The effects of limestone (2.0 and 4.0 Mg ha−1) on chemical properties of soil, nutrient concentrations of needles and growth of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) transplants were investigated on three reforestation areas on infertile acidic sites in southern Finland. The limestone was applied either on the soil surface (unploughed plots) or was mixed into the topsoil (ploughed plots). All the treatments were replicated four times. Surface broadcast of lime elevated the pH in the organic layer and in the 0-10 cm layer of mineral soil. The increase in the pH of the organic layer after 21 years was, on average, 0.7 and 1.1 pH units, with a dose of lime 2 and 4 Mg ha−1, respectively. On the ploughed plots, the pH in the uppermost 0-10 cm soil layer was 0.4-0.5 units higher than on the corresponding unlimed plots. Both doses of lime significantly increased the amount of exchangeable Ca and the base saturation (BS) in the topsoil on the ploughed plots, and the amount of exchangeable Ca and Mg, as well as the base saturation (BS) in the organic layer + the 0-10 cm layer of mineral soil on the unploughed plots. Regardless of the techniques used for application of lime, after 21 growing seasons the Ca and Mg concentrations in needles were significantly higher on the limed plots than on the controls. In needles, the Ca/Mn ratio was the best indicator for measuring the response to liming. Only on the unploughed plots did liming increase stand volume and dominant diameter of pines. Intensive disc ploughing produced significantly more stems and increased both stand volume and the dominant height of pines compared to unploughed plots.  相似文献

Afforestation is economically and ecologically important for protecting land and improving soil quality. This study evaluates how soil basal respiration, physicochemical and microbiological characteristics are affected by parent material variety in afforesting degraded areas. For this, some soil physical and chemical parameters, microbial respiration (MR), soil microbial biomass carbon and microbial indexes (Cmic/Corg and MR/Cmic) were determined. The results showed that the physical, chemical and microbiological properties of the soil formed from limestone were better than those of the basaltic-andesite soil. An independent samples t-test demonstrated that the afforested area on the limestone parent material had significantly higher microbial biomass C than the basaltic-andesite parent material. The microbial quotient (Cmic/Corg) of the limestone soil was positively affected by afforestation. In addition, the highest basal respiration value (1.01?±?0.33 CO2–C 10?2?µg?g?1?h?1) was observed for the limestone at the topsoil. The lowest metabolic quotient values were determined for the basaltic-andesite parent material on both topsoil and subsoil (1.99 and 1.42?μg CO2-C mg Cmic?1 h?1, respectively). This study revealed the importance of determining the parent material and its soil characteristics for successfully managing forest applications in degraded areas. Limestone soil sequesters more carbon and promotes microbial activities with a higher Cmic/Corg than the basaltic-andesite soil. Furthermore, the microbial quotient remained low during the 10 years in which the forest was in its sapling stage.  相似文献

We have evaluated the effects of improving substrate fertility on the growth and reproduction of a P. halepensis plantation in a restored limestone quarry on a stony calcareous regolith (R plots). The natural substrate was supplemented by adding a 0.2 m layer of a fine textured soil (RS plots) or a sewage sludge amended soil (RSS plots). The treatments were performed when the pines were 7 years old, and tree growth (height and trunk and canopy diameter) was monitored over the subsequent 12 years. The reproductive status of the trees was also measured when the pines were 20 years old. Tree growth was proportional to the amount of soil nutrients: 12 years after treatment the mean height of the R, RS and RSS trees was 1.5, 3.1 and 6.2 m respectively and growth increases over the baseline were 76, 264 and 632%. The treatment also affected the age of onset of reproduction (15, 11 and 9 years, respectively), the average number of cones per tree (12, 43 and 61), and the amount of seeds per cone (37, 52 and 72), but did not modify the germination percentage of pine seeds (ca 71.5%). Soil organic carbon increased proportionally to the vegetation development, contributing to carbon sequestration. These results suggest that improving the nutritional status of the soil not only improves the growth of trees, but it also ameliorates their reproductive ability (earlier reproduction onset and larger seed crop size). Implications for soil restoration through afforestation are also discussed.  相似文献

Growth responses of mesquite (Prosopis juliflora (SW) DC.) during establishment stage to planting methods and amendments were studied in a highly alkali soil (Aquic Natrustalf, ESP 94), at the experimental farm of the Central Soil Salinity Research Institute, Karnal in July, 1984. Six combinations of planting methods and amendments with and without Karnal grass (Diplachne fusca Linn. P Beauv) in the inter-row space were compared in a four times replicated field experiment in randomised block design. The mean plant height (MPH), diameter at stump height (DSH), diameter at breast height (DBH), lopped biomass 16 months past planting and total biomass attained in 2 years period were significantly less when inter-row space was planted with Karnal grass. The MPH (cm), DSH and DBH (mm) attained in 2 years period were 319, 43.4 and 15.1 in with grass as compared to 405, 53.4 and 20.3 in without grass treatments. Similarly, the total biomass attained in 2 years was about 3 times more where inter-row space was not planted with grass. Growth was better when mesquite was planted by auger hole and pit methods than in trench plantation, when the original soil was treated with gypsum at 3 kg plant–1 and then refilled. However, using trenches of dimensions 30 × 30 cm and filled with a mixture of original soil, 3 kg gypsum and 8 kg farm yard manure plant–1 appeared to be promising method for establishing mesquite plantations on highly deteriorated alkali soils. The effect of amendments on growth decreased in the order gypsum + FYM, gypsum + rice husk, gypsum, control. In two years period, 37 percent mesquite died in the trenches in which the original soil was left unchanged. Effect of treatments on nutrient concentrations and total accumulations in different segments of mesquite is discussed. Karnal grass gave 25.3 t ha–1 green forage yield in 8 cuts without amendment in a growth period of 26 months proving its great potential as a folder crop for the adverse sites. The inorganic chemical composition of the shoots, including trace elements Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu, is such as to make this species a highly promising plant for the exploitation of alkali soils. Growing Karnal grass with mesquite for a period of about 2 years reduced soil pH and EC significantly and improved organic carbon and available N contents. The grass improved water infiltration rates and moisture storage in the lower layers of the profile.  相似文献

对不同立地条件下油茶人工林的树高、地径及其土壤化学性质进行测定,并运用灰色关联分析方法探讨土壤化学性质对油茶高生长和地径生长的影响,综合评价油茶人工林土壤肥力状况。结果表明:9个样地中土壤肥力属于Ⅲ级(一般)的有5个,属于Ⅳ级(差)的有2个,属于Ⅴ级(极差)的有2个,说明9个油茶林地的土壤肥力普遍较低;而对油茶高生长影响最大的是土壤全K、全N和有效Zn,影响相对较小的是土壤有效P和交换性Ca;对油茶地径生长影响最大的是土壤有效Zn、全K和全N,影响相对较小的是土壤交换性Ca和pH值。  相似文献

Abstract

The effects of topographic features and the soil parent rock on the site index of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] were examined. Field data were collected on 347 plots located in the Polish West Carpathian. On these plots, the diameter at breast height and the height of trees were measured and the age of trees was determined. On 64 plots one dominant or codominant tree was felled for stem analysis. In addition, topographic features of each site were measured, including elevation above sea level, aspect and slope. Stem analysis data were used in the development of a local site index system, which was used for calculating the site index for particular plots. In order to interpret site index as functions of elevation, aspect, slope, size of a mountain massif and soil parent rock, the multiple regression model was used, which explained 79.0% of the variation in Norway spruce site index. Elevation above sea level was the major factor responsible for variation in site index, and was negatively correlated (R 2 adj=0.610) with site index. Site index also depended on the soil parent rock. The stands growing on the tertiary Magura sandstones had considerably higher site indices than those located on the geological substratum composed of Istebna and Godula sandstones formed during the Cretaceous period. The site index of Norway spruce is also determined by the aspect, slope and height of mountain massif.  相似文献

利用2002年广东省森林资源与生态状况综合监测评估体系的95个桉树林样地的调查资料研究了桉树林的土壤肥力。按《我国土壤质地暂行分类方案》将95个样地土壤合并为粉壤土、粘壤土、粗砂土、细砂土、面砂土、粉粘土、砂粘土、粘土、壤粘土。通过对土壤理化性质进行聚类分析,将土壤按质地类型划分为4类:第1类包括粉壤土、粉粘土和壤粘土,速效K含量较高,速效P含量中等,其余养分含量位居9种土壤的前列,容重和毛管孔隙中等,肥力较高;第2类是粘壤土,全K含量最高,速效N含量中等,其余养分含量较低,容重较小,毛管孔隙较大而非毛管孔隙中等,总体上肥力水平中等;第3类包括粗砂土、细砂土、面砂土和砂粘土,此类土大多数有机质、全N、全K、速效N、速效K含量低,而有的速效P含量较高,容重大、毛管孔隙小,总体来说肥力低;第4类为肥力高的粘土,其有机质、全N、全P、速效N、速效P含量均是9种土壤中最高的。  相似文献

The growth, technical quality and nutritional status of pure and mixed silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) and downy birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh.) plantations were studied 21 and 22 years after planting on afforested organic soil arable land and on upland forest soil. In mixtures, 50% of both birch species was planted. Silver birch trees grew better, but had higher mortality than downy birch trees on both sites. Mortality of both species was highest, and the difference in their growth smallest, on organic soil. In pure stands on organic soil, downy birch dominant height, diameter and mean volume were 96%, 92% and 82% of those of silver birch and on mineral soil 87%, 84% and 60%, correspondingly. On mineral soil, silver birch had a higher mean annual increment (MAI) (5.8 m3 ha?1a?1) than downy birch (3.9 m3 ha?1a?1), but on organic soil the MAI of both species was similar (3.3–3.4 m3 ha?1 a?1). Planting birches in mixture did not affect the growth of the trees on organic soil. On mineral soil, the mean diameter and mean volume of silver birch trees were higher in mixed than in pure plantations. The technical stem quality of both tree species was low. On mineral soils, pure silver birch is more productive than mixture, but on peat soil the higher growth of silver birch could contribute to increased productivity and downy birch would ensure sufficient survival for future timber production.  相似文献

Summary Spacing trials were established inPinus pinaster, in plantations in the Southern and South-Western Cape Province in South Africa. Eight spacings, with nominal initial stem numbers between 125 and 3000 were tested in each of the two trials, with a single replicate in each experiment. The Chapman-Richards growth model was applied to mean diameter, mean height and basal area/ha. For diameter and height, the assumption m=0 holds true, but for basal area/ha, this parameter is related to initial stem number. The volume growth of each sample plot was estimated from equations with basal area and mean height and their interaction as predictor-variables. The regression model also included constraints for basal area and height, to prevent anomalies for the estimated volume per hectare at young age. Each of the trials contained a number of plots, thinned after the onset of competition. The growth rates in these plots was statistically significantly greater than that of the same stand density in the unthinned plots.   相似文献

Forest liming is a common measure to counteract soil acidification. In forest practice, lime is applied to the forest floor where it changes the chemical properties. However, little is known about the depth impact of liming and the depth translocation of lime components. To investigate the long-term impact of forest liming, several study plots have been established in the 1980s in Germany in stands with different site conditions. We analysed soil chemical data obtained during the last 28?years from 45 of the study plots. We examined the depth impact of liming and predicted the main factors responsible for the increase in Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg) stocks after liming in the mineral soil using multiple linear regression analyses (MLR). Stocks of Ca and Mg as well as base saturation (BS) showed a strong depth gradient with significant differences between limed and control plots down to 40?cm of the mineral soil. About 65–70?% of applied Ca and Mg were recovered in the forest floor and the upper 40?cm of the mineral soil. BS in 0–40?cm increased by a mean of 11?%. MLR models could explain 48–74?% of the variation in mean changes of Ca and Mg in 0–10, 10–20 and 20–40?cm soil depth when soil and climate variables, amount of applied lime and years after liming are included in the model. After testing the model robustness with a cross-validating procedure, we concluded that these models might be applied to many regions in Central Europe with comparable soil and climate conditions and thus, have widespread application.  相似文献

A study was carried out within nine 11-year-old stands of Pinus radiata in two forests, to assess relationships between productivity and soil factors. Stand variables of stocking, dominant height, diameter, basal area and volume were assessed on a plot basis. For each stand, slope and elevation were also determined. Soil samples were collected and chemically analysed. Within the study area, there was high variation between soil parent materials and this was reflected in productivity. Mean merchantable volume for stands was significantly different between soil parent materials and ranged from 3 to 128 m3 ha?1. Soil parent material was found to be the best differentiating factor of productivity, but improvements in prediction were possible using other soil parameters. Exchangeable calcium was the soil chemical factor found to be most significantly related to productivity. The pooling of soil parent materials into groups to allow for more efficient management planning is discussed.  相似文献

Spotted gum (Corymbia citriodora subspecies Variegata) has the potential to be the major hardwood species for large-scale plantations in Southeast Queensland, Australia, but production research is limited due to the lack of age of research plots. Optimal spacing is a major subject of concern. Based on time series data from a spotted gum experiment site, growth performance was analyzed for five spacing levels: 11.3 m?×?11.3 m (78 stems ha?1), 7.4 m?×?7.4 m (182 stems ha?1), 5.4 m?×?5.4 m (343 stems ha?1), 3.6 m?×?3.6 m (771 stems ha?1), and 2.9 m?×?2.9 m (1189 stems ha?1). The major objective was assumed to be to maximize total merchantable log volume. A growth model was produced, and the mean diameter at breast height (DBH) and total merchantable log volume for each spacing level at a range of harvesting ages were estimated. From the analysis, the spacing level of 5.4 m?×?5.4 m was found to be optimal for maximizing merchantable log volume to a 10-cm small-end diameter. Further analysis of mean DBH, height, and volume of the largest 200 and 250 trees from this spacing level indicates that merchantable log volume could be maximized by retaining the 250 largest trees ha?1. The total financial revenue from the best spacing level in 25 and 30 yr are predicted to be Australian dollars (A$) 13,637 and A$17,779 ha?1, respectively. If full rotation data could be obtained, more reliable models could be produced, and a more accurate financial estimate could be made.  相似文献

Mean tree height, dominant height, mean diameter, stem number, basal area and timber volume of 116 georeferenced field sample plots were estimated from various canopy height and canopy density metrics derived by means of a small-footprint laser scanner over young and mature forest stands using regression analysis. The sample plots were distributed systematically throughout a 6500 ha study area, and the size of each plot was 232.9 m2. Regressions for coniferous forest explained 60–97% of the variability in ground reference values of the six studied characteristics. A proposed practical two-phase procedure for prediction of corresponding characteristics of entire forest stands was tested. Fifty-seven test plots within the study area with a size of approximately 3740 m2 each were divided into 232.9 m2 regular grid cells. The six examined characteristics were predicted for each grid cell from the corresponding laser data using the estimated regression equations. Average values for each test plot were computed and compared with ground-based estimates measured over the entire plot. The bias and standard deviations of the differences between predicted and ground reference values (in parentheses) of mean height, dominant height, mean diameter, stem number, basal area and volume were ?0.58 to ?0.85 m (0.64–1.01 m), ?0.60 to ?0.99 m (0.67–0.84 m), 0.15–0.74 cm (1.33–2.42 cm), 34–108 ha?1 (97–466 ha?1), 0.43–2.51 m2 ha?1 (1.83–3.94 m2 ha?1) and 5.9–16.1 m3 ha?1 (15.1–35.1 m3 ha?1), respectively.  相似文献

通过对昆明市野鸭湖景区不同的植被类型及土壤类型设样调查。其调查研究的结果表明:该景区的主要土壤类型有山地红壤、山地黄红壤、黄壤、黄棕壤、黄色砂壤等5种类型,红壤、黄红壤、黄壤基本各占1/3,土壤质地大多数是粘壤土。主要成土岩石有石灰岩、砂岩、变质岩(板岩、片岩)、红色砂岩、紫色砂岩等,主要成土母质有残积母质、坡积母质等类型;为酸性土壤,土壤的有机质含量较低,缺乏有效氮,严重缺乏有效磷,土壤交换性能较差,肥力偏低,且土壤的侵蚀现象明显。据此,应防止景区植被的进一步破坏。  相似文献

Pessimistic forecasts often suggest that widely spaced trees enjoying free growth (no competition with other trees) will fail to provide high quality timber. This challenges the temperate agroforestry practice of planting widely spaced trees to produce high quality timber. We analyse tree growth data from recent temperate agroforestry plantations aged three to eight years, featuring low tree plantation densities (50 to 400 stems ha−1), the association of trees with intercrops (silvoarable systems) or animals (silvopastoral systems), and the use of plastic shelter tubes to protect trees (1.2 to 2.5 m high) and avoid damage by cattle or sheep in pastures or facilitate maintenance in silvoarable systems. The plantations are located in climates ranging from Mediterranean, dry central temperate plains, cold and wet central uplands to mild oceanic areas. Some plantations included a forestry control (high density of plantation, no tree shelter, no intercropping nor grazing). Trees were evaluated for height and diameter growth and stem form (straightness and absence of knots). Trees in most agroforestry plots grew satisfactorily, often faster than in forestry control plots. In some experimental plots, average annual height increments as high as 1 m and diameter increments as high as 1.5 cm were observed. Few agroforestry plantations were unsuccessful, and the reasons for the failures are discussed: animal damage in silvopastoral plots, but also a wrong choice of tree species unsuitable for local soil and climate characteristics. From these early results we can formulate some guidelines for designing future agroforestry plantations in temperate climates, concerning tree density, use of tree shelters and care required for widely spaced trees. The carryover effects of N fertilization on five coastal Pacific Northwest Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) plantations were studied. “Carryover” is defined as the long-term impact of N fertilizer added to a previous stand on the growth of a subsequent stand. Average height and diameter at 1.3 m above-ground (DBH) of 7–9-year-old Douglas-fir trees and biomass and N-content of understory vegetation were assessed on paired control (untreated) and urea-N-fertilized plots that had received cumulative additions of 810–1120 kg N ha−1 to a previous stand. Overall productivity was significantly greater in the fertilized stands compared to the controls. In 2006, the last growth measurement year, mean seedling height was 15% greater (p = 0.06) and mean DBH was 29% greater (p = 0.04) on previously fertilized plots compared to control plots. Understory vegetation biomass of fertilized plots was 73% greater (p = 0.005), and N-content was 97% greater (p = 0.004) compared to control plots. These results show that past N fertilization markedly increased seedling growth in these plantations as well as biomass and N-content of understory vegetation in a subsequent rotation. These findings suggest that N fertilization could potentially increase site productivity of young Douglas-fir stands found on low quality sites in the Pacific Northwest 15–22 years after application by a carryover effect. These plantations have not yet reached the age where marketable materials can be harvested from them, and the growth of trees should be monitored over a longer time period before potential impacts on older stands, if any, can be determined.  相似文献

Mesquite (Prosopis alba Grisebach), an important species in arid and semiarid regions, is currently commercially propagated by seeds and so there is great interest in developing techniques for species propagation, domestication and improvement. Cloning through mini-cuttings is a new and promising technique for the production of clonal seedlings of forest species. The main objective of this work was to evaluate vegetative propagation using the mini-cutting technique and indolebutyric acid (IBA) at different concentrations (0, 3,000, 4,500, 6,000 and 7,500 mg L?1) on rooting of P. alba clones. Rooting was achieved in 98–100 % of the mini-cuttings at all concentrations tested. Increasing IBA concentration resulted in an increase in the number of leaves and leaflets, as well as in fresh matter weight and number and length of roots of clone seedlings, until an optimum point (between 3480 and 4800 mg L?1) was reached. Plants were also vegetatively propagated in the field via conventional clonal garden cuttings under the same rooting conditions to compare the efficiency of the two propagation techniques. Mini-cuttings showed higher rooting and survival percentages than cuttings. A correlation analysis conducted between characteristics of stock plants (height, diameter, number of shoots) and shoots (height, diameter) showed a positive correlation between rooting and height of shoots with total root length, leaflet number, and height of clonal seedlings. We propose the mini-cutting technique as a tool for P. alba cloning.  相似文献

The effects of management mode and intensity both on growth parameters (diameter and height of sprouts) and soil fertility were studied in experimental plots in coppice chestnut forests of Athos and Pelion mountains – Greece. The empirical management practice applied in Athos is intensive with a rotation period every 20–22 years, including removal of timber products during selective loggings and final clear-cut loggings. The management type applied in Pelion by the Forest Service is more flexible (much longer rotation period) with remaining in situ of plant residues. The soils of both areas were originated by the same parent material (gneiss), they have loamy texture, similar bulk density values, and they are acidic. Higher values of diameter and height of sprouts were observed in Athos compared to Pelion (statistically significant differences). Pelion soils presented higher levels of soil fertility, i.e., in forest floor higher organic matter and nutrients content (significant differences for P, Ca, Na, Cu, and Mn), and in soil higher levels of N, Ca, Na, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn and organic matter (significant differences for N, Cu, Mn, and organic matter). The findings of this work could be an important tool to the perspective of chestnut forests management practices.  相似文献

Shoot biomass production was estimated in two Estonian short rotation forest (SRF) plantations during the first rotation cycle (1994–1997). The plantations were established with six clones of Salix viminalis and one clone of Salix dasyclados in 1993. The plantation, located on well-composed organic soil, was characterised by higher productivity (6.2 t DM ha−1 per year) compared with the plantation on poor mineral soil (5.2 t DM ha−1 per year). Fertilisation of the latter plantation increased its productivity to 11.0 t DM ha−1 per year, which is the value close to a predicted maximum for Swedish climatic conditions. In fertilised plots, clone 81090 of S. dasyclados was characterised by the highest productivity among all clones, but also by high stool mortality. Clones 78021 and 78183 of S. viminalis had the most stable and relatively high productivity and can therefore be recommended as promising planting material for SRF in Estonia.

When estimating production, the use of proper allometric relations between shoot dry weight and diameter is of crucial importance. Additional measurements on 1-year-old shoots in 1998 showed that besides shoot age also clone and fertilisation are significant factors influencing allometric relations. The dry weight of fertilised shoots was about 10% lower than that of non-fertilised shoots of the same height and diameter. Older shoots were heavier than younger shoots with a similar diameter.  相似文献
