Two kinds of surveys on marine environment quality were carried out along the Neapolitan Bay from the winter 1977 to 1980. The first was a general investigation along 60 km of coast, embracing several municipalities. Its purpose was to identify the most consistently polluted areas. The second one was a more limited but prolonged monitoring along about 12 km of coast entirely included in the municipality of Naples. At the beginning of this latter inspection two fecally contaiminated areas were found. These showed an increase in pollution during summer. However during the three years of surveillance a general improvement of the water quality was observed, perhaps due to the use of undersea pipes for the discharge of sewage far from the coast. As a consequence in the summer of 1980, 78% of the sampling points exihibited values ofEscherichia coli below limits prescribed in the Italian standard for bathing water (100E. coli/100 ml), while only 38% of the stations in the summer of 1978 could be considered suitable for bathing.  相似文献

A 2 yr study was conducted in 1987 and 1988 to determine the effects of road salt run-off from New York State highway 28N on chloride levels in four tributary streams to Rich Lake, located in the central Adirondack Mountains of New York. All four study streams exhibited significant increases in chloride concentrations at sampling stations located 50 and 100 m downstream from the highway. Chloride concentrations in downstream samples were as much as 31 times higher than comparative upstream samples. Elevated chloride levels continued throughout the 6 mo period following the termination of winter salt applications. A water chemistry profile developed for Rich Lake revealed a slight increase in chloride content at lower depths.  相似文献

We examined aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblages in six Arkansas low-order streams across three ecoregions. Samples were taken at locations above and below silviculture sites using Best Management Practices (BMPs) and were compared in winter and spring for 1 year prior to logging and 2 years after treatments. Implementation at all sites scored between 89 and 100% in compliance assessments using state BMP guidelines. Deficiencies were generally limited to engineering controls designed to prevent soil erosion; however, no clear evidence of sedimentation was observed in any of the study streams. Water quality variables were similar between sites upstream and downstream of the harvests in all survey periods. Analysis of variance did not indicate reduced taxonomic richness that could clearly be attributed to silviculture operations, but did reveal several significant differences in relative abundance variables that could be associated with negative impacts, primarily at a single site. Euclidean distance indicated that macroinvertebrate assemblage similarity between reference and treatment stations decreased after treatments at two additional study sites. At most sites, however, there was not an assemblage shift from organisms using coarse particulate organic matter as the primary food source to those using fine particulate organic matter downstream of the harvests. Our results indicated that BMPs were moderately to strongly effective in protecting water quality and biological integrity in five of the six study streams.  相似文献

Water quality degradation in the Selangor River will still be present in the years to come since pollutant loads from poultry farms, municipal wastewaters, and industrial wastewaters are not envisaged to be handled effectively. This will be facing the problems of water quality status to use for multiple purposes and to provide its aquatic environment continuously. The water quality evaluation system is used to assess the water quality condition in the river. This system distinguishes two categories of water condition i.e., the water quality index and water quality aptitude. The assessment of water quality for the Selangor River from nine stations along the main stream, which concludes that water has been highly polluted (index 5) immediately downstream of station 02 Selangor River before confluence with Kubu River due to high concentration of microorganisms and immediately downstream of station 06 Selangor River before confluence with Batang Kali River due to high concentrations of microorganisms and suspended particles, was verified. Mineral micropollutants were found to gradually pollute the stream water, ranging from the unpolluted water (index 1) in the upstream to the bad quality (index 4) in the downstream area.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal variations of eight selected water quality measurements were examined for the 26 stations located in the Han River and its tributaries within the city of Seoul from 1993 to 2002. The eight measurements are water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, suspended solid, total nitrogen and total phosphorus. There is no discernable increase or decrease in water quality measurements in four representative stations. A striking longitudinal variation of all water quality measurements is detected for eight stations along the Han River. Water quality dramatically decline in the middle section of the Han River where the river receives inputs from polluted tributaries. All water quality measurements, except pH, exhibit better conditions in the main river group than its counterpart tributary group. The 26 stations can be grouped into three main clusters; (1) the main river and its tributaries that have relatively good water quality, (2) the tributaries that have medium water quality, and (3) the tributaries nearby industrial sites that are heavily polluted.  相似文献

A four-reservoir hydroelectric complex which is projected on the Romaine River, in eastern Québec, Canada, will likely lead to the complete settling of the sand-size bed load of the river. In order to characterise the present river bed load sources, sediment transport and sedimentary connectivity, a study was conducted to document the compositional continuum of the lower 300 km portion of the river. Bed load samples were collected during the late summer low water period and ICP-MS geochemical analyses of the light and heavy mineral portions were conducted. Principal component analysis of the results successfully identified a series of distinctive geochemical domains. Multivariate Euclidean distance coefficients were also calculated between consecutive samples along the river revealing major bed load compositional breaks. These results indicate a longitudinal fractionation of the bed load along the 300 km course of the river. This is further supported by the sedimentary budget calculated from the annual sedimentary input derived from erosion rates of the river banks, from sediment bed load measurements at three gauging stations and from calculated bed load transport capacity at these three locations. It appears that significant sediment accommodation space is available on the upper course (250 km) of the Romaine River, in spite of the fact that this river has drained highly sediment-laden meltwaters from the receding Laurentide Ice Sheet, some 10 ka ago. This accommodation space leads to the renewal of the bed load due to recurrent partial to complete sedimentation. The major part of the bed load reaching the Romaine River mouth originates from the lower 50 km of the river course.  相似文献

The Pennask Creek watershed in British Columbia (BC), Canada has been contaminated with acid rock drainage (ARD) and associated metal leaching (ML) as a result of highway construction. By combining existing and newly gathered information, this study determined the extent of metal contamination of the water and sediments, the potential biological impacts of this contamination, the influence of local geology, and estimated the potential risk to aquatic organisms. Surface water and sediment samples from the watershed were analyzed for general chemical parameters and trace metals. Rock samples were analyzed for mineralogy and chemical composition. Metal concentrations in water and sediments downstream of the ARD/ML source were higher than elsewhere in the watershed. Metals of concern include aluminum (Al), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn). Analysis of historical water quality data indicated that the concentrations of these metals have decreased markedly since 2004, due to remediation efforts. Rock samples collected from the streambeds and banks were not found to be potentially acid generating, but did contain significant levels of metals. Al, Cu, and Zn levels consistently exceeded BC water and sediment quality guidelines for the protection of aquatic life, indicating that adverse biological effects are probable at stations downstream of the ARD/ML source. Benthic invertebrate monitoring over a 10-year period showed low abundance and diversity and a complete absence of sensitive taxa at downstream stations. Risk quotients indicated a likelihood of adverse biological effects for aquatic organisms, including rainbow trout, due to metal contamination in the watershed.  相似文献

The chemical dynamics at Meio Stream Basin, São Paulo State, Brazil were evaluated using major elements as natural tracers. The surface water samples from Meio Stream were collected near the mouth of Meio Stream at the confluence with the Mogi-Guaçu River on February 25, 2005, April 20, 2005, and July 8, 2005. Rainwater samples were collected (using a “bulk” collector) for 1 year at one sampling point located about 4 km from downtown Leme city and other possible sources of contamination. The analyses were performed by pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, total solids, sulfate, nitrate, phosphate, alkalinity, chloride, sodium, calcium, potassium, and magnesium. This basin has serious environmental problems in terms of rainwater and surface water quality, which result in the negative annual flux of cations and anions at Meio Stream Basin, with the exception of chlorine. The Meio Stream, downstream from Leme city, receives several elements/compounds through anthropogenic activities, mainly related to the discharge of domestic effluents. Anthropogenic inputs (mining, fossil fuel burning, and agricultural activities) are responsible for the higher concentrations of cations and anions in the rainwater from this basin.  相似文献

Water quality trends from 1970 to 2005 were defined along 30 Delaware streams in the Delaware and Chesapeake Bay watersheds in the USA. Water quality improved or was constant at 69% of stations since 1990 and at 80% of stations since 1970/1980. Dissolved oxygen (DO) improved or was constant at 73% of streams since 1990 and 32% of streams since 1970/1980. Total suspended sediment improved or was constant at 75% of streams since 1990 and 100% of streams since 1970/1980. Enterococcus bacteria improved or remained constant at 80% of streams since 1990 and 93% of streams since 1970/1980. Total Kjeldahl nitrogen improved or was constant at 48% of streams since 1990 and 100% of streams since 1970/1980. Total phosphorus improved or was constant at 66% of streams since 1990 and 85% of streams since 1970/1980. During 2001–2005, median levels were good or fair at 100% of the stations for DO, 78% for sediment, 50% for bacteria, 59% for nitrogen, and 56% for phosphorus. Good water quality correlates with high amounts of forest area (>25%) in Delaware watersheds. Since the Federal Clean Water Act Amendments of the 1970s, improving Delaware water quality stations (50) outnumbered degrading stations (23) by a 2:1 margin. Since 1990, degrading water quality stations (46) exceeded improving stations (38) mostly due to deteriorating nitrogen levels in half of Delaware streams, a reversal from early gains achieved since the 1970s. Over the last three and a half decades, watershed strategies have improved or preserved water quality along Delaware streams; however, greater emphasis is needed to curb recently resurging increases in nitrogen levels.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of monitoring the shallow groundwater quality around two municipal landfill sites in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Boreholes were installed at Dhahran and Juaymah sites upstream and downstream of the landfill. Twenty water samples were collected from each borehole and analyzed for various parameters mainly for BOD, COD, TOC, NH3-N, TKN, sulphate, chloride, hardness and metals. The result of the analysis of water samples from Dhahran boreholes shows an increase in the concentration of pollutants in downstream groundwater over that observed in upstream boreholes. The average concentration of BOD5, COD and TOC in the samples obtained from the downstream borehole was found to be 6.5, 23.5, and 34.3 mg L?1, respectively. On the other hand, the mean concentration of the same parameters in upstream monitoring wells was found to be less than 2.4, 11.5, and 10.0 mg L?1, respectively. The ammonia-N and organic-N in the downstream wells were 0.37 and 0.29 mg L?1, respectively, whereas, in upstream wells they were 0.11 and 0.15 mg L?1, respectively. At Juaymah, the average concentration of BOD and TOC in groundwater samples obtained from upstream boreholes were less than 3.0 and 7.2 mg L?1, respectively, while the concentration of the same parameters in downstream well samples were above 5.0 and 35.0 mg L?1, respectively. A similar trend of increment of ammonia-N, organic-N, phosphate, sulfate and metals in downstream samples was observed. Since the water from these shallow aquifers at both places is not being used for human consumptions or for any other commercial purpose, therefore, the minor increase in pollutants concentration at downstream level is not of a great concern.  相似文献

流域参考作物蒸发蒸腾量(ET0)插值方法的研究对流域尺度作物耗水时空变化规律有重要意义。该文通过海河流域162个国家农业气象站3a(2003-2005年)旬值气象资料,利用Penman-Monteith公式计算了这些站点ET0,采用ArcGIS软件中常用的Spline、IDW和Ordinary Kriging(OK)法,以及近些年研究较多的线性回归Regression插值法,对不同站点密度条件下的ET0进行空间插值。分析了各空间插值方法在不同站点密度条件下的优劣性,并且给出了本流域内各种站点密度范围条件下计算ET0最适宜的插值方法。结果表明以站点密度1.3个/万km2为界,当站点密度低于此密度时,推荐使用Regression插值法;当站点密度大于1.3个/万km2时,推荐使用IDW和OK插值法;当站点密度大于4.3个/万km2,以上三种插值法并无显著差别;不推荐使用Spline插值法。  相似文献

Long-term nutrient concentration trends and load variations at six monitoring stations on four canals in the Southern Indian River Lagoon (Florida, USA) were evaluated using the Estimate Trend (Estrend) and Load Estimator (Loadest) programs. The results of trend analysis on nutrient concentrations suggested that the nutrient trend patterns were spatially variable. Increasing trends were most often observed in orthophosphate and/or total phosphorus at five stations. Significantly increased annual loads were observed for orthophosphate at four stations from 1979 through 2004. The median concentrations of ammonia (0.05 to 0.10 mg l?1) were greater than the State of Florida surface water quality criteria of class III freshwater body for ammonia. The median concentrations of total phosphorus (138 to 376 μg l?1) were greater than the USEPA ambient water quality criteria recommendation for the study area (Nutrient Ecoregion XIII). Nutrient (phosphorus and nitrogen) loads observed in this study are likely to impair the water quality in the Southern Indian River Lagoon.  相似文献

Silver Bow Creek, a tributary of the Clark Fork River in southwest Montana, has been affected by metal mining and domestic wastes for over 100 yr. The invertebrate community was monitored at five stations from 1972 through 1983 to determine both the longitudinal and temporal patterns of recovery following major improvements in mine wastewater treatment. This treatment dramatically reduced metal concentrations in the mine discharge. Despite markedly improved water quality, no invertebrates were collected in Silver Bow Creek until 1975, when small numbers of invertebrates (primarily chironomids) were collected at the furthest downstream stations. A few invertebrates (<75 m?2) were collected for the first time at Stations 1 and 2 in 1981, although the lower stations still had much greater densities (> 1600 m?2). The earliest colonizers at each station were chironomids, empidids, and oligochaetes. In 1982, 10 yr after initiation of improved water quality, aquatic insect populations were over 1800 m?2 at all five stations. Populations dropped in 1983, but upper and lower stations had comparable densities suggesting that the stream is responding to a common stress such as high snowmelt runoff. The relatively long recovery time is partially attributed to the lack of an undisturbed headwater source of colonizers.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to integrate hydrochemical and biological data in order to obtain a picture of the water quality along the River Lambro, considered to be one of the most polluted rivers in Italy. Biological sampling with artificial substrates was undertaken in February and May 1991 together with water sampling. Significant longitudinal variations between stations 1 and 2 were observed for temperature, conductivity and dissolved oxygen. Station 3 (Villanterio), situated on the southern tributary, showed a higher degree of pollution than the stations along the main course of the Lambro. E.B.I, and B.M.W.P. score gave a similar picture. A multivariate analysis (CCA) of the taxonomical and chemical data showed the greater influence of the environmental parameters conductivity and D.O. on the macroinvertebrate community structure. All the methods confirmed the strong impact of the Milan area on the river; two different environmental situations could be distinguished on the basis of characteristical groups of taxa. The artificial substrates combined with multivariate analysis proved to be a useful combination in the study of this river.  相似文献

Background, Aim and Scope  Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have gained serious attention in the scientific community due to their persistence and toxic potential in the environment. PAHs may pose a risk to ecosystem health. Along the Mosel River/Germany, a tributary of the river Rhine, PAHs were found at significantly high concentrations (> 20 mg kg−1, German national guideline value Z2, LAGA 1998). These high concentrations were detected during the construction of a storm water retention basin, in which the contaminated soils had to be removed and treated as hazardous waste. This resulted in higher construction costs for implementing flood prevention measures, but did not address the origin of these PAHs and its distribution along Mosel River. Hence, for future flood prevention projects, it is necessary to estimate the extent of PAH contamination along the Mosel River. The aim of the study is to determine the extent of PAH contamination in soils collected along Mosel and Saar River, and to obtain a first insight into the origin of the PAH contamination in this region. Materials and Methods  In total twenty seven sample sites were investigated. Forty two single samples were collected along a 167 km distance of Mosel River and six samples were collected along a 20 km distance of Saar River. Soil samples were collected at a depth of 0 to 2 m with a stainless steel corer (▫ 8 cm). Each 2 m sample was further separated into two sub-samples (0–1 m and 1–2 m). The sixteen EPA PAHs and three additional PAHs (1methylnaphthalene, 2methylnaphthalene and perylene) were analysed with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). For soil characterisation, total organic carbon (TOC), grain size, microscope and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were performed. Results  Grain size for all soil samples was classified as a mixture of sand and silt. XRD analysis showed that all samples were dominated by quartz. Some clay minerals, such as illite and montmorillonite and feldspars, i.e. anorthoclase and orthoclase, were found in minor quantities. TOC ranged from 0.1% to 13%. Microscope analysis showed black coal particles in the majority of the soils collected from the Saar River and part of the Mosel River (downstream of the confluence of Saar and Mosel River). The black particles were not found further upstream along Mosel River. The sum of nineteen PAHs in the soil samples was up to 81 mg kg−1 dry weight (dw). Most soil samples showed a relationship between the presence of coal particles and PAH concentrations. Discussion  Elevated PAH concentrations were found in all soil samples collected from Saar River and downstream Mosel River. Due to former coal mining activities in the Saarland, Germany, there is a strong evidence that the majority of the PAH contamination in the soils downstream Mosel River are linked to these mining activities. Upstream Mosel River coal particles were hardly found although PAH concentrations were high. Therefore another PAH source has to be responsible for these concentrations. PAH distribution patterns indicate a pyrogenic PAH input upstream Mosel River and a mixed input (petrogenic and pyrogenic) downstream Mosel River. Conclusions  Due to PAH distribution patterns, the contamination along the upstream of the Mosel River is probably linked to atmospheric depositions and other sources not linked to coal mining activities. Downstream Mosel River the PAH distribution patterns reflect former coal mining activities. We could corroborate for the first time that coal mining resulted in a serious problem of an extensive PAH contamination at Saar and Mosel River floodplain soils. Recommendations and Perspectives  Coal mining activities have a strong impact on the neighbouring regions (Johnson and Bustin 2006, Short et al. 1999, Stout et al. 2002). It is known that coals exhibit relative high PAH concentrations, especially in the low molecular weight PAHs (Chapman et al. 1996, Radke et al. 1990). However, PAHs in coals are hardly bioavailable (Chapman et al. 1996) and hence may have less adverse effects on exposed biota. They can act as sink for other hydrophobic contaminants. For the assessment of the environmental impact, a detailed study of the sorption and desorption behaviour of PAHs linked to coal particles should be carried out. Daily average SO2 concentrations were measured during August 1999–September 2000 period in the mountains around Izmir. Sampling devices to collect integrated daily SO2 samples were located at four different sites. These sites were Yamanlar Mountain in the north, Tekketepe height of Karabelen Mountain in the south, and two mountain villages (Kiziluzum and Bespinar) located east of Izmir. Samples were analyzed by using standard methods. Maximum daily SO2 concentrations up to 433 μg m-3 were found with the average values ranging between 75–135 μg m-3 per day at the four mountain stations. Annual mean values were above the threshold levels acceptable for the health of trees. It is concluded that such high SO2 pollution might have caused the noted decline in the forests.In order to decide the sources of such high levels of pollution on the forested mountains, trajectory analyses were carried out. Results obtained at Tekketepe station are given in this article and they point to the fractional contributions of dense industrial areas around Izmir, to the forested heights of Tekketepe. Local topography and location of industrial zones around the city are seen to have a strong effect on the deteriorated air quality over the mountains. The annual and seasonal averages and ten maximum daily measurements at the Tekketepe sampling site indicate that the highest contribution to the deterioration of air quality is associated with the northerly wind sectors.  相似文献

It is well documented that synthetic chlorinated hydrocarbon residues are widespread through the oceanic ecosystem. The Adriatic Sea, as semi-enclosed body of water, is of special interest for an evaluation of the entry, extent and fate of the pollution by chlorinated hydrocarbons. Sediments samples were collected from 1976 to 1990 at seven areas and over forty stations located on the eastern Yugoslav coastal waters. Concentrations of chlorinated insecticides and polychlorinated biphenyls in surface sediment samples ranged from <0.1 to 93.9 for DDTs and from <0.5 to 294 μg kg?1 for PCBs on dry weight basis. It is very important to stress that all these samples were analyzed from a single analytical group (mostly by the same analyst), using a uniform methodology. Total DDT and PCB concentration do not exhibit Gausian distribution in the investigated area and collecting period, so it is necessary to be very careful in interpreting the concentration data using parametric statistics. Very often, the pollutant levels in sediment samples differ significantly in samples collected at the same time at nearby stations.  相似文献

In order to assess the extent of sediment connectivity between uplands and lowlands and to quantify the processes of in-channel deposition and remobilization, measurements of suspended sediment fluxes were conducted in a nested rural catchment of the Mexican Volcanic Belt. Data were collected over one year at three upland sites (3 to 12 km2) and two downstream stations (390–630 km2). Our results show that a structural discontinuity in the catchment (i.e. abrupt slope decrease at the junction between piedmonts and the alluvial plain from 2 to 10% to < 0.1%) could be compensated by functional continuity during floods. Direct conveyance of fine sediment to the outlet occurred when a high stream transport capacity was reached. Erosion of the streambed was observed on various occasions and accounted for up to 50% of the flux leaving the catchment during one event. Conversely, temporary in-channel storage was apparent on other occasions, amounting to up to 52% of the flux recorded upstream during one storm. These two distinct behaviours were approximately equally distributed along the rainy season and strongly driven by the extent of coupling between surface and subsurface water. This work indeed highlights the role of baseflow spatial variations in determining the extent of lowland sediment conveyance. Riverbed erosional processes occurred when large differences in pre-event baseflow values (i.e. at least a twofold longitudinal increase) were observed between the 5-km distant lowland stations. Our findings outline the importance of systematically taking into consideration the baseflow parameter in research focusing on fine sediment transport across scales.  相似文献

We examined the influence of a forested landscape on the quality of water in a stream originating on an urban landscape and flowing through National Forest lands. Sample sites included an urban stream (URB), a site on the same stream but within a National Forest (FOR) and 2 km downstream from the URB site, and a small, undisturbed, forested reference tributary of the main stream (REF). We monitored stream water quality from March 2002 through June 2003. Average base flows for the three stream sites were URB = 184 L s?1, FOR = 420 L s?1, and REF = 17 L s?1. We analyzed weekly stream water samples for NO3 ?, NH4 +, PO4 +, Cl?, K, Ca, Mg, SO4, SiO2, pH, conductivity, total suspended solids (TSS), and bacteria on a monthly basis. Most solutes were higher in concentration at the URB site, as were conductivity, TSS, and bacteria counts. Reductions in NO3 ?, NH4 +, and PO4 + concentrations between the URB and FOR sites were inferred from changes in nutrient:chloride ratios. Bacteria populations were greater and more responsive to stream temperature at the URB site. Water quality responses to changes in stream discharge varied among sites but were greater at the URB site. By all measures, water quality was consistently higher at the FOR site than at the URB site.  相似文献

A study on contamination levels by organochlorinated compounds (pesticides and PCBs) and heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn) in Doñana National Park (Spain) area and its surrounding region has been carried out. Residue levels of xenobiotics were determined in water and soils samples from seventeen sites selected through the park and nearest surrounding farm lands affecting to the inner Park. Also we analyzed some stations along the Guadiamar Basin in the north of Doñana region to determined the movement and influence of one mine situated over 40 km away, in Aznalcóllar, where the commercial expoitation of pyrites ores rich in Zn, Pb and Cu is being operated.  相似文献
