The relationships between bending properties, compressive strength, tracheid length, microfibril angle, and ring characteristics of 20-year-old Taiwania (Taiwania cryptomerioides Hay.) trees were examined. The trees came from different thinning and pruning treatments, but the practices showed no significant effect on the investigated properties. The results showed that based on comparison with the literature, plantation-grown immature Taiwania have noticeably lower average strength properties than mature trees of the same species. Wood density and bending and compressive strengths were not related to either tracheid length or microfibril angle in young Taiwania. There were positive relationships between bending strength and compressive strength. The wood density, ring width, earlywood width, earlywood density, and latewood percentage were the most important predictors of strength by simple linear regressions. The wood density and ring width/earlywood width may be considered as indicators for assessing the bending strength, while wood density and latewood percentage were the best predictors of compressive strength by multiple linear regressions.  相似文献

Douglas-fir trees about 21 years old and growing on a poor site were thinned and fertilized causing accelerated growth. The characteristics of the wood across the 30-year age span were studied for 7 trees from the treated plot. Four trees of nearly uniform ring growth were also studied for some characteristics. Radial and tangential tracheid diameters, tracheid length and percent latewood were correlated quite well with log of age, coefficients ranged from 0.76 to 0.88 on pooled data. All tracheid dimensions when correlated with log of age gave high coefficients on a within-tree basis. The strongest relationship in all age-related factors was between 0 and 12 to 14 years. Specific gravity increased with age in all trees to about 16 to 18 years, then leveled off.Fertilization and thinning caused immediate production of lower density wood with somewhat lower percent latewood, a slight decrease in tracheid diameter tangentially but slightly greater radially, and a small decrease in tracheid length. The effects were mainly in the first 3 to 4 years after treatment, then there was recovery to normal wood density and cell dimensions. Wood from the trees of uniform growth showed no significant change over the same time period in percent latewood, specific gravity, and tracheid length.The research was financed by funds from State of Washington Initiative 171, Institute of Forest Products and the College of Forest Resources, University of Washington, Seattle.  相似文献

Selected wood and cell characteristics were examined in incrementcores from two 46-year-old pines that had been fertilized withammonium sulphate 37, 38 and 39 years after planting. Fertilizationincreased the ring-width and greatly reduced the latewood percentand the bulk density of both early and late wood; the effectswere greatest shortly after the last application of fertilizer,but remained apparent for at least five further years. Thoughboth trees produced more early wood cells only one of the twoproduced more latewood. The average tracheid diameter was not changed, though its rangewithin the annual ring was increased. There were decreases intracheid wall-thickness and length, and in wall volume per tracheid.These changes were greatest in latewood, so that the differencebetween early and latewood was reduced, while the characteristicsof the earlywood were exaggerated. Resin canal radial (but nottangential) diameter and cross-sectional area increased, thoughnumber of canals per unit area of ring was unchanged. Correlations with temperature, insolation and rainfall in March-Juneand July-October suggest that (1) wood properties are influencedby the weather of both the current and the previous growingseasons; (2) the climatic optima for the fertilized and unfertilizedtrees are different and consequently (3) the weather influencesthe effect of fertilization on wood properties.  相似文献

Summary The variation of six wood properties was studied within and between eighteen trees of Pinus kesiya Royle ex Gordon (syn. P. khasya Royle; P. insularis Endlicher) grown in Zambia from seed of Burma provenance and exhibiting 16 annual rings at 5 ft. above ground. Three trees represented each of two size classes in each of three thinning treatments. Thinning effects were poorly estimated but heavy thinning increased ring width, decreased latewood percentage and caused marginal decreases in tracheid length and density. The two tree classes differed in ring width characteristics. Individual trees varied particularly in density; significant height effects were detected for tracheid length and density. Latewood width (mean 0.9 mm) and grain angle (-1.2°) varied little but total ring width (5.8 mm), latewood percentage (19.6%), tracheid length (4.6 mm) and density (0.46 g/cm3) exhibited systematic patterns of variation within trees; quadratic polynomials including ring number and height as independent variables explained 80 to 90% of the variation. Radial differences were often statistically significant but practically unimportant. For plantation surveys many trees should be sampled by 3–4 annual rings on two radii at breast height.Wood samples were supplied by the Zambian Forest Research Division. Summary Geographical location (north/south latitude), social position of trees in a forst stand (dominant, codominant, suppressed) and site quality were investigated as to their effect on tracheid length, proportion of latewood and wood density of black pine indigenous to Greece. Tracheid length was fund greater in the northern location, in dominant trees and at intermediate site qualities. Proportion of latewood was higher in the southern location, in suppressed trees and at intermediate site qualities. Density was higher in the southern location, in codominant trees and at good or intermediate site qualities. Statistically, however, many differences at P = 95 % and all differences at P = 99% are not significant.The present study is based on the sampling of 331 trees, 55 years old and older; the probes were taken only from the 10 outer rings, at breast height. Summary The variation of six wood properties was studied within and between six trees ofPinus kesiya Royle ex Gordon (syn.P. khasya Royle;P. insularis Endlicher) grown in Zambia from seed of Assam provenance and exhibiting 24 annual rings at 5 ft. above ground. There were no important variations in latewood width (mean 0.8 mm) or grain angle (-1.7°). Total ring width (5.2 mm), latewood percentage (19.5%), tracheid length (4.8 mm) and density (0.50 g/cm3) exhibited systematic patterns of variation within trees that could be related to ring number and height by quadratic polynomials, which explained 70 to 90% of the variation. The most important source of random variation was the difference between individual trees and it is recommended that for plantation surveys many trees should be sampled by 3 to 4 annual rings on two radii at breast height.The wood samples were kindly supplied by the Zambia Forest Research Division. Summary Intra-increment variation in specific gravity of wood is studied in relation to the types of annual increments in Pinus wallichiana. In the normal annual increments specific gravity increases almost linearly across the ring, displaying minimum value in the first-formed earlywood and maximum value in the last-formed latewood. The occurrence of false rings and that of compression wood in an annual ring causes a localized increase in specific gravity. The change in specific gravity at the false growth ring boundary is slight and gradual, whereas at the true annual rings boundary the change is steep and abrupt. The specific gravity in the first-formed earlywood portion gives the most consistent value as compared to whole earlywood, whole latewood and whole ring when studied around the circumference.The financial support from University Grants Commission (India) is gratefully acknowledged  相似文献

To investigate the relations between growth and the wood properties of Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi), six sample trees of varied ages and radial growth were felled and the ring width, ring density, percentage of latewood, and some other factors were determined. There were significant differences in ring density and percentage of latewood between sample trees with vigorous growth and those with poor growth. In corewood the ring density decreased with increasing ring width for all sample trees, whereas in outerwood this trend did not appear. Moreover, the latewood width increased with the increment of ring width only in outerwood, whereas there was almost no change in the corewood. The variation in patterns of ring width, ring density, and percentage of latewood in the radial direction and the relation with height was also studied.Part of this report was presented at the 47th annual meeting of the Japan Wood Research Society, Kochi, April 1997  相似文献

对10个10年生日本落叶松无性系的木材基本密度、管胞参数进行了测定.结果表明:木材基本密度,早、晚材管胞宽度和早材长宽比无性系间差异显著;木材基本密度,早、晚材管胞长度,早晚材管胞宽度和早晚材长宽比径向变异模式相似,即从髓心向外以曲线形式不断增加,有时亦有起伏;早材从髓心向外以近似直线的形式缓慢增加,晚材从髓心向外以曲线形式增加,初期增加幅度较大,到一定年龄后趋于水平变化并略有波动;材质性状与树木年轮间的关系以对数方程、幂函数方程、指数方程拟合效果较好;除了晚材壁腔比和早材壁厚外,其它木材性质的重复力均在0.5以上,受中度或中度以上的遗传制约,按照20%的选择率,长宽比和晚材管胞长能获得较高的遗传增益.  相似文献

Abstract

Wood properties, including tracheid cross-sectional dimensions, show a large degree of variation. To improve the properties of products made from wood, different methods to control variation have been developed. This study aims to determine the theoretical efficiency of three control strategies: the fractionation of pulped tracheids into earlywood and latewood, the separation of juvenile and mature wood, and sorting of logs according to tree size. The efficiency of each method was studied by first constructing virtual trees from measured tracheid cross-sectional dimensions, then simulating the efficiency of above-mentioned methods. The tracheid dimension data include Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). The simulations show that separation into earlywood and latewood classes has the highest theoretical efficiency and yields the lowest variances in raw material. Classification into juvenile and mature wood groups is the second most efficient method, and the sorting of logs according to the size class of the tree is the least efficient method. It was also concluded that the variation in cell-wall thickness and radial diameter mainly originates from differences between earlywood and latewood, whereas the variation in tangential diameter mainly originates from differences between mature and juvenile wood.  相似文献

Abstract

Commercial thinning has recently been applied in the boreal forest of Quebec (Canada) to increase the volume growth of the residual trees. We aimed to discover if the growth response influences the transversal tracheid dimension of thinned black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) and Jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) stands at 0.2 m stem height. All 20 studied stands have shown a significant growth response after the treatment (p<0.0001), especially trees with the lowest radial growth before thinning in comparison with the stand mean. Growing conditions met by suppressed trees before thinning might favour them in the competition for light, water and biomass production after the treatment. Trees with a positive growth response did not significantly modify their measured transversal tracheid dimension except for trees which increased twofold their ring-width after thinning. In this case, lumen area and radial cell diameter extended significantly. However individuals with a growth decrease after thinning registered significantly lower values in their ring width, earlywood and latewood cell numbers (p<0.0001) in both species.  相似文献

To examine the differences between juvenile and mature wood, 12 aged sample trees from two areas of Nagano Prefecture were harvested; and the radial development of tracheid length, the ring density, and the relation of the radial growth rate (observed by ring width) with some selected indices of ring structure were investigated. The results proved that the radial variation of tracheid length with ring number can be described by a logarithmic formula, and both plantations reached the demarcation of juvenile and mature wood at age 18. With the segmented regression method, we also analyzed radial variation of mean density and found that the demarcation of juvenile and mature wood was at age 15 for sample trees from Saku and at age 21 for those from Yabuhara. By using the results of estimates from juvenile and mature wood based on ring density, we found that high growth rates resulted when producing lower-density wood during the juvenile period, but these rates did not occur during the mature period. The basic reason for this phenomenon is the variation in patterns of earlywood and latewood in juvenile and mature wood, respectively. This result advised us that when managing plantations of Japanese larch it is necessary to take different measurements at different growth periods.  相似文献

[目的]通过测定和分析广西融水种源红心杉木优树材质性状指标,以了解该地区红心杉木材性状变异规律。[方法]以广西融水种源60株20年生的红心杉木优树为研究材料,测定单株材积、红心率、基本密度、组织比量、管胞性状、微纤丝角等10个材质性状指标,分析各材性性状指标分布和变异规律及性状间的相关关系。[结果]表明:红心率、基本密度、木射线比量、管胞比量、管胞长、管胞宽、管胞长宽比等性状数据分布服从正态分布。融水两个地区红心杉优树轴向薄壁细胞比量的变异系数分别为35.08%和44.97%,变异较大。管胞比量变异系数分别为3.28%和3.56%,变异较小。红心率、木射线比量、管胞长、管胞宽、微纤丝角等性状差异极显著(P0.01),轴向薄壁细胞比量差异显著(P0.05)。10个材质性状间存在12对表型显著相关。[结论]测定的10个性状均是连续性数量性状。早、晚材的管胞长度、管胞宽度和管胞长宽比等性状数据呈从心材至边材逐渐增加的规律。作为重要经济性状的红心率与木射线比量呈极显著正相关(P0.01),单株材积与轴向薄壁细胞比量呈显著正相关(P0.05),而单株材积与基本密度的相关性不显著,这使红心杉木生长量与材性相结合的遗传改良成为可能。  相似文献

We studied the effects of elevated temperature and carbon dioxide concentration ([CO(2)]) alone and together on wood anatomy of 20-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees. The study was conducted in 16 closed chambers, providing a factorial combination of two temperature regimes and two CO(2) concentrations (ambient and elevated), with four trees in each treatment. The climate scenario included a doubling of [CO(2)] and a corresponding increase of 2-6 degrees C in temperature at the site depending on the season. Anatomical characteristics analyzed were annual earlywood, latewood and ring widths, intra-ring wood densities (earlywood, latewood and mean wood density), tracheid width, length, wall thickness, lumen diameter, wall thickness:lumen diameter ratio and mass per unit length (coarseness), and numbers of rays, resin canals and tracheids per xylem cross-sectional area. Elevated [CO(2)] increased ring width in four of six treatment years; earlywood width increased in the first two years and latewood width in the third year. Tracheid walls in both the earlywood and latewood tended to become thicker over the 6-year treatment period when temperature or [CO(2)] was elevated alone, whereas in the combined treatment they tended to become thinner relative to the tracheids of trees grown under ambient conditions. Latewood tracheid lumen diameters were larger in all the treatments relative to ambient conditions over the 6-year period, whereas lumen diameters in earlywood increased only in response to elevated [CO(2)] and were 3-6% smaller in the treatments with elevated temperature than in ambient conditions. Tracheid width, length and coarseness were greater in trees grown in elevated than in ambient temperature. The number of resin canals per mm(2) decreased in the elevated [CO(2)] treatment and increased in the elevated temperature treatments relative to ambient conditions. The treatments decreased the number of rays and tracheids per mm(2) of cross-sectional area, the greatest decrease occurring in the elevated [CO(2)] treatment. It seemed that xylem anatomy was affected more by elevated temperature than by elevated [CO(2)] and that the effects of temperature were confined to the earlywood.  相似文献

Genetic parameters for various wood density traits were estimated in 29-year-old trees of 18 full-sib families of hybrid larch (Larix gmelinii var. japonica × Larix kaempferi) F1. Intra-ring density variation (IDV) was also evaluated using a model that expresses the pattern curve from earlywood to latewood as a power function. A high IDV indicates an abrupt change in wood density from earlywood to latewood. The ring width and wood density traits of individual rings were determined by X-ray densitometry. Overall wood density (RD) was shown to increase with increasing ring number, ranging from 0.42–0.59 g/cm3, whereas IDV of individual rings decreased gradually from pith outwards. Estimates of individual tree narrow-sense heritability of RD and IDV were 0.66 and 0.67, respectively. IDV showed negative genetic and phenotypic correlations with RD (r g = −0.99, r p = −0.72). The predicted genetic gains in latewood proportion and IDV were higher than that of RD. These results suggest that the intra-ring density variation is under moderate genetic control equivalent to wood density. The trend of increasing wood density from earlywood to latewood was associated with changes in both tracheid diameter and cell wall thickness.  相似文献

Genetic parameters were estimated for wood and growth traits in two 19-yr-old clonal trials and a 40-yr-old full-sib progeny trial of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.]. In the clonal trials high (>0.4) broad-sense heritabilities were found for wood density traits, lignin content, number of internal cracks, growth traits, spiral grain and number of resin canals. Moderate (0.2–0.4) heritabilities were found for tracheid lumen diameter and cell wall thickness, microfibril angle and tracheid length, while low heritabilities (<0.2) were found for pulp yield, fibre strength, wood stiffness and wood colour. Lignin content and pulp yield showed low genetic variation, whereas the genotypic coefficient of variation for most other traits ranged between 5 and 15%. Most traits showed low levels of genotype by environment interaction. Among the wood properties, latewood proportion, earlywood density and ring density showed significant, adverse correlations with volume in both clonal trials.  相似文献

A comprehensive analysis on the variation pattern of early- and latewood tracheid morphological parameters along tree (Cunninghamia lanceolata Hook.) height, including length and width, wall thickness, tissue proportion, cell wall percentage, width of growth rings, and on the relationship among them are conducted. The results indicate an initially rapid and then gentle increase of tracheid length and width, thickness of the radial wall and tangential wall of tracheid, area percentage of tracheid from pith to outward, while S2 microfibril angle (Mfa) of tracheid, and rays percentage gradually decrease and then tend to be stable. The variation of all anatomical parameters but earlywood cell wall thickness shows no significance along tree height. The radial variation pattern of width of growth rings is characterized with initially slight decrease followed immediately by a rapid and then much more gentle increase from pith to outward. 对广西南宁地区林科所引自津巴布韦10年生的10个湿地松家系的材性和生长因子进行了遗传变异分析。结果如下:(1)湿地松材性和生长因子都具有中等以上的家系遗传力,各因子家系间差异显著,特别是管胞长度、树高和材积指数家系间差异极显著,具有较大的遗传改良潜力。(2)基本密度与晚材率间具有中等程度的正向表型和遗传相关关系,与管胞长度为弱的负向表型相关和遗传相关;晚材率与管胞长度为弱的负向表型和遗传相关。生长性状间存在着极显著的正向表型和遗传型相关关系。基本密度和晚材率与生长因子间为弱的正向遗传相关;管胞长度与生长因子间具有弱的负向表型相关和极显著的负向遗传相关关系。(3)树高对湿地松材性具有较高的间接选择效应。  相似文献
