Gastrointestinal tracts of 48 yearling Maine dairy cattle were examined (8 animals every 2 months) for 1 year. Adult and immature nematodes were identified and counted. Species recovered were Bunostomum phlebotomum, Cooperia mcmasteri, Cooperia oncophora, Cooperia pectinata, Cooperia punctata, Haemonchus placei, Nematodirus helvetianus, Oesophagostomum radiatum, Ostertagia circumcincta, Ostertagia lyrata, Ostertagia ostertagi, Trichostongylus axei, and Trichuris ovis. Strongyle parasitism was observed during every sampling period and the overall incidence was 93.7%. The most commonly encountered genera were Ostertagia spp (85.4%) and Cooperia spp (81.2%). Seasonal fluctuations in the worm burden of various nematodes were observed, with largest numbers seen in the fall. The incidence and degree of parasitism appeared to be related to environmental conditions. Proportions of adult and immature worms were shown to fluctuate with the time of year. Greatest numbers of immature worms were observed during the fall and winter.  相似文献

Two groups of three month old, parasite-free calves grazed a permanently infected pasture for 14 days, Group A during the first two weeks of September and Group B during early November. Half of each group was killed 14 days after removal from the pasture and the remainder stabled overwinter before slaughter and parasitological examination. Marked inhibition of development occurred for Cooperia oncophora with a variable lower level of inhibition for Ostertagia ostertagi and practically none for Nematodirus helvetianus in those calves grazing late in the fall. Under the conditions of this study, inhibited Cooperia larvae resumed development in several calves soon after they were stabled while small numbers of Ostertagia resumed development regularly during the winter and spring with a considerable number of Ostertagia still present when the calves were slaughtered at the end of the stabling period. On the other hand, Nematodirus and practically all Cooperia worms were lost during the stabling period. In three of seven calves grazing late fall pastures, large Cooperia infections were either not established or failed to become patent.  相似文献

Two worm-free calves were allowed to graze on irrigated pasture with a naturally infected herd for each of 34 one-month periods from November 1979 to August 1982. After each grazing period, the calves were transferred to a cement-floored pen for 3 weeks and then were euthanatized and necropsied. Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora were the most prevalent species of nematodes recovered. Adults and larvae of Ostertagia spp and Cooperia spp were most numerous in winter and spring and least numerous during summer. The proportions of Ostertagia spp that were inhibited as fourth-stage larvae increased in late fall, peaked from March through April, and then decreased to low values during summer. The maximal inhibition in 1980, 1981, and 1982 was 72, 65, and 62%, respectively. The number of larval Cooperia spp was highest in winter months and, except for one grazing period when 55% of the Cooperia spp were larvae, the total numbers represented less than 15% of the nematode population during all grazing periods. Other nematodes encountered were Trichostrongylus axei, Haemonchus spp, O lyrata, and O occidentalis in the abomasum; C surnabata, C punctata, Nematodirus helvetianus, T colubriformis, and Bunostomum phlebotomum in the small intestine; and Oesophagostomum venulosum and Trichuris ovis in the large intestine.  相似文献

The occurrence and seasonal trends of nematode parasite infections in beef cattle on the Tablelands and North Coast regions of New South Wales are described, based on worm counts from 627 spring-born steers slaughtered at 2-monthly intervals from 6 to 24 months of age. The predominant parasites were Ostertagia ostertagi, Trichostrongylus axei and Cooperia spp. Large burdens of adult Ostertagia were seen in 12-month-old animals in late winter and early spring, and later in 18- to 20-month-old cattle in the following late summer and autumn. These infections often resulted in outbreaks of clinical parasitism. Massive numbers of inhibited early fourth stage larvae (EL4) also accumulated in the yearlings during their first spring, reached peaks in mid-summer and then declined. The possibility of their resumption of development to mature worms in the late summer and autumn period is discussed. Adult T. axei showed a similar seasonal trend to Ostertagia and may have increased the severity of outbreaks of clinical disease. Cooperia populations of EL4 and adult worms were highest in weaners during winter, but lower numbers thereafter indicated a strong resistance to re-infection. In addition, Haemonchus placei occurred frequently on the North Coast both as EL4 and adults in cattle of all ages up to 20 months. Of the other cattle nematodes, Oesophagostomum radiatum and Trichuris spp occurred in low numbers, mainly in weaners. Bunstomum phlebotomum and H. contortus occurred sporadically on the North Coast and Tablelands respectively. Intestinal Trichostronglyus spp, Oesophagostomum venulosum and Dictyocaulus viviparus were seen occasionally and Nematodirus spp were not seen. There was a poor relationship between worm counts and faecal egg counts. Cooperia spp dominated the egg counts, while those for other genera were generally low and did not reflect the relative abundance or seasonal changes in worm numbers.  相似文献

A controlled blind test was performed in 1984 to evaluate the anthelmintic activity of experimental formulations of compound F28249-alpha against gastrointestinal parasites in lambs in Kentucky. Twenty-five lambs were allotted to 5 groups of 5 lambs/group. The drug was administered SC to 2 groups (A, 0.2 mg/kg of body weight; B, 0.3 mg/kg) and orally to 2 groups (C, 0.2 mg/kg; D, 0.3 mg/kg). Group E received a placebo subcutaneously. Lambs were euthanatized 7 days after treatment for necropsy and identification and enumeration of worm parasites in the gastrointestinal tract. Group-E lambs harbored 7 genera (including 10 species) of nematodes and 1 genus of tapeworms. Worm collection data for group-A lambs indicated 97% to 100% of the mature Haemonchus, Ostertagia, Trichostrongylus, and Trichuris, and immature Haemonchus were removed; and 23% to 73% of the mature Cooperia, Nematodirus, and Strongyloides, and immature Nematodirus were removed. In group-B lambs, 94% to 100% of the mature Haemonchus, Nematodirus, Ostertagia, Trichostrongylus, and Trichuris, and immature Haemonchus were removed as were 70% to 84% of mature Strongyloides and immature Nematodirus, respectively, and 0% for mature Cooperia. The percentage of all nematodes removed in group C and D was 100%, except for Cooperia (95%) in group C and immature Nematodirus (93% and 95%), respectively. Toxicosis was not apparent. Small fibrotic or blood streaked lesions were observed at necropsy in muscle at the injection site of 2 lambs in group B and 1 lamb in group E.  相似文献

Worm-free Holstein tracer calves were used to assess the seasonal variation in number and course of development of nematode parasites of cattle on an irrigated pasture located in the California Sierra foothills. The most common genera of nematodes found in the abomasum and small intestine were Ostertagia and Cooperia, respectively. The infective Ostertagia larvae on herbage were most numerous in early spring and lowest in summer months. Arrested development of Ostertagia occurred in mid-to-late spring. The percentage of the population of Ostertagia found to be arrested larvae was constant (73% to 95%) over 4 years, even though the total number of nematodes in the genus was markedly different. Levels of infection with Ostertagia and Cooperia were found to correlate with pasture contamination occurring in the preceding fall and concurrent winter months. In the cecum and large intestine, Oesophagostomum venulosum was found to be the most common nematode. It is suggested that this species may replace Os radiatum as the cattle nodular worm in regions where climate is similar to that of the southwestern coast of North America. Evidence of seasonal hypobiotic development of Oe venulosum was found. Other genera of nematodes observed in tracer calves were Trichostrongylus, Haemonchus, Bunostomum, Trichuris, and Dictyocaulus.  相似文献

Several steers, reared in isolation until approximately six months of age, were placed on a small isolated enclosed pasture from late spring to late fall of 1970, 1971 and 1972. The pasture was left vacant and unused during the winters and early springs. The pasture had been used in previous years by cattle, and in the late spring of 1970 was grazed by cattle know to be passing gastrointestinal nematode eggs in their feces. The steers were slaughtered periodically, and the prevalence of nematode species in the abomasum, small intestine, and large intestine, was determined from random samples of up to 100 adult male worms from each segment. The following nematodes were found in the steers in 1971 and 1972 and survived winters on pasture: Ostertagia ostertagi, O. lyrata, Cooperia oncophora, C. mcmasteri, Nematodirus helvetianus and Trichuris discolor. Two nematodes Cooperia punctata and Bunostomum phlebotomum known to be present on pasture in 1970, since they were recovered from the steers in that year, were not found in the steers in 1971 and 1972.  相似文献

The efficacy of moxidectin, a new endectocide against natural nematode infections, was evaluated. Twenty-five calves were divided into two groups of eight calves each and a third group of nine calves. Moxidectin was administered s.c. to two groups (I, 0.2 mg kg-1 body weight (BW); II, 0.3 mg kg-1 BW) and the third group (III) received the vehicle (placebo) s.c. Two pre-treatment and one post-treatment faecal nematode egg count determinations were made from all calves, and they were necropsied 2 weeks after treatment for the identification and enumeration of nematode parasites. Group III calves, which received the drug-free vehicle, harboured eight species of nematodes (Ostertagia ostertagi, Trichostrongylus axei, Cooperia oncophora, Cooperia punctata, Nematodirus helvetianus, Trichuris discolor, Oesophagostomum radiatum and Dictyocaulus viviparus). The mean total worm burden for this group was 8935. There was a significant reduction in the numbers of many species of nematodes (Ostertagia, Trichostrongylus, Cooperia and Nematodirus) in both treated groups. Cooperia oncophora was reduced by 94% in Group I and by 96% in Group II, while all other nematode species were reduced by 99%. Immature stages of Ostertagia and Nematodirus were significantly reduced in the two treated groups. Two weeks after treatment, the mean faecal egg counts of both treated groups were reduced by more than 98%. Ten 4-month-old female sheep of the Karagouniko dairy breed were used to monitor the seasonal fluctuations of strongyle infections in sheep during the first year of grazing under the traditional production system in the region of Trikala, Greece, where control of nematodes is currently based exclusively on the frequent use of anthelmintics which might contribute to the appearance of anthelmintic resistance. The sheep grazed communal pasture plots and did not receive any anthelmintic treatment during the entire study period. Faecal egg counts (epg), plasma pepsinogen levels, blood values, and genera of parasitic strongyles recovered from coprocultures were recorded monthly. Mean epg for strongyle-type eggs were significantly higher during summer. Mean plasma pepsinogen levels were significantly higher during spring and summer. The genera of parasitic strongyles recovered from the faecal cultures were Haemonchus, Ostertagia, Trichostrongylus, Cooperia, Nematodirus, Oesophagostomum, and Chabertia. The percentages of larvae for Haemonchus, Ostertagia, Cooperia, and Oesophagostomum were significantly higher during winter. The percentages of larvae for Trichostrongylus were significantly higher during summer. During summer, levels of RBC, HGB, and HCT were depressed and levels of MCV, MCH, and MCHC were elevated. Mean epg for strongyle-type eggs had a significant inverse correlation with RBC, HGB, HCT, and positive correlation with MCH, MCHC, and percentages of eosinophils in differential leucocyte counts. The seasonal pattern of infection observed in the present study indicates that it is possible to decrease the number of treatments to one per year, thus, reducing the possibility for the appearance of anthelmintic resistance.  相似文献

The patterns of gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematode infections in a previously untreated Aberdeen Angus cow-calf herd were observed between May 1988 and December 1990. The cow-calf herd and replacement heifers were on separate pastures. The relatively high mean faecal egg counts of cows and heifers at the time of turnout were mainly owing to the maturation of hypobiotic worms. The strongyle egg counts of calves began to rise soon after turnout onto pasture and reached peak levels at the end of the grazing season. The number of infective larvae on pasture was highest during September/October. Ostertagia, Cooperia and Nematodirus were the most prevalent genera found at necropsy and on pasture. Larvae of these nematodes were able to overwinter on pasture and Ostertagia larvae, additionally, were able to overwinter in the host as arrested early fourth stage larvae. The high egg output of cows at the time of turnout may serve as a source of infection for their calves and be responsible for the late-season rise in pasture larval counts.  相似文献

The patterns of gastrointestinal and lung helminth infections in grazing calves were studied in two small grazing experiments carried out between May and October in 1985 and 1986, respectively, at Utrecht State University. For lungworm a very rapid translation of infective larvae was seen in both experiments, resulting in a rapid build-up of the worm burdens, and in July the second generation of Dictyocaulus caused husk. After the end of patency for lungworm, in the beginning of August, a rapid decrease in pasture infectivity, measured by pasture larval counts and worm counts of tracer calves, was observed. For the gastrointestinal nematodes the translation of infective larvae was much slower as a distinct 'midsummer increase' of pasture infectivity was not seen before the end of July. The worm counts of the tracer calves and the pasture larval counts showed that these larvae remained on pasture much longer than the lungworm larvae. As in Dictyocaulus, patency stopped in August-September in Nematodirus but not in Ostertagia and Cooperia, indicating a slower rate of development of immunity in both latter genera. In contrast to lungworm, the results indicate a clear and predictable seasonal pattern for gastrointestinal helminth infections.  相似文献

Residual ovine nematode pasture infections were assessed by grazing groups of ewes and their lambs on permanent sheep and cattle pastures and by the use of tracer lambs. Ostertagia spp., Cooperia oncophora, Nematodirus spp., Chabertia ovina and Trichuris spp. eggs and/or larvae survived on pastures overwinter. Second generation Ostertagia larvae were present in greatest numbers on pasture during the latter part of August and early September. The failure of a significant build-up of Cooperia oncophora was attributed to negligible worm egg output of this species in sheep. Exsheathed infective larvae (L 3) of 19 species of nematodes were tested for infectivity in either sheep or cattle after they had been frozen in 0,9% NaCl solution, stored for a relatively short time in the gas phase of liquid nitrogen and subsequently thawed. In addition, 13 of these species were tested after similar storage for up to 18 months. In sheep, Haemonchus contortus, Ostertagia circumcincta, Trichostrongylus axei, Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Nematodirus spathiger and Oesophagostomum columbianum were viable after 2 years of cryopreservation, a mean of greater than 90% of the L 3 being alive when thawed after this period. Similar results were obtained with Chabertia ovina L 3 after 18 months and with Marshallagia marshalli, Trichostrongylus falculatus and Dictyocaulus filaria, after a short period of freezing. On the other hand, Gaigeria pachyscelis and Strongyloides papillosus survived freezing for up to 7 months but neither was viable at the end of this period, nor was exsheathed G. pachyscelis viable without freezing. Most of these infestations were established by inoculating the infective larvae into the abomasum and/or duodenum. M. marshalli, T. falculatus and C. ovina also proved infective after oral dosing. D. filaria, the only other species tested by this route, was not infective when dosed per os after thawing. The infective larvae of the bovine nematodes, Haemonchus placei, Ostertagia ostertagi, Nematodirus helvetianus, Oesophagostomum radiatum, Cooperia pectinata and Cooperia punctata survived freezing for a mean of 26 months, greater than 90% being alive on thawing, but infectivity was generally lower than with the same genera in sheep. Even when not frozen, exsheathed Bunostomum phlebotomum was non-infective. When Cooperia spp. after thawing were tested for infectivity by the oral route, more worms developed in one calf infested orally than in another infested by inoculation into the duodenum. Ova of H. contortus, M. marshalli, O. circumcincta, T. colubriformis, T. falculatus, N. spathiger, C. ovina, H. placei, O. ostertagi, Cooperia spp. and N. helvetianus were recovered from the faeces of animals infested with cryopreserved L 3. No ova of O. columbianum or O. radiatum were recovered from faeces, because differential larval counts were performed before they were patent. Nevertheless, gravid females were obtained post-mortem. Frozen L 3 of N. helvetianus were used to re-establish a pure strain in calves, 2,3 million ova being recovered from infestations with 10 670 L 3 frozen for 26 months. The infectivity of the progeny of frozen L 3 was tested with M. marshalli and C. ovina. In both instances infectivity was high and the worms which developed also produced ova, thus completing the cycle. This appears to be the first report of infective larvae of parasitic nematodes retaining their infectivity after being frozen in liquid nitrogen (gas phase) for longer than 2 years. Results of real-time PCR analysis of coproculture third stage larvae (L3) using genus specific TaqMan minor groove binder probes were compared with the results of morphological differentiation of L3 after coprocultured and direct morphological worm differentiation from gastrointestinal samples of eight sheep with naturally acquired nematodes infections. Faecal egg counts prior to postmortem confirmed infections with trichostrongyles with a geometric mean count of 4828 eggs per gram for all sheep. Individual egg counts correlated positively with total worm counts (correlation coefficient 0.794). Five different nematode species and one genus were found in the abomasi and small intestines: Cooperia curticei, Haemonchus contortus, Nematodirus spp., Teladorsagia (Ostertagia) circumcincta, Trichostrongylus axei and Trichostrongylus colubriformis. Coproculture of faecal eggs yielded five of these, Cooperia spp., Haemonchus spp., Ostertagia/Teladorsagia spp. and Trichostrongylus spp. Comparison between morphological L3 and worm differentiation data showed high congruence (94%). The agreement between PCR analysis of L3 after coproculture and direct morphological worm differentiation was 84%. Thus, real-time PCR was found to be suitable as a speedy and reliable diagnostic tool for the assessment of gastrointestinal nematode infections of ruminants in the field.  相似文献

A study was done in Maine to determine the relative importance of winter survival of nematode larvae in pasture and infected carrier animals as sources of infection for susceptible calves. Under the conditions of the experiment, it appeared that winter survivals in pasture of the infective stages of the genera Ostertagia, Cooperia, Nematodirus, and Trichostrongylus were of greater importance than carrier animals as sources of infection for susceptible calves. While animals in plots infected the previous summer and simultaneously allowed to graze alongside infected carrier animals did show more worms than those grazed only in infected plots, these differences were not statistically significant. Both groups had significantly (P greater than 0.01) more worms than did calves grazed only with carrier animals for the period of the experiment (8 weeks). It was also observed that carrier calves with low fecal egg counts (less than 200 eggs/g of feces) introduced in early spring to uncontaminated pasture could produce enough parasitic contamination by early fall to cause fulminating infections in susceptible calves grazing the pasture at the same time. Infected animals that survived clinical disease during their 1st summer developed a strong immunity which limited their acquisition of further infections when they were exposed to severe pasture contamination the following year.  相似文献

Lambs severely parasitized by Haemonchus, Ostertagia, Trichostrongylus, Cooperia, Oesophagostomum, and Nematodirus were treated with fenbendazole (methyl 5-(phenylthio)-2-benzimidazolecarbamate) given at 3 dose levels: 3.5, 5.0, and 7.5 mg/kg of body weight. Efficacies against these genera, except Haemonchus and Nematodirus, were 100% at the 3 dose levels. Efficacies for the 3 doses against Haemonchus were 93.4, 95.3, and 99.8%, respectively, and against Nematodirus, 99.5, 99.6, and 100%. Efficacies for the doses against Trichuris were 69.1, 83.6, and 98.2%. Toxicosis due to the durg was not seen in these lambs, although they were severely debilitated.  相似文献

Sentinel calves were placed in pastures for 1 month in two environmentally dissimilar areas of the Texas Gulf Coast to determine the seasonal transmission of various gastrointestinal nematodes. Transmission was determined for Cooperia spp, Haemonchus placei, Ostertagia ostertagi, and Trichostrongylus axei. Large numbers of Cooperia spp were acquired from May through November, with the peak of transmission occurring in July and August. Haemonchus placei was encountered on both field sites but was transmitted in large numbers only at one site, during August. Ostertagia ostertagi was acquired primarily from November through May, with the peak of transmission occurring in January and February. January through March was the period when the greatest numbers of Ostertagia larvae undergoing arrested development were acquired. Trichostrongylus axei was abundance in December and January at one field site. In general, trends of transmission were the same in both areas, indicating that weather conditions were most important than vegetation type in larval transmission.  相似文献

Using 21 worm-free lambs in paddocks on old sheep pastures on 4 farms near Oslo, it was found that Nematodirus spp., Ostertagia spp. and Moniezia spp. were the only helminths which could survive the winter in the pasture in great numbers. A few Teladorsagia davtiani, Chabertia ovina, Trichuris ovis, Cooperia onchophora and Skrjabinema ovis survived the winter. Trichostrongylus axei, T. vitrinus and Oesophagostomum venulosnm showed a negligible ability to survive the winter in the pasture. The following species were never found to survive: Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Bunostomum trigonocephalum, Cooperia curticei and Strongyloides papillosus.  相似文献

The broad-spectrum anthelmintic efficacy of netobimin (SCH 32481, Schering Corporation) was evaluated using 30 cross-bred spring lambs with naturally acquired infections of gastrointestinal nematodes. Three groups of 10 animals each were allotted into either control (given a tap water drench as a placebo) or 7.5 and 20 mg kg-1 dosage groups (given the netobimin as an oral drench). Seven to fourteen days post-treatment, animals were necropsied and nematodes recovered by standard techniques. Examination of fecal samples taken on dates of necropsy showed median egg production was reduced in treated animals (61.98% with 7.5 mg kg-1 and 100% with 20 mg kg-1). The compound was highly effective in removal of adult nematodes representing a number of genera and species of trichostrongyloids at the 7.5 and 20 mg kg-1 dose levels (shown, respectively, below). These included Ostertagia spp., with O. circumcincta, O. trifurcata, O. ostertagi and Teladorsagia davtiani (96.20%; 100%), Trichostrongylus spp., with T. axei, T. vitrinus and T. colubriformis (100%; 98.72%), Nematodirus spp., with N. spathiger, N. filicollis and N. battus (100% both levels) and Haemonchus contortus (100% both levels). High efficacies against other species of nematodes (at both dose levels) were not statistically significant (Cooperia spp., Chabertia ovina and Oesophagostomum venulosum). At 20 mg kg-1, netobimin significantly reduced populations of early and late fourth stage larvae of Ostertagia spp. by 100%. The overall efficacy (all life stages included) was 90.16% at 7.5 mg kg-1 and 98.77% at 20 mg kg-1 dose levels. No adverse reactions or signs of toxicosis were observed.  相似文献

Larval cultures and faecal egg count reductions were used to determine the identities and frequencies of occurrence of nematode genera involved in cases of ovine anthelmintic resistance submitted to the Batchelar Animal Health Laboratory between 1992 and 1994. Based on an examination of 102 cases, it was found that, while there were some differences relating to the method of assessment, the genera most frequently involved were Trichostrongylus, Ostertagia and Nematodirus. Also implicated, although less commonly, were infections of Oesophagostomum/Chabertia, Haemonchus and Cooperia. The majority of cases involved resistance in two or more genera, with resistance in a single nematode genus occurring in 45% of cases. Most such monogeneric resistances comprised infections of Trichostrongylus (52%), Ostertagia (17%) or Nematodirus (11%). Anthelmintic resistance involving Haemonchus alone was found in only three cases. These results suggest that the potential role of narrow-spectrum drenches in the management and control of anthelmintic-resistant worms in New Zealand sheep is likely to be strictly limited.  相似文献
