CASE HISTORY: An 8-month-old Labrador Retriever was referred with a history of ambiguous external genitalia. CLINICAL FINDINGS AND TREATMENT: Clitoromegaly within apparent vulval folds, and an adjacent subcutaneous mass were noticed on external examination. An intra-abdominal testicle, with epididymis and suspected vas deferens ducts, was found during exploratory celiotomy. Incision over the subcutaneous mass revealed the accompanying testicle. Clitoridectomy was performed and an os clitoris removed. Normal juvenile testes were diagnosed on histology of the gonads. Chromosomal studies revealed a normal 78, XY male chromosomal constitution. Due to the combination of a male karyotype (78, XY), the presence of testicular tissue in the gonads, and the appearance of the external genitalia, a diagnosis of male pseudohermaphroditism (MPH) was made. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This case presents the first report of MPH in a Labrador Retriever, and highlights the diagnostic steps recommended when confronted with a dog with ambiguous external genitalia.  相似文献

A 1‐year‐old Shih Tzu dog was presented for examination because of abnormal external genitalia. A residual penis with a prepuce was located in a position typical of a male. The dog had no palpable testicles or scrotum. The ultrasound examination revealed the presence of the prostate, but the gonads remained undetectable. Cytogenetic analysis performed on chromosome preparations obtained from lymphocyte culture showed two cell lines – 78,XX and 78,XY. Molecular analysis of 14 polymorphic microsatellite markers allowed us to distinguish leucocyte chimerism from whole body chimerism. The presence of 3 or 4 alleles was confirmed in DNA isolated from blood, while in DNA isolated from hair follicles only 1 or 2 alleles were detected. The case was classified as leucocyte 78,XX/78,XY chimerism. Our study showed that XX/XY leucocyte chimerism might be associated with disorder of sexual development in dogs. Furthermore, it is emphasized that the use of cytogenetic study, in combination with analysis of polymorphic markers in DNA isolated from different somatic cells, facilitates distinguishing between leucocyte and whole body chimerism.  相似文献

Abstract

CASE HISTORY: In 2008, a 3-year-old female Labrador Retriever was presented for routine breeding soundness evaluation.

CLINICAL FINDINGS: Vaginal endoscopy revealed an 8-cm long and 1-cm thick vaginal septum. Surgical resection of the septum was performed under general anaesthesia using a bipolar high-frequency resectoscope. Three months later the bitch was naturally mated and subsequently delivered five male and two female puppies without complications. Both female puppies were examined at the age of 12 and 15 months and showed a vaginal septum with a diameter of 0.3 and 0.5 cm, respectively.

DIAGNOSIS: Vaginal septa in three related bitches.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This is the first report describing the use of a bipolar high-frequency resectoscope for vaginal surgery in dogs. The septum could be resected quickly, with preservation of surrounding structures. Furthermore, it is the first report collecting information about familial presentation of vaginal septa in female dogs. Based on this case, we suggest that consideration should be given to the possible risk of inheritance of vaginal septa before considering surgical resection and breeding of female dogs.  相似文献

Surgical removal of a localised vascular hepatic hamartoma in a dog   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
A 2-year-old male Labrador Retriever was presented for sudden abdominal distension. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed abundant abdominal fluid and a hepatic mass, which was removed by total lobectomy. Histologic evaluation of the mass supported a vascular hepatic hamartoma. Vascular hamartomas are rare malformations in animals and only two cases have been reported in the dog. This is the first recorded case of a canine vascular hepatic hamartoma treated surgically and having a successful long-term outcome.  相似文献

A seven-month-old male pedigree cat was brought to the Norwegian College of Veterinary Medicine for routine castration. Visual examination of the external genitalia revealed a wide genital cleft with non-fused bilaterally located testicular pouches. A large clitoris, which was penis-like with small penile spines, was seen protruding dorsally from the ventral commissure of the genital cleft. During an exploratory coeliotomy, no intra-abdominal genital structures of müllerian origin were found. The skin pouches on either side of the vulvar cleft were incised and grossly normal testicles were removed. Histology of the removed gonads showed no or very sparse spermatogenesis. The chromosomal sex was determined by karyotyping to be a normal male 38XY. Based on these findings, the diagnosis of male pseudohermaphroditism was made. The aetlology of the condition in this cat was not determined.  相似文献

CASE HISTORY: A 5-year-old neutered male Cornish Rex cat was presented for evaluation with a history of vomiting over the previous 5 days.

CLINICAL FINDINGS: An abdominal mass was palpated, which was shown to be cystic by ultrasound examination. Exploratory surgery revealed this to be associated with the pancreas and it was duly resected. Histopathology was performed on the cystic mass.

DIAGNOSIS: Pancreatic cyst with associated chronic active infl ammation.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This is the first report of a true pancreatic cyst in a cat.  相似文献

An 8-year-old, intact, male Labrador Retriever was presented to the Boren Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at Oklahoma State University with a 2-month history of severe sneezing episodes that resulted in epistaxis and bilateral sanguineous discharge. Rhinoscopy revealed a small polypoid mass, and specimens were obtained for histopathology. Microscopic examination of formalin-fixed tissue specimens revealed organisms consistent with Rhinosporidium seeberi. The mass was surgically excised and impression smears were made for cytology examination. Smears revealed high numbers of endospores, typical of those previously described for R seeberi. In addition, numerous smaller structures, presumed to be immature endospores, were noted. The immature endospores were morphologically distinct from mature endospores and have not been described previously. Recognition of immature forms of Rhinosporidium may help prevent misidentification of the organism or misdiagnosis of a dual infection.  相似文献

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 3-year-old spayed female Labrador Retriever was evaluated for progressive lameness of the left forelimb 21 months after being shot in the elbow with a lead bullet. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Physical examination findings were consistent with moderate osteoarthritis of the left elbow joint. Orthogonal radiographic views of the elbow revealed multiple metallic fragments in and around the joint space as well as signs of osteoarthritis. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: The elbow joint was evaluated arthroscopically. A lead-based bullet fragment was seen in the lateral synovial compartment and removed in multiple pieces. Excess fibrin and synovium were removed, and microfractures were created in exposed subchondral bone to stimulate neovascularization and fibrocartilage formation. In a follow-up telephone conversation 4 months after surgery, the owner reported a marked improvement in the lameness. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Removal of lead intra-articular foreign bodies may be indicated even if the material is not believed to mechanically interfere with joint motion.  相似文献

This report describes the surgical anatomy and successful removal of the internal gonads in a 6-year-old male pseudohermaphrodite Friesian horse by standing laparoscopy. Gonads could not be identified by physical or ultrasonographic examination and bilateral standing flank laparoscopy revealed the presence of intra-abdominal gonads suspended from the dorsal aspect of the abdominal cavity by 10–15 cm long vascular pedicles. No evidence of female internal genitalia such as a uterus was found and bilateral gonadectomy was performed laparoscopically. Histological analysis of the excised gonads confirmed the diagnosis of male pseudohermaphroditism. Minor cosmetic surgery of the external genitalia to correct urinary misdirection was successfully performed 3 months after laparoscopic castration. Standing flank laparoscopic examination was excellent for identification and surgical removal of internal genitalia. Standing flank laparoscopy should be considered for inspection and removal of internal genitalia in intersex horses.  相似文献

CASE HISTORY: A 6-year-old, entire male Flat-coated Retriever was presented with a history of lethargy, polydipsia and seizures. Clinical chemistry had shown marked azotaemia.

CLINICAL FINDINGS AND DIAGNOSIS: Radiography and ultrasonography revealed bilateral renomegaly, and cytology of fine needle aspirates from the kidneys was diagnostic of malignant lymphoma. The dog was treated with a modified high-dose cyclophosphamide-, vincristine-, and prednisolone-based chemotherapy protocol, achieved remission, and returned to normal quality of life. Survival time was 346 days from the time of diagnosis.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Malignant lymphoma in the kidneys of dogs has been considered to carry a uniformly poor prognosis. Long-term remission after medical treatment has not previously been reported. The favourable outcome in this case illustrates the limitations of clinical staging in determining the outcome for individual patients.  相似文献

A 9-year-old male neutered Labrador Retriever presented with signs consistent with multifocal neurological disease. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed a mononuclear pleocytosis and electromyography revealed abnormal electrical activity in distal appendicular and masticatory muscles. Treatment was declined and necropsy revealed disseminated granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis with extensive involvement of the peripheral nervous system.  相似文献

An 8‐year‐old Labrador Retriever was presented for inspiratory efforts with stertor. A rhinoscopy and a magnetic resonance imaging scan were performed and revealed a naso‐pharyngeal mass. The mass was identified in the nasopharynx without meningeal extension. This mass was both T1‐ and T2‐hyperintense, compared to normal brain parenchyma without significant postcontrast enhancement. The mass was surgically removed and the histologic diagnosis was a mesenchymal tumor. Immunohistochemistry with antibodies was conducted and consistent with an extracranial meningioma. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first case report documenting a primary extracranial nasopharyngeal meningioma in a dog.  相似文献

CASE HISTORY A 3-year-old male Labrador retriever was presented with a history of dietary indiscretion followed by vomiting and abdominal pain.

CLINICAL FINDINGS AND TREATMENT: Abdominal ultrasonography revealed the presence of a fluid-filled cystic structure in the region of the pancreas. Flocculent, dark fluid was drained from the cystic structure during exploratory celiotomy prior to resection of the lateral cystic wall. Omentum was sutured into the cystic cavity to provide drainage and enhance immune response. A jejunostomy feeding tube was placed. Post-surgical care consisted of antibiotic therapy. The dog was clinically normal at 1 and 7 months post-operatively and the pancreas appeared normal on final ultrasonographic examination.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This case describes the use of omentum to provide physiological drainage of a pancreatic pseudocyst. This surgical technique may help clinicians manage patients with this condition in the future.  相似文献

Azoospermia is described in two sibling Labrador Retriever dogs. Clinical investigations following failure to sire pups after normal matings revealed testicular hypoplasia and degeneration. Sperm were absent on repeated ejaculate examination in both dogs. Histopathological examination of testicular needle aspirate biopsy and whole testicle of the first dog displayed an absence of spermatids and spermatocytes. Seminiferous tubules containing Sertoli cells with or without primary spermatogonia were present in the second dog. Peritubular lymphocyte accumulation was also present in both dogs. The dogs had been conceived using frozen-thawed semen.  相似文献

A 10-year-old, castrated, male Labrador Retriever was presented to a local veterinary practice for investigation of a firm, deeply pigmented, alopecic, subcutaneous mass (8 mm in diameter) on the left side of the muzzle. A fine-needle aspirate of the mass was submitted for cytologic evaluation to the University of Florida. Microscopically, the preparation contained a predominant population of histiocytes that contained variable numbers of intracytoplasmic, negative-staining, filamentous structures consistent with Mycobacterium sp. A presumptive diagnosis of canine leproid granuloma syndrome was based on the cytologic findings and location of the lesion. Acid-fast staining revealed bright pink, acid-fast organisms within the histiocytic cells, supporting the diagnosis. The bacteria were not detected in histopathologic sections or by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test 1 week later, however, possibly because of spontaneous remission. Canine leproid granuloma syndrome is a common disease in Australia, but is uncommon in dogs in North America. It is caused by a novel, unnamed Mycobacterium species and usually affects the skin and subcutaneous tissues of the head and ears. A diagnosis usually can be made in Wright's-Giemsa and acid-fast-stained cytologic specimens; however, definitive diagnosis requires PCR testing at a specialized laboratory.  相似文献

An infertile Siamese female cat was subjected for clinical, histological, cytogenetic and molecular studies due to ambiguous external genitalia (vulva, vagina, rudimentary penis and scrotum‐like structure) and masculine behaviour. An elevated oestrogen activity and a detectable level of testosterone were found. The cat underwent laparotomy. The gonads and the uterus were removed and subjected for histological studies, which showed ovaries with corpora lutea and a some primordial follicles. Chromosome studies of lymphocyte and fibroblast cultures, with the use of Giemsa staining, G‐banding and whole X chromosome painting by fluorescence in situ hybridization, revealed pure X monosomy. Molecular analysis showed the absence of the SRY gene. Our study revealed for the first time that X monosomy in cats may be associated with virilization, in spite of the lack of the SRY gene.  相似文献

A 6-year-old, neutered male Labrador Retriever was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, and an echocardiogram revealed a large mass inside the pericardial sac associated with the left ventricle. At necropsy, the dog had marked ascites, mild hydrothorax, marked hydropericardium, and an 11.0 x 7.0 x 6.0 cm, tan and red, firm, well-demarcated mass attached to the left ventricular free wall. The mass was diagnosed as a fibrosarcoma based on the morphologic appearance and supportive immunohistochemical staining. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of a primary fibrosarcoma involving the left ventricular free wall myocardium, epicardium, and pericardium with a pulmonary metastasis in a dog.  相似文献

Two phenotypically female Warmblood horses were presented at the Clinic for Horses owing to stallion-like behavior. One mare had an enlarged clitoris, whereas the other one showed no signs of ambiguous external genitalia. In both cases, intra-abdominal testicles were removed by laparoscopy. Hormone status, cytogenetic evaluation, and histopathological examination of the gonads were performed. One animal was diagnosed as having XX disorder of sexual development; the other one, as male pseudohermaphrodite.  相似文献

An 8-year-old Labrador Retriever with an 11-month history of progressive partial seizures and necropsy examination findings characteristic of the lamellar form of canine neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis (NCL) is presented. The clinical, light microscopic, and ultrastructural features of this case most closely resemble human adult-onset NCL (Kufs disease). This is the first report of NCL occurring in the Labrador Retriever breed.  相似文献
