Fourteen fall-born lambs were used to determine the effects of diet before and after weaning on intake, growth, serum hormones, and metabolite profiles. Before weaning, lambs were intensively sampled for 6 h at 35 and 42 d of age. Before sample collection, lambs were allowed to suckle, and milk intake was recorded. At 42 d of age, lambs were weaned and randomly allotted to ad libitum access to either alfalfa or grass hay. Blood samples were collected at 49 and 56 d of age for 6 h. Milk intake did not differ (P greater than .10) between groups. After weaning, lambs fed alfalfa hay consumed more (P less than .05) hay and had greater (P less than .05) ADG than lambs fed grass hay. Postweaning diet had no effect (P greater than .10) on serum insulin, growth hormone (GH), insulin:GH ratio, prolactin, cortisol, glucose, or nonesterified fatty acids (NE-FA) concentrations. Lambs consuming alfalfa had higher (P less than .05) serum urea nitrogen (SUN) at 49 and 56 d of age than lambs consuming grass. At 35 and 42 d of age, (P less than .05) serum insulin and insulin:GH ratio were higher (P less than .05) after milk intake than at 49 and 56 d of age after hay intake. In studies of behavior and nutrition, we typically determine nutritional needs and formulate diets for the average member of the herd, not for specific individuals within a herd. Nevertheless, variation among individuals could affect productivity of the group if the diet diverges too much from what individuals at the extremes prefer to eat. Thus, it is important to determine the degree to which individuals within a group vary in their food preferences when offered alternatives. Our first objective was to determine the degree to which lambs differed in preference for foods high in energy (barley) or protein (alfalfa) (Exp. 1). When we offered lambs barley and alfalfa for ad libitum consumption for 25 d, individuals varied in the amounts of barley (range: 221 to 991 g/d) and alfalfa (range: 51 to 558 g/d) they consumed (P < .0001). At one extreme, individuals preferred a diet of 6% alfalfa and 94% barley; at the other extreme, individuals preferred a diet of 70% alfalfa and 30% barley. Our second objective was to determine whether lambs from Exp. 1 compensated, when fed a basal diet that was lower in alfalfa than they preferred, by ingesting foods higher in alfalfa when offered a meal (Exp. 2). Lambs were ranked according to the percentage of alfalfa (range from 6 to 70%) and barley (range from 94 to 30%) they ate during Exp. 1 and then assigned alternately to two treatments: 1) basal diet with similar proportions of alfalfa and barley consumed ad libitum (preferred diet) or 2) basal diet with 10% less alfalfa than consumed ad libitum (low-alfalfa diet). We then conducted three trials in which lambs fed the different basal diets were offered a meal for 15 min/d for 2 d of two foods that differed in barley and alfalfa. During Trial 1, when we offered barley and alfalfa, lambs in both groups preferred barley (138 g) to alfalfa (46 g) (P < .05). During Trial 2, when the test foods (barley and alfalfa) were diluted with grape pomace (20%), lambs fed the preferred basal diet ate more barley (116 vs 64 g) and less alfalfa (48 vs 87 g) than lambs fed the low-alfalfa basal diet (P < .05). During Trial 3, when we offered a food high in barley (80% barley and 20% pomace) and a food high in alfalfa (70% alfalfa, 14% cornstarch, and 16% pomace), lambs fed the preferred basal diet ate more of the high-barley food (124 vs 73 g) and less of the high-alfalfa food (45 vs 98 g) than lambs fed the low-alfalfa basal diet (P < .05). Collectively, these results illustrate that lambs varied greatly in their preferences for foods that differ in energy (barley) and protein (alfalfa), and that when their preferred basal diet was altered, lambs compensated by ingesting food that complemented their basal diet during a daily meal. The addition of grape pomace in Trials 2 and 3 reduced the protein content of the high-barley and high-alfalfa foods such that the high-barley food was only marginally adequate to meet needs compared with the high-alfalfa food. 为了探究科尔沁沙地苜蓿种植过程中,肥料对苜蓿茎秆长度和茎秆直径影响,试验通过设置不同施肥量与施肥频率,论述了苜蓿茎秆直径与茎秆长度的变化规律,进而反映出苜蓿的生长状况,为紫花苜蓿施肥提供了理论基础。结果表明,增加施肥量能够促进第一茬紫花苜蓿茎秆的伸长生长,当施肥量过高时会抑制其生长;第二茬苜蓿在施肥量为50~70 kg/667 m2时,增加施肥频率对茎秆长度无明显影响;3茬苜蓿茎秆长度平均值大小为第二茬〉第一茬〉第三茬,茎秆直径平均值为第一茬〉第二茬〉第三茬,茎秆长粗比的平均值分别为186.68、291.70、298.80;3茬苜蓿茎秆直径的波动范围分别为2.92~3.99 mm、2.47~3.13 mm、1.52~2.28 mm;紫花苜蓿茎秆直径与茎秆长度之间存在显著线性相关。  相似文献

In two separate 2 x 2 factorial arrangements, 69 male, crossbred lambs were allotted randomly to the following treatments: 1) nonimplanted (NI) rams, 2) implanted (I) rams, 3) NI wethers, and 4) I wethers. In Trial 1, 36 lambs were allotted to treatment groups at birth (n = 9) and I lambs were implanted with 12 mg of zeranol between 1 and 3 d of age and again at weaning (average age of 62 d). Lambs were slaughtered at three time-constant end points of 78, 93, and 107 d on feed postweaning (average age of 155 d). Rams grew faster postweaning, were more efficient in their feed conversion, were heavier at slaughter, and had lower numerical yield grades than did wethers (P less than .05). Implanted lambs tended (P = .08) to grow faster and were (P less than .05) more efficient in their feed conversion than NI lambs. Rams produced heavier (P less than .05) trimmed subprimal shoulders, loins, and legs and had (P less than .05) a higher percentage of their carcass weight in the subprimal shoulder than did wethers. During Trial 2, NI rams (n = 8), I rams (n = 8), NI wethers (n = 8), and I wethers (n = 9) were allotted to treatment groups, and I lambs were implanted at average ages of 14, 55, and 98 d. We hypothesized that lambs discriminate between postingestive effects of energy and protein and associate those effects with a food's flavor to modify food choices. Based on this hypothesis, we predicted that 1) lambs would acquire a preference for a poorly nutritious food (grape pomace) eaten during intraruminal infusions of energy (starch) or protein (casein) and that 2) shortly after an intraruminal infusion of energy or protein (preload), lambs would decrease their preferences for foods previously conditioned with starch or casein, respectively. Thirty lambs were allotted to three groups and conditioned as follows. On d 1, lambs in each group received grape pomace containing a different flavor and water was infused into their rumens as they ate the pomace. On d 2, the flavors were switched so each group received a new flavor and a suspension of starch (10% of the DE required per day) replaced the water infusion. On d 3, the flavors were switched again, and a suspension of casein (2.7 to 5.4% of the CP required per day) replaced the starch infusion. Conditioning was repeated during four consecutive trials. Lambs in Trial 1 had a basal diet of alfalfa pellets (e.g., free access from 1200 to 1700) and 400 g of rolled barley. Lambs in Trials 2, 3, and 4 received a restricted amount of alfalfa pellets (990 g/d) as their basal diet. After conditioning, all animals received an infusion of water, and, 30 min later, they were offered a choice of the three flavors previously paired with water, starch, or casein. On the ensuing days, the choice was repeated, but starch, casein, and barley replaced the water preload. The nutrient density of the infused preloads was increased during consecutive trials. Lambs preferred the flavors paired with starch > water > casein during Trial 1 (P < .05) and the flavors paired with starch > casein > water during Trials 2 (P < .05), 3 (P < .001), and 4 (P < .001). Preloads of casein decreased preferences for flavors previously paired with casein (P < .10 [Trial 2]; P < .001 [Trial 3], and increased preferences for flavors paired with starch (P < .05 [Trial 2]; P < .001 [Trial 3]). Preloads of energy (barley) had the opposite effect (P < .05 [Trial 3]). These results indicate that lambs discriminated between the postingestive effects of starch and casein and associated the effects with specific external cues (i.e., added flavors) to regulate macronutrient ingestion.  相似文献

A terminal sire Composite population was formed by mating Columbia rams to Hampshire-Suffolk crossbred ewes. Subsequent generations were produced by inter se mating. The objective was to compare Composite sheep to purebred Suffolks for numerous performance traits. Young ewes lambing at 1 yr of age were evaluated separately from mature ewes (2, 3, 4, and 5 yr old) of each population. Composite and Suffolk populations did not differ significantly in components of litter weaning weight per young ewe joined. Mature Composite ewes produced more wool than Suffolk ewes. Fertility of mature ewes did not differ significantly between populations. The greater prolificacy (P less than .01) of mature Suffolk ewes was offset by a lower survival to weaning (P less than .01), particularly for twin-born lambs. Consequently, mature Composite and Suffolk ewes did not differ for number weaned and litter weaning weight per ewe joined. The average birth weight of lambs born to young and mature Composite ewes was greater (P less than .02) than the average birth weight of Suffolk lambs. The average weaning weight of lambs born to young Composite ewes was greater (P less than .05) than that of lambs born to young Suffolk ewes. Breed differences were not detected for preweaning daily gains, weaning weights, and postweaning daily gains of ewe lambs born to mature ewes. The 4 yr productivity of 25% (QF; n = 533) and 50% (HF; n = 531) Finnsheep ewes exposed to either Suffolk or Columbia rams in one of three production systems was monitored to test the effects of system, terminal sire breed, maternal line, and their interactions on annual market lamb production. Ewe lambs and yearlings were randomly assigned to either a high-input accelerated lambing system (HIGH), a high-input annual system (MED), or a low-input annual system (LOW). Nursery facilities were available for weak lambs or those born in triplet or more births for the HIGH and MED but not for the LOW systems. Accelerated lambing protocol required early weaning. Sex-adjusted lamb weaning weights were corrected to within-system mean ages of 42 d for HIGH and 70 d for MED and LOW. The HIGH ewes weaned 1.55 lambs per year compared with 1.46 for MED and 1.18 for LOW (P less than .01). However, because of early weaning, HIGH yielded the lowest weight of weaned lamb per year. The MED ewes weaned 5.9 and 11.1 more kilograms of lamb per year than the LOW and HIGH ewes, respectively (P less than .01). The HIGH system may be economically feasible if young lambs could be inexpensively grown to feeder or market lamb weight. The HIGH ewes did not, however, increase lamb numbers in proportion to increased exposures compared with the annual systems. Breed-group effects for ewe productivity (kilogram of lamb weaned per ewe per year) were consistent across management systems, although some interactions among breed group and system were present for components of productivity. Suffolk rams yielded an advantage of 1.6 kg of weaned lamb per exposure over Columbia rams (P less than .05) due to a 3% better lamb survival (P less than .01) and heavier weaning weight, especially in the LOW system. The HF ewes weaned .1 more lambs per exposure than QF ewes (P less than .01); .06 of the lambs were nursery-reared. However, lambs from HF ewes had a 2% lower survival rate (P less than .05) and were 1.4 kg lighter at weaning (P less than .01), so overall productivity among HF and QF ewes was similar.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare reproductive efficiency and wool production of 1/4 Finn crossbred ewes with straightbred Columbia, Rambouillet and Targhee ewes. In Phase I, white-faces ewes (WF; Columbia, Rambouillet and Targhee) were bred to either rams of their own breed or Finnish Landrace X Rambouillet rams (F X R) to produce 821 lambs from 563 lambings. Ewes bred to F X R had similar average litter size and individual lamb weights at birth, 60 d and weaning as those bred to WF. Lambs sired by F X R had 7% higher (P less than .01) lamb weaned per ewe lambing for ewes bred to F X R rams. For Phase II, approximately equal numbers of F X R-sired (1/4Fx) and WF-sired female lambs produced in Phase I each year were exposed to Suffolk rams at yearly intervals beginning at 7 mo of age. At 1 yr of age, 1/4Fx had higher fertility (P less than .01) than WF (37.7% vs 1.3%), resulting in 14.0 kg more lamb weaned per ewe exposed to breeding. Mature (ages 2 to 6 yr) 1/4Fx ewes had similar fertility to mature WF ewes, but litter size, number of lambs at 60 d and weaning was .36, .24 and .22 lambs higher (P less than .01), respectively, for mature 1/4Fx. Progeny of 1/4Fx were lighter at birth (P less than .01), but not different (P greater than .05) at 60 d and weaning than those of WF. Sixteen Debouillet wether lambs (approximately 3 mo old) were placed indoors in 1.5- x 3-m pens (14 h light:10 h dark) 28 d after weaning. Lambs received no implant or a 12-mg zeranol implant on d-2 (eight lambs/group). Two days later (d 0), animals received either 0 or 2.5 mg ovine growth hormone (oGH, eight lambs/group) s.c. on alternate days for 42 d. Animals had ad libitum access to water, salt, mineral and a pelleted alfalfa diet (16% CP). After 42 d, lambs were slaughtered to evaluate carcass traits, organ weights and femur characteristics. Zeranol by oGH interactions were not detected (P greater than .20). Zeranol increased (P less than .05) BW, improved (P less than .05) feed:gain during the first 20 d and increased (P less than .10) feed intake during the last 22 d of the 42-d trial compared with controls. Carcass characteristics were not altered (P greater than .10) by 12 mg zeranol. Serum insulin and prolactin were elevated (P less than .05), but serum GH was not influenced by zeranol compared with controls. Exogenous oGH decreased feed intake (P less than .10) and improved feed:gain (P less than .05) during the initial 20 d compared with controls, but did not influence (P greater than .20) these variables during the last 22 d of the study. Carcass traits were not influenced (P greater than .10) by oGH. In two experiments, a total of 46 Finn Cross and Dorset lambs were artificially group-reared. Thirty eight were weaned abruptly at 14 d of age from a commercial milk replacer (MR) to a dry starter diet (SD). Lambs were self-fed cool (10 to 15 C) MR reconstituted to 25% dry matter (DM). The ground (2-mm screen) SD averaged 26.2% crude protein and 7.4% fat (DM basis). For both experiments, birth and weaning weights averaged 3.8 and 8.0 kg, respectively. Experiment 1 tested a strategy for encouraging postweaning DM intake. Fifteen lambs received MR reconstituted to 33% DM from d 11 to 14, and 15 lambs received standard 25% DM MR. Between d 14 and 15, intakes of DM, gross energy, crude protein and water dropped 86, 89, 85 and 64%, respectively. Lambs doubled their birth weights during the milk-feeding period and consumed 1.41 kg SD between d 14 and 25. The MR reconstitution rate did not affect weaning weight, postweaning SD or water intake, or growth check (GC, P greater than .10). Postweaning GC averaged 12.2 d and was not influenced (P greater than .10) by birth weight, sex or weaning weight. Mortality and disease rates under these conditions were negligible. Experiment 2 was designed to differentiate between the dual effects at weaning of altering the type of diet and of reducing the level of nutrient intake. Eight lambs were weaned to SD at 14 d, and eight lambs were bottle-fed isocaloric levels of MR from d 12 to 30. At weaning, plasma glucose concentration declined 1.4 mM from 6.7 mM due to fasting and an additional 1.0 mM due to the change of the type of diet (P less than .01). Plasma acetate and urea N concentrations rose steadily after d 16 in the SD-weaned lambs, but not in the MR-fed lambs (P less than .01), suggesting that the SD-weaned lambs absorbed ruminal fermentation products. These results indicate that artificially reared lambs may be routinely weaned to a dry diet at 14 d of age. The major alterations in plasma metabolites that occur within 6 to 8 d after abrupt weaning may define the period when these lambs become functional ruminants.  相似文献

An in vitro experiment was conducted to assess the microbial activity of faeces from unweaned and weaned piglets. Diets of weaned piglets were supplemented with various fructans. Weaned piglets received a corn–soy based basal diet supplemented with either corn starch (control; CON), oligofructose (OF), chicory root (CHR), a mixture of chicory pulp and oligofructose (MIX; 60:40) or corn starch and antibiotic (CONAB). Faecal inocula collected from unweaned (5 kg body weight (BW)) and weaned piglets (15 kg BW) were introduced in airtight 100-mL bottles containing 0.5 g of substrate (basal or mix) in pre-warmed buffered medium. The organic matter cumulative volume (OMCV) was measured for 48 h, and a mono-phasic model was fitted to the data. The concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and ammonia (NH3) was determined after fermentation. Incubation of substrate mix with the different inocula gave a significant higher OMCV compared to substrate basal, except for the inoculum from piglets of the CONAB group. In addition, substrate mix gave a higher Rmax and a lower Tmax compared to substrate basal. With the exception of inoculum obtained from chicory root supplemented animals (CHR) no substrate effects were observed in fermentation end-products (VFA and NH3). However, the proportions of acetic acid were significantly higher and those of butyric acid lower when inocula were incubated with substrate mix. Inocula from weaned pigs tended to show higher proportions of propionic acid when incubated with substrate mix, whilst inocula from unweaned piglets showed the opposite. The differences in fermentation kinetics between substrates after incubation with inocula from weaned and unweaned piglets in combination with an altered composition in VFA, points to a modified faecal microflora following weaning.  相似文献

Our objective was to evaluate differences in lactation traits and calf weights produced by F1 cows under varying daily metabolizable energy availability. Measures of milk yields and calf weight traits were recorded on mature F1 cows. The cows were produced from matings of Angus or Hereford dams with sires representing Angus/Hereford, Shorthorn, Galloway, Longhorn, Nellore, and Salers breeds. The cows' daily DM intakes of a diet composed of a corn silage or alfalfa silage plus corn silage were recorded from approximately 2 wk postpartum until the calves were weaned at an average age of 170 d. Milk yield measurements were recorded when the calves were approximately 14, 28, 56, 84, 112, 140, and 168 d of age. Sources of variation considered for the traits of interest included sire breed of the cow (SBC) and the covariates weaning age of the calf and daily metabolizable energy intake (DMEI) of the cow for lactation and calf weights. The linear and quadratic effects were evaluated for DMEI. The SBC x DMEI (linear) interaction was significant for total milk yield. Sire breed of cow differences (P < .05) were observed for milk yield at time of peak yield, persistency, preweaning ADG, and weaning weight. Salers- and Shorthorn-sired cows had greater (P < .05) peak yield than Galloway, Longhorn, or Nellore cross-bred cows but were not significantly different from the Hereford/Angus. Increasing DMEI linearly increased peak yield and total yield (P < .05). Preweaning ADG of calves from Nellore-sired cows was greater (P < .05) than all SBC. Preweaning ADG of calves from Galloway-sired cows was less than all SBC (P < .05). The linear effect of DMEI was heterogeneous across SBC for total yield. The pooled quadratic effect of DMEI was significant for all traits except birth weight. The DMEI for expression of maximum weaning weight was estimated to be 29 Mcal. Feed efficiency ratios for the test period were 28, 27, 30, 25, 28, 32, and 30 g calf weight:Mcal DMEI for reference and 1980s Angus/Hereford-, Shorthorn-, Galloway-, Longhorn-, Nellore-, and Salers-sired cows, respectively, at the DMEI level of 29 Mcal.  相似文献

A study was conducted to evaluate effects of age at weaning in combination with different weaning procedures on 2 breeds of lambs (Merinoland, Rhoenschaf). Lambs were either weaned at 8 or 16 wk of age in 2 stages or with the traditional method of weaning by abrupt separation. In the 2-stage treatment, lambs were prevented from nursing their dam for 1 wk (stage 1) before their separation (stage 2). Control animals were nursed by their dams until they were separated. Lamb BW and behavior (vocalization, agitation) were recorded before and after separation. After separation, lambs weaned at 8 wk of age had greater (P = 0.004) ADG compared with lambs weaned at 16 wk of age. Control lambs had greater (P < 0.001) agitation scores [1 = no agitation (normal behavior; i.e., feeding, resting, lying, standing, or play behavior) to 3 = high agitation (continuously moving, restlessness, or vocalization)] irrespective of weaning age and breed. On the day of separation, 2-stage lambs had scores from 1.17 to 1.35, whereas control lambs were scored from 1.70 to 1.79. After separation, lambs weaned in 2 stages vocalized up to 98.2% less (P = 0.001) than control animals. Furthermore, bleats were greater for Rhoenschaf lambs and at a weaning age of 8 wk (P < 0.05). Differences between treatments were greatest on the day of separation. Vocalization decreased continuously within the first 3 d of weaning to zero. Lambs weaned in 2 stages were less distressed than lambs weaned by the traditional method of abrupt separation based on behavioral data, but ADG until 12 and 16 wk of age did not differ (P > 0.05) for either treatment in this study.  相似文献

In Exp. 1, 72 Targhee lambs (initial BW 22.1+/-.3 kg) were used to determine the effects of energy source (alfalfa pasture vs limit-fed, all-concentrate) and ionophore addition on performance, visceral organ mass, and carcass characteristics. There were no differences (P > . 10) in ADG or gain/ feed due to ionophore supplementation. Lambs that grazed alfalfa had greater (P < .05) liver, omasum, abomasum, small intestine, cecum, and large intestine weights than did lambs fed the concentrate diet. Lambs fed the concentrate diet had greater (P < .01) hot carcass weights, larger (P < .01) loin eye areas, and greater (P < .001) dressing percentages than lambs that grazed alfalfa. In Exp. 2, lambs offered the concentrate diet had greater (P < .001) DM and OM digestibilities than lambs offered alfalfa (89.5 and 91.1 vs 72.4 and 74.2%, respectively). Apparent and true N digestibilities were greater (P < .001) for the concentrate diet than for alfalfa (90.9 and 101.7 vs 77.7 and 91.9%, respectively). Likewise, grams of N retained per day were twice as great (P < .001) with the concentrate diet than with alfalfa (14.9 vs 6.0 g/ d). The greater visceral organ mass and resulting increases in energy and protein requirements in lambs that grazed alfalfa were probably responsible for the lesser hot carcass weight and dressing percentage compared with lambs fed 100% concentrate.  相似文献

Postweaning growth lag in baby pigs weaned at 28 d was studied by using three weaning stress treatments. Treatments consisted of a control in which pigs continued to nurse the dam, had access to a dry feed at 14 d of age and were not weaned until after the study. Pigs were adjusted to liquid and dry feeds at 14 d of age in Treatments 2 and 3, but sows were removed from the pens at 28 d of age in Treatment 2, whereas sows were removed and room temperature lowered to 13 degrees C in Treatment 3. In Treatment 4, sows were removed but pigs were fed the dry diet only from 28 d of age. Blood and tissue were collected and evaluated every 12 h for 48 h on slaughtered pigs and blood was sampled every 12 h for 132 h from pigs catheterized in the vena cava. Pigs weaned with a dry diet in Treatment 4 were the only pigs to lose weight (P less than .01) and have typical symptoms of postweaning growth lag. These pigs had the lowest (P less than .01) mean plasma glucose, highest (P less than .01) free fatty acids and the highest (P less than .05) cortisol concentrations. Their mean duodenal pH also was higher (P less than .01), whereas pigs given both milk and dry diets and stressed by weaning in a warm or cool room (Treatments 2 and 3) had lower (P less than .01) duodenal pH values than pigs continuing to nurse the sow. In this study, pigs having access to milk and dry diets prior to weaning had no adverse symptoms when the sow was removed regardless of whether or not they were exposed to cold after weaning. A study using the prematurely weaned rat as a model for the pig was undertaken to determine the effect of dietary cholesterol and carbohydrate source on small intestinal structure and function. Duodenal and jejunal samples were obtained at 18, 24, and 30 d of age from rats weaned at 15 d of age and from unweaned rats at 15, 18, 24, and 30 d of age. Four 20% CP diets were formulated: two diets used lactose and glucose as the carbohydrate source and two used sucrose and starch as the carbohydrate source; 1% cholesterol was substituted for either glucose or starch in one of each diet type. The unweaned rats consistently gained weight at a faster rate (P less than .01), had greater concentrations of Alcian blue (AB+) and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS+) goblet cells (P less than .03), and had more favorable villus height than did the weaned rats. The animals fed cholesterol tended to gain more weight, had more AB+ and PAS+ goblet cells (P less than .03), and had longer villi than did those not fed cholesterol. Lactase activities tended to be greater in the unweaned rats. Sucrase activities were greater in the weaned rats at 18 d (P less than .02). The data indicate that the addition of cholesterol to weaning diets is beneficial in maintaining small intestinal integrity.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to investigate whether Cu, alone or in combination with Mo, reduces the Se status of sheep. Thirty-six Hampshire ewes were separated prior to mating into four treatment groups of nine sheep each. The four groups consisted of 1) basal (alfalfa hay or legume-grass low-moisture silage, corn, oats), 2) basal plus 10 mg Cu/kg diet, 3) basal plus 10 mg Mo/kg and 4) basal plus Cu and Mo (each 10 mg/kg). Copper and Mo were added to both ewe and lamb diets. Treatments continued until lambs were weaned at 10 wk postpartum. The basal ewe diet contained, in mg/kg, 5.6 Cu, .05 Se and 1.0 Mo. The basal lamb diet contained, in mg/kg, 6.1 Cu, .07 Se and less than 1.0 Mo. Sulfur concentrations in the ewe and lamb diets were .24% and .20%, respectively. Copper supplements increased, and Mo supplements decreased, the concentration of Cu in the livers of ewes and lambs (P less than .05). Despite this, there were no effects of treatment on Se concentration or glutathione peroxidase activity in blood or tissues. Selenium levels in plasma of all ewes declined throughout pregnancy and lactation, indicating that .05 mg/kg Se was insufficient for the maintenance of Se status during pregnancy in Hampshire ewes. An acute stress response can be provoked by abrupt social, nutritional, and environmental changes associated with weaning, and this may disrupt homeostasis and thus compromise well-being. Manipulating environmental factors, such as photoperiod, might provide a simple way to reduce the physiological consequences that piglets experience due to weaning stress. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impacts of photoperiod manipulation across various weaning ages on leukocyte populations, lymphocyte proliferation, natural killer cytotoxicity (NK), chemotaxis, phagocytosis, and immunoglobulin G, cortisol, and BW of piglets during the nursery phase. Sixty-eight crossbred piglets were obtained from sows kept on a short-day (8 h of light/d) photoperiod from d 90 of gestation until weaning. Piglets were weaned at 14, 21, or 28 d of age and kept on a short or long (16 h of light/d) photoperiod until 10 wk of age. Piglet BW and blood samples were collected at weaning and at 6, 8, and 10 wk of age. Pigs weaned at 28 d had reduced neutrophil counts (P < 0.001), phagocytosis (P < 0.001), and lymphocyte proliferation (P < 0.05) at weaning compared with those weaned at 14 and 21 d. Pigs weaned at 21 d tended to have lower (P = 0.08) lymphocyte counts than did pigs weaned at 14 or 28 d. Pigs weaned at 14 d had reduced (P < 0.01) NK relative to those weaned at 21 or 28 d. Photoperiod also influenced pig BW and immune status. Generally, those pigs on the long-day photoperiod and weaned at 28 d were heavier (P < 0.001) than their counterparts weaned at 14 or 21 d. At 6 wk of age, NK was greater (P = 0.002) in pigs kept on a long day and weaned at 14 or 21 d than in pigs weaned at 28 d. Phagocytosis was less (P = 0.005) at 6 wk of age, but was greater at 8 wk, in piglets kept on the long day and weaned at 28 d than in long-day pigs weaned at 14 or 21 d. These results suggest that photoperiod differentially influences immune responses in piglets weaned at different ages and indicate an inverse relationship between growth and immune status. Here, weaning at 28 d and a long-day photoperiod was the treatment combination that was most physiologically beneficial to piglets, whereas a 14-d weaning and short-day photoperiod was least physiologically beneficial.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to measure the net absorption of fluid, sodium, potassium and chloride in the small intestine of weaned pigs and of their unweaned littermates and to correlate these values with villus height and crypt depth. Five pairs of segments of the small intestine were prepared in each of 80 pigs; the cranial segment of each pair was injected with an enterotoxigenic strain of Escherichia coli and the caudal segment with a control solution. Net absorption was measured on the day of weaning and four, seven, 11 and 14 days after weaning. In unweaned pigs the net absorption of fluid, potassium and chloride did not vary with time. In weaned pigs the net absorption of fluid in the control segments was significantly less on days 4, 7 and 14 after weaning and of sodium and chloride on days 4 and 7 than in unweaned littermates. In infected segments of weaned pigs the net absorption of fluid was significantly less than in unweaned littermates on day 11 and 14, of sodium and potassium on day 11 and of chloride on days 4 and 11 after weaning. Net absorption was negatively correlated with villus height but only in the infected segments of weaned pigs; no other correlations were found. It was concluded that after weaning the net absorption of fluid and electrolytes in the small intestine of pigs is temporarily decreased, a condition that may initiate diarrhoea.  相似文献

本试验旨在研究包膜丁酸钠(CSB)对脂多糖(LPS)刺激下断奶羔羊血清炎性细胞因子、肠道通透性及肠道组织形态的影响。试验选取(42±1)日龄、平均体重为(11.79±0.54)kg的断奶羔羊24只,按体重相近原则随机分为4组:空白组(CON组)、LPS组、CSB2L组、CSB3L组,其中CON和LPS组饲喂基础饲粮,CSB2L和CSB3L组在基础饲粮中分别添加2和3 g/kg CSB,每组6个重复,每个重复1只羊。在试验第28天每组选取3只羔羊进行屠宰,LPS、CSB2L和CSB3L组在屠宰前3 h腹腔注射100μg/kg BW LPS,CON组腹腔注射等量无菌生理盐水。结果表明:1)与CON组相比,饲粮中添加CSB可显著提高断奶羔羊的平均日采食量(ADFI)(P<0.05),CSB3L组的平均日增重(ADG)显著高于CON和LPS组(P<0.05)。2)与CON组相比,LPS组断奶羔羊血清中肿瘤坏死因子-α(TNF-α)、白细胞介素-1β(IL-1β)和白细胞介素-8(IL-8)含量显著升高(P<0.05)。CSB2L和CSB3L组血清TNF-α和IL-1β含量均低于LPS组(P<0.05),血清TNF-α含量显著高于CON组(P<0.05)。CSB3L组血清IL-8含量显著低于LPS组(P<0.05)。CSB2L和CSB3L组血清白细胞介素-10(IL-10)含量显著高于LPS组(P<0.05)。3)断奶羔羊血清中D-乳酸(DLA)含量和二胺氧化酶(DAO)活性在LPS刺激下显著升高(P<0.05)。CSB2L和CSB3L组可显著降低LPS注射后的血清DLA含量和DAO活性(P<0.05)。4)CON组肠黏膜形态结构完整且绒毛排列整齐。注射LPS后,空肠和回肠绒毛排列紊乱,高矮不一,绒毛肿胀脱落。CSB2L和CSB3L组空肠和回肠绒毛形态较完整且排列整齐,肿胀程度降低,上皮轻度脱落。LPS组盲肠部分肠绒毛上皮脱落,腺体排列紊乱,结肠绒毛略微脱落。CSB2L组盲肠和结肠有轻微水肿,CSB3L组盲肠和结肠绒毛上皮未见明显脱落和水肿。LPS刺激显著降低了空肠和回肠绒毛高度和绒毛高度/隐窝深度(P<0.05)。CSB2L和CSB3L组空肠和回肠绒毛高度降低和绒毛高度/隐窝深度降低均得到缓解。CSB2L和CSB3L组十二指肠绒毛高度显著高于CON和LPS组(P<0.05),CSB3L组回肠绒毛高度和绒毛高度/隐窝深度显著高于CON组(P<0.05)。由此可见,饲粮中添加CSB可以提高断奶羔羊的生长性能并能缓解LPS刺激引起的断奶羔羊应激,抑制血清促炎性细胞因子水平升高和肠道通透性增加,从而在一定程度上改善肠道组织形态,维护肠道健康。  相似文献
