Equine helminth infections: control by selective chemotherapy   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
A programme of selective anthelmintic therapy was used in a herd of 31 horses. Faecal egg counts were done during the months of September, November, January, March, May and the following September. Horses with greater than or equal to 100 eggs per gram (epg) were treated with ivermectin, and those with less than 100 epg were not treated. The criteria for adequate internal parasite control in the herd was a median herd faecal egg count of less than or equal to 100 epg. Effectiveness of selective therapy was assessed by faecal egg count after nine months of treatment and was determined to be adequate when a median herd egg count of 0 epg was obtained. However, on returning from pasture the following September, median herd egg count had risen to 325 epg. A statistically significant correlation was seen in the paired September faecal egg counts of the horses in that initial September faecal egg count was predictive for the following September. Initial September faecal egg count was related to the number of anthelmintic treatments required during the period of selective therapy, whereas age of horse was not. We propose that faecal egg counts be incorporated into strategic anthelmintic programmes as an economical tool for identifying and targeting herd members predisposed to shedding elevated numbers of helminth eggs.  相似文献

Haemonchus contortus eggs were extracted from sheep feces and known numbers were added to helminthologically sterile bovine feces to provide samples with seven, 30 and 60 eggs per gram (epg). At 60 epg, dilution techniques (modified Cornell-McMaster and modified McMaster) tended to overestimate the number of eggs and more eggs were recovered (mean of 121 and 88% respectively) with these techniques than with centrifugal concentration procedures (modified Cornell—63% and Wisconsin— 69%). At 30 epg, all techniques were comparable (modified Cornell-McMaster 67%, modified McMaster 63%, modified Cornell and Wisconsin 64%). At 7 epg, the Wisconsin (61%), modified Cornell (60%) and Cornell-McMaster (94%) techniques were comparable and better than the modified McMaster technique (16%). At all levels of epg, the modified Cornell and Wisconsin techniques recovered eggs from 100% of the samples. The Cornell-McMaster and modified McMaster techniques recovered eggs from 90 and 100% of samples at 60 epg; 40 and 100% at 30 epg; and 21 and 11% at 7 epg. With a gravitational concentration procedure, the Standard Vial, no more than 16% of the eggs at any level of epg were recovered and at 7 epg eggs were recovered from only one-half of the samples. Five gravitational concentration techniques were assessed over 66 to 490 epg. The Ovassay, Fecalyzer and modified Standard Vial techniques were comparable in efficiency (28%, 25% and 24% respectively), but the Standard Vial technique was less efficient (11%).

Introduced into diagnostic parasitology was the concept of predictive values which is the proportion of samples that a technique correctly identifies as being negative for parasite eggs. At 7 epg this was calculated to be zero for the modified Cornell-McMaster, modified McMaster and Standard Vial techniques and 100 for the Wisconsin and modified Cornell techniques.

The results from routine monitoring of parasite burdens in ewe flocks from 1980 to 1991 by the Massey University Veterinary Clinic were analysed. Faecal strongylate nematode egg counts from 401 flock samples were analysed according to ewe age (two-tooth, 16-23 month-old vs mixed-age, greater than 2-year-old ewes) and month of the year. Each flock sample contained faeces from ten ewes and nematode egg counts were carried out on each faecal sample. ln the mixed-age ewes, the overall mean faecal egg count per gram of faeces (epg) was lowest during January (82 epg) and rose to a peak during October (539 epg). The overall mean faecal egg count in two-tooth ewes remained constant from January (240 epg) to June (294 epg) and dropped during July (156 epg). Overall, 8% of the mixed-age ewes and 12% of the two-tooth ewe submissions had a mean egg count equal to or greater than 500 epg. It is possible that these data over-estimate the pasture contamination by ewes as farmers are more likely to submit faecal samples and to seek veterinary assistance when parasitism is thought to be a problem. The role of ewes as a source of pasture contamination should be considered when developing parasite control regimes on farms.  相似文献

The relationship between egg elimination and parasitic burden was studied in two groups of 12 lambs experimentally infected with 1000 and 3000 Dicrocoelium dendriticum metacercariae, respectively. Half the animals in each group were slaughtered 2 months post-infection (p.i.) and the other half 6 months p.i. In order to detect and follow elimination of D. dendriticum eggs by the lambs, faeces samples collection started one and a half months p.i. and continued fortnightly until the end of the experiment. Egg elimination was first detected between days 49 and 79 p.i. (mean = 59 +/- 1.6 SE). Mean eggs per gram (epg) was higher in the lambs infected with 3000 metacercariae (347.2 +/- 42.4 epg) than in those infected with 1000 (194.8 +/- 14.4), although no significant differences were detected between both groups using the Student 't' test. Egg elimination was higher in the faeces samples taken in the afternoon (mean = 357.8 +/- 47.6 epg) than in those from the morning (mean = 215.7 +/- 21.3). The percentage of metacercariae which became established as worms was higher in the animals dosed with 1000 metacercariae (21.6%) than in those infected with 3000 (16.3%). The number of worms recovered on necropsy of each animal varied between 30 and 2063 (mean = 346.6 +/- 80.5) and their length between 2.6 and 7.1 mm (mean = 5.2 +/- 0.1). The mean number of parasites for lambs infected with 3000 metacercariae (489.3 +/- 163.1) was higher than that obtained from those dosed with 1000 (215.7 +/- 41.4), although more worms were collected in some cases from the lambs infected with the latter dose than the former. In general there was an increase in the number of epg eliminated as days p.i. and parasitic burden increased. A positive relationship was observed via the correlation coefficient between the number of epg eliminated by each of the lambs throughout the experiment and that of worms recovered. Previous studies have indicated that host genetics significantly affects the number of gastrointestinal nematode eggs per gram (epg) in the feces of calves during their first grazing season. An entire calf crop of approximately 190 animals was monitored monthly until weaning to verify these earlier results, and to begin to discern the basis for this phenomenon. A significant genetic effect on fecal epg values was not observed until calves had been on pasture for 2-3 months, and was demonstrable until late in the grazing season when the effect was lost. The loss of a genetic effect coincided with the appearance of significant numbers of the more highly fecund nematode species Haemonchus placei and Oesophagostomum radiatum, and with an apparent increase in Ostertagia ostertagi transmission, indicating that the observed genetic control of epg values may be species specific, dose dependent or both. Calves were selected from the population, and grouped according to their epg phenotype over the grazing season as either high or low epg calves. Postmortem examination of some of these calves indicated that worm burdens in the low epg calves were 60% of those of the high epg calves. Experimental challenge inoculation of the remaining calves indicated that: (1) challenge with Cooperia oncophora resulted in low epg calves harboring worm numbers that were 65% of those of high epg calves; (2) challenge with O. ostertagi resulted in similar numbers of worms in both groups, but the fecundity of worms in the low epg groups was significantly lower (P less than 0.05) than in the high epg group. Analysis of serum anti-Ostertagia antibody levels in the grazing calf population showed rises in serum IgG1, IgG2, IgM and IgA antibody levels during the grazing season. Peak serum IgG2 and IgG1 anti-Ostertagia antibody levels were found to be significantly affected by host genetic factors while IgA and IgM levels were not under such control.  相似文献

Sub-clinical parasitism in spring-born single suckled beef calves was investigated from the middle of their first grazing season until weaning or housing later the same year. The study was conducted on four beef suckler herds in southern England over a 3-year period and involved a total of 334 spring-born beef suckler calves and their dams. The animals were grazed extensively on pastures naturally infected with nematode larvae. At the start of each period of observation, faecal samples were taken from calves and cows and subjected to routine worm egg counts; calves were re-sampled at the end of the grazing season.In July in each year and at each location the calves were ranked by initial weight within sex, paired according to rank and randomly allocated to either an untreated control group or a group in which the calves were each treated with an ivermectin sustained-release (SR) bolus. The calves in both trial groups, and their dams, were grazed together until weaning or housing. The calves were weighed at the initial allocation and at the end of the study. The adult cows were not treated with any anthelmintic during the study.The faecal nematode egg counts (FECs) conducted in July showed that the suckler cows were excreting worm eggs at low concentrations: range 0-100 eggs per gram (epg), with one individual count of 500epg, 88% of the cows sampled had counts of <50epg. Similarly, the counts from the calf samples were fairly low in July: range 0-250epg, 73% of the calves sampled had counts of <50epg. By the end of the grazing season, the faecal samples from the untreated control calves showed higher values: range 0-650epg, with only 58% having an epg of <50.The average rate of daily liveweight gain in the untreated heifer calves was 0.79kg per day, the corresponding figure for the heifer calves treated with the ivermectin SR bolus in mid-summer was 0.88kg per day; the difference of 90g per day was significantly different (P=0.0118). The average rate of daily liveweight gain in the untreated bull calves was 0.91kg per day, the corresponding figure for the bull calves treated with the ivermectin SR bolus in mid-summer was 1.01kg per day; the difference was significantly different (P=0.0169).  相似文献

CASE DESCRIPTIONS: 16 horses treated daily with pyrantel tartrate (2.64 mg/kg [1.2 mg/lb], PO) as part of a prophylactic anthelmintic program. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Fecal worm egg counts (FWECs) were obtained on all 16 horses. Mean FWEC was 478 eggs/g (epg; range, 0 to 4,075 epg). Three of the 16 horses were responsible for 85% of the total fecal egg output for the herd on the day of sampling. Six horses had FWECs < 200 epg. Three horses that had arrived within 4 months of the sampling date had FWECs < 100 epg. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: An FWEC reduction test was initiated the day after FWECs were obtained; all horses with FWECs > 100 epg (9 horses) were treated with pyrantel pamoate (6.6 mg/kg [3 mg/lb], PO), and 14 days later, the FWEC was repeated. During the 14-day period, all horses received pyrantel tartrate (2.64 mg/kg, PO) daily. Fecal worm egg count reduction was calculated for each horse. Mean FWEC reduction for the group was 28.5% (range, increase of 21% in FWECs 14 days after treatment to a decrease of 100% in FWEC 14 days after treatment). CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Farms should be monitored for cyathostomes resistant to pyrantel pamoate prior to use of pyrantel tartrate. Fecal worm egg counts should be monitored routinely in horses before and after treatment to ensure efficacy of cyathostome control measures.  相似文献

A study for about a 30-month period was done to compare strongyle control programs, using per os treatments of ivermectin (IVE) paste exclusively or alternation of 4 antiparasitic paste compounds: IVE, oxfendazole (OFZ), oxibendazole (OBZ), or pyrantel pamoate (PRT). Every 8 weeks, 1 group of horses (barn C; n = 14 to 16) was given IVE paste exclusively, and a second group (barn E; n = 16) was given the 4 antiparasitic pastes on an alternating schedule. Worm eggs and larvae per gram of feces (epg and lpg, respectively) values were determined every 2 weeks during the investigation. This study in grazing horses (mares and fillies), naturally infected with internal parasites, was conducted during the period between Oct 22, 1987 and Feb 8, 1990, with an additional observation on Mar 28, 1990. For barn-C horses, treated exclusively with IVE (200 micrograms/kg of body weight) 14 times, 2-week posttreatment mean strongyle epg and lpg (small strongyle) values were reduced 99 to 100%. Mean strongyle epg and lpg (small strongyle) values for each 2-week sample period remained low (less than 20) throughout the study period, except for 1 moderate transient increase in July 1988. For the entire study period, the aggregate mean strongyle epg value was 12 and the lpg value was 6. Two-week posttreatment mean strongyle epg and lpg (small strongyle) values for barn-E horses, treated alternately with therapeutic (approx) dosage of IVE (200 micrograms/kg; 4 times), OFZ (10 mg/kg; 5 times), OBZ (10 mg/kg; 4 times), or PRT (6.6 mg base/kg; 2 times), varied within and between compounds.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Levamisole, morantel, fenbendazole, or ivermectin was administered at 2-week intervals from May 1 through Sept 14, 1985, to breeding ewes (20 ewes/drug) infected with various gastrointestinal nematodes. All ewes had fewer gastrointestinal nematode eggs per gram of feces (epg) after 2 treatments, compared with pretreatment epg counts. Ewes administered ivermectin continued to have a low mean epg (0 to 3) throughout the study. The mean epg counts of ewes treated with levamisole increased from 3 to 483 during the study. This increase was similar to that of ewes treated with morantel (7 to 485 epg). The mean epg count of fenbendazole-treated ewes increased from 4 to 192 during the study. By the end of the study, the mean epg counts when expressed as a percentage of the pretreatment epg counts were 4% (ivermectin), 249% (fenbendazole), 627% (levamisole), and 630% (morantel). With the exception of the ivermectin-treated ewes, the epg count increased almost linearly in the ewes after the 2nd anthelmintic treatment. These data indicate that the gastrointestinal nematodes (including Haemonchus contortus) may have developed more resistance to levamisole and morantel than to fenbendazole. On the basis of the epg counts, resistance to ivermectin did not develop during the 4.5-month treatment period. The percentage of ewes shedding eggs after 2, 4, and 6 anthelmintic treatments was lowest for ewes treated with ivermectin (20%) and was similar (40%) for ewes treated with 1 of the other 3 anthelmintics. Twenty-eight horses with a residual burden of strongyle eggs in the faces after treatment with mebendazole (MBZ) paste were treated with a suspension of either MBZ or oxibendazole (OBZ). Fecal samples were collected before and 14 days after these treatments. The number of strongyle eggs/g (epg) of feces for each horse was estimated using the Cornell-McMaster dilution and the Cornell-Wisconsin double centrifugation procedures. The epg for each horse was transformed using log (× + 1) and in an analysis of variance of the reduction in egg count for each horse on the logarithmic scale, there was a highly significant difference between the treatments. The mean epg was increased in the MBZ-treated horses and reduced in the OBZ-treated horses, but the reduction was only by 82% with an upper confidence limit of 89%. Subsequently, the horses were retreated with MBZ and OBZ suspensions without significant reduction in the mean epg for OBZ-treated horses.  相似文献

Forty ewes were allocated into one of four groups (n = 10) and were treated with albendazole (ALB) (3.8 mg kg(-1)) before lambing (group A), with ALB before and after lambing (group B), with moxidectin (MXD) (0.2 mg kg(-1)) before lambing (group C) or were untreated controls (group D). Counts of nematode eggs in faeces and coprocultures were carried out during the study, as well as ewes' milk yield measurements and lamb weighings. Pre-treatment mean eggs per gram (epg) counts were 640, 715, 625 and 630 for groups A, B, C and D, respectively (P > 0.05); respective counts 21 days after treatment were 5, 0, 0 and 690 epg, whilst 70 days after treatment they were 380, 145, 40 and 1120 epg. Mean lactation milk yield was 3527.5, 3893.5, 3786.4 and 3285.9 ml for groups A, B, C and D, respectively; no significant difference was evident among the four groups in milk yield collected during the suckling period, although subsequently, group B or C ewes yielded significantly more milk than controls (P < 0.05). Mean birthweight of lambs were 3.56, 3.45, 3.59 and 3.26 kg for groups A, B, C and D, respectively (P = 0.045); subsequently, lambs from treated ewes were significantly heavier than lambs from control animals (P < 0.001). We conclude that anti-parasitic treatment during the last month of pregnancy contributed to an increased birthweight of lambs of treated ewes, whilst the cumulative effect of two doses of ALB or the long persistent efficacy of MXD provided a longer protection of animals against new parasitic infections and contributed to a lactation persistence.  相似文献

Oxibendazole (OBZ; 10 mg/kg of body weight) was administered to ponies at 8-week intervals to control strongylosis in a breeding band of Shetland-type ponies (n = 29 to 50) from October 1978 through September 1984. A similar use of cambendazole (CBZ; 20 mg/kg of body weight) in this band of ponies during the preceding 4-year period resulted in the survival of a CBZ-resistant population (S) of small strongyles. Effectiveness of OBZ treatments was monitored by pre- and posttreatment counts of the number of strongyle eggs per gram of feces (epg) and of the number of strongyle larvae per gram of feces (lpg). For the first 4 years of the 6-year period, epg and lpg counts were determined for 3 to 5 of the OBZ treatments; during the last 2 years, counts were determined for each treatment. For the 1st year, the mean reduction in epg was 96%. During the 2nd and 3rd years, mean reductions in epg were 80% and 81%, respectively. For the 4th and 5th years, mean reductions in epg were 69% and 43%, respectively. For the 6th year, the mean reduction in epg was 37%. Statistical analyses of the epg data, using the linear plateau method, indicated a significant increase in residual (surviving) strongyle infections after the periodic OBZ treatments, with a mean annual increase in survival of 10.3% for the 6 years. Changes in lpg were variable, but an overall loss of effectiveness of the OBZ treatments was evident. Thirty yearling F1 Anglo-Nubian×Mubende goats, averaging 21±0.45 kg, kept on free-range feeding in the Ankole range land, Uganda, were screened for health and nutritional status, effectively treated against helminth parasites, mated, and randomly divided into two equal groups during a 3-month preparatory phase. During the 6 months that followed, the goats in one group received a daily oral dose (50 g/goat) of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), while the other group acted as the control (no PEG). The goats were monitored for faecal nematode egg counts and body weight gains, along with the quality of their diet, nematode contamination of the pasture, and the prevailing climatic factors in the area. Goats treated with PEG had significantly (p<0.05) higher faecal helminth egg loads. The mean nematode eggs per gram of faeces (epg) of the PEG group (290 epg) was more than double that of the control group (129 epg). All the PEG-treated goats exhibited moderate to severe infections at the end of the experiment. The gain in body weight during gestation was lower (p<0.05) in the PEG group (70.4 g per goat per day) than in the control group (91.8 g per goat per day). The PEG group lost 2.3 g per goat per day in the fifth month. PEG deactivates condensed tannins, and it was concluded that condensed tannins play a significant role in reducing the negative effects of gastrointestinal helminth burdens in the natural free-range feeding system of the Ankole range land in Uganda. Selective feeding on such range lands might expose goats to optimal concentrations of dietary condensed tannins with resultant beneficial effects.  相似文献

Clinical trials on a central Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm (B) during 1960-1961 involved nine test treatments of mares, yearlings and weanlings (n = 124), and compared efficacies of phenothiazine (PTZ), piperazine (PPZ), mixtures of PTZ + PPZ and thiabendazole (TBZ) for (1) percent reduction and (2) complete clearance or graded reduction of strongyle egg per gram (epg) counts. Three grades of PTZ (N.F. green, micronized purified and 2-3 microns purified) at the dose rate of 55 mg kg-1 were ineffective in six tests; reduction of strongyle epg count were low grade (26%) and complete clearance was found in only 1 of 32 horses. Piperazine alone at 88 mg base kg-1 was efficacious in two tests; epg counts were effectively reduced (98%), but complete clearance was found in only 2 of 10 horses. Several mixtures of PTZ + PPZ with various dosages of PTZ (27.5-55 mg kg-1) plus PPZ base (88 mg kg-1) were quite effective in six tests, as epg counts were reduced by 96% and complete clearance occurred in 25 of 38 horses. Four trials with TBZ at dose rates between 13 and 44 mg kg-1 in 1961 reduced epg counts by 98%, but cleared only 15 of 36 horses. These data indicated: (1) a large segment of the Farm B small strongyle population was resistant to PTZ at the outset of these observations in 1960; (2) TBZ-resistant individuals were also present in this population when TBZ was first used in 1961. During the ensuing 4-year study (1962-1965) on Farm B mares (n = 15 per year) and yearlings (n = 15-17 per year), biweekly epg and larvae per gram (lpg) counts were carried out to compare the efficacy of three treatment programs: (1) monthly doses of TBZ at 26 mg kg-1; (2) monthly doses of TBZ at 13 mg kg-1; (3) bimonthly doses of a mixture of PTZ + PPZ and carbon disulfide (CS2) at dose rates of 27.5 + 88 and 78 mg kg-1, respectively, or a mixture of PTZ + PPZ + trichlorfon (TCF) at dose rates of 27.5 + 88 + 40 mg kg-1, respectively. Emergence of a TBZ-resistant segment of the small strongyle infections was evaluated by three criteria: (1) annual mean strongyle epg counts; (2) efficacy of individual treatments for epg reductions (%); (3) complete clearance or graded reductions of strongyle epg counts.4+ PTZ-resistant small strongyles. The purpose of the present study was to verify results of the lowest dose (5 mg kg-1) of febantel evaluated in an earlier trial in which there were no differences in efficacies of three dose rates (5, 7.5 and 10 mg kg-1 body weight) against natural gastrointestinal nematode infections of cattle. Fourteen Angus calves (mean weight and age of 155 kg and 525 days, respectively), from the same farm, with relatively heavy (mean of 448 eggs g-1 feces (epg] parasite burdens were selected. After an adjustment period of 8 days in drylot, beginning on 25 July, seven calves were treated with a 45.5% paste formulation of febantel. On Day 7 post-treatment, calves were necropsied for determination of residual worms. Rectal fecal samples were obtained prior to adjustment, at treatment, 5 days post-treatment and at necropsy. On both Day 5 post-treatment and at necropsy a mean of less than 1 epg was recovered from treated calves compared with 765 and 1566 epg, respectively, in control calves. Worms counts at necropsy revealed an efficacy of 98.5% against all adult abomasal worms (Haemonchus placei, 100%, P less than 0.02; Trichostrongylus axei, 99.4%, P less than 0.0001; Ostertagia ostertagi, 90.5%, P less than 0.0002). Treatment was 100% efficacious against adult small and large intestinal worms. However, numbers of Bunostomum phlebotomum, O. radiatum and Trichuris spp. recovered in the control calves were too low to enable a reliable test of drug efficacy. REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Possible anthelmintic resistance on a breeding farm where a rapid rotation anthelmintic programme had been implemented for 9 years was investigated. Cyathostomins resistant to fenbendazole and pyrantel were documented by faecal worm egg count reduction test (FWECRT). OBJECTIVES: To 1) manage small strongyle transmission in a herd of horses in which resistance to both pyrantel pamoate and fenbendazole was identified and thereby reduce the risk of clinical disease in the individual animal, 2) monitor the change in resistance patterns over time and 3) monitor the efficacy of ivermectin over the study period. METHODS: Targeted ivermectin treatment of horses on the farm was instituted for mature horses with faecal worm egg counts (FWEC) > 200 eggs/g (epg) and for horses < age 2 years with FWEC > 100 epg. RESULTS: Over a 30 month period, targeted ivermectin treatment achieved acceptable control in mares, as judged by FWEC, and improved control of patent cyathostome infection in consecutive foal crops. Egg reappearance time (ERT) after treatment with ivermectin was < 8 weeks in mares and foals more frequently in the second year of the study than in the first year. Numbers of anthelmintic treatments were reduced by 77.6 and 533% in the mare and foal group, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Targeted ivermectin treatment may be an economically viable method of managing multiple drug resistant cyathostominosis. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: Use of ivermectin should be monitored closely for development of resistance.  相似文献

Studies on a Thoroughbred breeding farm in Ohio from 1982 to 1988 demonstrated the value of three anthelmintic pastes (ivermectin, oxibendazole, pyrantel pamoate) in controlling benzimidazole resistant cyathostomes (small strongyles) in adult horses. However, a comparison of drug efficacy in suppressing faecal egg counts for the full period between treatments showed a significant reduction in efficacy of all drugs in yearling horses compared with adults. Mean faecal egg counts of adult horses were generally kept below 100 eggs per gram (epg) of faeces when using oxibendazole or pyrantel pamoate at four to five week intervals and ivermectin at eight week intervals. By contrast, mean counts of young horses rose as high as 655 epg (oxibendazole), 729 epg (pyrantel pamoate) and 852 epg (ivermectin) within the same time period after treatment. Individual counts of treated yearlings sometimes exceeded 3,000 epg. Three distinct mechanisms appeared to be involved in the poor results in young horses. These were 1) anthelmintic refuge, 2) anthelmintic resistance, and 3) anthelmintic avoidance.  相似文献

From 1973 to 1977, a survey of internal parasites in Wyoming cattle was conducted via fecal analyses of 1,490 beef cattle. Sugar flotation techniques were used, with a factor of 2 times the actual egg counts. The prevalence of internal parasites of beef cattle in this survey was compared with that in a previous survey conducted on Wyoming beef cattle from 1957 to 1961. Results of analyses indicated no true change in mean eggs per gram of feces (epg) as follows: calves, 14 epg in 1961 and 20 epg in 1977; yearlings, 29 epg in 1961 and 19 epg in 1977; and adults, 22 epg in 1961 and 21 epg in 1977.  相似文献

Johne's disease (JD) is an incurable, chronic infectious disease prevalent in dairy herds throughout the US and the world. The substantial economic losses caused by JD have been well documented. However, information on the costs of controlling the disease is limited, yet necessary, if producers are to make sound decisions regarding JD management. The purpose of this paper is to describe a method for evaluating the cost-effectiveness of management changes to control JD on infected dairy farms. A 5-year longitudinal study of six dairy herds infected with JD was performed. Each herd implemented a JD control program upon study enrollment. Prevalence of JD within each herd was monitored with annual testing of all adult cows using fecal culture and/or serum ELISA. Individual cow production and culling information was collected to estimate the annual economic losses caused by JD. An economic questionnaire was developed and administered to each herd annually to estimate costs directly attributable to the JD control program. Based on the costs of the control program, and using the losses to estimate the potential benefits of the control program, the net present value (NPV) of the control program was calculated for each herd during the study and projected into the future for a total of 20 years. The NPV was calculated for four different scenarios: (1) assuming a linear decline in losses beyond the observed period of the study with JD eradication by year 20 of the control program; (2) assuming losses and JD prevalence remain constant at the rate equal to that of the last observed year while continuing the control program; (3) assuming linear increase in losses at rate equal to that in scenario 1 with no control program; and (4) assuming losses remain constant at same level as the beginning of the study with no control plan implemented. The NPV varied greatly across the herds. For scenario 1, only three herds had a positive NPV; and only two herds had a positive NPV under scenario two. In the absence of a control program, the NPV's were always negative. The costs of the JD control programs implemented on these herds averaged $30/cow/year with a median of $24/cow/year. The annual losses due to JD averaged $79/cow/year with a median of $66/cow/year. Investing in a JD control program can be cost-effective.  相似文献

Objectives : To estimate the prevalence and describe the extent and severity of periodontal disease and associated periodontal parameters in beagle dogs. Methods : A full‐mouth, site‐specific examination was performed in 98 beagle dogs. Focus was placed on clinical attachment loss, pocket depth and bleeding on probing. Results : The prevalence of clinical attachment loss greater than equal to 1 mm was 20 per cent in the one‐year‐old dogs, increasing to 84 per cent of the dogs aged more than three years. The number of sites affected with clinical attachment loss greater than equal to 1 mm showed a skewed distribution. The prevalence of clinical attachment loss greater than equal to 4 mm was only seven per cent. A probing pocket depth of 4+ mm was observed in 44 to 81 per cent of the dogs, depending on age. Also, the distribution of the number of deepened pockets/dog was skewed. The teeth most prone to clinical attachment loss greater than equal to 1 mm were the P2, the P3 and the P4 of the maxilla. The teeth most prone to pocket depth greater than equal to 4 mm were the maxillary canines. Clinical Significance : Periodontal disease in terms of clinical attachment loss greater than equal to 1 mm and pocket depth greater than equal to 4 mm is common in beagle dogs, but the major disease burden is carried by only a few dogs. The prevalence increases with increased age but is high already at the age of two years.  相似文献
