on red cod and monogenean gill flukes on sand flathead were significantly more intense at farm sites than at reference sites. Atlantic salmon sampled at the same time from the farms were only affected by amoebic gill disease and isopods.  相似文献

Studies were conducted with Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua (L.), to determine the apparent digestibility coefficients (ADCs) of protein and energy and the digestible energy (DE) content in feed ingredients widely available in Canada. We also tested the assumption of “independency” used in digestibility studies. The feed ingredients included two fish meals (herring, anchovy), three crustacean by-product meals (whole krill, crab, shrimp), two animal by-product meals (poultry by-product, hydrolyzed feather), six oilseed meals (soybean, soy protein concentrate, soy protein isolate, canola, canola protein concentrate, flaxseed), two pulse meals (white lupin, pea protein concentrate) and two cereal grain meals (corn gluten, wheat gluten). Protein ADCs were high for wheat gluten meal (99.9%), soy protein concentrate (98.6%), soy protein isolate (97.4%), whole krill meal (96.3%), herring meal (93.3%), soybean meal (92.3%), anchovy meal (92.2%), pea protein concentrate (89.8%), white lupin meal (89.7%), crab meal (89.4%), canola protein concentrate (88.8%) and corn gluten meal (86.3%); mid-range for poultry by-product meal (80.2%) and canola meal (76.0%); and low for shrimp meal (66.7%), hydrolyzed feather meal (62.4%) and flaxseed meal (50.2-55.0%). Energy ADC was high for whole krill meal (96.3%), wheat gluten meal (95.4%), soy protein concentrate (94.9%), herring meal (92.8%), soy protein isolate (92.1%), soybean meal (88.1%) and anchovy meal (86.4%); mid-range for canola protein concentrate (83.3%), corn gluten meal (82.7%), crab meal (82.4%), pea protein concentrate (76.7%) and white lupin meal (75.3%); and low for poultry by-product meal (71.0%), canola meal (60.6%), hydrolyzed feather meal (58.9%), shrimp meal (41.4%) and flaxseed meal (21.2-37.4%). From the protein ADC data, results clearly showed that the basal diet and test feed ingredients were digested independently of one another in nearly all cases, the only exceptions being for those diets containing test ingredients of very high (> 99%, wheat gluten) or very low (< 67%, hydrolyzed feather and flaxseed) protein ADCs. In the case of DE, the basal diet and test feed ingredients were digested independently in all test diets without exception.  相似文献

Alternative protein sources for aquafeeds need to be indentified in order to increase the efficiency of production. Many studies have examined terrestrial plant meals/protein concentrates as alternatives. Recently the focus has turned to aquatic protists and plants as well as by‐products from other industries, such as breweries. Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, and Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, were fed diets containing canola meal, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, soy protein concentrate, barley protein concentrate, and solar dried algae included at 30% of the test diet. Barley protein concentrate had the highest apparent protein digestibility values for both species (96.3% for Atlantic salmon and 85.1% for Arctic charr), followed by corn gluten meal. Algae had the highest organic matter digestibility value for arctic charr (80.1%) while corn gluten meal had the highest organic matter digestibility value for Atlantic salmon (88.4%). Algae had a high energy apparent digestibility coefficient (82.4 salmon, 82.7 charr) along with corn gluten meal (78.5 salmon, 82.7 charr) for both species. In general, Atlantic salmon had higher apparent digestibility coefficients compared to Arctic charr for most of the tested ingredients. Both corn gluten and barley protein concentrate appear good candidates as alternative protein sources with both species.  相似文献

In the marine environment, organisms from lower trophic levels seem as a good alternative to the traditional meal and oil sources. In the present study, meals were produced from Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), Arctic krill (Thysanoessa inermis) and the Arctic amphipod Themisto libellula. Diets were then prepared for Atlantic salmon and Atlantic cod where up to 100% of the fish meal protein was replaced by protein from these organisms. Concentrations of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb) were determined by ICP-MS in the various krill and amphipod meals, complete diets and muscle samples from fish fed these diets. The element concentrations were related to growth and general fish health as well as present EU legislations on feed ingredients and complete diets. The cod showed no difference in growth during the trial, while salmon fed diets where 40% of the fish meal protein was replaced with Arctic krill or amphipod meal shoved improved SGR during the first period of feeding (first 100 days). No adverse effects on growth rate or fish health were observed in any fish species or treatment. Nevertheless, high levels of Cu were found in the meal from Antarctic krill (46 mg kg− 1 dry matter (dm)) resulting in a dietary level of Cu exceeding the upper limit for complete feedingstuff set by EU. Furthermore, the Cd level found in the meal from amphipod (12 mg kg− 1 dm) was 6 times higher than EU's upper limit. This indicates limitations for the use of certain zooplanktons as alternative protein sources in feed for farmed fish, unless future processing methods yield lower levels of these unwanted elements.  相似文献

Fish meal production is not growing worldwide, therefore, it is important to search for alternative protein sources. Three types of poultry by-product meals (feed grade, prime, and refined) and two fish meals (herring and menhaden) were mixed into a casein-gelatin purified reference diet at 30% to measure apparent digestibility coefficients (ADCs) for rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss . A total of 90 fish (initial mean body weight 294.6 ± 10.7 g) were stocked into six 140-L fiberglass digestibility tanks at 15 fish per tank. Individual tanks were assigned randomly to each of the five experimental diets and the reference diet. Fecal collection by settlement lasted for 2 wk. Feces collected in each week represented a replicate, and they were analyzed separately. The ADCs of nutrients for herring meal, menhaden meal, feed grade poultry by-product meal, prime poultry by-product meal, and refined poultry by-product meal were: dry matter, 81.3, 70.9, 70.9, 71.5, and 74.5%, respectively ( P = 0.0168); crude protein, 89.8, 85.8, 83.1, 84.8, and 87.1%, respectively ( P = 0.0032); crude fat, 91.5, 90.7, 79.7, 82.7, and 79.9%, respectively ( P = 0.0004); ash, 76.6, 66.2, 74.1, 77.4, and 79.6%, respectively ( P = 0.2880); phosphorus, 58.2, 46.9, 49.4, 45.8, and 56.0%, respectively ( P = 0.0143); gross energy, 88.2, 84.0, 81.9, 83.4, and 79.8%, respectively ( P = 0.2466). Significant differences in ADCs of essential amino acid existed only for arginine, leucine, and tryptophan when comparing refined poultry by-product meal with herring meal. Results showed that refined poultry by-product meal had similar ADC values to herring meal, thus, it has a similar nutritional value and can replace portions of herring meal in rainbow trout feeds. Furthermore, differences exist in ADC values among grades of poultry by-product meals that should dictate appropriate use levels in rainbow trout feeds.  相似文献

This study assessed the effects of yellow lupin (Lupinus luteus) and narrow-leafed lupin (L. angustifolius) kernel meals and protein concentrates on the gastrointestinal integrity, capacity for digestive hydrolysis, and digestibility of nutrients in Atlantic salmon. A basal diet (FM) was made from fish meal, wheat, and fish oil. Six additional diets were formulated by replacing 30% of the FM diet with lupin kernel meal made from L. l. cv. Wodjil (LKM), L. a. cv. Belara (BKM), and L. a. cv. Myallie (MKM), lupin protein concentrates made from the same L. l. (LPC) and L. a. cv. M (MPC), or extracted soybean meal (SBM). All diets were extruded. Each diet was fed to three groups of 176 g salmon kept in 1 m2 tanks with 5.6 °C saltwater for 3 weeks prior to sampling of blood, intestinal organs, digesta, and faeces. Inclusion of lupin meals in the diets resulted in harder and more condensed feed particles. Ulcer-like lesions were observed in the stomach of fish from all feeding groups, and this was worsened by lupin in the diet, but did not appear to be pellet hardness related. No consistent altered morphology was observed in the distal intestine (DI) of fish fed the FM and lupin diets, while the DI of fish fed SBM showed consistent and typical soybean meal-induced pathomorphological changes. Plasma cholesterol was higher when feeding MKM and LKM than when feeding FM, MPC, and LPC, with intermediate levels when feeding BKM and SBM. Feeding LKM and LPC resulted in a higher weight of the GIT when related to body weight. Trypsin activity and bile acid concentration were generally higher in digesta from the pyloric (PI) and mid (MI) intestine when feeding FM and lupin diets than when feeding SBM, while the opposite was seen for trypsin activity in digesta from DI. There were no effects of diet on leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) and maltase activity in PI and MI, but in DI the activity of these brush border enzymes were significantly lowered when feeding SBM. SBM in the diet resulted in watery faeces and lowered apparent digestibility of lipid, but this was not observed when feeding the lupin diets. To conclude, the tested lupin kernel meals and protein concentrates did not alter the intestinal function in Atlantic salmon when included at 30% of the diet. Dietary lupin was, however, involved in the worsening of ulcer-like gastric lesions.  相似文献

The in vitro and in vivo effect of prolactin (PRL) on kidney macrophages from Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) was investigated under the assumption that PRL stimulates immune innate response in mammals. Kidney macrophages were treated two ways: first, cultured in RPMI 1640 medium containing 10, 25, 50 and 100 ng/mL of PRL and second, isolated from a fish with a PRL-injected dose of 100 ng/Kg. Reduced nitro blue tetrazolium (formazan) was used to produce intracellular superoxide anion. Phagocytic activity of PRL was determined in treated cells by optical microscopy observation of phagocytized Congo red-stained yeast. Kidney lysozyme activity was measured in PRL-injected fish. In vitro and in vivo macrophages treated with PRL presented an enhanced superoxide anion production, elevated phagocytic index and increased phagocytic activity. Treated fish showed higher levels of lysozyme activity in the head kidney compared to the control. These results indicate that PRL-stimulated innate immune response in Atlantic salmon and future studies will allow us to assess the possibility of using PRL as an immunostimulant in the Chilean salmon industry.  相似文献

A series of trials were conducted with Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei, to evaluate the efficiency of two salmon meals as compared to anchovy meal. The basal diet contained 200 g/kg anchovy meal, which was systematically replaced (0%, 50%, 75% and 100%) with salmon meal on an isonitrogenous basis. Another two diets were formulated with a hydrolysed salmon meal to replace 50% and 100% anchovy meal. Each diet was randomly fed to four replicate groups of 25 and 30 shrimp per tank in clear (indoor) and green (outdoor) water trials, respectively. The results showed that growth performance and feed conversion ratio were not statistically different when salmon meal replaced anchovy meal in both trials. However, when hydrolysed salmon meal was used to replace 100% of the anchovy meal, growth performance of the shrimp significantly decreased. The four kinds of fish meal (anchovy, salmon by‐product meals and menhaden) were evaluated in an ingredient digestibility trial using the 70:30 replacement technique. In general, dry matter, energy, protein and individual amino acids digestibility of salmon meal were significantly higher than those of menhaden and anchovy meal. Results of this study demonstrated that salmon meals are a good protein sources which can replace anchovy meal.  相似文献

The effect of heat treatment during fish meal processing on amino acid racemization was studied. The hydrolysis-induced racemization rate (R) and the d -isomer content in the sample before hydrolysis (I) were differentiated by means of deuterium labelling and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis in selected ion monitoring mode. A preliminary experiment on laboratory-made herring meals cooked at 125°C for different time intervals showed aspartic acid (Asp) as the only amino acid with significant racemization before hydrolysis. Aspartic acid racemization rate appeared to be a nearly linear function of the duration of thermal treatment (R2= 0.93; P < 0.01). Analyses were carried out on several samples of commercial fish meals from different origin. Low-temperature-dried fish meals had a d -Asp content, expressed as I= 100 [d -isomer concentration before hydrolysis / (d - +l -isomer concentration before hydrolysis)], at less than 1%, while the d -isomer content of high-temperature dried fish meals exceeded 2%. Differences between the two commercial categories were statistically significant (P < 0.001). Further studies are required in order to evaluate the effects of d -Asp in protein of fish feeds and the role of the raw material and processing parameters in inducing amino acid racemization in protein of fish meals.  相似文献

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of feeding diets containing herring or anchvoy oil, on flesh quality parameters of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Two extruded experimental diets with the same basal composition but one coated with herring oil and the other with anchovy oil, were each fed during 24 weeks to salmon with an average initial weight of 1.8 kg. Salmon grew to a final weight of 3.9 kg. Growth, condition factor and biometric parameters were not affected by the dietary treatment. No significant differences were found for intramuscular fat. Monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) concentrations were highest in the group fed the diet containing herring oil, in both neutral and polar lipids, while the group fed the diet containing the anchovy oil showed a higher concentration of n-3 fatty acids in both fractions of intramuscular lipids. The n-3/n-6 ratio was higher in the neutral lipid fraction of fish fed the southern hemisphere oil, while no significantly differences were found for the polar lipid fraction. No differences were found on muscle α-tocopherol levels. Muscle homogenates from fish fed the anchovy oil showed the highest thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) after 9 days of storage. However no differences were found between groups on the induced oxidation tests. It is concluded that the origin of the fish oil has no effect on growth perfomance, but there is a marked effect on fatty acid composition and susceptibility to lipid oxidation.  相似文献

Growth performance, muscle cellularity, flesh quality, and plasma ghrelin were investigated in 0+ and 1+ farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) from 40 g to 4.3 kg. Reduced meal frequency was introduced in both smolt groups from ~1.5 kg; one meal per second day (<5 °C) to one daily meal (>5 °C), while control groups were fed one to three daily meals. Results show that 0+ salmon had higher final fibre number and density, pigment content, red colour intensity, firmer flesh, and lower fillet fat content than 1+ salmon at 4.3 kg, affected by season and smolt type. Muscle fibre recruitment was an important determinant of fillet firmness and colour, possibly influenced by the prenatal temperature regime. Fish fed reduced meal frequency showed temporal reduced feeding ration, but growth performance was not compromised in any smolt groups at harvest. However, fillet fat, gaping, and colour decreased by less frequent feeding, with permanent effects in 1+ salmon for gaping and fat. Reduced meal frequency is therefore considered to be a promising tool for managing important flesh quality attributes in salmon without compromising growth performance. It is also suggested that ghrelin stimulates short‐term appetite, and perhaps also in the longer term.  相似文献

The availability of a rapid, cost-effective, accurate and reliable method of assessing fish meal protein digestibility would greatly enhance and standardize quality-control procedures in both the fish meal and fish feed industries. However, while several in vitro digestibility tests have been developed, few have been adopted by industry due to their time-consuming nature, problems surrounding reliability and/or inconsistencies in predictive ability. The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the utility and predictive qualities of two in vitro digestion assays of distinct design. Methods examined included a novel open system, wherein on-line removal of digestion products was attainable, and a closed system, which permitted analysis of products following completion of the digestion process. Results provided by the two systems were compared using four differentially processed fish meals. The open system supplied information based upon the detected quantity of products below 10 kDa. The closed system provided measurement of free amino groups. Both methods were in agreement with respect to assessing the presence of hydrolysed product. Both systems furnished complementary data with respect to the characterization of fish meal protein quality. The closed and open systems provided insight upon digestibility and digestion kinetic profiles respectively.  相似文献

A commercially available soybean molasses (alcohol extract from soybean meal) was included at levels of 0. 5,10,15 and 20% in a fish meal based diet for Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., weighing about 75 g. These inclusion levels supplied dietary alcohol soluble components corresponding to levels that would have been obtained if a standard soybean meal was included at levels up to about 70%. The fish were reared in fresh water at 9oC and with a minimum of 7 ppm O2 at outlet, and fed the experimental diets for 14 days before the faeces were stripped. Digestibility coefficients were determined using chromic oxide as an indigestible indicator. The digestibility of fat, and particularly the long-chained, saturated-and monounsaturated fatty acids, were significantly reduced by increasing the inclusion level of soybean molasses, whereas digestibility of dry matter, protein (%N x 6.25) and polyunsaturated fatty acids were not affected significantly. The present results show that alcohol-soluble components of soybeans may be responsible for a significant part of the negative effects of standard soybean meal in diets for Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

Press cake meals were prepared from previously frozen herring immediately following thawing and after storage for 8 or 12 days at 2-5°C. Each of the raw sources of herring was subjected to two processing temperatures, 75°C and 100°C, during meal preparation. Also, protein hydrolysates were prepared using ocean perch when fresh or after storage at 2-5°C for 4 or 8 days. Subsequently, each of the three hydrolysates was dried at 85°C or 93°C. In two separate experiments, each of the herring press cake meals and dried perch protein hydrolysates was blended with a reference diet in a 30:70 ratio (test protein source: reference diet). All diets contained 5 g kg?1 chromic oxide as an indigestible marker. The reference diet and all test diets were provided to satiation to chinook salmon in salt water and rainbow trout in fresh water, with digestibility of organic matter, protein and energy measured by difference. Digestibility of protein was also measured by the pH-stat and dilute pepsin solubility in vitro techniques. The results indicated that variation in processing temperature to a maximum of 100°C had little effect on digestibility of marine fish protein sources. By contrast, raw material storage for 8 days or more at 2-5°C prior to processing was found to reduce organic matter digestibility and sometimes nitrogen digestibility in salmonids. In vitro measures of digestibility were of little help in predicting the nutritive value of the test protein sources. Cadaverine level in herring press cake meal was shown to be a good indicator of spoilage in the raw material.  相似文献

Growth, nutrient utilisation and gastrointestinal evacuation time using different fish meal particle sizes and dietary protein concentration was examined in Atlantic salmon. Salmon were given micro, standard or coarse grounded fish meals at two dietary protein concentrations (30 or 45%) in isolipid diets. Gastric evacuation time was influenced by fish meal particle size. Coarse ground fish meal gave a slower gastric evacuation time compared to finer ground fish meal. Specific growth rate was not influenced by the protein concentration, but there was an adverse effect of coarse ground particles. This effect may be explained by the reduced feed intake of fish fed diets containing coarse ground fish meal. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) or energy conversion ratio (ECR) was reduced with increasing dietary protein concentration. This effect was mainly caused by different energy levels in the diets and not protein/carbohydrate levels. Standard coarse fish meal gave a reduction in ECR, but there was no effect of fish meal particle size on FCR. A protein sparing effect of starch was demonstrated. Productive protein value (PPV) and productive energy value (PEV) was not affected by dietary protein concentration or fish meal particle size. Dietary protein concentration had no effect on nitrogen or fat digestibility but there was a reduction in fat digestibility when coarse ground fishmeal was used in the diets. There were only minor effects on the dressing out percentage, condition factor and fat in cutlet.  相似文献
