The effects of short-term thermomechanical (STTM) densification temperature and pressure on the changes in surface roughness, wettability, mass loss (ML), thickness and density of alder, beech, birch, and pine wood veneer with low moisture content (~5%) were investigated. The anatomical structure of veneers was also observed. Veneer sheets were densified using pressure levels of 4, 8 and 12 MPa at three temperatures: 100°C, 150°C and 200°C for 4 min. The results were compared with those of the non-densified veneers. The obtained results show that STTM densification of veneers similarly to long-term densification of solid wood causes irreversible changes in their properties. The STTM-densified veneer surfaces became smoother and more hydrophobic, ML increased slightly while roughness and thickness values decreased significantly, the cell lumens collapsed and a certain amount of fractures in cell walls developed with increasing densification temperature and pressure. All of the investigated wood species showed higher density values after densification. It was found that an even STTM densification of veneers provides stable properties under normal atmosphere conditions; in particular, the thickness and contact angle values were stable for 24 hours after densification, which is an important consideration for industrial applications.  相似文献

The availability of coarse woody debris (CWD) and distribution of dead trees into categories of mortality (dead standing, broken and uprooted) were investigated in north-temperate forests of central Europe (Lithuania). The studied area comprised 188.7 ha and included 18 different stands 40–130 years of age with a variety of tree species (spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn.), birch (Betula pendula Roth and B. pubescens Ehrh.), aspen (Populus tremula L.), oak (Quercus robur L.), forest types (caricus-sphagnum, vaccinium-myrtillus, oxalis, myrtillus-oxalis, caricus-calamagrostis) and edaphic conditions (peaty, sandy, loamy soils of different moisture). The stands were excluded from wood harvesting for at least 30 years. A total of 11 365 dead trees (over 10 cm in DBH) or 6160.7 m3 of dead wood was found (60.2 trees/ha and 32.6 m3/ha). The volume of CWD per hectare was larger in older stands (rS=0.78, P<0.01). Tree mortality during the last 2 years consisted of 482 trees and 381 m3, or 1.28 trees/ha×year and 1.01 m3/ha×year. In 25–33% of cases it was wind-related. Uprooted and broken trees were of larger DBH than dead standing. The distribution into the categories of mortality was strongly dependent on tree species (chi-square test, d.f.=10,P=0). Dead standing dominated in CWD of pine and alder. Broken trees comprised almost a half in CWD of aspen, and about one-third in birch, alder and oak. Uprooting most often occurred in spruce, aspen and birch. Edaphic conditions and stand age had a pronounced impact on distribution into mortality categories for spruce (chi-square test, d.f.=20, P<0.00001) and pine (d.f.=8, P≤0.0003). On peat soil, only a minority of trees of both pine and spruce was uprooted, and standing dead prevailed. In CWD of spruce and pine, the proportions of both dead standing and broken decreased and that of uprooted trees increased on mineral soils of higher moisture and bulk density in older stands. By contrast, uprooting in birch and alder occurred less often on more wet sites, where the proportions of standing snags were higher. A total of 41 species of wood-decomposing polypores were found in the study area. Among those, 10 (24%) were of conservation value.  相似文献

The growth, aboveground biomass production and nutrient accumulation in black alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn.), silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) plantations during 7 years after planting were investigated on reclaimed oil shale mining areas in Northeast Estonia with the aim to assess the suitability of the studied species for the reclamation of post-mining areas. The present study revealed changes in soil properties with increasing stand age. Soil pH and P concentration decreased and soil N concentration increased with stand age. The largest height and diameter of trees, aboveground biomass and current annual production occurred in the black alder stands. In the 7-year-old stands the aboveground biomass of black alder (2100 trees ha−1) was 2563 kg ha−1, in silver birch (1017 trees ha−1) and Scots pine (3042 trees ha−1) stands respective figures were 161 and 1899 kg ha−1. The largest amounts of N, P, K accumulated in the aboveground part were in black alder stands. In the 7th year, the amount of N accumulated in the aboveground biomass of black alder stand was 36.1 kg ha−1, the amounts of P and K were 3.0 and 8.8 kg ha−1, respectively. The larger amounts of nutrients in black alder plantations are related to the larger biomass of stands. The studied species used N and P with different efficiency for the production of a unit of biomass. Black alder and silver birch needed more N and P for biomass production, and Scots pine used nutrients most efficiently. The present study showed that during 7 years after planting, the survival and productivity of black alder were high. Therefore black alder is a promising tree species for the reclamation of oil shale post-mining areas.  相似文献

Data describing the growth, survival and stem form of: a) Europeancontinental, and b) British provenances of trees native to Britainwere collated from Forestry Commission records. The growth ratesof European continental provenances of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris),silver birch (Betulo pendula), sessile oak (Quercus petraea)and common alder (Alnus glutinosa) were inferior to those ofBritish provenances in 90 per cent of cases. European provenancesof these species also showed inferior survival. The growth ratesof continental provenances of beech (Fagus sylvatica) were superiorto British provenances in about 50 per cent of cases, provenancesfrom northern France, Belgium and Holland being the fastestgrowing. Relationships between the relative height growth offoreign provenances and latitude were demonstrated for Scotspine, silver birch and beech (relative height growth = the heightgrowth of a foreign provenance expressed relative to that ofBritish provenances at the same site). The continental provenancesthat grew best originated at 0–4° south of the latitudesof the planting sites. Relative height growth decreased bothnorth and south of these latitudes. In the case of oak, relativeheight growth did not vary widely between origins. The survivalof continental provenances of Scots pine was particularly pooron exposed upland sites. The stem form of British provenancesof Scots pine was intermediate between Fennoscandian provenancesand provenances from the rest of Europe. In oak and beech therewas generally little difference in stem form between Britishand continental provenances, but the best continental provenances(Belgian beech; French oak) were most reliable. The growth andsurvival of native trees is interpreted in the light of thepost-glacial history of these species. The implications regardingthe continued use of seed of native hardwoods imported fromcontinental Europe are discussed.  相似文献

In declining broadleaf forests in western Ukraine, several Phytophthora species including P. plurivora, P. bilorbang, P. polonica, P. gonapodyides and P. cactorum were recovered using soil baiting assays and identified using morphological and molecular methods. Pathogenicity tests of selected isolates were performed on black alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaerth.) and silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) to assess susceptibility of these two tree species to the newly detected Phytophthora species. Phytophthora plurivora, P. bilorbang and P. polonica showed higher pathogenicity in both alder and birch compared to the other tested Phytophthora species.  相似文献

This study examined effects of surface modification with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on adhesive bond performance in birch veneer bonded with phenol–formaldehyde resin. The veneer was treated with 5% of H2O2 at 80 °C in the presence of alkali with the objective of improving adhesive bond performance and reducing the resin demand. The effects of the surface modification were determined by surface color measured with a spectrophotometer, bond performance tests with ABES (automated bonding evaluation system) and surface hydrophobicity with sessile contact angle measurements. Results demonstrated that veneer surface became significantly whiter, which also increased in lightness and decreased in redness and yellowness. ABES test revealed that a remarkable increase in bond performance in the treated veneer and the maximum bond strength with the treatment at 60 min, which was nearly twice as high as reference sample (5.42 → 9.94 N/mm2), was obtained. A notable decrease in contact angle measurements was also observed in the treated veneers (0° in 0.5 s). The surface modification of birch veneer with H2O2 + alkali demonstrated greater potential for the improvement of physical characteristics in veneer surface. Other aspects of H2O2 consumption during the treatment are also discussed.  相似文献

Denitrifying enzyme activity (DEA) is defined as N2O production rate over the first eight hours of anaerobic incubation of soil slurries at 15°C with added nitrate and acetylene. Organic fraction explained 81 % of the spatial variation in DEA among soil horizons of beech (Fagus), alder (Alnus), and spruce (Picea) forests, and spruce ciearcuts. Nitrate and pH limit denitrification in anaerobic O horizons at 15°C. Thick, poorly drained O horizons, such as in alder forest, have a high capability for denitrification. Failure to recover all added nitrate in O horizon incubations suggested both production of unmeasured NO and dissimilatory reduction of nitrate to ammonium. In mineral horizons, N2O production was small and could not be increased by increasing nitrate, carbon, pH, and phosphorus; some other factor appears to prevent significant denitrifier activity in acid forest mineral horizons.  相似文献

Abstract

The response of common alder [Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn.] and downy birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh.) seeds to germination temperature was examined following chilling and priming. Seeds of two seed lots of each species were subjected to combinations of chilling (4±1°C) and priming (20°C) treatments in fully imbibed (FI) state or a lower target seed moisture content (TMC) level (30% and 35% in alder and birch, respectively). After treatment, the seeds were allowed to germinate for 56 days at constant temperatures of 7.5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30°C. The response to temperature and pretreatment differed between species, but the effect was consistent in each seed lot within each species. In alder, the TMC seeds germinated well across the full range of temperatures, whereas there was an optimum temperature (22–23°C) for seeds given the FI pretreatment. Priming had no significant effect on the germination response of the TMC seeds in alder, but priming greatly improved germination in the FI seeds, especially at the lower germination temperatures (optimum 18–19°C). In contrast, in birch, the TMC seeds germinated better across the full temperature range, but the optimal germination temperature (15°C) was the same for all seed pretreatments. Priming improved germination in both the FI and TMC seeds in birch.  相似文献

A landscape model (LANDIS) was used to study the long-term forest dynamics under five planting types (100% larch (P1); 70% larch and 30% Mongolian Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica) (P2); 50% larch and 50% Mongolian Scotch pine (P3); 30% larch and 70% Mongolian Scotch pine (P4); 100% Mongolian Scotch pine (P5)), which were also employed in severely burned area under current planting intensity, and under natural regeneration (as a comparison) in Tuqiang Forest Bureau in the northern slopes of Great Xing’an Mountains after the catastrophic fire in 1987. Results showed that different planting types had a significant influence on the abundance of larch, Mongolian Scotch pine and white birch. The abundance of larch increased with time, whereas the abundance of Mongolian Scotch pine was in a converse way. The abundance of larch and Mongolian Scotch pine under these planting scenarios was higher than that under natural regeneration. Under these planting scenarios, the abundance of larch increased with the increasing proportion of larch, and the abundance of Mongolian Scotch pine was in a similar way. Contrary to larch and Mongolian Scotch pine, white birch had higher abundance under natural regeneration than that under these planting scenarios. Also, the different proportions of larch and Mongolian Scotch pine had an influence on the abundance of white birch. White birch had higher abundance with the increasing proportion of Mongolian Scotch pine. As for the total abundance of larch and Mongolian Scotch pine, the difference was not significant under P2, P3 and P4 scenarios, but was higher than that under P1 and P5 scenarios, which indicated that individual-species planting should not be used in the forest landscape. __________ Translated from Chinese Journal of Applied Ecology, 2006, 17(5): 855–861 [译自: 应用生态学报]  相似文献

In this study, birch (Betula pendula L.) veneers were simultaneously densified and dried using a contact drying method at pressures of 1.5 and 3 MPa at 130 °C and compared with veneer dried in a laboratory-scale convective type dryer. Compression rate, thickness swelling, and the density profiles of the veneers were investigated. Furthermore, the microstructure of densified veneers was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A maximum veneer compression rate of 9 % was achieved at a pressure of 3 MPa. Under these conditions, the veneers were, on average, densified from 504 to 574 kg m?3 (approximately 14 %). After water soaking, full set-recovery—recovery to the initial thickness—occurred. However, the swelling rate was lower for the densified veneer. Density profiles measurements showed that densification occurs throughout the veneers. The SEM images showed that the surface of the densified veneers were smoother, whilst no cracks were detected due to densification. Densification seemed to occur in vessels. Typically, rays were bent when there was a vessel nearby.  相似文献

Beech woodland can be restored by direct planting of beech (Fagussylvatica L.) seedlings in abandoned areas, but this methodis generally avoided in forestry because of the growth difficultiesof beech in full-light conditions. This study tested a methodthat consists of planting beech seedlings in full-light conditionswith silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) or Scots pine (Pinussylvestris L.) as nurse trees. A total of 65 two-year-old beechseedlings surrounded by either 3, 4, 5 or 6 pine or birch seedlingsor without competitors were planted in bare-soil open-fieldconditions in Central France. Tree growth and light availabilitywere monitored at the end of each of the following 3 years, and soil moisture was also measured the last year. At the endof the experiment, aerial biomass measurements were made onthe beeches. Results showed that relative beech growth in termsof diameter was significantly reduced by the local neighbouringtrees and that this reduction was particularly noticeable inthe pine treatments where there was extensive pine seedlingdevelopment. In contrast, relative beech height did not exhibitany significant variations among the treatments. Light availabilitywas decreased by the neighbouring trees, especially in the pinetreatments. Light reduction was more pronounced in the last2 years and in the middle or lower parts of the canopy of thesubject beech. Soil water content was lower under the pine canopiesthan under the birch canopies, and was positively correlatedto beech relative diameter growth. Specific leaf area, height-to-diameterratio and crown length-to-crown width ratio weakly but significantlyincreased with competition from the neighbours. Beech biomasspartitioning was only weakly affected by the treatments. Thisstudy showed that nurse trees tend to reduce beech growth butimprove form although effects remained weak due to the insufficientlength of the experiment. Further studies are also needed toquantify the effects of the neighbourhood on the growth of competitiveherbaceous vegetation and on changes in the microclimatic conditions.  相似文献

Scots pine sapwood (Pinus sylvestris L.) and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) were impregnated with five waxes. The experiments indicate deep penetration into pine sapwood. Besides the viscosity, an influence of the wax polarity is presumed. Wax penetrates pine wood deeply via the cross-section, but not sufficiently enough to impregnate longer construction elements. However, the radial wax uptake exceeds the uptake via the tangential orientation and guarantees complete soaking of the sapwood tissue. The lateral wax penetration within beech is quite low and irregular. In addition to the temperature, a prolonged process procedure is decisive for an increasing wax uptake. As such, beech wood vessel elements seem to be fully impregnable via the longitudinal surface after a longer process procedure.  相似文献

The impregnation process of Scots pine and beech samples with tannin solutions was investigated. The two materials involved in the process (impregnation solution and wood samples) are studied in depth. Viscosity of mimosa tannin solutions and the anatomical aspect of beech and Scots pine were analysed and correlated. The viscosity of tannin solutions presents a non-newtonian behaviour when its pH level increases, and in the case of addition of hexamine as a hardener, the crosslinking of the flavonoids turns out to be of great importance. During the impregnation of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), the liquid and solid uptakes were monitored while taking into consideration the different conditions of the impregnation process. This method allowed to identify the best conditions needed in order to get a successful preservative uptake for each wooden substrate. The penetration mechanism within the wood of both species was revealed with the aid of a microscopic analysis. Scots pine is impregnated through the tracheids in the longitudinal direction and through parenchyma rays in the radial direction, whereas in beech, the penetration occurs almost completely through longitudinal vessels.  相似文献

Different multiple linear regression models of maximum leaf area index (LAImax) based on stand characteristics, site quality, meteorological variables and their combinations were constructed and cross-validated for three economically important tree species in Flanders, Belgium: European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). The models were successfully tested on similar datasets of experimental sites across Europe. For each species, ten homogeneous and mature stands were selected, covering the species’ entire stand productivity range based on an a priori site index classification. LAImax was derived from measurements of leaf area index (LAI) made by means of hemispherical digital photography over the whole growing season (mid-April till end October 2008). Species-specific models of LAImax for beech and oak were mostly driven by management practice affecting stand characteristics and tree growth. Tree density and dominant height were main predictors for beech, while stand age and tree-ring growth were important in the oak models. Scots pine models were more affected by site quality and meteorological variables. The beech meteorological model showed very good agreement with LAI at several European sites. Scots pine’s stand model predicted well LAI across Europe. Since the species-specific models did not share common predictors, generic models of LAImax were developed for the 30 studied sites. Dominant height was found to be the best predictor in those generic models. As expected, they showed a lower predictive performance than species-specific ones.  相似文献

There is a need for selective foliar-acting herbicides for transplantlines in forestry nurseries and new forestry plantings. Toleranceof 2-year-old pot-grown trees of beech, birch, sycamore, ash, cherry, oak, red alder, Japanese larch and Sitka spruce to contactherbicides applied at different dates in the growing seasonwas investigated.Clopyralid was safe to use on all species apartfrom some fresh weight reduction in Japanese larch. Bentazoneand phenmedipham caused initial necrosis on most species tested;however, most trees outgrew the effect of phenmedipham in thefollowing season. Bentazone, generally, had a long-term inhibitoryeffect on growth of alder and at the highest dose tested (5.2kg ha–1 ) also affected ash and beech.Metsulfuron-methyland tribenuron-methyl were safe on most species tested. However, fresh weight reductions were caused by metsulfuron-methyl inash and cherry and by tribenuron-methyl in alder. Mecoprop damagedall species, apart from Sitka spruce.  相似文献

Abstract

A shortcoming of the laminated bending process is that the products may become distorted after moulding and during use. In this study, we have examined the influence of different UF-adhesive systems, adhesive distribution, and veneer properties such as species, moisture content, and fibre orientation. Two different species were studied: beech (Fagus silvatica L.) and birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh.). Distortion was determined directly after moulding and after storage in a changing relative humidity. The aim of the work was to study how the above-mentioned material and process parameters influence the distortion. The results show that the material and process parameters and the storage in a changing relative humidity had a clear impact on distortion. Fibre orientation, differences in moisture content between veneers, and the moisture gradient in the final product are identified in this study as being the most important parameters influencing the distortion and shape stability of laminated veneer products.  相似文献

Abstract

The effects of fencing and site preparation on performance of birch (Betula pendula Roth), oak (Quercus robur L.), pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] seedlings were studied over four growing seasons in southern Sweden. The experiment was composed of four browsing treatments, from which roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) were excluded for 0, 12, 24 or 42 months, and four soil treatments. Natural browsing was combined with artificial browsing (clipping). It was demonstrated that browsing by roe deer could be isolated from browsing by moose (Alces alces L.) by selective fencing. Except for birch, browsing had little effect on seedling survival. Browsing reduced height growth by more than 100% for oak and pine, and more than 60% of pine seedling developed multiple stems. Except for oak, site preparation increased seedling survival. Inverting site preparation, in combination with or without fertilization, produced positive growth responses in seedlings, whereas patch scarification did not. There was no interaction between browsing and soil treatments on seedling performance. It was concluded that long-term protection against browsing by roe deer is needed for oak and pine, whereas short-term fences might be used for birch, and that spruce is relatively unaffected by browsing.  相似文献

Roughness models for sanded wood surfaces   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
The understanding of the effects of variables is crucial to achieve the desired sanded surface quality at optimum condition. In wood surface evaluation, it is known that anatomies on wood surface could distort the roughness value and cause a misinterpretation of the processing performance. In this study, statistical approaches were taken to characterize the influence of sanding variables as well as to analyze the anatomical noises that were inherited from intra- and inter-species of woods. Four available roughness parameters (R a , R q , R k and R ap) were used to examine the surface of three distinct wood species, viz. kembang semangkok, red oak and spruce in wide-belt sanding. Based on the mean values, analysis of variance showed that species (anatomy) was significant to all conventional parameters except R ap which was filtered by monitoring the second derivative of Abbott-curve. In spite of this, R ap recorded a more widely dispersed deviation of random measurement values than R k and R a . The effects of grit size and feed rate were found to be significant. Empirical roughness models were established using response surface methodology, and the errors were calculated by comparing the model values to all the randomly measured values. Although exhibiting slight species-dependant effect by nature, R k showed reliable consistency by recording the lowest error values (<10%) for both intra- and inter-species measurements. Experimental results also suggested that three random measurements at each run could be sufficient. The method of constructing machinability models can be readily applied in the industry as a quality control tool for wide-belt sander.  相似文献

Wettability of medium density fiberboard (MDF) surface affects paint or adhesive application and is, thus, of importance in the course of furniture manufacturing. This study investigated the effects of wood species, digester conditions and defibrator disc distance on the wettability properties. It was found that the wettability of the MDF significantly decreased with increasing the defibrator disc distance and increased with the increment in the severity of the digestion conditions. The highest wettability was found for samples made of beech wood having an average contact angle value of 74.5°, followed by poplar wood (76.5°), birch wood (79.7°), the mixture (1:1) of scots pine and beech wood (82.9°), and scots pine wood (86.4°), respectively.  相似文献
