In May 2002, studies on the seasonal patterns of nematode infection of sheep were undertaken on four commercial sheep farms in southern Sweden, which had previously reported problems with nematode parasitism, especially due to Haemonchus contortus. One farm was used for intensive investigation. This entailed the establishment of two replicate groups of sheep, each consisting of 20 ewes and their lambs, on adjacent pasture paddocks. The seasonal patterns of nematode infection were followed by regular (approximately monthly) sampling of both ewes and lambs for nematode faecal egg counts and larval differentiation, and the sequential use of replicate groups of tracer lambs. H. contortus and Teladorsagia circumcincta were the most abundant nematode species, with the former most prevalent in the post-parturient faecal egg counts of ewes. Tracer worm counts showed almost 100% arrested development in the early fourth larval stage for H. contortus as early as mid-summer and the numbers of parasites progressively increased during the season. T. circumcincta also showed high levels of arrested development, but not as early, or as absolute, as for H. contortus. Tracers allocated to the paddocks at the time of turn-out following winter in May 2003, showed virtually a total absence of H. contortus in contrast to exceedingly high infections with T. circumcincta. Results of the three additional monitoring flocks supported these findings. It can be concluded that under Swedish sheep farming conditions, H. contortus has evolved to survive the long, cold winters entirely within the host as the arrested larval stage, relying on the lambing ewe to complete its life cycle. The peri-parturient relaxation of resistance in the ewes triggers the resumption of development to the adult egg-laying parasites to result in pasture contamination and the completion of just one parasite generation/year. In contrast, T. circumcincta can survive well over-winter, both on pasture and within the host.  相似文献

Residual ovine nematode pasture infections were assessed by grazing groups of ewes and their lambs on permanent sheep and cattle pastures and by the use of tracer lambs. Ostertagia spp., Cooperia oncophora, Nematodirus spp., Chabertia ovina and Trichuris spp. eggs and/or larvae survived on pastures overwinter. Second generation Ostertagia larvae were present in greatest numbers on pasture during the latter part of August and early September. The failure of a significant build-up of Cooperia oncophora was attributed to negligible worm egg output of this species in sheep. A build-up of Nematodirus spp. on pasture was not detected in this study.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that between-year transmission of Haemonchus contortus in Swedish sheep flocks is almost entirely as over-wintered populations within housed animals, and not on pasture. This suggests that eradication of this parasite is a realistic possibility. Thus, two sheep farms with a history of H. contortus infection on the Swedish island of Oland were selected for study. During the winter housing period of 2003/2004 all ruminants (sheep and cattle) on both farms were treated with ivermectin. Monitoring by faecal egg counts and infective larval differentials of ewes and lambs for the subsequent two grazing seasons, together with total abomasal worm counts of 10 lambs from each farm at the end of the first grazing year, showed that this objective was achieved.  相似文献

In a study of the relationship between pasture rotation in Illinois and acquisition of nematodes (mostly Haemonchus contortus) and body weight gains by lambs grazing with their ewes, 2 pasture rotation systems were tested. (1) Lambs and ewes were rotated through a series of 12 alfalfa-bromegrass-lespedeza pastures, each pasture being grazed for 3 to 4 days and rested for 5.5 weeks; 4 complete rotations were done during a 168-day grazing season. (2) Lambs and ewes were moved every 2 days, and 3 complete rotations of 50, 42, and 54 days, respectively, were done during the 146-day grazing season. The lambs under rotation had more nematodes and gained less weight than nonrotated control lambs, although rotation increased the amount of pasturage. Rotation is not recommended to control nematode parasitism of sheep in Illinois.  相似文献

The persistent effect of doramectin injectable against gastrointestinal nematodes was investigated in a controlled field study with 70 sheep kept on alpine pastures in Switzerland. After grazing on home pastures for four weeks 50 lambs and 20 ewes were allocated to two equal groups according to age and body weight. At turnout to alpine pasture in June doramectin (0.3 mg/kg) was administered by intramuscular injection to 25 lambs and 10 ewes (Group D), whereas control sheep (Group K) remained untreated. Animals of both groups were kept on separate pastures (altitude: 1100 m) and were rotated between three paddocks during a total grazing period of 13 weeks. After doramectin treatment faecal examinations of Group D sheep showed a marked reduction of the trichostrongyle egg output which remained close to zero for eight weeks. During this period serum pepsinogen levels did not indicate the presence of a substantial immature worm burden in the abomasal mucosa. In the last five weeks of the alpine grazing period the trichostrongyle egg counts increased markedly in the lambs of Group D. Lambs of the control group developed moderate-to-high Haemonchus-infections, and eight animals of this group had to be treated with anthelmintics. Lambs of Group D had gained significantly (P < 0.05) more weight eight weeks after turnout whereas the mean bodyweight stagnated during the last five weeks of the grazing period. The results indicate, that the single administration of 0.3 mg/kg doramectin to lambs and ewes provided good protection against severe infections with gastrointestinal nematodes for a period of approximately eight weeks.  相似文献

Faecal egg count reduction tests (FECRT) were conducted in May 2003 to determine the efficacy of anthelmintics used for treatment against nematode parasites in separately managed sheep and goat flocks at Alemaya University in eastern Ethiopia. These tests revealed high levels of anthelmintic resistance to albendazole, tetramisole, the combination of these two drugs, and to ivermectin in the goat flock (predominantly infected by Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus spp.), whereas all drugs were highly efficacious in the sheep flock. A second FECRT confirmed these observations. Following this, a new management system was implemented on the goat flock for a period of 9 months (January-September 2004) in an attempt to restore the anthelmintic efficacy. This involved a combination of measures: eliminating the existing parasite infections in the goats, exclusion from the traditional goat pastures, and introducing communal grazing of the goats with the university sheep flock and livestock owned by neighbouring small-holder farmers. A second series of FECRTs (Tests 3 and 4) conducted 7 months after this change in management, showed high levels of efficacy to all three drugs (albendazole, tetramisole and ivermectin) in the goat flock. This is the first field study to demonstrate that anthelmintic efficacy in the control of nematode parasites of small ruminants can be restored by exploiting refugia.  相似文献

The seasonal changes in nematode populations of a flock of sheep in the Montreal area were determined using serial fecal egg counts, fecal culture of larvae and necropsy worm counts. It was found that Ostertagia spp.,Nematodirus spp., Trichostrongylus agei, Trichostrongylus spp. and Chabertia ovina over-wintered on pasture and could initiate patent infections the following spring. The development of populations of H. contortus was typical of that seen with most of the other species and was characterized by the following series of events. In early winter when the study was started with stabled pregnant ewes, most of the populations were immature and the egg counts were low and remained so throughout the entire winter. However, in the spring, following lambing, large numbers of adult worms were seen with a consequent decrease in immatures and a sudden increase in egg counts. When the ewes and lambs were pastured together, the egg counts in ewes dropped consequent to “self-cure”, the “spring-rise” providing the major source of overwhelming infections for lambs with deaths by the end of July. As the season progressed larvae taken in by both ewes and lambs did not mature, and by early fall, most of the worm population consisted of immature forms. It appeared that H. contortus could not have more than two generations in ewes or lambs in a single grazing season.  相似文献

The total and differential oocyst counts of the different Eimeria species in the faeces of Norwegian ewes and lambs were investigated at weekly intervals during the grazing period on permanent and new pastures. The total oocyst counts of lambs on permanent pastures were significantly higher than those on new pastures 3–6 weeks after the beginning of the grazing period. This demonstrates that the oocysts had survived the winter in the pasture.Species differentiation indicated that E. ahsata, E. arlongi, E. crandallis, E. ninakohlyakimovae, E. faurei and E. parva are able to survive the winter in the pasture. E. crandallis occurred in the greatest numbers, and this species might be an important contributor to the clinical symptoms which are frequently observed in Norwegian lambs about 2–3 weeks after the beginning of the grazing period. There were on the other hand, indications that E. pallida has little ability to survive the winter in the pasture. The results were generally similar for most of the species during 2 successive years.The total number of oocysts in the faeces of ewes was low on new as well as on permanent pastures, and the species differentiation showed negligible differences. Consequently, it was concluded that the ewes could not be the source of the high oocyst numbers in lambs on the permanent pastures.  相似文献

The pre-weaning production of ewes and lambs in spring on pastures grazed during the previous autumn and early winter by either weaner sheep, adult sheep, or cattle was investigated together with estimating the benefits of pre- and post-lambing drenches to ewes. These treatments were compared with one in which parasitism was uncontrolled in ewes lambing on pastures grazed previously by untreated weaner sheep, and another where parasitism was suppressed by 2-weekly drenching of the weaner sheep and also of the ewes and their lambs. Prior grazing by cattle effectively eliminated infection of pastures with intestinal Trichostrongylus and Nematodirus spp, but less so for Ostertagia spp. Worthwhile reductions in contamination were also achieved by grazing by adult sheep compared with grazing by undrenched weaners. Despite differences in the parasitological status of the pastures, there were no indications that pre-weaning growth rates of lambs were affected. However, wool growth in ewes was reduced by 10 to 20% by parasite infection. Wool growth of ewes on pastures grazed by cattle during the pre-experimental period exceeded that on any other treatment, and was significantly greater than that of ewes on pastures grazed by undrenched weaners. There was no production benefit in giving a pre-lambing drench to ewes on plots contaminated by weaners, or in giving the additional post-lambing drench to ewes grazing on plots contaminated by weaners, adult sheep or cattle.  相似文献

A study on the epidemiology and seasonal dynamics of gastrointestinal nematode infections of sheep was carried out in a semi-arid region of eastern Ethiopia for 2.5 years (May 2003 to September 2005). The experimental flock comprised a total of 60 Black Head Ogaden sheep, consisting of four equal groups of young male and female and old male and female sheep. These grazed on communal pastures together with a larger university flock, as well as with animals owned by neighbouring small-holder farmers. A new experimental flock was established each year of the study. Parasitological data (EPG, faecal culture L3, PCV and FAMACHA estimates) and animal performance (weight change) were recorded each month on all experimental animals. In addition, four tracer lambs were assigned each month to the flock to determine the seasonal patterns of infective larvae acquired from pasture. Results showed distinct seasonal patterns associated with the bi-modal annual rainfall. High levels of infection occurred during the short and long rain seasons with peaks occurring in May and September of each year. Haemonchus contortus was the most prevalent parasite, followed by Trichostrongylus spp., with a number of other nematode species being occasionally recorded. H. contortus showed and increased propensity to undergo arrested development during the dry seasons. Correlations between EPG and PCV, EPG and FAMACHA eye scores, and PCV and FAMACHA eye scores were all highly significant (P<0.001). However, there was no significant association between the EPG and LW of the study animals during each study year. This information will provide a basis for developing epidemiologically based control strategies for gastrointestinal nematode parasites that are appropriate for flocks owned by small-holder farmers of semi-arid areas of eastern Ethiopia.  相似文献

A pen study was conducted to assess the effect of providing daily copper mineral supplement, or copper wire particle (COWP) capsules, on established or incoming mixed nematode infections in young sheep. For lambs with established (6 week old) infections, COWP resulted in 97% and 56% reduction of the adult and early L4 stages of H. contortus, respectively, compared with controls (p<0.001). Additionally there was a 74% reduction in Teladorsagia circumcincta infections in the COWP lambs compared with controls (p<0.01). However, no effect was observed when COWP were given at the commencement of a larval dosing period of 6 weeks. There was no significant effect of copper mineral supplement (given at the recommended rate to prevent Cu deficiency) on either established, or developing parasite infections. In addition, a field trial was conducted on a commercial farm to assess the effects of COWP in the management of recurrent H. contortus infections, but lack of parasites during the grazing season prevented an adequate assessment from being made. These results indicate that there is little, if any, benefit from a parasite control standpoint in recommending copper therapy, specifically to control parasites in Swedish sheep flocks.  相似文献

In order to establish the infection pattern with gastrointestinal nematodes in ruminants in the central Kenya highlands, a study was carried out in 58 smallholder farms. The study involved monthly faecal examinations from sheep, goats and cattle and pasture sampling from eight communal grazing areas. Each month, six Dorper worm-free tracer lambs were introduced and four locally grazed cross-bred sheep were purchased for parasite recovery. The mean faecal egg counts (FEC) for cattle were low throughout the study period, whereas those for sheep and goats showed a seasonal pattern with high levels of infection occurring during the two main rainy seasons, especially in March, April and October. There were significant differences in egg counts over time and among farms. Haemonchus contortus was the most prevalent nematode in the tracer lambs whereas the previously exposed locally grazed sheep had significantly lower numbers of H contortus but significantly higher numbers of Trichostrongylus species The highest levels of infection in the tracer lambs occurred in November 1995 and January, May and June 1996. Based on this study, it is now possible to explore the possibility of using strategic treatments for the control of parasitic gastroenteritis in this area of Kenya.  相似文献

Long-term field studies were conducted on two government managed small ruminant research farms, located in different geo-climatic regions and approximately 300 km separate from each other, on Peninsula Malaysia. The Infoternak trial (48 weeks) and the Chalok trial (43 weeks) each compared nematode parasite control in separately managed groups of young sheep, either short-term rotationally grazed around a suite of 10 paddocks in addition to receiving a daily supplement of Duddingtonia flagrans spores (Fungus Group); or similar groups of sheep being rotationally grazed alone (Control Group). The prevailing weather conditions at Infoternak farm were of below average rainfall conditions for the most of the trial. As a consequence, only very low worm infections (almost exclusively Haemonchus contortus) were acquired by the 17 sets of tracer lambs that grazed sequentially with the experimental lambs. However on all except 2 occasions in the early part of the trial, the mean tracer worm burdens were significantly lower (P < 0.05) and the experimental lambs grew significantly better (P = 0.054) in the Fungus Group. Rainfall at Chalok farm during the course of the trial was also below average. As a consequence infectivity of pastures was assumed to be relatively low based on faecal egg counts (epg) of the experimental sheep, which following an anthelmintic treatment prior to allocation, remained very low in both treatment groups. Faecal egg counts of undosed replacement lambs in the latter half of the Chalok study, showed a progressive increase in the Control Group to levels exceeding 3000 epg, whereas the Fungus Group remained static at approximately 500 epg. These results show that the deployment of the nematophagous fungus, D. flagrans, can improve the level of parasite control of sheep in the tropics above that which can be achieved by the short-term rotational grazing strategy alone.  相似文献

An investigation of sources of helminth infection was carried out on three flocks: a traditional permanent pasture flock (A), one operating a 'clean' grazing system (B), and an East of Scotland College flock (C) which had operated a clean grazing system for nine years. Ewe and lamb worm egg output and pasture larval levels were recorded and tracer lambs were grazed during July and August on each farm. Considerable contamination was present on farm B fields compared with farms A and C, which resulted in higher worm burdens in late summer in farm B tracer lambs and lower weight gains. The main source of this infection was thought to be ewe periparturient egg output, as 21 per cent of ewes had positive worm egg counts over the lambing period. Differences in management practices between farms B and C, eg, earlier stocking of farm B fields, were also considered contributory factors.  相似文献

SUMMARY A study on 3 farms, each having a preventive strategy for the control of nematode infections, determined the risk factors associated with diarrhoea among Merino ewes in winter. Comparisons were made among groups of mated and unmated ewes with and without treatment with controlled-release capsules containing albendazole. Diarrhoea was assessed from the accumulations of faeces around the breech (dag score) and related to worm egg counts, total worm counts and histopathological findings. The overall prevalence of severe dag in ewes not treated with a capsule was 26% (221/844). In comparison, only 2.7% of treated ewes had severe dag. The adjusted odds ratio on each farm indicated that untreated ewes were between 12 and 16 times more likely to be affected with severe dag than ewes treated with a capsule. The effect of lactation was significant on only one farm whereas initial body weight had no significant effect. There was no significant association between worm egg counts and the occurrence of severe dag. There were significantly more eosinophils in the small intestine of ewes affected with severe dag compared with unaffected ewes. There were no significant differences in mast cell and globule leucocyte numbers between affected and unaffected ewes. This study provides strong evidence that the main cause of diarrhoea among Merino ewes grazing winter and early spring pastures is the ingestion of trichostrongylid larvae even by sheep that have a well-developed protective immune response to these parasites. New strategies for the control of nematode infections are needed to prevent diarrhoea and dag formation in adult sheep.  相似文献

An investigation into the population dynamics of sheep nematodes was carried out between April 1970 and September 1971. Faecal egg counts were made from both ewes and lambs at weeks intervals while grass samples were taken fortnightly throughout the summer and monthly during the winter. From these results absolute numbers of nematode eggs and infective larvae were estimated and these figures used as a basis for determining the level of mortality occurring during development from egg to infective larva. The figures were also used to assess the relative importance of the ewe 'spring rise' and the egg output of the lambs in June while grazing contaminated pasture. These calculations suggest that larval mortality was very high and that it may vary considerably from year to year depending upon the climatic conditions prevailing. There was also an indication that the ewe 'spring rise' was the major source of the wave of infection which occurs in the lambs in late August and September.  相似文献

Two flocks of Merino sheep were set-stocked on pastures known to be endemic for Haemonchus contortus. Both flocks included sheep with the three common haemoglobin types (HbAA, HbAB, HbBB). The results of regular monitoring over a two-year period showed a clear relationship between haemoglobin types and susceptibility to haemonchosis. The HbAA sheep experienced fewer deaths, had consistently lower egg counts and exhibited a more frequency and effective self-cure than the HbAB or the HbBB types. Post mortem findings demonstrated that this phenomenon was due to differences in the establishment of adult H contortus and not to suppression of egg laying capacity or an alteration of male to female adult worm ratio.  相似文献

Copper oxide wire particles (COWP) have been used to reduce infection of Haemonchus contortus in hair breed lambs in southeastern USA without signs of copper toxicity. However, copper sensitivity among breeds and regions varies. The objective was to determine the effectiveness and safety of COWP in lactating Polypay ewes and their offspring grazing alfalfa/bluegrass pasture in a rotational grazing system. Mature Polypay ewes were administered 0, 0.5, 1, or 2 g (n=8 or 9/dose) COWP approximately 60 days after lambing in mid-July 2005. Their offspring were administered 0 (n=6), 0.5 or 0.75 g (n=9), 1 or 2 g (n=6) COWP 2 weeks later in late July. The primary gastrointestinal nematode was H. contortus (70%). Between Days 7 and 35, FEC were greater in 0 and 0.5 g COWP groups compared with ewes administered 2 g COWP (COWP x day, P<0.004). PCV decreased in all groups of ewes between Days 0 and 21 (day, P<0.001). Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity, a measure of liver copper levels, and body weight was similar among groups of ewes. FEC decreased within 7 days in COWP-treated compared with untreated lambs and remained low throughout experiment (COWP x day, P<0.05). PCV increased in COWP-treated lambs between Days 7 and 35 and decreased in untreated lambs between Days 0 and 21 (COWP x day, P<0.009). AST activity was similar among groups of lambs. Administration of 2 g COWP to ewes prevented a rise in FEC, but a dose of 0.5 g was ineffective as an anthelmintic. Administration of all doses of COWP to lambs decreased FEC and increased PCV compared to untreated lambs. There were no signs of copper toxicity in ewes or lambs. Alternative suppression of H. contortus infections may be necessary in ewes, but COWP was effective in H. contortus management for lambs.  相似文献

Three worm control strategies, on a commercial farm in south east England, were monitored parasitologically for a grazing season. Three peaks of larval infection in June, late August and late October/early November occurred on paddocks grazed by dosed ewes and lambs on a new ley (preventive strategy). Lambs dosed and moved on to a hay aftermath in July (evasive strategy), had a mean egg count of 2090 by late August, attributable to infection with Haemonchus contortus. Three weekly drenching of lambs (suppressive strategy), suppressed faecal egg counts until September when the treatment interval was extended due to other on-farm commitments. In addition to these observations, autoinfection, with Haemonchus contortus, was seen to occur in lambs grazing summer turnips. An in vitro egg hatch assay, and critical efficacy trial, confirmed the presence of a benzimidazole resistant strain of Haemonchus contortus on this farm.
