Cerebrospinal fluid of 22 dogs with histologically confirmed granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis was analyzed, retrospectively. Seventeen dogs had cisternal CSF analysis, 4 dogs had lumbar CSF analysis, and 1 dog had both. For cisternal CSF, the mean +/- SEM total WBC count was 800.8 +/- 300.9 cells/microliter. The WBC differential count was predominantly lymphoplasmacytic cells, but 13 of the 18 cisternal CSF had polymorphonuclear (PMN) cells, and the mean +/- SEM PMN cell percentage was 18.6 +/- 5.3%. The mean +/- SEM total protein content of cisternal CSF was 255.8 +/- 98 mg/dl. Of 5 cisternal CSF pressures measured, 4 were within the normal range. The mean +/- SEM total WBC count and total protein content of lumbar CSF were 533.4 +/- 256.5 cells/mu/microliter and 163.2 +/- 25 mg of protein/dl, respectively. As with cisternal CSF, the WBC differential count of lumbar CSF was predominantly lymphoplasmacytic cells. Of 5 lumbar CSF, 4 contained PMN cells, but the percentage was less than the PMN cell percentage of cisternal CSF. Although variable, the general pattern of CSF abnormality associated with granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis was different from the CSF abnormalities commonly seen with viral, bacterial, or mycotic encephalitides.  相似文献

Background: Choroid plexus tumors (CPTs) comprise approximately 10% of all primary brain tumors in dogs. The clinical utility of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis, or both in the presumptive diagnosis of CPTs has not been determined.
Objectives: To report MRI and CSF findings in dogs with CPT and determine if there are distinguishing features that allow clinical discrimination between the tumor grades.
Animals: Fifty-six client-owned dogs with naturally occurring CPT.
Methods: Retrospective case series. The inclusion criterion was histologically confirmed CPT. Blinded review of cranial MRI and cisternal CSF analysis was performed.
Results: Thirty-six of 56 dogs had a choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC) and 20 had a choroid plexus papilloma (CPP). Golden Retrievers were overrepresented compared with the hospital population (frequency 3.7 times that expected, confidence interval 95%= 2.0–6.7, P < .0002). Median CSF protein concentration in CPCs (108 mg/dL, range 27–380 mg/dL) was significantly higher than in CPPs (34 mg/dL, range 32–80 mg/dL) ( P = .002). Only dogs with CPCs had a CSF protein concentration >80 mg/dL. Cytological evidence of malignancy in CSF was seen in 7 of 15 CPCs. Only CPCs had evidence of intraventricular or subarachnoid metastases on MRI.
Conclusions and Clinical Importance: MRI, CSF analysis or both can help to differentiate between CPPs and CPCs, and may provide valuable prognostic and pretreatment information.  相似文献

Sixteen choroid plexus (CP) tumors in 12 male and four female adult dogs were analyzed microscopically. Tumors were in the lateral (six), third (six), and fourth (four) ventricles. The average age of the dogs was 6 years. Tumors were classified by the following criteria: 1) choroid plexus papilloma (CPP), which resembled normal choroid plexus and had low mitotic activity; 2) choroid plexus papilloma (CPP), which resembled normal choroid plexus and had low mitotic activity; 2) choroid plexus papilloma with atypical features (atypical CPP), which had increased cellular density, nuclear atypia, two to four mitoses per 40x microscopic field, necrosis, and infiltration of the brain parenchyma and/or leptomeninges; and 3) choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC), which had marked nuclear atypia, poorly formed papillae, greater than four mitoses per 40x microscopic field, abnormal mitotic figures, and/or extraneural metastasis. The 16 tumors were classified either as CPP or atypical CPP (none as CPC). Statistically significant associations between brain infiltration and necrosis and atypical CPP were identified. Immunohistochemical studies in 11 tumors demonstrated staining for keratin in three tumors, two of which also reacted with carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). There was no immunoreactivity with glial fibrillary acidic protein or epithelial membrane antigen. Choroid plexus from one of three control dogs stained focally for cytokeratin only. It is concluded that normal choroid plexus and CP tumors in the dog express epithelial, but not glial differentiation.  相似文献

Lumbar and cisternal CSF from 31 healthy dogs were analyzed and compared statistically. The mean total protein of the lumbar CSF samples was 28.68 mg/dl; the mean total protein of cisternal CSF was 13.97 mg/dl. The mean total WBC count of lumbar CSF was 0.55 cells/microliter; the mean WBC count of cisternal CSF was 1.45 cells/microliter. Statistical analysis indicated that the protein and WBC differences between the 2 types of CSF were significant (P = less than 0.001 and P = less than 0.01, respectively).  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine CSF characteristics associated with intracranial meningiomas in dogs. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 56 dogs with intracranial meningiomas. PROCEDURES: Medical records of dogs with a histopathologic diagnosis of intracranial meningioma, in which CSF analysis had been performed, were reviewed. Information concerning total nucleated cell counts (TNCCs) and differential nucleated cell counts, RBC counts, and total protein concentration in CSF; seizure history and glucocorticoid administration; and location of meningiomas was recorded. RESULTS: TNCCs < 5 cells/microL were detected in 41 of 56 (73%) dogs; 5 of 56 (9%) dogs had TNCCs > 50 cells/microL. Analysis of CSF revealed predominantly neutrophilic pleocytosis in < 20% of dogs. There was a significant association between meningioma location (caudal portion of the cranial fossa or middle and rostral portion of the cranial fossae) and increased TNCCs (> or = 5 cells/microL). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results were significantly different from those routinely reported in the veterinary literature. Neutrophilic pleocytosis, especially with TNCCs > 50 cells/microL, was not typical in CSF samples from dogs with intracranial meningiomas. Neutrophilic pleocytosis may not be detected in CSF samples from dogs with meningiomas located within the middle or rostral portion of the cranial fossae.  相似文献

To describe the signs that may be associated with intracranial inflammatory conditions, magnetic resonance (MR) images of 25 dogs that had inflammatory cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were mixed with those of a control group of 40 dogs that had CSF negative for inflammatory disease and reviewed without knowledge of the clinical signs or diagnosis. CSF was considered inflammatory if the protein level was > 0.25 g/l and the white cell count was > 5 mm(-3). Abnormalities were found by MR imaging in 19 (76%) dogs with inflammatory CSF. Two dogs had focal lesions, 10 had multifocal lesions, and seven had diffuse lesions. Lesions affected all divisions of the brain. Mass effect was identified in seven (28%) dogs, including one that had a choroid plexus carcinoma. Lesions were hyperintense in T2-weighted images in 18 dogs and hypointense in T1-weighted images in six dogs. Multifocal or diffuse intraaxial lesions that were hyperintense in T2-weighted images were observed in 17 (68%) dogs with inflammatory CSF. Administration of gadolinium resulted in enhancement of intraaxial lesions in nine (36%) dogs and enhancement of meninges in seven (28%) dogs. Six (24%) dogs with inflammatory CSF had images interpreted as normal.  相似文献

This study investigates the clinical and pathologic findings associated with 173 primary brain tumors in our hospital population of dogs that presented between the years 1986 and 2002. Of the 173 primary brain tumors, 78 (45%) were meningiomas, 29 (17%) were astrocytomas, 25 (14%) were oligodendrogliomas, 12 (7%) were choroid plexus tumors, and 7 (4%) were primary central nervous system lymphomas. Smaller numbers of glioblastomas (n = 5), primitive neuroectodermal tumors (n = 5), histiocytic sarcomas (n = 5), vascular hamartomas (n = 4), and unclassified gliomas (n = 3) were identified. One dog had both a meningioma and an astrocytoma. Most tumors were located within the telencephalon, and seizures were the most common clinical presenting complaint. Of 168 tumors for which a location in the brain was recorded at postmortem examination, 79 were found to involve more than 1 brain division. Other neoplasms unrelated to the primary brain tumor were identified on postmortem examination in 39 dogs (23%). Intrathoracic and intraabdominal neoplasms were present at necropsy in 13 and 24 cases, respectively. Based on the results of this study, thoracic radiographs and abdominal ultrasonography may be indicated to look for extracranial neoplasia prior to advanced imaging of the brain or intracranial surgery.  相似文献

Since computed tomography (CT) was introduced to veterinary medicine in the beginnings of the 80s, the CT of the skull has mainly been used for the diagnosis of brain tumors. The present study includes 18 dogs and five cats, all patients of the Clinic of Small Animals of the School of Veterinary Medicine Hannover. After a CT of their skull was made, a primary intracranial neoplasm was confirmed by a pathomorphological and -histogical examination post mortem. Four of the five cats had a meningioma, one cat an astrocytoma. With five cases the meningioma also predominated in the dogs, followed by primary lymphoma with four cases. An astrocytoma, an oligodendroglioma and a choroid plexus papilloma were diagnosed respectively in two dogs. A pituitary gland tumor, a germ cell tumor and a medulloblastoma represented individual cases. Based on the pathomorphologically and -histologically confirmed diagnosis, characteristics of these primary brain neoplasms can be found in their CT image. However, changes are not pathognomonic for a certain type of tumor; a definitive diagnosis cannot be made from the CT image.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Intracranial meningiomas are the most common primary brain tumors in dogs. Classification of meningiomas by tumor grade and subtype has not been reported, and the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics for predicting tumor subtype and grade has not been investigated. HYPOTHESIS: Canine intracranial meningiomas are a heterogenous group of tumors with differing histological subtypes and grades. Prediction of histopathological classification is possible based on MRI characteristics. ANIMALS: One hundred and twelve dogs with a histological diagnosis of intracranial meningioma. METHODS: Retrospective observational study. RESULTS: Meningiomas were overrepresented in the Golden Retriever and Boxer breeds with no sex predilection. The incidence of specific tumor grades was 56% benign (Grade I), 43% atypical (Grade II), and 1% malignant (Grade III). Grade I histological subtypes included meningothelial (43%), transitional (40%), microcystic (8%), psammomatous (6%), and angiomatous (3%). No statistically significant (P < .05) associations were found among tumor subtype or grade and any of the MRI features studied. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Meningiomas in dogs differ from their counterparts in humans mainly in their higher incidence of atypical (Grade II) tumors observed. MRI characteristics do not allow for prediction of meningioma subtype or grade, emphasizing the necessity of histopathology for antemortem diagnosis. The higher incidence of atypical tumors in dogs may contribute to the poorer therapeutic response in dogs with meningiomas as compared with the response in humans with meningiomas.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To characterize matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9 in CSF of clinically normal dogs. SAMPLE POPULATION: Samples of CSF collected from 23 dogs. PROCEDURE: Dogs were anesthetized, CSF samples were collected, and dogs were then euthanatized. Each CSF sample was evaluated immediately for RBC count, WBC count, and protein and glucose concentrations, and cytologic examination also was performed. Samples were considered normal when protein concentration was < 25 mg/dL and CSF contained < 6WBCs/microL and < 25 RBCs/microL. Samples were stored at -70 degrees C. Sections of brain tissue were collected and processed for histologic examination. The MMPs were evaluated by use of gelatin zymography and a polyclonal antibody-based sandwich ELISA. RESULTS: Mean WBC count for CSF samples was < 1 WBC/microL (range, 0 to 3 WBCs/mL). Mean protein concentration was 12 mg/dL (range, 8 to 17 mg/dL). Mean RBC count was 3.65 RBCs/microL (range, 0 to 21 RBCs/microL). All CSF samples generated a clear band on zymography gels that corresponded to the human commercial standard of proenzyme MMP-2. Other major clear bands were not detected on zymography gels. Bands correlating to MMP-9 were not detected in any samples. The ELISA results revealed a mean +/- SD proenzyme MMP-2 concentration of 5.61 +/- 1.92 ng/mL (range, 3.36 to 10.83 ng/mL). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The proenzyme form of MMP-2 is detectable in CSF of clinically normal dogs, whereas MMP-9 is not detectable. Additional investigation of MMPs in CSF from dogs with various diseases of the nervous system is indicated.  相似文献

During 1986 and 1987, electroencephalographic examinations were done on 8 dogs with intracranial mass lesions confirmed by computerized tomography, biopsy, necropsy, or a combination of these techniques. Tumor types included 1 astrocytoma, 1 undifferentiated glioma, 2 mixed gliomas, 2 meningiomas, 1 choroid plexus papilloma, and 1 cholesterol granuloma. It was found that no EEG pattern was pathognomonic for tumor type or location. Slow-wave activity was observed in the EEG of most of the dogs; asymmetry in amplitude or frequency was observed in approximately half the cases.  相似文献

This study examined immunohistochemical staining patterns for several meningioma variants involving either the brain or spinal cord of dogs. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue from 15 tumors was obtained. The selected tumor group included seven meningothelial, three transitional, two malignant (anaplastic), one myxoid, one papillary, and one osteomatous meningiomas. Tumors were evaluated for reactivity to the following six immunohistochemical markers: vimentin, pancytokeratin, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), S100, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), and synaptophysin. Vimentin expression was detected in all meningiomas, and 14 of 15 tumors demonstrated intense vimentin staining in more than 50% of the neoplastic cells. Pancytokeratin expression was present in 11 of 15 neoplasms; however, positive staining frequently was focal and often involved a small percentage of the neoplastic cells. GFAP expression was detected in a single, anaplastic meningioma. Although expression of NSE and S100 was detected in 12 of 25 meningiomas, the intensity of the staining and the percentage of positive neoplastic cells was highly variable. Synaptophysin was uniformly negative. These results will help to establish immunohistochemical profiles for meningiomas that will improve our ability to correctly differentiate these neoplasms of meningeal origin from central nervous system tumors originating from other sites.  相似文献

Cerebrospinal fluid samples from 2 groups of clinically normal dogs were compared after iopamidol (n = 9) and metrizamide (n = 8) myelography. Iopamidol (200 mg of I/ml) and metrizamide (170 mg of I/ml) were administered by cerebellomedullary injection at dosage of 0.45 ml/kg of body weight. In dogs of both groups, postmyelographic CSF changes included high specific gravity, Pandy score, protein concentration, and WBC count. The high specific gravity and Pandy score were false-positive effects attributed to nonionic contrast media. Although postmyelographic protein concentration and total WBC count were greater in CSF samples from dogs given metrizamide than in those given iopamidol, differences were not statistically significant. The differential WBC counts were consistent with mild, acute leptomeningitis; these findings were supported by results of histologic examination. Iopamidol and metrizamide should be considered low-grade leptomeningeal irritants in dogs.  相似文献

Background: The term “surface epithelium” is used to describe cells, including meningeal, choroid plexus, ependymal, and endothelial cells, that are found in human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and are difficult to distinguish cytologically. We hypothesized that the presence of surface epithelial cells in canine CSF was associated with specific diseases of the central nervous system (CNS). Objectives: In this retrospective study the frequency of surface epithelial cells in CSF from dogs with neurologic disease was investigated along with the potential association with age, specific type of CNS disease, and CSF total nucleated cell count (TNCC) and protein concentration. Methods: The frequency of surface epithelial cells in 359 canine CSF samples was analyzed for 5 disease groups: CNS neoplasia, CNS compression, CNS inflammation, idiopathic epilepsy, and miscellaneous diseases. Groups were also combined into those with and without expected meningeal involvement. Association of the presence of surface epithelial cells in CSF with age, disease type, and CSF TNCC and protein concentration was investigated. Results: Surface epithelial cells were found in 27 of 359 (7.5%) CSF samples: CNS neoplasia 2/30 (6.7%), CNS compression 7/64 (10.9%), CNS inflammation 1/39 (2.6%), idiopathic epilepsy 8/124 (6.5%), and miscellaneous diseases 9/102 (8.8%). Significant associations between surface epithelial cell presence in CSF and age, disease type, CSF TNCC, and CSF protein concentration were not found. Conclusions: The presence of surface epithelial cells was not related to a specific disease group or CSF changes in the studied population. Thus, the presence of surface epithelial cells should be interpreted carefully, as it could represent an incidental finding in CSF specimens.  相似文献

A 5-year-old female cross-breed dog was presented with a 1-month history of progressive changes in the posture of the head and in the gait. At neurological examination the dog showed a central vestibular syndrome lateralized to the left. MRI showed a space occupying lesion within the fourth ventricle, characterized by iso- to hypointensity in T1 and hyperintensity in T2 with a heterogeneous contrast uptake. Histologically, a neoplasia composed of meningothelial cells forming compact whorls with slight atypia, and stellate cells delimitating microcysts containing eosinophilic fluid was observed. Neoplastic cells were positive for vimentin and negative for GFAP and FVIII. A diagnosis of intraventricular microcystic meningioma was achieved. Intraventricular meningiomas in dogs are rarely encountered and reports of meningiomas within the fourth ventricle have not yet been described. Although choroid plexus tumor is the most frequent neoplasia localized in the fourth ventricle, intraventricular meningioma should be included in the differential diagnoses.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Meningioma is the most common primary intraspinal nervous system tumor in dogs. Clinical findings, clinicopathologic data, and treatment of these tumors have been reported sporadically, but little information is available regarding cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis, histologic tumor grade, or efficacy of radiation therapy as an adjunct to cytoreductive surgery. ANIMALS: Dogs with histologically confirmed intraspinal meningiomas (n = 34). METHODS: A retrospective study of dogs with intraspinal meningiomas between 1984 and 2006 was carried out. Signalment, historical information, physical examination, clinicopathologic data, radiation therapy protocols, surgery reports, and all available images were reviewed. All tumors were histologically classified and graded as defined by the international World Health Organization classification scheme for central nervous system tumors. RESULTS: Intraspinal mengiomas in dogs are most common in the cervical spinal cord but can be found throughout the neuraxis. Location is correlated with histologic grade, with grade I tumors more likely to be in the cervical region than grade II tumors. Myelography generally shows an intradural extramedullary compressive lesion. On magnetic resonance imaging, the masses are strongly and uniformly contrast enhancing and a dural tail often is present. CSF analysis usually shows increased protein concentration with mild to moderate mixed pleocytosis. Surgical resection is an effective means of improving neurologic status, and adjunctive radiation therapy may lead to an improved outcome. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Biopsy is necessary for definitive diagnosis, but imaging and CSF analysis can suggest a diagnosis of meningioma. Treatment of meningiomas with surgery and radiation therapy can result in a fair to excellent prognosis.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the protein and cellular composition of CSF in healthy adult ferrets. ANIMALS: 42 clinically normal adult ferrets. PROCEDURE: CSF samples were collected from the cerebellomedullary cistern of anesthetized ferrets by use of disposable 25-gauge, 1.6-cm-long hypodermic needles. Samples were processed within 20 minutes after collection. The number of WBCs and RBCs per microliter of CSF was counted by use of a hemacytometer. The total protein concentration was determined by use of an automated chemistry analyzer. RESULTS: Total WBC counts (range, 0 to 8 cells/microL; mean, 1.59 cells/microL) in CSF of ferrets were similar to reference range values obtained for CSF from other species. Twenty-seven CSF samples had <100 RBCs/microL (mean, 20.3 RBCs/microL). A small but significant effect of blood contamination on WBC counts was found between the 27 CSF samples with <100 RBCs/microL and the remaining samples. Protein concentrations in CSF of ferrets (range, 28.0 to 68.0 mg/dL; mean, 31.4 mg/dL) were higher than has been reported for the CSF of dogs and cats. A significant effect of blood contamination on the CSF protein concentration was not found. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: We have established reference range values for WBC counts and protein concentrations in CSF from healthy adult ferrets that may be useful in the clinical investigation of CNS disease. Results of our study indicate that the WBC count is significantly affected by blood contamination of the CSF sample.  相似文献

An 11-year-old female intact Staffordshire Bull Terrier was referred to the Queen's Veterinary School Hospital at the University of Cambridge with sudden onset of episodic behavioral changes, a mammary mass, and papilledema in the right eye. On physical examination the dog appeared depressed and had a head tilt to the right with anisocoria. Using magnetic resonance imaging, a broad-based lesion that obliterated the fourth ventricle was detected in the right brainstem. There was no evidence of pulmonary metastasis. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was then obtained; fluid analysis showed an increased cell count (165 cells/μL, reference interval 0-7 cells/μL) and total protein (0.30 g/L, reference value <0.25 g/L). Cytologic evaluation revealed a population of atypical epithelial cells arranged in cohesive rafts and characterized by moderate to occasionally marked anisocytosis and anisokaryosis. The appearance was highly suspicious of a malignant epithelial neoplasm. The dog was euthanized and on postmortem examination an asymmetrical nonencapsulated cerebellar mass was found within the choroid plexus of the fourth ventricle with local extension into the cerebellopontine angle. Histologic sections of the cerebellar mass contained arborizing papillary structures covered by a single layer of atypical epithelial cells that showed local infiltration into the adjacent neuropil. The diagnosis was choroid plexus carcinoma. The atypical epithelial cells were negative for pancytokeratin and strongly positive for vimentin. The finding of clusters of choroid plexus epithelial cells in the CSF demonstrates the value of utilizing a relatively noninvasive diagnostic technique for diagnosis of choroid plexus tumors.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Conventional techniques for canine cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis require large sample volumes and are labor intensive and subject to operator variability. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ADVIA120 CSF assay for analysis of canine CSF samples. METHODS: CSF samples collected from 36 healthy control dogs and 17 dogs with neurologic disease were processed in parallel using the automated assay and established manual methods using a hemocytometer and cytocentrifugation. Results for WBC (total nucleated cell) count, RBC count, and differential nucleated cell percentages were compared using Spearman rank correlation coefficients and Bland-Altman bias plots. RESULTS: Correlation coefficients for WBC and RBC counts were 0.57 and 0.83 for controls, and 0.92 and 0.94 for ill dogs, respectively. Coefficients for the percentages of neutrophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes were 0.53, 0.26, and 0.12 for controls and 0.77, 0.92, and 0.70 for dogs with neurologic disease. When data were combined (n=53), correlation coefficients were 0.86 and 0.91 for WBC and RBC counts, and 0.63, 0.43, and 0.30 for neutrophil, lymphocyte, and monocyte percentages. A 9.5% positive bias and 7.0% negative bias were obtained for the ADVIA 120 CSF assay for lymphocytes and macrophages in dogs with neurologic disease with Bland-Altman analysis. A 12.2% positive bias was found for lymphocyte percentage in dogs with neurologic disease. CONCLUSIONS: Manual and automated CSF assays had moderate to excellent correlation for WBC and RBC concentrations, but results were more variable for differential cell percentages. The ADVIA assay may be more useful for assessment of canine CSF with adjustment of cell differentiation algorithms.  相似文献
