Hematologic and serum chemistry values are reported for 105 brown boobies (Sula leucogaster) from Johnston Atoll, Central Pacific. Hematocrit, estimated total plasma solids, total and differential white cell counts, serum glucose, calcium, phosphorus, uric acid, total protein, albumin, globulin, aspartate aminotransferase, and creatinine phosphokinase were analyzed. Hematologic and serum chemistry values varied with age and sex. Values were compared with those of red-footed boobies and other tropical and temperate marine pelecaniforms.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Several factors may influence the concentration of serum globulins in healthy cows and thereby affect clinical interpretation; however, few studies have addressed sources of variation in globulin values. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare colorimetry-based total serum globulin values with electrophoretically-determined serum globulin fractions and with IgG concentration, and to evaluate diurnal and long-term physiological variation and the effects of lactation and venipuncture site on serum globulin concentrations in Holstein dairy cattle. METHODS: Serum total globulin and albumin concentrations were analyzed by colorimetry and electrophoresis in 86 lactating cows; IgG concentrations were determined by radial immunodiffusion in 41 dry and 34 lactating cows. Serum globulins were analyzed hourly for 24 hours in 8 lactating cows and weekly for 15 weeks in 6 additional cows. Globulin concentrations were compared in samples obtained from jugular and coccygeal venipuncture sites in 4 cows. Results were analyzed using parametric statistical tests. RESULTS: Colorimetry-based total serum globulin concentrations correlated well with gamma-globulin fractions (r2 = 0.87) and IgG concentrations (r2 = 0.91). Diurnal variation of total serum globulins concentration was significant (P =.01); however, globulins did not vary significantly over a 15-week period. Mean serum globulins concentration in samples obtained from the jugular vein was 2.35 g/L higher than that in samples obtained by coccygeal venipuncture (P <.0001). CONCLUSIONS: The colorimetric method used widely in routine laboratory analyses remains a useful test for globulins determination in dairy cattle. However, time of sampling and venipuncture site should be considered in the interpretation of serum globulins on serial or interindividual specimens.  相似文献

A study was made of blood cellular components, serum proteins and serum enzymes in 48 pigs naturally infected with Cysticercus tenuicollis. Twenty-five healthy pigs were studied for comparison. Affected animals showed a reduction in total erythrocyte count, packed cell volume and haemoglobin content and an increase in mean corpuscular volume and total leucocyte count. Significantly higher activities of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and isocitric dehydrogenase serum enzymes were recorded in all affected pigs. Total protein, albumin and globulin values of affected pigs remained unchanged when compared with healthy controls.  相似文献

Total protein, albumin, globulin and NPN of serum were determined, at approximately 4‐week intervals, in the growing phase and the first reproductive cycle of the goose. Levels of serum albumin and globulin, and therefore total protein, increased with age from 1–20 weeks. Non‐protein nitrogen declined through this period. In the adult phase, males had fairly constant values of serum albumin and globulin while females showed significant increases in these serum constituents. These increases were associated with egg production. Sex differences in non‐protein nitrogen did not occur in adult geese.  相似文献

Fourteen calves were used to investigate the changes from birth to 83 days of age in the concentrations of serum albumin, alkaline phosphatase, beta-hydroxybutyrate, plasma cortisol, serum creatine kinase, creatinine, iron, plasma fibrinogen, serum gamma-glutamyl transferase, plasma glucose, haptoglobin, serum non-esterified fatty acids, total protein, transferrin, triglycerides, urea and gamma globulin; the haematological variables measured were: basophils, eosinophils, haematocrit, haemoglobin, lymphocytes, mean cell haemoglobin, mean cell haemoglobin concentration, mean cell volume, monocytes, band neutrophils, neutrophils, platelets, red blood cells and white blood cells. The changes are presented as a series of graphs and the values are discussed in relation to the published reference ranges for adult cattle. Two populations of calves were identified which gave rise to a bimodal distribution for some of the variables. Differences in haematocrit, haemoglobin and red blood cell counts were apparent at birth, with raised values for these measurements being associated with an increased white blood cell and neutrophil count between three and 27 days of age.  相似文献

Complete medical examinations were performed on 20 wild Decken's sifaka (Propithecus verreauxi deckeni) and 20 wild red-fronted brown lemurs (Eulemurfulvus rufus) from western Madagascar. Each animal received a complete physical examination, and weight, body temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate were recorded and ectoparasites collected. Blood samples were collected for complete blood cell count, differential white blood cell count, hemoparasite examination, serum biochemical profile, fat-soluble vitamin analysis, trace mineral analysis, and toxoplasmosis and viral serology. Fecal samples were collected for bacterial culture and endoparasite examination. Significant differences exist between the species for serum chemistry values for creatine phosphokinase, glucose, total protein, albumin, globulin, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, phosphorus, potassium, and chloride; for fat-soluble vitamins 25-hydroxycholecalciferol, retinol, retinyl palmitate, gamma-tocopherol, alpha-tocopherol, and lutein + zeaxanthin; and serum copper. Parasites detected include Lemurostrongylus spp., Lemuricola spp., Trichurus spp., and ectoparasites Haemaphysalis lemuris, Psoroptes, and mites identified to the family Laelapidae. Enteric bacterial flora included Escherichia coli, Citrobacter ssp., Enterococcus faecalis, Bacillus cereus, Klebsiella ozaenae, Acinetobacter lwofii, and Enterobacter amnigenus.  相似文献

Most reported laboratory reference values for harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) are derived from captive seals, or stranded seals that have recovered from disease in marine mammal centers. This study established hematology and serum chemistry reference values for free-ranging harbor seals, using methods and that are current and readily available, and determined the effects of hemolysis on serum chemistry values of captive harbor seals. Blood samples were collected for hematologic and serum chemistry measurements from 14 clinically normal, adult male and female harbor seals and two juvenile harbor seals (approximate age 6 mo) captured in saltwater sloughs and estuaries near Moss Landing, California, USA. Values for amylase, globulin, and differential leukocyte count, not previously reported, were determined. In general, hematology and chemistry values in adults were similar to those reported for free-ranging and captive harbor seals, except for glucose, urea nitrogen, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) values, which were higher than those reported previously. Red blood cell counts in the two juveniles were higher than in adults and in young harbor seals studied previously. To determine the effects of hemolysis on serum chemistry values, two intensities of hemolysis were generated experimentally in blood collected from 11 harbor seals recovering from injuries or stranding at the Marine Mammal Center (Sausalito, California 94965, USA). Moderate hemolysis (++, 1 g/L hemoglobin, red-tinged) significantly increased LDH activity, whereas severe hemolysis ( , 2 g/L hemoglobin, cherry red) significantly increased total protein, albumin, calculated globulin, LDH, and total bilirubin and significantly decreased creatinine. The effects of hemolysis must be considered when chemistry results of harbor seals are interpreted.  相似文献

This study was carried out to determine the level of certain biochemical variables reflecting the energy metabolic statuses during the first week of lactation in goats. A total of 120 Anglo-Nubian, Angora, Baladi, and Damascus does (30 does per breed) were used throughout 5 consecutive parities (30 does per parity) to investigate the effect of breed, parity, day of lactation, and their interaction on serum metabolites including total protein, albumin, globulin, glucose, total lipids, cholesterol, and transaminases. Blood samples were collected every other day during the first week of lactation. Baladi does had the greatest (P < 0.001) values in all measured biochemical variables followed by Anglo-Nubian [in total protein, globulin, and aminotransferase (AST)] and Damascus (in globulin and AST) and then Angora, which had the lowest (P < 0.001) values for all variables. Fifth parity exhibited the greatest (P < 0.001) values in all serum metabolites compared with other parities except for alanine transaminase (ALT) enzyme activity in which the greatest (P = 0.046) values were observed in the first and fourth parties. Serum concentrations of the measured variables increased gradually throughout the first day after kidding until the seventh day for total protein (P < 0.001), albumin (P = 0.013), globulin (P = 0.017), and cholesterol (P = 0.028) whereas serum glucose concentration exhibited an opposite trend. Serum concentrations of total lipids and enzyme activities of AST and ALT were not affected by day (P > 0.05) after kidding. Baladi goats had the least (P < 0.001) serum insulin concentration, which was associated (P < 0.001) with greatest serum glucose concentration. Serum triiodothyronine (T(3)) was inversely correlated (P = 0.032) with milk yield whereas greatest (P = 0.003) T(3) concentrations were associated with least (P < 0.001) milk yield recorded in Angora goats. Animal physiological responses and their indices were not affected (P > 0.05) by breed whereas both rectal temperature and coefficient of heat tolerance were affected (P < 0.001) by parity in an opposite direction. Baladi goats expressed an aspect of adaptability where their rectal temperature decreased and coefficient of heat tolerance increased with increasing parity number.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to demonstrate the effects of zinc sulphate administration (2 g/week p.o., 2% solution) on zinc, copper, iron, calcium and magnesium levels in blood serum of 20 pregnant Ivesi sheep during the last 2 month of pregnancy, immediately post partum as well as in their newborn lambs. In these 20 lambs, also total serum protein, gamma globulin and birth weight were determined. The control group consisted of 15 pregnant sheep and their 15 lambs housed under the same conditions. Zinc sulphate administered to sheep caused significant increases in their serum levels of zinc as well as in those of their lambs. The lambs of the zinc supplemented group had also slightly higher birth weights (not significant) and significant higher gamma globulin levels, whereas the total protein values was almost identical in both groups.  相似文献

The prevalence of Streptococcus equi serovar equi (S.equi) in nasal discharge and pus samples from sub‐mandibular lymph nodes in mules at the Remount Depot, Sargodha was examined and total serum proteins, serum albumin, serum globulin and fibrinogen measured. A total of 250 nasal swabs and pus samples were collected from mules and examined microbiologically: 99 (39.6%) were positive for S. equi. A higher occurrence of S. equi was recorded in foals as compared to adults. The concentrations of total serum protein, serum globulin and fibrinogen were significantly increased (P<0.05), while the concentration of serum albumin significantly decreased (P<0.05) in strangles‐affected mules. It was concluded that increased total serum proteins, serum globulin and fibrinogen along with decreased serum albumin were important indicators of infection by S. equi in mules.  相似文献

Normal reference values for serum proteins of foals from birth to 1 year of age have been established. Chemical and electrophoretic/refractometric methods for total protein, albumin, total globulin and Albumin/Globulin (A/G ratio) have also been compared. The biuret total protein method and Bromcresol Green (BCG) method on the Technicon SMA 12/60 autoanalyzer were used and compared with total protein determined via refractometry and albumin determined by Cellulose Acetate (CA) electrophoresis/densitometry. Globulin and A/G ratios were calculated from the chemical method data and compared with that obtained electrophoretically. Total protein, albumin, total globulins and A/G ratios all were in agreement at all sample times studied. Data on the subfractionation of serum globulins via CA electrophoresis is also presented. Wide variations in alpha and beta globulin levels were noted among the foal sera early in life. As a result, two distinct populations of foals with respect to both globulin content and A/G ratio were identified. One of these populations (Group A) appeared to have obtained passive immunity more slowly than the other (Group B) animals. Comparison of these data with clinical cases of foals in which failure of passive transfer was a part suggests that the A/G ratio may be useful in assessing adequate colostral antibody levels in the newborn foal.  相似文献

The concentrations of total protein (TP), albumin and globulin in the blood serum were investigated in seven trials with 203 piglets weaned at the age of three to four weeks. The lowest values were recorded in the newborn piglets just before colostrum intake. Two days later the TP level was three times higher and that of globulin almost five times higher. Later the levels began to sink (more intensively in globulin) and the decrease lasted until the end of the second month of age. Albuminaemia increased from birth until the end of study (the beginning of the third month) without any greater influence of colostrum intake and at a rate reduced by weaning. The albumin-globulin quotient, the lowest on the second day of life, increased step by step. The better-growing piglets mostly had higher albuminaemia and their hypoglobulinaemia reached a normal level sooner after weaning as compared with the tail-enders. This suggests that nutrition, body growth and albumin and globulin synthesis are interdependent in piglets. An increase in serum corticosteroids induced by two days of starvation or two administrations of adrenocorticotropic hormone, caused an insignificant increase in the concentration of albumin. Two hours after ACTH administration, the high level of corticosteroids was not observed to be accompanied by a change in serum proteins.  相似文献

Hematological values of peripheral blood were determined for bovine fetuses and calves of various ages. Erythrocyte values increased through gestation. Fetuses 100 days or older had total values within the ranges of those reported for normal adult cattle. Mature erythrocytes were not observed in embryos and only a few were observed in fetuses 40 days of age. Fetuses 250 days or older had only a few rubricytes (<10/100 WBC). Leukocytes were first identified in the peripheral blood of a 45-day old fetus. Absolute leukocyte values increased through gestation and reached maximum values shortly before parturition. Granulocytes were first observed at 130 days of gestation and reached maximum values near parturition.

Total serum protein and gamma-globulin concentrations of colostrum-deprived calves were similar to serum protein and gammaglobulin concentrations of fetuses older than 265 days and were lower than values for the colostrum-fed calves. The immunoelectrophoretic pattern of 59-day old fetuses, the earliest age at which serum samples were obtained, demonstrated albumin, an α1 globulin and a β globulin, possibly transferrin. Additional α and β globulins appeared in the older fetuses and by 175 days of gestation serum electophoretic patterns of the fetuses were similar to patterns normally found with adult bovine serum except for the absence of the gammaglobulins in fetal serum. Immunoglobulin M was detected in 39 of 95 fetal serum samples by radial diffusion and in 13 of 95 samples by immunoelectrophoresis. Immunoglobulin G was detected in ten of 95 fetal serum samples by radial diffusion and in six of 95 samples by immunoelectrophoresis.

Single blood samples from 8 clinically normal adult Indian runner ducks (Anas platyrhynchos), 8 clinically normal American flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber), and 3 blood samples from each of 4 clinically normal hyacinth macaws (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) were collected to compare the biochemical values of paired plasma samples from heparinized blood with those of serum samples from clotted blood. Small but significant differences (P < 0.05) were found between paired serum and plasma samples for some biochemistries. In flamingos, potassium (P = 0.001), albumin (P = 0.03), and alanine aminotransferase (P = 0.02) were significantly higher in serum compared with plasma, whereas total protein (P = 0.04) and globulin (P = 0.01) were significantly lower in serum compared with plasma. In Indian runner ducks, potassium (P = 0.0002), chloride (P = 0.02), and alanine aminotransferase (P = 0.0005) were significantly higher in serum compared with plasma, whereas total CO2 (P = 0.02) and globulin (P = 0.007) were significantly lower in serum compared with plasma. Serum total protein was lower than plasma levels, but it was not significant (P = 0.05). In hyacinth macaws, total protein (P = 0.02) and the albumin:globulin ratio (P = 0.02) were significantly lower in serum compared with plasma. Although statistically significant, these differences were small and appear unlikely to be of any clinical relevance. There is minimal loss of plasma volume from heparinized blood samples compared with serum volume from clotted blood samples. This allows collection of smaller blood volumes from small or sick birds in a single lithium heparin anticoagulant tube to perform a hemogram on whole blood and a biochemical profile on the separated plasma that provides values similar to those of serum.  相似文献

Serum gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels in blood samples taken from normal lambs which had suckled colostrum were found to be up to 140 times normal adult levels. These high serum levels declined rapidly reaching a stable level approximately 60% higher than normal adult values by 24 days of age. Newborn lambs which had not yet consumed colostrum had GGT levels which would be considered normal in adult sheep. The GGT concentration in ewes' colostrum was up to 470 times normal serum levels. There was a significant positive correlation between serum GGT and gamma globulin levels in blood samples taken from lambs within 24 hours of birth. Lambs' serum alkaline phosphatase (AP) and serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT) levels also rose concurrently with the absorption of colostral gamma globulin, with the day 1 AP values being significantly correlated with the serum gamma globulin levels. Serum AP levels declined gradually but were still well above normal adult levels at 45 days of age while SGOT levels returned to normal adult levels by two to three days after birth. It is concluded therefore that, as previously shown in calves, lambs acquire high levels of serum GGT activity from their mothers' colostrum in proportion to the amount of gamma globulin absorbed and also show a concurrent rise in serum AP activity. However the rise in SGOT levels at this time has not been observed in calves.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different physiological phases on serum total proteins and their fractions of ten Comisana ewes housed in Mediterranean area. From each animal, blood samples were collected at different physiological phases: late pregnancy, post-partum, early, mid-, end lactation and dry period. On all samples serum total proteins were determined by the biuret method, and albumin, α-globulins, β(1) -globulins, β(2) -globulins and γ-globulins concentrations were assessed using an automated system. One-way repeated measures analysis of variance was applied to determine the significant effect of different physiological phases on the parameters studied. During the late pregnancy and post-partum, total proteins, β1- and β2-globulins and γ-globulins showed the highest values. Starting from post-partum, α-globulins increased to reach their peaks in mid-lactation. Early lactation was characterized by low γ-globulins values. The increase in serum albumin concentration and the drop in some globulin fractions determined the significant increase in albumin/globulin ratio. The obtained results contributed to improve the knowledge on electrophoretic profile during the different physiological phases in ewes, confirming that pregnancy and lactation periods affect the protein metabolism. Particularly, serum protein fractions pattern could give information about dehydration, plasma volume expansion and hepatic function, which occur during the different physiological phases. Dynamics of the protein profile - from pregnancy to dry period - which are provided by our results, could be considered as guidelines for the management strategies to guarantee the nutritional needs of these animals during the different physiological phases and to avoid a decline of productive performance and consequently an economic loss.  相似文献

Splenectomy was performed on five rams since four years to study the long-term effect of the operation on blood profile and serum total proteins and paper electrophoresis.A reduction in the blood profile was accompanied with a decrease in the betta, gamma globulin and total globulin following removal of the spleen. Alpha globulin showed a slight rise. The albumin/globulin ratio was highly increased.  相似文献

Haematological and blood serum chemical changes were studied in two groups of specific pathogen free chickens infected at five weeks old with different field isolates of infectious bursal disease virus. Blood and serum components were determined five days after infection. There were significant decreases (P less than 0.05) in the total erythrocyte count, packed cell volume, haemoglobin concentration, albumin, albumin: globulin ratio, uric acid and glucose. Serum components which increased significantly (P less than 0.05) were globulins and cholesterol.  相似文献
