Stress in freshwater fish results in an increase in serum cortisol and glucose and a decrease in serum electrolytes. These physiological indicators of stress were measured in fignerling and food-size channel catfish, "Ictalurus punctatus," before harvest, immediately after harvest, and for several days after the fish were harvested. Fingerlings were harvested in spring with either a turbine fish pump or a traditional boom-and-basket lift net. Food-size fish were harvested in winter, spring, and summer by a turbine fish pump, a vacuum fish pump, or a life net. Elctrolyte concentrations were very stable and did not show consistent effects of harvesting. Cortisol and glucose were the most sensitive to harvesting, and both increased during harvesting in all months tested. Recovery of the serum concentrations to pre-harvest levels was generally completed by the fifth day after harvest. Stress responses were similar among the different harvesting techniques, which suggests that the method of choice may be based on other factors, such as cost of available facilities.  相似文献

The technical features of a laboratory scale water recycling unit for experimental small scale tilapia breeding are described. Two units (1 and 2) were operated during a 6 month period, carrying a similar fish load (7·5 kg) and feeding rate (2% fish body weight/day). Unit 1 received natural illumination, while unit 2 was artificially illuminated (14/10 - light/dark cycle). Both units were equipped with a biological filter bed (substrate surface area, 3500 cm2). In unit 1, total ammonium and nitrite concentrations ranged from 0·05 to 0·5 mg liter−1, while nitrate varied between 10–40 mg liter−1. In unit 2 corresponding values were 0·15-3 mg liter−1, 0·05–0·8 mg liter−1 and 10–40 mg liter−1. Temperatures ranged between 20–29°C and pH values between 7·5–6·9 in both units. Dissolved oxygen concentrations decreased gradually from 5·6 to 3·4 mg liter−1 in unit 1 and from 5·6 to 2·6 mg liter−1 in unit 2. Twenty-six spawnings occurred in unit 1 in March and April, while only eight spawnings occurred in unit 2, possibly because of the absence of sunlight. The significance of these results are discussed.  相似文献

Florida red tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) were reared in 23 m3 seawater (37 ppt) pools. Monosex males (1.3 g mean weight) were stocked at a density of 25 fish/m3 and reared to fingerling size (>10 g) in pools receiving either chicken manure applied at a rate of 105 kg/ha day−1 or pelletized feed (30% protein) administered ad libitum. Following the nursery period, fingerlings in fed pools were reared through adult, marketable sizes.

After 20 days of nursery rearing, mean fish weights (5.7–9.6 g) and survival (77.5–98.6%) in manured pools ranged from less than to greater than values in fed pools (7.9–9.4 g and 95.5–98.2%). By day 33, while mean weights (11.3±0.4 g) and survival (84.5±5.2%) in manured pools were significantly less than those in fed pools (18.0±0.6 g and 95.9±1.4%), fingerling-size fish were obtained from manured pools at an overall productivity of 55 kg/ha day−1.

After 170 days in fed pools, mean fish weight was 467±9 g, survival was 89.7±0.9%, and food conversion was 1.6±0.2. Daily weight gain achieved a maximum of 4.4 g day before a rapid decline in water temperature from 28–29°C to 24–25°C caused a loss of fish appetite and evidence of disease.

The results suggest that while nursery rearing of Florida red tilapia in seawater pools fertilized with chicken manure is feasible, considerable variability in fish performance among pools can be expected, despite identical management methods. In pools receiving prepared feed, high growth rates and survival through adult, marketable sizes suggests a potential for commercial production of Florida red tilapia in seawater.  相似文献

Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) maintained in crowded (100 kg m− 3) and uncrowded (20 kg m− 3) conditions were fed 42 days with five experimental diets having different levels of vitamin E (25.6 and 275.6 mg kg diet− 1), C (0 and 1000 mg kg diet− 1) and HUFA (highly unsaturated fatty acids, 12.5 and 320.5 g kg diet− 1): −E−HUFA, −E+HUFA, +E−HUFA, +E+HUFA, −C+E+HUFA. Cortisol, plasma metabolites, tissue glycogen, fish composition, and tissue fatty-acid profile were evaluated at the end of the experimental period. In general, no changes in cortisol levels were associated with crowding, although +E+HUFA and −C+E+HUFA fish showed higher levels (mean ± SE, 55.5 ± 11.1 and 78.0 ± 11.3 ng ml− 1) as a consequence of a possible interaction between chronic crowding and diet composition. Protein and glucose con-centration in plasma displayed no effect of crowding, but liver glycogen showed a general tendency to decrease in −E−HUFA, −E+HUFA, +E−HUFA, +E+HUFA, −C+E+HUFA crowded groups (70.2 ± 2.1, 52.1 ± 2.5, 73.4 ± 7.4, 91.7 ± 3.3, 74.2 ± 8.4 mg g− 1 tissue, respectively) compared to uncrowded groups (108.9 ± 14.2, 82.7 ± 8.8, 92.4 ± 10.7, 99.1 ± 10.0, 103.5 ± 15.6 mg g− 1 tissue, respectively), thus proving significant in −E+HUFA fish. Variations in total lipids, triglycerides, total cholesterol and HDL as well as LDL cholesterol in plasma were manifested under crowding conditions, displaying a certain influence of vitamin E and HUFA dietary content. Final body composition, in general, showed no change attributable to fish density, but some differences associated with diet composition were found in lipid and moisture percentages of crowded fish. Liver and muscle fatty-acid profile revealed a clear effect of the dietary lipid source that was more evident in muscle than in liver at normal fish density, and in some cases this effect was modulated by dietary vitamin E and C content and fish-culture conditions.  相似文献

This study was conducted to examine the effects of dietary vitamin C and/or E and their interaction on growth and reproductive performance in yellow perch. Yellow perch juveniles were divided into four treatments with triplicate groups and fed with one of four semi-purified diets for 32 weeks. The experimental diets were formulated to contain no or high vitamin E levels (160 mg/kg) without or with vitamin C supplementation (250 mg/kg) designated as diets −C−E, −C+E, +C−E, or +C+E, respectively. The growth rates and survival of yellow perch fed with +C−E and +C+E diets were significantly higher than the fish fed with −C−E diet. Total- and dehydro-ascorbate concentrations in liver and testis increased in response to its dietary supplementation. The -tocopherol concentration in sperm was significantly affected by dietary supplementation of vitamin C. Gonadosomatic index of males was lower in the fish fed with −C−E diet compared to that of fish fed with other diets. Hatching rates of embryos obtained from testing sperm viability was significantly improved in fish fed with the diets sufficient in vitamin C (82±7%) compared to the fish fed with the −C−E diet (59±7). This study indicates that supplementation of dietary vitamin C and E increase growth rate, and semen quality can be improved by dietary vitamin C supplementation within one maturation cycle, and vitamin C may spare sperm vitamin E depending on vitamin E stores in tissues.  相似文献

Grading trials were performed in experimental and commercial catfish ponds to compare an in-pond horizontal floating bar grader to current live-car grading. Three replicate trials were conducted in experimental ponds at three different temperature ranges (warm, >26 °C; cool, 13–26 °C; cold, <13 °C) with catfish size groups stocked in ratios of either 75:25, 50:50, or 25:75 sub-marketable (<0.57 kg) to marketable fish (≥0.57 kg). Commercial pond trials were replicated three times at each temperature range with a fish size range typical of ponds ready to harvest. Stress experienced by fish during harvest and grading was measured by mean serum glucose and cortisol levels. Grading speed was greater (P < 0.05) with the UAPB grader (105–449 kg/min) than the traditional live-car grader (0.5–0.6 kg/min). The UAPB grader decreased (P < 0.05) the proportion of sub-marketable fish during all trials. In contrast, the live car did not reduce the proportion of sub-marketable fish with the experimental methods used in this study during commercial trials or in the 25:75 distributions during warm and cold temperature trials in experimental ponds. The UAPB grader returned an average two to four times (range of 2–52) more sub-marketable fish by weight to the pond than the traditional live car method. Glucose and cortisol levels in fish graded with the two technologies were not significantly different. The UAPB grader sorted fish more accurately, consistently, and quickly than the live car at all temperatures in both experimental and commercial trials.  相似文献

Tambaqui (48%) was reared in polyculture with grass carp (27%) and curimbatá (25%) from 75 g mean weight for a period of 164 days. Ponds of 1200 m2 were stocked at a total density of 12720 ha−1. Fish were fed with an experimental diet made from soybean and maize at a daily rate calculated as 3% of the tambaqui biomass. Grass carp received chopped angola grass at a daily rate of 15% of live weight. Ponds were weekly manured with 120 kg of mixed cattle and goat manure. Tambaqui reached a final weight of 492 g. Survival rate was 83%. The experimental polyculture had a mean net yield of 7·5 t ha−1 year−1, with apparent conversion rates of 1·13, 5·5 and 7·7 kg kg−1 of diet, grass and manure, respectively. All three species had a high growth rate (from 1·2 to 2·1 % day−1). Tambaqui's growth was affected by the fall in water temperature in the second part of the experiment. Cost/benefit calculations proved the high profitability of the tested semi-intensive polyculture system.  相似文献

Daily and weekly cyclical fluctuations in ammonia (NH4---N μg litre−1) and nitrite---nitrogen (NO2---N μg litre−1) were shown to occur in marine recirculating systems containing juvenile turbot, Scophthalmus maximus (L.). A stepwise multivariant regression analysis, computed for the prefeeding morning base levels, showed that ammonia---nitrogen concentration in the fish tanks was related to inflow ammonia---nitrogen concentration, water flow rate, water temperature, mean fish weight and fish biomass. Influent ammonia concentration and water flow rate were by far the most important variables accounting for 68·0% and 16·7% of the variation in the regression respectively.

The fluctuations, which occurred at concentrations thought to be tolerated by the fish, were attributed to the amount and timing of feeding. The significance of the existence of such fluctuations was discussed together with the importance of their amplitude and frequency.  相似文献

The safety and efficacy of emamectin benzoate, administered in-feed to Atlantic salmon smolts, Salmo salar L., held in freshwater, was evaluated as a preventative treatment against sea lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, following transfer of fish to seawater.

In the safety study, salmon smolts held in freshwater were fed with diets containing emamectin benzoate at nominal doses of 0 (control), 50 (recommended dose) and 250 (5× recommended dose) μg kg−1 fish day−1 for 7 days (days 0–6). Actual dose rates, based on measured concentrations of emamectin benzoate in feed, differences in fish weight, and feed consumed, were 0, 54, and 272 μg kg−1 day−1, respectively. On day 9, fish were transferred to seawater and observed for 14 days. No differences in feeding response, coordination, behaviour, gross and histological appearance were observed between control fish and those that received 54 μg kg−1 day−1. Among smolts that received 272 μg kg−1 day−1, approximately 50% exhibited darker coloration, and one fish (1%) exhibited uncoordinated swimming behaviour. No pathognomonic signs of emamectin benzoate toxicity were identified.

In the efficacy study, smolts held in freshwater were fed an unmedicated ration (control group) or emamectin benzoate at 50 μg kg−1 day−1 (treated group) for 7 days (days 0–6). On day 9, fish were re-distributed to eight seawater tanks, each holding 30 control and 30 treated fish. On days 28, 56, 77 and 109, respectively, control and treated fish in two tanks were challenged with L. salmonis copepodites. When lice in each group reached chalimus stage IV, fish were sampled and the numbers of lice were recorded. Fish challenged at day 109 were sampled for the second time when lice were at the adult stage. Efficacy was calculated as the reduction in the mean number of lice on treated fish relative to the mean on control fish. Treatment with emamectin benzoate resulted in an efficacy of 85.0–99.8% in fish challenged at days 28–77, from the start of treatment, and lice counts were significantly lower (P<0.001) on treated fish than on controls. When fish challenged at day 109 were sampled at day 128, efficacy was 44.3%, but survival of chalimus to adult lice on treated fish was lower, and at day 159, efficacy had increased to 73%. These results demonstrate that treatment of salmon smolts with emamectin benzoate in freshwater was well tolerated and highly effective in preventing sea lice infestation following transfer of fish to seawater.  相似文献

The culture of the mulloway (Argyrosomus japonicus), like many other Sciaenidae fishes, is rapidly growing. However there is no information on their metabolic physiology. In this study, the effects of various hypoxia levels on the swimming performance and metabolic scope of juvenile mulloway (0.34 ± 0.01 kg, mean ± SE, n = 30) was investigated (water temperature = 22 °C). In normoxic conditions (dissolved oxygen = 6.85 mg l− 1), mulloway oxygen consumption rate (M·o2) increased exponentially with swimming speed to a maximum velocity (Ucrit) of 1.7 ± < 0.1 body lengths s− 1 (BL s− 1) (n = 6). Mulloway standard metabolic rate (SMR) was typical for non-tuna fishes (73 ± 8 mg kg− 1 h− 1) and they had a moderate scope for aerobic metabolism (5 times the SMR). Mulloway minimum gross cost of transport (GCOTmin, 0.14 ± 0.01 mg kg− 1 m− 1) and optimum swimming velocity (Uopt, 1.3 ± 0.2 BL s− 1) were comparable to many other body and caudal fin swimming fish species. Energy expenditure was minimum when swimming between 0.3 and 0.5 BL s− 1. The critical dissolved oxygen level was 1.80 mg l− 1 for mulloway swimming at 0.9 BL s− 1. This reveals that mulloway are well adapted to hypoxia, which is probably adaptive from their natural early life history within estuaries. In all levels of hypoxia (75% saturation = 5.23, 50% = 3.64, and 25% = 1 .86 mg l− 1), M·o2 increased linearly with swimming speed and active metabolic rate (AMR) was reduced (218 ± 17, 202 ± 14 and 175 ± 10 mg kg− 1 h− 1 for 75%, 50% and 25% saturation respectively). However, Ucrit was only reduced at 50% and 25% saturation (1.4 ± < 0.1 and 1.4 ± < 0.1 BL s− 1 respectively). This demonstrates that although the metabolic capacity of mulloway is reduced in mild hypoxia (75% saturation) they are able to compensate to maintain swimming performance. GCOTmin (0.09 ± 0.01 mg kg− 1 m− 1) and Uopt (0.8 ± 0.1 BL s− 1) were significantly reduced at 25% dissolved oxygen saturation. As mulloway metabolic scope was significantly reduced at all hypoxia levels, it suggests that even mild hypoxia may reduce growth productivity.  相似文献

Mature winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus) (cultivar Tpt26) seeds were roasted or autoclaved and their meals evaluated as a dietary protein source for the African catfish. Five dry practical diets (400 g protein/kg and 17.5 kJ gross energy/g dry diet) containing menhaden fish meal or each of the heat-processed winged bean meals as partial replacement (80%), (with or without 5 g -methionine/kg diet supplementation) for menhaden fish meal, were prepared and fed to triplicate groups of catfish fingerlings (5.8±1.2 g) to satiation for 70 days. No mortality occurred throughout the study and satisfactory diet acceptance was observed when the heat-processed winged bean meals replaced menhaden fish meal. Differences were found in weight gain, specific growth rate, feed and protein efficiency ratios, but were not significant (P>0.05). Digestibility of crude protein and gross energy content of the diets were high (>85%) and comparable to that of menhaden fish meal. Carcass composition of catfish did not vary significantly (P>0.05) between diet treatments. Results indicate that both autoclaved and roasted winged bean meals were acceptable as protein sources and can replace 80% of menhaden fish meal in catfish diets.  相似文献

The overall objective of the study was to evaluate a slaughter method of eels, which consisted of chilling until their body temperature was <5 °C for stunning, and subsequently placing them in cold brine at −18 °C for 15 min for killing. Three distinct experiments and a control were performed.

Firstly, 19 eels with an average live weight of 758±44 g were restrained and equipped with EEG, ECG electrodes and a temperature sensor inside the body. Then, they were placed in the ice water. Indices for the induction of unconsciousness and insensibility were the appearance of theta and delta waves and no response on pain stimuli, which disappeared at a body temperature of 8.0±2.1 °C after 12±5 min in 15 eels. The responses to pain stimuli did not disappear in three eels. Within a confidence level of 95%, the percentage of eels that is not effectively stunned during the procedure in ice water of <5 °C was at least 5%. The heart rate decreased from 24±10 beats/min (n=14) to 7±4 (n=11) and became irregular during cooling down. When placed in the brine water of −18 °C, the EEG showed rapid and extreme depolarisation of the membranes, which started after 27±17 s (n=18). The ECG showed fluttering of the heart in all eels. None of the eels recovered after this procedure.

For 10 eels with an average live weight of 128±27 g, it was observed that the body temperature decreased from 17.1±0.6 to 4.0±0.5 °C in the ice water. After 15 min in the brine water of −16.1±2.2 °C, the body temperature decreased to −3.1±2.3 °C.

Finally, three groups of seven eels and eight single eels were placed in ice water of −0.0±0.1 °C. The observation of unrestrained eels revealed four phases. Animals were (1) swimming around in the water, (2) attempting to escape from the ice water, (3) pressing their nose to the wall or corner while showing clonic muscle cramps, and finally (4) breathing only, while all other muscle activity was totally suppressed. Afterwards, they were transferred to cold brine at −18 °C, and none of the eels recovered.

The eight control eels, which were transferred to water at 18 °C, swam around, except for one that was lying in an S-shape position at the bottom. After 570 and 605 s, two eels tried to escape from the box.

The obtained results show that the eels, which were transferred from water at 18 °C to ice water, might be stressed, a specific behaviour and an irregular heart rate were observed. From an animal welfare point of view, it is therefore not recommended to stun eels by live chilling. Moreover, at least 5% of the eels will not be stunned at a body temperature of <5 °C. Placing eels in brine water of −18 °C is an effective method to kill the eels before slaughter. However, it cannot be recommended to place conscious eels in cold brine water, because it takes more than 27 s before unconsciousness may be induced.  相似文献

The oxygen consumption of Atlantic salmon was measured in large culture tanks for a period of 20 months from the parr to the adult stage. In addition, diurnal sampling was conducted for estimation of both oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion. The oxygen consumption was affected especially by temperature, season and smoltification. For parr the oxygen consumption rate was 1–6 mg O2/kg min and the ammonia excretion rate was 0·037–0·13 mg N/kg min from autumn to spring. The corresponding rates for adult salmon during the period October to July were 1·5–4·5 mg O2/kg min and 0·075–0·13 mg N/kg min.  相似文献

Filtration rates of hatchery-reared king scallop (Pecten maximus L.) juveniles, fed a single species alga diet (Pavlova lutheri (Droop) Green), were measured at a range of temperatures (6–21 °C). Weight specific filtration rate (ml min−1 g−1 (live weight)) of juveniles of a selected size range of 17–19 mm shell height (0.26–0.36 g live weight) increased with temperature above 16 °C and decreased below 11 °C, but was not significantly different between these two temperatures. Measurements at 16 °C using juveniles with a wider size range of 10–25 mm shell height (0.05–0.8 g live weight) gave the allometric equation: filtration rate (ml min−1)=12.19×weight (g)0.887. Filtration rate decreased significantly when the cell concentration was greater than 200 cells μl−1 (4.25 mg (organic weight) l−1). With six other algae food species, filtration rates similar to those with P. lutheri were only achieved with Chaetoceros calcitrans (Paulsen) Takano. All other algae species tested were cleared from suspension at significantly lower rates. Experiments with diet mixtures of P. lutheri and these other algae suggested that this was usually a reflection of lowered filtration activity, rather than pre-ingestive rejection of cells. In experimental outdoor nursery rearing systems, the filtration rate was inversely proportional to the concentration of cells in the inflow, in the range 5–210 cells μl−1. It was not affected by flow rate (2–130 l h−1, equivalent to 0.12–28.38 l h−1 g−1 (live weight)) with scallop juveniles stocked from 2 to 62 g l−1. The results are discussed in relation to on-growing scallops at field sites.  相似文献

Ecuadorian Penaeus vannamei were cultured in dirt ponds (each of approximately 163 m2) at four different stocking densities, i.e. 5 shrimp m−2, 10 shrimp m−2, 15 shrimp m−2 and 20 shrimp m−2. Experiments were carried out over three different periods during the year. Each experiment lasted for 11–14 weeks. No commercial feed was given to the shrimp. The only input to the ponds was about 30 kg of cattle manure per pond per week. Chemical composition of the cattle manure was analyzed. Water quality parameters such as temperature, pH, DO and turbidity were recorded twice daily for each experiment; nutrients (nitrite, nitrate, ammonium and phosphate), water ATP, sediment ATP, H2S and chlorophyll were measured twice weekly for each experiment. Shrimp were sampled either weekly or bi-weekly for body weight measurements.

The results showed a negative correlation between stocking density and growth. Weekly growth ranged from 0·44 to 1·58 g week−1. Survival was over 50% in all treatments and averaged at 70·8%. Under these stocking densities, shrimp production ranged from 4·4 to 18·8 kg ha−1 day−1. The stocking density of 15 shrimps m−2 provides better production than the other stocking densities.

Water quality data did not relate to any shrimp growth. Water nutrient levels in pond discharge water were less than or equal to the nutrients in the incoming water in spite of the weekly addition of cattle manure and did not increase with the addition of cattle manure. No coliform bacteria were detected in any pond water samples through the study period. This indicates digestion of cattle manure in marine shrimp ponds would not pollute the environment with high concentrations of dissolved nutrients.

Thus, a marine shrimp pond can be considered a dissolved nutrient marine treatment plant converting unwanted cattle manure (1841 kg cattle manure ha−1 week−1 in this study) into a valuable commodity — shrimp.  相似文献

The aim of this trial was to study the utilization of dietary protein by seabass juveniles with 5.5 g mean body weight, at two water temperatures: 18°C and 25°C. For that purpose, the fish were fed for 12 weeks, four isoenergetic diets with different protein levels (36, 42, 48, and 56%). At the end of the trial, growth rate and feed utilization were significantly better at the higher water temperature. Within each temperature, specific growth rate and feed efficiency were significantly higher with the 48 and 56% protein diets than with the other diets. At 25°C, feed efficiency was also significantly better with the 56% than with the 48% protein diet. N retention (g kg average body weight−1 day−1) was higher at 25°C than at 18°C but, as a % N intake the inverse was true. Although at 25°C N retention (% N intake) was not different among groups, retention in g kg ABW−1 day−1 was significantly higher with the 56% protein diet than with 36 and 42% protein diets. On the contrary, at 18°C N retention (g kg ABW−1 day−1) was similar among groups while as a percentage of N intake it was inversely related to the dietary protein level. Regarding energy utilization, at each temperature, there were no differences among dietary treatments on energy retention (g kg ABW−1 day−1). As a % of energy intake, energy retention significantly increased with the increase of dietary protein level at 25°C, while at 18°C, there were no significant differences among groups. Within each temperature, at the end of the trial, there were no differences among groups in proximate composition of whole fish. Apparent digestibility coefficients of dry matter, protein and energy significantly improved with the increase of water temperature but, within each temperature, there were no significant differences among groups. The results of this study indicate that, regardless of water temperature, the dietary protein requirement for growth seems to be satisfied with a diet containing 48% protein. Growth and feed efficiency were significantly higher at the higher temperature, however, protein utilization was more efficient at the lower temperature.  相似文献

A growth experiment was conducted to determine the optimal dietary protein to energy (P/E) ratio for juvenile Japanese seabass (initial average weight 6.26±0.10 g). Nine practical diets were formulated to contain three protein levels (36%, 41% and 46%), each with three lipid levels (8%, 12% and 16%), in order to produce a range of P/E ratios (from 19.8 to 28.6 mg protein kJ−1). Each diet was randomly assigned to triplicate groups of 60 fish in sea floating cages (1.5×1.5×2.0 m). Fish were fed twice daily (06:30 and 16:30) to apparent satiation for 8 weeks. The water temperature fluctuated from 26.5 to 32.5 °C, the salinity from 32‰ to 36‰ and dissolved oxygen content was approximately 7 mg l−1 during the experimental period. The results showed that the growth was significantly affected by dietary P/E ratio (P<0.05). Fish fed the diets with 46% protein (12% and 16% lipid, P/E ratio of 26.7 and 25.7 mg protein kJ−1) had the highest specific growth rates (SGR) (4.26 and 4.24% day−1). However, fish fed the diet with 41% protein and 12% lipid showed comparable growth (4.20% day−1), and had higher protein efficiency ratio (PER), protein productive value (PPV) and energy retention than other groups (P<0.05). No significant differences in survival were found among dietary treatments. Carcass lipid content positively correlated with dietary lipid level irrespective of protein level and inversely correlated with carcass moisture content. Carcass protein and ash contents increased with increasing dietary lipid at each protein level. These results suggest that the diet containing 41% protein and 12% lipid with P/E of 25.9 mg protein kJ−1 is optimal for Japanese seabass.  相似文献

A 6‐month feeding trial was conducted in field condition using 10 farm ponds (400–600 m2) to investigate the effect of mixed feeding schedules on the growth of sutchi catfish, Pangasius hypophthalmus with silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix. Fish were stocked at a ratio of 80:20 (sutchi catfish, 4.9±0.5 g: silver carp, 12.0±0.8 g) at the total rate of 25 000 ha?1. Two diets of high protein (30%, HP) and low protein (16%, LP) were prepared using locally available feed ingredients. Five different feeding schedules of high‐protein diet continuously (HP), low‐protein diet continuously (LP), 1‐day low–protein/1‐day high‐protein diet (1LP/1HP), 7 days low–protein/7 days high‐protein diet (7LP/7HP) and 14 days low–protein/14 days high‐protein diet (14LP/14HP) were tested. The fish were fed twice daily at the rate of 15%, 10%, 8% and 5% of their body weight for first, second, third month and rest of experimental period respectively. Feeding rate was calculated only on the basis of sutchi catfish weight only and was adjusted every 2 weeks according to weight gain. Fish fed LP and HP on alternate day (1LP/1HP) resulted in significantly (P<0.05) higher growth rate, feed utilization and production among the treatments. However, there were no significant differences (P>0.05) between the growth rates and production of fish fed HP regularly and fish fed 7 days LP followed by 7 days HP (7LP/7HP). Fish maintained on LP grew the least. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) values for sutchi catfish ranged between 2.04 and 2.79 with feeding schedule 1LP/1HP showing the best FCR. The total production of fish (including silver carp) ranged between 8310 and 12 422 kg ha?1 6 months?1 with 1LP/1HP feeding schedule resulting in the highest production and net profit. The study demonstrated that feeding fish continuously with HP is less economical. Thus, for profitable sutchi catfish culture with silver carp, farmers can use the mixed feeding schedule of alternate day feeding of LP and HP as a means of reducing feed costs.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to develop a protocol for semen storage of piracanjuba (Brycon orbignyanus) by both cool storage at 4 °C and cryopreservation at − 196 °C. Semen was diluted in some fish semen extenders (Exp. 1) or in extenders combined with the antibiotic gentamycin sulfate (Exp. 2) and stored at 4 °C. Sperm motility was estimated every 24 h. Then, the effects of egg yolk (0 and 5%), cryoprotectants (dimethyl sulphoxide — DMSO, methanol, and methylglycol) and extenders (NaCl 154 mM, BTS™ Minitub and M III™ Minitub) on semen cryopreservation were evaluated (Exp. 3). Semen was added to each of eighteen cryosolutions (2 yolk concentrations × 3 cryoprotectants × 3 extenders), aspirated into 0.5-mL straws, frozen in nitrogen vapor (Taylor-Wharton, CP 300, “dry shipper”) and stored at − 196 °C. Sperm motility was evaluated after thawing at 60 °C-water bath for 8 s. The three cryosolutions that produced the highest post-thaw sperm motility were used again to freeze semen. Post-thaw semen quality was then evaluated under three tests: sperm motility, the percentage of live spermatozoa and hatching rate (Exp. 4). Piracanjuba semen diluted (1:10 total volume) in NaCl 200 mM or in Saad solution (NaCl 200 mM, Tris 30 mM) maintained motility above 35% for as long as 7 days, at 4 °C. Motility of only 7% was observed on undiluted semen after 3 days at 4 °C. There was neither beneficial nor detrimental effect of gentamycin on sperm motility at 250 μg/mL. Egg yolk addition to the cryosolution was beneficial in samples cryopreserved in NaCl 154 mM and in M III™, but detrimental for samples cryopreserved in BTS™. Methylglycol was the most effective cryoprotector compared to DMSO and methanol. Motility and percentage of live spermatozoa were similar among semen cryopreserved in NaCl–yolk, M III™–yolk and BTS™, all containing 10% methylglycol, but lower than fresh control. Hatching rates of eggs fertilized with sperm cryopreserved in NaCl–yolk or BTS™ were higher than for eggs fertilized with sperm cryopreserved in M III™–yolk, but lower than control fertilizations. The semen cryopreservation protocols developed here will be used to set up a gene bank for endangered piracanjuba populations.  相似文献

A simple tank system, using artificial aeration to supply oxygen and incoming water to dilute metabolic by-products and other wastes, was tested. Blue tilapia, Oreochromis aureus, were grown under a wide range of loads, 7–31 kg liter−1 min−1, and densities, 19–77 kg fish m−3 culture unit. Average yield ranged from 6–10 kg m−3 culture unit per month. Approximately 14–20 m3 of water was used for each kilogram of fish produced.  相似文献
