A modified technique for transposition of the internal obturator muscle was used to repair perineal hernias in 100 dogs. Complications and long-term results are described. The most important complications were wound infection (45%), faecal incontinence (15%), and perineal fistula (7%). These complications often occurred in combination. The recurrence rate of perineal hernia was 5%. Nine of the 15 patients with faecal incontinence had paresis of the external anal sphincter or faecal incontinence before surgery. We suggest that in numerous patients, faecal incontinence is a complication of the condition rather than a complication of treatment. The owner's assessment of the surgical result was good in 71% and moderate in 18% of the cases.  相似文献

In a nine-year period 101 dogs which were available for subsequent follow-up studies, were subjected to perineal hernia surgery. In thirty-six dogs the hernia was bilateral and, therefore, 137 hernias were initially operated. In 111 operations the standard perineal technique was adopted. In twenty-six operations the superficial gluteal muscle was reflected and sutured into the hernial defect (‘gluteal flap’). Later, following recurrence of hernia or new development on the second side, a further sixteen operations were done, including three anal splitting procedures. In all cases the deep sutures were of monofilament nylon. A post-operative follow-up was carried out for a minimum period of 12 (average 39) months. The operative and post-operative complications included superficial and deep wound infection, partial or complete sciatic paralysis, rectal prolapse and recurrence of the hernia following breakdown of the repair, as well as occurrence of the hernia on the opposite side. The success rate (75 per cent excluding six immediate post-operative fatalities) judged by remission of signs and lack of recurrence was higher in the standard technique (81 per cent) than the gluteal flap method (64 per cent). Anal splitting was unsuccessful and resulted in faecal incontinence. The standard technique was slow, sometimes gave limited exposure but was rarely associated with wound breakdown (13 per cent of operations), though sciatic paralysis was only noted in this procedure. The gluteal flap method was longer, gave excellent exposure with no risk of sciatic nerve damage, but was often associated with wound breakdown (58 per cent). Both techniques led sometimes to rectal prolapse. Castration with hernial repair resulted in a lower recurrence rate (13 per cent v. 20 per cent). Castration should be carried out in all cases of perineal hernia.  相似文献

Summary

Faecal samples from suckling piglets from 113 litters on 25 farms in the Netherlands were examined to study the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites, in particular Strongyloides ransomi and Isospora suis. S. ransomi was not found but I. suis was demonstrated in 17 of the 25 farms and in 41 out of 77 litters of these farms (53%). No other parasites were found. On the basis of these results, a longitudinal study on the incidence and significance of I. suis was performed on 10 farms (5 litters/farm). I. suis was found on 9 out of 10 farms and in 56% of the litters. Farms differed in infection levels, measured as the numbers of patent litters, and in the onset of patency. Other parasites were only found in faecal samples from the sows and from farrowing pens. These were, in order of prevalence, Balantidium coli, Ascaris suum, Eimeria spinosa, E. debliecki and E. suis.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Aims: To determine if an ELISA for measurement of IgA in equine serum could be used to measure concentrations of IgA in foal faeces and to determine correlations with concentrations in the milk of the dam.

Methods: Faeces from 20 Welsh Cob and Welsh Pony foals and milk from their dams were collected within 12?hours (Day 0) and at 6 days after parturition (Day 6). On Day 6, faeces could not be collected from 2/20 foals, and milk samples could not be collected from 3/20 mares. An equine IgA ELISA validated for serum and plasma was used to measure concentrations of IgA in all samples in triplicate. The precision of the assay for each sample type was determined using modified CV.

Results: IgA was not detectable in 7/20 Day 0 faecal samples and in 2/18 Day 6 faecal samples. For samples with detectable IgA, the mean modified CV was 10.5 (95% CI?=?6.0–15.0)% for Day 0 faecal samples, and was 6.8 (95% CI?=?4.3–9.4)% for Day 6 faecal samples. Median concentrations of IgA in faeces on Day 0 were lower than concentrations on Day 6 (0.7?mg/g vs. 37?mg/g dry matter; p?=?0.003). Concentrations of IgA in milk and faeces on Day 6 were statistically correlated (r?=?0.59; p?=?0.006).

Conclusions and clinical relevance: The IgA ELISA showed acceptable precision when used to estimate concentrations of IgA in foal faeces during the first week of life, but IgA could not be detected in 37% of meconium samples collected on Day 0. This assay may be useful for investigation of the role of maternal milk IgA in the gastrointestinal tract of neonatal foals, but further assessment of both accuracy and precision of the ELISA is required.  相似文献

Abstract

The influence of dietary protein, fat and mineral levels on crude fat and fatty acid digestibility was investigated in growing pigs. The experiment was a factorial design with two levels of protein (normal and high), two levels of dietary fat (3 and 15% of DM) and three levels of minerals (50, 100 and 150% of Danish Standard). Four litters, each of six female pigs, were used in the experiment.

Increasing the dietary protein content resulted in a moderate but significant increase in the ileal digestibility of fatty acids. The increase was most pronounced for the saturated fatty acids. Addition of animal fat to the basal diet caused a substantial increase in ileal digestibility of all fatty acids except stearic acid (18:0). A variation in the dietary mineral content of ±50% of the Danish Standard had no significant influence on ileal digestibility of crude fat and fatty acids. Apparently, microbial hydrogenation occurred in the hind-gut, but the increase in stearic acid (18:0) excretion could not be explained solely by biohydrogenation of unsaturated fatty acids. The interactions between dietary protein and fat on the increase of faecal 18:0 showed that the dietary composition had a very complex effect on the microbial activity in the hind-gut. Consequently, determination of fatty acid digestibility should be performed at the terminal ileum, whereas crude fat (Stoldt) digestibility can be carried out on faecal material.  相似文献

AIM: To determine the prevalence of infection with Candidatus Mycoplasma haemolamae (Mhl), antibodies to bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV), and BVDV antigen, and the prevalence of animals with elevated faecal nematode egg counts (FEC) in a sample of adult New Zealand alpaca (Vicugna pacos).

METHODS: Blood samples were obtained from 175 alpaca, collected from 15 farms around New Zealand, and from 31 samples sent to a diagnostic laboratory for routine haematology. Blood smears (n=170) were examined microscopically for the presence of haemoplasma, and DNA was extracted from whole blood (n=206) for real-time PCR testing for Mhl. Packed cell volume (PCV) was determined for 193 samples. Serum samples (n=195) were tested for BVDV antibody using ELISA, and for BVDV antigen using a real-time PCR assay. Faecal samples were collected from 143 animals; FEC were measured, and samples pooled for larval culture.

RESULTS: No haemoplasma organisms were present on blood smear examination. Of the 206 blood samples, two (from the same farm) were positive for Mhl by real-time PCR testing, giving a prevalence of infection with Mhl of 0.97%. Of the 195 serum samples tested, four (2.1%) were positive for antibodies to BVDV; animals with BVDV antibodies were from 3/15 (20%) farms, none of which farmed cattle. None of the serum samples were positive by PCR for BVDV antigen. The median FEC was 50?epg (min 0, max 4,700), with 55/143 (38.5%) samples having 0?epg, and 33/143 (23.1%) having 250?epg. Haemonchus spp. were the most common nematodes present in faecal larval cultures from the North Island. Log10 FEC was negatively associated with PCV (p=0.02), and was higher in males than females (p<0.001), and in animals that were positive compared with negative for Mhl (p=0.022).

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The number of alpaca infected with Mhl was low, as was the seroprevalence of BVDV. Gastrointestinal parasitism was, however, a common finding in this sample of New Zealand alpaca.  相似文献

Abstract

AIMS: To determine the concentration of Campylobacter spp. as well as faecal indicator bacteria; faecal coliforms, Escherichia coli and enterococci in the faeces of healthy adult horses in a sample of properties in the Canterbury region of New Zealand.

METHODS: The faeces of healthy adult horses (n=59), including ponies, pleasure horses and Thoroughbreds, were collected from eight properties around Christchurch, New Zealand. The faeces were analysed for concentrations of Campylobacter spp and faecal indicator bacteria; faecal coliforms, Escherichia coli and enterococci. The presence of other animals on the properties sampled as well as the age, feed and health of the horses at the time of sampling was recorded.

RESULTS: Enterococci and faecal coliforms were isolated from all samples, and E. coli was isolated from 58/59 samples. Mean concentrations of faecal coliforms and E. coli did not differ between properties, but there was a significant difference in mean concentration of enterococci between properties. Campylobacter spp. were detected in two faecal samples with one isolate being determined by PCR analysis to be a thermotolerant Campylobacter species, the other C. jejuni.

CONCLUSIONS: This is the first known report quantifying the concentration of Campylobacter spp. present in healthy adult horses in New Zealand. The presence of equine faecal material in water could elevate concentrations of faecal bacteria and therefore needs to be considered as a source of water contamination. The access of horses to waterways and coastal environments may also need to be restricted to prevent transmission of faecal indicator bacteria and potentially zoonotic agents.  相似文献

Background: Rectovaginal fistula is a rare congenital disorder of dogs and cats that may occur with or without imperforate anus. The condition is characterized by a communication between the dorsal wall of the vagina and the ventral portion of the rectum, so that the vulva functions as a common opening for the urogenital and gastrointestinal tracts. Case presentation: A 3-year-old, 0.53 kg, surgically sterilized female ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was referred for passage of feces through the vulva, repeated vaginal discharge and vaginitis. Through physical examination, ultrasound, contrast radiographs, and CT scan exploration, the ferret was diagnosed with rectovaginal fistula which was surgically corrected. A vertical median perineal incision was made starting dorsally to the anal region and extended to surround the fistula. The rectum and vagina were closed separately. Conclusion and case relevance: Early postoperative complications included constipation, fecal incontinence, and perineal soiling in dogs and cats. No complications were observed with our ferret 7 and 15 days after the surgical correction. The purpose of this report is to describe a ferret with rectovaginal fistula as a sole anorectal abnormality that was treated by surgical correction for the first time.  相似文献

Summary

The activity of albendazole against gastrointestinal helminths in naturally infected calves in the Netherlands was tested. The calves were in their fist grazing season and kept in two groups of ten. One of these groups was grazed alternately with sheep. Five out of each group were drenched with albendazole (7.5 mg/kg) on the day they were housed (November 1). Before and 2, 14, and 28 days after treatment individual faecal samples were taken from all calves and larval cultures were made. Ten calves, six treated and four untreated, were killed for post mortem studies 14 days after treatment The remaining calves were slaughtered 14 days later.

The drug was highly effective in reducing the egg output, measured as the number of larvae cultured per gram of faeces. Compared with the untreated calves, the reduction was more than 99% two days after treatment, 100% at 14 days, and 99% after 28 days. It was shown that egg output 28 days after treatment came from worms which had developed from arrested larvae of Ostertagia ostertagi that had survived treatment. Post mortem results showed an efficacy of 100% against adult O. ostertagi, of almost 100% against Trichostrongylus axei, and 100% against adult and larval Cooperia oncophora.

Twenty‐eight days after treatment, the reduction of arrested early fourth stages of O. ostertagi was 85% in comparison with the untreated calves. Apparently less effect was found against Trichuris ovis at the given dose rate.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Aims: The main goal of the current study was to evaluate, on a commercial beef cattle farm, the impact of infection with gastrointestinal nematodes resistant to both ivermectin (IVM) and moxidectin (MXD) on the productivity of calves.

Methods: Male Aberdeen Angus calves, aged 9–11 months, with faecal nematode egg counts (FEC) ≥200 epg and body weight ≥190?kg, were allocated to two herds. Herd A (n?=?90) grazed a maize-winter forage crop rotation and Herd B (n?=?90) grazed a 2-year-old Agropyrum pasture. On Day 0 in each herd, calves were randomly allocated into five groups (n?=?18), which were treated with 0.2?mg/kg IVM; 0.2?mg/kg MXD; 3.75?mg/kg ricobendazole (RBZ), both IVM and RBZ, or remained untreated. Faecal samples collected on Days ?1 and 19 were used to determine the percentage reduction in FEC, and genera of the nematodes were determined by the identification of the third-stage larvae recovered from faecal cultures. Total weight gain was determined from body weights recorded on Days ?1 and 91.

Results: Overall mean reduction in FEC was 42% for IVM, 67% for MXD, 97% for RBZ and 99% for IVM?+?RBZ. The reduction in FEC for Cooperia spp. was ≤78% for IVM and MXD, and for Haemonchus spp. was 0 and 36% for IVM and MXD, respectively, confirming the presence of parasites resistant to both anthelmintics. Only IVM?+?RBZ treatment resulted in 100% efficacy against Haemonchus spp. The overall estimated mean total weight gain for calves treated with IVM was 15.7 (95% CI?=?11.9–19.7) kg and for calves treated with IVM?+?RBZ was 28.8 (95% CI?=?25–32.5) kg (p?<?0.001). Mean total weight gain for calves treated with MXD was 23.5 (95% CI?=?19.7–27.2) kg.

Conclusions and clinical relevance: In calves naturally infected with resistant nematodes, under the production system assessed here, weight gains were lower in calves treated with anthelmintics that were moderately or highly ineffective compared to those treated with highly effective anthelmintics. These results demonstrate to farmers and veterinarians the importance of a sustainable and effective nematode control under field conditions.  相似文献

A 4-year 9-month-old beagle was presented for a 2-week history of acute onset of lowered tail carriage and faecal incontinence. Neurological examination was unremarkable except for an absent perineal reflex, there was no history of trauma. Blood work was unremarkable. Lumbosacral and coccygeal CT pre- and post-intravenous contrast revealed a large sacrococcygeal disc extrusion with mineralised material extending from the level of S2 and to midbody of Cd1. A dorsal laminectomy was performed from the cranial margin of S2 to the caudal margin of Cd1. A large volume of mineralised disc material was removed. The material was confirmed on histopathology to be consistent with extruded nucleus pulposus. The patient regained faecal continence within 3 days of hospital discharge. Based on a literature search this is the first report of a sacrococcygeal disc extrusion resulting in faecal incontinence, with successful surgical management.  相似文献

Ectopic ureter is the most common cause of congenital urinary incontinence in the dog and cat. The occurrence of ectopic ureter in the dog has been estimated to be 0.016%. A 6-month-old ferret was evaluated for urinary incontinence and urine scalding around the perineal and inguinal areas. Ultrasonography showed a nondistended urinary bladder that contained a possible intraluminal blood clot. Excretory urography revealed a left ectopic ureter. The ferret was initially treated with oral amoxicillin-clavulanate and topical silver sulfadiazine ointment for the perineal and inguinal dermatitis associated with the incontinence. Because of the potential for complications and additional surgery with ureteral transplantation, a left nephroureterectomy was performed. Surgical recovery was uneventful and the incontinence improved, although a small amount of incontinence-associated dermatitis was still present 24 days after discharge. Phenylpropanolamine therapy was initiated to address a suspected dysfunction of the urethral sphincter. Urinary incontinence improved with the phenylpropanolamine therapy; however, a small amount of incontinence persisted throughout the 3 months in which the ferret was evaluated. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of an ectopic ureter in a domestic ferret.  相似文献

Abstract

CASE HISTORY: A 14-year-old Cleveland Bay cross gelding was presented with severe urinary incontinence that had been present for 1 year, and chronic polydipsia and polyuria over 4 years. Water intake had been recorded as 240 L over a 24-hour period.

CLINICAL FINDINGS: The horse had marked urinary incontinence and polyuria and polydipsia. The urine was markedly hyposthenuric, but no abnormalities on urinalysis were detected. There were no other abnormal clinical or neurological signs. Haematological and serum biochemical examinations showed no abnormalities and ultrasonographic and endoscopic examination of the urinary tract did not reveal any abnormalities. The horse underwent a modified water deprivation test and failed to concentrate its urine after 5 days. 1-desamino-8-d-arginine vasopressin (DDAVP) was administered I/V but the urine remained isosthenuric with a specific gravity of 1.010.

DIAGNOSIS: Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. A definitive cause of the urinary incontinence was not found but overflow incontinence was considered a possibility.

CLINICAL RELEVENCE: Despite being a rare condition in the horse diabetes insipidus should be considered in cases of severe polydipsia and polyuria in mature horses.  相似文献

Summary

At the hatchery, in order to reduce bacterial infections in one‐day‐old chicks, turkey eggs are routinely dipped by the direct pressure difference method into a solution consisting of:

tylosin tartrate 2500 ppm

ampicillin sodium 1000 ppm

alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride 150 ppm

alkyldimethylethylbenzylammonium chloride 150 ppm

This dipping process was studied in more detail and the experiments allowed of drawing the following conclusions: 1. After 8 hours of use on three consecutive days the tylosin concentiation had hardly decreased, the concentration of ampicillin dropped to approximately 65% and the concentration of quaternary ammonium compounds to 33%.

2. Bacteria were isolated from the fluid only at the time of final sampling (Bacillus subtilis). All other bacteriological investigations of the dipping solution showed negative results.

3. The treatment did not appear to influence hatchhability.

4. The mortality in the first week of life of poults from treated eggs was significantly lower than of poults from untreated eggs.

Summary

The cervical lymph nodes of pigs, the retropharyngeal and submandibular lymph nodes of cattle and faecal samples from both animal species were examined for the presence of Corynebacterium equi. The organism was recovered from 19 (35 per cent) of 54 porcine cervical lymph nodes and from 0 of 54 bovine retropharyngeal and submandibular lymph nodes. Fifteen (50 per cent) of 30 bovine faecal and 11 (35 per cent) of 31 porcine faecal samples yielded C. equi.  相似文献

Background: In the last decade, Parascaris spp. resistance to anthelmintics has been recorded in many countries. In Saudi Arabia, there are limited data available on Parascaris spp. resistance to anthelmintics.

Objective: To determine the current status of ivermectin, abamectin and praziquantel combined, and fenbendazole resistance to Parascaris spp. in horses in Saudi Arabia.

Methods: Three hundred and forty-one foals from eleven different farms were examined by faecal egg count (FEC). The foals were all Arab horses aged 17.2 ± 4.5 (SD) months. Ivermectin (n = 46 foals), abamectin and praziquantel combined (n = 46), and fenbendazole (n = 46) were administered on day 0 and faeces were collected on day 14. The study comprised 41 untreated foals as controls. Animals that have FEC of ≥100 eggs per gram (EPG) were used to measure anthelmintic efficacy. Parascaris spp. populations were considered susceptible when faecal egg count reduction (FECR) was ≥95% associated with a lower 95% confidence limit (LCL) >90%, suspected resistant when FECR ≤90% or LCL <90% and resistant when FECR <90% and LCL <90%.

Results: Prevalence of Parascaris spp. infection was 53% (179/341 horses). Anthelmintic resistance to Parascaris spp. were highest following fenbendazole (55% of farms and 65% of foals) and to a lower extent following ivermectin or the combination of abamectin and praziquantel which comprised 27% of farms (and 46% of foals) and 18% of farms (and 10% of foals), respectively.

Conclusion: These data indicate that anthelmintics-resistant Parascaris spp. populations are present on horse farms in Saudi Arabia.  相似文献

Summary

The efficacy of the morantel sustained‐release bolus (MSRB) in controlling gastrointestinal parasites in first‐season grazing calves was evaluated on a dairy cattle farm in Belgium. The calves grazed a pasture which had been used by bolus‐treated animals in the three previous years. The effect of bolus administration was determined with respect to live weight gain, faecal egg shedding, herbage larval counts, serum pepsinogen levels and ELISA antibody titres.

In spite of an incomplete reduction of faecal egg shedding during the first months of the grazing season, bolus administration resulted in the prevention of parasitic gastro‐enteritis in the calves. A weight gain advantage of 35,2 kg of the bolus‐treated animals over the controls was noted already at two months after turnout. This weight gain advantage was maintained until housing.

The usefulness of serum pepsinogen values and ELISA antibody titres as parameters in prevention experiments is stressed. Both serological parameters gave more information concerning infection level than did the faecal egg output and the herbage larval counts.  相似文献

Summary

Three rectal faecal samples were taken at 24‐hour intervals from 136 horses in order to investigate whether multiple faecal cultures yield a greater number of Salmonella‐positive horses compared to single faecal cultures. Of these 136 horses, 89 were suspected of salmonellosis on clinical grounds and 47 belonged to a control group. From the ‘Salmonella suspected’ group, 22 horses (25 %) were Salmonella positive on one or more occasions. Only twelve of these 22 positive horses (55 %) were positive at first sampling. Of the control group, only three horses (6 %) were positive for Salmonella. Thirty‐one (69 %) of the 45 positive cultures from the ‘Salmonella suspected’ group were found only after enrichment in Selenite broth. From the results of the present study it is concluded that multiple faecal cultures are superior to single faecal cultures for diagnosing clinical salmonellosis in horses and that there is no relation between the course of the disease and whether the Salmonellae were cultured directly or indirectly, after enrichment in Selenite broth. Salmonellae were cultured from the faeces of horses treated with antibiotics before their referral, even when the isolated strain was sensitive to the antimicrobial drug used by the practitioner.  相似文献

Summary

The prevalence of S. bovis in the intestinal tract of healthy racing pigeons was determined. Crop and cloaca swab samples obtained from 810 pigeons from 14 different lofts and from 122 pigeons that were presented for routine health control were examined for the presence of S. bovis. Pooled faecal samples were also obtained from pigeons in 82 different pigeon lofts. S. bovis was isolated from crop or cloaca samples of approximately 40 % of pigeons of all ages by direct culture and from 80 % of the pooled faecal samples by enrichment culture.

In a longitudinal study, crop and cloaca samples were collected every 3 months from pigeons in seven different pigeon lofts. The prevalence of S. bovis in these pigeons ranged from 0 to 100 %. The carriage rate was not related to the season or to the age of the pigeons.

The prevalence of S. bovis in organ lesions of pigeons examined at necropsy was investigated over a 35‐month period. S. bovis was isolated from 10 % of the birds examined. The incidence of S. bovis septicaemia was significantly higher in January to August than in September to December. It was concluded that S. bovis is an opportunistic pathogenic agent in pigeons.  相似文献
