Hatchery-reared, juvenile European grayling, Thymallus thymallus (L.), and brown trout, Salmo trutta L., were each stocked six times into an area of a semi-natural stream. The order in which the two species were released was switched after every second experimental stocking. Temporal and spatial post-stocking dispersal, effects of previously stocked species, feeding behaviour and the influences of sex and size were studied. During each 48-h experimental release period, some fish were recaptured in a trap situated 200 m downstream from the stocking site, and fish remaining in the stream after each experimental release were caught by electric fishing. Significantly more grayling than trout moved downstream and left the semi-natural stream. Proportions of stocked grayling recaptured in the trap within 2 h and from 2 to 48 h post stocking in the stream were 36.4% and 10.0%, respectively. Corresponding recapture rates for brown trout were both 1.5%. Most of the grayling and brown trout that did not leave the stream early were recaptured in deep, slow-moving water at low velocities in the release area. The presence of grayling at the time that the brown trout were stocked resulted in significantly fewer brown trout staying in the upper part of the stream. Within 48 h of their release, 33.3% and 22.8% of the grayling and brown trout, respectively, had eaten natural food items. The mean length of brown trout recaptured in the upper part of the stocking area was significantly lower than that of fish recaptured in the lower part and in the trap. Among brown trout, males showed a significantly greater propensity to eat and to stay in the upper part of the stream near the stocking site compared with females . Brown trout with natural food items in their stomachs had significantly lower mean length than trout without such items. No sex- or size-related differences were found in the spatial distribution or feeding activity of grayling.  相似文献

Abstract The post-stocking behaviour of hatchery-reared juvenile European grayling, Thymallus thymallus (L.), with in-stream acclimatization in a pool for 4, 8, and 12 days before release was compared with fish released directly into a 370-m long seminatural stream during 1995 and 1996. The behaviour of these groups was compared with fish acclimatized for 16 h in a holding pen (0.7 m3) in a more fast-flowing part of the stream. All fish were released in the experimental stream at the same time. Initially groups of 30 individuals were compared, but this was reduced because of the mortality during acclimatization. Temporal and spatial distribution, feed intake in relation to sex and size of fish were followed for 7 days after release. Between 33 and 59% of all groups of fish released into the pool left the experimental area and were recaptured in a trap at the downstream end of the experimental stream. The acclimatization period had no significant influence on the percentage of fish moving downstream. Significantly more grayling left the stream from the holding pen (76.7%) than fish released in the pool (47.2%). Of the recaptured fish, 77% had been feeding. Fish recaptured within a week had lost more than 10% of their initial weight measured at the hatchery. Fish recaptured more than 2 weeks after release had lost a significantly smaller percentage of their initial weight compared with fish recaptured in the first 2 weeks. No differences were found in spatial distribution or feeding activity between sexes.  相似文献

European grayling, Thymallus thymallus (L.), were reared by four different techniques: (A) in a natural pond without a supply of artificial diet; (B) in a net pen fed artificial dry diet; (C) in tanks fed artificial dry diet; (D) in tanks, and for 16 days before stocking, transferred to a diet based on mixed frozen natural food exclusively. Fish within groups C and D were also split into subgroups of large and small fish. Feeding, growth and survival of fish in the different groups were compared after stocking into three different stocking sites during the spring of 1994. The stocking sites consisted of a barren lake (Lake L), a second lake (Lake N) containing an allopatric perch, Perca fluviatilis L., population, and a barren man-made pond. In Lake L, higher recapture rates and mean weights of stomach contents were obtained in fish reared in the natural pond and in the net pen. There were no differences in total recapture rate, or mean condition factor between small and large fish within groups C and D. In Lake N only five (0.5%) stocked grayling from rearing groups A and B were recaptured during the experiment and more fish from categories C and D were recaptured. This was probably related to size-selective predation. In the pond, there were no differences in recapture rates or in mean weight of stomach contents between fish from any of the groups. In sample 1 (Lake N, 22 days after stocking), mean weight of stomach contents was higher in the larger fish within categories C and D but there was no difference in condition factor between the groups. In sample 1, mean condition factor of fish from the different groups varied markedly, being highest in Lake L followed by Lake N and the Pond. Fourteen out of 26 dead fish in the pond showed clinical symptoms of the bacterial disease ASA. Mortality was related to low initial condition factor at the time of stocking. No stocked grayling were recaptured from the two lakes in the last sample (June 1995).  相似文献

Abstract. Takeable-sized (25-61 cm total length), hatchery-reared brown trout, Salmo trutta L., were released in early July from 1982 to 1984 in the sub-alpine River Sjoa in southern central Norway.
Of those recovered during the same season that they were stocked, 67-73% were caught within 10 days. Mean exploitation and survival rates in the same season of release ranged from 0 41 to 0-54 and 005 to 0.11, respectively. No tagged fish were caught 2 years after stocking.
The frequency of capture increased significantly with fish length. The length at stocking of those fish recovered after one winter in the river was greater than those caught in the same season as released. The migrant fish (n = 20) were significantly larger than stationary fish (n=434).
Between 87.5 and 95-6% of the fish with known capture sites caught during the first year (n=180) were recovered in the release area. The highest fraction of migrants was obtained in the year with the highest stocking density; the water discharge was also higher that year. The migrants (n=17) were caught 1.0 - 6.0km downstream, with the exception of one fish which moved 2.0 km upstream. The year after stocking, 63% (n=8) of the remainder were caught in the release area, while the migrants (n = 3) were caught 2.0-6.0km downstream.  相似文献

One-year-old hatchery brown trout, Salmo trutta L., ( n  = 16 520) from a sea-run, local brood stock were marked and released (scatter-planted) into the River Laisälven in northern Sweden. Eight different groups were created using Alcian blue and Visible Implant Elastomer tags. Half the fish were kept in small enclosures in four stocking areas for 6 days before release. The other half were released just after transportation. To evaluate the effect of acclimatization on post-stocking performance, the areas were electric fished 2 months later. During the electric fishing survey, a higher number of the acclimatized hatchery fish were recaptured than those released immediately. The growth rate of stocked fish differed significantly between stocking areas and fish held in enclosures grew more than those released directly. The rate of recapture of hatchery fish varied between stocking areas (6.4–17.4%). Movements of juveniles within and between the stocking areas were low, and only 3.6% of the recaptured fish were found in an area not originally stocked. These results showed that acclimatization of fish before release increases the number and size at recapture within a stocking area.  相似文献

Abstract  Koi carp is an ornamental variant of the common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., that was introduced to New Zealand in the 1960s and has since become a major aquatic pest. A total of 1265 wild adult koi carp were caught by boat electric fishing, dart tagged and released at multiple sites in the lower Waikato River and associated lakes and wetlands between September 2002 and February 2005. Subsequent recaptures by boat electric fishing and recreational fishing returned 76 koi carp (6% of all tagged fish). Of these, 85% were recaptured less than 5 km from their release site; only one fish moved more than 50 km. On seven occasions, pairs or small groups of koi carp (20% of all tag returns) that had previously been tagged and released at the same locations and times were subsequently recaptured together after considerable periods of time at liberty (mean 551 days ± 419 SD). Adult koi carp in the Waikato River showed a high degree of site fidelity, exhibited prolonged social groupings and females moved downstream more often than males.  相似文献

Movement and recaptures of two hatchery-reared brown trout, Salmo trutta L., stocks and landlocked salmon, Salmo salar L., released at different sites in regulated Lake Oulujärvi, were studied in relation to release site. Five groups of fish from each stock were released in approximately equal numbers. Most of the fish released in June and July were recaptured within 3 months, whereas the majority of the fish released in early winter (October and November) were caught the following spring, about 7–9 months after stocking. The release site had a significant effect on recapture rate. The results showed that fishing restrictions targeted mainly at gill net fishing are needed to preserve the stocked fish from overfishing. Significantly fewer recaptures were observed from the landlocked salmon stocking compared with brown trout. The recaptures from the landlocked salmon stocking indicated more active movement and less clumping compared with the two brown trout stocks.  相似文献

The River Dalälven Baltic salmon, Salmo salar L., population has been maintained by stocking reared fish since the early 1920s. Initially, all rearing was carried out at one hatchery, but since the late 1980s two have been used. Both hatcheries are situated 9–10 km from the river mouth but some 600 m apart. All broodfish were caught in a single fish trap situated some 700 m upstream of the upper hatchery. The salmon smolts were released just below the water outlets of each hatchery, respectively. About 2% of the released smolts from each hatchery were tagged annually with Carlin tags. Total recapture rates were higher for smolts from the lower hatchery. A higher proportion of recaptured fish was reported from the home river for salmon from the upper hatchery. The migration within the river to the fish trap was more precise for fish from the upper station. Strays were very late in the season and of a higher number from the lower hatchery. Observations of jumping salmon by the outlet from the lower station indicated that salmon returned to that point. The lower recaptures in the trap were considered a result of a shorter river migration of salmon from the lower hatchery.  相似文献

Abstract  Stocking is undertaken in the River Suldalslågen, western Norway, to compensate for an estimated annual loss of 20 000 Atlantic salmon smolts, Salmo salar L., caused by regulating the river for hydropower production. The annual contribution to angling catches from stocked hatchery fish varied from 7 to 334 kg, or <15% of the total number caught. Between 160 000 and 250 000 one-summer old fish were stocked, but only between 6 and 10 (<0.005%) were recaptured as adults in the river. Recaptured stocked fish never exceeded 0.03% by number, despite smolts dominating the stocking material in recent years. It is not certain whether the slight increase in catches comes in addition to or at the expense of natural reproduction. In most years more adults were used as parent stock than were caught as offspring. The lack of positive response to stocking is possibly due to lesser age, smaller size and later migration of hatchery smolts, and that seawater tolerance of hatchery smolts is poorly developed, all factors increasing mortality at sea.  相似文献

Abstract – The survival of brown trout and Atlantic salmon smolts during passage over small weirs was estimated in two small Danish rivers during the spring of 1998. Parallel groups of smolts were released upstream and downstream of the weirs and recaptured in traps further downstream. The results showed a smolt loss varying from 18 to 71% for trout and 53% for salmon. Furthermore, the surviving smolts from the upstream groups were delayed for up to 9 days compared to downstream groups. The study demonstrated that an increased proportion of total river discharge allocated to fish passage increased the smolt survival. Losses may be because of fish penetrating grids erected at fish farm inlets, predation and delays, which may lead to desmoltification. The low survival may seriously threat both the long-term viability of wild populations of anadromous salmonids and the outcome of the intensive stocking programme in Denmark.  相似文献

Abstract –  The effectiveness of a pool-and-weir fish pass in the regulated river Laarse Beek (Belgium) was assessed for bullhead ( Cottus gobio ), perch ( Perca fluviatilis ) and roach ( Rutilus rutilus ) from August 2002 to April 2003. Fish were caught by electrofishing downstream, within and upstream of the fish pass. They were marked with visible implant elastomer tags and released downstream of the fish pass. Our results suggest that the fish pass is ineffective for the bullhead because none of the 1270 tagged bullheads were recaptured in the upstream study area. Passage failure most likely resulted from excessive water velocities in the fish pass. On the contrary, 8% of the tagged perch and 29% of the tagged roach were recaptured in the upstream study area. Several management strategies are proposed to allow free upstream passage of the endangered bullhead at the fish pass under study.  相似文献

The success and value of yellow perch, Perca flavescens (Mitchill), stocking programmes are largely unknown because of the difficulties in differentiating between naturally recruited and translocated stocks. To determine stocking contributions of yellow perch, fingerlings and adults were collected from natural rearing ponds in south-eastern South Dakota. Prior to stocking, all fish were marked for 6 h in transfer tanks containing 700 mg L−1 oxytetracycline hydrochloride. Six lakes containing yellow perch populations were supplemented at low, medium and high stocking densities of about 25, 135 or 200 fish ha−1, respectively. Yellow perch populations were subsequently sampled with experimental gill nets during late summer; two lakes were resampled with additional gears (electric fishing, trap nets and cloverleaf traps). Yellow perch were processed for routine measurements, and saggital otoliths were removed to determine the origin of the fish. Stock contribution estimates determined from gill-net samples for Island (low), Oak (low), Twin (medium) and Wall (high) lakes were approximately 18, 5, 41, and 38%, respectively. Samples from other gears provided stock contributions of 15 and 10% for Cavour Lake and 41% for Diamond Lake (high density stockings). Although these results showed that supplemental stockings were successful, variability in stock contributions among populations indicates a need for further assessment of variables that may influence the stocking success of yellow perch.  相似文献

Abstract –  The effect of an embedded substratum on emigration and growth in juvenile brown trout was investigated in an artificial stream with sand added to produce sections of embedded or nonembedded substratum. Fish were allowed to leave the sections and were caught daily in a downstream trap. After catching and counting, fish were put back in their original section in order to keep the same amount of fish. Captures were high only on the first days after fish release. During the first 6 days after fish release, downstream-moving fish were more numerous in the embedded than in the nonembedded sections. The embedded substratum significantly decreased the final mean body weight and condition factor and increased heterogeneity in fish size. We suggest that a decrease in the habitat carrying capacity for juveniles could be the main factor explaining this result.  相似文献

Abstract  In total, 8211 1-year-old and 14839 2-year-old hatchery-reared brown trout, Salmo trutta L., from 11 stocks were released at the mouth of the River Imsa, southwestern Norway. The recapture rates and total estimated yield were higher for 2- than 1-year-old trout, although recapture rates varied between years of release and stocks. The recapture rate increased with mean individual weight at time of release. Total estimated yield from the individual groups of 1+ trout ranged from 2 to 20 kg per 1000 trout released and for 2+ trout between 11 and 250 kg per 1000 fish released. In all cases, yields were lower than the economic break-even yield. Most fish were recaptured the year of release (89.2% of 2+ and 76.2% of 1+ trout). Almost 31% of the recaptures were caught at sea and 69% in fresh water; 95.8% of the latter were taken in the River Imsa trap.  相似文献

The effect of natural lakes on the fish species distribution in surrounding streams was studied using electrofishing survey data from 3281 localities in streams throughout Sweden. The occurrence of lake fish (northern pike, European perch, roach and burbot) was significantly higher close to lakes, both up- and downstream, as compared to localities further up- or downstream of lakes. Correspondingly, the occurrences of stream fish (brown trout, grayling, European minnow and bullheads) were lower close to lakes. It is suggested that the lower occurrences of the latter close to lakes be due to biotic interaction with lake fish, especially predation from pike and burbot. The results strongly indicate that the effect of lakes on water temperature, drift of plankton and invertebrates or the moderating effect on water fluctuations and quality did not influence the stream fish fauna to the same extent as the presence of lake fish in a zone up- as downstream of the lakes. Lakes function as a reservoir of strong predators and competitors.  相似文献

Abstract –  Downstream movement of a wild population of brown trout was examined in a small Danish stream in relation to morphological and physiological smolt status from March to May. Downstream movement was monitored in a Wolf-type trap covering all possible passage routes in the stream. Trout caught in the trap were classified as parr, pre-smolt or smolt based on morphological criteria and compared with trout randomly caught by electrofishing upstream of the trap. Representative gill samples from trap-caught and electrofished trout were analysed for gill Na+, K+-ATPase activity and used as a measure of physiological smolt status. Only a few parr occurred in the trap. Few pre-smolts occurred in the trap evenly in March and early April. In late April, pre-smolt movement peaked. By comparison, the main downstream movement of smolts occurred in distinct peaks through late March and April. The majority of fish caught in the trap were judged as pre-smolts or smolts based on morphological criteria's and they were characterised by relatively high gill Na+, K+-ATPase activity compared with trout judged as parr. Trout caught by electrofishing upstream the trap, were classified as parr, pre-smolts and smolts early in the season (March). During and after the main smolt-run in April the distribution of the remaining trout in the brook became skewed in favour of pre-smolt and parr. The study suggests that smolting trout initiate downstream movement once having reached a certain physiological smolt condition (judged by increased gill Na+, K+-ATPase activity).  相似文献

Weirs and traps were used to monitor the movement of two strains of stocked brown trout, Salmo trutta L. Within 24 h of stocking, 15% ( n  = 13) of a Danish strain and 21% ( n  = 19) of a hybrid strain moved at least 100 m from their release site. In the following 5–6 days, no further movement was found for Danish fish, but hybrid fish continued to move, totaling 32% ( n  = 29) of the fish stocked. During this same period, 36 wild brown trout (≈ 3.5% of the population) were captured, moving over the weirs. Two weeks later, and one week after a flood, 70% ( n  = 59) of the Danish strain were recovered within their release sites and 89% ( n  = 76) were recovered during an electric fishing survey within the 3.5-km-long experimental area. In contrast, 43% ( n  = 31) of the hybrid strain were recaptured in their release sites and 49% ( n  = 45) within the experimental area. The total recapture of wild adult fish was only 16% ( n  = 41). Abstract. In total, 10014 hatchery-reared 1+ and 2+ rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), were released near the mouth of the River Imsa, south-western Norway, and in the Oslofjord, south-eastern Norway. The reported recapture rate was significantly higher in the Oslofjord(15·4%) than at Ims(3·6%). Between 70 and 80% of the recaptures were made in the year of release. The fish were recaptured in rivers and the sea along the Norwegian coast, most of them near the release sites. In total, 60% were recaptured in salt water and 40% in fresh water. Fish released in the Oslofjord were largely captured with rod and line. Of those released at Ims most of the freshwater recaptures were made in a fish trap in the River Imsa. In salt water most fish were captured by nets. Specific growth rate varied inversely with body weight at release, decreased with time after release and decreased faster for fish released in the Oslofjord than at Ims. In general, the proportion of fish recaptured increased with mean fish weight at release. Recaptured biomass per 1000 fish released was higher when released in the Oslofjord (87·12kg) than at Ims (24·42kg). Stocking of rainbow trout in fjords is feasible and may contribute to local recreational fisheries. Yield was highest when relatively small (∼50g) fish were released. Economically, the best results may be obtained when the fish are released in nutrient rich fjords.  相似文献

Traditional Antillean arrowhead fish traps were deployed around and on a shallow, 8-ha coral reef of south-western Puerto Rico in two 1987 studies: Study I, 2–18 March, a comparison of 30 trap catches and 30 visual transect counts; Study II, 8 April–18 June, a tag and recapture study of 95 trap hauls. Study I considered model taxa and conditions for calculating effective fishing area (EFA) of the traps on the basis of catch per haul and fish density from transects. Of the 185 fish of 24 species caught, EFA could only reasonably be calculated for three taxa: redband parrotfish, Sparisoma aurofrenatum, 25 m2 and 90 m2; stoplight parrotfish, Sparisoma viride, 24 m2; ocean surgeon, Acanthurus bahianus, 93 m2. Other taxa were considered unsuitable because of near-zero density or catche, e.g. white grunt, Haemulon plumieri, was often caught but seldom seen. Ability to assess EFA depended on trap location; future surveys of reef fishes will necessarily have to utilize stratified sampling based on habitat characteristics. Study II considered fish movements within a five-trap, cross-shaped array deployed on a back reef area. Of 702 captures from 28 species, redband parrotfish, white grunt and ocean surgeon dominated. Of 272 fish tagged, 65 were recaptured once and 24 were recaptured twice or more. In the short term, traps seemed to sample a discrete population. Except for one individual, all tagged fish were recaptured at the same trap or at a nearby trap of the array, i.e. no more than 25 or 35 m away; ocean surgeon were always caught at the trap where tagged. Using the mark-recapture data, population estimates were calculated for dominant species. These were not used to estimate EFA because the area sampled by the traps could not be reliably estimated. However, properly designed marking studies could be used to obtain this information. It was concluded that using EFA in trap-based assessments is a promising technique for residents like redband parrotfish or ocean surgeon. Mark and recapture techniques may also return useful density estimates for cryptic or diurnally migrating residents such as white grunt.  相似文献

Abstract Rate of recapture (gill netting), habitat use, and diet of three strains of stocked brown trout, Salmo trutta L., were compared with resident brown trout in a Norwegian lake. The strains originated from an alpine lake, from a boreal lake, and from the native brown trout population in the lake. Overall recapture rate was 5–8% for all strains. The low recapture rate could be due to the relatively small size at stocking; mean fish length varied between 13.1 and 14.5 cm with strain and stocking method. Two years after release, the frequency of the different strains decreased from about 12% in the first year to stabilize at about 1%. The alpine strain showed the highest overall recapture rate, whereas the native strain was recaptured at an intermediate rate. The overall recapture rate of scatter-planted brown trout was higher than that of spot-planted brown trout. Immediately after being stocked, introduced fish ate less and had a less-varied diet than resident trout; however, stocked fish adopted a natural diet within the first summer. The distribution of trout between the pelagic and the upper epibenthic habitat was similar for both the resident and the stocked brown trout. Results indicate that the habitat use of stocked brown trout is adaptive and becomes similar to that of indigenous fish.  相似文献
