Whole field peas were fed at 0, 10, 20, and 30% of DM to 139 yearling steers (British cross; 409 ± 31 kg of initial BW) for a 119-d finishing period. Carcass data and Choice grade strip loins (n = 98) were collected from a commercial abattoir in Lexington, Nebraska. Consumer sensory and Warner-Bratzler shear force analyses were performed on 2.5-cm strip steaks. No differences (P ≥ 0.17) were observed in final BW, ADG, DMI, and G:F of steers. Likewise, no differences (P ≥ 0.23) were observed for HCW, LM area, fat thickness at the 12th rib, yield grade, and marbling scores. However, KPH responded quadratically to increasing dietary amount of field peas (P = 0.02). Regarding the sensorial analysis, feeding peas linearly increased subjective tenderness (P < 0.01) and led to a quadratic response of overall like ratings (P = 0.01) and flavor like ratings (P = 0.12). Feeding peas did not alter (P ≥ 0.64) juiciness, but decreased shear force values linearly when quantities were increased (P = 0.02). These data suggest that feeding peas does not affect steer performance or carcass characteristics differently from dry-rolled corn, but does improve objective and subjective tenderness, overall desirability, and flavor of beef. Field peas could be fed to cattle and give positive attributes to the quality of the meat up to 30% inclusion in the diet.  相似文献

Groups of cattle, sheep and poultry were inoculated with a recombinant vaccinia virus expressing the haemagglutinin of the swine influenza virus A/NJ/11/76. No adverse clinical responses were recorded and none of the animals developed a viraemia when inoculated with the recombinant or wild-type vaccinia virus. Recombinant virus reisolated from lesions in cattle was stable, maintaining its thymidine kinase negative phenotype and ability to express the swine influenza haemagglutinin. Antibodies to the influenza haemagglutinin were detected in cattle, sheep and poultry inoculated with the recombinant virus. While no animals inoculated with wild-type virus developed these antibodies, there was no detectable spread of either recombinant or wild-type virus from the inoculation sites or to in-contact uninoculated animals. The results indicate that recombinant vaccinia viruses can induce immune responses in cattle, sheep and poultry demonstrating their potential as vaccine vectors in a variety of important veterinary species.  相似文献

Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were obtained from 13 bovine leukosis virus infected cattle and inoculated subcutaneously into 29 recipient adult steers to determine (a) the number of mononuclear cells (equivalent amount of blood) necessary to cause infection and (b) factors influencing infectivity of mononuclear cells from bovine leukosis virus-infected animals. A total of 55 inoculations were made. Inoculation of 1 X 10(4), 2 X 10(4) and 5 X 10(4) mononuclear cells caused seroconversion in 12%, 57% and 62% of steers, respectively. No infections occurred with 1 X 10(3) or 2 X 10(3) mononuclear cells. Cattle infected for longer than 24 months and those animals greater than three years of age were more likely to cause infection with 1 to 5 X 10(4) mononuclear cells than were cattle infected for less than 24 months or animals less than three years of age. Lymphocytes from cattle with persistent lymphocytosis caused more infections when 1 X 10(4) or 2 X 10(4) mononuclear cells were inoculated, than did lymphocytes from nonpersistent lymphocytosis cattle; however, both groups were equally infectious when 5 X 10(4) mononuclear cells were inoculated. No differences were found in infectivity of experimentally vs naturally exposed animals.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that feedlot cattle with acute interstitial pneumonia (AIP) have bacterial infection of the lung or liver and concurrent bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) infection significantly more often than pen mates without AIP ANIMALS: 39 feedlot cattle with signs consistent with AIP and no history of treatment with antimicrobials and 32 healthy control cattle from the same pens. PROCEDURES: Lung and liver specimens were obtained postmortem for bacterial or mycoplasmal culture and histologic examination; lung tissue was assessed for BRSV infection immunohistochemically. RESULTS: Among affected cattle, 26 had AIP confirmed histologically. Lung tissue from 11 cattle with AIP yielded microbial respiratory tract pathogens on culture; tissues from control animals yielded no microbial growth. In 4 cattle with AIP and 2 control animals, liver abscesses were detected; bacteria were isolated from abscessed tissue in 3 and 1 of those animals, respectively. Immunohistochemically, 9 cattle with AIP and no control animals were BRSV-positive. Histologically, 9 AIP-affected cattle had only acute alveolar damage with exudation, and the other 17 had acute exudation with type II pneumocyte hyperplasia. No lesions of AIP were detected in control animals. Only 4 AIP-affected cattle had bacterial infection of the lung with concurrent BRSV infection. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that microbial respiratory tract pathogens are more common in cattle with AIP than in healthy pen mates. Control of bacterial pneumonia late in the feeding period may reduce the incidence of AIP at feedlots where AIP is a problem.  相似文献

A serological survey was carried out in order to determine the prevalence of antirotavirus antibodies in Moroccan cattle under different management conditions. From the 493 serum samples examined, 325 (65.9%) were found positive, using a counter-immunoelectroosmophoresis technique. Animals of indigenous breed coming from farms with rapid turnover or large number of animals, or having frequent contacts with imported cattle, had a higher rate of seropositivity; however, positive sera were also found in cattle from small farms in remote areas, showing that rotavirus infection is ubiquitous in that country. No relationship was found between the prevalence of anti-rotavirus antibodies and the frequence of calf diarrhoea. The percentage of seropositive animals in a herd has to be considered as an epidemiological indicator.  相似文献

Detection of bovine virus diarrhoea virus (BVDV) in one vaccinated beef cattle and three non-vaccinated dairy herds was investigated on peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) with or without previous treatment followed by a capture ELISA (cELISA). Using the combination of PHA and polycation treatment, PBL from 229 seropositive cattle were studied and could be classified in four different states of BVDV infection. Lysed PBL from four animals were directly positive in cELISA (Category I), PBL of 17 animals were positive after PHA stimulation (Category II), 15 animals were positive only after PHA stimulation plus polycation treatment (Category III), while virus could not be detected in 193 seropositive cattle. Wild-type BVDV strains were isolated by co-culture on polycation-treated MDBK cells from 11 of these seropositive animals. BVDV antibodies of these same animals were able to neutralize their own virus, indicating that virus persists in PBL in spite of strain-specific antibodies. No apparent change of leukocyte subpopulations could be detected in any category of virus-positive animals. Thus, BVDV may be present in the PBL of some cattle, even in the presence of a specific active immune response.  相似文献

A total of 258 cattle clinically affected with Trichophyton verrucosum (ringworm) were treated twice by spraying with a suspension containing the fungicidal antibiotic natamycin. One-hundred-and-forty-seven in-contact, but unaffected cattle were also similarly treated. Forty-one of the affected animals were examined mycologically and clinically as they were taken to be representative of the whole group. At eight weeks after the last treatment 93 per cent of the affected animals had completely recovered and the remaining 7 per cent had improved markedly; 70 per cent of the mycologically examined animals proved negative at the same time. No reinfection of the recovered animals or spread of the disease to the treated in-contact animals was seen up to six months after treatment.  相似文献

When a solution of xylitol was rapidly administered intravenously (bolus infusion) to healthy cattle or those with ketosis, different results were obtained. In healthy cattle, a temporary surge in insulin secretion was observed, whereas in ketotic cattle no such surge was found, but instead a moderate level of secretion continued for a lengthy period. No significant difference in the areas under the insulin curve (AUC) was found between healthy cattle and ketotic cattle up to 120 min after xylitol infusion. These results clearly demonstrated that a bolus infusion of xylitol solution in ketotic cattle does not cause a temporary surge in insulin secretion unlike in healthy animals, but rather results in a continuous, gradual rise in secretion.  相似文献

Contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), caused by Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides SC (MmmSC), is one of the most important diseases of cattle in Sub-Saharan Africa. The live T1/44 vaccine is normally used for its control but produces only transient protection and gives rise to adverse reactions. The present study evaluated the efficacy of danofloxacin (2.5% Advocintrade mark, Pfizer Ltd.) for the treatment of naturally infected cattle and in the prevention of CBPP transmission to in-contact cattle. Adult cattle, taken from a natural outbreak, were placed into two groups of 10 animals and kept on a research farm in paddocks 50m apart. One group was treated with 2.5mg/kg danofloxacin on days 0, 1 and 2; the other group were saline treated. On day 2, 10 CBPP-free, seronegative cattle were placed in contact with each of the two groups. All cattle were monitored for 3.5 months. No differences were seen in clinical improvement of the CBPP-affected cattle treated with danofloxacin compared with the untreated CBPP-affected cattle with approximately half of each group being withdrawn because of CBPP or showing CBPP lesions at post mortem examination. Clinical scores of the two groups were also similar. However cattle kept in contact with the danofloxacin-treated CBPP-affected animals showed significantly fewer lesions, less mortality and fewer animals were seropositive (P<0.02) and had reduced clinical scores (P<0.001) compared to cattle kept in contact with untreated CBPP-affected cattle. MmmSC was also isolated from fewer contact controls kept with the treated group. These findings could have important implications for the control of CBPP in Africa.  相似文献

R51703, a substance with 5-hydroxytryptamine type 2 receptor antagonist properties, was studied to assess its potential as a sedative in cattle. Six cattle in the study group were given R51703 intramuscularly at a dose rate of 0.15 mg/kg. Sedation became obvious between 10 and 15 minutes postinjection in five of these animals and lasted for approximately 120 minutes. No significant changes (P less than or equal to 0.05) were observed in respiratory rate, arterial blood gas, acid-base values or systemic arterial blood pressure. Heart rate was significantly elevated at 40, 60, 90 and 120 minutes posttreatment, but dysrhythmias were not detected. Rumen motility, as judged by the contraction rate, was decreased but not to significant levels. All animals ate normally at the end of the study period. The results indicated that R51703 may have a role in the management of domestic cattle and that further work is indicated to assess its potential in this area.  相似文献

An antigen capture ELISA, using a murine monoclonal antibody recognising recombinant hypodermin C (rHyC), was used to evaluate the influence of early treatment with eprinomectin (Eprinex) or fenthion (Spotton) on the kinetics of circulating hypodermin C in calves naturally infested with Hypoderma lineatum. No viable larvae were collected from treated animals, whereas a variable number of warbles were found in control animals. Treatment provoked a decrease in circulating HyC levels that was significant 9 days post-treatment (p.t.). Circulating antigen levels in the treated cattle remained detectable for approximately 99 days p.t. In contrast, control animals had no detectable antigen at 64 days p.t., 42 days earlier than in the treated animals. These results suggest that larvae were either gradually killed, resulting in slow release of antigen or they were encapsulated, leading to the slow liberation of antigen. Kinetics of circulating HyC did not differ among the two insecticide treatments. Antibodies persisted, in all groups, throughout the 120-day study. These results suggest that the antigen capture ELISA will be useful as a technique for detecting successful treatment of cattle grub infestations and for the detection of new infestations in previously infested cattle.  相似文献

The occurrence of cysticercosis due to Taenia saginata in cattle slaughtered for meat in Amhara National Regional State, northwestern Ethiopia between September 2005 and February 2007 was investigated. Routine meat inspection of various organs of 4456 cattle in eight abattoirs of this region showed that 824 (18.49%) were infected with Cysticercus bovis. The occurrence rate did not vary significantly from abattoir to abattoir (P>0.5). The tongue, masseter muscles, heart muscles, triceps muscles and thigh muscles were the main predilection sites of the cysts. Of 4102 male cattle, examined, 768 (18.72%) had cysts of C. bovis while 56 (15.82%) of the 354 female animals investigated were infected. The animals slaughtered were all adults. No significant difference in occurrence was recorded between the sexes. Monthly occurrence of the cysts in the animals revealed a rise of infected animals during the dry season.  相似文献

选用3头体重相近的安装有永久性瘤胃瘘管的科尔沁肉牛,采用尼龙袋法测定玉米面、压片玉米、啤酒糟、玉米酒糟、蚕豆和豌豆壳6种饲料原料在肉牛瘤胃内干物质(DM)、粗蛋白(CP)、淀粉的瘤胃降解率。结果显示:6种饲料原料的DM、CP的肉牛瘤胃有效降解率,压片玉米与玉米面显著高于蚕豆、豌豆壳、玉米酒糟和啤酒糟(P<0.05),压片玉米与玉米面差异不显著(P>0.05);淀粉的肉牛瘤胃有效降解率大小顺序依次为蚕豆、压片玉米、玉米面、豌豆壳、玉米酒糟和啤酒糟。试验表明,蚕豆和压片玉米、玉米面的瘤胃降解率较高,玉米酒糟与豌豆壳居中,啤酒糟相对较差。  相似文献

布鲁菌病是一种以母畜流产、暂时或永久性不育、产奶量下降为主要特征的一种人畜共患传染病,严重危害畜牧业发展和人类健康。为了掌握江西省宜春市某肉牛场布鲁菌病感染情况,以便做好布鲁菌病的预防、控制和净化工作,采用虎红平板凝集试验和试管凝集试验,对该规模化肉牛养殖场的300余头肉牛进行随机抽检。结果显示,随机抽检的60头肉牛样品中,布鲁菌病感染率为0,表明该牛场的布鲁菌病防控措施有效。  相似文献

Nine sporadic cases of apparent toxic epidermal necrolysis in nine cattle herds in Israel are presented. The clinical symptoms were characterized by full-thickness epidermal exfoliation. No underlying disease or drug administration could be detected in the affected animals, and so all cases were classified as idiopathic. Recovery was noted in all affected animals. The clinical and histological findings are discussed in the light of the pertinent literature.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine susceptibility of cattle to infection with Ehrlichia equi and the agent of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE). DESIGN: Experimental disease and prevalence survey. ANIMALS: 6 cattle, 2 horses, and 2,725 serum samples from healthy cattle. PROCEDURE: 2 cattle and 1 horse were inoculated with E equi, 2 cattle and 1 horse were inoculated with the HGE agent, and 2 cattle served as sham-inoculated controls; inoculated animals were evaluated via clinical, hematologic, serologic, and real-time polymerase chain reaction tests. Prevalence of antibodies against E equi in 2,725 healthy cattle was determined by use of an indirect immunofluorescent technique. RESULTS: No abnormal clinical or hematologic findings or inclusion bodies within granulocytes were observed in the cattle after inoculation, and results of all polymerase chain reaction tests were negative. Seroconversion in inoculated cattle developed 10 to 12 days after inoculation (reciprocal titers, 160). Both horses developed clinical signs of ehrlichiosis. Five of 2,725 (0.18%) cattle were seropositive for E equi, with titers ranging from 20 to 80. All seropositive cattle originated from the same tick-rich region in the Sierra Nevada foothills. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that cattle are not susceptible to infection with E equi or the agent of HGE and that prevalence of exposure to E equi in healthy cattle is low. Therefore, E equi and the agent of HGE are likely of negligible importance for cattle in North America.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to develop a technique for biopsy of the kidneys of cattle and to evaluate its usefulness and safety based on 25 consecutive biopsies. Using a handheld 14G spinal biopsy needle, the right kidney was biopsied under ultrasound control by one operator. To assess the immediate effects of renal biopsy, twenty cattle were necropsied shortly after the procedure and examined. The remaining five animals were biopsied and examined daily for nine days and then necropsied. One pass was made for biopsy of the right kidney. No immediate or delayed macroscopic hematuria was observed post-biopsy. Six animals had a thin subcapsular hematoma (less than 2 cm in diameter). We conclude that percutaneous ultrasound-guided biopsy of the right kidney is safe, fast, cost-effective and practical as long as it is performed properly.  相似文献
