The control of gastrointestinal nematodes requires an understanding of their epidemiology so that particular parasite stages can be targeted. Dam infection during early lactation is one example of this in ruminant nematode infections. The existence of the peri-parturient relaxation in immunity and its impact on productivity were examined in a Creole goat flock from Guadeloupe, exposed to mixed natural infection (predominantly Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis). A total of 1,511 l were obtained from 909 does resulting from 463 dams and 150 sires. Fecal and blood samples were collected at kidding before anthelmintic drenching, 4 and 6 weeks after kidding. The traits analyzed were logarithm transformed fecal egg counts (FEC), packed cell volume (PCV), and logarithm transformed blood eosinophilia counts (EOS) for does at each sampling point and changes in these during the postpartum period. With the exception of the PCV values measured at kidding, lactating does had significantly higher FEC and lower PCV than control dry does at every sampling point. Geometric means of FEC in lactating does were 819 +/- 174, 677 +/- 146 and, 699 +/- 160 eggs per gram (EPG) at kidding, 4 and 6 weeks after kidding respectively. Geometric means of FEC in dry does were 187 +/- 57, 89 +/- 28, 133 +/- 43 at these time points, respectively. EOS differences were not consistent between groups and probably not specific enough for variations in Creole goats' peri-parturient rise to be discussed. As does aged, their egg output decreased and primiparous does always had greater egg output than multiparous ones. Overall, does' FEC at 4 weeks after kidding decreased by 1.3% each year. The higher the litter size, the higher the FEC at kidding and inverse applied for PCV measurements. Does that stopped lactating had significantly lower FEC and higher PCV values than lactating does with low milk yields. Higher infection rates during early lactation in Creole goats were recorded in does with lower maternal ability assessed by the average daily weight gain of kids between 10 and 30 days of age. Kids from dams with higher FEC (i.e. >600 EPG higher than corresponding does) had 17% lower average daily weight gain between 30 and 70 days postpartum and were approximately 1 kg lighter at weaning than kids from dams with lower FEC. Thus, it is clear that a peri-parturient rise in FEC exists in Creole goats. By controlling the intensity of this peri-parturient rise in FEC, herd health and productivity could be substantially improved.  相似文献

Three trials involving 140 does and 185 ewes were conducted at Ilonga. In the three trials, potassium iodide doses of 210 mg were drenched to half of the female animals 3 times during the first trial, 5 times and 4 times during and after the mating periods of the second and third trials respectively. The percent kidding/lambing was higher in the treated group of animals than in the control animals. The increase was due to high numbers of twin sets particulary in goats. The goitre incidences in the offspring, was significantly reduced by the administration of iodide to mothers during pregnancy. The average birth weight of the kids/lambs was depressed by iodide drenching in the first and second trials.  相似文献

The effect of physiological status (e.g. pregnancy and lactation) on the susceptibility to gastrointestinal nematodes was studied in the Dodoma and Kigoma strains of small East African goats in Morogoro. Forty-six pregnant does (19 Dodoma and 27 Kigoma strain) and 123 non-pregnant/dry (68 Dodoma and 55 Kigoma) from a controlled-breeding programme were used. Does were grazed on naturally contaminated pastures at Sokoine University of Agriculture for 8 months. Faecal samples and whole blood for determination of faecal egg counts (FEC), packed-cell volume (PCV) and blood eosinophils (EOS) from each animal were collected at monthly intervals from the mating period (through the gestation period) to 3 months after kidding. From kidding to 3 months after kidding, lactating does had significantly higher FEC than non-lactating/dry does. From 1 month after kidding to 3 months after kidding, lactating does had significantly lower PCV than dry does. Blood eosinophils were higher in non-lactating/dry does than lactating does but only significant at 3 months after kidding. There were no significant differences in FEC, PCV and EOS between lactating Dodoma and lactating Kigoma does. We concluded that there was no difference in peri-parturient helminthosis between Dodoma and Kigoma strains and that blood eosinophilia decreased during peri-parturient helminthosis in both strains.  相似文献

FAMACHA is a practical on-farm system designed to provide small ruminant producers a tool for improving their management of Haemonchus contortus infections. Although this system has become very popular and widely accepted by small ruminant producers in many regions of the southern United States, there is very limited data reported on the effectiveness of the FAMACHA system when performed by farmers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the FAMACHA system for on-farm use by small ruminant producers during the summer season. Small ruminant producers from Georgia, Louisiana, Florida, and Puerto Rico were trained to use the FAMACHA system by veterinarians and scientists experienced with this method. FAMACHA scores were assigned at least every 2 weeks by producers to weaned and mature sheep (n=552) and goats (n=676) of various breeds and ages between April and September 2004. At intervals that varied among farms from 2 to 8 weeks, researchers determined body condition scores (BCS; 1=thin and 5=fat) and collected blood and feces from a group of animals selected randomly to determine packed cell volume (PCV) and fecal egg counts (FEC). Two separate anemia thresholds were evaluated; these were defined by either FAMACHA score (>or=3 versus >or=4) or PCV (or=3 were considered anemic and PCV cutoff was or=3 were considered anemic and PCV cutoff was 相似文献

AIM: To determine whether drenching regimes for lambs by which a proportion (10%) of the heaviest animals was selectively left untreated, or animals are only drenched 'on demand' when faecal nematode egg counts (FEC) exceeded a threshold level, would result in measurable increases in parasite larval challenge in the autumn and/or decreases in the performance of lambs. METHODS: A replicated study compared three drenching strategies in which mobs of lambs (n=360 in total) received either: a five-drench preventive programme, administered to all animals (Treatment 1); a five-drench preventive programme, but the 10% heaviest animals left untreated each time (Treatment 2); or drench treatments administered only when FEC exceeded 500 eggs per gram of faeces (epg) (Treatment 3). After the five-drench programme, animals in Treatments 1 and 2 were treated according to FEC as for Treatment 3. A triple-combination drench containing ivermectin, oxfendazole and levamisole, administered orally, was used for all treatments. There were nine farmlets, allowing three replicates of each treatment, in a completely randomised design. Parasite infestations on pasture were measured in autumn by pasture plucks, and worm burdens were monitored in tracer lambs, while the performance of lambs was assessed by liveweight gains, fleece weights, and body condition and dag scores. RESULTS: Increased numbers of Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis larvae on pasture were found in the autumn on farmlets treating selectively or on-demand (Treatments 2 and 3). No differences were detected in other parasite species. Mean liveweight gains did not differ between treatments but some differences were detected between drenched and undrenched lambs in Treatment 2. Mean body condition and mean dag scores of lambs in Treatment 3 tended to be lower and higher, respectively, than those of lambs in Treatment 1; Treatment 2 was generally intermediate. CONCLUSIONS: Drenching strategies for lambs designed to slow the development of anthelmintic resistance, by increasing the pool of susceptible worms available to dilute resistant survivors after treatment, resulted in increased numbers of H. contortus and T. colubriformis but not other species of parasite on pasture. The increased parasite challenge to lambs in the autumn was associated with small production losses, which may be acceptable to farmers wishing to implement such strategies. It is clear that further work is required on the interaction between management practices and the population dynamics of parasites, especially with regard to creating pools of susceptible genotypes to slow the development of drench resistance.  相似文献

Cypermethrin toxicity was produced in mice by intra-peritoneal injection of the pesticide at 50 mg/kg body weight per day for 26 days, and in goats by drenching with cypermethrin at 41.6 mg/kg body weight per day for 30 days. The status of cell-mediated immunity (CMI) was assessed by the 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) skin sensitivity test. The results indicated significant depression of CMI in the cypermethrin-treated mice and goats. In addition, the humoral immune reaction of the goats intoxicated with cypermethrin was estimated by enumeration of the plaque-forming B-lymphocytes. The rate of plaque formation in the lymphocyte suspension of cypermethrin-treated goats was significantly reduced and the diameter of the plaques was also significantly lower than in that of control animals. The results indicated that cypermethrin suppressed both CMI and the antibody-forming ability of lymphocytes. This immunosuppressive action of cypermethrin is being reported for the first time.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a sustained-release multi-trace element/vitamin ruminal bolus (TEB) containing copper administered to mature does for control of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) during summer months and during late gestation. Haemonchus contortus was the predominant nematode during these trials. In Experiment 1, yearling Spanish does were untreated or administered TEB (n=11/group) on Day 0 (August 2005) prior to breeding. In Experiment 2, Spanish and Boer does were untreated or administered TEB 6 weeks before kidding. Fecal egg counts (FEC) and blood packed cell volume (PCV) were determined weekly between Days 0 and 42. In both experiments, FEC were reduced within 7 days in TEB-treated compared with untreated does. PCV was similar between treatment groups (Experiment 1) or tended to be lower in the TEB group (Experiment 2). GIN control did not persist more than 28 days. These studies suggest that TEB may be an effective means of GIN control in mature goats, but additional control measures may be necessary.  相似文献

Q fever is a zoonosis caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium, Coxiella burnetii. Aborting domestic ruminants are the main source of human infection. In January 2003, an abortion episode occurred in a dairy caprine herd where 18/60 (30%) goats experienced reproductive problems: 4/60 (7%) aborted and 14/60 (23%) had stillbirths. Serological screening for abortion-related infectious diseases suggested Q fever. The diagnosis of C. burnetii infection was confirmed with PCR based on the occurrence of C. burnetii shedding into vaginal mucus, faeces and colostrums taken after kidding from the affected animals. The pregnancy following this episode resulted in one abortion and four stillbirths; three of those goats had already experienced reproductive failure during the previous kidding season. The seroprevalence of C. burnetii infection and the bacteria shedding were investigated using both ELISA and PCR assays, respectively, during the course of the initial and subsequent kidding seasons. Serological testing, performed on the whole herd 6 weeks after the abortion episode, showed 48/60 (80%) of ELISA positive goats. PCR assay performed on both vaginal swab and milk samples showed that the bacterium was shed for almost four months after the outbreak. C. burnetii DNA was also amplified from vaginal swab and milk samples taken from goats after the second kidding season. Furthermore, the bacteria were found into 14 vaginal swabs and 12 milk samples taken from infected females at both kidding seasons.  相似文献

This study evaluated the variation in the prevalence of endoparasitoses and their impact on body condition and blood values of sheep of the Morada Nova breed. A total of 138 ewes were examined for their morphology (body weight, BW; body condition score, BCS), parasitology (faecal egg count, FEC; Famacha© score; coproculture), hematology (red blood cell count,RBC); hemoglobin concentration, HE; packet cell volume, PCV; mean corpuscular volume, MCV,; mean corpuscular hemoglobin, MCH; mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, MCHC; leukocytes, WBC) and serum biochemistry (glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, urea, creatinine, total protein, albumin, globulin, AST and ALT). Overall the animals presented higher BW and BCS in the months of September and December, however, with high FEC, in addition to a large number of animals with Famacha score 4 and 5. The results showed that the main hematophagous worm affecting the sheep, the genus Haemonchus ssp, appeared in a greater proportion (30–71.66%) than the other worms in all months of the study, except in March. About 30% of the hematological values found in the study are outside the reference ranges for suable sheep e 45.50% for serum biochemistry. These findings demonstrate the most healthy period of the year was from March to June for endoparasites control, however, in the months of September and December the animals showed better performance measures.  相似文献

Recent studies on sheep and goat farms in the southern United States indicate that multiple-anthelmintic resistance in Haemonchus contortus is becoming a severe problem. Though many factors are involved in the evolution of resistance, the proportion of the parasite population under drug selection is believed to be the single most important factor influencing how rapidly resistance develops. Therefore, where prevention of resistance is an important parallel goal of worm control, it is recommended to leave a portion of the animals untreated. Recently, a novel system called FAMACHA was developed in South Africa, which enables clinical identification of anemic sheep and goats. When H. contortus is the primary parasitic pathogen, this system can be applied on the farm level to reduce the number of treatments administered, thereby increasing the proportion of the worm population in refugia. Since most studies validating the FAMACHA method have been performed in South Africa, it is important that the method be tested in other regions before its use is broadly recommended. We performed a validation study of FAMACHA by testing the system in sheep (n = 847) and goats (n = 537) of various breeds and ages from 39 farms located in Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Florida, and the US Virgin Islands. The color of the ocular conjunctiva of all animals were scored on a 1-5 scale using the FAMACHA card, and blood samples were collected from each animal for determination of packed cell volume (PCV). Fecal samples were also collected from a majority of the animals tested for performance of fecal egg counts (FEC). Correlations between PCV and eye scores, PCV and FEC, and FEC and eye scores were all highly significant for both sheep and goats (P < 0.001). Data for both FAMACHA scores and PCV were evaluated using two separate criteria for anemia: eye score values of 3, 4 and 5 or 4 and 5, and PCV values of < or =19 or < or =15 were considered anemic. Specificity was maximized when eye score values of 4 and 5 were considered anemic and PCV cut off for anemia was < or =19, but sensitivity was low. In contrast, sensitivity was 100% for both sheep and goats when eye score values of 3, 4 and 5 were considered anemic and PCV cut off was < or =15, but specificity was low. In both sheep and goats, predictive value of a negative was greater than 92% for all anemia and eye score categories, and was greater than 99% for both eye score categories when an anemia cutoff of < or =15 was used. Predictive value of a positive test was low under all criteria indicating that many non-anemic animals would be treated using this system. However, compared to conventional dosing practices where all animals are treated, a large proportion of animals would still be left untreated. These data indicate that the FAMACHA method is an extremely useful tool for identifying anemic sheep and goats in the southern US and US Virgin Islands. However, further studies are required to determine optimal strategies for incorporating FAMACHA-based selective treatment protocols into integrated nematode control programs.  相似文献

The results of 5732 records of kids born between 1985 and 1996 at Gardel Agricultural Experiment Station (INRA) in Guadeloupe, were used in order to estimate the effect of kidding day (KD) on individual preweaning growth performances, total productivity of Creole goats and litter size. The flock was subjected to a restricted mating season for a long time, by using male effect. The results of the fixed linear model showed a highly significant (P<0.001) effect of KD on growth rate and total productivity of does. Live weights of kids born around the 21st day of the kidding period (KP) was 4% to 7% higher than those of kids born the first day of the KP. For total productivity of does, this ratio did not reached more than 4%. The optimum at 70 days of age occurred around 14th day of the KD with 3% of improvement of total productivity. No effect was observed upon litter size. The genetic (co)variance components were estimated by six different Individual Animal Models. The heritability (h2) estimated from the best model, was hD2=0.25±0.05 for genetic direct effect; hM2=0.09±0.04 for genetic maternal effect and the genetic correlation between direct and maternal effects was −0.86±0.12. The use of KD could be highly recommended in a breeding program in this population of Creole meat goats, since it is quite easy to record under commercial conditions as a character related to reproductive performance.  相似文献

Prevalence of anthelmintic resistance in gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) of goats has necessitated studies for alternative means of control. The objective was to determine the effectiveness of dietary copper sulfate for control of GIN in meat goats. Naturally infected buck kids received 0 (LC), 78 (MC) or 158 (HC) mg copper sulfate (CS)/kid daily mixed with concentrate supplement for 63 days. After 42 days the HC group was re-randomized into either the LC or MC treatment. In another study, naturally infected yearling does were offered trace mineral mix with and without CS and intake was estimated to be 140-200mg CS/day. Goats grazed bermudagrass pastures and were rotated among two or three pastures to minimize pasture effects. Fecal egg count (FEC) and packed cell volume (PCV) were determined every 7 days in the first experiment and 14 days in the second experiment, and goats were weighed every 28 days. On Days 49 and 56 FEC were lower in the HC-treated kids (copper by day, P<0.02), but FEC were similar on all other days in the first experiment and were similar between the two groups of does in the second experiment. Blood packed cell volume was similar among treatment groups throughout both studies. Body weight was greater in LC compared with MC or HC-supplemented kids on Days 42 and 63 (copper by day, P<0.04). Body weights of does were similar on Days 0 and 56, but were reduced in those consuming trace mineral with CS on Day 28 (copper by day, P<0.03). Dietary CS failed to control GIN in this study.  相似文献

The 247 calves from 112 Creole cows of Guadeloupe were monitored for Toxocara vitulorum infection from year 2002 to 2005. The cows were in good body condition and the calf growth rate was 880g/d on average. The overall prevalence of infection was estimated to 0.77 [0.72; 0.83]. The faecal egg count peaked 49 days after calf birth, and then decreased. No clinical symptom related to T. vitulorum infection was observed, and no effect on the calf growth rate was shown. It was concluded that, despite the high prevalence of T. vitulorum, the production loss remains under the level of detection, and no drenching is needed for well-fed animals.  相似文献

One of the major post‐parturient complications in dairy goats is the retention of foetal membrane (RFM), which negatively influences their health, reproductive efficacy and welfare. The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of intrauterine either ozone (OZ) or antibiotic (AB) treatments to establish the use of OZ as a novel and potential alternative to AB therapy in does with the RFM. The study was performed on 7 herds of dairy goats (n = 563) kept in the farms in Croatia. The conception rate was 563 of 641 total matings or 87.83%. The does from selected farms were observed during early puerperium and were divided into animals without the RFM (n = 522) and with the RFM (n = 41), treated either with foam spray OZ (n = 21) or with foaming AB oxytetracycline tablets (n = 20). The does with the RFM were mated successfully and became pregnant next kidding season, regardless of the treatment applied. Treatment with OZ attained similar results to the standard AB therapy, indicating that it could be novel potential alternative therapy of the RFM in dairy goats.  相似文献

The objectives of these experiments were to determine the optimal dose of copper oxide wire particles (COWP) necessary to reduce gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection in young and mature goats naturally infected with Haemonchus contortus or a mixed infection and to determine whether the effectiveness could be enhanced through feeding management. Two experiments were conducted during cooler months in Georgia, and 4 experiments were conducted during warmer spring or summer months in Arkansas. Meat goats received 0 up to 10 g of COWP under a variety of management conditions. In all experiments, blood and feces were collected every 3 or 7 d from 6 to 42 d to determine blood packed cell volume (PCV) and fecal egg counts (FEC) to estimate the degree of GIN infection. In mature goats grazing fall pasture, mean FEC of 0 g of COWP-treated goats increased, and those of 4 g of COWP-treated goats remained low on d 0, 7, and 14 (COWP x d, P < 0.03), and FEC decreased on these days (P < 0.001). In 5 and 10 g of COWP-treated goats, PCV increased (P < 0.001), but FEC and PCV remained unchanged over time in control goats. Fecal egg counts were similar among all low doses (0.5, 1, 2, 4 g) of COWP administered to weaned kids for all dates examined (P > 0.10), which were lower on d 7 through 21 (COWP x date, P < 0.05) but similar by d 28, compared with FEC of 0 g of COWP-treated kids. Packed cell volume was lower in 0 g compared with all COWP-treated kids by d 14 (COWP x date, P < 0.05). Feeding management in combination with COWP for GIN control had little effect compared with COWP alone for these short-term studies. In conclusion, a dose of COWP as low as 0.5 g, which was considered optimal to reduce the risk of copper toxicity, was effective in reducing FEC in young goats, and 5 g of COWP was effective in older goats. Copper oxide does not appear to be effective in controlling newly acquired L4 stage (preadult) larvae, which also feed on blood, leading to decreased PCV in newly infected goats.  相似文献

During the kidding season between January and April 2003, 10 farms were selected and divided into two groups of five. The farms in group A had had serious diarrhoeal illness and losses in neonatal kids the previous year, and there were Cryptosporidium parvum infections in kids associated with diarrhoea during the survey. On the farms in group B, there was no history of diarrhoeal disease the previous year and neither C parvum oocysts nor diarrhoea were detected in neonatal kids during the survey. Faecal samples were collected once from 10 adult goats aged between one and seven years on each farm. To assess more accurately the pattern of output of oocysts of C parvum and cysts of Giardia duodenalis by periparturient adult goats, one farm was selected from each group, faecal samples were collected weekly before and after kidding from 12 goats on the farm in group A and from 10 goats on the farm in group B. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of G duodenalis cysts between the group A farms (14 per cent) and the group B farms (12 per cent), and the numbers of cysts excreted ranged from 143 to 400 cysts per gram of faeces (cpg) on the group A farms and 72 to 334 cpg on the group B farms. There was a significant difference (P=0.03) in the prevalence of C parvum oocysts at the group level between the group A farms (20 per cent) and the group B farms (6 per cent). All the adult goats excreted cysts and oocysts at some date around the kidding period; the number of animals excreting cysts of G duodenalis or oocysts of C parvum increased when they gave birth, and seven to 10 times more cysts and oocysts were shed in the three weeks around kidding than in the period more than three weeks from kidding (P<0.001).  相似文献

A mycoplasma survey of goats with a history of mastitis, polyarthritis, and pneumonia revealed a high incidence of Mycoplasma mycoides subsp mycoides (large-colony type). During the early winter kidding season of 1979-1980, kid morbidity in a large commercial dairy herd, evidenced by hyperthermia, polyarthritis, and pneumonia, exceeded 90%. In excess of 200 kids died. Colostral cultures of the parent does yielded 157 isolations from 605 goats (26%). Additional isolations were made from goats with polyarthritis, peritonitis, CNS disorders, and pneumonia; these animals represented 6 California counties and the states of Arizona and Idaho. Identification was accomplished by growth inhibition and immunofluorescent studies. Titers in the colostrum, although variable, were as high as 1 x 10(10) viable organisms/ml and remained virtually undiminished after storage at 5 C for periods of greater than or equal to 4 weeks. The experimental inoculation of the organism into normal goats 1 week to 2 years of age resulted in the death of most animals between the 4th and 14th day after inoculation, whether the organism was administered intraperitoneally, IM, into the teat canal, or orally to young animals. The primary lesions were a fibrinopurulent polyarthritis, fibrinous pleuritis, and pneumonia. It appears that goats can acquire the infection through ingestion, and the organism seems to be widespread in the United States.  相似文献

Giemsa-stained thin blood smears prepared monthly from cattle, sheep and goats in the Greater Accra region of Ghana between May 1994 and December 1996 were examined for presence of tick-borne haemoparasites. The majority of animals were less than 2 months old at the start of the survey. Monthly and cumulative incidences are presented of Anaplasma sp., Babesia bigemina, Borrelia sp., Eperythrozoon sp., Theileria mutans and Theileria velifera in cattle, Anaplasma sp., Borrelia sp., and Theileria sp. in sheep, and Anaplasma sp. in goats. T. mutans was the commonest parasite in cattle, with 100% incidence in calves by 10 months of age, and Anaplasma was commonest in small ruminants. The relative prevalence of these haemoparasites in blood smears from cattle, sheep and goats sampled on a single occasion at sites in all 10 regions of Ghana was found to be similar, though actual infection rates were lower. Packed cell volume (PCV) measurements from the sampled animals are also presented; no seasonal trends were evident in the PCV of the cattle, sheep and goats sampled monthly. In animals sampled on a single occasion, mean PCV was significantly higher in cattle and sheep without detectable haemoparasite infection, and in cattle was lowest in animals positive for both Babesia and Anaplasma, while there was no difference in mean PCV levels between parasitised and non-parasitised goats.  相似文献

AIMS: To determine the incidence of ruminoreticulum bypass in lambs before and after weaning, following drenching with anthelmintic-equivalent volumes of fluid; to investigate the influence of withholding feed for 24 hours before drenching on the incidence of ruminoreticulum bypass; and to investigate the hypothesis that ruminoreticulum bypass occurs more frequently following drenching with large than with low volumes. The relationship between these factors and the efficacy of benzimidazole anthelmintic drenches has been widely promoted in New Zealand and Australia. METHODS: Video-taped fluoroscopy, using barium sulphate suspension with a specific gravity of 1.38 as a contrast medium, was used to study closure of the reticular groove and ruminoreticulum bypass in sheep. RESULTS: When lambs were drenched with 3 ml of barium sulphate suspension/10 kg liveweight soon after removal from pasture, ruminoreticulum bypass only occurred before weaning and during the first 8 weeks after weaning. However, when a low volume drench (1 ml/10 kg) was used in lambs soon after removal from pasture during the same period, ruminoreticulum bypass was not observed. When recently weaned lambs were yarded for 24 hours before drenching with barium sulphate suspension, substantial (> or = 20%) ruminoreticulum bypass occurred in 25-58% of the animals. When 8-9 month-old hoggets were yarded for 24 hours before drenching, substantial ruminoreticulum bypass occurred in 35% of the animals. Ruminoreticulum bypass was not observed in the same group of hoggets when drenched soon after removal from pasture, in a reversed crossover experiment. This effect of withholding feed for 24 hours on ruminoreticulum bypass was significant (p < 0.0001). In hoggets which had been yarded for 24 hours before drenching with barium sulphate suspension, the incidence of ruminoreticulum bypass was significantly lower (p = 0.0026) following the use of a low volume (1 ml/10 kg) when compared to high volume (3 ml/ 10 kg) of drench. Thus, the effect of withholding feed for 24 hours on ruminoreticulum bypass was largely overcome when the low volume drench was used. CONCLUSIONS: These results support the use of low volume formulations of benzimidazole drenches for New Zealand pasture-fed lambs less than 6 months old. The results indicate that, in order to obtain the optimum efficacy of benzimidazole anthelmintics in New Zealand pasture-fed sheep, which have been yarded for 24 hours, low volume drench formulations should be used.  相似文献
