Abstract. In northern Europe, rearing of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), in sea cages is a substantial part of fish culture. One of the major constraints for the development of this system in other parts of Europe is the unexplained mortality of fish during the summer. To investigate environmental aspects of this mortality, rainbow trout, cultured in cages in sea water, were monitored from May to October for three successive years. No evidence of bacterial involvement could be found, while water temperature and salinity strongly influence the mortality. This supports the suggestion that the mortality has been caused by patho-physiological changes due to higher metabolic requirements for osmoregulation at elevated water temperature in the saline environment which might result in a dissipation of O2 by CO2 on the hemoglobin.  相似文献

Submicromolar concentrations of tributyltinchloride (TBTC), an organotin compound, is able to impair mitochondrial activity in trout erythrocytes, as detected by ultrastructural transmission electron microscopy investigations and exhibits pro apoptotic activity in a variety of cells including nucleated red blood cells. Here we show that TBTC is able to induce the expression of hsp70 in rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss) erythrocytes in a time- and dose-dependent manner. This induction was demonstrated by quantification of the relative abundance of mRNA, and the synthesis of hsp70 was detected by means of an immunological test. This study could provide a practical assay of environmental stress at sublethal toxicant concentrations.  相似文献

Abstract— Due to species introductions, brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) occur together in many North American streams and typically exhibit a pattern of distribution in which brook charr numerically dominate headwaters and rainbow trout dominate downstream reaches. It has been suggested that 1) the two species compete or 2) the two species do not compete because they are differentially adapted to environmental conditions found in upstream and downstream zones. We assessed whether there were differences in growth and macrohabitat (pool, run and riffle) selection of brook charr and rainbow trout in upper, middle and lower stream zones of a small Pennsylvania stream. Brook charr and rainbow trout placed in replicate paired enclosures set in upstream and downstream reaches showed no significant differences in growth and survival rates upstream, but brook charr had significantly greater growth rates than rainbow trout downstream. Enclosed fish and free-ranging fish both had negative growth rates during the summer. Enclosed fish lost significantly less weight than free-ranging fish. Instantaneous growth rates of free-ranging adult brook charr and rainbow trout from May to August were negative for both species in all stream zones. Underwater observations of adult brook charr and rainbow trout showed both species occurred significantly more often in pool macrohabitats than expected on the basis of macrohabitat availability, except for rainbow trout in the upstream zone. The proportion of pool macrohabitat was not significantly different among stream zones. Brook charr do not appear to be better adapted to upstream environments in Powdermill Run based on growth, survival and macrohabitat selection during summer. Negative biotic interactions acting along with differential environmental adaptations may explain the pattern of distribution of brook charr and rainbow trout in streams, but long-term transplant experiments with additional life stages will be necessary to examine this hypothesis.  相似文献

The mechanisms by which nonnative species establish populations can be classified into two broad categories: they usurp the niches of native species through interspecific competition, or they avoid this intense interspecific competition by making use of minimal niche overlap with the native species. In this study, we considered how a nonnative salmonid species, the rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, established a population in the presence of the native salmonid species, the masu salmon O. masou, in Hokkaido, Japan. Circumstantial field evidence shows that the masu salmon exceeds the rainbow trout in abundance and suggests that these species use different types of cover habitat (rainbow trout abundance increases with increasing abundance of large woody debris aggregates, whereas masu salmon abundance increases with increasing abundance of undercut banks). These results imply that the rainbow trout established a population due to minimal niche overlap with the masu salmon, and not by competitive exclusion of the native species.  相似文献

Farmed rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss and brown trout Salmo trutta were monitored over 3 years for infection with the blood-feeding gill fluke Discocotyle sagittata. Parasite transmission is seasonal: new infections take place during summer/autumn, and transmission is generally negligible during winter/spring. There are 2 sources of infection for naïve fish-of-the-year: limited invasion when fish are in the raceways by riverborne larvae originating external to the farm; and internally, within the farm, when 0+ fish are transferred to ponds previously occupied by older cohorts of infected fish. Thereafter, infection levels continue to increase in rainbow trout primarily through transmission within the farm. Prevalence rose to 100% in 1+ fish by the end of their second summer. In O. mykiss, mean abundance reached 194 worms/host for 1+ fish (up to 489 worms/host) and 160 worms/host for 2+ fish. By contrast, in S. trutta, parasite prevalence never exceeded 85% and, after the first year's invasions, infection levels decreased over time: in 1+ and 2+ brown trout, parasite mean abundance was < 4 (maximum 15) worms/host. We present evidence of the detrimental effects of D. sagittata on the host: high burdens are associated with pale gills, decreased body condition and host mortality. Parasite burdens become overdispersed during the warmer part of the year, as prevalence and mean abundance increase. However, the degree of parasite overdispersion decreases over winter; we cannot distinguish whether decreased aggregation is due to parasite losses from infected fish (including immune-mediated parasite mortality) or parasite-induced host mortality.  相似文献

The infectious salmon anaemia virus (ISAV) has not been observed to cause natural disease in farmed rainbow trout, Onchorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), but may cause high mortality in farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. In this study, ISAV was passaged 10 times in succession by intraperitoneal injections of serum from previous passage into naïve rainbow trout. The serum viraemia was monitored by real‐time qPCR. The rainbow trout in this study became infected but did not develop ISA. No clinical signs were observed in the rainbow trout in any passage, but replication of ISAV was detected from Day 4 post‐infection (p.i.). Neither increased relative virus loads nor histopathological and immunohistochemical findings consistent with ISA were observed. However, the expression of interferon type I and Mx genes were slightly up‐regulated in the hearts of some individual fish at day 17 p.i. Sequencing of all open reading frames in the ISAV genome of the 10th passage revealed two nucleotide mutations, one in segment 6 coding for the haemagglutinin–esterase (HE) and one in segment 1 coding for the basic polymerase 2 (PB2). The mutation in HE resulted in an amino acid substitution T/K312.  相似文献

Triploid hybrids between female rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum) and male brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) were tested for farming performances, with reference to parental species. The main drawback of hybrids lay in embryonic and larval mortalities, amounting to 60% on average, and displaying a large variability between spawns. Further survival was inferior to that of diploid, but similar to that of triploid rainbow trout. Hybrid body weight was intermediate between weights of rainbow and brown trout of the same age, mainly as a consequence of differences in precocious growth. Analysis of relative growth rates from 6 to 18 months showed that hybrids were surpassed by rainbow controls in common rearing, but not in separate rearing. Hybrid behaviour was similar to that of rainbow trout. These results are discussed in the scope of providing fisheries managers with original and sterile game fishes. A number of indicators of reproductive performance were assessed in rainbow trout divergently selected on the basis of their plasma cortisol response to a standardized stressor. For both male and female rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), body weight was significantly related to stress responsiveness. High‐responding (HR) females were significantly heavier than low‐responding (LR) females overall, and HR males were significantly heavier than LR males overall. There was no significant difference in the specific growth rate (SGR) of HR and LR female fish during the experimental period, whereas in contrast the mean SGR of HR males was significantly greater than that of LR males. The divergent confinement‐induced levels of blood cortisol in HR and LR groups were stable for more than 1 year after selection. There was no significant difference in the extent to which confinement stress reduced blood oestradiol‐17β levels in HR and LR females, despite a large difference in relative blood cortisol levels. The onset and rate of ovulation was similar within the HR and LR groups. Differences in fecundity, relative fecundity and egg volume and weight were wholly attributable to the different mean body weights of the HR and LR fish. There was no difference between the sperm counts of HR and LR males. There was significantly higher mortality among eggs derived from HR parents overall between fertilization and hatch, but maximum mean mortality did not exceed 12%. Mean time to eyeing in the HR groups was 224 degree days, and in the LR groups was 244 degree days. Hatching commenced at 344 and 347 degree days in the HR and LR groups, respectively, and was complete within 412 and 416 degree days respectively. Overall, selection for stress responsiveness was associated with no significant benefits or costs in reproductive performance.  相似文献

Abstract. Oxolinic acid (OA), oxytetracyline (OTC) and trimetoprim (TMP) were investigated in whole gutted rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, and in their skin, muscle and blood, at 6, 12 and 18°C. Concentrations of drugs were measured by high-pressure liquid chromatography. It is recommended that withdrawal times for rainbow trout be based on whole gutted rainbow trout and not, as in earlier investigations, from residual concentrations in muscle. Any concentrations in rainbow trout feed were found to be stable during the pelleting process used and up to 81 days after pelleting. The absorption of the drugs in rainbow trout show different temperature dependencies. A quantitative comparison of our overall data from this work with individual results from earlier investigations was undertaken. Suggested withdrawal times for freshwater rainbow trout treated with these drugs are: for OTC, 90 days below 6°C, 70 days between 6 and 12°C and 60 days above 12°C; for TMP, 60 days below 8°C and 40 days above 8°C; for OA, 20 days at approximately 18°C.  相似文献

The current study investigated the effects of oyster mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus, extract on immunological and hematological parameters of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. The fish were fed diets containing 0 (control), 1, and 2% supplementation of the oyster mushroom extract for 6 wk. Blood samples were collected weekly for the first 6 weeks. After 6 wk of feeding, the fish were challenged with Lactococcus garvieae and mortality was recorded. The results of this study showed that feeding rainbow trout an oyster mushroom extract–supplemented diet stimulated phagocytic activity of phagocytic cells, lysozyme activity, and myeloperoxidase activity in serum, but it did not significantly affect the total serum immunoglobulin level. At the same time, a significant increase was found in the number of neutrophils, monocytes, and total white blood cells. Fish fed the diet supplemented with oyster mushroom extract showed reduced mortalities following L. garvieae infection compared with controls. These results show that supplementation of fish diets with oyster mushroom extract at 1 and 2% concentrations significantly imrpoves hematological parameters and modulates the immune response against L. garvieae in rainbow trout.  相似文献

Abstract. The ability of selected strains of Flavobacterium branchiophilum to attach to and colonize the gills of five species of teleosts (four salmonid and one cyprinid) and cause mortality was investigated. In virulence studies with F. branchiophilum strain LAB4a, cumulative mortality was dose-dependent in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), and ranged from 0 to 75%. However, regardless of dose, the relative amount of gill-associated F. branchiophilum antigen increased 1 h after challenge. The gill-associated F. branchiophilum antigen in fish which survived (moribund fish) increased by four to six times compared to that detected on the gills 1 h after challenge. The gill-associated antigen on moribund fish was not significantly different from that on the gills of dead fish. Flavobacterium branchiophilum strain LAB4a also attached to the gills of brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchell), rainbow trout, chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), and common shiners, Luxilus cornutus (Mitchell), following a 1-h bath exposure, and caused mortality in all species. The virulence of eight strains of F. branchiophilum for rainbow trout was examined. Both virulent and avirulent strains adhered to the gills following bath exposure (fimbriae were observed on all strains), but only virulent strains had the capacity to further colonize the gills and cause mortality.  相似文献

The non‐native rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) has been introduced worldwide for angling purposes and has established self‐reproducing populations in many parts of the world. Introduced rainbow trout often have negative effects on the native salmonid species, ranging from decrease abundance, growth and survival, to their local extinction. Assessing the effects of introduced rainbow trout on the native species is thus crucial to better set up conservation programmes. In this study, we investigated the effects of non‐native rainbow trout on the diet of native marble trout (Salmo marmoratus) living in the Idrijca River (Slovenia). An impassable waterfall separates the stream in two sectors only a few hundred metres apart: a downstream sector (treatment) in which marble trout live in sympatry (MTs) with rainbow trout (RTs) and an upstream sector (control) in which marble trout live in allopatry (MTa). Specifically, we investigated using stable isotopes the effects of rainbow trout on dietary niche, diet composition, body condition, and lipid content of marble trout. We found dietary niche expansion and niche shift in marble trout living in sympatry with rainbow trout. Compared to MTa, MTs had higher piscivory rate and showed higher body condition and prereproduction lipid content. Our results indicate that the presence of rainbow trout did not have negative effects on marble trout diet and condition and that changes in dietary niche of marble trout are likely to be an adaptive response to the presence of rainbow trout, and further research is needed to better understand.  相似文献

Coldwater Vibrio species isolated from Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., during winter ulcer disease outbreaks at saltwater sites in Norway and Iceland were characterized phenotypically, tested for virulence, and used to evaluate the efficacy of multivalent, oil-adjuvanted vaccines. The intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), in fresh water with one bacteria species isolated during winter ulcer outbreaks, V. ‘viscosus’, produced rapid mortality and disease signs which resembled those observed during natural outbreaks [105 colony-forming units (cfu) fish??1]. Another species, V. ‘wodanis’, was not virulent to rainbow trout (103–106 cfu fish??1). Although vaccination of rainbow trout with a mineral-oil-adjuvanted, injectable vaccine containing V. anguillarum (serotypes 01 and 02), V. salmonicida and Aeromonas salmonicida did not provide protection against injection challenge with V. viscosus, vaccines which included V. viscosus produced significant protection in Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout. Atlantic salmon vaccinated with an oil-adjuvanted vaccine containing V. viscosus, V. wodanis and atypical A. salmonicida produced a relative percentage survival (RPS) of 97% when challenged i.p. with V. viscosus, demonstrating cross-protection between strains from Iceland and Norway. Short-term efficacy was demonstrated in rainbow trout by injection challenge at 21 and 43 days post-vaccination with an oil-adjuvanted vaccine containing V. viscosus, V. anguillarum (01/02), V. salmonicida and A. salmonicida, which produced an RPS of 96–99%. Rainbow trout challenged with V. viscosus at 52 and 362 days post-vaccination produced an RPS of 93% and 79%, indicating that vaccination provided long-term protection. In a similar manner, rainbow trout injected i.p. with 0.2 mL of a vaccine containing the five bacteria species and infectious pancreatic necrosis virus produced a 90% RPS when challenged with V. viscosus 66 days later. The high RPS under a severe challenge burden, along with disease signs in experimental freshwater challenges which resembled the saltwater disease condition, indicated that V. viscosus is a contributing factor to winter ulcer and that vaccination will protect against the disease.  相似文献

A new skin condition, known as puffy skin disease (PSD), emerged in farmed rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) in 2002. The number of new cases increased considerably from 2006. Clinical signs include white or grey skin patches, which become raised and red with excessive mucous production and scale loss. Fish are inappetant and lose condition. Histologically, the key feature is epithelial hyperplasia. We undertook a questionnaire study of trout farmers in England and Wales to investigate prevalence and risk factors. PSD was reported on 37% (n = 49) of rainbow trout sites, located in 28 river catchments. The increase in cases from 2006 onwards was mirrored by the increase in red mark syndrome (RMS). Prevalence and severity of PSD were highest in the summer months. The presence of PSD was associated with RMS (OR = 9.7, P < 0.001). Sites receiving live rainbow trout in the previous 12 months were considerably more likely to have PSD (OR = 5.3. P < 0.01), which suggests an infectious aetiology. The size of affected fish and prevalence varied between farms, indicating that farm‐level factors are important. Future research should further investigate the aetiology of PSD and practices to manage the disease.  相似文献

Puffy skin disease (PSD) is a disease that causes skin pathology in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum). Incidence of PSD in UK fish farms and fisheries has increased sharply in the last decade, with growing concern from both industry sectors. This paper provides the first comprehensive case definition of PSD, combining clinical and pathological observations of diseased rainbow trout from both fish farms and fisheries. The defining features of PSD, as summarized in the case definition, were focal lateral flank skin lesions that appeared as cutaneous swelling with pigment loss and petechiae. These were associated with lethargy, poor body condition, inappetance and low level mortality. Epidermal hyperplasia and spongiosis, oedema of the dermis stratum spongiosum and a mild diffuse inflammatory cellularity were typical in histopathology of skin. A specific pathogen or aetiology was not identified. Prevalence and severity of skin lesions was greatest during late summer and autumn, with the highest prevalence being 95%. Atypical lesions seen in winter and spring were suggestive of clinical resolution. PSD holds important implications for both trout aquaculture and still water trout fisheries. This case definition will aid future diagnosis, help avoid confusion with other skin conditions and promote prompt and consistent reporting.  相似文献

Feeds formulated with 5.7, 11.4 and 22.7% spray-dried blood powder, also called blood flour (88.1% protein, 0.2% total phosphorus), were compared with a control diet with 49% herring meal (64% protein, 2.1% total phosphorus) and no blood powder for rearing juvenile rainbow trout. Oncorhynchus my kiss (Walbaum). Diets with 5.7, 11.4 and 22.7% blood powder contained 1.22,1.03 and 0.84% phosphorus, respectively, compared with 1.36% phosphorus in the control diet. Over 12 weeks, differences in mean specific growth (range 2.23-2.35 day?1) or feed conversion (range 1.04-1.09) among the four diets were not significant (P > 0.05). Apparent digestibility of phosphorus in the diet with 22.7% blood powder was greater (45.2%) than that in the control diet (31.6%). Increases in phosphorus concentrations in the water in which trout were fed diets with blood powder (range 16-20 μg?1 total phosphorus) were 33-47% less (P<0.05) than in tanks where trout were fed the control diet (30μg?1 total phosphorus). Feed formulations for rainbow trout prepared with 22.7% blood powder and 17.0% fish meal would contain 65.3% less fish meal and 38% less total phosphorus than present in the control diet, which was a representation of a modern feed formulation for rainbow trout.  相似文献

Rainbow trout habitat use is often described in high‐gradient, runoff‐driven, heterotrophic streams where geomorphic features and overhanging riparian vegetation provide channel complexity and cover. However, many rainbow trout populations thrive in rivers with contrasting aquatic habitat. We describe rainbow trout habitat use in a low‐gradient, groundwater‐dominated tailwater river where river flow management and macrophyte growth and senescence largely govern available trout habitat. In the summers of 2013 and 2014, available aquatic habitat (depth, velocity, macrophyte cover, substrate size) was quantified, while individual trout location was determined by radio telemetry and linked to environmental variables. Detailed habitat surveys indicate that macrophyte cover increases throughout the summer and is a strong determinant of in‐stream habitat characteristics. Paired logistic regression shows that adult rainbow trout prefer greater depths. Water depth increases with macrophyte abundance at both reach and local scales as plants restrict flow, and available trout habitat is linked to this seasonal pattern. When macrophyte abundance is high, adult trout show secondary preference for localised areas of lower macrophyte cover but otherwise show no selectivity for macrophyte cover, velocity or substrate size. Results suggest that submerged aquatic plants increased the quantity and quality of rainbow trout habitat as a source of channel complexity and cover. Macrophytes may play a similar role in other low‐gradient streams and should not be overlooked by fisheries managers considering habitat suitability.  相似文献

Abstract Dam removal has been increasingly proposed as a river restoration technique. In 2011, two large hydroelectric dams will be removed from Washington State’s Elwha River. Ten anadromous fish populations are expected to recolonise historical habitats after dam removal. A key to understanding watershed recolonisation is the collection of spatially continuous information on fish and aquatic habitats. A riverscape approach with an emphasis on biological data has rarely been applied in mid‐sized, wilderness rivers, particularly in consecutive years prior to dam removal. Concurrent snorkel and habitat surveys were conducted from the headwaters to the mouth (rkm 65–0) of the Elwha River in 2007 and 2008. This riverscape approach characterised the spatial extent, assemblage structure and patterns of relative density of Pacific salmonids. The presence of dams influenced the longitudinal patterns of fish assemblages, and species richness was the highest downstream of the dams, where anadromous salmonids still have access. The percent composition of salmonids was similar in both years for rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), coastal cutthroat trout, Oncorhynchus clarkii clarkii (Richardson) (89%; 88%), Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum) (8%; 9%), and bull trout, Salvelinus confluentus (Suckley) (3% in both years). Spatial patterns of abundance for rainbow and cutthroat trout (r = 0.76) and bull trout (r = 0.70) were also consistent between years. Multivariate and univariate methods detected differences in habitat structure along the river profile caused by natural and anthropogenic factors. The riverscape view highlighted species‐specific biological hotspots and revealed that 60–69% of federally threatened bull trout occurred near or below the dams. Spatially continuous surveys will be vital in evaluating the effectiveness of upcoming dam removal projects at restoring anadromous salmonids.  相似文献

Although non‐native species can sometimes threaten the value of ecosystem services, their presence can contribute to the benefits derived from the environment. In the Great Lakes, non‐native brown trout (Salmo trutta) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) support substantial recreational fisheries. With current efforts underway to restore once‐native Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) to Lake Ontario, there is some concern that Atlantic salmon will impede non‐native contributions to the recreational fishery because Atlantic salmon exhibit niche overlap with brown trout and rainbow trout, particularly during the juvenile life stage. We therefore examined competition and growth of juvenile Atlantic salmon, brown trout and rainbow trout in semi‐natural streams. We found that brown trout were the most dominant and had the greatest growth rate regardless of what other species were present. Rainbow trout were more dominant than Atlantic salmon and consumed the most food of the three species. However, in the presence of brown trout, rainbow trout fed less frequently and exhibited negative growth as compared to when the rainbow trout were present with only Atlantic salmon. These data suggest that, outside of density‐dependent effects, Atlantic salmon will not impact stream production of brown trout and rainbow trout.  相似文献

In this study, next generation sequencing (NGS) was used to survey the 16S rRNA ribotypes of the distal intestinal lumen and mucosal epithelium of farmed rainbow trout. This approach yielded a library consisting of 2 979 715 quality filtered paired sequences, assigned to genus level of taxonomy using the Ribosomal Database Project (RDP). A high level of diversity was observed in both regions. A total of 90 bacterial genera were identified in the lumen of all fish sampled, compared with 159 in the mucosa. The allochthonous microflora was dominated by sequences belonging to the γ Proteobacteria (mean sequence abundance 54.3%), in particular the Enterobacteriaceae, with Yersinia, Serratia, Hafnia and Obesumbacterium the most abundant genera. Fewer γ Proteobacteria (mean sequence abundance 37%) were present in the mucosa, and autochthonous communities consisted of a more even split among the bacterial classes, with increases in sequences assigned to members of the β Proteobacteria (mean sequence abundance 18.4%) and Bacilli (mean sequence abundance 16.8%). The principal bacterial genera recorded in the mucosa were Cetobacterium, Yersinia, Ralstonia, Hafnia and Carnobacterium. The results of this study demonstrate that the luminal and mucosal bacterial communities may be different in their respective structures, and that the mucosal microflora of rainbow trout may be more diverse than previous research has suggested. This research also demonstrated a degree of conservation of bacterial genera between individual fish sampled, and is to the author's knowledge the first time the MiSeq® NGS platform has been used to explore the rainbow trout intestinal microflora.  相似文献
