Over three grazing seasons (1984-1986) a sward of perennial ryegrass, cv. Talbot, which received a total of 336 kg N ha-1 each season, was cut or grazed with ewes at 3- or 4-week intervals on a rotational basis.
Sward productivity was higher under cutting than under grazing irrespective of the interval between defoliations. Under cutting, mean herbage organic matter (OM) yields over both intervals were 8·66, 9·62 and 8·17 t ha-1 in 1984, 1985 and 1986 respectively while under grazing the corresponding yields were 7·65, 8·63 and 7·50 t ha-1. The mean annual yield of herbage defoliated at 3-week intervals was 7·50, 8·64 and 7 ·20 t OM ha-1 compared with 8·80, 9·60 and 8·46 t OM ha-1 for swards defoliated at 4-week intervals in the three years respectively.
The nitrogen (N) content of both the available and the residual herbage was consistently higher under grazing than under cutting. Available herbage contained 31·3 and 27·7 g N kg OM-1 and residual herbage 26·1 and 22·7 g N kg OM-1 under grazing and cutting respectively.
The mean yield of N under cutting was 284 kg ha-1 compared with 304 kg ha-1 under grazing. Defoliation interval had no effect on N yield, the overall mean yield being 294 kg ha-1 under both 3- and 4-week defoliation intervals. The effect of the treatments on tiller population was slight and inconclusive.
The process of grazing reduced yield probably as a result of damage to the sward through trampling; the positive effect of excretal N on yield was minimal on account of the short grazing periods.  相似文献

The effect of herbage allowance on the herbage intake and performance of ewes and their twin lambs at pasture was investigated. Daily herbage allowances of 40,80.120 and 160 g organic matter (OM) kg-1 ewe live weight, based on herbage mass measured to ground level, were offered during the first 12 weeks of lactation.
The sheep were grazed rotationally around four paddocks of a perennial ryegrass pasture for 7-day periods and herbage mass, extended tiller length and digestibility of the herbage consumed by the animals were estimated. Herbage intake by the ewes was estimated during weeks two to twelve and live weights were recorded weekly: during the last two weeks of the experiment grazing behaviour of one ewe on each treatment was recorded continuously.
Herbage intakes by the ewes (164, 1–81, 2–42 and 268 ± 0153 kg d-1) and live weight gains of the lambs (202, 245, 274 and 300 ± 7–3 g d-1) increased with increasing herbage allowances. Herbage intakes by the ewes and growth rates of their lambs increased up to a herbage allowance which was over five times the amount of herbage eaten by the ewes.
As the animals reduced herbage mass and sward height, biting rates by the ewes during grazing increased by 4 (± 0·08) bites min-1 cm-1 and masticating rates decreased. Mastications reached a maximum of 90 (± 3·5) min-1 at a sward surface height of 9 cm.  相似文献

Ninety-six plots (3 × 2 m) of well-established perennial rye grass/white clover pasture were mown to heights of 2·7 (Low) or 3·96 (High) cm (rising plate meter) at 14-, 28-, 84- or 112-d intervals in autumn-winter. A 7-, 14- and 28-d mowing interval was superimposed in spring on each autumn–winter mowing interval treatment with the low and high mowing heights altered to 2·92 and 4·80 cm, respectively.
With the low cutting height, accumulated herbage DM was more than doubled (1806 ± 79 kg DM ha-1) compared to a 'high' (754 ± 49 kg DM ha-1) cutting height in autumn–winter and this was due to increased harvesting efficiency rather than growth as estimated by leaf extension. Although defoliation interval had no effect on DM yield, the grass component increased and clover decreased. The composition effect carried over into spring. On average, 3·5 tillers were produced over winter for each ryegrass tiller present in autumn and tiller densities were higher in spring. Tillers produced over autumn–winter contributed more than 60% of ryegrass growth by early spring.
In early spring (16–30 September), the low cutting height increased herbage DM yield, in mid-spring (1–14 October) it reduced DM yields particularly in combination with short defoliation intervals, while in late spring (14 October to 11 November) cutting height had no effect on DM yields.
Over the entire spring period there was a very marked effect of defoliation interval on DM yields.  相似文献

Two 1·0 ha plots of a late-heading diploid perennial ryegrass (var. Contender) and a late-heading tetraploid ryegrass (var. Condesa), and two 1·4 ha plots of the tetraploid with Aberystwyth S184 small-leaved white clover, were direct sown in May 1987. Over the three years 1988–90 they were continuously stocked by Mule ewes with Suffolk-cross twin lambs, from early April to the end of August, at a target sward surface height (SSH) of 4–6 cm on one set of plots (constant swards) and, on the other set, al 4–6 cm rising after June to a target 6–8 cm (rising swards). The heights were achieved by variable stocking. Fertilizer N was applied only to the grass plots at the rate of 150- 180kgN ha-1 annually.
SSH was mainly within the target 4–6 cm, after higher initial heights at turnout in 1988and 1990. Mean heights of the constant swards (April- August) averaged 5·53, 4·43 and 5·04cm in the three years. The rising swards (July-August) increased in height over the constant swards by an average of 0·88, 0·48 and 0·55 cm, in successive years.
Clover content of the herbage mass dry matter in the grass/clover swards increased over each grazing season to average 13·0, 26·5 and 21·2% in the three years, with a high mean stolon density of 130 in m-2 in August 1990. Ryegrass tiller densities in year 3 were 23% higher in the diploid than in the tetraploid swards, which had 43% more than the 10000 tillers m-2 of the tetraploid ryegrass/clover swards.
It is concluded that the combination of a densely stoloniferous small-leaved clover with the open growth habit of a tetraploid ryegrass can achieve swards of high clover content under continuous sheep stocking.  相似文献

Diet selection from ryegass-and prairie grass-white clover swards, vertically stratified into three horizons (A > 6 cm, B 3–6 cm, C > 3 cm), was studied using oesophageally fistulated sheep during summer and autumn. Animals grazed for 3-day periods. Apparent herbage intake was calculated from total herbage disappearance. The composition of each horizon and of the diet selected was measured daily.
Herbage mass (DM ha-1) and sward height (cm) prior to grazing were not significantly different between swards in each season, and were 2·0 and 20 in summer and 1·6 and 10 in autumn. In summer, 36% and 5% of the green grass leaf (GGL) for prairie grass and ryegrass, respectively, was distributed in horizons A and B. In autumn 39% and 29% of GGL occurred above 3 cm for prairie grass and ryegrass, respectively. GGL distribution determined which sward horizons were grazed. Sheep grazed horizon C (0–3 cm) of summer ryegrass pasture, and the surface canopy (>3 cm) of all other swards.
In summer, apparent intake achieved by sheep grazing prairie grass swards was 87% higher than that achieved on ryegrass swards. In autumn a greater GGL distribution above 3 cm with prairie  相似文献

The change in structure of continuously grazed versus infrequently cut swards of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L), cv. S23, was investigated during their first full harvest year. Measurements were made from early May until late September. The intensity of stocking by sheep in the grazed sward was adjusted in an attempt to maintain a high level of radiation interception and the cut sward was harvested at approximately monthly intervals.
The herbage mass, lamina area index and radiation interception of the cut sward varied in a cyclic pattern between harvests but in the grazed sward these parameters showed considerably less variation, although they all increased early in the season and then declined later. The proportion of dead material above ground increased throughout the season in both sward types but was more marked in the grazed sward.
There were major differences between the grazed and cut swards in the number of tillers per unit ground area; the difference became more marked throughout the season and by September the tiller densities in the grazed and cut swards were 3·204 m-2 and 6·203 m-2 respectively. Divergence in tiller density was associated with differences in specific stem weight and leaf area per tiller.
Rates of appearance and death of leaves on tillers in the grazed sward were determined. During May, leaf appearance exceeded leaf death but this was reversed in June. During the rest of the season as a new leaf appeared on a tiller so the oldest leaf died.  相似文献

A field experiment with mixed swards of perennial ryegrass and while clover carded out in 1982–83 using small cut plots is described. With perennial ryegrass, lime slightly decreased annual dry matter (DM) production in 1982 (the sowing year) but increased it in 1983 (the first harvest year) by about 1 t ha-1. Applications of N and P produced small increases in DM in 1982 and greater increases in 1983. In the latter season annual DM production varied from an average of 3·5 to about 10 t ha-1 with 0 or 480 kg N ha-1 applied in three equal-sized dressings throughout the growing season. Application of 40 kg P ha-1 in 1982 increased DM production by about 2·5 t ha-1 in 1983 but higher rates had little effect. Fifteen mg extractable P kg-1 soil seemed sufficient to support levels of production normally expected from ryegrass pastures in upland Scotland, Applications of K did not affect DM production. N increased tiller weight and sward height of ryegrass; lime and P tended to increase tiller weight but this effect was not statistically significant. Leaf appearance and tiller number were not affected by treatments.
The white clover content of the pasture was decreased 10-fold by application of N and increased by lime and P (1·45 and 1·46-fold. respectively). The DM response to P was most apparent in limed soil and was also affected by the siting of the plots in the experimental area. Effects of lime and P on growth of white clover were to increase the number of stolon growing points and root nodule numbers per unit area.
The results emphasize the importance of lime and P fertilizer for establishment and growth of pasture in this soil and the differences between white clover and ryegrass in their responses to these.  相似文献

The herbage intake and performance of set-stocked suckler cows and calves   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Groups of eight Hereford × Friesian cows and their South Devon cross calves were set stocked over a 24-week grazing season at 3·23 (low), 3·21 (medium) or 4·24 (high) cows ha-1 together with their calves. For the first 8 weeks only two-thirds of the total area was grazed. Increasing the stocking rate from low to medium reduced daily milk yield and cow and calf liveweight gains by 1·2, 0·24 and 0·29 kg d-1 respectively, and from medium to high by 1·2, 0·24 and 0·23 kg d-1. The main sward factor influencing faecal output and herbage intake was the quantity of organic matter on the pastures but the digestibility of the herbage selected also exerted a significant effect on the intake of cows. Major depressions in the herbage intake of cows occurred once the average sward height fell below 7 cm. Output of calf live weight was 628, 658 and 743 kg ha-1 for the 3 stocking rates from low to high, and for cows 246, 179 and 30 kg ha-1. It was concluded that decisions on pasture management should be taken in relation to the cow rather than the calf on set-stocked swards.  相似文献

Successful integration of rotational grazing into livestock production systems requires estimates of pasture growth rates for feed budgeting of daily animal intake. By matching livestock nutrient demand with forage availability, over-feeding of supplements can be minimized, which reduces feed costs and the need lo manage surplus nutrients, A three-year grazing study was carried out on a Kentucky bluegrass ( Poa pratensis L.)-dominant pasture to estimate the daily quantity of herbage available to cattle in an intensive, rotational grazing system. Herbage production, species composition, and forage quality were determined in each of the six grazing cycles in a year, from April until September. The average length of a grazing cycle was 28·6 d, with 2·7 d for duration of grazing on a paddock. Pre-grazing and post-grazing sward heights, measured with a plate meter, were 14 and 7 cm, and the corresponding herbage masses were 1955 and 775 kg DM ha−1 respectively. Under adequate soil moisture during 1989, herbage available for daily intake was 53 kg ha−1 from April until mid- August, declining to approximately 32 kg ha−1 d−1 by the end of September. Distribution of this herbage was fairly uniform until the end of August. However, a dry summer in 1991 reduced herbage availability to 15 kg ha−1 d−1. Bluegrass and white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) formed 70% of the herbage yield during the period April–June. Later in the season, dead matter and other species increased, reducing the contribution of bluegrass and clover to approximately 60% of total dry matter. While these pastures have the potential to provide significant amounts of forage for 5–6 months in a year, additional on-farm forage reserves are needed during periods of water stress.  相似文献

A comparison was made of stocking rates of 4·7, 5·6 and 6·4 cows ha-1 during the first 7 weeks (period 1) of the grazing season. Each group of British Friesian cows was continuously stocked on a day and a night field. In the subsequent periods 2 and 3 (each lasting 7 weeks) the three groups were maintained at the same stocking rate within periods (4·2 and 31 cows ha-1, respectively). The differential stocking rates were achieved by the addition and removal of cows.
The stocking rates applied in period I had no significant effects on milk yield, milk composition, liveweight change or condition score, in any period. Milk production ha-1 over the three periods totalled 12390,13 978 and 14986 kg, and the estimated utilized metabolizable energy totalled 773, 81·5 and 86·6 GJ ha-1 for low, medium and high stocking rates, respectively.
Increased stocking rate in period I was associated with a decrease in sward height in periods 1 and 2. This led to an increase in herbage metabolizable energy, and crude protein contents, and to an increase in tiller population density. The lowest stocking rate gave greater live individual tiller weights throughout the experiment and a longer interval between defoliation of individual tillers in period 1.
The results indicate that high stocking rates in the spring are not necessarily detrimental to overall summer performance of spring calving dairy cows. However, high stocking rates in the early season ensure a high level of herbage utilization and milk output ha-1 in that period. Although this practice leads to a reduced sward height in mid season, the sward has less rejected area, a higher tiller population density and a higher digestibility than swards stocked at a lower level.  相似文献

Changes in the crude protein (CP) concentration of white clover and perennial ryegrass herbage from a mixed sward were determined on six sampling dates from May to October in each of 2 years. The swards were grown without fertilizer N in an organic farming system and continuously grazed by dairy cows during the grazing season. The annual mean contents of white clover in the dry matter (DM) of the sward were 272·3 and 307·0 g kg−1 in Years 1 and 2. The mean CP concentrations of the white clover and perennial ryegrass herbage were 251·6 and 151·9 g kg−1 DM in Year 1 and 271·9 and 174·0 g kg−1 DM in Year 2 respectively. The CP concentration of the white clover increased significantly during the grazing season from 220·0 to 284·1 g kg−1 DM in Year 1 and from 269·0 to 315·5 g kg−1 DM in Year 2. In the perennial ryegrass herbage the CP concentration increased from 112·2 to 172·6 g kg−1 DM in Year 1 and from 142·7 to 239·5 g kg−1 DM in Year 2. The rate of increase during the season in the CP concentration of the perennial ryegrass herbage was similar to the rate of increase recorded in the white clover herbage.  相似文献

Over a 24-week period, three groups of dairy cows were continuously stocked at 8, 10 or 12 cows ha-1 between morning and afternoon milkings, and overnight were housed and offered grass silage ad libitum. Due to a prolonged drought, sward heights only averaged 4·1 cm.
The increase in daytime stocking rate led to a decline in herbage intake, and increases in silage intake. At the highest stocking rate (12 cows ha-1), the silage intake failed to compensate for the reduced herbage intake. Consequently the total dry matter and estimated metabolizable energy intakes were lower than for the 8 and 10 cows ha-1 treatments. Milk yields and milk composition were not significantly affected by treatment but the 12 cows ha-1 stocking rate gave the lowest milk and milk solids yields.
The utilized metabolizable energy (UME) on the grazed swards was greatest for the 10 cows ha-1 treatment. The sward cut to provide the silage had a UME level (GJ ha-1) 32% greater on average than the grazed swards during the same growth period. The total areas utilized for grazing and silage production for 8, 10 and 12 cows ha-1 were 0·240, 0·224 and 0·215 ha respectively. Fat and protein yields per unit area were greatest for the 10 cows ha-1 group.  相似文献

In two experiments, ewes in weeks 1–20 of lactation received either pasture only or pasture plus ad libitum conserved forage. Herbage height was maintained at 3·3–3·4 cm on both treatments by manipulation of stocking rate in the 24 plots (twelve per treatment) used for the experiment with additional ewes and lambs. In experiment 1, silage, which was of lower metabolizable energy (ME) and crude protein (CP) contents than the grazed herbage, was consumed at an average of 375 g dry matter (DM) ewe−1 d−1. In experiment 2 a strawmix, containing (g kg −1 freshweight) 480 g barley straw, 300 g concentrate and 220 g molasses, again with a lower ME and CP content than the grazed herbage, was consumed at an average of 165 g DM ewe −1 d −1. In both experiments ewes not receiving forage lost weight whereas those with forage gained weight and tended to have increased body condition scores. Offering silage or strawmix did not affect lamb liveweight gain or stocking rate.  相似文献

The frequency and severity of defoliation of individual grass tillers and clover plant units was studied in Lolium perenne-Trifolium repens swards grazed by sheep at stocking rates ranging from 25 to 55 sheep ha-1 and either receiving no N fertilizer or 200 kg N ha-1. On average, sheep at the highest stocking rate defoliated individual tillers once every 4·2 d compared with once every 9·2 d at the lowest stocking rate with the removal of 58% and 47% of the leaf length of each tiller leaf at these stocking rates. Clover plant units were defoliated once every 4·2 d at the highest stocking rate and once every 7·2 d at the lowest stocking rate with the removal of 51% of its leaves and 12% of its stolon at the high stocking rate and 42% and 4% respectively at the low stocking rate. Differences in frequency and severity of defoliation between N fertilizer treatments were smaller than between stocking rates. Grass tillers and clover plant units were both defoliated less frequently and less severely in swards fertilized with N, though the difference in defoliation frequency between fertilizer treatments decreased as stocking rate increased. Defoliation frequency was related to the length of grass leaf per tiller or number of clover leaves per plant unit, and to the number of these tillers and the herbage on offer.  相似文献

Three replicate paddocks, each of 0·235 ha, containing adjacent monocultures of perennial ryegrass or white clover [50:50 by ground area, 6 cm sward surface height (SSH) at start of experiment] were continuously stocked with three yearling and four mature non-lactating, non-pregnant Scottish halfbred ewes for 12 weeks. Herbage intake, grazing behaviour and dietary selection were measured on seven occasions. Clover SSH declined rapidly over the first 5 weeks then stabilized at 1·2–1·6 cm, whereas perennial ryegrass SSH rose slightly initially, then declined gradually. Animals initially included proportionately c . 0·6 white clover in their diet but, by the end of the experiment, this had fallen to 0·3. Total daily herbage intake declined over the 12 weeks from 1·8 kg dry matter (DM) day–1 at the start to 1·0 kg DM day–1. Total grazing time increased from 561 min day–1 to 649 min day–1 at the end of the experiment. The results suggest that, despite overall herbage depletion and a greater depletion of white clover than perennial ryegrass as a result of the initial partial preference for white clover, the animals traded-off a reduced total intake and an increased grazing time in an attempt to maintain their initial preferred dietary composition.  相似文献

Between 1976 and 1978 a further 154 beef animals were grazed in separate groups on Alberts and Far field at Begbroke Hill, the former being a paddock system and the latter being set-stocked. Each year part of Alberts received complete fertilizer (147–180 kg ha-1 N) and part did not. All of Far field received complete fertilizer (140–190 kg ha-1 N). Drought caused a reduction in output in 1976, but in 1977 and 1978 total production of live weight was 9·07 and 8·74 t respectively from 11·65 ha grassland. Calculations of corrected outputs show that maxima of 829 kg ha-1 in Alberts and 908 kg ha-1 in Far field were achieved from fertilized grass. The highest output in Alberts represented 929 livestock unit grazing days per ha or 87·9 GJ ha-1 in 1978.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to examine the relationships between sward surface height and the intake and liveweight gain of lactating female goats and their single kids and of 12-month-old castrated male goats continuously grazing grass pasture. Herbage intake was measured using the n -alkane marker technique. Goats grazed the experimental area from May to August at nominal sward heights of 3–4, 5–6, 7–8 and 9–10 cm. Sward heights achieved were variable but were consistently ranked in treatment order.
The herbage intake of females [57-140 g DM (kg LW0.75)−1 d−1] and castrates [26-88 g DM (kg LW0.75)−1 d−1] increased linearly with sward height over the range 3.2-11.0 cm. The liveweight change of females and castrates reflected the pattern of change in sward height.
The herbage intake of kids [17-41 g DM (kg LW0·75)−1 d−1] was not related to sward height, but there was a consistent increase in liveweight gain with sward height from 98 to 129 g d−1. The herbage intake of kids did not increase with age with means of 25–29 g DM (kg LW 0·75 d−1 for kids aged 9–17 weeks.
There was evidence that all classes of goat selected green leafy material of high digestibility.  相似文献

A comparison was made under continuous grazing between applying a high stocking rate in spring (H) to maintain the sward surface height (SSH) of a perennial ryegrass pasture at 5–6 cm and a low stocking rate (L) to maintain SSH at 10–12cm with mechanical topping in mid-June. The experiment was carried out in the dry season of 1989 and a lack of rainfall markedly affected the treatments and consequently animals were offered supplementary concentrate and forage in July to compensate for reduced grass intake and low SSHs.
Treatment H maintained the density of live grass tillers and live: dead tiller ratio in mid-and late season, compared with the L treatment. The measured interval between defoliation of individual grass tillers was significantly less in the L pasture in samplings taken between 2 May and 29 August. January/February calving cows on the L pasture produced significantly more milk cow−1 with higher concentrations of protein and lactose, but less milk ha−1 compared with cows on the H sward. The results indicate that topping of a laxly grazed sward in drought conditions has no positive effects on sward characteristics or milk production.  相似文献

Herbage characteristics were studied over years 4–6 (1988–90) in three perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) varieties as grass-only (200 kg N ha-1) and grass/clover ( Trifolium repens L.) swards which received 75kg N ha-1 in 1988 and 0kg N ha-1 in 1989 and 1990 when continuously stocked with sheep. Mean total annual herbage production of Aurora, a very early flowering variety, was 11% more than that of late-flowering Aberystwyth S23 due to 21% higher growth as grass/clover pasture. The grass/clover sward of Meltra, a tetraploid late-flowering variety, out-yielded S23/clover by 17%. Herbage production of grass/clover was 86% of that of grass only in 1988 but only 54% of the grass-only swards averaged for 1989 and 1990.
In vitro organic matter digestibility (OMD) of Meltra was 38g kg-1 OM and 27g kg-1 OM higher than that of S23 and Aurora respectively. OMD of grass/clover was 15g kg-1 OM higher than that of grass only during the post-weaning period. Herbage intake was positively correlated with OMD of herbage.
The herbage attributes were related to lamb performance reported previously. Lamb output was positively correlated with intake of digestible organic matter.
Differences between the three varieties in herbage characteristics were greater as grass/clover than as grass-only swards, reflecting their compatibility with white clover. In this respect Meltra was the best and S23 the poorest variety.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out during 1982 in which the effects of three differing harvesting systems on the field losses occurring during the conservation of grass as silage were examined. The treatments were either (a) harvesting herbage directly by means of a flail harvester (unwilted flail, UF), or (b) pre-cu ing of herbage with a rotary drum mower and lifting using a precision-chop forage harvester with wilting (WP) and without wilting (UP). Herbage was harvested on 26 May, 21 July and 7 September 1982. The mean yields of herbage produced from plots harvested by the three systems were not significantly different, with dry ma er (DM) yields of 12470, 12300 and 12230 kg ha-1 for the UF, UP and WP treatments respectively. However, field losses with the UP and WP treatments were greater than with the UF treatment (P<0·01). As a result the yields of herbage ensiled with the UP and WP treatments, 11690 and 11320 kg DM ha-1 respectively, were significantly lower than with the UF treatment, 12710 kg DM ha-1 (P <0·05). Wilting of first cut herbage for a period of 72 h resulted in a significant reduction (P<0·05) in digestible organic ma er (DOM) concentration (determined in vitro), whereas small increases in DOM concentration were observed following wilting of second and third harvest material.
It is concluded that, even under favourable weather conditions, both pre-cutting and wilting of herbage prior to harvesting can result in considerable losses of nutrients in the field.  相似文献
