Analysis of 12 permanent sample plots established in the Galápagos showed that introduced mammals have had a destructive influence on the vegetation; closed forest and scrub have been changed into open vegetation. The plots provide information on the regeneration ability of various types of vegetation. Scalesia forest, dominated by the endemic Scalesia pedunculata Hook. f., might under certain circumstances regenerate rapidly. Miconia scrub, dominated by the endemic Miconia robinsoniana Cogn., regenerates slowly and is consequently more vulnerable to the activities of man and introduced mammals. Arid zone vegetation, characterised especially by endemic species of Opuntia, is able to regenerate, but it is still too early to estimate how the regeneration will proceed. The suggested conservation measures include a continuation of the programme for elimination or control of introduced mammals, and a stronger control with the National Park areas on inhabited islands. Financial support is needed for the Galápagos National Park Service and the Charles Darwin Research Station to continue and enlarge the activities necessary to preserve the unique wildlife of the Galápagos Islands.  相似文献

One of the most serious environmental problems is the current acceleration in the rate of species extinction associated with human activities, which is occurring particularly rapidly in freshwaters. Here we examine whether endemic water beetles are effectively protected by existing conservation measures in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, a region of high diversity and intense human pressure. We used an exhaustive database for aquatic beetles in the region to address such issues. Firstly, we identify the most threatened endemic taxa using a categorization system to rank species according to their conservation priority or vulnerability. Of the 120 endemic species of water beetles used in the analysis, only two (Ochthebius ferroi and Ochthebius javieri) were identified as being extremely vulnerable, 71 were highly vulnerable and 46 moderately vulnerable, with only a single species identified as having low vulnerability status. Since no Iberian species of aquatic Coleoptera has legal protection, the only conservation measure available for these species is the extent to which they occur in protected areas. Here we identify distributional hotspots for threatened endemic species, and evaluate the extent to which these are already included in the Natura 2000 network in Spain and Portugal. Despite a high degree of concordance between hotspots and Natura 2000 sites, the distribution of four species falls completely outside the network. The analysis also reveals that Natura 2000 fails to protect saline water bodies, despite their high conservation interest and narrow global distribution. The picture revealed here with water beetles is likely to be similar for others groups of freshwater macroinvertebrates, since Coleoptera are known to be good surrogates of aquatic biodiversity in the region. Finally, the degree of protection provided via Natura 2000, and the utility of red lists are discussed.  相似文献

We studied the effects of herbivores on populations of four endemic legume species in pine forests in Caldera de Taburiente National Park on La Palma, Canary Islands. Seeds of these species were sown in control and herbivore-exclusion plots. Over the subsequent 4-years period, we assessed the effects of herbivores by counting the number of individual plants that emerged and by following their growth. We assessed growth over time using three plant-size categories. For these four species, we conclude that the presence of herbivores, including barbary sheep (Ammotraguslervia), goat (Caprahircus) and European rabbit (Oryctolaguscuniculus), exerts a strong negative effect on plant establishment. We suggest that the paucity of understory plant species in the pine forests of the Canary Islands may be strongly correlated with the presence of introduced herbivores in this region. We propose urgent conservation measures, such as large fenced areas, control activities and the most effective measure, eradication.  相似文献

Changes in the vegetation and populations of introduced mammals on two Mauritian Islands, Round Island and Gunner's Quoin, are described using the results from expeditions in 1975 and 1982. Particular emphasis was placed on monitoring populations of the endemic palms (Palmae) and an endemic screwpine (Pandanus) which constitute the last remnant of native palm savanna in Mauritius. The vegetation of Gunner's Quoin has been greatly modified by introduced plants, rats and hares, and, possibly, also by fire with the result that this island no longer supports a viable palm savanna ecosystem. Round Island has been degraded by introduced rabbits and goats, erosion and, possibly, the burrowing activities of shearwaters. Recent reductions in the populations of rabbits and goats have allowed recovery of the ground vegetation and regeneration of palms but some important species are now very rare, and require artificial propagation and reintroduction. For this to be successful, continual reduction, or preferably eradication, of rabbits is essential.  相似文献

A wide variety of cultivated plants has been introduced to the Galápagos Islands since settlements were first established there in the 1830s. Through poor management, many of these plants have escaped to the wild and are taking over extensive areas of native forest. Two endemic species, Scalesia pedunculata Hook.f. and Miconia robinsoniana Cogn., are especially endangered by farming practices. Some measures for the control and use of cultivated plants must be enforced to save the Galápagos flora from further damage.  相似文献

The Balearic shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus is one of the most critically endangered seabirds in the world. The species is endemic to the Balearic archipelago, and conservation concerns are the low number of breeding pairs, the low adult survival, and the possible hybridization with a sibling species, the morphologically smaller Yelkouan shearwater (P. yelkouan). We sampled almost the entire breeding range of the species and analyzed the genetic variation at two mitochondrial DNA regions. No genetic evidence of population decline was found. Despite the observed philopatry, we detected a weak population structure mainly due to connectivity among colonies higher than expected, but also to a Pleistocene demographic expansion. Some colonies showed a high imbalance between immigration and emigration rates, suggesting spatial heterogeneity in patch quality. Genetic evidence of maternal introgression from the sibling species was reinforced, but almost only in a peripheral colony and not followed, at least to date, by the spread of the introgressed mtDNA lineages. Morphometric differences were not correlated with mtDNA haplotypes and introgression is probably due to a secondary contact between the two species several generations ago. Overall, results suggested that the very recent demographic decline in this critically endangered species has not yet decreased its genetic variability, and connectivity found among most colonies should help to reduce species extinction risk. Spreading of introgression should be monitored, but the species is not jeopardized at the moment by genetic factors and the major conservation actions should concentrate at enhancing adult survival.  相似文献

The Knersvlakte in the Succulent Karoo Biome (South Africa) is known for its high plant diversity and endemism. In the course of establishing a conservation area there, we assessed baseline data for future management. We investigated the effects of grazing on the vegetation in terms of species diversity and composition as well as reproduction of selected species. Data were sampled on four adjacent farms, which were ungrazed, moderately or intensively grazed by sheep and goats. The data were collected in 27 quartz and 24 non-quartz plots, representing two major habitat types of the region. Within each of the 1000-m2 plots, 100 subplots of 400 cm2 size were sampled. ANOVAs revealed that species richness and abundance of endemic species on quartz fields decreased with grazing. Abundance of annuals did not increase significantly due to grazing. Fidelity analyses indicated that species composition differed between grazing intensities and that the ungrazed and moderately grazed plots both contained unique locally endemic habitat specialists. Reproduction of two endemic dwarf shrubs Drosanthemumschoenlandianum and Argyrodermafissum (both Aizoaceae) increased under moderate grazing, which in the case of D.schoenlandianum was interpreted as an effect of grazing. We attribute the low number of seedlings and annuals on the moderately grazed farm to lower seasonal rainfall on these plots. From a conservation perspective, no or moderate grazing appear to be necessary to preserve plant diversity and vegetation patterns, and their underlying processes.  相似文献

How introduced reptiles cause the loss of endemic reptiles is poorly understood and currently there are no available techniques for dealing with this major conservation issue. We addressed both these problems by investigating the role of the introduced house gecko Hemidactylus frenatus in causing the catastrophic decline and extinction of the endemic night gecko Nactus populations of the Mascarene Islands and how this introduced species can be excluded from habitats on the basis of morphology. Competition for enemy free space was tested in experimental enclosures and showed that H. frenatus displace the endemic Nactus coindemirensis and Nactus durrelli from favoured positions close to and from refugia, thus increasing the risk of predation and exposure to stochastic events. The ability of H. frenatus to grip substrates with their pad-bearing toes was examined, and we demonstrated that naturally occurring substrates with a greater amount of loose surface material of a higher particulate concentration and size excludes H. frenatus, but not Nactus. These findings support the hypothesis that H. frenatus led to the fragmentation and extinction of the endemic Nactus populations and demonstrate that artificial refugia made of a crumbly substrate may be used to limit future disturbances by this gecko and others like it in the Mascarene Islands and elsewhere.  相似文献

Tomàtiga de Ramellet (Ramellet) is a traditional long-storage tomato from the Mediterranean Islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa (Ibiza), and Formentera (Balearic Islands). To investigate the observed phenotypic and shelf life variability within local varieties, we studied 142 accessions characterized as Ramellet varieties, and 29 accessions representing other local varieties. The 171 accessions constitute a new germplasm collection at the University of Balearic Islands (UIB). The evaluation of the collection demonstrated wide variability in most agronomic, morphological and quality traits of Ramellet accessions and clearly differentiates them from other local varieties with respect to fruit shape, size, fruit composition, and fruit storage. All accessions of Ramellet evaluated have the ripening mutation alcobaça (alc), suggesting an important role for this variant in controlling shelf life. Results of evaluation also showed wide variability between the Ramellet accessions for storage time, suggesting that other traits like fruit size and composition may play a role in fruit conservation. Observed variation within the Ramellet accessions is consistent with a genetically variable population or landrace group. The establishment of this collection will help prevent genetic erosion of this local landrace group and constitute a resource for future investigation and breeding.  相似文献

Both disturbance history and previous land use influence present-day vegetation and soils. These influences can have important implications for conservation of plant communities if former disturbance and land use change species abundances, increase colonization of nonnative plant species or if they alter soil characteristics in ways that make them less suitable for species of conservation interest. We compared the plant species composition, the proportion of native and nonnative plant species, and soil biogeochemical characteristics across seven dominant land use and vegetation cover types on the outwash sandplain of Martha’s Vineyard that differed in previous soil tillage, dominant overstory vegetation and history of recent prescribed fire. The outwash sandplain supports many native plant species adapted to dry, low nutrient conditions and maintenance of native species is a management concern. There was broad overlap in the plant species composition among pine (Pinus resinosa, P. strobus) plantations on untilled soils, pine plantations on formerly tilled soils, scrub oak (Quercus ilicifolia) shrublands, tree oak (Q. velutina, Q. alba) woodlands, burned tree oak woodlands, and sandplain grasslands. All of these land cover categories contained few nonnative species. In contrast, agricultural grasslands had high richness and cover of nonnative plants. Soil characteristics were also similar among all of the woodland, shrubland and grassland land cover categories, but soils in agricultural grasslands had higher pH, extractable Ca2+ and Mg2+ in mineral soils and higher rates of net nitrification. The similarity of soils and significant overlap in vegetation across pine plantations, scrub oak shrublands, oak woodlands and sandplain grasslands suggests that the history of land use, current vegetation and soil characteristics do not pose a major barrier to management strategies that would involve conversion among any of these vegetation types. The current presence of high cover of nonnative species and nutrient-enriched soils in agricultural grasslands, however, may pose a barrier to expansion of sandplain grasslands or shrublands on these former agricultural lands if native species are not able to outcompete nonnative species in these anthropogenically-enriched sites.  相似文献

The available information on the ten species of endemic vascular plants recorded from Ascension Island (including Oldenlandia adscensionis (DC.) Cronk and Xiphopteris ascensionense (Hieron.) Cronk for which new combinations are proposed) is summarised. The present state of the population is given for each species, reasons for extinction or survival are suggested and the need for conservation is discussed. When the island was discovered it was almost barren with only about 25 indigenous vascular plants. The rubiaceous shrub Oldenlandia adscensionis has become extinct and three other species are possibly extinct. The rest were observed in 1976. The main cause of this extinction is the introduction of alien plants which is now irreversible. It is therefore probable that further extinction will follow.  相似文献

Summary Several expeditions were made to the greater part of Peninsular Spain and the Balearic Islands, in order to collect samples from populations ofAegilops spp. The result has been the compilation of a collection reflecting both the presence and the distribution of the genus in Spain. The localisation and collection of two populations ofAe. cylindrica is particularly noteworthy.Ae. ovata is found all over the Peninsula except in the north and northwest of the country. It extends also to the Balearic Islands, which lie within the same biogeographical region.Ae. triuncialis also has a widespread distribution though smaller than that ofAe. ovata. In the Balearic Islands it is found only in Mallorca. All other species were found in more localised areas.Ae. neglecta was found in regions of W and SW Spain with the limits of its distribution bordering those ofAe. biuncialis, which is found in central Spain and in the South.  相似文献

Many chameleon species are thought to be restricted to primary rainforest where they are threatened by the continued fragmentation and degradation of natural vegetation. We surveyed chameleon abundance in forest subject to high disturbance, low disturbance and in a riparian zone in Madagascar. Four Calumma species and Brookesia thieli were present in all habitats, but B. minima was not recorded from the high-disturbance forest. Chameleons were more abundant in rainforest subject to low-disturbance (e.g. selective timber extraction) than in patches of high-disturbance forest that was recovering from burning. Riparian zones within low-disturbance forest provided linear patches of high chameleon abundance and are therefore an important conservation resource because they also protect a range of other endemic and threatened species. Carefully designed management plans are needed to conserve biodiversity and allow the sustainable use of forest products by people in Madagascar.  相似文献

Initiatives that establish species rarity as an indicator of conservation priority might be biased if they disregard important evolutionary and adaptive processes taking place in lower diversity communities and ecotones. Conservation policies regarding the Atlantic forest strongly emphasize the core formation (i.e. the rainforest stricto sensu) rather than the marginal habitats (e.g. restingas, swamps, and high altitude campos) and species that are rare/endemic. To discuss this issue I revisit a hypothesis I have forwarded in 2002 that postulates that plant colonization of habitats marginal to the Atlantic rain forests of the State of Rio de Janeiro was largely related to terrestrial nurse plants that originally, in the rainforest habitat, were canopy plants such as epiphytes or hemi-epiphytes. Adaptations to water and nutrient restrictions, typical of life in the canopy, granted success to such plants upon migration to sandy, swampy or rocky substrates in neighbouring areas. Many such species, then, behaved as nurse plants and favoured colonization of these more extreme habitats by a number of other rainforest species. I now review recent evidence that corroborate this hypothesis, while examining the nature of such nurse plants. In all marginal habitats, nurse plants are often highly abundant locally and have high ecophysiological vigour, while both widespread and endemic species are found among them. Thus, nursing effect, local abundance, and ecophysiological performance are not related to species geographic distribution or to their spectrum of habitat preference. Paradoxically, several abundant nurse plant species have low Darwinian fitness. These studies provoke two reflections. First, the Atlantic forest sensu lato, i.e. the core formation plus the peripheral ones, should be treated collectively as a biodiversity hotspot, rather than the core rainforest formation alone. Second, widespread or common species play important functional roles in such marginal habitats and, despite their ubiquity, ecologically they might be less fit than rare/endemic ones at the local level due, for instance, to current constraints to sexual reproduction. Thus, they should also be targeted as conservation priorities.  相似文献

Collection of plants and seeds from wild populations threatens a large number of cycad species. We investigated to what extent individual life history stages contribute to population growth (λ) and compared two species with major differences in life histories in the African genus Encephalartos: Encephalartos cycadifolius, a highly persistent grassland species that resprouts after fire, and Encephalartos villosus, a relatively fast growing, non-sprouting forest species. Several harvesting scenarios impacting different sized individuals were simulated to determine the sensitivity of the two functional types to harvesting. In both species λ was most sensitive to changes in abundance of adult plants. The harvesting of seeds had minimal impact on population growth rates, whereas harvesting of adult plants led to rapid population decline. This response from two very different functional types suggests that the conservation of adult plants is critical for all cycad species. Despite similar responses to adult mortality, the two species had substantially different population growth rates. This determined recovery time after harvesting of adult individuals. Encephalartos cycadifolius is typical of highly persistent plant species associated with low levels of recruitment and unable to recover from even small losses of adults within a reasonable conservation time frame (<100 years). Our results suggest that the ability to recover from loss of individuals is an important factor that should be considered when assessing the vulnerability of wild populations to threats.  相似文献

The fish fauna of mountain streams in the Jiri (440 km2) and Seorak (373 km2) National Park areas of South Korea was investigated from September 1998 to May 2001. A total of 5979 fish were collected and classified into 22 families and 60 species from both national parks. At Jiri, 30 species in 12 families of fishes were collected, while at Seorak there were 42 species in 17 families. Zacco temmincki [relative abundance (RA) 47.9%] was dominant at both parks. Subdominant species were Rhynchocypris kumkangensis (RA 10.8%), Zacco platypus (RA 9.4%), and Pungtungia herzi (RA 5.3%). A total of 20 species were found to be Korean endemic species, representing seven families. The relative abundance of Korean endemic species was higher at Seorak (30.5%) than Jiri (18.5%). One exotic species (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and two species translocated outside their native catchments (Hypomesus nipponensis and Coreoperca herzi) were collected. The proportion of Korean endemic freshwater fish species in both parks (33.3%) was higher than the overall proportion on the Korean peninsula (23.6%). Within the 14 South Korean mountain-area national parks as a whole, larger parks tend to have higher fish diversity. We conclude that South Korean national parks are important for conservation of the regional fish fauna, especially for endemic and endangered species. Current threats to conservation of fishes within South Korean national parks are identified and management solutions are suggested.  相似文献

Regional-scale biodiversity indicators provide important criteria for the selection of protected areas in conservation, but their application is often hindered by a lack of taxonomic knowledge. Moreover, different indicators include different types of information, sometimes leading to divergent conservation priorities. Madagascar tops the world list of biodiversity hotspots and much conservation effort has been directed toward its threatened plants and vertebrates. In contrast, its highly diverse freshwater invertebrate fauna has received comparatively little conservation attention. We conducted an inventory of Malagasy adephagan water beetles (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae, Noteridae, Gyrinidae, Haliplidae) using a combined morphological and molecular approach. In total, 2043 beetles from 153 sites were sequenced for cytochrome oxidase subunit I (cox1), and species delimitation was carried out using the coalescent-based GMYC model. Phylogenetic relationships of the resulting entities were established using cox1 combined with partial 16S rRNA and 28S rRNA sequences. Ten national parks were assessed for their species richness, phylogenetic diversity (PD) and endemism. We were particularly interested in the contribution of endemic species to PD. Congruence between molecular and taxonomic identifications was high (91%), with 69% of sampled species endemic to Madagascar. Interestingly, we found that PD at a site was negatively correlated to the proportion of endemic species, most likely because endemics are the result of recent radiations with relatively little branch-length contribution to the measure of PD. This suggests that ranking sites for conservation priority based solely on PD potentially disfavor endemic species by underrating areas where the evolutionary process is most active.  相似文献

Purpose

Endogeic earthworms play a significant role in biogeochemical cycles due to the large amount of soil they ingest, and because after transit through their guts, casts usually show differences in nutrient contents and microbial populations with bulk soil. Here, we studied how three endogeic earthworm species, Postandrilus majorcanus, Postandrilus sapkarevi and Postandrilus palmensis, inhabiting soils in Majorca island (Balearic Islands, W Mediterranean), modify nutrient pools and microbial communities of soil.

Materials and methods

To do this, we analysed C, N and P pools, microbial biomass (phospholipid fatty acids, PLFA) and microbial activity (fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis, FDA) in paired samples of bulk soil and fresh casts.

Results and discussion

The mineral and organic N contents were generally enhanced in casts produced by all three earthworm species. However, inorganic P and organic C contents were only higher in P. sapkarevi (32 %, only P) and P. majorcanus casts (100 % for both soil nutrient pools) than in bulk soil. Bacterial and fungal biomass were only higher than in bulk soil in P. majorcanus casts (65 and 100 %, respectively), but without effects on microbial activity, that was lower in P. palmensis casts (26 %). Earthworm gut transit strongly influenced the soil microbial community structure, resulting in differences between casts and soils.

Conclusions

The increased nutrient mineralization (6-, 1.3- and 1.4-fold for N, C and P, respectively) in casts produced by these earthworm species is of particular importance because of the amount of casts released and the seasonal variations in earthworm activity, which may favour plant growth.  相似文献

This paper describes a field trial of two rapid-survey methods of classifying vegetation for conservation purposes. The work was carried out by staff and students of the Conservation Course at University College, London, on Majorca in the spring of 1971. A brief review of the two methods is followed by an account of the difficulties encountered with their use in the field and of their theoretical advantages and disadvantages. It was concluded that both methods offer a quick, repeatable approach to vegetation classification which requires little previous knowledge. Fosberg's method was considered the more logical because Ellenberg's includes habitat data which may lead to circularity of argument. Ellenberg's was found to be the easier to use in the field, but this is possibly because it has been principally developed in temperate regions. Both methods offer a very useful framework for an ecological inventory of an area but are subject to practical difficulties when the vegetation has to be mapped.  相似文献
