The present study was carried out in order to compare the effects of xylazine and lidocaine on analgesia and cardiopulmonary parameters following epidural injection in goats. Twelve healthy Small East African goats of both sexes (mean +/- SD; 15.6 +/- 1.9 kg body weight) were used. The goats were randomly assigned to two groups of five and seven animals. The first group (n = 5) was given 2% lidocaine-HCl at 4400 micrograms/kg body weight. The second group (n = 7) was administered 2% xylazine-HCl at 150 micrograms/kg body weight. All drugs were diluted in 5 ml of sterile water and were injected epidurally through the lumbosacral interspace with the injection taking over 20 s. Both drugs induced analgesia within 5 min. Signs of sedation, cardiopulmonary changes and lateral recumbency developed within 5-7 min after administration of epidural xylazine. Tail flaccidity and hind limb paralysis developed 3 min after epidural administration of lidocaine. The time from recumbency to regaining normal stance was 60 and 158 min for xylazine- and lidocaine-treated animals respectively. Xylazine induced adequate analgesia of the flank and perineum, which extended to the head and forelimbs. In contrast, lidocaine induced adequate bilateral flank and perineal analgesia extending up to the third thoracic vertebra. For both drugs, analgesia of the flank and perineum persisted for the entire 180-min observational period. Epidural injection of xylazine and lidocaine caused variable depression effects on the cardiopulmonary values but was not so low as to cause concern. It is concluded that lumbosacral epidural injection of xylazine at 150 micrograms/kg body weight in 5 ml of water for injection offers the most desirable sedation and analgesia of the flank and perineum. The longer duration of analgesia may be useful for postoperative analgesia and relief of continuous straining in goats.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of epidural administration of hydromorphone on avoidance threshold to noxious electrical stimulation of the perineal, sacral, lumbar, and thoracic regions in horses. ANIMALS: 6 healthy adult horses. PROCEDURE: Horses were assigned to receive hydromorphone (0.04 mg/kg) or a control solution (20 mL of sterile water) administered epidurally into in the first intercoccygeal space. Treatments were administered at time intervals of > or = 7 days. Electrical stimulation was applied for 6 hours after epidural injection over the dermatomes of the perineal, sacral, lumbar, and thoracic regions, and the avoidance threshold voltage was recorded. RESULTS: Administration of sterile water did not change the avoidance threshold. Hydromorphone significantly increased the avoidance threshold by 20 minutes after injection, which lasted until 250 minutes after epidural administration in the perineal, sacral, lumbar, and thoracic regions. Profound analgesia (avoidance threshold > 40 V) was achieved only in the perineal region at 60 minutes after epidural administration of hydromorphone. Analgesia for all dermatomes was considered moderate for 250 minutes after epidural injection. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Epidural administration of hydromorphone increases the avoidance threshold to noxious electrical stimulation in the perineal, lumbar, sacral, and thoracic regions in horses for 250 minutes after injection. Hydromorphone epidural administration may prove useful in the management of horses with pain of moderate to mild intensity.  相似文献

: The aim of the present study was to investigate whether epidural administration of a xylazine-lidocaine combination accompanied by xylazine sedation would provide satisfactory analgesia for some surgical procedures on 10 calves admitted to the Department of Veterinary Surgery, University of Kafkas with perineal urolithiasis (n:2), rectovaginal fistula (n:1), atresia ani (n:2), omphalophlebitis (n:2), omphaloarteritis (n:1) and umbilical hernia (n:2).Following intramuscular injection of xylazine at a dose of 0.05 mg/kg for sedation, xylazine-lidocaine combination (0.2 mg/kg lidocaine + 0.02 mg/kg xylazine + 5 ml 0.9% NaCl) was administrated into the lumbosacral (L6-S1), sacrococcygeal (S5-Co1) or intercoccygeal (Co1-Co2) space. Heart rate, respiratory rate and rectal temperature were recorded prior to and during analgesia at 5, 10, 15, 30 and 60 minutes. Furthermore, depth and duration of analgesia were evaluated during surgical intervention.The study revealed that the combination of epidural xylazine-lidocaine with xylazine sedation was highly satisfactory for surgery of the lower urinary tract and the perineal region, but it was less so for surgery of the umbilical area.  相似文献

The sedative and physiological effects of intramuscular medetomidine (20 and 40 μg/kg) in dogs were compared with those of xylazine (2 mg/kg). The efficacy of atipamezole (200 μg/kg), as an antagonist given 15 or 45 minutes after medetomidine (40 μg/kg) was studied. Following medetomidine, onset of sedation was rapid, and depth and duration of sedation were dose dependent. The higher dose produced jaw relaxation, depression of the pedal reflex, downward rotation of the eye and dogs could be positioned for radiography of the hips. Side effects were similar after either medetomidine or xylazine, and included bradycardia, a fall in respiratory rate and muscle tremor. Vomiting during induction was less frequent after medetomidine than after xylazine. Intramuscular administration of atipamezole rapidly reversed the sedative effects of medetomidine. Signs of arousal were seen within three minutes; all dogs could stand within 10 minutes and appeared clinically normal. Heart and respiratory rates rose, but did not return to presedation values. Relapse to sedation was not noted.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the efficacy of a caudal epidural anaesthesia using lidocaine or xylazine in a high volume for analgesia of the flank, navel and hamstring tendon. Fourteen calves weighing 57.7 +/- 5.1 kg and 37.9 +/- 9.3 (mean +/- SEM) days old were randomly divided into two groups of seven calves each. Calves belonging to the lidocaine group were given a 2% lidocaine solution in the sacrococcygeal vertebral space epidurally at a volume of 0.4 ml/kg (8 mg/kg) body weight (BW). Animals of the xylazine group were administered an epidural anaesthesia with xylazine at a dose of 0.1 mg/kg BW, diluted with a 0.9% saline solution to a corresponding final volume of 0.4 ml/kg BW. Heart rate and respiratory rate were measured and the degree and duration of analgesia was determined by the response to a skin prick with a hypodermic needle over a period of 350 min after epidural injection. After epidural anaesthesia with lidocaine the mean heart rate increased during dorsal recumbency, whereas after xylazine both heart rate and respiratory rate decreased significantly (P < 0.05). The epidural injection of xylazine compared with lidocaine caused longer (P < 0.05) analgesia at the hamstring tendon (mean +/- SEM, 120.7 +/- 29.7 min versus 93.6 +/- 3.5 min) and at the flank (100.7 +/- 24.4 min versus 78.3 +/- 11.1 min). There were no differences in the intensity of analgesia between groups. After xylazine application analgesia at the navel was achieved for 95.0 +/- 14.1 min whereas after lidocaine injection sufficient analgesia at the navel was found in just two of seven calves for 55 and 95 min respectively. Based on above experiences, a second study was performed, in which a combination of xylazine and local anaesthetics was used and the injection volume was increased to prove the efficacy of caudal epidural anaesthesia in 15 calves (26.3 +/- 26.7 days; 57.1 +/- 19.5 kg) submitted to the clinic for regular umbilical surgery. In these cases the xylazine (0.1 mg/kg BW) was diluted with 2% lidocaine (n = 7) or 2% procaine (n = 8) to a corresponding final volume of 0.5-0.6 ml/kg BW. In all cases complete anaesthesia of the surgical area was achieved and no adverse effects were observed. Overall the high volume caudal epidural anaesthesia represents an effective, safe, cheap and easy to perform alternative for anaesthesia of the navel, flank and hamstring tendon in calves without major side effects.  相似文献

Effects of xylazine (1.1 mg/kg of body weight, IV bolus, plus 1.1 mg/kg/h infusion) and subsequent yohimbine (0.125 mg/kg, IV bolus) administration on the arrhythmogenic dose of epinephrine (ADE) in isoflurane (1.8% end-tidal)-anesthetized dogs were evaluated. The ADE was defined as the total dose of epinephrine that induced greater than or equal to 4 premature ventricular contractions within 15 seconds during a 3-minute infusion period or within 1 minute after the end of infusion. Total ADE values during isoflurane anesthesia, after xylazine administration, and after yohimbine injection were 36.6 +/- 8.45 micrograms/kg, 24.1 +/- 6.10 micrograms/kg, and 45.7 +/- 6.19 micrograms/kg, respectively. Intravenous xylazine administration significantly (P less than 0.05) increased blood pressure and decreased heart rate, whereas yohimbine administration induced a significant (P less than 0.05) decrease in blood pressure. induced a significant (P less than 0.05) decrease in blood pressure. After yohimbine administration, the ADE significantly (P less than 0.05) increased above that after isoflurane plus xylazine administration. After yohimbine administration, blood pressure measured immediately before epinephrine-induced arrhythmia was significantly (P less than 0.05) less than the value recorded during isoflurane plus xylazine anesthesia. Heart rate was unchanged among treatments immediately before epinephrine-induced arrhythmia. Seemingly, yohimbine possessed a protective action against catecholamine-induced arrhythmias in dogs anesthetized with isoflurane and xylazine.  相似文献

Opioid overdose in dogs is manifested by clinical signs such as excessive sedation, bradycardia, and hypothermia. The ability of two different intramuscular (i.m.) naloxone reversal regimens to reverse the opioid-induced effects of a fivefold overdose of long-acting transdermal fentanyl solution was evaluated in dogs. Twenty-four healthy Beagles were administered a single 13 mg/kg dose (fivefold overdose) of transdermal fentanyl solution and randomized to two naloxone reversal regimen treatment groups, hourly administration for 8 h of 40 (n = 8) or 160 μg/kg i.m. (n = 16). All dogs were sedated and had reduced body temperatures and heart rates (HRs) prior to naloxone administration. Both dosage regimens significantly reduced sedation (P < 0.001), and the 160 μg/kg naloxone regimen resulted in a nearly threefold lower odds of sedation than that of the 40 μg/kg i.m. naloxone regimen (P < 0.05). Additionally, naloxone significantly increased the mean body temperatures and HR (P < 0.001), although the 160 μg/kg regimen increased body temperature and HR more (P < 0.05). However, the narcotic side effects of fentanyl returned within 1-3 h following termination of the naloxone dosage regimens. The opioid-induced effects of an overdose of transdermal fentanyl solution can be safely and effectively reversed by either 40 or 160 μg/kg i.m. naloxone administered at hourly intervals.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of epidural administration of xylazine hydrochloride on the minimum alveolar concentration of isoflurane (MAC(ISAO)) and cardiopulmonary system in anesthetized dogs. ANIMALS: 6 clinically normal dogs. PROCEDURE: Dogs were anesthetized with isoflurane in oxygen after randomly being assigned to receive 1 of the following 4 treatments: epidural administration of saline (0.9% NaCl) solution or xylazine at a dose of 0.1, 0.2, or 0.4 mg x kg(-1). Experiments were performed on 5 occasions with at least a 1-week interval between experiments; each dog received all 4 treatments. Following instrumentation, the concentration of isoflurane was maintained constant for 15 minutes at the MAC(ISO) that had been determined for each dog, and data on heart rate, arterial blood pressure, respiratory rate, tidal volume, minute volume, arterial partial pressure of oxygen, arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide, and arterial pH were collected. The epidural treatment was administered, and 30 minutes later, data were again collected. From this point on, determination of the MAC(ISO) following epidural treatment (ie, MAC(ISO+EPI)) was initiated. Cardiopulmonary data were collected before each electrical supramaximal stimulus during MAC(ISO+EPI) determinations. RESULTS: The mean (+/-SD) MAC(ISO) was 1.29 +/- 0.04%. The epidural administration of xylazine at doses of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 mg x kg(-1) decreased the MAC(ISO), respectively, by 8.4 +/- 2.4%, 21.7 +/- 4.9%, and 33.4 +/- 2.64%. Cardiopulmonary effects were limited. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Epidural administration of xylazine decreases the MAC(ISO) in a dose-dependent manner and is associated with few cardiopulmonary effects in anesthetized dogs.  相似文献

Alteration in the arrhythmogenic dose of epinephrine (ADE) was determined in 6 healthy dogs under halothane anesthesia following the administration of xylazine at 1.1 mg/kg i.v. and acepromazine at 0.025 mg/kg i.v. The order of treatment was randomly assigned with each dog receiving both treatments and testing was carried out on 2 separate occasions with at least a 1 wk interval. The ADE determinations were made prior to drug administration during halothane anesthesia (CNTL) and then 20 min and 4 h following drug treatment. Epinephrine was infused for 3 min at increasing dose rates (2.5, 5.0, 10.0 micrograms/kg/min) until the arrhythmia criterion (4 or more intermittent or continuous premature ventricular contractions) was reached within the 3 min of infusion or the 1 min following cessation. The interinfusion interval was 20 min. There was a significant difference (P = 0.0001) in the ADE determined following acepromazine administration at 20 min (20.95 micrograms/kg +/- 2.28 SEM) compared to CNTL (6.64 micrograms/kg +/- 1.09), xylazine at 20 min (5.82 micrograms/kg +/- 0.95) and 4 h (6.13 micrograms/kg +/- 1.05), and acepromazine at 4 h (7.32 micrograms/kg +/- 0.34). No other significant differences existed (P < 0.05). In this study we were unable to show any sensitization to epinephrine following xylazine administration during halothane anesthesia, while a protective effect was shown with a low dose of acepromazine.  相似文献

Heart rate, arterial blood pressures, respiratory rate, body temperature, and central nervous system excitement were compared before and after epidural administration of morphine (0.1 mg/kg), butorphanol (0.08 mg/kg), alfentanil (0.02 mg/kg), tramadol (1.0 mg/kg), the k-opioid agonist U50488H (0.08 mg/kg), or sterile water using an incomplete Latin square crossover design in five conscious adult horses. Treatments were administered into the first intercoccygeal epidural space. Significant (P <.05) reductions in respiratory rate were detected after epidural administration of morphine, alfentanil, U50488H, and sterile water. Additionally, significant (P <.05) head ptosis was observed within the first hour after administration of morphine, U50488H, and tramadol, but neither of these changes appeared to be of clinical significance. No treatment-related changes in motor activity or behavior were observed.  相似文献

This study was carried out to determine whether yohimbine antagonizes the retrograde flow of spermatozoa into the urinary bladder of dogs caused by xylazine. Adult dogs were assigned to one of four groups of six dogs each and treated as follows: saline control, xylazine (2.2 mg/kg, i.m.), yohimbine (0.2 mg/kg, im.), yohimbine/xylazine (yohimbine, 0.2 mg/kg, i.m., followed 10 min later by xylazine. 2.2 mg/kg, i.m.). Pre- and post-treatment urine were collected by cystocentesis from all dogs. The mean (± SD) adjusted total number of spermatozoa in the post-treatment urine of xylazine-treated dogs (141.02 ± 136.75 × 106) was 15 times higher ( P < 0.05) than the number in the post-treatment urine of control dogs (9.16 ± 20.26 × 106), 1763 times higher ( P < 0.05) than the number in the urine of yohimbine-treated dogs (0.08 ± 0.20 × 106), and 56 times higher ( P < 0.05) than the total number in the post-treatment urine of yohimbine/xylazine-treated dogs (2.54 ± 4.54 × 106). These results confirm that xylazine induces a significant ( P = 0.007) displacement of spermatozoa into the urinary bladder of dogs and demonstrate that pre-treatment with yohimbine prevents this effect.  相似文献

Eight adult female cattle (6 Holstein, 1 Jersey, 1 Brown Swiss) were used to determine the antagonistic effects of tolazoline, and alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonist, on xylazine-induced (via caudal epidural administration) depression of CNS, respiratory, and cardiovascular activity and rumen motility. A 2% solution of xylazine HCl was injected into the epidural space at the first coccygeal interspace, using a dosage of 0.05 mg/kg of body weight, diluted to a 5-ml volume with sterile water, and administered at a rate of approximately 1 ml/30 s. Eight minutes after xylazine injection, either tolazoline (0.3 mg/kg) or saline solution (4 ml) was administered IV. All 8 cattle were treated, using both regimens in a random sequence; at least 1 week elapsed between treatments. Epidurally administered xylazine induced caudal analgesia (S3 to coccyx), as evaluated by no response to superficial and deep muscular pinprick, and induced sedation, cardiopulmonary depression, and inhibition of rumen motility, but all cattle remained standing. Tolazoline effectively reversed xylazine-induced rumen hypomotility, and partially antagonized xylazine-induced cardiopulmonary depression without affecting sedation and desirable local (S3 to coccyx) analgesic effects.  相似文献

The sedative effects in horses of the new α2-agonist medetomidine were compared with those of xylazine. Four ponies and one horse were treated on separate occasions with two doses of medetomidine (5 mμ/kg bodyweight and 10 μg/kg bodyweight) and with one dose of xylazine (1 μg/kg bodyweight) given by intravenous injection. Medetomidine at 10 μg/kg was similar to 1 mg/kg xylazine in sedative effect but produced greater and more prolonged ataxia. Ataxia was so severe following 10 μg/kg of medetomidine that one animal fell over during the study. Medetomidine (5 μg/kg) produced less sedation but a similar degree of ataxia to 1 mg/kg xylazine.  相似文献

Objective— To compare analgesic efficacy of preoperative versus postoperative administration of carprofen and to determine, if preincisional mepivacaine epidural anesthesia improves postoperative analgesia in dogs treated with carprofen. Study Design— Blind, randomized clinical study. Animals— Dogs with femoral (n=18) or pelvic (27) fractures. Methods— Dogs were grouped by restricted randomization into 4 groups: group 1=carprofen (4 mg/kg subcutaneously) immediately before induction of anesthesia, no epidural anesthesia; group 2=carprofen immediately after extubation, no epidural anesthesia; group 3=carprofen immediately before induction, mepivacaine epidural block 15 minutes before surgical incision; and group 4=mepivacaine epidural block 15 minutes before surgical incision, carprofen after extubation. All dogs were administered carprofen (4 mg/kg, subcutaneously, once daily) for 4 days after surgery. Physiologic variables, nociceptive threshold, lameness score, pain, and sedation (numerical rating scale [NRS], visual analog scale [VAS]), plasma glucose and cortisol concentration, renal function, and hemostatic variables were measured preoperatively and at various times after surgery. Dogs with VAS pain scores >30 were administered rescue analgesia. Results— Group 3 and 4 dogs had significantly lower pain scores and amount of rescue analgesia compared with groups 1 and 2. VAS and NRS pain scores were not significantly different among groups 1 and 2 or among groups 3 and 4. There was no treatment effect on renal function and hemostatic variables. Conclusions— Preoperative carprofen combined with mepivacaine epidural anesthesia had superior postoperative analgesia compared with preoperative carprofen alone. When preoperative epidural anesthesia was performed, preoperative administration of carprofen did not improve postoperative analgesia compared with postoperative administration of carprofen. Clinical Relevance— Preoperative administration of systemic opioid agonists in combination with regional anesthesia and postoperative administration of carprofen provides safe and effective pain relieve in canine fracture repair.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare intravenous regional anesthesia (IVRA) and brachial plexus block (BPB) for intra-operative analgesia in dogs undergoing pancarpal arthrodesis (PA). Twenty dogs scheduled for PA were intramuscularly sedated with acepromazine (0.03mg/kg), general anesthesia was intravenously (IV) induced with thiopental (10mg/kg) and, after intubation, maintained with isoflurane in oxygen. In 10 dogs (GIVRA) IVRA was performed on the injured limb administering 0.6ml/kg of 0.5% lidocaine. In 10 dogs (GBPB) the BPB was performed at the axillary level with the help of a nerve stimulator and 0.3ml/kg of a 1:1 solution of 2% lidocaine and 1% ropivacaine was injected. During surgery fentanyl (0.002mg/kg IV) was administered if there was a 15% increase of HR and/or MAP compared to the values before surgical stimulation. All the standard cardiovascular and respiratory parameters were continuously monitored during surgery. The duration of surgery and the time of extubation were recorded. Data were compared with a 1-way ANOVA test (P<0.05). No patients required fentanyl administration during surgery. All the recorded parameters were similar in the two groups. The two techniques were similar in providing intra-operative analgesia in dogs undergoing orthopaedic surgery.  相似文献

Objective To directly compare the time to onset and duration of analgesia produced by a lidocaine/xylazine combination with that produced by lidocaine and xylazine administered alone in the caudal epidural space of dairy cattle. Design Prospective randomized experimental study. Animals Nine adult (> 4 years of age) dairy cows (520–613 kg). Methods Caudal epidural analgesia was produced in all cows with 2% lidocaine (0.22 mg kg?1; 5.5 mL 500 kg?1), 10% xylazine (0.05 mg kg?1 diluted to 5.5 mL 500 kg?1 with sterile water), and 2% lidocaine/10% xylazine (0.22 mg kg?1/0.05 mg kg?1; total volume of 5.7 mL 500 kg?1), at no earlier than weekly intervals in a Latin square design. Time to onset, duration and cranial spread of analgesia were recorded, as were degree of sedation, ataxia and ptyalism. Results No significant difference (p > 0.05) was noted for time (mean ± SEM) of onset of analgesia between lidocaine (4.8 ± 1.0 minutes) and the lidocaine/xylazine combination (5.1 ± 0.9 minutes) but onset of analgesia following xylazine was significantly longer (11.7 ± 1.0 minutes) than either of the other two treatments. Lidocaine/xylazine (302.8 ± 11.0 minutes) produced analgesia of significantly longer duration than that of xylazine (252.9 ± 18.9 minutes) and both the lidocaine/xylazine combination and xylazine alone produced analgesia of significantly longer duration than that produced by lidocaine (81.8 ± 11.8 minutes). In all cattle, xylazine, administered either alone or with lidocaine, induced mild to moderate sedation and ataxia and cutaneous analgesia from the coccyx to T13. Mild ataxia was also present in those cattle receiving lidocaine alone. Conclusion The combination of xylazine and lidocaine produces analgesia of quicker onset and longer duration than xylazine administered alone and of longer duration than lidocaine administered alone. Clinical relevance Utilizing this combination, long‐duration obstetrical and surgical procedures could commence relatively soon after epidural injection and could be completed without re‐administration of anesthetic agents.  相似文献

Different doses of MK-467, a peripheral alpha(2)-adrenergic receptor antagonist, with or without dexmedetomidine were compared in conscious dogs. Eight animals received either dexmedetomidine (10 μg/kg [D]), MK-467 (250 μg/kg [M250] or dexmedetomidine (10 μg/kg) with increasing doses of MK-467 (250 μg/kg [DM250], 500 μg/kg [DM500] and 750 μg/kg [DM750], respectively). Treatments were given intravenously (i.v.) in a randomized, crossover design with a 14-day washout period. Systemic hemodynamics and arterial blood gas analyses were recorded at baseline and at intervals up to 90 min after drugs administration. Dexmedetomidine alone decreased heart rate, cardiac index and tissue oxygen delivery and increased mean arterial pressure and systemic vascular resistance 5 min after administration. DM250 did not completely prevent these early effects, while DM750 induced a decrease in mean arterial pressure. With DM500, systemic hemodynamics remained stable throughout the observational period. MK-467 alone increased cardiac index and tissue oxygen delivery and had no deleterious adverse effects. No differences in arterial blood gases were observed between treatments that included dexmedetomidine. It was concluded that MK-467 attenuated or prevented dexmedetomidine's systemic hemodynamic effects in a dose-dependent manner when given simultaneously i.v. but had no effect on the pulmonary outcome in conscious dogs. A 50:1 dose ratio (MK-467:dexmedetomidine) induced the least alterations in cardiovascular function.  相似文献

Effects and interaction of nifedipine (Ca channel blocker) and xylazine (mixed alpha agonist) during halothane anesthesia were examined in 6 dogs. After achievement of steady-state halothane (1.35%) anesthesia, blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) were recorded in these dogs during 3-minute saline or nifedipine (20 micrograms/kg) infusion periods. Seven minutes after the end of saline or nifedipine infusion, xylazine (1.1 mg/kg of body weight) was infused over a 2-minute period. After saline pretreatment, xylazine administration increased diastolic BP (33.67 +/- 3.91 mm of Hg) and decreased HR. Nifedipine infusion induced a transient reduction in BP, accompanied by a more persistent increase in HR. Compared with saline pretreatment, nifedipine pretreatment significantly decreased the acute increase in diastolic BP (33.67 +/- 3.91 vs 14.00 +/- 2.94 mm of Hg) which occurred during xylazine injection. After saline and nifedipine infusions, xylazine administration decreased HR 30 +/- 15.02 and 36.5 +/- 10.36 beats/min, respectively. A pronounced sinus arrhythmia and/or 2nd-degree atrioventricular block developed in all dogs during xylazine injection after saline infusion. Arrhythmias were not observed in the dogs after nifedipine infusion. Nifedipine's Ca blocking action depressed xylazine-induced acute vasoconstriction and concomitant increase in diastolic BP. Because alpha 2-, but not alpha 1-adrenoceptor-mediated vasoconstriction is Ca-dependent, these results indicate that a portion of the acute pressor response induced by IV xylazine in halothane-anesthetized dogs may be alpha 2-mediated. Seemingly, nifedipine-induced hypotension and damping of xylazine-induced increases in BP attenuated xylazine's actions on cardiac rate and rhythm.  相似文献

Clinical status, skin biopsy specimens, and endocrine function were evaluated in normal-coated Pomeranians (n = 12) and Pomeranians affected with growth hormone (GH)-responsive dermatosis (n = 7), then were compared with values in mixed-breed dog controls (n = 19). All Pomeranians were clinically normal; however, the Pomeranians with GH-responsive dermatosis had bilateral alopecia and hyperpigmentation of the trunk, caudal portion of the thighs, and ventral neck region. Skin biopsy specimens from the affected Pomeranians had decreased-to-normal epidermal thickness and follicular atrophy, compared with normal-coated Pomeranians. Numerous elastin fibers were observed in the skin biopsy specimens of unaffected and affected Pomeranians. Both groups of Pomeranians had normal results of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) and thyrotropin (TSH) response, adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) stimulation, and dexamethasone suppression testing. There was no significant increase in serum GH concentration in either group of Pomeranians after xylazine or human GH-releasing factor (GHRF) administration, whereas control dogs had significant (P less than or equal to 0.05) increase in serum GH concentration after administration of either agent. Baseline plasma ACTH concentration in unaffected and affected Pomeranians was increased above the normal range (40 to 90 pg/ml). Post-ACTH administration serum progesterone, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, and androgen (dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate or androstenedione) concentrations were consistently high in unaffected and affected Pomeranians, compared with values in control dogs.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Objective— To characterize the clinical signs, diagnostic and surgical findings, and outcome of dogs with idiopathic sterile pyogranulomatous inflammation (ISP) of epidural fat causing spinal cord compression.
Study Design— Retrospective study.
Animals— Dogs (n=5).
Methods— Dogs with epidural ISP (2002–2006) were identified retrospectively. Inclusion criteria were neurologic examination, myelography, and definitive diagnosis of ISP confirmed by surgery and histopathologic examination of epidural spinal cord compressive tissue.
Results— The most common clinical sign was paraparesis/paraplegia. No abnormalities were detected by laboratory testing or survey spine radiographs. On myelography, extradural spinal cord compressions were focal (dogs 1, 3, and 5) or multifocal (dogs 2 and 4). Surgical decompression of the spinal cord was completed by hemilaminectomy. Epidural fat collected surgically had pyogranulomatous inflammation of unknown cause and was histologically similar to subcutaneous ISP. All dogs had good long-term neurologic outcome (10–45 months follow-up). Some dogs had episodes of ISP at other sites before or after surgical treatment of epidural ISP, suggesting there may be a systemic form of ISP.
Conclusion— Epidural ISP may cause a spinal cord compressive lesion in Miniature Dachshunds, which can be treated by surgical decompression of the spinal cord with or without administration of adjunctive steroids.
Clinical Relevance— Epidural ISP should be considered as a possible cause of thoracolumbar myelopathy for Miniature Dachshunds.  相似文献
