This study, which is part of the 1985 Assessment on Current Damages of Acid Deposition, examines uncertainty due to treating transport processes using a single-layer model compared to a multilayer model. The Multilayer Regional Air Pollutant Transport Model, MLRAPT, was run in both modes, single layer and multilayer, using 224 sources during a 22-day period in July 1978 for the northeastern United States. Comparison between the two modes indicated that the average air concentrations were highly correlated (a correlation coefficient of 0.98). However, for wet deposition of SO4, a correlation coefficient of 0.55 between the two predicted wet deposition fields was obtained. Results of the comparison of the two modes with the observed air concentration fields and with a limited comparison of observed wet deposition indicate that caution should be used when interpreting results of a single-layer model to develop source/receptor relationships.  相似文献

Estimating the atmospheric input of ions to a watershed has traditionally been accomplished through either the extrapolation of point measurements of deposition or the integration of model estimated deposition. This paper examines the characteristics of precipitation chemistry on the eastern seaboard of the United States where precipitation quality could conceivably affect fish habitats in estuaries. The measured values presented here have been extracted from the data base of the Utility Acid Precipitation Sampling Program (UAPSP) precipitation chemistry network. These data illustrate the nature of ionic deposition at four points on the eastern seabord. The deposition of H' (acidity) is shown to be dependent upon the amount of sulfate and, to a lesser degree, nitrate in the precipitation. It is also shown that the quantity of ionic deposition on a storm-by-storm basis was influenced by the amount of water deposition but the relationship was not very strong. Thus the use of water deposition as a surrogate for ionic deposition is not justified in these watersheds. Finally, it is shown that the deposition of H+, SO4 2?, NO3 ?, and NH4 + were not clearly seasonal. While a large percentage of total ionic deposition occurred in a small number of precipitation events, these exceptional events were not confined to a particular season.  相似文献

The joint research project, ‘Acid Precipitation — Effects on Forest and Fish‘ (the SNSF-project) of the Agricultural Research Council of Norway and the Norwegian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research was started in 1972. The objectives of the project are to: (1) establish as precisely as possible the effects of acid precipitation on forest and freshwater fish; and (2) investigate the effects of air pollutants on soil, vegetation, and water, required to satisfy point 1. Research activities on the project are organized and carried out mainly at four institutes. Within and between these institutes groups are formed carrying out investigations in fields including atmospheric transport and chemistry, dry deposition and leaching of foliage, forest growth, soil biology and soil chemistry, hydrological relationships of peatland, hydrobiology with special stress on fish, and hydrochemistry including snow chemistry.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effect of extreme HCl deposition on soil acid neutralization following simulated shuttle rocket launches. Four soils along a soil chronosequence from Vandenberg Air Force Base were selected and evaluated as a function of pH spike addition (pH=1.0, 2.5, 4.0, and 5.6) and time (0 to 4 mo) in a leaching-incubation experiment. The pH=1.0 treatment led to a rapid soil extract pH decrease to 2.5 in poorly buffered soils and increased leaching of basic cations (Ca, Mg, K, and Na), Al, and Si. In general, there were no significant differences among the pH= 2.5, 4.0, and 5.6 treatments. Acid neutralization capacity increased with increasing soil age. The acid neutralization process involved two steps. In Step 1, acid is neutralized by direct or indirect exchange with exchangeable basic cations. The most likely mechanisms for this step are: (1) the direct exchange of H′ for basic cations followed by an interchange reaction between surface H′ and structural Al, and (2) the indirect exchange through H+ neutralization by polyhydroxyl-Al complexes with concurrent base displacement. Acid neutralization by a gibbsite-like mineral is an unlikely mechanism controlling the initial acid neutralization step. Eventually a pure acidic (H-A l) complex develops. A theoretical model describing the general interaction between atmospheric trace gases, such as S02, NH3, C02 and 02, chemical reactant gaseous product H2SO4 and hydrometeors containing NaCl is proposed to study a possible mechanism for HCl production in non-precipitating cloud and the determination of the pH value of cloud droplets. Four different cloud droplet distributions have been used to estimate the upper limit of the amount of gaseous HCl released into the atmosphere resulting from the evaporation of cloud droplets. It is shown that the acid production and the amount of HCl released depend on the following factors: (a) the temperature of the cloud; (b) the oxidation rates; (c) the ambient concentration of SO2, NH3, and H2SO4; (d) the life cycle of the cloud; and (e) the liquid content of the cloud. This proposed chemical model also predicts a pH value spectrum depending on the cloud droplet distribution. Field measurements for the dependence of pH value on particle size and spatial distribution of gaseous HCl are recommended.  相似文献

Nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) were compared for their ability to solubilize Pb from a highly-contaminated (PbT 21%) soil collected from a battery recycling facility. For chelant concentrations below 0.04 M (representing a 1:1 chelant-to-PbT molar ratio), EDTA released 10 to 30% more Pb than NTA. NTA-to-Pb T ratios greater than 1:1 reduced Pb recovery because of readsorption of Pb(NTA)2 4? onto positively-charged oxide soil components at pH < 8.5. For the EDTA system, however, complexation completely bound all coordination sites of Pb and EDTA, leaving no functional groups available for surface adsorption. Thus, Pb recovery progressively increased with higher EDTA concentrations, although the additional Pb release with each EDTA increment became smaller. For pH < 5 and EDTA/Pb of 2:1, Pb recovery exceeded 90%. The addition of 0.5 M NaC1O4 enhanced Pb recovery by EDTA for pH 5 to 12, but substantially suppressed recovery by NTA for pH < 11. Because Pb release by NTA was diminished by high ionic strength and chelant-to-metal ratios, NTA may be limited as a soil washing reagent. Stronger complexation and consistent Pb desorption behavior by EDTA favors its use.  相似文献

Air pollution and atmospheric deposition by PCBs and organochlorine pesticides (isomers of HCH and p,p′-DDE) were studied at Paris from January 1986 to June 1987. The deposition measured as total (wet plus dry) was also followed during 1986 on two suburban and two rural sites. The distribution of the pollutants between the vapor phase and aerosols was evaluated by sampling air through a glass microfiber filter connected to a Tenax resin cartridge. The study shows that in the atmosphere as in waters of the catchment area of the Seine river, PCBs are the main organochlorine pollutants. Pollution by OCL is of the same order as the one described in literature (mean γ-HCH concentration 1.4 ng m?3) while PCB concentrations in the atmosphere are equal to or higher than those observed in USA and Europe (range 5 to 44 ng m?3). On the average, 93% of the PCBs are in the vapor phase with a composition approximating Aroclor 1242. In aerosols and precipitations the composition is closely related to Aroclor 1254. The total fallout for 1986 was 40 μg m?2 for PCBs and 20 μg m?2 for γ-HCH, rainfall being 611 mm.  相似文献

Nitrogen deposition calculations for Europe were performed by separate models describing the long-range transport of ammonia and oxidized N. A linearized version of a non-linear atmospheric chemistry model was used for calculating oxidized N. Model computations were found to be consistent with the observed spatial pattern of wet nitrate deposition in Europe. Interannual meteorological variability was estimated to cause a typical year-to-year variation in annual oxidized N deposition of about 6 to 10%. Nitrogen deposition was computed for several NO x emissions reduction scenarios. These scenarios were derived from an OECD study and applied to the 27 largest countries in Europe. Most reduction scenarios affected the deposition pattern of oxidized N, but the most extreme NO x emission reduction scenario did not change very much the overall pattern of total (oxidized N plus ammonia N) N deposition. Depending on the desired level of environmental protection, it may be necessary to reduce ammonia emissions in addition to NO x emissions in order to reduce N deposition in Europe.  相似文献

Sediment cores were taken from the remote Sagamore and Woods Lakes in New York State's Adirondack acid lake region and analyzed for 3 to 7 ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Ag, Al, As, Be, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Ph, Se, Sn, TI, V, and Zn. With the exception of perylene, all of the parental PAHs, e.g. those without sidechains, and several of the metals, Pb, As, and Cd, were found to be significantly increased in the sediments of both lakes compared to their natural integrated deposits (ng cm?2) and their background concentrations (μg g?1 or ng g?1 dry wt). Although the concentrations were generally much higher in Woods Lake, the total anthropogenic integrated depositions were about the same in both lakes for most of the metals and the 3 to 4 ring PAHs. The prime source of most of the 3 to 7 ring PAHs and trace elements measured is ascribed to anthropogenic combustion. Anthropogenically derived materials decreased in concentration with depth to baseline levels in sediment layers estimated by137Cs analyses to be ~30 yr old, while biogenic or crustal derived species remained constant or fluctuated with core depth.  相似文献

In Quebec, in 1984 and 1985, a number of American Black Duck (Anas rubripes) and Common Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) ducklings were reared on two acid lakes (pH 4.8 to 5.0) and one circumneutral lake (pH 6.0) in which the brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) populations had been manipulated. This allowed us to determine how acidity and competition with fish affected duckling feeding and growth. Strong acidity and the presence of fish were both required before the birds' development was restricted, the Black Duck being particularly affected. This result supports hypotheses on competition between fish and some waterfowl species.  相似文献

The spatial patterns of the precipitation-weighted mean concentration and total deposition of sulfate and nitrate in Ontario from 1981 to 1983 were determined using the Modified Simple Kriging method. The 3-yr averaged spatial patterns of sulfate and nitrate concentrations were similar to the sulfate and nitrate 3-yr averaged deposition patterns in Ontario. The overall spatial variability of nitrate was slightly higher than sulfate. The seasonal variation of nitrate concentrations and deposition were less regular than sulfate.  相似文献

Purpose

A multi-compartment monitoring study was performed to characterize the effect of environmental variables, such as temperature and water flow as well as sediment characteristics, on the distribution and transport of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in a dynamic river system during 1 year in an industrial region in central Europe.

Materials and methods

Waterborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were assessed over a period of 1 year at five sampling sites in the Morava River in the Czech Republic. Contaminants were measured monthly in riverbed sediments, freshly deposited sediments, water samples and passive samplers.

Results and discussion

Sediments are the main carrier of POPs in the river. Distinguishable patterns of PAHs, OCPs and PCBs in sediment indicate that their origin is from distinct sources and different transport pathways. The PAHs were identified as the dominant contaminant group of compounds with a mean concentration in sediment of 5,900 μg kg?1. Such concentrations are up to 10 times higher than in the Danube River, into which Morava drains. In contrast, mean concentrations of PCBs, hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and its breakdown products (DDTs) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) of 6.0, 0.4, 4.2 and 6.0 μg kg1, respectively, are similar to those in the Danube. With some exceptions, no significant difference in composition of surficial riverbed sediments and those collected using sediment traps was observed. Despite the presence of potential local pollutant sources, the differences in contaminant concentrations between sites in the region were in most cases not significant. Variations in POP concentrations in sediments are mainly induced by high flow events, whereas seasonal variability was not observed.

Conclusions

The changes in contaminant concentrations in Morava River sediments are induced by episodic high flow events that cause erosion of contaminant-containing particles and their deposition at suitable downstream sites.  相似文献

The influence of NTA, EDTA, STPP, Triton X100, PO inf4 sup3 and NO inf3 sup? on the mobilization of Pb, Cd, Cu, Cr and Mn from sediments of two rivers located in Northern Greece was studied. The release caused by all examined complexing agents was higher in deionized water than either Axios or Aliakmon river water due to the lack of competition of Ca and Mg cations with the heavy metals for the studied complexing agents, and the decrease of ionic strength. From all examined agents NTA and EDTA showed the greater mobilization ability. Copper showed the greater tendency for remobilization by all examined agents, (according to the order: EDTA?NTA, Triton X1004 PO inf4 sup3? > NO inf3 sup3? ?STPP) while Cr and Mn the smallest following the orders: NTA, PO inf4 sup3? >> NO inf3 sup? , Triton X1004 EDTA, STPP and STPP > EDTA > NTA > Triton X 100 ? PO inf4 sup3? NO3, respectively. An increase in mobilization was noticed with an increase of agent concentration and time of shaking.  相似文献

Comparisons of stream water chemistry over a 2 yr period in East Fork, which drains an entirely forested watershed, and Big Run, which drains a forested watershed 8 % of which is occupied by Big Run Bog, indicated that Big Run Bog had no effect on stream water H+ or Cl? concentrations, but with increasing stream discharge the wetland was a source of Ca++ Mg++, K+, Na+, NO3 ?, and SO4 ?, and a sink for Fe+ +. Further comparisons with Tub Run, which drains a forested watershed, 13 and 12% of which is occupied by Tub Run Bog and an abandoned, unreclaimed coal surface mine, respectively, suggested that Tub Run Bog removes H+, Ca ++, Mg++, Fe++, and 504 ? from inputs of acid mine drainage. Wetland areas on the landscape contribute to the regulation of stream water chemistry in ways that are different from upland areas, and wetlands may have considerable applied potential for minimizing the impact of the mine drainage on stream water quality.  相似文献

Kaolinite was equilibrated with Cd and with varying amounts of the individual compounds: EDTA, NTA, alginic acid, and humic acid. In experiments in which the Cd and kaolinite concentrations were held constant, and the ligand concentration allowed to vary, conditions under which ligand enhanced and inhibited Cd association with the solid phase were noted. Further experiments at constant Cd: ligand confirmed that, for alginic acid and humic acid, enhancement of uptake occurred, while EDTA diminished uptake. These results were compared with the adsorption of ligand by clay in the absence of organic, and it is suggested that the enhancement of uptake is due to the formation of an adsorbed organic layer on the clay serving as a solid phase ligand.  相似文献

The biology and chemistry of three northeastern Pennsylvania lakes was studied from summer 1981 through summer 1983 to evaluate lakes with different sensitivities to acidification. At the acidified lake (total alkalinity ≤ 0.0 μeq L?1) there were fewer phytoplankton and zooplankton species than at the moderately sensitive lakes. The most numerous plankton species in all three lakes are reportedly acid tolerant. Among the benthic macro- invertebrates (BMI) there were more acid tolerant Chironomidae at the acidified lake, but more acid intolerant Ephemeroptera and Mollusca and a higher wet weight at the least sensitive lake. There were no differences among the lakes' BMI mean total numbers or mean number of taxa. The fish community at the acidified lake was dominated by stunted Lepomis gibbosus, but L. machrochirous were most abundant in the other lakes. Principal component analysis suggested a shift in all three lakes over the sampling period toward combined lower pH, alkalinity, specific conductance, Ca and Mg and higher Al and Mn. Such chemical changes have been associated with acidification. The rate and extent of acidification appeared to be controlled by geological and hydrological characteristics of the drainage basins.  相似文献

Atmospheric sources contributed significantly to the annual flux of trace metals and sulfate to the forest floor of Walker Branch Watershed, a forested catchment in the southeastern United States. Atmospheric deposition supplied from 14% (Mn) to≈40% (Zn, Cd, So 4 = ) to 99% (Pb) of the annual flux to the forest floor; the remainder was attributable to internal element cycling. The measured water solubility of these metals in suspended and deposited particles indicates that they may be readily mobilized following deposition. Dry deposition constituted a major fraction of the total annual atmospheric input of Cd and Zn (≈20%), SO=(≈35%), Pb(≈55%), and Mn (≈90%); however, wet deposition rates for single events exceeded dry deposition rates by one to four orders of magnitude. Interception of rain by the canopy resulted in loss of Cd, Mn, Pb, Zn, and SO= from the canopy, but uptake of H+ which increased with increasing free acidity of the incoming rain, and with increasing residence time of the rain on the leaf surface.  相似文献

Average annual growth of 3,001 red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) trees on plots randomly located across northern New England and upstate New York shows a regionally consistent decline starting soon after 1960. Depending on location, basal-area increment in 1980 was 13 to 40% less than in the peak growth year around 1960. The growth decline occurs in all size and age classes and is independent of elevation. Balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) also shows a growth decline, but the start varies by tree age. The growth decline in both species is explainable at least in part by natural growth processes, complicating the task of evaluating the effects of atmospheric deposition.  相似文献

We examined the effect of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) on the growth of maize and soybean plants and associated soil microbial communities. Plants were grown in a greenhouse, and low levels of undoped or nitrogen-doped TiO2 NPs were applied. Plant growth and nutrient content were determined, and effects of NPs on composition of soil microbial communities were examined using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis (TRFLP) of rDNA. We found no significant effects of TiO2 NPs on plant growth, nutrient content, or the composition of bacterial communities within the rhizosphere. However, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities were affected by application of undoped and nitrogen-doped TiO2 NPs. This observation may be partially attributed to the small but significant TiO2 NP uptake levels in the root tissues of both plants. Our results suggest that even low concentrations of TiO2 NPs may influence some important groups of soil microbes, such as mycorrhizal fungi, but changes in the composition of microbial communities may not affect plant growth under conditions of adequate moisture and nutrients.  相似文献
