The nematode populations of 93 abomasa of ewes from Middle-Atlas (Morocco) were studied over a period of 3 years. The main species present were Ostertagia circumcincta, Marshallagia marshalli, Trichostrongylus axei and T. vitrinus; less frequent species were O. ostertagi and O. trifurcata. Two peaks of infection were recorded, 1 at the end of winter or the beginning of spring (February--March), and another in autumn (September). The first population peak consisted mostly of O. circumcincta and T. axei, and the second population peak, in autumn, had a high prevalence of M. marshalli and T. vitrinus.  相似文献

The abomasa of 163 Svalbard reindeers (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) from Nordenski?ld Land, Spitsbergen (78 degrees N, 15 degrees E) were examined for adult and juvenile nematodes. Spitsbergen has midnight sun from late April to late August, arctic night from late October to mid-February, permafrost, and snow cover from October to June. Plant growth is restricted to 6-8 weeks, usually starting mid-June. In the reindeer calves, which are born in June prevalence and intensity of infection increased over the winter. All young (1 year) and adult (older than 1 year) reindeers were infected. Variations in worm burden, fraction of adult nematodes, male to female ratio in the nematodes, number of adult nematodes, number of juvenile nematodes, and distribution of juvenile nematodes on length groups were analysed for relationships with sex and age of host, and time of the year. The material was further analysed for relationships between the reindeer's content of stored fat and worm burden and its elements. It is concluded that transmission of nematodes to the reindeer continues over the winter and that arrested larval development has not been strongly selected for in this High Arctic locality. Infection continued to increase in adult males but not in adult females with age. This is explained as a balance between gain and loss of worms in the females connected to levelling off of food intake at end of somatic growth. In adult male reindeers there was a negative trend between stored fat and infection at all seasons. In reproducing females there were significant negative relationships in winter-spring, while in yeld females no significant relationship was found. The nematodes belonged to the following taxa: Ostertagia gruehneri m. gruehneri, O. gruehneri m. arcticus, Marshallagia marshalli m. marshalli, M. marshalli. m. occidentalis, Teladorsagia circumcincta m. circumcincta, T. circumcincta. m. trifurcata, and T. circumcincta. m. davtiani. There appears not to be any specially adapted species among the helminth parasites of reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) and muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) in the High Arctic. In the Low Arctic Uminmakstrongylus pallikuukensis of muskoxen may be an example of such adaptation.  相似文献

The systematics of the Ostertagiinae is unsettled with no agreement on how many genera and species are present in cattle and sheep. Ten species of Ostertagiinae are commonly parasitic in cattle and sheep. The males can be identified on the basis of differences in morphology of spicules and genital cones but the females of most species cannot be identified. The species-level systematics have been complicated by the proposal that the ten species are polymorphs of only five species. The systematics at genus level has been complicated by the use of numerous genera for the ten species, at present most commonly Ostertagia, Teladorsagia and Marshallagia. This report (1) describes the current knowledge of the systematics and (2) provides diagnoses of the genera recommended for the ten species. The morphology of the ten species was studied to determine whether characteristics could be found to identify females or to further differentiate the males. Characters studied included the system of longitudinal and surface cuticular ridges (synlophe), the internal morphology of the esophagus and the orientation of rays of the copulatory bursa. The study of species morphology resulted in additional support for the polymorphism proposal. All minor species were found to be identical to their major species in characteristics of the synlophe, esophagus and rays of the copulatory bursa. Two recent classifications of the Ostertagiinae both recommended the use of the genus Teladorsagia for the species T. circumcincta and the two minor species that occur with it, T. trifurcata and T. davtiani. Teladorsagia is characterized by a copulatory bursa in which the five lateral rays are arranged 2-2-1 and a ventral swelling of the genital cone (proconus) is absent. One pair of species, Marshallagia marshalli (major species) and Ostertagia occidentalis (minor species) should be included in the genus Marshallagia. This genus has been characterized by an elongated bursa in which the posterior pair of lateral rays are much longer than the ventral pair. The remaining two pairs of species (O. ostertagi and its minor species O. lyrata, and O. leptospicularis and its minor species O. kolchida) and O. bisonis belong in the genus Ostertagia which is characterized by a 2-1-2 arrangement of the five lateral rays of the copulatory bursa and the presence of a proconus.  相似文献

Exsheathed infective larvae (L 3) of 19 species of nematodes were tested for infectivity in either sheep or cattle after they had been frozen in 0,9% NaCl solution, stored for a relatively short time in the gas phase of liquid nitrogen and subsequently thawed. In addition, 13 of these species were tested after similar storage for up to 18 months. In sheep, Haemonchus contortus, Ostertagia circumcincta, Trichostrongylus axei, Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Nematodirus spathiger and Oesophagostomum columbianum were viable after 2 years of cryopreservation, a mean of greater than 90% of the L 3 being alive when thawed after this period. Similar results were obtained with Chabertia ovina L 3 after 18 months and with Marshallagia marshalli, Trichostrongylus falculatus and Dictyocaulus filaria, after a short period of freezing. On the other hand, Gaigeria pachyscelis and Strongyloides papillosus survived freezing for up to 7 months but neither was viable at the end of this period, nor was exsheathed G. pachyscelis viable without freezing. Most of these infestations were established by inoculating the infective larvae into the abomasum and/or duodenum. M. marshalli, T. falculatus and C. ovina also proved infective after oral dosing. D. filaria, the only other species tested by this route, was not infective when dosed per os after thawing. The infective larvae of the bovine nematodes, Haemonchus placei, Ostertagia ostertagi, Nematodirus helvetianus, Oesophagostomum radiatum, Cooperia pectinata and Cooperia punctata survived freezing for a mean of 26 months, greater than 90% being alive on thawing, but infectivity was generally lower than with the same genera in sheep. Even when not frozen, exsheathed Bunostomum phlebotomum was non-infective. When Cooperia spp. after thawing were tested for infectivity by the oral route, more worms developed in one calf infested orally than in another infested by inoculation into the duodenum. Ova of H. contortus, M. marshalli, O. circumcincta, T. colubriformis, T. falculatus, N. spathiger, C. ovina, H. placei, O. ostertagi, Cooperia spp. and N. helvetianus were recovered from the faeces of animals infested with cryopreserved L 3. No ova of O. columbianum or O. radiatum were recovered from faeces, because differential larval counts were performed before they were patent. Nevertheless, gravid females were obtained post-mortem. Frozen L 3 of N. helvetianus were used to re-establish a pure strain in calves, 2,3 million ova being recovered from infestations with 10 670 L 3 frozen for 26 months. The infectivity of the progeny of frozen L 3 was tested with M. marshalli and C. ovina. In both instances infectivity was high and the worms which developed also produced ova, thus completing the cycle. This appears to be the first report of infective larvae of parasitic nematodes retaining their infectivity after being frozen in liquid nitrogen (gas phase) for longer than 2 years. This is also apparently the first time that M. marshalli T. colubriformis, T. falculatus, T. axei, N. spathiger, C...  相似文献

Five hundred and eight farm dogs in mid-Wales were treated with arecoline acetarsol during 1975. Cestodes recovered from their faeces were identified as follows: Echinococcusgranulosus, Taenia hydatigena, Taenia multiceps, Taenia ovis, Taenia pisiformis, Taenia serialis, and Dipylidium caninum. Many dogs were treated on three different occasions during the 12 months, and changes in the prevalence over this period were shown. The greatest rise in prevalence rate from January to May was seen for E. granulosus while T. hydatigena was most prevalent in January. All other species, except T. serialis, were found in low numbers throughout the year.  相似文献

A pregnant female Cape giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis giraffa) died from an unknown cause in the Aitana Zoo, Alicante, Spain. Neither clinical signs nor macroscopic lesions were observed at necropsy. The alimentary tract was removed and examined for parasites. A total of 2 724 nematodes were found, including Camelostrongylus mentulatus, Trichostrongylus axei, Ostertagia ostertagi, Teladorsagia circumcincta, Teladorsagia trifurcata, Marshallagia marshalli, Trichostrongylus vitrinus, Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Spiculopteragia asymmetrica and Trichuris giraffae. Only T. giraffae and C. mentulatus have been previously reported from giraffes. The other nematodes are common in mouflons, fallow and red deer, which can usually be found in the same paddock as the giraffes in Aitana Zoo. Although its occurrence is unusual in this host, C. mentulatus was the most abundant nematode in our giraffe. This parasite has been related to disease, and even death, in several wild ruminants.  相似文献

The gastrointestinal helminth fauna of 24 Barbary sheep or Aoudad (Ammotragus lervia sahariensis) maintained in the Parque de Rescate de la Fauna Sahariana (PRFS, CSIC, Almeria, Spain) was analyzed. Most animals (87.5 %) were parasitized, and multiple infections were highly present. The following species were identified: Camelostrongylus mentulatus, Teladorsagia circumcincta, Marshallagia marshalli, Ostertagia ostertagi, O. leptospicularis, O. lyrata, Haemonchus contortus, Teladorsagia trifurcata, Trichostrongylus vitrinus, T. colubriformis, T. probolorus, T. capricola, Nematodirus spathiger, N. abnormalis, N. filicollis, N. helvetianus, Trichuris spp. and Skrjabinema ovis. Teladorsagia circumcincta was the most prevalent nematode in abomasum (52.6 %) followed by C. mentulatus (50 %). However, this latter nematode had the greater mean intensity and abundance. In the small intestine, T. colubriformis and T. vitrinus had the highest prevalence (36.4 %); the last one showed also the greater mean intensity and abundance. It should be emphasized the presence of Skrjabinema ovis (prevalence 39.1 %) in the large intestine, showing the greater mean abundance and intensity, although with a low values. Camelostrongylus mentulatus could be the most primitive nematode of the family trichostrongylidae recovered in this study; attending to its high prevalence, mean abundance and mean intensity, the possible specificity between this parasite and the Aoudad is discussed.  相似文献

Tasmanian devils were fed infective cystic material of Taenia ovis, T. hydatigena and Echinococcus granulosus and later killed and examined for adult tapeworms. No infections with T. ovis were found after feeding 23 cysts to 8 devils. T. hydatigena were recovered from 5 to 41 devils and 10 worms established after feeding 417 cysticerci. No E. granulosus were recovered from any of 3 devils. Specimens of T. hydatigena appeared to develop as well in devils as in dogs. From these and previous results devils could be successful hosts to T. hydatigena and T. ovis. A survey of 320 devils failed to detect any natural infections with any of these 3 species.  相似文献

Infective larvae of selected batched of the following nematode species from sheep and cattle were examined for survival and infectivity (by injection into either the abomasum, the duodenum, or the jugular vein) after having been stored in liquid nitrogen for 103-136 months: Haemonchus contortus, Haemonchus placei, Ostertagia circumcincta, Ostertagia ostertagi, Marshallagia marshalli, Cooperia spp., Trichostrongylus axei, Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Trichostrongylus falculatus, Nematodirus spathiger, Nematodirus helvetianus, Oesophagostomum columbianum, Oesophagostomum radiatum, Chabertia ovina and Dictyocaulus filaria. Excluding D. filaria, a mean of 97.7% of the ovine and 96.0% of the bovine nematode larvae were alive when thawed. Compared with previous investigations in this series, little or no reduction occurred with time in either the survival or the viability of the nematodes from cattle, or in the survival of those from sheep. In contrast, the larvae developed poorly in sheep, possibly owing to parenteral treatment of the animals with ivermectin at a dosage of 0.4 mg kg-1, either 6 or 8 days before they were infected.  相似文献

Calves were vaccinated with antigens collected during in vitro cultivation of the larval stages of Taenia ovis, T. hydatigena or T. saginata, and challenged 4 weeks later with 4 000 T. saginata eggs. Calves vaccinated with T. saginata antigen were highly resistant to the challenge infection and those groups vaccinated with T. ovis and T. hydatigena were also significantly resistant.  相似文献

The present study was conducted with the objective to investigate the seasonal epidemiological prevalence of gastrointestinal tract (GIT) nematodes in different age groups, sexes and breeds (genotypes) of sheep through necropsy and faecal analysis over a period of 2 years in Kashmir valley, India. A total of 1533 sheep were examined [faecal examination: 1035 (year 1: 561, year 2: 474); necropsy: 498 (year 1: 232, year 2: 266)]. Out of these, 945 (61.64%) were found infected [faecal examination: 697 (67.34%, year 1: 390 (69.51%), year 2: 307 (46.99%); necropsy: 248 (49.79%, year 1: 123 (53.01%), year 2: 125 (64.69%)] with GIT nematodes. The over all prevalence of GIT nematodes in sheep in year 1 was 64.76 and 58.37% in year 2 (P=0.04). The parasites in decreasing order of prevalence (%) in sheep were Haemonchus contortus (59.6); Ostertagia circumcincta (38.0); Bunostomum trigonocephalum (37.7); Chabertia ovina (37.7); Trichostrongylus spp. (33.9); Nematodirus spathiger (29.4); Oesophagostomum columbianum (28.4); Trichuris ovis (23.5) and Marshallagia marshalli (22.1). Season, sex, age, and genotype were the factors that influenced the epidemiological prevalence of GIT nematodes in sheep in the present study. The maximum nematode infection was observed in summer season and lowest in winter (P=0.0005). Local Kashmiri breed was less infected as compared to other genotypes (P>0.05). Lower age groups were more infected than adult animals (P>/=0.05). Prevalence was higher in rams (males) than eves (females) (P>0.05). The present study will initially be of great significance to add to the existing knowledge of the epidemiology of GIT nematodes of small ruminants and the findings will be quite helpful to devise the appropriate control and prophylactic strategies for GIT nematodiasis of sheep reared under the temperate agro-climatic conditions.  相似文献

Detection and identification of Theileria and Babesia species in 920 apparently healthy small ruminants in eastern Turkey, as well as parasite genetic diversity, was investigated using a specifically designed reverse line blot (RLB) assay. The hypervariable V4 region of the 18S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene was amplified and hybridized to a membrane onto which catchall and species-specific oligonucleotide probes were covalently linked. Three Theileria and one Babesia genotype were identified. Comparison of the Theileria genotypes revealed 93.6-96.2% similarity among their 18S rRNA genes. Two Theileria shared 100% and 99.7% similarity with the previously described sequences of T. ovis and Theileria sp. OT3, respectively. A third Theileria genotype was found to be clearly different from previously described Theileria species. The genotype was provisionally designated as Theileria sp. MK. The Babesia genotype shared 100% similarity with Babesia ovis. The survey indicated a high prevalence of piroplasm infections in small ruminants (38.36%). Theileria spp. prevalence was 36.08%. Prevalence of B. ovis was 5.43%. The most abundant Theileria species identified was T. ovis (34.56%) followed by Theileia sp. MK (1.30%) and Theileria sp. OT3 (0.43%).  相似文献

A survey was carried in North Khorasan Province, Iran in 2010–2011, designed to identify Theileria spp. infections of both sheep and ticks. The tick species were also examined. Ninety sheep from different flocks were clinically examined, and blood samples and ixodid ticks were collected. Light microscopy of blood smears revealed Theileria spp. infection in 37 (41.1 %), while 74 (82.2 %) of blood samples were positive using semi-nested PCR. Theileria ovis, Theileria lestoquardi, and mixed infection were detected in 63/90 (70 %), 5/90 (5.5 %), and 6/90 (6.6 %) of samples, respectively. Of the 434 ticks that were collected, the most prevalent species was Rhipicephalus turanicus (69.3 %) followed by Hyalomma marginatum turanicum (18.4 %), Dermacentor marginatus (6.4 %), and Rhipicephalus bursa (5.7 %). The ticks were separated into 42 tick pools, and the salivary glands were dissected out in 0.85 % (w/v) saline under a stereomicroscope and examined using semi-nested PCR. Three pools of H. marginatum turanicum salivary glands were infected with T. ovis and T. lestoquardi, and one pool of R. turanicus was infected with T. ovis. Based on these results, it is concluded that the prevalence of T. ovis is higher than T. lestoquardi and that H. marginatum turanicum and R. turanicus are likely vectors of T. lestoquardi and T. ovis in this area.  相似文献

The prevalence of antibodies to the protozoan parasites Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum were investigated by the direct agglutination test (DAT) and cELISA, respectively, in 160 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), 177 sheep and 178 cattle sharing pastures in Galicia (Northwest Spain). The seroprevalence for T. gondii was 13.7% in roe deer, 57% in sheep and 7.3% in cattle. The seroprevalence for N. canimum was 6.8%, 10.1% and 24.1% in roe deer, sheep and cattle, respectively. Statistically significant differences were observed between sheep and the other species for T. gondii and between cattle and the other ruminants for N. caninum. Only 19/515 animals were positive for both, T. gondii and N. caninum. Statistically significant differences were observed among different geographical areas for T. gondii but not for Neospora, seroprevalence being higher in the coastal area lower than in other areas. This study reveals a widespread exposure to T. gondii in Galician ruminants, and therefore, those species, particularly sheep, should be regarded as a potential source of infection for humans.  相似文献

Anaplasma species are transmitted by ticks and cause diseases in humans and animals. These pathogens infect sheep, an economically important domestic animal worldwide. The current study was designed to characterize in 200 animals the infection with Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Anaplasma ovis and the genetic diversity of A. ovis strains collected from a naturally infected sheep flock with poor health condition. Sheep had 98% seroprevalence to Anaplasma spp. antibodies. PCR results confirmed the presence of A. phagocytophilum and A. ovis DNA in 11.5% and 37% of the sheep, respectively. Concurrent infections were detected in 6.5% of the sheep. Seventy-one adult ticks were collected from 45 sheep with infestations ranging from one to 15 ticks per animal. The analysis of A. ovis msp4 sequences demonstrated a previously unreported polymorphism for this pathogen with 17 different haplotypes in infected sheep. These results demonstrated that, although A. ovis msp4 haplotypes may be less variable when compared with Anaplasma marginale and A. phagocytophilum strains on a global scale, genetic polymorphisms occur in this locus in strains obtained from an infected sheep flock with poor health condition.  相似文献

Two hundred and fifty wild sheep, Ovis ammon orientalis, and sixty five gazelles, Gazella subguttorosa, from different National Parks and Protected Regions of Iran, were shot and examined for the presence of metazoan parasites. Among the parasites recovered, Moniezia benedeni, Helicometra giardi, Cysticercus tenuicollis, Fasciola SPP. and Dicrocoelium dendriticum were absent in gazelle, whereas the other parasites were seen in both species of animals examined.Five adult tapeworms (Moniezia expansa, M. benedeni, Helicometra giardi, Stilesia globipunctata, and Avitellina centripunctata), three larval cestodes (Hydatid cyst, Cysticerucus tenuicollis and C. ovis) and three trematodes (Fasciola hepatica, F. gigantica and Dicrocoelium dendriticum) were found in the infected animals.  相似文献
