Faba beans and peas were compared as spring sown whole-crop forages in two trials at Lough-gall. No herbicide, insecticide or N fertilizer was used. Harvesting took place at the end of July. As pure stands, tic beans (cv. Blaze) yielded up to 10 t of dry matter (DM) ha−1. Lower yields were obtained at lower seed rates, or with horse beans (cv. Stella Spring), broad beans (cv. Polar) or peas (cvs Minerva and Krupp). Tic and horse bean forage had a mean DM concentration of 166 g kg−1, which was higher than those of broad bean and peas. Crude protein (CP) concentration at a mean of 159 g kg−1 was similar in tic beans and peas. Faba beans mixed with cereals yielded less than beans alone, but peas with cereals yielded slightly more than peas alone. The inclusion of a cereal raised forage DM contents but lowered CP contents. Perennial ryegrass-white clover mixtures undersown in faba beans established well, but poorer swards were obtained in some of the pure pea stands which lodged severely. It is concluded that, as pure stands, tic beans have advantages over peas. Some of the disadvantages of peas can be overcome by growing a mixture of peas with cereals.  相似文献

Two red clover ( Trifolium pratense ) cultivars, Red Head (tetraploid) and Kuhn (diploid), were sown at a seed rate of 13 kg ha−1 either alone or in mixture with Italian ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum ) cv. RvP sown at seed rates of 10, 15, 20 or 30 kg ha−1. RvP was also sown alone at a seed rate of 30 kg ha−1 and received nil or 300 kg ha−1 fertilizer a−1 fertilizer N. All plots were established using the barley cultivar Midas sown at a seed rate of 100 kg ha−1 as a nurse crop.
Neither clover cultivar nor ryegrass seed rate significantly influenced either dry matter harvested or botanical composition over the 3 harvest years. On average over all years the grass-clover mixtures produced 75% of the yield of the N-fertilized RvP, 125% of the clover monocultures and 225% of the unfertilized RvP. The red clover contribution to the total dry matter harvested of the mixtures averaged 45–60%. The dry matter concentrations of the mixtures were considerably higher than those of the pure clover stands. In the third year yields were markedly reduced in comparison with those in the first and second years.
It was concluded that Italian ryegrass can be a suitable companion grass for red clover. Its superior yielding capacity over other grasses such as perennial ryegrass or timothy under a conservation management can be coupled to advantage with red clover to give a sward which Is essentially stable, at least over a 2- to 3-year cropping period, although giving slightly reduced yields in the third year. Italian ryegrass-red clover mixtures, without the use of fertilizer N, can produce high DM yields of good quality herbage.  相似文献

Nitrogen fertilizer was applied at 0, 30,60 and 90 kg N ha-1 in March 1976, 1977 and 1978 to plots containing perennial ryegrass cv. Barlenna sown either alone or with white clover cv. Blanca, Sabeda, Olwen and S100 in four replicated blocks.
Dry matter (DM) yield of all swards responded positively to N with the response being highest in the no-clover swards in two of the three years. Annual DM yields were lower in the no-clover than in the mixed swards at any given N level. The higher levels of N reduced DM yield in mixed swards at some harvests in midsummer.
Swards of S100 were consistently among the lower yielding mixed swards, whereas the other three clover cultivars varied in their relative yields. There were no N x cultivar interactions for white clover yields; irrespective of cultivar, N application reduced annual white clover yield by similar amounts.
It is concluded that it is beneficial to apply moderate amounts of N fertilizer to mixed swards in spring and that under these conditions the yield differences between swards including medium-large and smaller leaved white clover cultivars are similar to differences between the inherent yield potential of these cultivars in mixed swards receiving no N.  相似文献

The aim was to study the effects of white clover cultivar and combinations with perennial ryegrass cultivars on seedling establishment in autumn‐sown swards and on winter survival of seedlings. Large‐leaved white clover cv. Alice and small‐leaved white clover cv. Gwenda, and an erect and a prostrate perennial ryegrass cultivar were sown in autumn in pure stands and as four binary grass‐clover mixtures. Mixtures of white clover cv. Huia and Aberherald with perennial ryegrass were also sown. Companion grasses had no significant impact on the establishment of white clover. The number of seedlings of white clover cv. Alice in mixtures (335 m?2) was higher than cv. Gwenda (183 m?2) and pure swards had similar white clover population densities as mixed swards. White clover cv. Huia tended to have more seedlings than Aberherald (355 and 205 m?2 respectively). No stolons were produced prior to a severe winter, because of the late sowing date. Winter survival of clover seedlings was 0·56 in mixtures and 0·69 in pure stands, irrespective of white clover or companion grass cultivar. Stolon development of white clover in autumn is often considered essential for overwintering survival and spring growth. In this study, there was considerable survival of the non‐stoloniferous tap‐rooted seedlings of all four clover cultivars despite a severe winter.  相似文献

The productivity of permanent swards of mixed species composition was compared with that of sown Lolium perenne , cv. Melle at five fertilizer-N rates (0, 150, 300, 450 and 900 kg N ha−1) and with L. perenne/Trifolium repens , cv. Grasslands Huia at 0 kg N ha−1. The investigation was conducted under two cutting frequencies at sixteen sites in England and Wales, representing a range of grassland environments.
Annual total herbage dry matter (DM) production from both permanent and reseeded swards increased with successive increments of fertilizer-N up to 450 kg N ha−1. Herbage DM production from reseeded swards in the first year after sowing was signficantly higher than from the permanent swards, at all fertilizer-N treatments. In subsequent years the production advantage of the L. perenne reseeds was maintained only at the higher N rates, though sown L. perenne/T. repens was the most productive sward type at 0 N. Average differences in modified acid-detergent fibre suggested small advantages in herbage quality to the reseeded swards.
It is concluded that, while reseeded swards are more productive in the year after sowing, many permanent swards are capable of high levels of production and that reseeding to a L. perenne sward cannot always be justified, particularly for grassland receiving low or moderate inputs of fertilizer-N.  相似文献

White clover (cv. S184 or Blanca) or marsh trefoil (cv. Grasslands 4703 or Grasslands Maku) were sown alone and in combination with a companion grass (tall fescue, red fescue, perennial ryegrass or ryegrass cleanings) on a peat area of hill land originally dominated by Juncus articulatus and Molinia caerulea.
Lime and ground rock phosphate were applied in 1973, the area rotavated to a shallow depth and seeds sown in May 1974. No fertilizers were applied except at sowing time and two harvests were taken per annum for 4 years.
Differences in yield and legume content between companion grass treatments were small. After the first full harvest year Blanca swards usually had the lowest DM yields and those containing Maku the highest. The contribution of marsh trefoil to total herbage yield increased from 4·2% in 1975 to 22% in 1978, whereas white clover decreased from 4·2 to 1·2%. Legume yields in 1978 were less than half those in 1977. Overall, N yields were low, Maku swards fixing most N estimated to be highest in 1977 at 35 kg ha-1.
It is concluded that marsh trefoil grows well on upland peat but more information on its response to grazing is necessary before conclusions can be drawn about its value in hill land improvement.  相似文献

Four varieties of white clover (small-leaved cv. Aberystwyth S184. medium-leaved cv. Grasslands Huia and large-leaved cvs Linda and Olwen) were sown at 3 kg ha-1 together with 10 kg ha-1 perennial ryegrass cv. Talbot. Herbage productivity was measured for three harvest years, 1979-81, over four annual rates of fertilizer N (0,120,240 and 360 kg ha-1) and two closeness of cutting treatments (80 and 40 mm from ground level). A simulated grazing regime of six cuts per year at 3- to 6-week intervals was used.
Production of total herbage DM was increased by increasing N rate; mean annual DM production ranged from 783 1 ha-1 with no N to 11701 ha-1 at 360 kg ha-1 N. Mean herbage response to N (kg DM per kg N applied) was 73,90 and 108 for the three successive N increments relative to no N. Mean white clover DM production was reduced from 4 14t ha-1 with no N to 051 t ha-1 at 360 kg ha-1 N.
The large-leaved clover varieties were more productive than the small- or medium-leaved varieties at all N rates. Close cutting increased total herbage and white clover by a mean annual 16% and 31%. respectively. White clover varieties did not interact with either N rate or closeness of cutting.
It is concluded that repetitive N application over the growing season is incompatible with white clover persistence and production, even with large-leaved clover varieties or with close cutting, two factors which improved clover performance in the experimental swards.  相似文献

Red fescue ( Festuca rubra L.) cvs Reptans, Dawson and Ruby, perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) cvs Perma and Sprinter, crested dogstail ( Cynosurus cristatus L.) cv. Southlands, smooth meadow-grass ( Poa pratensis L.) cvs Parade and Arena, Yorkshire fog ( Holcus lanatus L.) commercial types I and II, creeping bent ( Agrostis stolonifera L.) cv. Penncross and rough meadow-grass ( Poa trivialis L.) cvs Omega Øtofte, Dasas and Sabre were each sown with white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) cv. Donna and the productivity of the fourteen mixtures assessed under simulated grazing (six harvests per year) for 3 years. A single fertilizer-N rate (50 kg ha−1) in early spring was applied to all treatments each year.
Over the 3 years, mean annual dry matter (DM) production of the swards ranged from 5·25 t ha−1 (creeping bent) to 8·71 t ha−1 (red fescue cv. Reptans), with the species ranking order of: red fescue > perennial ryegrass > crested dogstail > smooth meadow-grass > Yorkshire fog > creeping bent. Rough meadow-grass only persisted over the first harvest year. Mean annual organic matter digestibility (OMD) values of the swards ranged from 0·712 (creeping bent) to 0·782 (ryegrass cv. Sprinter). Mixtures with the lowest proportion of grass (crested dogstail and smooth meadow-grass) generally gave the highest proportions of white clover. The creeping bent mixture had exceptionally low production of both components.
Red fescue, crested dogstail and smooth meadow-grass showed compatibility with clover and, therefore, have potential for use in grass/clover swards. Yorkshire fog had lower compatability with clover. Some breeding effort to improve selected characteristics of promising species, e.g. improvement of low OMD in red fescue, seems warranted.  相似文献

The effect of the initial N-supplying capacity of soils (SoilN, 90–230 kg N ha–1 year–1) was tested on the dry-matter and N yields of pure or mixed white clover and perennial ryegrass swards, managed under simulated grazing over a 5-year period. The cumulated N harvested in the mixed swards was similar, both for white clover and perennial ryegrass, but the proportion of white clover showed oscillations over a 2-year period. In the first year, the SoilN effect was similar to that of fertilizer N. During the course of the experiment, the effect was always positive on the pure perennial ryegrass sward, alternately negative and nil for the white clover in the mixed sward and alternately positive and nil for the perennial ryegrass in the mixed sward; the period of these oscillations was 2 years. From the third regrowth period after sowing, the ratio between the actual N concentration and the concentration non-limiting to growth for the perennial ryegrass in the mixed sward, increased above that of the pure perennial ryegrass sward. It was in turn greater in the soils that were initially poor and then greater in those that were initially rich in soil N. The periodic oscillation of the initial SoilN effects implies that the initial SoilN gradient was alternately compensated and restored. It was concluded that N fluxes are partly responsible for the temporal oscillations in the proportion of white clover in mixed swards.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted over 3 years (1983-85) to assess the performance of Holcus lanatus German Commercial and cv. Massey Basyn compared with Lolium perenne cv. Perma on a gley soil under sheep grazing in the Scottish uplands. All grasses were sown together with Trifolium repens cv. Grasslands Huia. The swards were rotationally grazed at similar herbage allowances. During the first harvest year, the swards were grazed hard to a low mass (500 kg DM ha−1). In the second harvest year, post-grazing herbage masses of 500 and 1000 kg DM ha−1 were compared.
Perma ryegrass had a higher level of herbage production than both H. lanatus cultivars in the first and second harvest years after sowing and hence had a greater number of sheep grazing days. The ryegrass sward consisted of 25% more green sown grass (85 cf. 60%) but 12% less white clover (4 cf. 16%) compared with both H. lanatus cultivars in the establishment and first harvest years. The persistence of all three grasses was poor although ryegrass had a higher presence (36%) than either Massey Basyn (22%) or German Commercial (13%) at the end of the. second harvest year.
At a similar herbage allowance, there were no significant differences in the herbage intake and liveweight gain of sheep. Ryegrass had a higher organic matter digestibility and lower neutral and acid detergent fibre and lignin contents than either of the H. lanatus cultivars.
In the second harvest year, although herbage production was greater at the higher herbage mass, there was no difference in the proportion of sown grass.
It was concluded that ryegrass is a superior grass to H. lanatus on upland soils with high N status, moderate P status and a high pH.  相似文献

Four legumes—white clover cv. Blanca, red clover cvs Violetta (diploid) and Hungaropoly (tetraploid) and lucerne cv. Europe—were established as pure-sown swards and with each of five companion grasses: timothy cv. Timo, meadow fescue cv. Bundy, sweet brome cv. Deborah and perennial ryegrass cvs Talbot (diploid) and Barlatra (tetraploid), both ryegrasses being of 'intermediate' heading date. Two 'silage' crops and an 'aftermath grazing' crop were harvested in each of three successive years.
In the first harvest year, total herbage DM production of red clover ranged from 15·03 to 17·01 t ha-1. White clover and lucerne swards produced considerably less at 7·12 to 11·01 t ha-1. In the second harvest year, lucerne swards were the highest producing at 15·54 to 17·14 t ha-1, while DM production from red clover and white clover swards ranged from 6·75 to 11·87 t ha-1. Lucerne swards maintained their production superiority in the third year at 16·48 to 17·87 t ha-1, while production from white clover swards ranged from 6·41 to 10·23 t ha-1. However, red clover swards declined to 3·30 to 5·81 t ha -1; this above-average decline was mainly caused by the onset of red clover necrotic mosaic virus which affected all red clover plots uniformly in the second harvest year, and by winter conditions before the third harvest year. Total herbage DOM and CP yields of the swards were influenced in a similar manner to DM production.  相似文献

The performance of timothy in mixtures with perennial ryegrass was assessed under a simulated intensive grazing management over two harvest years in 1974–75. Three seed rates of S23 perennial ryegrass were factorially combined with three rates of Scots timothy and compared with pure stands of each grass. All were sown with Huia white clover. When cut six times at monthly intervals and with an annual N input of 350 kg ha?1, there were no significant differences in total DM production in either year. The 2-year mean DM yield for the nine mixtures and six pure swards was 9·77 t ha?1 (range 9·34–10·16). Compared with the pure ryegrass swards, in both years the ryegrass-timothy mixtures produced earlier spring growth but were significantly lower yielding at the second cut. Over the first five cuts the proptortion of timothy in the three mixtures with 22·4 kg ha?1 ryegrass seed averaged 26% in the first year and 37% in the second. Corresponding calculated mean DM yields of timothy were 2·75 and 3·00 t ha?1. It is concluded that an early timothy variety is capable of competing with a late-heading perennial ryegrass in frequently cut swards managed to simulate intensive grazing. The strong development of timothy in the dry summer of 1975 suggests that in mixtures of late perennial ryegrass varieties, an early variety of timothy should be beneficial for its spring growth in grazed swards.  相似文献

Data are presented for the fourth (1979) and fifth (1980) harvest years of a trial in which four levels of N fertilizer (0, 30, 60 and 90 kg N ha−1) were applied each spring to swards with grass (perennial ryegrass cv. Barlenna) and each one of four cultivars of while clover (Blanca, Sabeda, Olwen and S100) or grass alone. Results from the first three years have been published.
Dry matter (DM) harvested dropped from the fourth to fifth years over all swards by 1 −5 to 2 0 t ha−1 but response to N was maintained (17.4 and 24.4 kg DM (kgN)−l in response to 90 kg N ha−1 in 1979 and 1980 respectively) despite reductions in summer yields relative to unfertilized swards. Blanca swards produced significantly less DM harvested than all other cultivars in 1979 and all cultivars in 1980 except for Olwen. Clover DM harvested continued to fall from 1977, the mean for the unfertilized treatment in 1980 being 55% of that in 1979. Up to 1980 Sabeda swards produced more clover DM harvested than Blanca swards. Linear regressions between annual clover content at zero N and at each spring N level for each sward type over 5 harvest years were very highly significant. It is concluded that all cultivars used responded similarly to spring N. Further work to develop a method for predicting the effect of spring N on clover content of given swards is required.  相似文献

In experiments to determine the minimum fertilizer requirements for improved pasture on deep peat, yields were initially low and declined rapidly. Within 2 years persistence of sown species was poor when only 2·5 t lime ha-1 was applied. Analytical data suggested that K deficiency and low soil pH were contributory factors. When K was omitted from a composite nutrient solution, clover yield was reduced by 50% when 2·5 t lime ha-1 was applied but was not significantly reduced with 5·0 t lime. Clover alone produced little response to either P or K separately, but highly significant positive interactions were recorded. Clover, but not ryegrass, responded to K topdressing in field cut-herbage experiments. There was a 3-fold increase in ryegrass yield with combined P and K topdressing under grazing; 10 times more N and K were recycled in urine on this treatment than on the control.
It was concluded that at least 5·0 t lime, 60 kg P and 80 kg K ha-1 are required for pasture establishment and that soil pH should be maintained above 5·0 to minimize K requirements. The significance of nutrient cycling and of lime × K and P × K interactions is discussed in relation to the persistence of sown species and the maintenance of improved swards on deep peat.  相似文献

Seven forage types (diploid and tetraploid perennial ryegrass, Italian ryegrass and hybrid ryegrass, a low‐input mixture of perennial ryegrass, cocksfoot, timothy and meadow fescue, a mixture of perennial ryegrass and white clover, and monoculture of red clover) were sown in late July 2004. Each received one of four rates of dairy cattle slurry in three annual applications by trailing shoe, which supplied average nitrogen (N) inputs of 0·0, 114·9, 204·8 and 301·2 kg N ha?1 annum?1. Treatments were cut either three or four times annually over four years. Average dry‐matter yield (DM) response to slurry N was 15·6 kg DM kg?1 N. Lowest recovery of slurry N was in the second application each year (after first cut). The data suggest that slurry applied to Italian ryegrass, and also to swards containing legumes on soils with high phosphorus content, will produce a lower DM response to slurry N and result in a lower slurry N recovery than on swards of perennial ryegrass or cocksfoot‐dominant low‐input mixtures. Apparent recovery of slurry N was low at the second cut, especially when first‐cut yields had been high. To maximize slurry N recovery, application to regrowths with potentially slow rates of growth or high legume content should be avoided.  相似文献

Three diploid red clover cultivars—Sabtoron, Violetta and Essex—and three tetraploid, Hungaropoly, Teroba and Red Head, were sown separately in pure culture and with each of three companion grasses: timothy (Aberystwyth S48), tall fescue (Aberystwyth S170) and perennial ryegrass (Aberystwyth S24).
The effects of fertilizer N on yield and on clover/grass ratio over a 2-year period (seventh and eighth harvest years) subsequent to 6 harvest years during which no N fertilizer was applied were investigated. The data for productivity and persistence have already been published (McBratney, 1981; 1984).
Application of fertilizer N increased DM yields in the eighth year. In this year, the highest yield, 11·9t ha-1, averaged over the six clover cultivars, was given in association with tall fescue. Tall fescue contributed 90% of this yield. Clover content continued to decrease in all swards but the decrease was greatest in the swards receiving fertilizer N. The yield of clover DM averaged over the six cultivars under N treatment declined from 5·6t ha-1 in the seventh year to only 0·4t ha-1 in the eighth year.
The results from this trial demonstrate the potential of red clover sown either pure or in mixture with a suitable perennial grass, to maintain high output of quality herbage over a 6-year period without the aid of fertilizer N. They further demonstrate that following decline in red clover content, both herbage yield and quality may be restored by the application of N fertilizer, particularly where the clover was seeded with a highly productive companion grass.  相似文献

A mathematical model which simulates the potential production and utilization of herbage on perennial ryegrass and grass-white clover swards in the context of an 18-month beef enterprise is described. Using the model the potential costs and benefits of replacing grass by grass-clover mixtures have been determined. Potentially grass-clover swards receiving no fertilizer N are shown to have annual DM yields equivalent to ryegrass swards receiving at least 300 kg N ha −1. Apart from the benefits of reduced fertilizer N usage there appear to be indirect benefits related to a lower concentrate requirement per head. In consequence, from an economic viewpoint grass-clover swards potentially compare very favourably with heavily fertilized grass swards, even if account is taken of the opportunity costs of lower stocking rates associated with grass-clover systems. However, this conclusion awaits experimental confirmation.  相似文献

Two 1·0 ha plots of a late-heading diploid perennial ryegrass (var. Contender) and a late-heading tetraploid ryegrass (var. Condesa), and two 1·4 ha plots of the tetraploid with Aberystwyth S184 small-leaved white clover, were direct sown in May 1987. Over the three years 1988–90 they were continuously stocked by Mule ewes with Suffolk-cross twin lambs, from early April to the end of August, at a target sward surface height (SSH) of 4–6 cm on one set of plots (constant swards) and, on the other set, al 4–6 cm rising after June to a target 6–8 cm (rising swards). The heights were achieved by variable stocking. Fertilizer N was applied only to the grass plots at the rate of 150- 180kgN ha-1 annually.
SSH was mainly within the target 4–6 cm, after higher initial heights at turnout in 1988and 1990. Mean heights of the constant swards (April- August) averaged 5·53, 4·43 and 5·04cm in the three years. The rising swards (July-August) increased in height over the constant swards by an average of 0·88, 0·48 and 0·55 cm, in successive years.
Clover content of the herbage mass dry matter in the grass/clover swards increased over each grazing season to average 13·0, 26·5 and 21·2% in the three years, with a high mean stolon density of 130 in m-2 in August 1990. Ryegrass tiller densities in year 3 were 23% higher in the diploid than in the tetraploid swards, which had 43% more than the 10000 tillers m-2 of the tetraploid ryegrass/clover swards.
It is concluded that the combination of a densely stoloniferous small-leaved clover with the open growth habit of a tetraploid ryegrass can achieve swards of high clover content under continuous sheep stocking.  相似文献

The effects of stocking rate and N fertilizer on a mixed sward of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne) and white clover ( Trifolium repens ) set-stocked with sheep were examined. Sward production and composition, and sheep production were studied.
Increasing the stocking rate over the range 25–55 yearling sheep ha−1 reduced herbage accumulation by about 40%, whether or not N fertilizer was applied. Increasing the stocking rate increased the density of ryegrass tillers, but reduced the density of clover stolons and the clover content of the swards. Applications of N fertilizer (200 kg N ha−1 a−1) increased herbage accumulation by about 20% but substantially reduced the clover content.
Liveweight gain per animal and per unit area were greater at the lower stocking rates where the clover content and nutritive value of the diet were greatest. Wool growth per unit area was greater at the higher stocking rates. Applications of 1M fertilizer increased liveweight gain at stocking rates above 25 sheep ha−1, but had no effect on wool production at any stocking rate.
The results demonstrate that a stable and productive grass-clover association was maintained under conditions of set-stocking at around 23 yearling sheep ha−1and that at this stocking rate, which appears to be about the biological optimum, there was no advantage in using N fertilizer.  相似文献

The response of marsh birdsfoot trefoil ( Lotus uliginosus ) to inoculation with appropriate Rhizobium spp. was compared over 2 years. Inoculated and uninoculated seed was sown at 5 kg ha-1 on three soil types, brown earth, peaty podsol and deep peat. Perennial ryegrass cv. Perma was sown at 20 kg ha-1 as a companion species. Plots received either no N or a light starter dressing of 30 kg ha-1 N. Significant benefits from inoculation were recorded for Lotus germination and nodulation, Lotus and non- Lotus herbage DM harvested and Lotus cover on the deep peat, and to a lesser extent on the other soil-types. Due to particularly uneven early establishment, work on the peaty-podsol site was discontinued at an early stage. There was a trend towards depression of Lotus where N had been applied to inoculated plots.  相似文献
