Purpose  

The Ethiopian highlands are a fragile environment characterized by steep slopes, intense rainfall, a sparse vegetation cover, and the occurrence of flash floods. Although important efforts have been made to mitigate the ongoing soil erosion and land degradation problems, the sediment dynamics at medium-sized catchment scale (100–10,000 km2) are not fully understood. Therefore, this study aims to provide a better understanding of sediment export processes and the importance of flash flood events in semi-arid tropical catchments.  相似文献

On the basis of soil studies along routes and on key plots, 35 new areas of soils with definite features of vertigenesis have been identified in Belgorod and Voronezh oblasts and in the northern part of Volgograd oblast (in the Don River basin). Earlier, vertic soils were not noted for these areas. In the studied region, their portion in the soil cover is much less than 1%. All the delineated areas of vertic soils are confined to the outcrops of swelling clay materials of different origins (marine, lacustrine, glacial, and colluvial sediments) and ages (Quaternary or Tertiary) that may be found in four landscape positions: (1) in the deep closed depressions within vast flat watersheds; (2) in the bottoms of wide hollows on interfluvial slopes and, sometimes, on steeper slopes of local ravines; (3) in the hydromorphic solonetzic soil complexes, and (4) on step-like interfluvial surfaces with the outcrops of Tertiary clays. Within the studied areas, soils with different degrees of expression (six grades) of vertic properties are present. These soils belong to the type of dark vertic soils proper and to vertic subtypes of different soil types according to the Russian soil classification system; according to the WRB system, they belong to Vertisols proper and to reference soil units with a Vertic prefix in the groups of Chernozems, Phaeozems, and Solonetzes. Statistical data on the morphometric indices of the vertic properties (the depth and thickness of the soil horizons with slickensides, a wedge-shaped structure, and cracks filled with material from the upper horizons) and the depth and thickness of the Vertic horizon are analyzed.  相似文献

Variations of soil nutrient and organic matter content along tidal gradients of a small mangrove forest in Hong Kong were investigated. Effects of sampling months on nutrient status were also analysed. Two transects, A and B, were established perpendicular to the shoreline. Transect A transverse a wider band of vegetation and was less disturbed by human activities; while Transect B was close to human settlement and all mangrove plants were more frequently flooded by incoming and outgoing tides. Surface soils at 5 and 10 m intervals along Transects A and B, respectively, were collected in December 1989, March 1990, July 1990 and September 1990. Concentrations of soil organic matter, total and extractable nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were high in landward sites and decreased gradually along tidal gradients; while pH and salinity increased with distance from landward to seaward sites. These trends along tidal gradients indicate the importance of tidal frequency and amplitude on soil properties. Significant differences in soil properties were also found between two transects. Transect A had significantly higher organic matter and nutrient content than Transect B. In both transects, there were sites with extraordinarily high levels of nutrients and organic matter (5–10 times higher than the average values) suggesting local contamination. Most of these contaminated sites were located at the landward edges. Positive correlations between organic matter, N, P and K content were found suggesting that these nutrients were from similar input sources. Variations along tidal gradients and local contaminated sites at the landward edges suggest that human discharges, litter deposition and surface runoff were major nutrient inputs. In both transects, no definite seasonal periodicity was found and temporal variations existed in a more random manner than variations along tidal gradients.  相似文献

This article deals with flood events in Mediterranean ephemeral streams typical of the Valencia region. The combination of the basin physical characteristics (steep slopes, sparse vegetation, thin soils and permeable rock) and intense, heavy and irregularly distributed rain, generates flash floods. Runoff generation is sudden, giving rise to flash floods with sharp, narrow hydrographs with short time lags. The high amount of runoff is, nevertheless, only a small fraction of the total rainfall, since the characteristics of the river basins are such that infiltration of large amounts of water occurs. Using daily hydrological data from the Rambla de la Viuda basin and 5-min data from both the Barranc del Carraixet and the Rambla de Poyo basins, the rainfall–runoff processes have been analysed during flood events in these ephemeral streams.  相似文献

为了解黄土区坡面土壤水分的空间分布,于2010年5月初选择宁夏固原云雾山2个典型草坡上利用多电极电阻仪法(ERT)测定了土壤电阻率的坡面空间分布。分别在长约400m的东南坡向坡面和圆丘坡面的4个长约100m坡向上设置纵向样线,并在样线上多点同步地测定了土壤含水率和电阻率,结果表明:土壤电阻率沿纵向坡面的空间连续性和变异性总体较好,阴坡半阴坡(西北、东北)的土壤电阻率小于阳坡半阳坡(东南、西南),并随土层深度增加而逐渐增大。同时,土壤电阻率随着体积含水率增大而几乎线性降低,其相关关系较好,说明利用土壤电阻仪测定值计算土壤含水率的空间连续发布是定量了解黄土坡面土壤水分空间分布非破坏性的一个适合技术途径。  相似文献

The watersheds at Bear Creek, Oak Ridge, TN, have similar soil–landscape relationships. The lower reaches of many of these watersheds consist of headwater riparian wetlands situated between sloping non-wetland upland zones. The objectives of this study are to examine the effects of (i) slope and geomorphic processes, (ii) human impacts, and (iii) particular characteristics of soils and saprolite that may effect drainage and water movement in the wetlands and adjacent landscapes in one of these watersheds. A transect was run from west to east in a hydrological monitored area at the lower reaches of a watershed on Bear Creek. This transect extended from a steep side slope position across a floodplain, a terrace, and a shoulder slope. On the upland positions of the Nolichucky Shale, mass wasting, overland flow and soil creep currently inhibit soil formation on the steep side slope position where a Typic Dystrudept is present, while soil stability on the shoulder slope has resulted in the formation of a well-developed Typic Hapludult. In these soils, argillic horizons occur above C horizons on less sloping gradients in comparison to steeper slopes, which have Bw horizons over Cr (saprolite) material. A riparian wetland area occupies the floodplain section, where a Typic Endoaquept is characterized by poorly drained conditions that led to the development of redoximorphic features (mottling), gleying, organic matter accumulation, and minimal development of subsurface horizons. A thin colluvial deposit overlies a thick well developed Aquic Hapludalf that formed in alluvial sediments on the terrace position. The colluvial deposit from the adjacent shoulder slope is thought to result from soil creep and anthropogenic erosion caused by past cultivation practices. Runoff from the adjacent sloping landscape and groundwater from the adjacent wetland area perhaps contribute to the somewhat poorly drained conditions of this profile. Perched watertables occur in upland positions due to dense saprolite and clay plugging in the shallow zones of the saprolite. However, no redoximorphic features are observed in the soil on the side slope due to high runoff. Remnants of the underlying shale saprolite, which occur as small discolored zones resembling mottles, are also present. The soils in the study have a CEC of <10 cmol kg−1, silt loam textures and Fed values of 0.5–4.3%. These soils are also mainly acidic and low in total carbon.  相似文献

Abstract

In Indonesia, stevia (Stevia rebaudiana Bert. M.) is generally grown in mountainous area with relatively steep slopes. Although this plant has low nutrient requirements, soil development on different slope positions may significantly affect plant growth. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to study the effect of slope position on dry weight production of stevia grown on an Inceptisol (Brown Andosol). Slope position was found to have a significant effect on the production of stevia. Dry weight of stevia shoots at each slope position was significantly different with respect to harvesting period. The plants on the lower part of the transect slope tended to yield greater dry matter contents than those in the upper or middle parts of the slope.  相似文献

Two methods are described for locating soil boundaries on transects from multivariate data. One method (split moving-window, SMW) examines a transect through a window which is split at its mid point and the two halves compared. The window is moved along the transect and a boundary inferred wherever the difference between the two halves attains a local maximum. The other (maximum level-variance, MLV) examines all possible partitions of a transect that can be produced by a given number of boundaries or less and places boundaries in those positions that minimize the within-segment sum of squared deviations from the segment means (and hence maximize the between-segment sum of squares). The performances of the two methods are compared for two soil transects in Oxfordshire. MLV identified all major changes even where gradual, but was less reliable for small changes. SMW identified all sharp boundaries, even between soil types that are fairly similar. In its original form SMW did not identify gradual changes reliably, but its performance was improved both by omitting data near the centre of the window and by concentrating the discriminating power of the data beforehand as in MLV. Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine how different afforestation strategies and slope positions affect soil organic carbon and total nitrogen. In a unique steepland formerly used as farmland in the Yangjuangou watershed of the Loess Plateau, three adjacent afforestation transects were selected as the sampling site: two single-species transects (Hippophae rhammoides and Artemisia capillaris), which each represented the single-species afforestation mode, and one mixed-species transect, which represented the multi-species afforestation mode. The results indicated that: (1) The soil organic carbon concentration in the multi-species afforestation mode was 25.8% and 27.7% higher than that in the other two single-species afforestation modes, while a minute difference in total nitrogen concentration was detected among the three afforestation transects. (2) Within the mixed-species and Hippophae rhammoides transect, both the soil organic carbon and total nitrogen concentrations showed an increasing trend from the upper slope position to the foot slope position. However, the soil organic carbon in the Artemisia capillaris transect was higher in the foot slope and upper slope but lower in the middle slope, demonstrating a “V” shape, and the total nitrogen increased from the foot slope position to the upper slope position. (3) The carbon : nitrogen ratios were no more than 10:1, which indicated the presence of easily decomposable soil organic matter. This study demonstrated the multi-species afforestation mode has better carbon accumulation potential compared with the single-species afforestation mode, which has important and informative implications for future vegetation restoration practices in the Loess Plateau and similar semi-arid environments.  相似文献

The problem of gully erosion is very severe in the riparian areas of the alluvial deep soil region in India. Research and development have progressed in response to the change in social needs. The earlier strategy of maintenance of law and order has changed to one of reclamation and restoration of the productive capacity of riparian areas. Watershed management in the ravines has been adopted for development of food security, eco‐restoration and pollution control. Case studies on the watershed management in watersheds projects initiated in the mid‐1980s revealed the scope for bringing increased prosperity through crop diversification and eco‐restoration. In consideration of the erosion process, new concepts of management zones and improved conservation and reclamation practices have been developed. The sociological factors have been rationally analysed, as they applied to watershed management in the ravines. A new paradigm of watershed management by group action is necessary in the future. Since the ways of combating the ravine problem and enhancing the productivity of ravine‐degraded lands were made on rational process‐based approach, there is scope for it to be implemented in other countries with similar land and socio‐economic situations. The Late Holocene stage of forest pedogenesis has been studied on the interfluves along river valleys in the forest-steppe zone of the Central Russian Upland. The development of gray forest soils from the former chernozems as a result of the Late Holocene advance of forest vegetation over steppes is discussed. It is argued that the climatic conditions of the Subatlantic period were unstable, so that multiple alternation of forest and steppe vegetation communities took place. This specified a complex character of soil evolution upon contrasting substitution of forest pedogenesis for steppe pedogenesis. On the interfluves near the natural drainage network (balkas, ravines, and steep slopes of river valleys), the climate-driven dynamics of forest and steppe vegetation with corresponding changes in the character of pedogenesis could take place during the entire Holocene, which is reflected in a lower thickness of humus profiles and deeper leaching of carbonates from chernozems of the Early Iron Age in comparison with their analogues formed under steppe cenoses in central parts of the interfluves. Two variants of the evolution of gray forest soils can be suggested: the pulsating evolution typical of balkas and interfluves near river valleys and the continuous progressive evolution typical of automorphic (plakor) positions in central parts of the interfluves.  相似文献

Soil crusting and infiltration on steep slopes in northern Thailand   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13  
Predicting the rate at which rain infiltrates on steep slopes is very uncertain. There is no consistent information in the literature. We have therefore related infiltrability to slope gradient under field conditions by experimenting on a gravelly loamy soil occupying the upper half of a cultivated convex hill in northern Thailand. Fifteen 1 m × 1 m plots with slope gradients ranging from 16 to 63% were established, and simulated rain was allowed to fall on them at controlled rates and for fixed times. We obtained the following results. The surface fell 0.4–7.2 mm due to compaction and soil loss. The proportions of crust (0–40%) and embedded gravel (10–60%), the runoff coefficient (0.05–0.78 mm mm?1), the mean sediment concentrations (0–5.6 g l?1), and soil detachment (10–313 g m?2) were more pronounced on the gentle slopes than on the steep ones. The steady final infiltration rate (1–107 mm hour?1) increased sharply with increasing slope gradient. Microaggregates tended to behave like sand and become tightly packed on gentle slopes (packing crust). These results suggest that the vertical component of kinetic energy, which is greater on gentle slopes, has a dominant role. Nevertheless, the differences in compaction and in sediment concentration could not be ascribed to the vertical component of kinetic energy alone. On steep slopes the horizontal component of the kinetic energy is transformed into shear stress, hampering the development of crusts so that water can still infiltrate. On steeper slopes, the water film was thinner, thereby limiting the role of splash. We conclude that the relationship between slope gradient and infiltrability depends on the nature of the soil and must be examined in the light of surface crusting processes.  相似文献

陕西省是我国水土流失最严重的地区之一,利用第一次全国水利普查水土保持调查专项数据,抽取横向7条、纵向2条典型样带,共314个调查单元,对比分析了陕西省坡度、坡长、土地利用类型对土壤侵蚀影响的区域差异。结果表明:(1)横向样带自北向南坡度均值先减小后增大,黄土高原地区坡度 < 20°和 > 30°的地块土壤侵蚀模数高于其他地区;整体来看,陕西省土壤侵蚀的临界坡度在15°~30°;(2)随坡长的增加,土壤侵蚀模数整体呈波动增长,10~20 m和 > 30 m坡长范围内,黄土高原地区土壤侵蚀最为严重;(3)耕地、园地土壤侵蚀模数高于林地、草地,耕地与园地土壤侵蚀模数自北向南呈增—减—增的变化特征;(4)区域对比来看,自北向南土壤侵蚀模数先减小后增大,侵蚀强度从大到小依次为黄土高原区、秦巴山地区、关中平原区;纵向样带土壤侵蚀模数均在1 000 t/(km2·a)左右。研究结果为认识陕西省土壤侵蚀因子区域差异,明确水土流失空间分异规律,因地制宜地制定水土保持规划提供了重要依据。  相似文献

The characteristics of isoproturon [3-(4-isopropylphenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea] metabolism were investigated in soil taken from two transects within a single field. Along transect 1, complete degradation of the parent compound occurred within 18 days, and over 40% of ring C had been metabolised after 65 days. In these soils, both side chain and ring metabolism had a short lag phase, followed by a period of rapid degradation. Along transect 2, the rate of side chain metabolism was highly variable, and 20% of ring C had been metabolised after 65 days. The dynamics of isoproturon ring C metabolism were typical of cometabolic degradation, even at sites in which enhanced side chain metabolism occurred. Isoproturon degrading organisms were found in similar numbers in soil from the two transects prior to isoproturon application. In soils from transect 1, there was considerable proliferation of degrader organisms during the lag phase, in which 40% of the isoproturon was degraded. In most soils from transect 2, there had been no proliferation of isoproturon metabolising organisms at the point of 40% metabolism. Before enhanced degradation could develop, there was clearly a requirement for the isoproturon metabolising community to reach a threshold size. Immobilisation of isoproturon ring C into the microbial biomass and formation of bound residues was lower in soil from transect 2 relative to soil from transect 1. We conclude that the in-field spatial heterogeneity of isoproturon side chain and ring metabolism, the formation of bound residues and the immobilisation of pesticide residues in the biomass, results from variation in the development and significance of growth linked and cometabolic degradation.  相似文献

应用第一次全国水利普查水土保持专项数据,分析了喀斯特地区实际土地利用单元地块空间统计特征及相应侵蚀规律。结果表明:喀斯特地区土地利用类型以林地、耕地为主,共占调查总面积的86.2%。由于地形破碎,地势陡峭,土地表现出破碎化特征,地块面积、坡长、坡度均值分别为3.45hm~2,45.3 m,21.7°。坡度对土壤侵蚀的影响大于坡长,陡坡耕作是导致耕地土壤侵蚀严重的主要原因,68.6%的耕地位于陡坡,其侵蚀量占总侵蚀量的65.6%。贵州省土壤侵蚀程度由西向东递减,以黔西南地区侵蚀最为严重。工程措施能够有效防治土壤侵蚀,减沙效益在75%以上,但随坡度增大而减小,林草地减沙效益优于工程措施。在区域水土保持规划时,应重点考虑土壤侵蚀强烈地区,减少陡坡耕作,推广还林还草。  相似文献

A major problem in soil classification for soil survey is the lack, or uncertainty, of correspondence between mapping units in different localities. The problem is examined using multivariate soil data recorded at short regular intervals along transects in Oxfordshire and Aberdeenshire. The data for each transect were transformed to canonical variates, the first two of which were then used to locate soil boundaries and to show the relationships among the sampling points in that projection of the character space. With few exceptions, the sampling points in adjacent segments on all three transects lay in different parts of the canonical variate (CV) plane, showing that the boundaries were well defined. On the transect near Witney, Oxfordshire, distant segments either occupied distinct parts of the CV plane, or were superimposed on it. For the other two transects the portions of the CV plane occupied by some segments overlapped only partially the space occupied by one or more other segments that were not contiguous on the transects. The results show that on two of the three examples, lack of correspondence between mapping classes in different localities is already present in small tracts of country.  相似文献

Survey and monitoring rangelands projects is one the important plans in rangelands management. For this purpose, the survey and monitoring methods could be time-consuming and costly. Sampling strategies of plant patches are effective in sampling procedures that cause minimizing sampling variance and time. In this study, for decreasing sampling time and cost, increasing speed, plant patches parameters (including length, width, height, area, and distance between the patches) were compared. Three transects with 50 m length at three aspect slopes were located randomly systematic at the selected site with different grazing intensities. Soil samples for nitrate (NO3?), total nitrogen (TN), ammonium (NH4+), phosphorus (P), sodium absorption ration (SAR), soil acidity or soil reaction (pH), sodium (Na), electrical conductivity (EC), organic carbon (OC), and potassium (K) content were taken in these transects. The data were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA), and the average of the measured parameters in the transects was compared by Duncan Multiple Range test using SPSS16 software. The soil characteristics compared between the regions were analyzed with Discriminant Function Analysis using STATISTICA10 software. Results showed that the transect slope aspect and soil characteristics had an effect on measured parameters. It was suggested to withdraw the located transect at one of the North or South and West or East Slope aspects for increasing sampling efficiency. It was also suggested that to avoid time consumtion, sampling can be recorded on plant patches’ width instead of area. It is also suggested that it would be better to record the length of the plant patches instead of their area in the non-grazed zones and record the length and the width of the plant patches in the moderate- and the high-grazed zones.  相似文献

骤发干旱是近年来全球不同地区频繁发生的极端事件,与缓慢干旱相比,其爆发异常迅速,严重威胁粮食农业安全和生态环境健康。为探究骤发与缓慢干旱的时空特征,该研究基于再分析产品土壤含水率数据,提取中国1979-2018年干旱事件及旱情开始阶段历时,分析骤发干旱与缓慢干旱在发生频次、影响范围上的差异,并以典型干旱事件为例,探讨二者的联系。结果表明:1)总体上,中国干旱事件呈长历时、大范围的发展趋势;2)旱情开始阶段的分析表明,中国南方地区开始历时总体比北方偏短,典型骤旱事件主要集中在内蒙古中东部、西南地区、珠江上游以及长江下游;缓慢干旱则主要集中在西北、新疆地区,并且其覆盖范围在2005年以后增幅明显;3)近10年2场典型干旱事件的时空演变轨迹表明,骤发干旱与缓慢干旱在旱情演进过程中无明显界限,二者既可以独立存在,也可能相伴发生。该研究可为认识干旱形成机理以及旱情监测技术的发展提供参考。  相似文献

The upscaling of soil‐ecological processes to larger landscape units represents a special challenge to soil ecology. Results from micro‐ or mesocosms cannot easily be transferred to other scales because effects are often scale‐dependent. In this context, field experiments which take into account the heterogeneity of the landscape may be promising. Therefore, we carried out an experiment based on a transect study in the agrolandscape of NE Germany on heterogeneous sandy soil in which the feeding activity of the soil‐organism community was assessed by means of the bait‐lamina test at each of the 101 transect locations. At every 4th position, prior to the measurement the soil biota were stimulated by a treatment consisting of adding easily available C and water to the soil. Our aim was to test whether this kind of spatial approach enables to separate effects induced by treatments from landscape effects. The results showed a highly variable feeding activity along the transect after 4 weeks. Despite this variability, a basic trend could be identified which was related to a landscape factor, i.e., the relief. On upper‐slope positions, the feeding activity tended to be less in comparison to positions down‐slope. At every 4th position of the transect, the stimulating effect of the substrate and water addition could be clearly detected and quantified with spectral and cross‐spectral analysis. It is concluded that effects of treatments in heterogeneous landscapes may be distinguished from site effects when the signal‐to‐noise ratio is high and soil and treatment effects on the variable of interest are sufficiently different from one another. In a heterogeneous landscape with gradients of site properties, a treatment based on the frequency domain and applied in regular intervals can be distinguished with spectral analysis techniques.  相似文献
