Objective To evaluate the surgical results and fertility of mares bred at various intervals relative to surgical management of urovagina. Design Sixty-one mares underwent surgery to correct vesicovaginal reflux. Surgery was performed at varying times relative to breeding and postoperative fertility was evaluated. Results Five mares were lost to follow-up and a further four were electively not bred. Of the remaining 52 mares, seasonal pregnancy and live foaling rates were 67% (35/52) and 54% (26/48), respectively. When mares were bred in the same cycle as the surgery, the first cycle following surgery, the second cycle following surgery or the following breeding season after surgery the seasonal pregnancy rates were 89% (8/9), 63% (10/16), 67% (2/3) and 63% (15/24), respectively. After censoring four mares that died of natural causes pre-foaling, the foaling rates were 88% (7/8), 50% (7/14), 0% (0/3), 52% (12/23), respectively. All mares bred in the same cycle as surgery or in the next cycle were bred once only that season, so the pregnancy rate per cycle of 72% (18/25) was identical to the seasonal pregnancy rate. Conclusions Good fertility (comparable to a normal population of mares) was achieved following surgery and the results suggest that delaying breeding until the following breeding season is not necessary. In addition, breeding in the same cycle as surgical repair is a previously unreported technique that should be considered to maintain a yearly foaling interval.  相似文献

In the selection procedure to acquire a breeding licence, 3-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallions have to undergo a breeding soundness test It is questioned whether this evaluation is predictive of the stallion's fertility results in the first breeding season. Therefore, semen parameters at the beginning of their first breeding season were evaluated and correlated to nonreturn at first cycle and foaling rate of mares bred by stallions (n = 13). The total number of mares inseminated with chilled semen from those stallions was 1055. Semen parameters were recorded on 2 ejaculates, collected 1 h apart. Percentage progressive sperm motility, % morphologically normal from unstained spermatozoa (MNA), % sperm cells with abnormal acrosomes and the total number of spermatozoa were correlated with first cycle nonreturn rate and foaling rate. Mean motility at evaluation was 72 +/- 6%. Mean MNA was 62 +/- 13%. Mean first cycle nonreturn rate and foaling rate were 58 +/- 15% and 69 +/- 12%, respectively. A significantly positive correlation (P<0.05) was found between the MNA and first cycle nonreturn rates. Foaling rates were not significantly correlated with semen characteristics and first cycle nonreturn rates. In conclusion, the breeding soundness test is of predictive value for the breeding results in the breeding season following the test. First cycle nonreturn rates reflect fertilising capacity better than foaling rates.  相似文献

The case records of 47 mares with third-degree perineal lacerations or rectovestibular fistulae were examined to evaluate their fertility following surgical repair. Of 32 mares bred, 24 became pregnant, suggesting that surgical repair is indicated in any mare with sufficient genetic potential. Perineal trauma after surgical repair was recorded in 3 of 20 mares at subsequent parturition.  相似文献

Occasionally Caslick vulvoplasty does not resolve the condition of pneumovagina. This study aimed at evaluating the validity of surgical construction of artificial vestibular valve in standing mares. For 10 sedated mares with history of chronic pneumovagina, upside down U-form incision was made on the vestibular mucosa and sutured together to form a large valve after the cover. The surgical site was opened for another cover or foaling and sutured again. The condition of air aspiration into the vagina was monitored ultrasonographically after the surgery. In 9 of the 10 mares, the signs of pneumovagina improved after the surgery and 8 mares had normal foaling the next year. In addition, all mares which had the second surgery after the surgical site was incised for the second cover or foaling were conceived and had normal foaling in the following breeding season. The results revealed that construction of the vestibular valve can be a potential surgical option for the treatment of persistent pneumovagina.  相似文献

A field study utilizing 145 mares of various age and breeding status was conducted to determine reproductive performance under native range conditions with only limited supplemental feeding. All mares had an average initial body condition score of 4.5 and a final score of 5.1 by the time breeding was completed and mares returned to pasture. Average foaling rate was 80%, and mares that had not conceived during the previous breeding season had a foaling rate of 94%, which was higher (P<.05) than 74% for lactating mares. Mares 16 years and older had a significantly lower foaling rate (P<.05) than younger mares. Old mares that were lactating at time of breeding had only a 37% foaling rate, which was less (P<.05) than for young lactating mares. The 94 mares bred by natural cover or artificial insemination that actually foaled required 1.43 cycles per conception. Lactating mares in the oldest age group required more cycles per conception (P<.05) than open mares, and these older, lactating mares also required more cycles per conception than younger mares with foals at side. Those mares diagnosed as pregnant or open at 45 days post breeding had a pregnancy rate of 97%. Average pregnancy loss for all mares was 7.7%. These data indicate that lactating mares in moderate body condition tended to skip a breeding season and that a body condition score of 5 was only marginally acceptable, especially in the case of lactating mares. A retrospective study on the reproductive performance of 401 artificially inseminated trotter mares during six breeding seasons is presented. Mares, 279 post partum (PP) and 122 maiden and barren, or nonlactating (NL), were inseminated with fresh semen obtained from four fertile stallions of the same breed. Pregnancy rate (PR) of mares inseminated at the foal heat (182/253, 71.9%) was lower, but not significantly different, than the PR (22/26, 84.6%) of mares inseminated for the first time at the second post partum cycle and similar to the PR at the first and second cycle of NL mares (95/112, 77.8% and 25/33, 75.7%, respectively). PR of mares inseminated at the foal heat was higher, but nonsignificantly different, from PR of the post partum mares not pregnant after artificial insemination (AI) at foal heat and inseminated again at the following estrous cycle. The PR after AI at the foal heat was significantly higher than the PR when the AI was performed at the third or later cycle in NL mares (71.9% vs 22.2%, P<0.01). The estrus cycle/pregnancy ratio for the PP mares inseminated, for the first time at the foal heat or at the second heat and for NL mares was, respectively, 1.4, 1.2, 1.3 at first cycle and 1.4, 1.3 and 1.4 at the end of the season or when mares left the stud. The proportion of open mares at the end of the season or when leaving the stud was 7.1% (18/253), 3.8% (1/26) and 4.1% (5/122) for PP mares first inseminated at the first or second post partum cycle and for NL mares, respectively; the total rate of open mares was 6% (24/401). The foaling rate (FR) following conception at the foal heat (72.1%) was not statistically different from the FR following conception at any other cycle (50–100%). Based on the absence of significant differences in fertility at the first post partum estrus cycle versus any other estrus cycle, we conclude that breeding at the foal heat should be advisable.  相似文献

The case records of 19 mares undergoing caudal ventral midline celiotomy for cesarean section were reviewed. Surgical exposure to the uterus was good, and the incisions healed by first intention in surviving mares. Seventeen mares (89%) survived to time of hospital discharge. Six foals (32%) were delivered alive, of which three were euthanatized because of severe deformity (1 died on day 6 and 2 survived to time of discharge). The most frequent postoperative complications were abdominal pain (13 mares), anemia (10 mares), and retained placenta (6 mares). Sixteen mares were bred during at least one season after the cesarean section and eight (50%) produced at least one foal. The collective foaling rate for these mares, bred a total of 25 seasons, was 36%. Only one mare bred during the same year as the surgery produced a live foal. The collective foaling rate for mares bred after the year of the surgery was 50%.  相似文献

Reproductive performance and factors that decrease the pregnancy rate in heavy draft horses bred at the foal heat were investigated. The study was based on a total of 422 mares varying from 4 to 20 years in age, which had foaled during the period 1991 to 1994. Over the four years, the percentage of the mares bred at the foal heat was 62.6% and the pregnancy rate was 60.2%. The pregnancy rate following breeding at the foal heat in 1991 (67.7%) was significantly higher than that in 1992 (44.1%). Significant correlation was observed between the pregnancy rate and the mean placental retention time and also between the pregnancy rate and the mean temperature during the winter season. When compared on a monthly basis, the pregnancy rate following breeding at the foal heat in February was 53.3% and in May, 48.2%. The mean number of covers per mare at the foal heat was 2.3; this figure decreased to 1.8 for those bred in May. The mean number of days from parturition to the first breeding date was 11.3 days and the number of days from parturition to the last breeding day at the foal heat was 14.0 days. The number of days from parturition to the last breeding day at the foal heat decreased to 12.5 days in May. The latter may have been influenced by factors involving the stallion. When compared on a monthly basis, the mean placental retention time was longest in January (219 min.) following which it decreased gradually up to mid-summer. The mean placental retention time of mares which were not bred at the foal heat was significantly longer (197 min.) than in mares bred at the foaling heat (143 min.) and also in mares that conceived following breeding at the foal heat (135 min.). The pregnancy rate was less in mares bred shortly after parturition. The findings of this study would suggest that certain factors decrease the pregnancy rate in mares bred at the foal heat. The stress of low temperature in winter, prolonged placental retention time, breeding too early after parturition and factors pertaining to individual stallions may be involved. Expulsion of the placenta as soon as possible after foaling and appropriate breeding timing are significant factors that can influence the pregnancy rate following breeding at the foal heat.  相似文献

Contents Fifty thoroughbred mares, located at Central-Southern Brazil near Sao Paulo (13 anestrous maiden, 18 anestrous barren mares and 19 postpartum mares) were treated with one to three injections, 48 hrs apart, of 2 mg of the novel PGF analog K 11941*, during the early part of the breeding season. Early season anestrus in these problem mares was compounded by the adverse effects of a drought. Plasma progesterone determinations revealed unexpectedly elevated plasma progesterone levels in 61.5% of the maiden mares, in 77.8% of the barren mares and in 68.4% of the postpartum mares (20 to 25 days postpartum). Treatments with K 11941 initiated luteolysis, heat and ovulations in 91.4, 45.5 an 63.3% of these mares, respectively, but initiated also heat and ovulation in 13% and 33% of mares with baseline progesterone levels. Treatments initiated covert and overt cyclic functions in 17 and 12 of those animals which did not conceive immediately. Fifteen animals with recurrent anestrus received further treatment with K 11941. Ten mares cycling silently were force bred when palpations indicated ovulatory follicles, and 7 conceived. Of the 50 mares treated, 38 became pregnant (76%: maiden mares: 76.9%; barren mares: 77.8% and postpartum mares: 73.7%) with breeding indices of 1.9, 1.36 und 1.57, respectively; and 37 mares gave birth to a live foal (74%), At the same stud, 138 control mares had a foaling rate of 82.6%.  相似文献

The findings of a retrospective survey of 1393 Thoroughbred mares visiting 22 studfarms in the Newmarket region of the UK during the 1998 mating season were compared with those of a similar study undertaken in 1983. The effects of mare age and status, stallion, month of mating, application of uterine treatments and other parameters on the rates of singleton and twin conception and subsequent pregnancy losses were analysed. Mare age and status significantly affected the per cycle pregnancy rate and the incidence of pregnancy loss. Overall, the mean number of matings per oestrus was 1.12 and the mean number of times a mare was mated until diagnosed pregnant at 15 days after ovulation was 1.88. An overall mean per cycle pregnancy rate of 59.9% at 15 days after ovulation resulted in 94.8% of the mated mares being pregnant at least once at 15 days after ovulation. This high initial pregnancy rate fell to 89.7% by Day 35 and 87.5% by the time of the October pregnancy test; 82.7% of the mares surveyed gave birth to a live foal at term, which compares favourably with the proportion of mares foaling in 1983 (77%). However, despite improvements in the foaling rates over the last 15 years, the overall rate of pregnancy failure remains high and represents a major loss to the Thoroughbred breeding industry.  相似文献

Reason for performing study: To improve efficiency at the farm level, a better understanding of how farm management factors impact reproductive performance is important. Objective: To assess reproductive efficiency and effectiveness among Thoroughbred mares in central Kentucky. Methods: A cohort of 1011 mares on 13 farms in central Kentucky was followed during the 2004 mating and 2005 foaling season. Information on farm level practices was collected via interviews with farm managers. Reproductive records were collected for each mare mated to obtain information on mare characteristics. The influence of mare age and status (maiden, foaling, barren) on Days 15 and 40 post mating pregnancy rates, foaling rates and total effective length of the mating season were assessed. The influence of stallion book size on reproductive performance measures was also examined. Results: Per season pregnancy rates on Days 15 and 40 post mating and live foal rate were 92.1, 89.3 and 78.3%, respectively. Per cycle rates for the same time periods were 64.0, 58.3 and 50.8%. There were no significant associations between stallion book size and reproductive performance outcomes. The mean s.d. interval from the beginning of the mating season to the last mating of the mare was 36.5 ± 26.1 days. Conclusions: Mare age had a significant impact on efficiency of becoming pregnant, maintaining pregnancy and producing a live foal. Overall, fertility did not decrease among stallions with the largest book sizes. Total interval length of the mating season can be reduced if managers ensure maiden and barren mares are mated at the beginning of the season and foaling mares are mated at the earliest oestrus after acceptable uterine involution has been achieved. Potential relevance: Measures identified in the study can be used by owners, farm managers and veterinarians to improve mare reproductive performance and identify parameters to assist with the implementation of effective culling practices.  相似文献

The records of 1630 mare years from 6 Thoroughbred stud farms in south eastern Australia were analysed for the years 1981 to 1986. Overall pregnancy and foaling rates were 83.9% and 69.3%, respectively. When calculated per served oestrous cycle, pregnancy and foaling rates were 54.7% and 43.1%, respectively. Pregnancy and foaling rates were higher (P < 0.001) for mares 3 to 10 years of age than for older mares. There was no difference in the pregnancy rates of maiden, barren and foaling mares. The foaling rate was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in mares that became pregnant during the first served oestrous cycle (77.8%) than in mares that needed two served oestrous cycles to become pregnant (65.4%). Of all diagnosed pregnancies, 19.5% were not completed. Pregnancy loss was lower (P < 0.05) in maiden (12.4%) than in barren (19.7%) or foaling (20.9%) mares. Twins were diagnosed in 7.8% of all pregnancies. If one conceptus was lost without external interference, 84.1% of pregnancies went to term. If one conceptus was manually crushed, 55.9% of pregnancies were maintained. If prostaglandin was used to terminate twin pregnancies, 60% of mares so treated produced foals the following year.  相似文献

Abstract

AIMS: To examine the gestation lengths and occurrence of daytime foaling of Standardbred mares foaling outdoors at stud farms in Southland, New Zealand (latitude 45?S).

METHODS: Data were collected prospectively at two commercial Standardbred stud farms (Farms A and B), during the 2008/9 and 2009/10 breeding seasons (October to February). For each foaling, the identity of the mare, date and time of foaling, gender of foal, time the mare passed the fetal membranes, time the foal stood, and foaling problems including dystocias, were recorded. The effect of farm, season, gender of foal, month of artificial insemination (AI) or foaling, age and parity of mare on gestation length, percentage of mares foaling during daylight hours, and percentage of foalings recorded as dystocia, were examined.

RESULTS: A total of 614 foaling records were obtained from 507 mares. For 594 foalings with complete records, mean gestation length was 349 (SE 0.5) days. Mean gestation length was shorter for fillies (347.8 (SE 0.6) days) than colts (350.3 (SE 0.6) days) p = 0.021) and decreased with month of AI, from October to February (p = 0.001). The time of foaling was bimodally distributed with the primary peak around 0200 hours and a secondary smaller peak around 1300 hours. The percentage of mares foaling in daylight was lower on Farm A (69/285 (24%)) than Farm B (128/313 (41%)) (p = 0.001). Colt foals were less likely to be born during the day than fillies (OR = 0.63; (95% CI = 0.44–0.88); p = 0.008), but there was no effect of age or parity of mare or month of foaling (p>0.05).

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Mean gestation length of mares in this study was longer than that previously reported from other countries. Longer gestation length decreases the time available for these mares to get back into foal in the same season. It is important that managers take this into account and ensure optimum conditions for conception; breeding at the first postpartum oestrus may be essential. There were more mares foaling in daylight hours on one stud than has previously been reported. Under these conditions mares should be monitored for foaling during daytime as well as at night.  相似文献

Two cloned mares, produced from the same sample of skin fibroblasts, were bred during four breeding seasons from their second year of age, as embryo donors, in exactly the same conditions, using the same stallions for both cloned mares. The aim of this study was to test the embryo donor potential of cloned mares and to compare the results obtained from two cloned mares of the same mare with other embryo donor mares (n = 31–39 per breeding season) at the same stud. For both cloned mares, 19 embryos were recovered by 43 collection attempts (44%) (7/22 for one; 12/21 for the other), 16 (84%) pregnancies (5/7 for one, 11/12 for the other) were obtained at day 14 post-ovulation (D14), and 12 (3/7 for one; 9/12 for the other) foals were born. One cloned mare was a less efficient donor mare than the other (p < .05), In control donor mares, 623 embryo collections were performed, with a recovery rate (80%—496/623) significantly higher than for cloned mares. The recovery rate in the subpopulation of 2–5-year-old control donor mares (same age of cloned mares) (89%—127/143) and The recovery rate in the subpopulation of 12 control mares bred with the seven same stallions as clones (55%—17/31), were both higher than for cloned mare (p < .05). The success rate of transfer was not different between embryos produced by cloned mares (84%—16/19) and those produced by control donor mares (79%—392/496). However, the foaling rate per embryo collection was significantly lower for cloned mares (28%—12/43) than for control donor mares (52% - 325/623) (p < .05).  相似文献

A retrospective study of 3456 deliveries was conducted from the records of four Standardbred broodmare farms where mares were bred by artificial insemination and maintained under close veterinary supervision. Retained fetal membranes (RFM) were observed in 10.6% of the deliveries. Retained fetal membranes occurred more frequently (p < 0.05) after dystocia and in mares which had RFM the previous year. Retained fetal membranes after normal foaling had no significant effect on the reproductive performance (pregnancy rate, pregnancy loss rate, or foaling rate), nor on the general health of the mares, regardless of the duration of RFM (3 to 144 hours). Postfoaling laminitis was not observed. Oxytocin therapy of mares with RFM starting at two hours postpartum significantly reduced the incidence of RFM ≥ 8 hours. Mares with RFM which had received intrauterine antimicrobials between foaling and first breeding had a foaling rate similar to mares with RFM which had not received intrauterine therapy.  相似文献

Alfaprostal (K 11941), a novel prostaglandin F2 alpha analogue was clinically tested in 24 dioestrous mares, 40 anoestrous mares and 31 postpartum mares, all being given 2 or 3 mg intramuscularly. Blood samples were taken for the determination of plasma progesterone levels and the objective confirmation of luteolytic drug effects. Two hundred and thirty-six mares at the same location were used for comparisons of the rates of pregnancy, early embryonic loss and foaling. Alfaprostol was found to act as a potent luteolytic agent with good oestrus induction, follicular development and normal conception (72.6%) and foaling rate (65.3%). No side effects were observed. Treatments commenced early in the season (October), when only 35% of the anoestrous mares showed elevated progesterone levels, but in 80% of anoestrous mares with baseline progesterone levels, alfaprostol initiated heat and ovulation followed by normal fertility.  相似文献

Breeding records of 48 Thoroughbred and Standardbred mares treated with native GnRH (500μg im, bid) during February—April, 1999 or 2000, on 7 farms in central Kentucky were retrospectively examined. Treated mares were classified as being in anestrus or early transition (n=42; if no signs of estrus occurred within 31/2 weeks and the largest follicle remained ≤25 mm in diameter or the first larger follicle(s) of the season regressed without ovulating), or were classified as being in late transition (n=6; if follicular growth achieved 30-40 mm diameter but ovulation had not yet occurred during the breeding season). Thirty-eight mares (38/48; 79%) ovulated in 13.7 ± 7.4 days. Interval to ovulation was negatively associated with size of follicles at onset of native GnRH therapy (P < 0.01). Per cycle pregnancy rate was 53% (19/36 mares bred). Ovulation inducing drugs were administered to 32 of the native GnRH treated mares (2500 units hCG intravenously, n = 20; deslorelin implant [Ovuplant™] subcutaneously, n=12), while 6 mares were not administered any additional drugs to induce ovulation. Per cycle pregnancy rate did not differ among mares treated only with native GnRH (2/5 mares bred; 40% PR), mares treated with native GnRH plus hCG (12/19 mares bred; 63% PR), or mares treated with native GnRH plus Ovuplant™ (5/12 mares bred; 42% PR) (P > 0.10). Additional treatment with either hCG or Ovuplant™ did not alter mean follicle size at ovulation or interovulatory interval (P > 0.10). The proportion of interovulatory intervals > 25 days was not different between mares receiving no additional treatment to induce ovulation (0/4; 0%) compared to mares receiving hCG to induce ovulation (3/8; 38%) (P > 0.10), but the proportion of interovulatory intervals > 25 days was greater for mares receiving Ovuplant™ to induce ovulation (5/7; 71%) compared to mares receiving no additional treatment to induce ovulation (P < 0.05). The proportion of mares with extended interovulatory intervals (i.e., > 25 days) did not differ between mares with follicles < 15 mm diameter (4/8, 50%) and those with follicles > 15 mm diameter (3/11, 27%) at onset of native GnRH treatment (P > 0.10). While concurrent untreated controls were not used in this study, the 79% response rate to twice daily administration of native GnRH is in agreement with other reports using pulsatile or constant infusion as methods of administration, confirming therapy can hasten follicular development and first ovulation of the breeding season. As with previous reports, follicle size at onset of treatment is an important determinant of interval from onset of native GnRH therapy to ovulation. Use of hCG or Ovuplant™ did not enhance ovulatory response in native GnRH treated mares. Use of Ovuplant™ during native GnRH therapy may increase the incidence of post-treatment anestrus in mares not becoming pregnant.  相似文献

This study on extended, cooled stallion spermatozoa aimed to compare the ability of three extenders to maintain sperm motility during 24 h of preservation, and to describe pregnancy and foaling rates after artificial insemination (AI) of stallion spermatozoa stored and transported in the extender chosen from the in vitro study. After 6 and 24 h of preservation, motility, both subjective and evaluated by the motility analyzer (total, progressive and rapid), was lower in non-fat, dried skim milk-glucose than in both other extenders: dried skim milk-glucose added to 2% centrifuged egg yolk, and ultra high temperature treated skim milk-sugar-saline solution added to 2% centrifuged egg yolk (INRA82-Y). Rapid spermatozoa and sperm velocity parameters, after 24 h, were significantly higher in INRA82-Y. In the fertility trial, semen collected from three Maremmano stallions, diluted in INRA82-Y, and transported in a refrigerated Styrofoam box, was used to inseminate 56 mares of the same breed. Pregnancy rates after the first cycle and per breeding season were significantly higher for the 31 mares inseminated in three AI centres (54.8 and 80.6%, respectively) than for the 25 mares inseminated at the breeder's facilities (28.0 and 52.0%). Foaling rates were not significantly different between the AI centres mares (54.8%) and the other mares (44.0%). In conclusion, INRA82-Y yielded satisfactory pregnancy and foaling rates, especially when employed in the more controlled situation of an AI centre, and can therefore be included among those available for cooled stallion semen preservation.  相似文献

The results of a study on endometrial biopsies obtained from 700 infertile mares are reported. Infiltrative endometritis was present in 51% consisting of a combination of an acute and chronic cellular response in 6%, mild chronic infiltrations in 35% and moderate to severe chronic infiltrations in 10%.

Demonstrable endometrial fibrosis was found in 88% of the mares with the majority having mild (51%) or moderate (35%) changes. The age of the mares and the average number of years barren gradually increased with the severity of endometrial fibrosis, as did the combined incidence of fetal loss (early embryonic death and abortion) during the three year period preceding the biopsy.

A significant decrease in foaling percentage for the year following the biopsy was observed with increasing severity of endometrial fibrosis. Chisquare analysis projected a decrease in foaling rate of 22.8% for each category increase in severity.

The number of years barren and the farm management system used also had a significant effect on foaling probability. The foaling rates for mares that were bred artificially (82%) under strict veterinary supervision using an extender incorporating gentamicin were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than for mares bred in a conventional manner under average management conditions (48%).

It was concluded that endometrial biopsy is a valuable diagnostic and prognostic technique. When the degree of fibrosis is used to predict foaling probability, the number of years barren and the breeding method to be used should also be considered to arrive at a more accurate prediction.
