AIM: To estimate the prevalence of Neospora infection in a sample of New Zealand beef cattle. METHODS: The prevalence of Neospora caninum infection in New Zealand beef cattle was estimated by collecting blood at slaughter from 499 beef cattle from 40 different farms at 2 slaughter plants in the North Island and 1 in the lower South Island . Sera were tested using an ELISA against Neospora tachyzoite antigen. RESULTS: The prevalence of seropositive cattle was 2.5% (n=120), 3.6% (n=166) and 2.3% (n=213) at the plants surveyed, the overall prevalence being 2.8%. The serologically positive cattle came from 9 farms, 3 of which had more than 1 positive animal. The highest prevalence recorded amongst animals from 1 farm was 4/13 (31%), in a group of young steers. CONCLUSION: Neosporosis appears to be present at a lower level in the New Zealand beef cattle population than in the New Zealand dairy cattle population. Nevertheless, from the high seroprevalence evident amongst young cattle on 1 farm, we suggest that Neospora may be a cause of infertility in beef cattle in this country.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine effects of vaccination prior to transit and prophylactic administration of florfenicol at time of arrival at a feedyard on health of cattle and colonization of the nasopharynx by Mannheimia haemolytica (MH). ANIMALS: 121 steers from Tennessee and 84 steers from New Mexico. PROCEDURE: Half of the steers were vaccinated before transport to a feedyard. Steers from Tennessee were vaccinated with MH bacterin-toxoid, and steers from New Mexico were vaccinated intranasally with modified-live leukotoxin-deficient MH. Half of the vaccinates and nonvaccinates were randomly selected to receive florfenicol on arrival at the feedyard. Steers were observed daily for respiratory tract disease (RTD). RESULTS: Administration of florfenicol at time of arrival reduced the incidence of RTD, delayed the interval before onset of RTD, and reduced the incidence of MH colonization of the nasopharynx for at least 4 days, but vaccination did not have any effect. Vaccination elicited an increase in serum antibody titers to MH. Administration of florfenicol at time of arrival reduced the development of serum antibody titers in intranasally vaccinated steers and both groups of nonvaccinated steers, but intranasal vaccination did not affect colonization by wild-type MH. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Administration of florfenicol at time of arrival decreased the incidence of MH organisms in the nasopharynx and delayed the onset of RTD. Prophylactic use of suitable antibiotics is likely to reduce the incidence of acute RTD in calves for several days after arrival at feedyards, which is the period when they are most susceptible to infectious organisms.  相似文献

Two trials were conducted on steers implanted with zeranol (Ralgro) to determine the edible tissue residues and the secretion pattern in faeces, urine and bile of zeranol residues throughout and beyond the recommended withdrawal period (70 days) for this drug. In the first trial there was considerable variation in the zeranol residue concentration in all edible tissues, the highest concentrations found in the liver being significantly above the control values (P less than 0.05). In the other tissues, only fat sampled 14 days after implanting was significantly above the control value (P less than 0.05). The zeranol concentration in bile samples obtained at slaughter [70 days (18), 90 days (5) and 120 days (2)] were all higher than the apparent concentration in the bile of untreated steers. The mean concentration of zeranol in the faeces and urine varied from day to day and between animals sampled on the same day following implantation. The highest mean concentrations were observed during the first 40 days following implanting, declining steadily to approach the control values 70 days after implantation. The second trial using steers prepared with bile duct re-entrant cannulae resulted in a similar pattern of zeranol excretion in bile, faeces and urine. The highest concentrations of zeranol were observed in bile and ranged from 24 to 34 micrograms/l; there was considerable variation between animals and within animals sampled on successive days. Although the concentration declined steadily, zeranol was still readily detectable 120 days after implanting.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This study determined the influence of the estrogenic ear implant Synovex-S on feedlot performance, tissue deposition, and thyroid status of growing-finishing beef steers implanted either once or reimplanted. The pattern of implant absorption was also determined. Two 112-d feeding trials were used with 48 Hereford steers per trial. Each trial was a randomized block design with eight groups (lots) of six steers each assigned to four treatments (two lots/treatment). Treatments were 1) no implant or control, 2) implanted on d 0 and reimplanted at 60 d on trial, 3) implanted at 30 d on trial, and 4) implanted on d 0 only. These implant treatments resulted in withdrawal periods before slaughter of approximately 60, 90 and 120 d for Treatments 2, 3, and 4, respectively. All steers were given ad libitum access to water and a 60% concentrate diet. Group intakes were determined daily, BW weekly, estimated body composition every 28 d, plasma thyroid hormone concentrations at 112 d and at slaughter, and carcass measurements and liver tissue deiodinase at slaughter. Approximately 25% of the original implant dose remained in the ear 60 d after implanting and this residual amount was absorbed linearly at the rate of approximately .15% of the original dose per day. Implant treatments increased (P less than .05) DMI, BW gain, feed conversion, and empty body gains for water and protein. Carcass measurements suggested a nonsignificant trend (P greater than .10) for leaner carcasses for implanted steers. An immediate shift toward greater protein and less fat deposition occurred within 28 d after initial implanting (Treatment 3).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The purpose of this study was to determine and describe the effects of slaughter age (at constant weights) on pre- and post-weaning growth rate and carcass traits of unselected steer and heifer progeny from a crossbred beef herd. The data were obtained from 340 heifers and 377 steers weaned at 305 days of age and fed a high-energy post-weaning diet. Heifers and steers were slaughtered at individual unshrunk weights of 420 and 470 kg, respectively, and divided into slaughter age classes based on 25-day intervals. There were differences (P < 0.01) between slaughter age classes for all growth traits including 305-day (weaning) weight, post-weaning daily gain, days on feed, and weight/day. Mean 305-day weight of steers in the youngest slaughter age class (347.8 kg; 376–400 days of age) was 28% greater than the mean of steers in the oldest age class (272.2 kg;>501 days of age). The youngest steer class averaged 63% more for daily gain than the oldest steer class (1.462 vs. 0.894 kg); the corresponding value for heifers was 64%. Post-weaning time in the feedlot ranged from 84.7 days for the youngest steer to 215.6 for the oldest steer class. Calculations based on mean differences between age classes in 305-day weight, daily gain and days on feed indicated that variability in weaning weight and in daily gain were of similar importance in determining slaughter age. Marbling score was greater (P < 0.01) for older steer classes, but was not different in the heifer data. Fat thickness of the oldest steer class was 25% more than the youngest steer class (1.89 vs. 1.51 cm); the corresponding percent in heifers was 30%. With the exception of differences in untrimmed rib and chuck percents in steers (P < 0.05), and rib specific gravity in heifers (P < 0.05), carcass quantity traits were essentially unaffected by slaughter age class when marbling score and fat thickness were included as continuous independent variables. None of the organoleptic traits (tenderness, juiciness and flavour) were affected by slaughter age class.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate effects of vaccination of feedlot steers against bovine neosporosis on weight gain, feed intake and efficiency (feed intake per gain), and carcass characteristics. DESIGN: Longitudinal observational study. ANIMALS: 60 weaned Brangus steers seronegative for Neospora caninum. PROCEDURE: Steers were assigned to age-matched control and treatment groups. Steers in the treatment group received N. caninum vaccine on days 79 and 106, while control steers received 2 placebo injections. For each steer, serologic status for N. caninum was determined on days 0 (weaning), 51, 79, 106, 135, 163, 191, 219, and 247 by use of an ELISA; body weight was determined on the same days and at slaughter (day 259). Daily feed intake per steer was measured from days 79 to 259. RESULTS: Seroconversion occurred in 23 of 30 (76.7%) steers in the vaccinated group. Immediately after vaccination, average daily gain, average daily feed intake, and feed efficiency were significantly greater in the treatment group than in the control group, but these differences did not persist. No differences between groups were found in regard to live weight at slaughter, hot carcass weight, dressing percentage, or quality grade; however, steers in the vaccinated group had significantly lower yield grades than did control steers. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In feedlot steers, use of this vaccine against N. caninum was safe and did not affect overall feedlot performance or meat quality; effects on yield grade require further evaluation.  相似文献

Organic beef production from steers demands several decisions concerning grazing strategy, feeding level in the winter and aspects as slaughter weight and length of the finishing period. A model has been developed to optimise these strategies. The objective of this study was (1) to find optimal strategies for organic beef production from steers regarding grazing strategy, feeding level in winter, finishing and slaughter in organic beef production from steer concerning economic output per time unit using a multi-level hierarchic Markov process and (2) to analyse the stability of these results by sensitivity analysis. The results showed that in general the optimal strategy only changes slightly depending on the criterion (net returns per steer versus per time unit). An optimization per time unit in some cases favours a more intensive production based on high feeding level in winter and finishing of steers as well as earlier slaughtering compared to an optimization per steer. Finishing of steers seemed not to be an optimal strategy from an economic point of view and price changes in feed, beef and premiums did not favour finishing of steers. Beef prices as well as prices for ryegrass/white clover pasture and low feeding level seemed to be the most important factors that influence net return.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of using retention-pond water for dust abatement on performance of feedlot steers and carriage of Escherichia coli O157 and Salmonella spp. DESIGN: Matched cohort studies. ANIMALS: 2 groups of feedlot steers comprising 3,510 (pathogen carriage) and 3,737 (performance) animals housed in a large commercial feedlot in the Texas Panhandle. PROCEDURE: Steers were systematically allocated to treatment pens approximately 60 days after arrival (pathogen carriage) or at arrival (performance). For evaluation of pathogen carriage, feces and hide swab specimens were collected from 25 animals in each pen within 10 days of slaughter. Samples were submitted for bacterial culture for E. coli O157 and were tested with a polymerase chain reaction-based assay for Salmonella spp. For evaluation of performance, pen weights of animals were obtained at arrival and slaughter and feed delivered to each pen was recorded. The exposure of interest for both studies was application of retention-pond water through fixed high-pressure sprinklers. RESULTS: Carriage of E. coli O157 and Salmonella spp and animal performance were not adversely affected by exposure to retention-pond water. Prevalences of E. coli O157 in feces, on hides, and either in feces or on hides for those exposed to retention-pond water were 8.3%, 8.9%, and 15.4%, respectively; prevalences for those unexposed to retention-pond water were 11.4%, 15.4%, and 22.6%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that use of retention-pond water for dust abatement in feedlot pens does not adversely affect pathogen carriage or animal performance.  相似文献

Fecal samples were collected from 200 feeder-calves on farms in Tennessee, after assembly at a Tennessee auction market, and after transport to a Texas feedyard. A final fecal sample was collected from each calf after 30 days of feedyard confinement. The fecal samples were cultured for the presence of Salmonella spp. Salmonella isolates were serotyped and antimicrobial drug-resistance patterns determined. The number of calves fecal culture-positive for Salmonella spp increased from 0 on the Tennessee farms and auction market to 3/200 (1.5%) at entry into the Texas feedyard, and 16/200 (8%) after 30 days of feedyard confinement. Salmonella serotypes isolated and the number of isolates of each serotype were S reading (8), S cerro (4), S newbrunswick (3), S anatum (2), and S typhimurium (copenhagen; 2). All Salmonella isolates were resistant to 5 or more of 13 antimicrobial drugs tested. Salmonella reading isolates were resistant to 10 or 11 of 13 antimicrobial drugs. The results indicated that the calves could have been infected with Salmonella spp prior to or during the course of the study, and that marketing stress as they moved from farm through feedyard may have induced fecal excretion of salmonellae. In addition, the pattern of antimicrobial drug resistance in the Salmonella isolates was broad.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To measure the reduction in fecal nematode egg counts and productivity impact of treatment of yearling steers with doramectin at entry into the feedlot, compared with control steers treated only with fenthion. ANIMALS: 6,096 crossbred yearling steers with a mean (+/- SD) body weight of 377.0 (+/- 37) kg. PROCEDURE: Steers were implanted with zeranol and alternately separated to fill each of 24 pens. Groups of steers within 12 matched pairs of pens were randomly allocated to treatment with doramectin or no treatment with doramectin for internal nematodes. Fecal samples were collected from approximately every twentieth steer from each pen at day 0 and at reimplant (approx day 60). Each steer was weighed on day 0 and at reimplant and then mean body weights of steers per pen were determined at 120 to 140 days after trial initiation. RESULTS: Treatment steers had a significantly lower fecal egg count at reimplant than control steers. Treatment steers had a significantly greater mean daily gain during the study, significantly greater feed consumption, significantly lower feed-to-gain ratio, and significantly better quality carcass grades at slaughter. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Under the conditions of our trial, there was a significant fecal egg count reduction response to doramectin treatment, which resulted in significantly improved productivity. Results of economic analysis of return on investment indicated that even with low egg counts in heavy body weight cattle, nematode egg count reduction with doramectin significantly improved returns.  相似文献

Five groups of 20 weaned beef calves were injected subcutaneously with either an ivermectin, a doramectin, an abamectin long-acting formulation, an ivermectin long-acting formulation or a saline control, at turnout and 60 and 120 days later. The animals grazed the same pasture and were sampled and weighed at turnout and 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 days later. At turnout the mean bodyweights of all the groups were similar and faecal culture showed that they had a mixed strongyle infection of Cooperia, Haemonchus, Ostertagia, Oesophagostomum and Trichostrongylus species. After 180 days, the mean bodyweight gains of each group were respectively 62.1 kg, 102.2 kg, 106.4 kg, 107.3 kg and 110.1 kg for the control, ivermectin, doramectin, ivermectin long-acting and abamectin long-acting groups. All the products significantly improved the weight gains of the cattle, and significantly reduced their faecal egg counts.  相似文献

Postmortem proteolysis is an important determinant of beef tenderness. Caspase 3 is a protease that functions in apoptosis and has been shown to degrade myofibrillar proteins. Our objective was to evaluate whether caspase 3 activity is related to beef tenderness and muscle growth, and whether caspase 3 is activated in postmortem beef muscle. In experiment 1, longissimus thoracis (LT) and sternomandibularis muscle samples were obtained at 0, 0.25, 1, 3, 24, 72, and 240 h postmortem from 5 steers. In experiment 2, a group of 40 beef cattle was slaughtered at the University of Wyoming Meat Lab with 10 steers of different tenderness and growth characteristics chosen for the analysis of caspase 3 activity in the LT. In experiment 3, 10 steers with different tenderness but matched growth characteristics were chosen for analyses. In experiment 1, no significant activation (P = 0.70) of caspase 3 activity was detected; only a decreased activity at 72 (P = 0.05) and 240 h (P = 0.02) postmortem was observed. Western blot analysis of both muscle samples showed only the pro-caspase 3 form and failed to detect the activated enzyme. In experiment 2, caspase 3 activity in the LT immediately postmortem was greater (P = 0.05) for the cattle with increased Warner-Bratzler shear force values. No difference in caspase 3 activity was detected for experiment 3. Our results demonstrate that caspase 3 activity is not activated, with its activity decreasing with time postmortem, and caspase 3 activity is not associated with Warner-Bratzler shear force at slaughter. Therefore, caspase 3 is not anticipated to be involved in postmortem tenderization of beef.  相似文献

This study examined the influence of bovine growth hormone (bGH) on liver and kidney thyroxine-5'-monodeiodinase activity (TMA) in growing beef cattle. In a preliminary trial (trial 1), tissue samples were obtained at slaughter from two placebo-injected and two bGH-injected (29.2 IU/day for 14 days before slaughter) Hereford heifers (398 kg avg slaughter wt), with one heifer on each treatment fed at either 1.0 or 2.0 times maintenance energy requirement. In a second trial, tissue and plasma samples were obtained from six placebo-injected and six bGH-injected (29.2 IU/day for 19 days) Hereford steers (331 kg avg slaughter wt) fed at 1.8 times maintenance energy requirement. In a third trial, liver tissue and plasma samples were obtained from 14 Angus X Hereford steers (270 kg avg wt) fed either an 8% protein, 1.96 Mcal-metabolizable energy/kg diet (8 steers) or a 14% protein, 2.67 Mcal-metabolizable energy/kg diet (6 steers) in association with acute administration of bGH. Half the steers in each group were given two injections per steer of either placebo or 37.8 IU bGH at 24-hr intervals and slaughtered 24 hr after the second injection. Units of tissue TMA in all trials were measured at slaughter; one unit defined as 1 ng T3 generated/hr/mg protein during incubation with T4 (1.3 fM). In trial 1, TMA in liver and kidney was 2.86 and 1.21 times greater, respectively, for bGH than for placebo treatments. In trial 2, units of TMA in liver homogenates were higher (P less than .05) for bGH (4.14) than for placebo (2.83) treatments and higher (P less than .02) in liver microsomal preparations for bGH (32.7) than for placebo (27.3) treatments. Units of TMA in kidney homogenates were also higher (P less than .10) for bGH (1.48) than for placebo (.87) treatments and higher (P less than .02) in kidney microsomal preparations for bGH (23.0) than for placebo (16.4) treatments. Following acute injection of bGH (trial 3), units of TMA in liver homogenates were higher (P less than .01) for bGH (2.5) than for placebo (1.8) treatments. Plasma T4 (70.0 vs 73.5 ng/ml) and T3 (1.08 vs 1.18 ng/ml) concentrations appeared slightly higher in bGH-treated steers (trial 2) and increased by 20 and .5 ng/ml, respectively, (P less than .01) within 6 to 12 h after acute injection of bGH (trial 3). Concurrently, plasma TSH concentration increased following acute GH injection (trial 3).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of diet on growth of steers weaned at approximately 100 vs 205 d of age. In Exp. 1, a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial experiment was conducted using 78 Angus crossbred cow-calf pairs. The factors examined were age at weaning (early, at 103+/-3 d [EW] vs normal, at 203+/-3 d [NW]), feeding strategy (ad libitum vs postweaning programmed intake), and dietary CP concentration (100 vs 120% of NRC [1984] recommended levels). Early-weaned calves had a greater (P < .001) ADG than NW calves from 103 to 203 d and reached market weight at 385 d vs 418 d for NW calves (P < .001). Likewise, steers offered feed for ad libitum consumption reached market weight at 394 d, compared with 409 d for programmed-intake steers (P < .05). In Exp. 2, 64 Angus crossbred steers were either weaned at 93+/-3 d and fed one of four diets, weaned at 210+/-3 d without access to creep feed, or weaned at 210+/-3 d with access to creep feed for 60 d prior to weaning. Early-weaned calves were heavier (P < .01) than NW calves at 210 d if fed either 100 or 90% concentrate diets, and they had greater (P < .001) backfat thickness at 210 d but no difference (P > .10) in longissimus muscle area compared to EW calves fed a 60% concentrate diet. At slaughter, 80 to 100% of steers on all treatments graded low Choice or higher. Feeding high-concentrate diets to EW beef calves accelerated growth rate and fat deposition early in the feeding period and may be a way to provide young cattle for a high-quality beef market.  相似文献

Toxocara vitulorum, a parasite of the small intestine of cattle and water buffaloes, is mainly acquired by calves via the colostrum/milk from infected cows. To understand the development of immune responses in calves, antibody levels to a soluble extract antigen (Ex) from T. vitulorum infective larvae were measured by an indirect ELISA with sera of 15 buffalo calves, which were sampled every 15 days for the first 180 days after birth and 9 buffalo cows during the perinatal period. From all serum samples examined during the first 180 days, antibody level was lowest and highest in calves at 1 day of age before and after suckling colostrum, respectively, suggesting that the origin of antibodies was the colostrum. Immediately after birth, antibody levels in suckled calves remained at high levels until day 15, began to decrease to lower levels between 15 and 30 days and remained relatively stable until 120 days. By comparing the immune responses of these animals with their parasitological status it was considered possible to determine if passively acquired or actively produced antibodies provided protection against the infection. High numbers of T. vitulorum eggs in the feces between 30 and 60 days indicated that passively acquired antibodies did not provide protection against the infection, at least during these first days, and the maximum fecal egg counts during 30-45 days were coincident with decreased antibody levels. Between 60 and 120 days, when serum antibodies were detected at reduced, but stable levels, adult nematodes were expelled from the intestines and no more T. vitulorum eggs were found, suggesting development of acquired resistance. However, the potential and functional protective role of the antibodies against T. vitulorum infection and the process of self-cure requires further investigation.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine healthy slaughter-age cattle and sheep on-farm for the excretion of Salmonella serovars in faeces and to identify possible risk factors using a questionnaire. PROCEDURE: The study involved 215 herds and flocks in the four eastern states of Australia, 56 with prior history of salmonellosis. Production systems examined included pasture beef cattle, feedlot beef cattle, dairy cattle, prime lambs and mutton sheep and animals were all at slaughter age. From each herd or flock, 25 animals were sampled and the samples pooled for Salmonella culture. All Salmonella isolated were serotyped and any Salmonella Typhimurium isolates were phage typed. Questionnaires on each production system, prepared in Epi Info 6.04, were designed to identify risk factors associated with Salmonella spp excretion, with separate questionnaires designed for each production system. RESULTS: Salmonellae were identified in all production systems and were more commonly isolated from dairies and beef feedlots than other systems. Statistical analysis revealed that dairy cattle were significantly more likely to shed Salmonella in faeces than pasture beef cattle, mutton sheep and prime lambs (P<0.05). A wide diversity of Salmonella serovars, all of which have been isolated from humans in Australia, was identified in both cattle and sheep. Analysis of the questionnaires showed access to new arrivals was a significant risk factor for Salmonella excretion on dairy properties. For beef feedlots, the presence of large numbers of flies in the feedlot pens or around stored manure were significant risk factors for Salmonella excretion. CONCLUSION: Dairy cattle pose the highest risk of all the slaughter-age animals tested. Some of the identified risk factors can be overcome by improved management practices, especially in relation to hygiene.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the biocontainment, biosecurity, and security practices at beef feedyards in the Central Plains of the United States. DESIGN: Survey. SAMPLE POPULATION: Managers of feedyards in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas that feed beef cattle for finish before slaughter; feedyards had to have an active concentrated animal feeding operation permit with a 1-time capacity of >or= 1,000 cattle. PROCEDURES: A voluntary survey of feedyard personnel was conducted. Identified feedyard personnel were interviewed and responses regarding facility design, security, employees, disease preparedness, feedstuffs, hospital or treatment systems, sanitation, cattle sources, handling of sick cattle, and disposal of carcasses were collected in a database questionnaire. RESULTS: The survey was conducted for 106 feedyards with a 1-time capacity that ranged from 1,300 to 125,000 cattle. Feedyards in general did not have high implementation of biocontainment, biosecurity, or security practices. Smaller feedyards were, in general, less likely to use good practices than were larger feedyards. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results of the survey provided standard practices for biocontainment, biosecurity, and security in feedyards located in Central Plains states. Information gained from the survey results can be used by consulting veterinarians and feedyard managers as a basis for discussion and to target training efforts.  相似文献

Yearling steers (n = 2,552; 314 kg of initial BW) were used to evaluate the effects of ractopamine-HCl (RAC) and days on feed on performance, carcass characteristics, and skeletal muscle gene expression in finishing steers. Treatment groups included serial slaughter dates of 150, 171, or 192 d on feed. Within each slaughter date, steers either received RAC (200 mg/steer) daily for the final 28 d or were not fed RAC. All steers were initially implanted with Revalor-IS and were reimplanted with Revalor-S after 75 d on feed. At slaughter, muscle samples from the semimembranosus were collected for mRNA analysis of the beta-adrenergic receptors (beta-AR). Ractopamine administration increased (P < 0.05) ADG, G:F, and HCW and increased (P = 0.08) LM area. Ractopamine did not affect the dressing percentage, USDA yield grade, or quality grade (P > 0.3). There was no change in overall feed intake across the entire feeding period; however, feed intake was increased during the 28-d period during which the steers were fed RAC (P < or = 0.05). Greater days on feed decreased (P < 0.05) ADG, G:F, DMI, and the number of yield grade 1 and 2 carcasses. Also, greater days on feed increased (P < 0.05) HCW, dressing percentage, and the number of prime and choice carcasses, as well as the number of yield grade 4 and 5 carcasses. Increasing days on feed decreased (P < 0.05) the abundance of beta(1)-AR and beta(3)-AR mRNA and increased (P < 0.05) the abundance of beta(2)-AR mRNA in skeletal muscle samples obtained at slaughter. Ractopamine had no effect (P > 0.10) on the abundance of beta(1)-AR or beta(3)-AR mRNA, but tended (P = 0.09) to increase beta(2)-AR mRNA. Additional time-course studies with primary muscle cell cultures revealed that advancing time in culture increased (P < 0.001) beta(2)-AR mRNA but had no effect (P > 0.10) on beta(1)-AR or beta(3)-AR mRNA. We conclude that days on feed and RAC are affecting beta-AR mRNA levels, which could, in turn, impact the biological response to RAC feeding in yearling steers.  相似文献
