Thirty barrows (average weight 8.4 kg) were used in a 3-wk experiment to determine the effects of the ingestion of vomitoxin (deoxynivalenol)-contaminated feed on performance and blood chemistry. The barrows were assigned randomly to consume either: 1) a control diet (C), fed ad libitum, 2) a vomitoxin contaminated diet (V; 10.5 ppm), fed ad libitum, or 3) a vomitoxin contaminated pair-fed at levels equal to those consumed by V animals (PF). The V and PF pigs had similar daily gains (.19 vs .20 kg) and feed intakes (.40 and .39 kg), but both of these were lower (P less than .01) than those for the C-fed pigs (.38 kg daily gain and .72 kg feed intake). The V-fed pigs had lower (P less than .05) hematocrit, hemoglobin, serum glucose and serum phosphorus and tended to have lower serum calcium (P less than .06) than C-fed pigs. The V-fed pigs had higher (P less than .05) hemoglobin and tended to have higher (P less than .08) serum phosphorus and lower (P less than .07) serum calcium than PF animals. There was a high total- and free-bilirubin concentration in serum of C- and V-fed pigs in the last sampling period (3-wk), which may be due to fasting and not cholestasis. No differences among treatments were observed in any of the other blood parameters. These results suggest that the differences in animal performance and blood parameters observed between control-and vomitoxin-fed pigs are mainly due to differences in feed intake.  相似文献

Forty-five pigs with an average initial live weight of 60 kg were used to investigate the effects of daily exogenous porcine pituitary growth hormone administration at two dose levels (pGH; 0, excipient buffer injected, and 100 micrograms.kg-1.d-1) for a 31-d period on the performance and body composition of boars, gilts and barrows allowed to consume feed ad libitum. Excipient boars consumed less feed, exhibited faster and more efficient growth (P less than .01) and produced less fat and more protein and water (P less than .01) in the empty body compared with excipient barrows, which in turn contained more fat and less water (P less than .05) in the empty body than did excipient gilts. These differences were largely eliminated by pGH administration, which induced differential effects in growth performance and body composition in boars, gilts and barrows. Growth hormone administration improved growth rate by 13, 22 and 16% and feed conversion efficiency by 19, 34 and 32% in boars, gilts and barrows, respectively. The reduction of body fat content (g/kg) elicited by pGH was 22, 36 and 33% for boars, gilts and barrows, respectively, with a corresponding increase (P less than .01) of body protein and water content. The magnitude of the pGH responses was greatest for gilts and barrows compared with boars, negating intrinsic sex-effect differences in growth performance and body composition of pigs. Pigs used in this study and treated with pGH exhibited a rate of protein deposition (approximately 225 g/d) far greater than previously reported, and as such redefine the genetic capacity for lean tissue growth by the pig.  相似文献

Twenty-five nongravid crossbred gilts (avg initial wt, 126 kg) were placed on either a high (38%) or a low (13%) crude protein (CP) diet and fed either at the rate of 1.82 kg/d or had ad libitum access to feed. In addition, a fifth group was pair-fed the 13% CP diet to the average intake of the gilts fed high CP ad libitum. The experimental period lasted 30 d. Corn-soybean meal diets were used and CP levels were varied by altering the corn:soybean meal ratio. Gain and gain/feed were reduced (P less than .01) in gilts fed 1.82 kg/d compared with the gilts fed ad libitum or pair-fed gilts. Gain (P less than .03) and feed intake (P less than .01) of gilts with ad libitum access to the 13% CP diet were higher than those of gilts with ad libitum access to the 38% CP diet. Gain/feed was not different (P greater than .10) between the two groups, however. Rate of gain and feed efficiency of gilts pair-fed the 13% CP diet were similar (P greater than .10) to those of gilts with ad libitum access to the 38% CP diet. Plasma total free amino acids, NH3 and total protein were not (P greater than .10) affected by treatment. Plasma urea-N and urinary total N, urea-N and orotic acid were increased (P less than .01) in gilts fed the high CP diet regardless of feed intake level. However, urinary NH3 was higher (P less than .01) in gilts fed the low-protein diet. These results indicate that excess dietary CP for nongravid gilts decreases gain and feed intake and has no effect on efficiency of feed utilization, but it increases plasma urea-N and urinary total N, urea-N and orotic acid.  相似文献

The effect of colostrum on endocrine and metabolic factors affecting glucose homeostasis was evaluated in 60 neonatal pigs that were fasted, fed (nursed ad libitum) or limit-fed colostrum (25% ad libitum, 4-hr interval feeding). Plasma acquired at birth (t0), and after 10, 20 and 30 hr (t10, t20 and t30, respectively) was analyzed for glucose, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), and the glucoregulatory hormones--insulin, glucagon, cortisol, growth hormone and catecholamines. The concentration of glucose and NEFA was similar among treatment groups at birth and increased in proportion to the quantity of colostrum consumed. Pigs fed ad libitum achieved and maintained a higher (greater than or equal to 40%; P less than .01) glucose concentration when compared to fasted neonates. Limit-fed counterparts also achieved and maintained higher levels, with glucose concentration being approximately 20% higher throughout (P less than .05). Fed pigs maintained NEFA concentrations which were approximately 2.5-fold to 4-fold greater than that of fasted pigs (P less than .05). Likewise, limit-fed pigs tended (P = .19) to have elevated NEFA concentrations and a lower (P less than .05) insulin:glucagon molar ratio. An inverse relationship was observed between colostrum intake and plasma concentrations of cortisol and growth hormone. Concentrations of epinephrine and norepinephrine tended (P greater than .10) to be elevated in fed pigs, relative to those of fasted counterparts. Provision of even limited quantities of colostrum is therefore beneficial to the glucoregulatory response in newborn pigs.  相似文献

Forty-eight crossbred barrows and gilts weighing 84.5 +/- .33 kg were used during two 21-d trials to investigate the effects of a cold, diurnal temperature (CD; -5.0 to 8.0 degrees C) compared with a constant, thermoneutral temperature (TN; 20 degrees C) and the effects of sex (barrows vs gilts) on performance. A second objective was to determine shrinkage as a result of a 24-h fast immediately after the 21-d study of hogs commingled vs those not commingled for both environmental treatments (CD vs TN). Pigs housed in the CD chamber gained 27.2% more slowly (P less than .001; 75 vs 1.03 kg/d) than those in the TN environment and consumed 5.7% more feed (P less than .05; 3.88 vs 3.67 kg/d). The lower ADG and higher feed intake (FI) exhibited by the CD pigs resulted in poorer (P less than .05) feed efficiency (F/G; 5.33 vs 3.73, respectively). A temperature x sex interaction occurred for ADG but not for FI or F/G. Twenty-four-hour shrink for the CD pigs was 16.4% less than for the TN pigs (3.72 vs 4.45%, respectively); however, commingling did not affect shrinkage.  相似文献

Thirty two barrows were used in a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement to evaluate the effects of porcine somatotropin (pST) administration (USDA-pGH-B1; 0 and 100 micrograms.kg BW-1.d-1) and feed intake (FI; ad libitum [A], 1.64 [R1:80% of A] and 1.38 [R2:60% of A] kg/d) on longissimus (LM) muscle fiber characteristics of pigs growing from 25 to 55 kg live weight. The administration of pST resulted in an increase (P less than .05) in muscle fiber size (all three fiber types) and shear-force (17.1%). The percentage of muscle fiber types was not affected by pST treatment. Feeding of the diet at restricted levels (R1 and R2) resulted in smaller (P less than .05) beta R and alpha W fibers compared with feeding ad libitum. Pigs with ad libitum access to their diet had fewer alpha R fibers and more alpha W fibers in the LM compared with those fed at R1 and R2 levels. Restricted feed intake (R1 and R2) resulted in lower (P less than .05) shear-force values compared with ad libitum feeding. The present study indicates that pST administration of young barrows results in an increase in muscle hypertrophy. Restricted FI reduces both transformation from alpha R to alpha W fibers and muscle fiber hypertrophy.  相似文献

These studies were conducted to determine whether ghrelin, a 28-amino acid peptide produced mainly by the stomach, was involved in tryptophan-mediated appetite stimulation in swine. In experiment 1, 36 crossbred (Long WhitexLarge White) barrows were used in a 2x3 factorial design to determine the effects of food intake (ad libitum versus limit fed) and tryptophan level (0.12%, 0.19% and 0.26%) on growth performance as well as ghrelin expression, plasma insulin, ghrelin and leptin levels. Ad libitum fed pigs gained more weight, but had poorer feed conversion than limit fed pigs. Weight gain, food intake and feed conversion all improved with increased ingestion of dietary tryptophan. Ad libitum feeding increased plasma insulin. Plasma insulin was unaffected by the level of dietary tryptophan. However, plasma leptin was significantly lower in pigs fed 0.19% tryptophan compared to those fed 0.12% tryptophan. Plasma ghrelin levels and ghrelin mRNA level in gastric fundus and duodenun was significantly higher in pigs fed 0.19% and 0.26% tryptophan diet compared with pigs fed 0.12%. In the second experiment, 18 crossbred barrows were divided into three treatments involving oral infusion of saline, tryptophan (40mg/kg BW) or 5-hydroxytryptophan (40mg/kg BW). Plasma ghrelin levels at 20, 40 and 60min after infusion of tryptophan were higher than after saline and 5-hydroxytryptophan infusion, 5-hydroxytryptophan infusion induced lower food intake than saline infusion, and tryptophan infusion increased food intake 2, 8 and 24h after infusion. In conclusion, oral tryptophan ingestion increased ghrelin expression in gastric fundus and plasma ghrelin level.  相似文献

Effects of ractopamine on genetically obese and lean pigs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Twenty-eight genetically obese and 24 lean barrows (65.0 and 68.7 kg average BW, respectively) were allotted within genotype to a 16% CP corn-soybean meal basal diet or this basal diet + 20 ppm ractopamine (a phenethanolamine beta-adrenergic agonist) and allowed ad libitum access to feed for 48 d. Compared to lean pigs, obese pigs had lower ADG, gain to feed ratio, longissimus muscle area, predicted amount of muscle, and weights of trimmed loin and ham, ham lean, heart, spleen, kidney and gastrointestinal tract (P less than .05). Obese pigs also had shorter carcass but higher dressing percentage, backfat thickness, fat depth, fat area, untrimmed loin weight and fasting plasma urea N concentration (P less than .05). Dietary supplementation with 20 ppm ractopamine reduced daily feed intake and improved gain to feed ratio in both lean and obese pigs (P less than .05). Pigs fed ractopamine had shorter carcasses, less fat depth and fat area, smaller weights of stomach and colon plus rectum, but higher dressing percentages, longissimus muscle areas, weights of trimmed Boston butts, picnics and loins, ham lean and predicted amounts of muscle than pigs not fed ractopamine (P less than .05). Supplemental ractopamine had no effect on fasting plasma concentrations of urea N, nonesterified fatty acids, triglyceride or glucose (P greater than .05). No genotype x ractopamine interactions for the criteria described above were detected (P greater than .05). These results suggest that ractopamine will improve the efficiency of feed utilization and carcass leanness in swine with different propensities for body fat deposition.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of nonwaxy (amylose and amylopectin starch) or waxy (amylopectin starch) sorghum on growth, carcass traits, and glucose and insulin kinetics of pigs. In Exp. 1 (95-d), 60 crossbred barrows or gilts (initial and final BW of 24 and 104 kg) were allotted to three treatments with five replications of four pigs per replicate pen in a randomized complete block design. The dietary treatments for Exp. 1 were 1) corn-soybean meal (C-SBM) diet, 2) sorghum-SBM (red pericarp, non-waxy), and 3) sorghum-SBM (red pericarp, waxy). In Exp. 2, 28 crossbred barrows (initial and final BW of 24 and 64 kg) were allotted to two treatments with three replications of four or five pigs per replicate pen in a randomized complete block design. Growth data were collected for 49 d, and then 20 barrows were fitted with jugular catheters, and then a glucose tolerance test (500 mg glucose/kg BW), an insulin challenge test (0.1 IU of porcine insulin/kg BW), and a feeding challenge were conducted. The dietary treatments for Exp. 2 were 1) sorghum-SBM (white pericarp, nonwaxy) and 2) sorghum-SBM (white pericarp, waxy). In Exp. 1, ADG (P = 0.10) and ADFI (as-fed basis; P = 0.02) were increased (P = 0.10) and gain:feed was decreased (P = 0.04) in pigs fed the sorghum-SBM diets relative to those fed the C-SBM diet. These responses may have resulted from the lower energy content of sorghum relative to corn. Plasma NEFA concentration (collected after a 16-h fast on d 77) was decreased (P = 0.08) in pigs fed the waxy sorghum-SBM diet relative to those fed the nonwaxy sorghum-SBM diet. Kilograms of carcass fat was decreased (P = 0.07) in pigs fed the waxy sorghum-SBM diet relative to those fed the nonwaxy sorghum-SBM diet. In Exp. 2, there was no effect (P = 0.57 to 0.93) of sorghum starch type on growth performance by pigs. During the glucose tolerance and insulin challenge tests, there were no effects (P = 0.16 to 0.98) of diet on glucose or insulin kinetics. During the feeding challenge, glucose (P = 0.02) and plasma urea N (P = 0.06) area under the response curves from 0 to 90 min were decreased in pigs fed the waxy sorghum-SBM diet. Feeding waxy sorghum had minimal effects on growth and carcass traits relative to pigs fed corn or nonwaxy sorghum. Waxy sorghum vs. nonwaxy sorghum had no effect on glucose or insulin kinetics in pigs.  相似文献

One hundred fifty crossbred pigs (55 kg) were allotted by weight, sex and litter to a randomized complete-block design with five dietary treatments, six blocks per treatment and five pigs per pen with sex equalized across treatments. Corn-soybean meal-based diets (.65% lysine) with 0, .25 and .5 mg/kg cimaterol were fed, on an ad libitum basis, to pigs slaughtered at an average pen weight of 104 kg/pig. Drug withdrawal prior to slaughter was 1, 3 and 5 d for pigs fed cimaterol at .25 mg/kg and 1 d for those fed cimaterol at .5 mg/kg of diet. Dietary cimaterol level influenced (quadratic, P less than .01) average daily gain during the first 42 d on test; however, daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio were not affected (P greater than .1). Pigs fed .25 mg/kg cimaterol with a 1-d drug withdrawal had 6.8, 7.7 and 13.5% less 10th rib fat depth and 11.1, 6.1 and 13.3% less P2 fat depth than those subjected to either a 3- or 5-d drug withdrawal or those fed the 0 mg/kg cimaterol diet (control), respectively. Overall, pigs fed cimaterol had 7.9% larger longissimus muscle area and 2.6% more kilograms of muscle than pigs fed the control diet. Cimaterol fed at .5 mg/kg resulted in higher (P less than .05) Warner-Bratzler shear force values and altered the proportion of saturation in some long-chain fatty acids, although the total saturated:unsaturated fat ratio was not affected. Two experiments were conducted to determine the variation in response to space allocation between barrows and gilts and to examine an alternative allocation regimen for barrows and gilts. Experimental space allocations in both experiments were achieved by varying the number of pigs per pen in a fully slatted facility. In Exp. 1, barrows were given 0.58 and 0.65 m2/pig (nine and eight pigs per pen, respectively) and gilts were given 0.65 and 0.74 m2/pig (eight and seven pigs per pen, respectively). In addition, barrows at 0.58 m2/pig were fed diets formulated for barrows or diets formulated for gilts. Barrows grew 4.8% slower (P = 0.031) and ate 3.1% less feed daily (P = 0.062) at 0.58 vs. 0.65 m2/pig from 22 to 115 kg BW, with no difference in feed conversion, daily lean gain, carcass lean percent, or variation in weight within the pen at time of first pig removal to slaughter. There was no improvement in daily gain, feed intake, feed efficiency, lean gain, or carcass lean percent when gilts were given 0.74 vs. 0.65 m2/pig from 22 to 115 kg BW. There was no difference in performance between the population that consisted of barrows and gilts at 0.65 m2/pig vs. the population of barrows at 0.58 m2/pig and gilts at 0.74 m2/pig. There was no difference in performance by barrows at 0.58 m2/pig when fed either barrow or gilt diets, except for a slight increase (P = 0.078) in within-pen weight variation when the first pig was removed for slaughter for the barrows fed gilt diets. In Exp. 2, barrows and gilts were given 0.58 m2/pig or 0.74 m2/pig (18 vs. 14 pigs per pen) from weaning (mean age 17 d) to slaughter on d 168 postweaning. There were no interactions between space allocation and gender. Daily gain and feed intake were decreased by 2.8% (P = 0.037) and 2.9% (P = 0.084), respectively, with no effect on feed conversion or standardized fat-free lean daily gain for the 0.58 vs. the 0.74 m2/pig treatment, whereas total live weight gain per pen was increased 20.8% (P < 0.001). Results of Exp. 1 suggest that space allocation can be used to achieve similar growth rates between barrows and gilts, and results of Exp. 2 suggest that the response to space allocation is similar for barrows and gilts. The difference in magnitude of response to space allocation between experiments may be due in part to when the social group was formed, with a smaller difference in performance in Exp. 2 associated with a stable social group from weaning to slaughter.  相似文献

The dose-dependent effects of porcine somatotropin (pST) on growth performance and composition of carcass gain were investigated in 150 growing pigs. The experiment involved two genotypes (barrows from the Pig Improvement Company [PIC] and a University of Nebraska [NEB] gene pool line) and two sexes (PIC barrows and boars). At 30 kg, pigs were randomly assigned within each genotype and sex subclass to receive daily i.m. injections of 50, 100, 150, or 200 micrograms of pST/kg BW or an equivalent volume of an excipient. A diet (3.5 Mcal of DE/kg) supplemented with crystalline amino acids and containing 22.5% CP was available on an ad libitum basis until pigs were slaughtered at approximately 90 kg live weight. Excipient-treated PIC barrows exhibited faster and more efficient growth (P less than .001) and a higher capacity for carcass protein accretion (P less than .001) but similar rates of lipid deposition compared to excipient-treated NEB barrows. Within the PIC genotype, control boars grew at a rate similar to that of barrows, but they were more efficient (P less than .05) and deposited more carcass protein (P less than .05) and less lipid (P less than .001). Carcass protein accretion rate increased (P less than .001) up to approximately 150 micrograms of pST.kg BW-1.d-1, whereas lipid deposition decreased (P less than .001) with each incremental dose of pST. Although differences between PIC boars and barrows for all criteria were negated with increasing pST dose, they were maintained between the two genotypes. Polynomial regressions suggested that a slightly higher pST dose was required to optimize the feed:gain ratio compared with rate of gain and that the dose (micrograms per kilogram BW per day) was a function of the genotype and sex (feed:gain: 185, 170, and 155; rate of gain: 155, 155, and 125 for NEB barrows, PIC barrows, and PIC boars, respectively).  相似文献

A study with a total of 96 crossbred barrows and gilts fed ad libitum in a body weight range of 56-110 kg was carried out in order to investigate whether the optimum ratio of apparent ileal digestible lysine : energy (ME) depends on the energy density of the diet. Dietary treatments were ratios of 0.34, 0.42, 0.50 and 0.58 g digestible lysine/MJ ME either at an energy density of 13 or 14 MJ ME. Body weight gain as well as feed and ME conversion rate were improved when lysine : ME ratio increased from 0.34 to 0.50, whereby all parameters showed a significant ratio x sex interaction. Feed intake and feed conversion rate were higher at a dietary energy density of 13 MJ ME than at an energy density of 14 MJ ME but energy density did not influence daily growth rate, ME intake and ME conversion rate. Fat area above eye muscle and meat : fat ratio were lower and eye muscle area and lean percentage were higher at a ratio of 0.42 compared with a ratio of 0.34. Daily feed intake, body weight gain, feed conversion rate and parameters of fatness were higher in barrows than in gilts. Conversely, gilts had higher eye muscle area and lean percentage. Optimum ratio for body weight gain, feed and ME conversion rate calculated by exponential regression analysis were 0.42-0.43 in barrows. In gilts, feed and ME conversion rate were optimized at a ratio of 0.53 and 0.54. Because growth showed a linear response to increasing digestible lysine : ME ratios, optimum ratio for daily gain in gilts is considered to be at least 0.58.  相似文献

The effect of ractopamine, a beta-adrenergic agonist, on growth, nutrient utilization, and carcass composition was studied in pigs fed either 18% CP, 12% CP, or 18% CP restricted (RES = 67% of ad libitum) diets. The 18 and 12% CP diets provided 3.52 and 3.68 Mcal of DE/kg, respectively. All pigs were fed a low-protein (12% CP) diet during pretreatment growth from 15 to 60 kg. Ractopamine at 20 or 30 ppm (30 ppm for RES pigs) in the diet was fed from 60 kg live BW until slaughter at 105 kg (9 pigs/treatment). No ractopamine treatment effect (P greater than .05) was observed for either daily gain or gain/feed, although gain/feed was improved by 8% in both of the ad libitum groups. Ractopamine treatment resulted (P less than .01) in an overall reduction of carcass lipid by 8%, an increase of carcass protein by 5%, and a 21% improvement in the efficiency of protein utilization; the greatest changes occurred in the pigs fed the 12% CP diet (-17%, +11%, and +32%, respectively). The ad libitum daily feed intake was 15% less for pigs fed the 12% CP diet than for those fed the 18% CP diet (P less than .01), and there was a 10% reduction in intake of both diets with the addition of ractopamine (P less than .05). Four experiments using 580 barrows and 580 gilts (Study 1) and seven experiments using 500 barrows and 500 gilts (Study 2) were conducted at various geographical locations in the United States to determine the dose response of a pelleted form of porcine somatotropin (pST) relative to ADG, feed/gain (F/G), and percentage of carcass protein. Average initial weights for Studies 1 and 2 were 67.6 and 72.6 kg, respectively, and four pigs/pen were slaughtered when they achieved weights of 106.5 to 111.0 kg. In Study 1, pigs were implanted subcutaneously with pelleted pST doses of 0, 12, 24, 36, or 48 mg/wk and self-fed a corn-soybean meal diet containing 13.75% CP. Study 2 included two control groups self-fed a diet containing either 13.75 or 17% CP with added lysine. The pST-treated pigs were administered 12, 24, or 36 mg/wk, and all were offered the 17% CP diet. The pST treatments in Study 1 resulted in a linear reduction (P less than .05) in average daily feed intake (ADFI) and a quadratic (P less than .05) improvement in F/G and percentage of carcass protein. The pST treatments in Study 2 resulted in a linear reduction in ADFI (P less than .05), a linear improvement in F/G, and a quadratic increase in the percentage of carcass protein (P less than .05). Average daily gain was not affected in either study with this form of pST. The greatest increase in efficiency of lean gain was observed with the 36-mg dose for both Study 1 (9.4%) and Study 2 (10.8%). In Study 1, the force required to shear cores of the longissimus muscle was increased linearly with pST treatment (P less than .05). There was a similar linear increase in Study 2 with pST treatment (P less than .05); however, there was also an effect of sex (P less than .05) on shear force (gilts greater than barrows) that was similar in magnitude to that observed for pST treatment. Differences in sensory evaluation because of pST were minor and of the same magnitude as those observed between barrows and gilts. It was therefore concluded that weekly administration of pST improved F/G and percentage of carcass protein with no detrimental effects on palatability of cooked lean pork.  相似文献

To determine growth performance during and after injection of recombinant porcine somatotropin (rpSt), crossbred Yorkshire gilts and barrows (n = 54/gender, 27 to 42 kg BW) were blocked by BW and gender (n = 3 blocks/gender). Within each block, three pigs/gender were assigned randomly to each of six pens/block. A diet containing 24.8% CP was fed ad libitum. During the live weight period of 30 to 110 kg, pigs either remained as controls (one pen/block) or were injected (i.m.) daily with rpSt (120 micrograms/kg BW) during either 30 to 60, 30 to 100, 30 to 110, 60 to 100 or 60 to 110 kg BW. Thus, three gilts and three barrows in each of three pens received each treatment. Pigs were slaughtered at either 60 kg BW (1 d after rpSt injection) or 110 kg BW (1 d, 10 d or 70 d after rpSt injection). Relative to controls, pigs injected with rpSt exhibited faster and more efficient growth during the injection period (P less than .05) but slower and less efficient growth during 10 d after cessation of injection (P less than .05). Carcasses of pigs slaughtered 1 d or 10 d after rpSt injection were leaner than controls (P less than .05), but among the pigs treated with rpSt, carcasses of pigs withdrawn from rpSt for 10 d contained more fat (P less than .05) and had a lower percentage of muscle (P less than .05) than carcasses of pigs withdrawn from rpSt for 1 d. Development of gilts that conceive early and continue to produce offspring is an objective of swine production. We investigated different patterns of growth on reproductive development and performance of gilts through the first farrowing. At 13 wk of age and 43 kg BW, 286 white crossbred gilts were penned individually and assigned to treatments: Ad lib, ad libitum intake from 13 to 25 wk of age; Control, ad libitum intake from 13 wk of age until 100 kg BW and then 90% of ad libitum intake until 25 wk of age; and Restricted, 74% of ad libitum intake from 13 wk to 25 wk of age. Feed was formulated to restrict energy intake. The study was replicated in three seasons. At 25 wk of age, gilts were moved by treatment to group pens, fed for ad libitum consumption, and estrus detection was initiated. Gilts were inseminated at first estrus, and those recycling were remated. Postmating gilts were fed 1.5x maintenance until 105 to 110 d of pregnancy. Gilts were moved either to the farrowing facility or the abattoir at 105 to 110 d of pregnancy. Those taken to the abattoir were slaughtered and number, weight, and condition of the fetuses were recorded. Gilts moved to the farrowing facility were allowed to farrow, and number, weight, and condition of the piglets were recorded. Daily feed intake during breeding was 3.4 kg/d by Restricted gilts, 2.9 by Control gilts, and 2.7 kg/d by Ad lib gilts. Increased feed intake by Restricted gilts during breeding resulted in compensatory gains that overcame the reduced reproductive performance that resulted from the reduced BW and backfat these gilts carried at the start of breeding. Days to first estrus and pregnancy were not influenced by development period treatment (P < 0.13). Percentage of Ad lib, Control, and Restricted gilts that successfully completed their pregnancies were 61, 74, and 66, respectively (P > 0.19). Total feed fed from 13 wk of age to end of the first pregnancy per gilt assigned did not differ among Ad lib (506 kg) and Control (498 kg) gilts but was less (P < 0.01) in Restricted gilts (451 kg). Number of piglets born per gilt assigned (P > 0.09) and piglets produced per kilogram of feed fed from 13 wk of age to term (P > 0.29) were 6.47 and 0.0134 in Ad lib gilts, 7.26 and 0.0150 in Control gilts, and 6.38 and 0.0149 in Restricted gilts, respectively. Moderate feed restriction, 74% of ad libitum intake, reduced feed consumed from 13 wk of age to end of the first pregnancy with no significant impact on efficiency of piglet production.  相似文献

Eight steers from a group of 14 were fed ad libitum from 240 to 510 kg live weight, gaining at 1.4 +/- .2 kg/d. The six other steers were diet-restricted and grew at .37 +/- .09 kg/d from 240 to 307 kg, prior to ad libitum realimentation on the same diet to a final weight of 510 kg. Blood samples taken during the growth phases from both treatments were analyzed for insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), glucose (GLU), nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and (or) growth hormone (GH). During restricted growth, mean serum concentrations of GH were elevated (45.6 vs 23.4 ng/ml; P less than .05), serum concentrations of IGF-I decreased (108 vs 167 ng/ml; P less than .05) compared with control steers with ad libitum access to feed. Levels of T4 and GLU also were lower (P less than .05) during restricted than during normal growth. During early realimentation, levels of GLU (P less than .05), IGF-I (P less than .01), T4 and BUN (P less than .01) increased. Levels of T3 remained unchanged, whereas concentration of NEFA declined (P less than .001). Blood urea nitrogen decreased during early realimentation despite a large increase in diet protein intake and in protein storage, suggesting an increased efficiency of nitrogen use for protein synthesis. Two experiments, each with 36 barrows with high-lean-gain potential, were conducted to evaluate apparent nutrient digestibilities and performance and plasma metabolites of pigs fed corn-soybean meal diets (CONTROL) and low-protein diets. The low-protein diets were supplemented with crystalline lysine, threonine, tryptophan, and methionine either on an ideal protein basis (IDEAL) or in a pattern similar to that of the control diet (AACON). Amino acids were added on a true ileally digestible basis. The initial and final BW were, respectively, 31.5 and 82.3 kg in Exp. 1 and 32.7 and 57.1 kg in Exp. 2. In Exp. 1, the CONTROL and IDEAL diets were offered on an ad libitum basis or by feeding 90 or 80% of ad libitum intake. Pigs were fed for 55 d. In Exp. 2, the CONTROL, IDEAL, and AACON diets were offered on an ad libitum basis or by feeding 80% of the ad libitum intake. Pigs were fed for 27 d. Pigs fed the CONTROL diet had greater (P < 0.05) ADG and feed efficiency (G/F) than pigs fed the IDEAL (Exp. 1 and 2) and AACON diets (Exp. 2). As the level of feed intake decreased, ADG decreased (P < 0.05), but G/F tended to improve (P < 0.10) for pigs fed 90% of ad libitum in Exp. 1 and for pigs fed 80% of ad libitum in Exp. 2. In Exp. 1, the apparent total tract digestibilities of DM and energy were greater (P < 0.01) for pigs fed the IDEAL diet than for pigs fed the CONTROL diet. In Exp. 2, the apparent total tract digestibility of protein was greatest in pigs fed the CONTROL diet (P < 0.05) and was greater (P < 0.05) in pigs fed the AACON diet than in pigs fed the IDEAL diet. Plasma urea concentrations were lower in pigs fed the IDEAL diet than in pigs fed the CONTROL diet, regardless of feeding level. For pigs fed the CONTROL diet, plasma urea concentrations were lower when feed intake was 80% of ad libitum (diet level, P < 0.01). In summary, pigs fed the IDEAL and the AACON diets gained less and had lower plasma urea concentrations than pigs fed the CONTROL diet. Based on these data, it seems that the growth potential of pigs fed the IDEAL and AACON diets may have been limited by a deficiency of lysine, threonine, and(or) tryptophan and that the amino acid pattern(s) used was not ideal for these pigs.  相似文献
