Summary Three cultivars of maize (TMV-1, Katumani and Staha) were grown in the absence and presence of the root hemiparasite Striga asiatica in the field in eastern Tanzania. Infested Katumani and TMV-1 plants yielded 22% and 25% less grain than uninfested plants; however, the grain yield of Staha was similar in both infested and uninfested plants. Measurements of gas exchange and the quantum yield of photosystem II (ΦPSII) revealed that photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were lower in infested plants of TMV-1 and Katumani than in control plants, but were not as severely affected in S. asiatica -infested plants of the cultivar Staha. Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements, particularly the F v/ F m ratio, showed that S. asiatica predisposed TMV-1 to greater photoinhibition than control plants after exposure to irradiances of 2000 µmol quanta m−2 s−1 in the field during the day. The lowering of the F v/ F m ratio resulted from a decrease in F m rather than in F o. In contrast to TMV-1, infested Staha plants were not more photoinhibited than control plants by mid-afternoon. We suggest that the ability of Staha to yield well in the presence of S. asiatica may result, in part, from the ability of this cultivar to maintain high rates of photosynthesis in the field, thus limiting the extent of photoinhibition.  相似文献

Sesbania rostrata Brem. & Oberm. has been used as a promising halophytic plant to improve saline soil in north-east Thailand. Our previous study suggested that the salt tolerance of this plant was associated with its ability to translocate Na+ and Cl ions from roots to shoots and trap them in the shoot cells. The present study further investigated the effect of NaCl on the activity of antioxidative enzymes and the tolerance to an active oxygen species generator, paraquat in S. rostrata leaves. Higher constitutive levels of antioxidative enzyme activities, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR), as well as higher levels of induced CAT and SOD activities with salinity stress were found in salt-tolerant S. rostrata than salt-sensitive Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Meal. Tolerance of S. rostrata to paraquat determined by the chlorophyll content in leaf disks increased with NaCl treatment. These findings indicate that S. rostrata exhibits better protection against the oxidative damage caused by NaCl, at least partly due to a higher constitutive and induced activities of antioxidative enzymes.  相似文献

The effects of salt stress on physiological factors, such as inorganic ion absorption and antioxidative enzyme activities, of rice ( Oryza sativa L. cv. Anapurna) and Echinochloa oryzicola Vasing were investigated. Although having similar morphology, rice and E. oryzicola possessed considerably different salt-tolerance mechanisms. Echinochloa oryzicola was more salt-tolerant than rice. When exposed to salt stress (100 mmol L−1 sodium chloride, NaCl; six days), E. oryzicola had the ability to limit the accumulation of sodium ions (Na+), maintained high potassium ion (K+) content and had a constantly higher K+/Na+ ratio than rice. Rice was not effective in limiting Na+ absorption but had a higher antioxidative capacity than E. oryzicola . The constitutive activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase of rice were three and five times higher than that of E. oryzicola, respectively. Induced activities of SOD, ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase were also higher in rice than in E. oryzicola . The high antioxidative capacity was one of the tolerance mechanisms used by rice to cope with salt stress. Therefore, the salt tolerant-mechanisms are different between the two plants.  相似文献

The level of tolerance of various market classes of dry bean to cloransulam-methyl is not known. Three field studies were conducted in Ontario, Canada during 2007 and 2008 to determine the level of tolerance of black, cranberry, kidney, and white bean to the pre-emergence (PRE) and postemergence (POST) application of cloransulam-methyl at 17.5, 35, and 70 g ai ha−1. Cloransulam-methyl applied at 17.5, 35, and 70 g ha−1 caused between 13 and 23% injury in black, cranberry, kidney, and white bean, respectively. Cloransulam-methyl applied at 17.5, 35, and 70 g ha−1 reduced the shoot dry weight by between 16 and 28% compared to the untreated control. Cloransulam-methyl applied PRE reduced the height of black bean by 27% and the height of cranberry bean by 25% at 70 g ha−1 and reduced the height of white bean by 19% at 35 g ha−1 and by 37% at 70 g ha−1. Cloransulam-methyl applied PRE reduced the yield of black bean by 29% at 35 g ha−1 and by 43% at 70 g ha−1, reduced the yield of cranberry bean by 43% at 70 g ha−1, and reduced the yield of white bean by 36% at 35 g ha−1 and by 54% at 70 g ha−1. Based on these results, there is not an adequate margin of crop safety for the PRE and POST application of cloransulam-methyl in black, cranberry, kidney, and white bean at the rates evaluated.  相似文献

Dry bean producers in Ontario, Canada, have few herbicide options available for annual broad-leaved weed management and there is little information on the tolerance of dry bean to linuron. The tolerance of black, cranberry, kidney, and white bean to the pre-emergence (PRE) application of linuron at the rates of 0, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, and 2500 g ai ha−1 was evaluated in field studies conducted in 2005 and 2006 at Exeter and in 2006 at Ridgetown, Ontario. The four market classes differed in their response to linuron. Cranberry and kidney bean were more tolerant to the PRE application of linuron than black and white bean. Linuron applied PRE caused as much as 12% injury in cranberry and kidney bean, 47% injury in black bean, and 56% injury in white bean. Linuron applied PRE at 500–2500 g ai ha−1 had no effect on the height of cranberry and kidney bean but decreased the height by 7, 8, and 15% in black bean and by 10, 13, and 23% in white bean at 1500, 2000, and 2500 g ai ha−1, respectively. Linuron applied PRE at the rates evaluated did not cause any adverse affect on the yield of cranberry, kidney, and white bean but black bean yield was reduced by 16% at 2500 g ai ha−1. Based on these results, there is not an adequate margin of crop safety for the PRE application of linuron in black and white bean at rates >1000 g ai ha−1. However, there is a potential for the use of linuron PRE for weed management in cranberry and kidney bean at the rates evaluated.  相似文献

There is a limited number of registered herbicides in white beans. Field trials were conducted at two Ontario, Canada, locations (Exeter and Ridgetown) in 2001 and 2002 to evaluate tolerance of two white bean cultivars, AC Compass and OAC Thunder, to preplant-incorporated applications of S -metolachlor plus imazethapyr (1600 + 75 and 3200 + 150 g ai ha−1, respectively), flumetsulam plus S -metolachlor ( premixed at 1443 and 2886 g ai ha−1) and cloransulam-methyl (35 and 70 g ai ha−1). There were no differences between the two cultivars in their responses to the herbicide treatments. S -metolachlor plus imazethapyr caused as much as 5% visual crop injury and decreased plant height up to 20%, shoot dry weight up to 39% and yield as much as 21%. Flumetsulam plus S -metolachlor caused as much as 7% visual crop injury and reduced plant height by up to 25%, shoot dry weight by up to 46% and yield as much as 24%. Cloransulam-methyl caused as much as 10% visual crop injury and decreased plant height up to 35%, shoot dry weight up to 55% and yield as much as 44%. There were no differences in seed moisture content among any of the herbicide treatments. This research suggests that the margin of safety of white bean is inadequate to support the preplant-incorporated registration of S -metolachlor plus imazethapyr, flumetsulam plus S -metolachlor and cloransulam-methyl in Ontario.  相似文献

Ontario otebo bean growers have few herbicide options available for weed management. Six field trials were conducted in Ontario, Canada, over a 2 year period (2003 and 2004) to evaluate the tolerance of otebo bean to the postemergence (POST) application of bentazon at 1080 and 2160 g ai ha−1, fomesafen at 240 and 480 g ai ha−1, sethoxydim at 500 and 1000 g ai ha−1, quizalofop-p-ethyl at 72 and 144 g ai ha−1, imazamox plus fomesafen at 25 + 200 and 50 + 400 g ai ha−1, and imazamox plus bentazon at 25 + 600 and 50 + 1200 g ai ha−1. All treatments, including the untreated control, were maintained weed-free during the growing season. The POST application of bentazon, imazamox plus fomesafen, and imazamox plus bentazon caused as much as 9% visual injury and reduced the plant height ≤ 12%, reduced the shoot dry weight ≤ 32%, and delayed maturity but had no adverse effect on the yield of otebo bean. Fomesafen, sethoxydim, and quizalofop-p-ethyl applied POST caused as much as 8% visual injury but this was transient and had no adverse effect on the plant height, shoot dry weight, seed moisture content, and yield of otebo bean, except for quizalofop-p-ethyl, which reduced the shoot dry weight as much as 18%. Based on these results, bentazon, fomesafen, sethoxydim, quizalofop-p-ethyl, imazamox plus fomesafen, and imazamox plus bentazon applied POST have an adequate margin of crop safety for weed management in otebo bean production in Ontario. However, care must be taken to avoid spray overlaps to prevent injury from bentazon, imazamox plus fomesafen, and imazamox plus bentazon.  相似文献

The effects of weed shoot morphology on competitiveness for light in rice ( Oryza sativa L.) have not been well described quantitatively and are difficult to study empirically. A rice:weed model was used to analyse the effects of weed leaf area densities (LAD; m2 m–3), leaf angles (as leaf light extinction coefficients, k leaf) and maximum heights ( H m, m) on growth and competition with rice. Weed morphologies were hypothetical but empirically based, as follows: LADs were skewed to the bottom or conical, k leaf values varied from 0.2 (erectophile) to 0.8 (planophile), and H m values were 0.5 H R, 1 H R and 1.25 H R, where H R was rice maximum height. Other parameters were equal to those of rice. Growth and competitiveness were evaluated using mature seed dry weights (g m–2). Short weeds and weeds with conical LADs were weakly competitive, regardless of other traits. For other weed types, interference with rice was positively related to H m, LAD skewness and more planophile leaves. All three traits were critical determinants of weed interference but no single morphological trait guaranteed competitiveness. All else being equal, weeds with highly skewed LADs produced the most seed dry weight. Planophile leaves were particularly beneficial for short weeds, giving over five times more seed dry weight than erectophile leaves.  相似文献

AAC-toxin, a putative nonhost-selective phytotoxin, was obtained from Alternaria alternata causing a brown leaf spot disease of Crofton weed ( Eupatorium adenophorum ). The effect of AAC-toxin on the electron transfer reaction of chloroplasts showed that the activity of photosystem II, but not photosystem I, was completely inhibited by the toxin. AAC-toxin affected the following chlorophyll fluorescence parameters: coefficient of photochemical quenching ( q P), the half-time value of fluorescence rise, and the O–J–I–P fluorescence induction kinetics curve, but not the ratio values of F v/ F m (the quantum yield of photosystem II) and the half-time value of fluorescence quenching. It was concluded that the toxin inhibited electron transfer from QA to QB (primary and secondary quinine acceptors of photosystem II) in photosystem II by competing with QB for the binding site in D1 protein on the thylakoid membrane.  相似文献

A study was conducted to investigate the effect of salinity on pythium damping-off and tolerance to salinity among Pythium aphanidermatum isolates from different geographical origins, genetic backgrounds and saline/non-saline soils. Increasing irrigation-water salinity from 0·01 to 5 dS m−1 significantly increased mortality in cucumber seedlings inoculated with P. aphanidermatum and reduced dry weight of non-inoculated seedlings. In vitro tests in culture media amended with different concentrations of NaCl showed that growth of P. aphanidermatum, P. spinosum and P. splendens isolates was stimulated or unaffected at salinity levels stressful for cucumber (electrical conductivity = 5 dS m−1). Significant differences were found in tolerance to salinity among 47 P. aphanidermatum isolates obtained from different greenhouses. The concentration of NaCl required to reduce growth of P. aphanidermatum isolates by 50% varied from 23 to 62 dS m−1, with an average of 46 dS m−1, however, oospore production was more sensitive to salinity and no oospores were produced above 20 dS m−1. Analysis of tolerance of P. aphanidermatum isolates to salinity showed no relationship between tolerance to salinity and geographical origins or genetic data. Isolates of P. aphanidermatum from greenhouses with no salinity problems were as tolerant to salinity as isolates obtained from salinity-affected greenhouses, suggesting lack of evidence for ecological adaptation within P. aphanidermatum in Oman. Increased mortality in cucumber seedlings at higher salinity levels may imply a synergistic interaction between salinity stress and salinity-tolerant Pythium species on cucumber seedlings, resulting in greater seedling losses.  相似文献

Striga hermonthica causes serious crop yield losses in West Africa. Hand pulling, an effective method for the reduction of light infestations, might be encouraged if farmers could use this weed as livestock feed. This study evaluated the chemical composition and the voluntary intake and digestion of S. hermonthica herbage by sheep. Crude protein (g kg−1 dry matter (d.m.)) was 184 in the whole plant, 230 in the leaf and 87 in the stem. Ash content varied from 183 to 253 g kg d.m.−1. The concentration of neutral and acid detergent fibre and lignin in whole pot-grown plants was 364, 278 and 127 g kg d.m.−1 respectively. The digestibility of dry and organic (o.m.) matter was 493 and 657 g kg−1, respectively, and intake of digestible o.m. was 27.1 g kg W−0.75. The relatively high N and P levels in S. hermonthica warrant further evaluation in terms of its potential use as a source of protein or for compost. Its use as a feed appears to be limited by the high ash content and possibly by anti-nutritional effects on animals. These effects should be further investigated before recommending its use for this purpose.  相似文献

Host–parasite relationships in root-knot disease of spinach caused by Meloidogyne incognita race 1 were studied under glasshouse conditions. Nematode-induced mature galls were large and usually contained one or more females and egg masses with eggs. Feeding sites were characterized by the development of giant cells containing granular cytoplasm and many hypertrophied nuclei. The cytoplasm in these giant cells was aggregated alongside the thickened cell walls. Stelar tissues within galls appeared disorganized. The relationship between initial nematode population density ( P i) in a series from 0–128 eggs and second-stage juveniles per cm3 soil and growth of spinach cv. Symphony F1 seedlings was tested under glasshouse conditions. A Seinhorst model [ y = m  + (1 −  m ) z P–T ] was fitted to fresh top- and total plant-weight data for inoculated and control plants. Tolerance limits ( T ) of spinach cv. Symphony F1 to M. incognita race 1 for fresh top and total plant weights were 0·25 and 0·5 eggs and second-stage juveniles per cm3 soil, respectively. The minimum relative values for fresh top and total plant weights were zero in both cases at P i ≥ 32 eggs and second-stage juveniles per cm3 soil. Root galling was least at low initial population densities and greatest at 16 eggs and second-stage juveniles per cm3 soil. Maximum nematode reproduction rate was 33·1-fold at the lowest P i.  相似文献

Antifungal activity of bergenin, a constituent of Flueggea microcarpa   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The antifungal activity of bergenin against some plant pathogenic fungi, namely, Alternaria alternata , A. brassicae , A. carthami , Fusarium udum , F. oxysporum f.sp. ciceri , Curvularia lunata and Erysiphe pisi , was studied. Bergenin as its monosodium salt was effective against all the fungi and the effective dose for complete inhibition of spore germination varied from 15 μg mL−1 for F. udum to 125 μg mL−1 for E. pisi . Experiments on the effect of bergenin on powdery mildew development under glasshouse conditions revealed that it can control powdery mildew of pea at 2000 μg mL−1 by postinoculation treatment, the results being comparable with those of carbendazim (1000 μg mL−1) and wettable sulfur (2000 μg mL−1). It affected hyphal elongation and the number of primary and secondary branches.  相似文献

Genetic variation of the barley powdery mildew fungus ( Erysiphe graminis f.sp. hordei ) was estimated in three Danish local populations. Genetic variation was estimated from the variation amongst clones of Egh , and was therefore an estimate of the maximum genetic variation in the local populations. The average gene diversity, Ĥ , was estimated as 0.84. The effective population size was estimated as: log10 ( N^ e ) = 0.64 − log10(μ), or 4.4 × 109, assuming a nucleotide mutation rate ( μ) of 10−9 per base per generation. There was no significant genetic differentiation between locations.  相似文献

The effects of NaCl-induced stress on physiochemical factors such as inorganic cations, proline, malondialdehyde (MDA) and polyamines were investigated in the gramineous weed, Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv. var. formosensis Ohwi ( E. crus-galli ) and rice ( Oryza sativa L. cv. Nipponbare). Growth inhibition at the 2nd leaf stage under salt stress was more severe in rice than in E. crus-galli . Water content in the 2nd leaves was also more severely decreased in rice, indicating that E. crus-galli was more salt-tolerant. After NaCl treatment, Na+ accumulated in the 2nd leaves of both plant species but not in their roots. Proline accumulation in the 2nd leaves was significantly higher in salt stressed E. crus-galli than in rice, suggesting the significance of proline production in the salt tolerance of this weed. Content of MDA of the rice increased more greatly with NaCl treatment than that in E. crus-galli . NaCl treatment affected polyamine metabolism of both plant species, but the response of each plant to salt stress was somewhat different, especially in the leaves. Leaf putrescine and spermidine contents were high in non-stressed plants in salt-sensitive rice, although rather lower in E. crus-galli in response to NaCl concentrations. These results indicate that an increase in proline and changes in polyamines relates to the salt tolerance of E. crus-galli .  相似文献

A qualitative seed-based method useful for the detection of resistance to the herbicide tribenuron-methyl in Papaver rhoeas L. is described. Seeds were germinated on 35 mL of a 1.3% agar medium containing 2 g KNO3 L–1 in 8.5 cm Petri dishes in a growth chamber under 20 μmol s–1 m–2 of fluorescent light. When 0.24 μM tribenuron-methyl or more was added, growth in susceptible plants stopped after the cotyledon stage and they turned chlorotic. The resistant plants continued developing new leaves. The same effect was achieved when 0.2 g gibberellin (GA3) L–1 and 7.68 μM tribenuron-methyl or 0.5 g GA3 L–1 and 61.44 μM tribenuron-methyl were added. Germination percentage rose with gibberellin in the presence or absence of the herbicide. Plants developed rapidly, with only about 14 d needed to finish the test but sometimes root growth was reduced because of the addition of gibberellin. In the absence of gibberellin but in the presence of the herbicide, plants grew more slowly and developed smaller leaves with a 17-d evaluation period requirement. The test was validated with pot experiments in a greenhouse and also with field trials. The best combination was found to be 0.2 g GA3 L–1 and 7.68 μM tribenuron-methyl, assuring homogenous germination and testing of dormant seeds but avoiding root inhibition associated with too much gibberellin.  相似文献

The sensitivity of 22 major crops, pastures and weeds from the north-east grain region of Australia to atrazine and chlorsulfuron residues was determined in a glasshouse using a soil-free bioassay system. A logistic equation was fitted to the seedling fresh weights as a function of the logarithm of herbicide concentration by non-linear regression and used to calculate the doses for 10%, 30% and 50% inhibition of seedling growth (ID10, ID30 and ID50). The ID50 for atrazine ranged from 0.03 to 0.04 mg a.i. L–1 for Salvia reflexa Hornem. and barley to 1.47 mg a.i. L–1 for sorghum. The ID50 for chlorsulfuron ranged from 0.19 to 0.21 μg a.i. L–1 for lucerne and snail medic to 102 μg a.i. L–1 for wheat. Based on ID50 values measured, the predicted responses of each species to a range of concentrations of atrazine and chlorsulfuron were classified into four categories ranging from no damage to severe damage. These sensitivity data will assist in planning cropping sequences in soils previously treated with atrazine or chlorsulfuron.  相似文献

The inheritance of tolerance to the herbicide metribuzin was studied in two durum wheat cultivars, one of which, 'Anton', is resistant and one, 'Nita', susceptible. Parents, F1, F2 and F3 of the crosses 'Anton' × 'Nita' and 'Nita' × 'Anton' were tested for herbicide response. The character evaluated was the increase in weight of plants treated with the herbicide. As there were no significant differences between progenies of reciprocal crosses, cytoplasm was not involved in tolerance. Tolerance was semi-dominant with means values of F1, F2 and F3 progenies in the range of mid-parent. The heritability of this trait estimated by regression of the average of progeny F3 in their parent F2 had a value of 0.23 ± 0.063 and a value of 0.52 ± 0.150 estimated by the relation V G/ V P for full-sib F2 families.  相似文献

The susceptible rose cv. Madelon and the partially resistant cv. Sonia both responded with reduced development of rose powdery mildew when they were treated with the synthetic inducer 2,6-dichloroisonicotinic acid (INA). The EC50 for number of colonies cm−2 was approximately 0.4 mg L−1 in both cultivars when treated 4 days prior to inoculation. However, conspicuous differences were observed with respect to number of spores per cm2. For sporulation, the EC50 was 0.37 mg L−1 in cv. Madelon and only 0.08 mg L−1 in cv. Sonia. A comparison with the pathosystems cucumber/ Sphaerotheca fuliginea and red cabbage/ Peronospora parasitica is made and the importance of the observed phenomenon for the selection of parents in a breeding programme for (partial) resistance is discussed.  相似文献

Paddy herbicides have the potential to cause adverse effects on non-target plants. Susceptibilities of some aquatic ferns ( Azolla japonica Franch. et Savat., Isoetes japonica A. Braun, Marsilea quadrifolia L. and Salvinia natans All.) and duckweeds ( Lemna minor L. and Spirodela polyrhiza Schleid.) to paddy herbicide bensulfuron methyl (BSM) were evaluated with a 20 day exposure experiment using 200 cm2 pots. The BSM concentrations in the surface water of monitoring pots with no plants dissipated exponentially with half lives of 3.5 and 3.9 days at application rates of 15 and 150 g ha−1, respectively. The BSM concentrations in the surface water 1 day after application in the culture pots were comparable among plant species, and were lower than those in the monitoring pots. Bensulfuron methyl reduced the plant growth in all species. I . japonica showed the lowest intrinsic relative growth rate (RGR) and the lowest susceptibility with an effective dose resulting in 50% growth inhibition (ED50) of 21 g ha−1. Except for I . japonica , the RGR of the duckweeds was similar to the ferns, and ED50 for the duckweeds was higher than the ferns. ED50 for Sa . natans , A . japonica and M . quadrifolia were 1.1, 1.8 and 1.2 g ha−1, respectively, which were smaller than 1/20 of the recommended field dose (51–75 g ha−1) and ranged from 1/2 to 1/6 of ED50 for L . minor and Sp . polyrhiza (6.5 and 3.2 g ha−1, respectively). These results suggest that BSM application in paddy fields and its runoff in some localities is expected to have adverse effects on the growth of Sa . natans , A . japonica and M . quadrifolia .  相似文献
