Visual-evoked potentials (VEP) and electroretinograms (ERG) were recorded from 10 normal light-adapted adult dogs, using a 3 x 5 matrix of light-emitting diodes as a stimulator. Visual-evoked potentials were recorded from 4 scalp electrodes overlying cortical areas, whereas electroretinographic activity was recorded by 2 scalp electrodes placed near the eye and by a conjunctivally placed electrode. The waveform of the VEP consisted of 3 major positive waves (P1 through P3), with peak latencies in the 20- to 70-ms range. Waveform reproducibility was assessed by comparing peak latencies from VEP recorded on 2 separate days approximately 1 week apart. The peak latencies for P1 through P3 did not differ (P greater than or equal to 0.05) between first and second recording sessions. To substantiate the postretinal origin of VEP, recordings were made before and after unilateral optic nerve transsections in 4 dogs. Electroretinograms were also measured before and after surgery to assess the integrity of the retina. Postsurgically, VEP were absent when the eye on the surgically treated side was stimulated. Stimulation of the contralateral eye induced VEP with the same waveform shape, but latencies were slightly prolonged (P less than or equal to 0.05) compared with presurgical recordings. The only effect of optic nerve transsection on the ipsilateral ERG was a prolongation (P less than or equal to 0.05) of the b-wave. However, when postsurgical ERG values were compared with those from the intact side after surgery, there were no differences.  相似文献

Noninvasive determination of anal and genitoanal reflexes was evaluated in clinically normal cats. Thirty adult mixed-breed cats (15 sexually intact or castrated males, 15 sexually intact or spayed females) were sedated by IV administration of ketamine, acetylpromazine, and atropine. Anal reflexes were recorded from the anal sphincter muscle after ipsilateral and contralateral electrical stimulation of the perineal skin. Genitoanal reflexes were recorded from the anal sphincter muscle after electrical stimulation of the penis or clitoris. An anal sphincter response to tibial nerve stimulation was attempted. Anal reflexes from ipsilateral and contralateral stimulations and a genitoanal reflex were detected in all cats. Anal sphincter responses to tibial nerve stimulation were inconsistent (4/30) and were not included in any analyses. Anal reflexes had response latencies of 7.5 to 12.0 ms (ipsilateral stimulation) and 6.5 to 13 ms (contralateral stimulation). Genitoanal reflexes had latencies of 9.0 to 13.0 ms (males) and 6.5 to 9.0 ms (females). Anal reflex latencies were significantly (P less than 0.05) longer for contralateral, opposed to ipsilateral, stimulation and were significantly (P less than 0.05) longer in males than in females. Genitoanal reflex latencies were also significantly (P less than 0.05) longer in males than in females, reflecting the more peripheral stimulation site in males. Anal reflex responses could be recorded in 2 feline clinic patients with such severe perineal trauma that pudendal nerve function could not be manually evaluated A potentially favorable prognosis was given in each instance on the basis of detection of the response. Visual evoked potentials by flash stimulation (flash VEP) were analyzed in dogs using a topographic method. The flash VEP consisted of 3 positive (P1, P2 and P3) and 2 negative (N1 and N2) components by 150 msec after the flash stimuli. On the topographic mappings, a negative response area was observed in the frontal region of the scalp in the stimulated site followed by the shifting of the area to the contralateral frontal region and occipital region, during the first 100 msec. The negative response area in the frontal region in the stimulated site, contralateral frontal and temporal region, and occipital region were corresponded to N1, P2, and N2 on the flash VEP, respectively, according to their latencies. In the dogs with experimentally impaired the right lateral geniculate body, the latency of P2 was prolonged, and N2 and P3 were disappeared after the left eye stimulation. On the topographic mapping, only the early negative response area was detected on the stimulated site of the frontal region of the brain. Therefore, it is concluded that P1 and N1, P2, and N2 are referred to the retinal potentials, the potentials from the retina to the brainstem included the lateral geniculate body, and those from the brainstem to the visual cortex, respectively.  相似文献

The acoustic reflex (AR) was recorded from 12 healthy mixed-breed dogs. Latency and amplitude were measured from ipsilateral and contralateral AR at stimulus frequencies of 1 and 2 kHz and intensities of 70 to 110 dB sound pressure level for ipsilateral AR and 70 to 120 dB hearing level for contralateral AR. Mean latencies for ipsilateral and contralateral AR were between 33.46 and 206.10 ms and between 45.26 and 180.89 ms, respectively, and amplitudes were between 0.14 and 1.79 cm3 and between 0.31 and 1.86 cm3 of air, respectively. Stimulus frequencies and intensities had significant effects (P less than 0.05) on ipsilateral and contralateral AR latencies and amplitudes. Ipsilateral and contralateral AR decays were determined by measuring compliance change during a 10-s pure-tone stimulation at frequencies of 1 and 2 kHz at an intensity of 10 dB above AR threshold. Reflex decays for 1 kHz and 2 kHz frequencies averaged 5.74% and 9.71%, respectively, for ipsilateral AR and 5.08% and 5.40%, respectively, for contralateral AR. Bilateral tympanograms and brain stem auditory-evoked responses were performed on each dog. Mean normal static compliance of the middle ear, as determined by tympanometry, was 0.15 cm3. Unilateral tenotomy of the tensor tympani muscle was done on 6 of the 12 dogs, and each of the preceding procedures were repeated within 1 week after surgical operation. Transection of the tensor tympani tendon did not alter (P greater than 0.05) the latencies or amplitudes of 1 kHz- or 2 kHz-evoked contralateral AR, the latency or amplitude of 1 kHz-evoked ipsilateral AR, or the amplitude of 2 kHz-evoked ipsilateral AR. However, the latency of 2 kHz-evoked ipsilateral AR was significantly (P less than 0.05) increased. Reflex decay increased significantly (P less than or equal to 0.001) for the contralateral reflex elicited by the 2 kHz stimulus. Neither compliance of the middle ear system nor amplitude and latency of the brain stem auditory-evoked response were affected (P greater than 0.05) by tenotomy. Since tenotomy eliminates participation of the tensor tympani in the AR, these data indicate that contraction of this muscle is not primarily responsible for the compliance changes recorded during an acoustic reflex in dogs.  相似文献

The neuroanatomy of the mammalian visual system has received considerable attention through electrophysiological study of cats and non-human primates, and through neuroimaging of humans. Canine neuroanatomy, however, has received much less attention, limiting our understanding of canine vision and visual pathways. As an early step in applying blood oxygenation level dependant (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) for veterinary use, we compared visual activity in the thalamus and occipital cortex of anesthetized dogs presented with binocular and monocular visual stimuli. Activity in the left and right thalamus and occipital cortex during monocular stimulation was also compared. Six beagles were presented with a vertical grating visual stimulus and scanned at 4 Tesla. Each dog was scanned twice under each of 3 anesthetic protocols (isoflurane, propofol, and fentanyl/midazolam). We found: 1) significant BOLD activation in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of the thalamus and the occipital cortex; 2) a significantly larger area of activation in the LGN during monocular stimulation than during binocular stimulation; and 3) that activity in the hemisphere contralateral to the stimulus was not significantly greater than that ipsilateral to it.  相似文献

The Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential (BAEP) is a recording of the electrical activity of the brainstem following an acoustic stimulation. Up to seven peaks may be identified within 10 ms, and are labelled I to VII. The first five of these peaks are of most clinical importance, and in normal horses, peaks I, III and V are always present at stimulus intensities of 70-100 dB. Repeated sampling of clinically normal subjects at different stimulus intensities has enabled mean latency values to be determined for the ipsilateral and contralateral peaks I, III and V, and also for the interpeak latencies (IPLs) at each intensity. The maximum, normal, absolute latency for ipsilateral peak I was 1.86 ms, for peak III, 3.53 ms and for peak V, 5.52 ms. The equivalent contralateral values were 2.50 ms, 4.44 ms and 5.59 ms. The maximum, normal, contralateral IPL for I-III was 1.78 ms, that for III-V was 2.26 ms and for I-V was 3.76 ms. The maximum, normal, contralateral IPLs were 2.17 ms for I-III, 1.41 ms for III-V and 3.32 ms for I-V. If a peak or peaks are absent or delayed, or the IPL is greater than expected, the patient can be determined to have abnormal brainstem or auditory nerve conduction. The amplitudes of peaks I and V were measured, and the ratio of amplitudes was determined, to find the normal V:I values. At a stimulus intensity of 100 dB, the ipsilateral ratio was 0.49 +/- 0.19, and the contralateral value 1.49 +/- 0.48. Dispersal values were also calculated, by dividing the height of the III-V complex by its duration. For a stimulus intensity of 100 dB, the ipsilateral dispersal value was 0.416 +/- 0.104 microV/ms, and the contralateral value of 0.473 +/- 0.074 microV/ms. A range of normal values for both V:I ratio and dispersal were calculated. Height, weight and inter-aural distance were measured, and the relationship of the various peaks and IPLs to these variables was ascertained by statistical analysis. For the ipsilateral values, the correlation between the latency of wave V, and III-V and I-V IPLs and weight were significant (P less than 0.01). Electroretinogram (ERG) and visual-evoked potential (VEP) recordings were taken from ten Suffolk-cross sheep. Stimuli for VEP were 1.5 flashes of white light/s; ERG stimuli were single flashes. The ERG measurements of the a and b wave latencies and a-to-b amplitude were measured between the lower eyelid and the vertex, with ground on the nuchal crest. The VEP after monocular stimulation were measured between the nuchal crest and the interorbital line, with ground on the vertex. Measurements consisted of the latencies to seven alternating positive and negative peaks P1, N1, P2, N2, P3, N3 and P4, and six amplitudes, P1-N1, N1-P2, P2-N2, N2-P3, P3-N3 and N3-P4. Average latencies for the a and b waves were 13.6 and 28.2 ms; the mean ab amplitude was 131.68 microV. Average latencies for the seven VEP peaks were 35.0, 43.1, 52.8, 64.1, 74.5, 90.4 and 112.2 ms. Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were recorded in 10 adult male guinea pigs with brain lesion. Lesions were produced in 5 animals by superficial suction of the occipital lobe. The other 5 animals were orally administered with hexachlorophene (about 35 mg/kg/day) for 28 days. In the VEP following the ablation of the occipital lobe, the peaks P10, N20, P55, N75, N140 and P200 disappeared in many cases. The amplitude of the peak N40 decreased to approximately one half its control VEP. In the VEP obtained from the animals administered with hexachlorophene, the peak latencies of N20, P30, P55, N75 and P100 were slightly prolonged after the 7th day following the first administration. On the other hand, there was no change in the latency of N40 during the whole period of administration. The peak-to-peak amplitude showed some variability in different peaks. Histologically, diffuse status spongiosis were found in the white matter of the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brain stem. As described above, the ablation of the occipital lobe caused markedly depressed VEPs, however, the responses to the photic stimulation persisted after the injury. On the other hand, the VEPs of animals administered with hexachlorophene showed a high probability of peak appearance, and a decrease in amplitude was not marked.  相似文献

Age-associated changes of visual evoked potentials by flash stimulation (flash VEP) were evaluated in 53 beagle dogs aged from 1- to 15-year-old. Among the components of flash VEP consisted of 3 positive (P1, P2 and P3) and 2 negative (N1 and N2) peaks by 150 msec, the latency of P2 and the later peaks (N2 and P3) were significantly delayed with aging. Both amplitudes of the P2-N2 and N2-P3 also showed a significant correlation with aging. The flash VEP is considered to be an available and useful technique to evaluate not only for visual pathway, but also some disturbance of neurological functions, like as those reported in demented human.  相似文献

Visual evoked potentials (VEP) in response to flashes of white light were recorded from 15 adult beagles of both sexes to provide a normative data base. Separate recordings were taken by stimulating each eye of every dog. Responses were recorded from a needle electrode placed over the nuchal crest referenced to an electrode just caudal to the eyes. Five positive and negative peaks were present in each VEP; P1, N1, P2, N2, and P3. Peak P2 was the most prominent. Mean (+/- standard deviation [SD]) latencies for peaks P1, N1, P2, N2, and P3 were 14.3 +/- 2.4, 29.2 +/- 2.2, 54.5 +/- 7.4, 78.0 +/- 13.1, and 98.1 +/- 12.6 msec, respectively. Peak-to-peak mean amplitudes ranged from 5.88 to 13.30 microV. Recordings were accomplished without sedation, anesthesia, or mydriatic drugs.  相似文献

Following unsuccessful attempts to record visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) in dogs with scalp electrodes, adoption of a new stimulation technique seems to be beneficial. Previously, flashes of white light administered after dark adaptation induced relatively high amplitude electroretinograms (ERGs) covering any VEP activity over the surface of the skull. ERG amplitude, however, can be significantly reduced using flashes of red light after light adaptation (mostly cone stimulation). Simultaneous ERG and VEP recording allows identification of VEPs composed of three significantly different negative peaks (N1, N2, and N3) measured in dogs anesthetized with chloralose and halothane. No more than two of the three peaks were seen in one recording. Only the N1 and N3 waves were consistently recorded in dogs anesthetized with thiopental and thiopental combined with halothane. In 50% of all recordings, N1 was seen alone. The other VEPs consisted of N1 and N2, or N1 and N3 occurring concurrently. The simultaneous occurrence of N2 and N3 waves, however, was never seen. Among all recordings, N1 was most frequently recorded (85% of measurements), followed by N3 and N2 (38% and 31% of measurements, respectively). Peaks of less than 90 ms are highly reproducible. Anesthesia is necessary to eliminate frequent artifacts obtained in conscious and sedated dogs. Thiopental and/or halothane had no effect on measured latencies compared with chloralose.  相似文献

The effect of cortisone acetate (CA) on the immune response of control and furazolidone (FZ)-fed turkey poults was investigated. CA, fed at a dose of 500 mg/kg of ration beginning at 1 week of age, decreased mortality but had little effect on the development of FZ-induced cardiomyopathy. When poults were 2 weeks of age, the in vitro stimulation of lymphocytes by phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and concanavalin A (Con A) was significantly depressed (P less than or equal to 0.001 and P less than or equal to 0.05, respectively) in cortisone-treated poults. The time of the peak response of lymphocytes from poults 2-5 weeks of age to in vitro stimulation by PHA was significantly delayed (P less than or equal to 0.01) and the magnitude of the response was significantly depressed (P less than or equal to 0.001) in cortisone-treated poults compared with control poults. Cortisone treatment had no effect on time of peak response to Con A stimulation but significantly depressed (P less than or equal to 0.05) the magnitude of the response. Poults receiving FZ administered by gastric tube showed a peak response to PHA stimulation significantly (P less than or equal to 0.05) earlier and significantly (P less than or equal to 0.05) greater than did control poults.  相似文献

The local uteroovarian pathway for uterine-induced luteolysis was studied in 34 ewes. Bilaterally ovulating ewes were used to study the role of the main uterine vein (uterine branch of uteroovarian vein) and unilaterally ovulating ewes were used to study the role of the ovarianartery. Surgical operation was done on day 7, 8, or 9 of diestrus and ewes were necropsied on day 20. In 4 bilaterally ovulating control ewes (unilaterally hysterectomized), mean weight of corpus luteum (CL) was less (P smaller than 0.05) on the side of the intact uterine horn (55 mg) than on the side of unilateral hysterectomy (548 mg). In 4 treated ewes (unilaterally hysterectomized and with surgical anastomosis of uterine vein from the intact side to the hysterectomized side), mean weight of CL on the hysterectomized side (153 mg) was less (P smaller than 0.05) than on the uterine-intact side (391 mg). The mean weight of CL on the hysterectomized side in the treated group was not significantly different from that of the uterine-intact side in the control group. Unilaterally ovulating ewes were randomized into 5 groups: (1) controls which were uterine intact, (2) controls in which a unilateral hysterectomy was done ipsilateral to CL, (3) unilateral hysterectomy done ipsilateral to CL and anastomosis of the ovarian branch of the ovarian artery on the uterine-intact side to the ovarian branch of the ovarian artery on the hysterectomized side, (4) controls in which unilateral hysterectomy was done contralateral to CL and the ovarian vascular pedicle on the uterine-intact side was isolated, and (5) unilateral hysterectomy done contralateral to CL, isolation of ovarian vascular pedicle on the uterine-intact side, and anastomosis of the ovarian branch of the ovarian artery on the unilaterally hysterectomized side to the ovarian branch of the ovarian artery on the uterine-intact side. Mean weight of CL was less (P smaller than 0.05) in groups 1 (56 mg), 3 (40 mg), and 4 (120 mg) than in groups 2 (408 mg) or 5 (473 mg). The mean weight of CL was not significantly different among groups 1, 3, and 4 or between groups 2 and 5. Results demonstrate that the local luteolytic effect of the uterus in ewes involves a venoarterial pathway and indicate that the main uterine vein is an adequate uterine outlet and the ovarian artery is an adequate ovarian inlet for the venoarterial pathway without the necessity of other possible concomitant local routes.  相似文献

The acoustic reflex (AR) and brain stem auditory-evoked response (BAER) were recorded in adult cats 5 minutes after IM administration of xylazine (1 mg/kg) and after IM administration of ketamine (10 mg/kg). Ipsilateral and contralateral AR were recorded at 10 and 20 dB above acoustic reflex threshold 5 minutes after xylazine administration and 5 and 35 minutes after ketamine administration. Monaural BAER were recorded 5 minutes after xylazine and 5 and 35 minutes after ketamine, using stimulus intensities of 90-, 80-, and 70-dB hearing level (HL). Additional BAER were recorded at 10, 15, and 25 minutes after ketamine, using the 90-dB HL stimulus. Pre- and postinjection comparisons were made for threshold, latency, and amplitude of the AR and for latency and amplitude of waves I through VI of the BAER. At both stimulus intensities before and after ketamine administration threshold for the ipsilateral reflex was significantly lower (P greater than 0.05) than for the contralateral reflex. The threshold, latency, and amplitude of the AR were unaffected (P greater than 0.05) by the injection of ketamine after xylazine. The amplitude of BAER waves was not affected (P greater than 0.05) by ketamine after xylazine for each of the 3 stimulus intensities. Latency of the 90-dB HL-evoked response was increased (P less than or equal to 0.05) for waves III/IV at 5 and 35 minutes after ketamine, and for wave V at each of the postinjection times, except at postinjection minute 15.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Central blindness in a 3.5-year-old crossbred steer was evaluated by electrodiagnostic techniques. When admitted the steer was depressed, head pressed, and circled to the left. Ptosis and absence of menace response were seen with the right eye, while the left eye was normal; direct and consensual pupillary light responses were normal in both eyes. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials and electroretinograms were essentially normal. The flash visual evoked potential (VEP) was greatly reduced upon stimulation of the right eye, while no VEP peaks could be recognized after flash stimuli were presented to the left eye. The amplitude of the electroencephalogram was depressed over right occipital cortex. Multiple brain abscesses were detected on postmortem examination adjacent to the left thalamus, in the left caudal cerebrum, and right frontal cerebrum. Corynebacterium pyogenes was cultured from abscess exudate; however, no origin for the infection could be determined. Both eyes were microscopically normal. The thalamic abscesses were postulated to have produced the EEG depression. Correlations between the VEP abnormalities and the abscess locations are discussed, based on proposed central nervous system generators of the VEP.  相似文献

A survey of a western Canadian racetrack determined the superelevation and transition curves to be less than the cited design standards. High-speed cinematography was used to film seven Standardbred pacers as they proceeded around one curve of the track at racing speed and for each horse 19 temporal stride parameters were obtained from these films using a film analyzer system. Average velocities were calculated and the mean stride length was found to vary from 5.08 m to 5.77 m. In all frames analyzed the hind foot was observed to contact the track surface prior to the ipsilateral forefoot and all horses displayed significant (p less than 0.05) contralateral asymmetry of some temporal stride parameters. Fifteen temporal stride parameters were significantly different (p less than 0.05) when compared between horses but only three temporal stride parameters were significantly different (p less than 0.05) when their values were compared between segments of the curved portions of the track. It is suggested that temporal gait asymmetry should not be used to judge the standards of racetrack design.  相似文献

Induction of twinning by ipsilateral nonsurgical transfer of frozen two or demi-embryos was attempted in 129 virgin dairy or crossbred heifers that had been kept under a stable in our station (group-1), mountain field (group-2) and private farm (group-3) conditions. Ninety seven heifers (75%) were diagnosed pregnant by rectal palpation at 35 to 60 days of gestation; 86 heifers produced 37 sets of twins and 49 single calves. Pregnancy rate of group-1 was lower compared to those of groups-2 and -3 (63%, 88%, 78%, respectively). Abortion and mortality rates of group-3 were significantly lower (P less than 0.05) than those of groups-1 and -2 (8% and 6%, 12% and 16%, 18% and 24%). Twin calves had a lower birth weight (P less than 0.05) than singles. But there was no significant difference in weight between singles and twin calves at 270-330 days of age. Dystocia and difficult delivery were not observed in females producing twins. The incidence of retained placentas in twin calving cows (17%) was higher than that of single calving cows (2%). The interval to conceive postpartum was longer in twin calving cows (95 +/- 41 days) than in single calving cows (87 +/- 26 days). Gestation length was 5.0 days shorter for twin calving cows (P less than 0.05).  相似文献

Contact wide-field specular microscopy was performed on eyes of 16 healthy dogs after tissue plasminogen activator at a concentration of 25 micrograms/100 microliters (group 1, n = 8) or 50 micrograms/100 microliters (group 2, n = 8) was injected into 1 anterior chamber of each dog. The contralateral eye served as a nontreated control. Applanation tonometry was used to measure intraocular pressure in both eyes for up to 168 hours. By use of computerized morphometric analysis and pachymetry, changes from baseline values in endothelial cell density, cell morphologic features, and corneal thickness were evaluated at postinjection hours 24, 48, and 168. Significant mean differences in intraocular pressure were not detected between treated eyes of group-1 dogs and those in group 2 at designated times, or between treated and nontreated eyes of dogs in either group. Mean corneal thickness of treated and nontreated eyes was similar in both groups through postinjection hour 168. Changes in mean percentage of endothelial cell sides were observed only in treated eyes of group-2 dogs, with the mean percentage of hexagons at postinjection hour 168 decreasing by 18%, a decrease that was significantly (P less than 0.05) greater than the decrease in nontreated eyes. The mean percentage of 6-sided cells in treated eyes of group-2 dogs was significantly (P less than 0.05) less than that in treated eyes of group-1 dogs at postinjection hour 168.  相似文献

Plasma cortisol and immunoreactive (IR)-ACTH responses to 125 micrograms of synthetic ACTH (cosyntropin) administered IV or IM were compared in 10 clinically normal cats. After IM administration of cosyntropin, mean plasma cortisol concentration increased significantly (P less than 0.05) within 15 minutes, reached maximal concentration at 45 minutes, and decreased to values not significantly different from baseline concentration by 2 hours. After IV administration of cosyntropin, mean plasma cortisol concentration also increased significantly (P less than 0.05) at 15 minutes, but in contrast to IM administration, the maximal cortisol response took longer (75 minutes) and cortisol concentration remained significantly (P less than 0.05) higher than baseline cortisol concentration for 4 hours. Mean peak cortisol concentration (298 nmol/L) after IV administration of cosyntropin was significantly (P less than 0.05) higher than the peak value (248 nmol/L) after IM administration. All individual peak plasma cortisol concentrations and areas under the plasma cortisol response curve were significantly (P less than 0.05) higher after IV administration of cosyntropin than after IM administration. Mean plasma IR-ACTH concentration returned to values not statistically different from baseline by 60 minutes after IM administration of cosyntropin, whereas IR-ACTH concentration still was higher than baseline concentration 6 hours after IV administration. One or both uterine horns were removed on postpartum day 6 day 1=parturition in pseudopregnant gerbils.
