A growth study of Pinctada mazatlanica and Pteria sterna was conducted to explain the basic steps required for the development of a pearl culture program in México. Seed for both species was collected using onion bags filled with black polyethylene sheets (40 ± 80 cm) and 5 g of vexar filament. The spatfall was July-August 1987 for P. mazatlanica and December 1987-February 1988 for P. sterna . The seed (12.8 ± 1.2 and 13.0 ± 0.6 mm respectively) was placed in pearl-nets for intermediate culture (to attain 30 mm height). Populations were subsequently divided into three groups, two groups at 10 m depth in lantern and pocket nets and a third placed over a submerged shelf at 10 m depth in plastic net cages. Growth in height, survival and temperature were monitored. After 22 mo P. mazatlanica showed no significant differences in growth between culture structures. Nevertheless, the survival obtained in cages (99%) was larger than that obtained in hanging structures (65%). After 18 mo of culture, significant differences (F = 5.199 P = 0.05) in growth were observed for P. sterna . Larger animals were found in pockets (106.6 ± 0.8 mm) followed by lanterns (104.0 ± 0.7 mm) and finally in cages (103.5 ± 0.6 mm). Survival in pockets was 99%, 84% in lanterns and 98% in cages. With the operation of the different culture structures used in this study, the bottom cage system seems optimal to begin a culture program to obtain pearl-oysters for nucleus implantation.  相似文献

Pearl oysters Pinctada mazatlanica (Hanley 1856) and Pteria sterna (Gould 1851) were studied for an annual cycle of in situ growth from May 1992 to April 1993. Organisms generated from extensive culture were kept under repopulation conditions at Caleta El Merito. Growth measurements of shell height and length were taken monthly. Data were used to build the annual growth curve of both species, to test the temporal relationship between shell height and length, to calculate monthly and total growth rate, to follow the modal progression with the ELEFAN software, and to fit the growth curve to the Von Bertalanffy equation. Growth dimensions increased steadily during the annual cycle, from 7 to 18 months old for P. mazatlanica and from 11 to 22 months for P. sterna. No significant differences were detected between shell height and length during growth, although length seemed to grow faster. The ELEFAN program identified two modes in P. mazatlanica (Rn= 0.205) and a single one for P. sterna (Rn= 0.557). A positive correlation to the Von Bertalanffy equation was seen for both species (r2= 0.97 for both species).  相似文献

Juvenile northern Chilean scallops of 937±55 μm shell height were exposed to five different concentrations of chloramphenicol (CHL) (5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 μg mL−1), plus a control without antibiotics. To determine the effect of CHL on the accompanying microflora, the number of colony-forming units (CFU) that grew on TGE culture medium was counted in the seawater of containers with juveniles, and in containers with microalgae used as food. Both were exposed to the same concentrations of CHL. The growth rates of juveniles treated with CHL and the control without antibiotic showed highly significant differences ( P =0.0001). The growth rate was inversely proportional to the CHL concentration. The control sample presented the highest growth rate (84.4±14.3 μm day−1), followed by the sample treated with 5 μg mL−1 (64.2±14.3 μm day−1). The survival in the control and in the treated samples with 5–50 μg mL−1 was rather high, with a mean value of 95%. Only the sample treated with 100 μg mL−1 had a low survival (36.7%). The CFU count was larger in the containers with juveniles, when compared with the ones with food. The CFU count tended to decrease with increasing CHL concentration in the juveniles.  相似文献

Studies on larval settlement and growth of the commercial scallop Aequipecten tehuelchus were carried out over a 2-yr period in San Matias Gulf, Argentina. Gonadal index was used to indicate spawning and spat collectors were deployed when spawning began. Artificial spat collectors (mono-filament bags filled with thin shrub branches) were placed at a depth of 25 m in two areas of the Gulf during two seasons (1989–1990 and 1991–1992). Maximum settlement occurred by mid-February during the first season and by mid-January in the second season. Larger numbers of spat were found in collectors placed near the sea bottom. After settlement, spat were removed and placed in cages for growout. Scallops reached the average commercial size (60 mm shell height) 16 mo later. Mortality rate during the entire period was 10%.  相似文献

Collection and suspended culture of Argopecten purpuratus spat in Japanese-type collectors was undertaken in the Rinconada Marine Reserve (Antofagasta, Chile) to determine growth variations between surface and bottom waters. Scallop spat was collected at 16-m depth and grown at 1- and 16-m depths. An initial settlement of ca. 13,000 post-larvae per bottom collector (2 cohorts) was observed on 3 February 2001. Two new cohorts settled in bottom collectors on 3 March, while no spat settlement occurred in surface collectors. The four cohorts exhibited substantial and different mortality rates over the study period, depending on the cohort and on-growing depth. The first and second cohorts exhibited mortality rates of 80.3 and 53.1% in bottom collectors, respectively, versus 29 and 43.6% in surface structures. The third and fourth cohorts exhibited mortality rates of 21.4 and 59.7% in bottom collectors, respectively. Mean shell height of scallop spat after 88 days of culture was 6.46 mm for the first cohort and 4.37 mm for the second cohort in bottom collectors, versus 10.33 and 7.31 mm in surface collectors, respectively. Mean post-larval growth rate in bottom collectors (86 μm day−1) was significantly lower than growth rate in surface collectors (146 μm day−1). Factors explaining the depth-related mortality and growth rates are discussed to improve scallop culture in the Reserve. It was concluded from the results that culture improvement in Antofagasta Bay would require collecting spat in bottom waters and raising it near the surface during initial cultivation stages.  相似文献

The Calafia mother‐of‐pearl oyster, Pinctada mazatlanica (Hanley), and the Rainbow nacre shell, Pteria sterna (Gould), represent an important resource for México because of their potential in pearl production. The present work deals with the effect of different sequences of nursery culture‐late culture on growth and survival of P. mazatlanica, from September 1993 to October 1994. The collected spat presented two main size groups: small (mean shell height of 7 mm), and large (13 mm). They were arranged into four experimental batches for each size group at a constant stocking density of 40–45 juvenile pearl oysters per Nestier cage. Three batches remained in nursery culture for 2, 4 and 6 months respectively, after which they were transferred to late culture in rail cages. A control group remained in nursery culture for 12 months. Growth was evaluated monthly and compared through anova and HSD Tukey tests. In addition to the shell height, width, depth (mm) and weight (g), data of shell volume (height × width × depth, in mm3) was also introduced to estimate and compare growth among the experimental groups. Mortality was estimated by counting the dead specimens every month and obtaining the percentage from a 100% initial survival at the start of the experiment. The juveniles showed different responses to the change from nursery culture to late culture; the level of each response varied significantly among the experimental groups at the end of the study. It seemed that a 6‐month period for nursery culture was propitious for P. mazatlanica.  相似文献

Low numbers and unreliable wild catch of the native flat oyster, Ostrea angasi , spat has resulted in the NSW flat oyster industry being reliant on hatchery-produced spat. The need to produce culchless spat in the hatchery stimulated investigation of several catecholamines to induce metamorphosis in O. angasi larvae. Larvae were treated with one of four neuroactive catecholamines (epinephrine, epinephrine bitartrate, l -Dopa and GABA) at one of four concentrations (10−3, 10−4, 10−5 or 10−6  m ) for one of three treatment durations (0.5, 1–2 h) to determine morphogenic action for culchless spat production. Epinephrine bitartrate at 10−3 and 10−4  m and epinephrine at 10−3, 10−4 and 10−5  m , for a treatment duration of 1–2 h, produced significantly greater numbers of spat and culchless spat, compared with any other treatment combination. The other catecholamines tested did not induce a significant increase in the total number of spat or culchless spat, over untreated controls. Separate trials found that long-term treatment (24 h) with epinephrine bitartrate and epinephrine at morphogenic concentrations inhibited metamorphosis. Consecutive daily use of epinephrine bitartrate increased the numbers of spat and culchless spat produced, but did not affect larval or short-term post-larval survival. Treatment with 10−3  m epinephrine bitartrate or 10−4  m epinephrine for 1 h is recommended for routine commercial production of culchless flat oyster spat.  相似文献

In Southeastern Brazil, there is good cultivation potential for the pearl oyster Pinctada imbricata, which is often found on mussel ropes or seed collectors across the north coast of Sao Paulo State. Despite this, very few studies have focused on the biology of this species in Brazil. This research aimed to partially address this lack of information by evaluating the optimal season and preferred depth range (surface, first and second metres of depth) for the settlement of juvenile P. imbricata on artificial collectors. Two replicate artificial collectors made from braided fishing nets and comprising of horizontally and vertically suspended lines were deployed at Cocanha Beach, Brazil, and left in situ for a period of 5 months. At the end of the deployment period, the density of juveniles was significantly greater on the surface than the first and second metres of depth. It was also found that the period from November to March was more favourable for the placement of collectors and settlement of juveniles. Furthermore the results of the study confirm that is feasible to capture juvenile P. imbricata using artificial collectors to provide a continuous supply of commercial cultures.  相似文献

The combined effects of temperature and diet on the growth and biochemical composition of juveniles of the pearl oyster Pinctada mazatlanica at the hatchery were investigated. Specimens were subjected to a combination of four temperatures (20, 23, 26 and 29 °C) and five microalgal diets ( Isochrysis galbana alone, I. galbana + Pavlova salina, I. galbana + Chaetoceros muelleri, C. muelleri + P. salina and I. galbana + P. salina + C. muelleri ). An increase in shell height occurred in a linear pattern, while wet weight gain fitted a power law. Temperature, more than diet, exerted a stronger influence on the growth and condition of the specimens. The combination of 29 °C with P. salina+C. muelleri led to the fastest growth in shell height, while the combination of 29 °C with I. galbana + C. muelleri led to the highest wet and dry weight biomass. In contrast, specimens grew significantly less in shell height and wet weight at 20 °C, regardless of the diet. At all temperatures, the monoalgal diet of I. galbana led to the slowest growth of specimens, but in turn favoured the highest levels of protein, carbohydrate and lipid reserves as a possible strategy to store more energy reserves under stressful events.  相似文献

Spatfall of pearl oyster, Pteria sterna (Gould), was analysed at two sites, stations Gaviota and Merito, at Bahía de La Paz, South Baja California, Mexico, during an annual cycle in 1991-1992. and from surface to 15 m depth. Sampling was carried out monthly using experimental collectors which remained immersed for 60-65 days. Four different substrates were tested for spat settlement preference: a native bush called ‘chivato’, dry palm leaves, and red and yellow plastic onion bags: temporal variations, and horizontal and vertical spatfall distribution patterns were evaluated between and within stations. Spat settlement showed significant differences depending on the structure and texture of the substrate type. Chivato bush was in general the best spat collector, but was difficult to handle for large-scale operations; plastic onion bags were more suitable and spat yield was adequate; palm leaves were poor spat collectors. There was no evidence for colour preference of spat settlement between red and yellow onion bags. Pteria sterna spat were present throughout almost all of the study period. Main spatfall was detected in winter-spring, coinciding with low temperatures; most spat then occurred from surface to 4-5 m depth. Few spat were present in summer and most then occurred below 7-9 m depth. The distribution patterns of spat within substrate replicates were apparently influenced by the abundance of spatfall. Aggregated spatial patterns were evident in shallow water during months of maximum spatfall but not when spat was less abundant. These events did not occur in the same substrate type, and differences were also detected between stations. Trends were related to oceanographic conditions prevailing at each site. Two patterns of spatfall abundance and vertical distribution were evident, one for winter-spring, and the other for summer. Samples at station Gaviota were grouped by spatfall abundance and spat vertical distribution patterns, while the latter defined better the grouping of samples at station Merito. Geographical variations of spatfall characteristics for Pteria sterna itself, and in comparison with Pinctada mazatlanka (Hanley) in the Gulf of California, are discussed.  相似文献

The main objective of the REPERE (REcherche sur le Petoncle a des fins d'Elevage et de REpeuplement) research programme, initiated in the Iles-de-la-Madeleine in 1991, was to enhance natural sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) populations which were greatly reduced by overfishing. Sea bed seeding was chosen as the best approach to achieve this goal. In 1992, after two years of scientific research work, mainly centred on producing a supply of juveniles and developing intermediate culture methods, the Scallop Fishermen's Association, supported by governmental financing, initiated a commercial seeding project. Two thousand collectors were set out in open waters suitable for spat settlement. A collecting rate of 780 spat per collector produced a catch of 1.5 million spat. Technical problems led to significant losses of juveniles. Intermediate culture in pearl nets in a lagoon, between July and October 1993, enhanced growth noticeably. At an age of 1 y, average shell height was 32 mm. In the fall of 1993, 30 000 young scallops were seeded on a natural bed closed to fishing. Ten thousand collectors were set out in the fall of 1993. Collecting success was 1145 spat per collector and spat losses were reduced by technical improvements. In November 1994, 1.5 million scallops were seeded on a sea bed closed to the fishery. Scallops from the 1994 seeding could reach market size (90 mm) by 1997.  相似文献

The spatfall prediction techniques used in Hiroshima Bay, Japan, are described. Data are given for the 1977 season. Plankton hauls from seven stations showed successive high peaks of small, medium and large larvae during early August. Small larvae (< 150 μm diameter) peaked at an average of 1,782 larvae per tonne of sea water (m3) on 10 August; medium larvae (151–250 μm) at 1,258/m3 peaked on 12 August as did large settling larvae (251–300 μm) at 350/m3. A small spatfall occurred on 14, 16 and 18 August when an average of 65, 64 and 65 spat per shell, respectively, attached on collectors during 2 days' immersion.A second, much bigger peak of small larvae built up from 16 August to reach an average maximum of 4,702 larvae/m3 on 24 August. Medium larvae peaked at 754 larvae/m3 on 28 August. A red tide then appeared consisting of vast numbers of a dinoflagellate tentatively identified as Gymnodinium simplex, and the anticipated main spatfall did not occur. The effects of red tides are discussed. By 17 September water conditions had improved and an estimated 50–100 spat were reported attached per shell on the collectors. This is about half the 200 spat per shell considered by the industry to be a good set.  相似文献

Abstract Wild-caught mutton snapper Lutjanus analis , a high-value marine food fish species, matured in flow-through seawater (36 g/L) tanks after 3 yr in captivity. On 31 May 1995, a female with a mean oocyte diameter of 382 μm was injected with human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) (500 IU/kg body wt.) followed 24 h later by a second injection (1,000 IU/kg body wt.). At the time of the second injection, three males were injected with HCG (500 IU/ kg body wt.). Voluntary spawning occurred 33 h after the first injection, with a total of 534, 781 eggs released. Fertilization rate was 75.7%, while average diameter of fertilized eggs was 783 μm. Embryos were stocked in a 30-m3 outdoor tank at a density of 10.5/L. On day 2 post-hatching (d2ph), larval density was 8.61 larvae/L, and average notochord length was 2.6 mm. Larvae were fed ss-type rotifers from dl-d28ph, Artemia nauplii from 0–08ph, and artificial diets (52–48% protein) from d24-d38ph. On d38ph, fish averaged 0.308 g and 22.2 mm standard length. Survival (from d2ph) was 14.3%, with a total of 36,900 post-metamorphic juveniles produced. On d97ph, 1,390 hatchery-reared juveniles (avg. wt. = 10.5 g) were stocked into two 14.5-m3 recirculating seawater tanks (695 fish/tank; 48 fish/m3) and fed a 56% protein pellet. After 168 d, fish averaged 140.8 g, with a survival rate of 97.8% and a feed conversion ratio (dry wt./wet wt.) of 1.2. These preliminary results reveal the mutton snapper to be a prime, new candidate species for commercial cultivation.  相似文献

SUMMARY: This study was designed to determine the critical photon irradiance for growth and daily compensation point of juvenile Sargassum macrocarpum . Sampling and measurement of natural light conditions were carried out in the S. macrocarpum population at a depth of 8 m off Kiwado in Fukawa Bay, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, from April to June 1998. Photosynthesis and respiration of the juvenile thalli, and diurnal changes in solar irradiance were measured for the same period. The critical photon irradiance for growth of the juvenile thalli observed on the population floor was 1.0–1.5% on the sea surface. The photosynthetic rate of leaf of juvenile thalli increased linearly with increasing photon irradiance when light levels were lower than 50 μM/m2 per s. The respiratory rate and light compensation point of the juvenile thalli were 2.49 μL O2/cm2 per h and 4.98 μM/m2 per s, respectively. The daily compensation point was estimated with a mathematical model based on photosynthesis–light equations and diurnal changes in solar irradiance. For a day of average solar irradiance over the period of the present study, the estimated daily compensation point of the juvenile thalli was 1.3% on the sea surface. This value agreed well with the observed critical photon irradiance for growth of juvenile S . macrocarpum on the population floor. The results of the study confirm that the mathematical model is effective for estimating the daily compensation point.  相似文献

Juvenile rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) were fed six low-phosphorus (P) diets supplemented with two different sizes of ground fish bone-meals (fine, 68 μm or less; coarse, 250–425 μm) and a coarse bone-meal diet containing four levels of citric acid (0, 4, 8 or 16 g kg−1 diet) to investigate the effects of pH and bone particle size on P bioavailability. The basal diet provided 3.4 g P   kg−1 and bone-meal increased P contents to 5.4–6.0 g P   kg−1. Coarse bone-meal diets supplemented with 0, 4, 8 or 16 g kg−1 of citric acid had pH values of 6.0, 5.7, 5.4 and 5.0, respectively. Weight gain and whole-body water, protein and lipid contents were not influenced by bone-meal supplementation. Supplementing the basal diet with both coarse and fine bone-meal significantly increased whole-body ash content. Fish fed no bone-meal were hypophosphataemic compared with fish fed with either fine or coarse bone-meals. Phosphorus in fine bone-meal had higher availability than P in coarse bone-meal. Bone-meal supplementation significantly decreased whole-body manganese content from 8.9 μg g−1 in fish fed no bone-meal to 2.3 and 4.5 μg g−1 in fish fed with fine and coarse bone-meals, respectively. The concentration of magnesium increased but zinc concentration was not affected by bone-meal supplements. Citric acid increased whole-body ash content but the influence of citric acid on the body P content was not significant ( P  = 0.07). Dietary acidification by citric acid significantly increased whole-body iron in a linear fashion. The bioavailability of dietary P can be improved by fine grinding the bone in fish meals.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   The effects caused by suspended particles in seawater and sediment cover of the substrate on the attachment to the substrate of zoospores, and on the subsequent growth and survival of gametophytes of the brown alga Eisenia bicyclis were examined in the laboratory. The attachment rate to the substrate of the zoospores was remarkably reduced by the sediment cover on the substrate, and it decreased to 3.8% of the no-sediment control by a slight sediment cover of 3.0 mg/cm2 (0.048 mm in thickness). The growth of gametophytes was not inhibited at 10 mg/cm2 or less of sediment cover, though it was stopped at 30 mg/cm2. The survival rate of gametophytes became 39.4% at 5 mg/cm2 on the substrate, and gametophytes were all blighted at 30 mg/cm2. The ratio of male to female of the surviving gametophytes became 81.5:18.5, when the sediment cover was 10 mg/cm2. The rate of total loss ( TL [%]) of zoospores and gametophytes of Eisenia bicyclis was obtained from the following equation: TL  = 100 (1 − exp[−0.0339  C ] exp[−1.24  Q ]), where, C (mg/L) and Q (mg/cm2) indicate the concentration of suspended particles in seawater and the sediment on the substrate, respectively.  相似文献

Juvenile Haliotis rufescens were reared in the laboratory in order to investigate the extent to which fresh kelp and formulated feeds with 250 g kg−1 (25P) and 380 g kg−1 protein content (38P) affected their growth rate, gut residence time (GRT), food consumption ( C ), food conversion ratio (FCR) and digestibility. Abalone from 38P attained the highest growth rate (70.5 ± 4.2 μm day−1; 98.3 ± 6.95 μg day−1), followed by 25P (47.9 ± 2.79 μm day−1; 67.4 ± 2.82 μg day−1) and kelp (23.6 ± 3.36 μm day−1; 28.2 ± 4.11 μg day−1). No significant differences were observed in consumption rate among treatments (0.61–0.68% body weight per day), yet kelp-fed abalone exhibited higher FCR (2.44), protein efficiency ratio (4.42), and apparent digestibility of dry matter (69.5%), protein (69.8%) and gross energy (79.2%) than 38P organisms (59.8, 62.4 and 62.2%, respectively). They also showed longer GRT (23.1 ± 0.93 h). This study demonstrated that formulated diets with 250 g kg−1 and 380 g kg−1 protein inclusion can sustain higher growth rates of juvenile H. rufescens than fresh algae. These differences seem to be due to the amount of dietary protein. Kelp meal appears to improve the consumption and digestibility of balanced diets, and its inclusion in formulated diets is recommended.  相似文献

A number of approaches have been utilized for growing bivalve hatchery seed (1 mm) to a size suitable for field planting (< 8 mm) but few have been directly compared. This study evaluated the growth and survival of northern quahog seed in three different culture systems and two different stocking densities. The three systems were: 1) a stacked-tray unit with downward water flow; 2) traditional upweller culture units with water flowing upward without seed bed expansion; and 3) upweller culture units with water flowing upward at fluidization velocities to provide seed bed expansion. The two stocking densities were 1.0 and 3.0 g whole wet weight clam/cm2 respectively. During each trial period the seed clams were fed a 1% daily ration (% dry weight algae per wet weight clam per day) of the cultured diatom Chaetoceros muelleri . After 14 d of culture at the 1.0 g whole wet weight/cm2 stocking density, seed clams (4.4 ± 0.6 mm initial shell length) under fluidized-flow condition exhibited better growth (0.54/d), and a greater final shell length (5.9 ± 1.0 mm). At the high density stocking conditions, after 28 d of culture, seed clams (4.2 ± 0.6 mm initial shell length) in the fluidized-flow culture conditions again exhibited better growth rate (0.031/d) and a greater final shell length (6.0 ± 1.0 mm). The preliminary evaluation of fluidized-flow for seed clam culture in land-based nurseries indicates its potential as a suitable alternative to raceway, downwelling, or traditional forced-flow culture methods.  相似文献

Abstract. The Chilean oyster, Ostrea chilensis Philippi, shows high phenotypic variability for growth rate within populations. In order to determine if the serial correlation of growth rate in oysters is positive, the correlation between shell height and live weight at different stages of the life cycle in a cohort of the Chilean oyster was estimated. Four size groups of individually tagged oysters selected on the basis of their shell heights were examined. The relationships for juvenile and adult oysters were found to be positively correlated throughout the study period. The correlation coefficients ranged from r = 0.28 to r = 0.83. For shell height the coefficient of determination for market size oysters was higher in 2-year-old (r2=0.88) than in 1-year-old oysters (r2=0.09). Shell height and live weight were more highly correlated at later stages of the life cycle. The results indicate that 2-year-old oysters have a size that is indicative of performance to market size and hence is an appropriate age to select the parents to be used in breeding programmes to improve the growth rate in O. chilensis . A high mortality was detected after the natural spawning period. A physiological stress hypothesis is proposed to explain the high summer mortality in O. chilensis in the Quempillen estuary, southern Chile.  相似文献
