Traditional instruments used to evaluate dough and/or gluten rheological properties do not provide unambiguous separation of elastic and viscous behaviors. Recovery after shear creep and cyclic large deformation cyclic tensile testing were used here to decouple elastic and viscous effects. A large variation in the recoverable shear strain (∼7.2% to ∼28%) was seen for glutens from 15 U.S. popular common wheat cultivars with varying HMW subunits. Sedimentation values ranged from 29 to 57 ml for 12 hard wheat cultivars and 15 to 22 ml for three soft wheat cultivars. The tensile force at 500% extension ranged from 0.12 to 0.67 N for hard wheat glutens and from 0.10 to 0.20 for soft wheat glutens. However, the recoverable work after large extension was less than 40% of the total work of extension. In addition, recoverable work in tensile testing was highly correlated with the total work of extension (r2 = 0.97) and mixograph mix times (r2 = 0.81). Good to excellent bread volume was obtained for several cultivars from this sample set. This suggests that optimizing water absorption for mixing doughs to achieve maximal bread volume compensates for the wide range of viscoelastic behaviors of gluten.  相似文献

Despite the great variety of physicochemical and rheological tests available for measuring wheat flour, dough and gluten quality, the US wheat marketing system still relies primarily on wheat kernel hardness and growing season to categorize cultivars. To better understand and differentiate wheat cultivars of the same class, the tensile strength, and stress relaxation behavior of gluten from 15 wheat cultivars was measured and compared to other available physicochemical parameters, including but not limited to protein content, glutenin macropolymer content (GMP) and bread loaf volume. In addition, a novel gluten compression–relaxation (Gluten CORE) instrument was used to measure the degree of elastic recovery of gluten for 15 common US wheat cultivars. Gluten strength ranged from 0.04 to 0.43 N at 500% extension, while the degree of recovery ranged from 5 to 78%. Measuring gluten strength clearly differentiated cultivars within a wheat class; nonetheless it was not a good predictor of baking quality on its own in terms of bread volume. Gluten strength was highly correlated with mixograph mixing times (r = 0.879) and degree of recovery (r = 0.855), suggesting that dough development time was influenced by gluten strength and that the CORE instrument was a suitable alternative to tensile testing, since it is less time intensive and less laborious to use.  相似文献

The late-season foliar application of urea may increase yield and grain quality of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Limited information is available regarding the effect of late urea spraying on the performance of wheat cultivars under various basal N fertilization rates. Field experiments were conducted during 2000 through 2002 to evaluate the responses of six winter wheat cultivars to foliar urea (30 kg N ha−1) treatment around flowering at low (67 kg N ha−1) and high (194 kg N ha−1) basal N fertilization rates. Following urea spraying at low N rate, all cultivars increased grain yields to a similar extent (by an average of 7.8% or 509 kg ha−1) primarily due to an increase in the 1000-kernel weight. No yield response to the late-season urea treatment occurred at high basal N rate where grain yields averaged 24.9% (1680 kg ha−1) higher than those at low N rate. In contrast, late foliar urea application similarly improved grain quality at both low and high N rates by an average of 5 g kg−1 (4.5%) for protein content, 3.2 cm3 (11.9%) for Zeleny sedimentation, and 20 g kg−1 (8.6%) for wet gluten. These quality increments were consistent in all growing seasons regardless of significant variations in grain yields and protein concentrations across years. However, most cultivars failed to achieve breadmaking standards at low N rate as quality increments associated with the urea treatment were relatively small when compared to those achieved by high basal N rate. Late urea spraying had no effect on the falling number, whereas some cultivars showed small, but significant reduction in the gluten index at both N rates. Cultivars improved the hectolitre weight with the late-season urea treatment only at low N rate. Significant cultivar × urea interactions existed for most quality traits, which were due to the cultivar differences in the magnitude of responses. Thus, late-season urea spraying consistently produced larger yields at low basal N rate, and resulted in cultivar-dependent increases in protein content, Zeleny sedimentation, and wet gluten at both low and high N rates.  相似文献

Field experiments were carried out to study grain yield, zinc (Zn) efficiency and concentrations of Zn in shoot and grain of 37 bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) and three durum wheat (Triticum durum) cultivars grown in a Zn-deficient calcareous soil with (23 kg Zn ha−1), and without, Zn fertilization in 1993–1994 and 1994–1995. The same Zn-deficient soil was used in greenhouse experiments to study shoot dry weight, Zn efficiency and shoot Zn concentrations of 21 bread and three durum wheat cultivars (same cultivars used in the field experiments). Zinc fertilization of cultivars in the field enhanced grain yield on average by 30% in both years. Increases in grain yield to Zn fertilization varied substantially between cultivars from 8% to 76%. Accordingly, there was large variability in Zn efficiency of cultivars, expressed as the ratio of grain yield or shoot dry-matter yield produced under Zn deficiency compared to that under Zn fertilization. On average, Zn efficiency values ranged from 57% to 92% for grain yield in field experiments and from 47% to 83% for shoot dry weight in greenhouse experiments. Most of the cultivars behaved similarly in their response to Zn deficiency in the field and greenhouse. The cultivars selected from local landraces had both, a high Zn efficiency and high yield under Zn-deficient conditions. The bread wheat cultivars, improved for irrigated conditions, had generally low Zn efficiency and low yield, both in the field and greenhouse. All durum wheat cultivars in this study also showed low levels of Zn efficiency, grain yield and shoot dry weight under Zn deficiency. Overall, there was no relation between Zn efficiency values and Zn concentrations in grain or shoot dry matter. The results presented here demonstrate the existence of substantial variation in Zn efficiency among wheat cultivars, particularly bread wheat cultivars, and suggest that wheat landrace populations are a valuable source of genes to improve high Zn efficiency of wheat for Zn-deficient soils.  相似文献

The study was undertaken to assess the variation within a bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar, primarily for grain yield, and the implications for wheat breeding. During the 1998–1999 growing season, cv. Nestos was established in a non-replicated (NR-0) honeycomb experiment, in the absence of competition (11 547 plants ha−1). Ten high yielding (H) and 10 low yielding (L) plants were selected, the seeds of which were used to form the respective H and L lines. The 20 lines, along with their original cultivar, were evaluated in two locations either in the absence of competition (11 547 plants ha−1) during the 1999–2000 season or under competition (5 000 000 plants ha−1) during the 2000–2001 season. Results showed significant differentiation between lines for grain yield, determined both in the absence of competition at the single-plant level, i.e. yield per plant (YP), and under competition at the crop yield level, i.e. yield per plot (CY). Significant differences between lines were also found for grain protein content (PC), grain carbon isotope discrimination (Δ), and grain ash content (ASH), either in the absence of competition or under competition. A positive relationship was found between YP and CY (r=0.53,P<0.02). Results showed that selection within a bread wheat cultivar, under very low density and on the basis of individual plant grain yield, could be an effective way to either upgrade or maintain the cultivar, whereas the use of Δ or ASH as indirect selection criteria instead of grain yield was not supported by the study.  相似文献

Osmotic adjustment (OA) is generally considered an important component of drought resistance. Several reports by J.M. Morgan [Morgan, J.M., 1983. Plant Physiol. 13, 523–532] from Australia concluded that consistent genetic differences in OA existed among wheat cultivars and that high OA cultivars tended to yield better than low OA cultivars under drought stress. Our study was performed to assess his results with his and other genetic materials.Two of Morgan’s spring wheat lines with high OA (‘H.Osm-134’) and low OA (‘L.Osm-136’) capacity in addition to eight other diverse spring wheat cultivars were tested for OA and plant production when grown in small plots under a rain exclusion shelter at Bet Dagan, Israel in 1996. OA of five of these cultivars (including Morgan’s lines) was also measured in two independent greenhouse tests in 1997 (Israel) and 1998 (Texas).The five cultivars differed significantly and ranked consistently for OA in all tests. No significant cultivar by test interaction for OA was revealed. OA was well correlated across cultivars between tests. The significantly higher OA capacity of H.Osm-134 as compared with L.Osm-136 was repeated in all tests. OA of all ten cultivars was positively correlated with biomass (r = 0.73; p = 0.02) and yield (r = 0.55; p = 0.09) under pre-flowering drought stress in the rain exclusion shelter. H.Osm-134 line performed significantly (p  0.05) better than L.Osm-136 line for both biomass and yield under drought stress. We therefore support Morgan’s results and conclude that consistent differences in OA exist among wheat cultivars and that these differences can be associated with plant production under pre-flowering drought stress.  相似文献

Structure and health effects of inulin-type fructans have been extensively studied, while less is known about the properties of the graminan-type fructans in wheat. Arabinoxylan (AX) is another important indigestible component in cereal grains, which may have beneficial health effects. In this study, the fructan content in milling fractions of two wheat cultivars was determined and related to ash, dietary fibre and AX contents. The molecular weight distribution of the fructans was analysed with HPAEC-PAD and MALDI-TOF MS using 1H NMR and enzymatic hydrolysis for identification of fructans. The fructan content (g/100 g) ranged from 1.5 ± 0.2 in flour to 3.6 ± 0.5 in shorts and 3.7 ± 0.3 in bran. A correlation was found between fructan content and dietary fibre content (r = 0.93, P < 0.001), but with a smaller variation in fructan content between inner and outer parts of the grain. About 50% of the dietary fibre consisted of AX in all fractions. The fructans were found to have a DP of up to 19 with a similar molecular weight distribution in the different fractions.  相似文献

Timely sowing is critical for achieving high grain yields in winter cereals. However, inadequate seed-zone moisture for germination commonly delays sowing to reduce biomass and subsequent yield in semi-arid environments. Sowing deep to reach soil moisture is often avoided by growers of Rht-B1b and Rht-D1b semi-dwarf wheat as these wheat show poor emergence when sown deep. Their reduced cell elongation associated with insensitivity to endogenous gibberellins, results in shorter coleoptiles and smaller early leaf area. Alternative dwarfing genes responsive to endogenous gibberellins (e.g. Rht8) are available for use in wheat breeding. These reduce plant height without affecting coleoptile length and offer potential to select longer coleoptile wheat for deep sowing. Nine semidwarf (Rht8, Rht-B1b, and Rht-D1b) and seven tall (rht) wheat genotypes were sown at depths of 50, 80 and 110 mm at three locations in 2 or 3 years. Coleoptile lengths measured in a growth cabinet at four temperatures (11, 15, 19 and 23 °C) were strongly correlated with coleoptile length (rp = 0.77–0.79**) and plant number (rp = 0.49*–0.79**) in deep-sown plots in the field. Furthermore, differences in coleoptile length were genetically correlated with greater numbers of emerged seedlings (rg = 0.97**), shallower crown depth (−0.58**), greater seedling leaf area (0.59**) and seedling biomass (0.44*). Wheat containing the Rht-B1b or Rht-D1b dwarfing genes produced significantly (P < 0.01) shorter coleoptiles (97 mm) than both Rht8 (118 mm) and tall (117 mm) wheat. In turn, compared with emergence from 50 mm depth, the Rht-B1b and Rht-D1b wheat produced significantly fewer seedlings at 110 mm sowing depth (−62%) than either Rht8 (−41%) or tall (−37%) wheat. Effects of deep sowing early in the season were maintained with reductions in spike number and biomass at both anthesis and maturity. Kernel number was also reduced with deep sowing leading to reductions in grain yield. Over all entries, genotypic increases in plant number were associated with increases in fertile spike (rg = 0.61**) and kernel number (0.21*), total biomass (0.26*) and grain yield (0.28*). Reduction in spike number and grain yield with deep sowing was smallest for the Rht8 (−18 and −10%) and rht (−15 and −7%) wheat, and largest for the Rht-B1b/D1b (−39 and −16%) wheat. Plant height and coleoptile length were independent among Rht8 and tall wheat genotypes. This study demonstrates the importance of good seedling emergence in achieving high wheat yields, and the potential use of alternative dwarfing genes such as Rht8 in development of long coleoptile, reduced height wheat suitable for deep sowing.  相似文献

The present work aims to study the influence of reducing agents of sodium bisulfite, sodium sulfite and thioglycolic acid on the equibiaxial extensional deformation of glycerol plasticized wheat gluten and the properties of gluten bioplastics thermo-molded at 125 °C. Moisture absorption, weight loss and water uptake, uniaxial tensile properties (Young's modulus, tensile strength, elongation at break and tensile set), and morphology observations were performed to characterize the physical properties of the thermo-molded gluten bioplastics. The results showed that reducing agents facilitated the viscous flow and restrained the elastic recovery of the plasticized gluten while not hindering the crosslinking reaction of gluten proteins during thermo-molding. On the contrary, reducing agents do not significantly influence moisture absorption, Young's modulus, tensile strength and the morphology of the gluten bioplastics thermo-molded at 125 °C. It is shown that reducing agents are highly effective for tailoring the flow viscosity of the plasticized gluten dough and the mechanical properties of thermo-molded gluten bioplastics.  相似文献

An inverse relationship between soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seed protein and oil concentration is well documented in the literature. A negative correlation between protein and yield is also often reported. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of high rates of N applied at planting on seed protein and oil. Nitrogen was surface-applied at soybean emergence at rates of 290 kg ha−1 in 2002, 310 kg ha−1 in 2003, and 360 kg ha−1 in 2004. Eight cultivars ranging from Maturity Group II–IV were evaluated under the Early Soybean Production System (ESPS). However, not all cultivars were evaluated in all 3 years. Glyphosate herbicide was used in all 3 years and a non-glyphosate herbicide treatment was applied in 2002. Cultivars grown in 2003 were also evaluated under an application of 21.3 kg ha−1 of Mn. All cultivar, herbicide, and Mn treatments were evaluated in irrigated and non-irrigated environments with fertilizer N (PlusN treatment) or without fertilizer N (ZeroN treatment). When analyzed over all management practices (years, cultivars, herbicide, and Mn treatments), the PlusN treatment resulted in a significant decrease in protein concentration (2.7 and 1.9%), an increase in oil concentration (2.2 and 2.7%), and a decrease in the protein/oil ratio (4.7 and 4.6%) for the irrigated and non-irrigated environments, respectively. However, the overall protein and oil yield increased with the application of fertilizer N at planting (protein: 5.0% irrigated, 12.7% non-irrigated and oil: 9.9% irrigated and 18.9% non-irrigated). These increases were due to the increase in seed yield with the application of large amounts of fertilizer at planting. Additionally, a significant correlation (r = 0.45, P = 0.0001) was found between seed protein concentration and seed yield. No significant correlation was found between seed oil concentration and seed yield. The data demonstrate the inverse relationship between protein and oil and indicate that large amounts of N applied at planting do not change this relationship.  相似文献

Malnutrition related to micronutrient deficiency can create immense economic and societal problems. The objective of this study was to quantify the mineral element concentration distribution in milled fractions, using 43 common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars sown in Jinan, China during the 2005–2006 crop season. All 43 cultivars had low Fe (average 28.2 mg Kg−1) and Zn (28.6 mg Kg−1) concentrations, and wide ranges of variation for mineral element concentrations. Highly significant effects among milling fractions and cultivars on all traits were observed, with fraction effect being the larger. There was an uneven distribution of mineral element concentrations in wheat grain. Shorts and bran fractions had the highest mineral element concentrations, whereas flours from break and reduction had low concentrations. Compared with those in the central endosperm, the concentration of inorganic phosphorus (Pi) decreased the most with decreasing flour yield, whereas the concentration of phytic acid P (PAP), phytase activity, and Ca decreased the least. Pi was the most concentrated element in the aleurone, whereas PAP, phytase activity, and Ca were the least, compared to those in the central endosperm. Milling technique through adjusting flour yield can be used to improve the element composition of flour.  相似文献

Glutens derived from two wheat cultivars with a known difference in bread making quality, i.e. cv. Katepwa (good) and cv. Obelisk (poor), were fractionated into gliadin and glutenin. Cultivar Katepwa gluten contained more glutenin than cv. Obelisk gluten. Reconstituted glutens were prepared by mixing, in different ratios, gliadin and glutenin fractions that originated from one gluten type or from both glutens. The rheological properties of these mixtures, when hydrated, were studied at small deformations in shear and at large deformations in biaxial extension. The reconstitution of gluten in its original glutenin/gliadin ratio produced a composite that had a somewhat higher resistance to deformation and was more elastic than the unfractionated gluten. This was true for both gluten types. However, the difference between the rheological behaviour of both reconstituted gluten types was comparable with that found between the native glutens. From measurements with glutens reconstituted at various glutenin/gliadin ratios, it appeared that the main factor determining the rheological behaviour of hydrated gluten is the glutenin/gliadin ratio. By interchanging the gliadin and glutenin fractions of the two glutens, it was shown that the source from which the fractions originated, particularly that of the glutenin fraction, was also important.  相似文献

The effect of redox reactions catalysed by lactobacilli on properties of wheat gluten was followed during sourdough fermentations. Thiol levels in doughs remained high in doughs fermented with Lactobacillus sanfranciscensis or in chemically acidified doughs to which 10 μmol g–1 glutathione were added. In chemically acidified doughs or sourdoughs fermented with L. sakei or L. perolens, the thiol levels decreased during fermentation. Thiol-groups in gluten proteins were estimated by RP-HPLC separation of DAC-maleimide-labeled, propanol-soluble proteins extracted from wheat doughs. An increase of the SH groups in gluten proteins was observed in protein fractions from sourdoughs fermented with L. sanfranciscensis but not from chemically acidified doughs. A glutathione-reductase was expressed in L. sanfranciscensis and during its growth in sourdough resulted in the reduction of extracellular GSSG to GSH. It was concluded that in addition to the pH-dependent activity of cereal proteases, redox reactions catalysed by lactobacilli determine gluten quality during sourdough fermentations. The formation of thiols by L. sanfranciscensis interferes with gluten polymerisation. Due to differences in their central carbon metabolism, homo- or facultative hetero-fermentative lactobacilli have opposite effects on redox-reactions in wheat doughs.  相似文献

The sustainability of cropping systems can be increased by introducing a cover crop, provided that the cover crop does not reduce the cash crop yield through competition. The cover crop may be sown at the same time as a cash crop in the crop rotation. We carried out an experiment in 1999–2000 and 2000–2001 in the Paris Basin, to analyze the effects of simultaneously sowing winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and red fescue (Festuca rubra L.), a turf grass. Competition between wheat and fescue was analyzed with one variety of red fescue, Sunset, and two varieties of wheat, Isengrain and Scipion, each sown at a density of 150 plants m?2. In this study, we evaluated the effect of undersown fescue on wheat yield and analyzed the competition between the two species in detail. The undersown red fescue decreased wheat yield by about 12% for Isengrain (8.7 t ha?1 for undersown Isengrain versus 9.8 t ha?1 for Isengrain alone) and 7% for Scipion (7.4 t ha?1 for undersown Scipion versus 8.0 t ha?1 for Scipion alone). During the early stages of wheat growth (up to the ‘1 cm ear’ stage, corresponding to stage 30 on Zadoks’ scale), undersown fescue and fescue sown alone grew similarly. However, fescue biomass levels were much lower (5.6 and 4.7 g m?2 for fescue grown alone and undersown fescue) than wheat biomass levels on the undersown plots (120 g m?2 for Isengrain and 111 g m?2 for Scipion). From the e1 stage onwards, the wheat canopy rapidly extended, whereas that of red fescue remained sparse. The time lag between the beginning of the rapid increase in LAI and PAR interception by wheat grown alone and that for fescue grown alone was 590 dd in the second year. This resulted in much slower growth rates for undersown fescue than for undersown wheat. Biomass production rate was therefore low for undersown fescue (12% those of fescue grown alone, on average, at the time of wheat harvest), as were levels of water and nitrogen use. Neither the water deficit that occurred during the second experiment nor the nitrogen nutrition status of the wheat on plots with undersown fescue significantly affected wheat biomass production after anthesis.The global interception efficiency index IG?i indicated that the fraction of the PARo intercepted by the wheat during its growth (255 days) was 0.35.  相似文献

Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) seedlings compete poorly against the rapid growth of warm-season annual weeds. Weed control is required before this heat and drought-tolerant legume can be reliably grown in the U.S. southern Great Plains as a potential source of livestock hay between annual plantings of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Currently, no herbicides are labeled for use on pigeon pea grown in the U.S. Three years of replicated field experiments were conducted to determine the effects of applications (1× and 2× rates) of herbicides (pre-emergence, sulfentrazone + chlorimuron and metribuzin; post-emergence, imazapic and sethoxydim) on weed suppression, pigeon pea dry matter, and carry-over effects on a winter wheat crop. The most abundant summer weeds were broadleaf, and all herbicide treatments, except sethoxydim (grass herbicide), reduced weed densities compared to untreated plots without adversely affecting pigeon pea stands. Imazapic treatments provided the most effective weed control. Overall average pigeon pea dry matter ranged from 75 to 256 g m−2 with sethoxydim and the untreated control  metribuzin  sulfentrazone + chlorimuron  hand weeded control  imazapic. Compared to the hand-weeded control, imazapic treatments greatly reduced wheat dry matter (1×, 65% and 2×, 91%) and grain yield (1×, 59% and 2×, 93%). Imazapic should not be used unless nontransgenic imidazolinone herbicide tolerant wheat cultivars are planted. While the other herbicides decreased negative effects of weeds on pigeon pea dry matter without greatly affecting productivity of a following wheat crop, appropriate labels for each of these herbicides will be required prior to their use by southern Great Plains pigeon pea producers.  相似文献

Three different experiments were designed to study the effects of N fertilizer rate, timing and splitting, and the response to combined application of N and S fertilizer on the bread-making quality of hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) over a 3-year period in Vertisols under rainfed Mediterranean conditions. The following parameters were analyzed: grain yield, test weight, grain protein content, gluten index and alveograph parameters (W: alveogram index; P: dough tenacity; L: dough extensibility; P/L: tenacity–extensibility ratio). The N rate experiment included rates of 0, 100, 150 and 200 kg N ha−1 applied on four different sites. The experiment was designed as a randomized complete block with four blocks. For the experiment on N timing and splitting, a single rate of 150 kg N ha−1 was used, different fractions being applied at sowing, tillering and stem elongation, at a single site; again, experimental design was a randomized complete block with four blocks. Finally, for the experiment on the response to combined application of N and S fertilizer, a single fertilizer dose of 150 kg N ha−1 was applied in two forms (urea+ammonium nitrate and urea+ammonium nitrosulfate) with one leaf application at ear emergence (zero, 25 kg S ha−1, 25 kg N ha−1, 25kgSha−1+25 kg N ha−1 and 50 kg N ha−1), also at a single site, using a split-plot design with four replications. Year-on-year variation in rainfall led to marked variations in wheat yield, grain protein content and bread-making quality indices. A close correlation was observed between rainfall over the September–May period and both grain yield and grain protein content (optimum values for both being recorded in the rainfall range 500–550 mm) as well as the alveogram index. A negative correlation was observed between mean maximum temperatures in May and both test weight and alveogram index (W). N fertilizer rate had a more consistent effect on bread-making quality than on grain yield. The highest values for grain yield were recorded at an N rate of 100 kg ha−1, while maximum grain protein content values were recorded at 150 kg ha−1. Application of half or one-third of total fertilizer N at stem elongation improved grain yield and grain protein content with respect to applications at sowing alone or at both sowing and tillering. Increased N rates led to a considerable increase in W values and to a reduction in the P/L ratio, thus improving dough balance, with a negative effect on the gluten index. Leaf application of N at ear emergence only affected grain protein content and the W index. Soil or leaf application of S had no effect on protein quality indices. The response of grain yield and grain protein content to fertilizer N differed from that reported for temperate climates.  相似文献

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seed is a major source of protein for animal feed and oil for human consumption. Selection within elite soybean cultivars for the improvement of agronomic and seed traits is assumed to be ineffective due to the belief that cultivars are highly homogeneous. Previously reported data suggest that latent variation among the single plant selections within a cultivar exists and that mechanisms that generate de novo variation may also be present. The main objective of this study was to perform divergent single-plant selection at ultra-low plant density and investigate the presence of genetic variation for seed protein and oil within three elite soybean cultivars. A secondary objective was to investigate the variation for fatty acid composition. In 1995, single plants from the three cultivars were grown in a honeycomb design using a plant-to-plant spacing of 0.9 m. A total of 333 plants from ‘Benning’, 392 plants from ‘Haskell’, and 371 plants from ‘Cook’ were evaluated. Divergent single-plant selection for protein and oil content was performed to select a total of 20 plants for high or low protein and 20 plants for high or low oil from each cultivar. The selected plants were further evaluated in replicated row-plot experiments for 3 years. Our results indicate that single-plant selection at low plant density was successful in discovering significant variation for seed protein and oil within each of the three soybean cultivars. For protein content, the magnitude of intra-cultivar variation between the highest- and lowest-protein lines averaged 19 g kg−1 across the three cultivars and ranged from 13 to 24 g kg−1. For oil composition, the magnitude of variation between the most divergent lines averaged 12 g kg−1 across the three cultivars and ranged from 9 to 14 g kg−1. Significant variation among the selected progeny lines was also discovered for specific fatty acid composition. The magnitude of intra-cultivar variation averaged from 6 to 29 g kg−1 across the five fatty acids of soybean. The genetic variation discovered within the soybean cultivars is most likely due to latent variation and/or newly created variation. Our data provide evidence that single-plant selection at ultra-low plant density within elite cultivars can be effective in improving the seed composition of a soybean cultivar.  相似文献

One hundred and ninety-two wheat genotypes including 150 released varieties and 42 germplasm lines were evaluated for solvent retention capacity (SRC) tests using 1 g of flour and 1 g of wholemeal to determine relationships with mixing properties of their doughs. Strong positive correlations (p<0.001) were observed between different SRCs (using both wholemeal as well as flour) and Farinograph water absorption (FWA). In multiple regression analysis, flour water SRC explained 41.2%, sodium carbonate SRC 24.6%, sucrose SRC 20.7% and protein content 13.5% of the total variability (multiple r=0.91) in FWA. The data demonstrated that water absorption is governed mainly to starch damage and pentosan content of the flour. Based on multiple regression analysis an equation was developed to predict FWA and a very high positive correlation (r=0.91) was observed between predicted FWA and actual FWA. LASRC exhibited significant positive correlations (p<0.001) with Farinograph and Mixograph parameters related to gluten strength such as the Farinograph peak time and mixing tolerance index and the mixograph peak time and peak dough resistance. Wholemeal flour SRCs accounted for 48% of the variation in FWA and was highly significant (p<0.001). The average values of FWA of corresponding clusters made using wholemeal and flour SRCs were not significantly different. This demonstrates that wholemeal SRCs together with grain protein content can be used to screen early generation lines for FWA. Since large numbers of diverse genotypes were used in the estimation of various parameters, high correlations observed between SRCs and functional properties including water absorption have obvious implications in breeding programs for the improvement of wheat cultivars.  相似文献

The genetic control determining the days to flowering, defined as the number of days from emergence to the beginning of flowering is considered an important characteristic for breeding purpose. We investigated this factor in kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.), as part of an agroindustrial project in northwest Argentina. A diallelic cross approach was considered in this study. Six highly inbred photosensitive cultivars were used in the cross, namely, Endora, Pandora, Tainung 1, Line 42, Line 21, and Line 29. Significant differences among F1 family means as well as among general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) components were found based on the Griffing genetic-statistical method IV, Model 1. A predominant additive effect was detected for the days to flowering, giving high heritability estimates (H = DGD = 0.96; h2 = 0.69), and suggests the possibility of effective selection for earliness in these cultivars. Early flowering in Line 29 was highly heritable, and therefore, is important for breeding purposes. Line 42, despite being the earliest, did not transmit this characteristic to its progenies, possibly because of epistatic genetic effects. The regression of the covariances of F1 families on the non-recurrent parent (Wr) and the variance of the “n” families (Vr) revealed that some dominance effects also occurred in the form of a partial dominance for early flowering. These results support the evidences revealed by the analysis of means of combinations between early and late flowering lines.  相似文献
