Field tests were conducted to determine the effectiveness of wheat bran baits based onSteinernema feltiae compared to the pathogenBacillus thuringiensis and the organophosphorus compound hostathion againstAgrotis ipsilon infesting Okra,Hibiscus esculentis cultivations. Significant larval reduction was observed in all treated plots after application with a significant increase in the yield compared to the control plots. The sugar beet weevil, Bothynoderes punctiventris Germ. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is one of the most damaging pests of sugar beets in Turkey and has been traditionally controlled by application of large amounts of insecticides. The current study used laboratory microcosms to evaluate the possibility of using entomopathogenic nematodes as an alternative control method. The nematodes Steinernema feltiae (strain TUR-S3), Steinernema weiseri (BEY) and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (TUR-H2) had previously been isolated from Turkey. Nematode-induced mortality generally increased as soil temperature increased from 15 to 25°C but decreased when larvae were located deeper in soil. Heterorhabditis bacteriophora caused the highest larval mortality at 25°C at all depths (5–20 cm). Steinernema feltiae and S. weiseri were more effective than H. bacteriophora at 15°C at all depths. Increasing the application rate of infective nematode dauer juveniles (DJs) affected the number of DJs that penetrated each insect larva and the number of DJs produced per insect. The highest production of DJs per larva occurred at application rates of 50 DJs/larva for S. feltiae and S. weiseri and 100 DJs/larva for H. bacteriophora. Reproduction decreased again at higher application rates. Heterorhabditis bacteriophora had the highest reproductive capability. The results indicate that S. feltiae and S. weiseri might be more effective against this pest early in the growing season when soil temperature is low and that H. bacteriophora might be more effective later in the season when temperature increases.  相似文献

Sugar beet, Beta vulgaris L. is a strategic crop of sugar industry in Egypt. It is threatened by several insect pests among most important of them is the beet beetle Cassida vittata. This work deals with the biological control of this insect using four Egyptian and imported entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs). The nematodes included Steinernema carpocapsae S2, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora S1, S. feltiae and H. bacteriophora (1-3). Daily mortality of larvae, pupae and adults of C. vittata were recorded after treatment with serial concentrations (from 500 to 4,000 infective juveniles/ml) of each of four studied EPNs. Development of nematodes in insect bodies was followed up. S. carpocapsae S2 was chosen for the application against different stages of the pest in a sugar beet field. In the field, single application of S. carpocapsae S2 killed 65% of the larvae, 92% of the pupae and 57.3% of the adults of C. vittata within a week. This work is the first report on using the EPNs to control sugar beet beetle.  相似文献

The efficacies of four strains of entomopathogenic nematodes on infecting and killingSpodoptera littoralis were tested in the laboratory concerning soil temperature, nematode dose and emergence from the insect cadavers. All the tested nematodes attained almost 100% insect mortality at 4, 10 and 25 °C but at 35 °C,Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (HP88) achieved the least (64%). As soil temperature rise to 35 °C, the most adversely affected nematode in terms of recycling efficiency wasH. bacteriophora (EASD98) followed bySteinernema riobravis, H. bacteriophora (HP88) and finallyH. indicus (EAS59). Although all nematodes could infect and kill the host insects at 35 °C, those ofH. bacteriophora (EASD98) could not emerge from the cadavers. Differences in the numbers of emerging infective juveniles as related to nematode concentration and different degrees of soil temperatures were obvious and may be considered in developing a biocontrol strategy for the management of the cotton leaf-worm.With 4 tablesThis research was supported by the NARP project No. H-035 and is a part of a M. The use of biological control in turf has increased to avoid possible negative effects on humans. Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) belonging to the families Steinernematidae and Heterorhabditidae have control potential against many economically important insect pests. In the present study, the efficacy of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora against a new pest on turf, Dorcadion pseudopreissi, was examined in the field. Cages (1 × 1 × 1 m) with female and male D. pseudopreissi were placed on two kinds of turf: Lolium perenne and Festuca arundinacea. After beetles had deposited eggs into the moist soil surface, the cages were removed and H. bacteriophora was applied at 0.5 million infective juveniles/m2 to half the plots. Application of H. bacteriophora caused a statistically significant reduction in numbers of beetle larvae in L. perenne plots and a non-significant reduction in F. arundinacea plots. The area damaged by D. pseudopreissi was significantly reduced by nematode application in both turf species. The number of nematodes declined after application, but small numbers could still be detected after 6 months.  相似文献

Weekly samples of the cutworm,Agrotis ipsilon Rott. larvae were collected for 3 successive season 1983/84–1985/86 from 3 Governorates in middle Egypt to survey and evaluate the role of parasitoids in suppressing the pest population.Two gregarious internal larval parasitoids were recorded,Apanteles ruficrus Hal. andMeteorus rubens Nees. (Hymenoptera, Braconidae). Percentages of parasitism were estimated. They reached 20.2, 22.2 and 24.7% in seasons 1983/84, 1984/85 and 1985/86, respectively, with an average of 22.5% (10.3%A. ruficrus and 12.2%M. rubens). The highest rates of parasitism were recorded in March and April.
Zusammenfassung Wöchentliche Aufsammlungen der Raupen vonA. ipsilon während der Jahre 1983/84 bis 1985/86 im mittleren Ägypten erbrachten zwei gregäre Endoparasitoiden,Apanteles ruficrus Hal. undMeteorus rubens Nees. (beide Hym., Braconidae). Sie erreichen zusammen in den 3 Jahren 20,2, 22,2 und 24,7%, i.M. 22,5% (A. ruficrus=10,3%, undM. rubens=12,2%). Die höchsten Parasitierungsraten wurden im März und April festgestellt.

Nine isolates ofBacillus thuringiensis Berliner belonging to var.kenyae, var.aizawai and var.entomocidus, were bioassayed against 1st instar larvae ofBoarmia (Ascotis) selenaria Schiffermüller and compared withB. thuringiensis var.kurstaki, HD-1-S-1980. Field tests were conducted to determine the effectiveness of wheat-brain baits based onBacillus thuringiensis var.kurstaki HD-1 (dipel 2x) compared to the organophosphorous insecticide Hostathion against the greasy cutwormAgrotis ypsilon infestations on horse bean (Vicia fabae) cultivations. Significant larval reductions were observed in all treated plots after one application with a significant increase in the yield (1.45–1.60 folds) compared to the control plots. The yield was not obviously affected by varying the dose of dipel in the bait between 150–250 g/feddan. The addition of the adjuvant potassium carbonate to the dipel bait caused a significant larval reduction, 10 days after application and showed to be as efficient as baits based on Hostathion.  相似文献

Ten Egyptian and imported entomopathogenic nematodes were evaluated for their pathogenicity to R. ferrugineus in both the laboratory and the field. In the laboratory, most nematodes were pathogenic to the pest larvae, pupae and adults. Larvae and adults were more susceptible to nematode infection (mostly 100?% mortality) than pupae enclosed in their cocoons. In the field however, the highest insect larval mortality was 66.67?% and most of nematodes failed in controlling the pest. Such failure could be due to hot weather, the tunnelling behaviour of the pest larvae and the too much sap in the infested sites in the trunks of palm trees.  相似文献

Small hive beetles, Aethina tumida Murray, are parasites and scavengers of honeybee colonies, Apis mellifera L., and have become an invasive species that can cause considerable damage in its new distribution areas. An effective subspecies of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (=Bt) would provide an alternative to chemical control of this pest. Therefore, we tested three different Bt strains [B. thuringiensis, var. aizawai (B401®), B. thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Novodor®) and B. thuringiensis var. San Diego tenebrionis (Jackpot®)] and Perizin® (3.2% coumaphos), each applied on combs with a pollen diet fed to pairs of adult beetles. This evaluates the products for the suppression of successful small hive beetle reproduction. While none of the tested Bt strains showed a significant effect on the number of produced wandering larvae, we could confirm the efficacy of coumaphos for the control of small hive beetles. We further show that it is also efficient when applied with a lower concentration as a liquid on the combs. We suggest the continued search for efficient Bt strains naturally infesting small hive beetles in its endemic and new ranges, which may become a part of the integrated management of this pest.  相似文献

Shellac was evaluated as radiation protection for the bacteriumBacillus thuringiensis var.entomocidus againstSpodoptera littoralis larvae. Shellac provided excellent protection toB. thuringiensis. The efficacy of shellac in the protection of entomocidal activity ofB. thuringiensis var.entomocidus against UV irradiation has been studied. Results obtained by the absorbtion and the bioassay of residual entomocidal activity ofB. thuringiensis var.entomocidus after exposure to UV irradiation showed that shellac is an excellent photoprotective agent.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Die Virulenz von 13 Bacilluspr?paraten (2 Handelspr?parate vonBacillus thuringiensis var,thuringiensis Berliner und 11 Laboratoriums-Pr?parate von verschiedenen Arten und Variet?ten) gegen 3 ?gyptische Noctuiden (Agrotis ypsilon Rott.,Laphygma exigua Hbn. undProdenia litura Fab.) wurden untersucht. 50 Raupen von jeder Art (6–7 Tage alt) wurden für jede Behandlung und die Kontrolle verwendet (einen Tag auf behandeltes Laub vonTrifolium alexandrinum gesetzt). Die Resultate ergaben, da?Laphygma in 9 F?llen sehr empfindlich ist, wobei sich ein deutlicher Unterschied zu den beiden anderen Arten ergab. In 7 dieser F?lle folgte aufLaphygma Prodenia und in 2 F?lleAgrotis. Besonders wirksame Pr?parate waren: Biospor 2802 gegenLaphygma, Bacillus thuringiensis var.thuringiensis 2172 gegenProdenia undB. entomocidus var.subtoxicus 1179 gegenAgiotis. In den meisten F?llen wurde kein direkter Zusammenhang zwischen Virulenz und Zahl der lebenden Sporen gefunden.
Summary The virulence of 13 Bacillus preparations (2 commercial formulations ofBacillus thuringiensis var.thuringiensis Berliner and 11 laboratory preparations of different varieties and species) on 3 Egyptian noctuids (Agrotis ypsilon Rott.,Laphygma exigua Hbn. andProdenia litura Fab.) was tested. Fifty larvae of each species (6–7 days-old) were used for each treatment and for the control (one day voluntary ingestion on foliage ofTrifolium alexandrinum). Results revealed thatLaphygma is most susceptible in 9 cases with marked difference between it and both other species. In 7 of these casesLaphygma was followed byProdenia and in 2 cases byAgrotis. Most virulent preparations were: Biospore 2802 againstLaphygma, Bacillus thuringiensis var.thuringiensis 2172 againstProdenia andB. entomocidus var.subtoxicus 1179 againstAgrotis. In most cases no direct relationship was observed between virulence and number of viable spores in dose.

The efficacy of the commercial product Dipel 2X (Bacillus thuringiensis var.kurstaki), was assessed as a biological control means of the cotton leaf wormSpodoptera littoralis attacking clover cultivations (Trifolium alexandrinum) in Egypt. Field experiments using the biological agent were carried out in two localities as compared with the conventional chemical insecticide lannate. The percentage of reduction in the larval population increased at higher doses ofB. t. and the infestation levels reached very low levels, almost similar to those obtained after using lannate. The yield of the first cut of clover was estimated. The data obtained indicate that the yield significantly increased after treatment with eitherB. t. or lannate. In Menoufia, the yield was significantly higher after two successive spray applications withB. t. at 750 g/f compared to that obtained withB. t. when used at 500 g/f. In Giza Governorate, the yield was slightly higher after a single treatment withB. t. at 500 g/f as compared with lannate.  相似文献

Studies were made in 1998 and 1999 In an oak forest (“Meuenburger Holz”) in Northern Germany for the purpose of testing the effect of some insecticides on the soil fauna. The preparations “Fastac” (active agent:a-Cypermeth-rin) and “Foray 48 B” (active agent:Bacillus thuringiensis var.kurstaki) were used for the control of winter moths (Operopbthera brumata). The insects and spiders were caught using the following methods: soil samples, pitfalls and net sweeps. Bacillus thuringiensis is a major microbial insecticide and a source of genes encoding several proteins toxic to insects. In this paper the authors give a brief summary ofBacillus thuringiensis used on the integrated pest management in forestry. The derivatives of Bt strain HD1 subspkurstaki have been widely used to control the forest pests such as the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar), spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana), the pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa), the European pine shoot moth (Rhyacionia buoliana) and the nun moth (Lymantria monacha). Field trials were made on the efficacy of the new inhibitor of chitin synthesis in insects, Nomolt 15 SC with teflubenzuron as an effective substance, to larvae ofLymantria dispar, using Nomolt pure or in combination withBacillus thuringiensis. In further experiments another moulting inhibitor, Dimilin, was tested pure or in combination with the Bacillus. The mixture of Bathurin 82 S (Bac. thuring. var.kurstaki), 16 BIU/ha and Nomolt, 10 or 50 ml/ha proved to be very efficacious even during cold and rainy weather, when it showed 20% higher efficacy than the pure biopreparation. The combination with Nomolt as stressor proved to have higher selectivity and efficacy against the pest larvae than those with Dimilin.  相似文献

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to determine the possibility use of commercial bacterial pathogen insecticide,Bacillus thuringiensis, as biocontrol agent againstMeloidogyne javanica andTylenchulus semipenetrans nematodes.The obtained results indicate that the two strains ofB. thuringiensis suppressed the total nematode populations and eggmasses of the two nematode genera. Also, the two strains ofBacillus remarkably reduced the percentages of hatchability of eggs of the two nematode genera. SAN 415Bacillus strain was highly effective than Dipel strain and surpassed it in this respect, but it was approximately similar to the standard nematicide Nemacur.
Zusammenfassung Es wurde ein Gewächshaus-Versuch durchgeführt zur Untersuchung der Möglichkeit,Meloidogyne javanica undTylenchus semipenetrans (Nematoda) mittelsBac. thuringiensis biologisch zu bekämpfen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daßB. thuringiensis die Eigelege und die Populationsdichte beider Nematoden stark reduzierte. Auch wurde die Schlüpflähigkeit der Eier beider Nematodenarten durch Anwendung der zweiBacillus-Präparate deutlich verringert. Der SANBacillus-Stamm zeigte höhere, Wirkung als Dipel und entsprach etwa dem Standard-Nematizid Nemacur.

Six‐month‐old Japanese black pine seedlings (Pinus thunbergii) were exposed to simulated acid rain (SAR) at pH 3 and 2 three times a week. After treatment for 2 months, the seedlings were inoculated with a virulent isolate (S10) of the pinewood nematode (Bursaphelenchusxylophilus), at three inoculum levels (Pi = 50, 160 or 500 nematodes per seedling). In seedlings inoculated with 500 nematodes, both population growth of nematodes and disease development were accelerated by pretreatment with SAR at pH 3 or 2. In seedlings inoculated with 50 nematodes, population growth of the nematodes was suppressed and more time was needed for seedlings to die when pretreated with pH 3 SAR. This suggests that exposure to pH 3 SAR increased not only the progress of mortality, but also simultaneously enhanced the tolerance limit of the seedlings to the pinewood nematode – the critical value of physiological burden (represented as a product of time and initial nematode population) necessary to kill a seedling. Exposure to pH 2 SAR accelerated nematode reproduction in seedlings and increased seedling mortality irrespective of the number of nematodes inoculated.  相似文献

Simulated acid rain (SAR) at three pH levels (pH 4, 3, 2) was applied to only the top or both the top and roots of 4-month-old Japanese black pine seedlings repeatedly for two months. Then the seedlings were inoculated with a virulent isolate (S10) of pinewood nematode,Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. The exposure to SAR at any level did not kill the seedlings. When inoculated with nematodes, however, the nematode population build-up was significantly higher in the seedlings pretreated with SAR at any level than in the control at the 7th and 17th day after inoculation, and subsequent disease symptom development was also significantly accelerated by the exposure to SAR at pH 2 and 3. This result indicates that even acid rain at pH 4 has the potential for promoting population growth of pinewood nematodes in 4-month-old Japanese black pine seedlings.  相似文献

A study was made on the susceptibility of the cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Biosd.), to the nematode, Steinernema carpocapsae (All) and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora. Three concentrations of each nematode species were used (75, 150, and 300 infective juveniles) for each treatment. The nematode, H. bacteriophora, gave 100% mortality 96, 90, and 48 h, respectively, post-treatment of S. littoralis larvae with 75, 150, and 300 infective juveniles. On the other hand, S. carpocapsae (All) gave 100% mortality 120, 90, and 56 h post-treatment, respectively. Therefore, H. bacteriophora was more potent against cotton leafworm than S. carpocapsae. Studies on the infestation intensity of the nematode species against the cotton leafworm showed the predominance of H. bacteriophora over S. carpocapsae, while in studies of the reproductive rate those of S. carpocapsae predominate. The bacterial symbionts of each nematode species were isolated and tested alone against cotton leafworm at concentrations ranging between 1×102 and 5×103 bacterial cells/larva. The results showed a higher activity of Photorhabdus luminescens than that of Xenorhabdu nematophilus.  相似文献
