Epithelioid trophoblastic tumor (ETT) is an unusual type of trophoblastic tumor, with features resembling carcinoma. In this study, we describe a 4-year-old cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) showing, at necropsy, a lobulated mass replacing the left ovary and several nodular lesions within the lungs. Histologically, the mass in the ovary and lung metastases were characterized by nests of epithelioid cells, with intermingled, occasional, multinucleate tumor cells consistent with syncytiotrophoblasts and moderate amount of eosinophilic, hyaline-like material. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were diffusely positive for cytokeratins (AE1/AE3) and inhibin-alpha, but only focal immunoreactivity was observed for human chorionic gonadotropin, whereas placental alkaline phosphatase was always negative. On the basis of morphology and immunohistochemical reactivity, tumor cells were identified as intermediate trophoblast.  相似文献

An 11-year-old neutered male Yorkshire Terrier was presented to the Haemaru Referral Animal Hospital with a history of unresponsive tracheal collapse and an incidental finding of a lung nodule in the left caudal lung lobe on radiography. Thorough physical examination and imaging studies revealed no other masses. Cytologic examination of C-arm mobile fluoroscopy-guided fine-needle aspirates revealed numerous free nuclei and a low number of small round cells with moderate to abundant pale basophilic cytoplasm. Some cells contained indistinct basophilic granules in their cytoplasm, and extracellular pink material was noted. A caudal lung lobectomy was performed, and histologic evaluation of the mass revealed round to polygonal cells with abundant eosinophilic granular cytoplasm and round nuclei with mild anisokaryosis and 0-3 mitotic figures per high-power field. Cells were arranged in packets separated by fine fibrovascular stroma, suggestive of a pulmonary neuroendocrine neoplasm, specifically a carcinoma/carcinoid. The cells were immunoreactive for chromogranin A and neuron-specific enolase, and negative for cytokeratin, synaptophysin, calcitonin, thyroglobulin, parathyroid hormone, CD79a, light lambda, and vimentin. With these findings the tumor was diagnosed as a primary lung carcinoid. Eleven months after resection, there was no evidence of tumor regrowth or metastasis. The absence of necrosis, few mitotic figures, minimal pleomorphism, and benign behavior of this tumor resembled those of a typical carcinoid in humans.  相似文献

Metastasis of malignant carotid body tumor to multiple bones was detected in a 13-year-old female Siberian husky dog. Radiographs exhibited an abnormal mass in the retropharyngeal site and osteolytic lesions in the vertebral bodies, spinous process, tibia, and ribs. At necropsy, multiple masses were observed in the bones as well as at the dorsal area of the retropharynx. Histologically, the tumor cells, arranged in sheets and clusters, had eosinophilic finely granular cytoplasm. Immunohistochemistry showed the tumor cells were positive for neuron-specific enolase and synaptophysin. Electron microscopy demonstrated a number of dense membrane-bound granules in the cytoplasm of the tumor cells. Based on these findings, this case was diagnosed as multiple bone metastases of a malignant carotid body tumor. Spinal cord damage induced by the tumor mass was the cause of the hind limb paralysis of the present dog.  相似文献

A 9-year-old female spayed mixed-breed dog was presented to the referring veterinarian with a history of decreased appetite and difficulty with prehension and swallowing because of a firm oval mass in the tongue. On cytologic evaluation of a fine-needle aspirate of the mass there were numerous round to polygonal cells organized individually or in loose clusters with rare branching capillaries. The cells had eosinophilic granular cytoplasm, round to oval nuclei, and occasionally indistinct borders. The cytologic diagnosis was granular cell tumor (GCT) of the tongue. Impression smears of a biopsy sample of the lingual mass contained similar eosinophilic granular cells with variable numbers of clear vacuoles in the background, numerous perivascular arrangements, and occasional lipoblasts, suggestive of liposarcoma. On histologic examination the tumor was composed of numerous lipocytes with rare foci of round eosinophilic granular cells without evidence of vacuolation; occasionally, atypical mitotic figures were seen. Immunohistochemically, the cells were uniformly negative for periodic acid-Schiff and did not express smooth muscle actin, desmin, or cytokeratin but were immunoreactive for vimentin and S100. A diagnosis of well-differentiated liposarcoma was made on the basis of morphologic and immunohistochemical results. Eosinophilic granular cells may be a component of well-differentiated liposarcoma and are not limited to GCT. Liposarcoma should be considered in the differential diagnoses of lingual tumors in the dog when cytological evaluation reveals eosinophilic granular cells consistent with GCT.  相似文献

A 10-year-old female miniature poodle had a mass in its carpal joint of the left forelimb. The tumor was divided into small multiple lobules by delicate connective tissues, and necroses were found in some of the central lobules. In some connective stromal areas, chondroid and osteoid tissues were formed. The tumor cells were similar to the structure of apocrine gland epithelial cells with apical blebs resembling apocrine secretion and eosinophilic secretary materials within the luminal space, and spindle cells were sometimes found in the basal area of the glandular structure. In some areas, tumor cells invaded in the blood vessels, bone and bone marrow. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells forming tubulo-acinar to solid structures were intensely positive for cytokeratin and keratin K8/K18, and the spindle cells were positive for vimentin and alpha-smooth muscle actin. This case was diagnosed as a malignant mixed apocrine gland tumor with metastases to the bone and bone marrow.  相似文献

Unusual metastasis of malignant aortic body tumor to multiple bones was detected in a 5-year-old female English Setter dog. Radiographs exhibited an abnormal mass in the base of heart and osteolytic lesions in the bodies of T11 and L2 vertebrates, body of right femur, right proximal humoral epiphysis and infraspinous fossa near to the neck of right scapula. At necropsy, multiple tumor masses of various sizes were observed also in the bones as well as the heart base and tracheobronchial lymph node. Tumor masses of L2 and T11 protruded into the vertebral canal and compressed corresponding sites of spinal cord, leading to paraplegia. Histopathologically, the tumor cells, arranged in sheets or nests, were polyhedral, lightly eosinophilic, finely granular cytoplasm with mostly round to oval nucleus and had scattered bizarre giant cells. Ultrastructural study revealed the characteristic findings that tumor cells contained a large number of small, electron-dense, membrane-limited secretory granules in cytoplasm. This is thought to be an extremely rare case having multiple bone metastases of a malignant aortic body tumor.  相似文献

This report describes the morphological and immunohistochemical characteristics of an adrenocortical carcinoma with distant metastasis in a Sprague-Dawley rat. Macroscopically, a single large mass was observed in the adrenal gland, and multiple nodules were noted in the lung, liver and thyroid. Histologically, the adrenal tumor consisted of a solid growth of eosinophilic round cells with nuclear atypia. Vascular invasion was present, and multiple metastatic lesions were also observed in the lungs, liver, and mediastinal lymph nodes. Immunohistochemically, the nuclei of these tumor cells were positive for Steroidogenic Factor-1 (SF-1). In the thyroid, tumor cells histologically resembling adrenal cells were immunohistochemically negative for SF-1 but positive for calcitonin; thus the lesion was diagnosed as thyroid C-cell carcinoma. From these results, the present case was diagnosed as adrenocortical carcinoma with distant metastases. SF-1 could be a valuable marker for the differential diagnosis of adrenocortical tumors versus other endocrine tumors such as C-cell carcinoma.  相似文献

We report a case of ovarian malignant intermediate-type trophoblastic tumor in a clinically normal, nonpregnant 4-year-old rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta). A large solid lobulated mass replaced the right ovary and filled the pelvis. Multiple metastases were observed within the lungs and the liver. The tumor was histologically identified as predominantly composed of intermediate trophoblastic cells, without prominent hemorrhages and the classic bilaminar pattern of cyto- and syncytiotrophoblastic cells characteristic of choriocarcinoma. Immunohistochemical analysis showed the presence of placental lactogen hormone in many tumor cells and chorionic gonadotropin in a few multinucleated cells consistent with syncytiotrophoblastic differentiation. No other germ cell differentiation was identified in the pelvis mass nor in the metastases. In the absence of previous and present pregnancy, this neoplasm has to be considered as a nongestational malignant placental site trophoblastic tumor of the ovary.  相似文献

Primary ovarian tumors are generally uncommon in rats used in toxicologic studies. A malignant Sertoli cell tumor was present in the ovary of a 19-week-old female Sprague Dawley rat. Macroscopically, the mass was white and firm, 10 × 13 × 17 mm in size, and located in the right ovary. Histopathologically, the mass was composed of nests of pleomorphic cells, which formed seminiferous-like tubules separated by a thin fibrovascular stroma. The tubules were lined by tumor cells, which had basally located nuclei and abundant eosinophilic and vacuolated cytoplasm. In some areas, the tumor cells were arranged in a retiform growth pattern, mimicking a rete testis/ovarii. Disseminated metastases to the surfaces of the mesentery, spleen and liver were also present. Immunohistochemically, many tumor cells were strongly positive for vimentin, estrogen receptor α and Ki 67. Some tumor cells were positive for pancytokeratin and inhibin α. These findings closely resemble those of an ovarian-derived human malignant Sertoli cell tumor. From our review of the literature, we believe this is the first report of a spontaneous malignant Sertoli cell tumor in the ovary of a young laboratory rat. This case might provide useful historical control information for rat toxicity studies.  相似文献

An 11-year-old male toy poodle with neurological symptoms was diagnosed with a macroscopic pituitary tumor, which produced adrenocorticotropic hormone. Radiation therapy with a linear accelerator was performed for the pituitary tumor, and resulted in good local tumor control. However, serum endogenous adrenocorticotropic hormone concentrations were uncontrollable even after the tumor disappeared. Abdominal computed tomography revealed splenic masses, and splenectomy was performed. Histopathological examination of the surgical specimen showed tumor cells with eosinophilic and finely granular cytoplasm suggestive of endocrine origin. Since these cells were positive for adrenocorticotropic hormone, the case was diagnosed as a pituitary carcinoma with distant metastasis. Necropsy revealed multiple metastases to the abdominal organs. This is the first case report describing canine pituitary carcinoma with distant metastasis.  相似文献

Abstract: A 10‐year‐old spayed female Boxer‐mix was presented with a history of several weeks of soft stools, straining to defecate, inappetance, and lethargy and several days of hematochezia, melena, and dyschezia. Physical examination findings included mild tachycardia and tense cranial abdomen. CBC results indicated moderate mature neutrophilia. Ultrasonographic examination of the abdomen revealed a large mass with complex echogenicity in the cranial abdomen, likely associated with the intestines. Cytologic examination of a fine‐needle aspirate revealed a population of round, stellate, and spindle‐shaped cells arranged individually and in aggregates with occasional cells embedded in an eosinophilic extracellular matrix. The cytologic interpretation was malignant mesenchymal neoplasm with osteosarcoma being the primary differential. Surgical exploration of the abdomen revealed a 10‐cm‐diameter mass located at the intestinal mesenteric root. The mass occluded blood flow to portions of the gastrointestinal tract. The dog was euthanized due to the nonresectable nature of the tumor. Histopathologic examination revealed an expansile poorly demarcated mesenchymal neoplasm composed predominantly of spindloid and pyriform cells, occasionally embedded in a matrix compatible with osteoid. The diagnosis was extraskeletal osteosarcoma of the intestinal mesenteric root, only rarely reported in dogs.  相似文献

A 12-year-old female miniature poodle showed a 3-month history of neurological signs. Magnetic resonance imaging disclosed a high intensity tumor mass in the right cerebral hemisphere with compression of the lateral ventricle. At necropsy, a 2 x 3 cm white, friable mass was found in the right ventral pyriform lobe. Microscopically, the tumor cells were large, polygonal to round cells supported by a sparse fibrovascular stroma. The tumor cells typically possessed finely granular, pale eosinophilic cytoplasm with strongly positive periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) reaction. The tumor cells were immunopositive for vimentin, NSE and S-100. Ultrastructurally, the tumor cells showed large amounts of granules in the cytoplasm, and absence of basement membrane. Based on the above-mentioned findings, the intracranial granular cell tumor was diagnosed.  相似文献

A pituitary mass was found at necropsy of a male Macaca mulatta. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections were consistent with a chromophobe adenoma. Ultrastructural examination revealed the tumor to be comprised predominantly of sparsely granulated cells. The tumor cells were negative for prolactin, somatotropin, adrenocorticotropin, luteinizing hormone, and thyrotropin by the peroxidase anti-peroxidase method. Other major lesions were gynecomastia and galactorrhea, testicular atrophy, ankylosing spondylitis, and amyloid deposition in the liver, spleen, adrenal, and intestinal tract.  相似文献

A 5-year-old, intact male Italian Spinone dog was presented for progressive, severe dyspnea and coughing. Thoracic radiographs revealed a large mass in the right cranial thorax. Fine needle aspiration of the mass yielded a highly cellular sample containing dense clumps of oval to spindle-shaped mesenchymal cells with distinct intracytoplasmic vacuolation, consistent with lipoblasts and lipocytes. Cell clusters were associated with abundant eosinophilic matrix, which was identified as mucin, based on Alcian blue staining. At exploratory thoracotomy, the mass was found to be nonresectable, and the dog was euthanized. Histologic sections of the multilobular mass had discrete regions of variable cellular differentiation, including highly cellular areas of pleomorphic cells, areas of spindle cells and lipoblasts in a myxoid background, and areas of well-differentiated lipogenic cells. The histologic diagnosis was myxoid liposarcoma. The thoracic cavity is a rare site for liposarcoma in the dog. The cytologic features of lipoblasts together with a mucopolysaccharide matrix were useful for distinguishing the myxoid variant of liposarcoma from other forms of liposarcoma and myxoid sarcomas.  相似文献

An extramedullary plasmacytoma was found in a 10-year-old sheep. The tumor involved the mediastinum, where a 25 x 15 x 10-cm encapsulated mass was found. The lungs had multiple metastases ranging from 0.5 to 2 cm in diameter, and the portal vein contained a 10-cm-long mass. The cytologic and histopathologic analyses were consistent with a moderately differentiated plasmacytoma. The immunophenotype of the tumor cells was lambda light chain IgG+, CD79a-, and CD3-. Occasional granulomas were observed at the periphery of the mediastinal and pulmonary tumors. Microbiologic culture yielded growth of Corynebacterium from these granulomas. This is the first report of plasmacytoma in sheep. The tumor most likely arose from mediastinal lymph nodes and metastasized to the lungs and portal vein.  相似文献

A 10-year-old, neutered female, domestic shorthair cat was presented with a recent history of weight loss, polydipsia, diarrhoea and vomiting. On physical examination, intestinal thickening and mesenteric lymph node enlargement were apparent. Clinical investigations revealed peripheral blood eosinophilia, eosinophilic abdominal effusion and eosinophilic mesenteric lymphadenitis. There was a temporary response to treatment with glucocorticoids but signs progressed and the cat was euthanased. On histology, there was eosinophilic infiltration and fibroplasia of intestine and mesenteric lymph nodes. Large aggregates of neoplastic round cells in the intestine and lymph nodes were identified as T lymphocytes using immunohistochemistry. A diagnosis of intestinal T cell lymphosarcoma was made. This case demonstrates that hypereosinophilic paraneoplastic syndrome may occur in cats with lymphosarcoma. Eosinophil chemotaxis may be a response to the production of interleukin-5 by neoplastic lymphocytes.  相似文献

Cytologic appearance of a keloidal fibrosarcoma in a dog   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
A 5-year-old neutered male, mixed-breed dog was presented with a single 4-mm, nodular, firm, haired subcutaneous mass on the left flank that had been present for approximately 2 weeks. Cytologic preparations of the mass revealed many spindle cells, few mast cells, rare eosinophils, rare macrophages, abundant hyalinized collagen, and moderate numbers of erythrocytes. The spindle cells were oval to fusiform, with oval nuclei, finely stippled to lacy chromatin, 1-5 variably sized prominent nucleoli, and moderate to abundant cytoplasm with indistinct cell borders, wispy cytoplasmic extensions, and occasionally, fine magenta granulation. The cell population exhibited moderate anisocytosis, moderate anisokaryosis, and rare binucleation. The eosinophilic material occurred both in large angular aggregates with blunt ends and in amorphous aggregates with fine wispy projections. Histologic findings were consistent with a keloidal fibrosarcoma. To the authors' knowledge, this report is the first to describe the cytomorphologic characteristics of a keloidal fibrosarcoma in a dog.  相似文献

A 10-year-old Golden Retriever dog had a solitary tumor mass arising from the greater omentum. Histologically, the tumor showed varying cellularity and patterns of cellular arrangement. In dense cellular areas, spindle-shaped cells were arranged in interlacing bundles. The sparse cellular area was characterized by loosely arranged fusiform cells. The neoplastic cells frequently contained PAS-positive eosinophilic globules in the cytoplasm, and mitotic figures were frequently observed. The tumor cells were positive to vimentin, S-100 protein, glial fibrillary acidic protein, myelin basic protein, neuron-specific enolase and myoglobin. The present tumor was diagnosed as a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) with eosinophilic cytoplasmic globules arising from the greater omentum. To our knowledge, this may be the first case of primary omental MPNST in domestic animals.  相似文献

Three canine gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) were examined. Histopathologically, the tumor mass in the jejunum (Case 1) consisted of the proliferation of epithelioid cells with abundant eosinophilic or vacuolated cytoplasm. Gangliocyte-like or multinucleated giant cells were scattered. The tumor cells exhibited neural natures mimicking human gastrointestinal autonomic nerve tumors, which were immunopositive for several neuronal markers. Another jejunal mass (Case 2) was composed by a solid proliferation of spindle-shaped cells, arranging in interlacing fascicles and occasional storiform pattern. The tumor seemed to be classified undifferentiated GISTs, that showed no apparent neural or muscular features by ultrastructural and immunohistochemical examinations. In the pyloric mass (Case 3), the spindle cells having eosinophilic processes and elongated nuclei were arranged in sheets. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells showed muscular natures as regards alpha smooth muscle actin and desmin expression.  相似文献
