A group of 4863 white veal calves reared on six commercial white veal farms in Ontario were followed through production to describe calf characteristics and production levels. Patterns of morbidity, mortality, and culling were investigated at the farm, room and individual level. The majority of the calves were male Holsteins, with approximately half originating from Ontario. The mean average daily gain for shipped calves over the entire production period was 1.1 kg/day (SE = 0.002). The overall percentage of calves receiving at least one individual treatment was 59%, with an average number of treatment days per calf of 3.3. The majority of calves receiving one or more treatment days were first treated between the fourth and seventh week of production. The mortality rate was 3.7%, and 5.1% of the calves were culled. Pneumonia was the largest single cause of death. Peak death and cull losses occurred during the seventh and eighth week of production.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of difloxacin, a novel fluoroquinolone antibiotic, in calves experimentally infected with Mannheimia haemolytica (formerly Pasteurella haemolytica). ANIMALS: Seventy-two 3-month-old Holstein calves. PROCEDURES: Calves were inoculated with M haemolytica intratracheally; after they developed clinical signs of pneumonic pasteurellosis, they were randomly assigned to 1 of 6 groups (n = 12/group). Calves in each group were treated with 10% difloxacin (2.5 or 5 mg/kg of body weight), 5% difloxacin (2.5 or 5 mg/kg), enrofloxacin (5 mg/kg), or saline (0.9% NaCl) solution (control group), once daily for 5 days, and clinical signs were scored daily. On day 15, calves were euthanatized, and the percentage of diseased lung tissue was calculated. Swab specimens of the lungs were submitted for bacterial culture. RESULTS: Mortality rate and percentage of diseased lung tissue were significantly higher and cure rate and average daily gain were significantly lower for control calves, compared with calves in the treatment groups; however, no significant differences were found among treatment groups. Mannheimia haemolytica was isolated from the lungs of 10 control calves and from at least 2 calves in each of the treatment groups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that difloxacin and enrofloxacin were equally effective for treatment of calves with experimentally induced pneumonic pasteurellosis. However, treatment of infected calves with difloxacin or enrofloxacin may not eliminate the organism.  相似文献

In this 90-day study, 60 male Holstein dairy calves were experimentally infected with Giardia duodenalis. Calves were randomly blocked by weight into treatment (N=30) and placebo (N=30) groups. Beginning on study Day 0, calves in the treatment group were administered an oral dose of 5mg/kg of fenbendazole once daily for three consecutive days. Calves in the placebo group received a daily oral treatment of 5 ml of saline for 3 days. These treatments were repeated on Days 30 and 60 of the study. Fecal samples were collected from calves once per week and examined for the presence of Giardia cysts. Calves were monitored daily for clinical signs of intestinal disease and all episodes of diarrhea recorded. Calves were weighed once per week and total feed intake, on a dry matter basis, was calculated daily. Following each treatment, the number of calves shedding Giardia cysts in the fenbendazole group was reduced (p<0.001) compared to the saline group. Also, calves in the fenbendazole group had fewer cysts (p<0.05) detected in their feces following treatment compared with calves that received saline. Within 2 weeks post treatment, the number of infected animals and fecal Giardia cysts returned to placebo levels. This pattern of reinfection was consistent after every treatment period. Calves receiving fenbendazole had fewer total days with diarrhea (p<0.01) and the average number of days each calf had diarrhea was reduced (p<0.05), compared to the placebo group. There were no differences in mean body weight, average daily gain, or feed intake between the treatment or placebo groups. This study demonstrates that fenbendazole is an effective treatment for giardiosis, resulting in a clinical benefit and reducing the number of infective cysts shed by calves. However, this treatment regime had no impact on production parameters and reinfection occurred rapidly in these calves.  相似文献

Records of Jersey-sired (Jx), Santa Gertrudis-sired (Sx), Charolais-sired (Cx) and straightbred Hereford (H) cows were examined to determine culling rates, birth dates, weaning weights and average daily gains of their first, second and third calves. Culling categories were defined on the basis of number of calves weaned before removal from the herd. Calf performance data were analyzed by cow breed group and cow culling category. A second-degree polynomial model fit the data of all breeds, and accounted for a greater proportion of variation in percentage culled than did the linear model (P less than .05). Total percentage culled through the study were 71, 67, 54 and 53 for the H, Sx, Cx and Jx cows, respectively. Culling rates in the H and Sx cows tended to be higher at earlier ages than in the Cx and Jx cows. Cow-culling category was a significant source of variation only on birth date of first calves. Cows culled after one calf had calves that were born later than cows in the other two categories (P less than .05). Birth date, weaning weight and average daily gain of first calves varied with cow breed in that Jx cows had calves that were born earlier, gained faster and weaned heavier than first calves from the other breed groups (P less than .05). Two field efficacy studies, involving a total of 92 naturally infected, pneumonic veal calves, were conducted to compare the efficacy of the β-lactamase inhibitor sulbactam plus ampicillin to ampicillin alone in the treatment of bacterial pneumonia. Cultures from nasal swabs and lung tissue during the 10 or 11 day studies were predominantly ampicillin-resistant Pasteurella multocida. Ampicillin (6.6 mg/kg) or sulbactam-ampicillin (3.3 mg/kg sulbactam + 6.6 mg/kg ampicillin) was injected intramuscularly once daily for either three days or six days. Sulbactam-ampicillin administered once daily for three or six days resulted in lower (P≤0.05) average body temperature with a concomitant clinical improvement (P≤0.05), and produced numerical advantages and/or statistical improvements over ampicillin in mortality, weight gain, and overall response of calves to treatment. The combined mortality for the two studies in the ampicillin and sulbactam-ampicillin treated groups was 43% and 14%, respectively. We concluded that sulbactam-ampicillin was superior to ampicillin in the treatment of ampicillin-resistant bacterial pneumonia in veal calves.  相似文献

Ninety, seven- to 10-day-old calves were allocated to three groups of 30 and treated daily for seven days with either 100 microg/kg halofuginone hydrobromide or 2.5 mg/kg decoquinate orally or left untreated as controls. The levels of diarrhoea and dehydration were monitored daily for 28 days from the first day of treatment (day 0) and samples of faeces were collected on days 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28, to quantify the excretion of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts. The calves were weighed on days 3 and 28. The treatments had no effect on the levels of diarrhoea or dehydration, the proportions of diarrhoeic calves or the proportions of calves shedding oocysts. However, unlike decoquinate, halofuginone significantly reduced the excretion of oocysts on day 7 (P<0.0001), and decoquinate increased the average daily weight gain of the calves (P=0.049).  相似文献

A study was conducted in a commercial feedlot in western Canada to evaluate the impact of treatment with ivermectin versus a topical organophosphate on growth rate and feed efficiency in calves entering a feedlot at an average 275 kg liveweight.

A total of 9527 head of cattle was used. Variables measured included average daily gain, average days occupation, and feed conversion.

Ivermectin treated animals gained an average 0.08 kg per day more than those treated with topical organophosphate. In addition, they required an average 0.23 kg less feed/kg gain. Based on an average 227 kg of gain, this would result in 11 fewer days occupation and 52.3 kg less feed for ivermectin treated animals. This equaled a net benefit of $7.04 per head over treatment costs for ivermectin treatment versus topical organophosphate.

The purpose of this research was to establish the influence of 3 j Cx cellulase applied per gram of COT concentrate mixture, fed in combination with a milk diet acidified by formic acid to the value of pH 4.6, on calf growth performance in one metabolism and two field experiments. In the metabolism experiment two groups of calves, with six animals in each, were fed acidified whole milk, which was diluted stage by stage till weaning at 60 days of age. The average live weight gain in the control at the end of the milk feeding period, i.e. from 14 to 60 days of age, was 29.90 kg. This corresponds to a daily live weight gain of 0.650 g. The total live weight gain of male calves in the experimental group was 29.30 kg, corresponding to a daily live weight gain of 0.638 g (Tab. I). Tab. II shows the average feed and nutrient intakes per kg live weight gain. The calves which received the enzyme supplement tend to have the higher feed conversion rate. During the forage feeding period, i.e. from 61 to 90 days of age, the average daily live weight gains were 1.10 kg and 0.980 kg in the control and experimental groups, respectively (Tab. III). The average live weight of 90 days old male calves was 107.70 kg and 103.90 kg in the control and experimental groups, respectively. 目的 为了解决奶牛养殖企业在降低断奶犊牛培育饲料成本上存在的难点。方法 本试验在天津嘉立荷牧业集团有限公司断奶犊牛饲养管理技术水平上,对犊牛前期配合料进行营养水平调整,研发新的犊牛后期配合料,并对比两种犊牛颗粒料在断奶犊牛中的饲喂效果。结果 饲喂两种犊牛颗粒料,断奶犊牛日粮总采食量、日增重、日增体高、日增体斜长和日增腹围无差异(P>0.05),其中平均日粮总采食量分别为5.70 kg和5.90 kg,平均日增重分别为1.20 kg和1.22 kg,平均日增体高分别为0.23 cm和0.22 cm,平均日增体斜长分别为0.27 cm和0.28 cm,平均日增腹围分别为0.43 cm和0.44 cm;饲喂了犊牛后期配合料,断奶犊牛腹泻率降低了0.20 个百分点,日粮采食成本可节约133.98 元/头·d;日增重成本可节约24.36元/头·d。结论 犊牛后期配合料既能降低断奶犊牛培育的饲养成本,又能满足断奶犊牛生长发育营养需要。  相似文献

The effect of restricted suckling on milk yield and composition, udder health, and postpartum anoestrus in dairy cows in pasture-based systems, was studied in 32 Holstein multiparous cows and their calves. At calving, each cow–calf pair was randomly assigned to one of two treatments: restricted suckling (RS) of the cows by her own or another calf, twice daily for 30 min or artificial rearing (AR) of the calves with milk obtained from the bulk tank, offered twice a day in buckets. Treatments were applied until week 8 after calving. The diet of the cows consisted of direct grazing in improved pastures, corn silage and a commercial concentrate which was offered at milking. Milk production and composition, udder health, body condition score of the cows, body weight and milk intake of the calves were measured weekly, and the first postpartum ovulation was determined three times a week by ovarian ultrasonography. Cows with RS management had a lower machine-milked milk yield (17.9 vs. 24.8 kg/d), a lower fat percentage (3.21 vs. 4.11%) and 4% fat-corrected milk yield (16.2 vs. 25.7 kg/d), and also a lower average milk flow (1.35 vs. 1.76 kg/min) than cows in the AR treatment. There was no effect of treatment on milk protein percentage or udder health as measured by milk electrical conductivity. The interval from calving to first postpartum ovulation was shorter in the AR cows than in the RS cows (18.5 vs. 21.8 days). The RS calves consumed more milk (7.2 vs. 5.4 kg/d), gained more body weight (0.813 vs. 0.656 kg/d), and had a higher body weight at weaning (84.3 vs. 73.3 kg) than AR calves. Restricted suckling of grazing dairy cows had a negative effect on machine-milked milk yield, fat percentage and 4% fat-corrected milk yield, but had no effect on udder health or on improved weight gain and body weight at weaning of the calves.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the effect of feeding high milk volumes on the growth rate, health and cross-sucking behaviour in group-fed Jersey calves. Three-day-old heifers (n = 120) in a seasonal calving dairy herd were randomly assigned to one of 6 treatment groups. Three groups received high milk volumes (HMV), consisting of ad libitum milk or milk replacer feeding twice a day, while 3 groups received restricted milk volumes (RMV), consisting of 2 l twice daily, during the pre-weaning period. After a pre-weaning period during which feeding was reduced to once daily, all calves were weaned at 42 days and monitored until 60 days of age. Adjusting for birth mass, birth date, dam parity and sire, average daily mass gain (ADG), both pre-weaning (days 0-42) and overall (days 0-60), was higher in HMV than in RMV calves (P < 0.001). After weaning, growth rates showed no differences and at 60 days of age the HMV calves maintained a 6.74 kg advantage in mean body mass (P < 0.001). The mean intake of dry starter feed was higher in RMV than in HMV calves. Overall feed conversion rate of HMV calves was 9.6 % better than RMV calves. However, the variable cost per kg mass gain was 12 % higher for HMV calves. In the RMV groups 75 % of calves showed cross-sucking behaviour pre-weaning and 18 % post-weaning, whereas in HMV calves the proportions were 2 % and 7 %, respectively. There was no significant effect of milk volume on the incidence of diarrhoea. We conclude that the feeding of high volumes of milk to Jersey calves has a positive effect on growth rate, without compromising health or reducing solid feed intake after weaning. However, the higher cost of such a feeding system may limit its implementation.  相似文献

Lactating Hereford and Hereford X Angus cows, 2 to 6 yr old, and their calves were used in two trials to study the effects of energy intake on the postpartum interval (PPI) and the adequacy of the cow's milk production for calf growth. In trial 1, 23 cows were fed either 120 (high energy, HE) or 100% (adequate energy, AE) of National Research Council energy recommendations. Cow weights, calf weights and milk production were determined 1 wk after calving and every 2 wk until 17 wk postcalving . One-half of the calves received creep feed from the start of the study, whereas the other half did not receive creep feed until their average daily gain was below .23 kg/d. In trail 2, 19 cows were fed energy levels of 100 (AE) or 85% (low energy, LE). Estimated percentage body fat ( EPBF ) was estimated twice during the study; other variables were determined as in trial 1. In trial 1, the HE cows gained more weight (P less than .01) and produced more milk (P less than .01). In trial 2, the AE cows gained more weight (P less than .01) and produced calves 17 kg heavier (P less than .01) at the end of the study than did the LE cows. Milk production was not influenced by energy treatment (P greater than .2). This paper discusses the use of resorcylic acid lactone as an anabolic agent in cattle. When given to finishing steers it increases daily gain by 10–18% and final carcass weight by 6–10 kg. When given to finishing steers in conjunction with trenbolone acetate, there is an additive response in terms of growth rate and carcass weight. The final carcass weights were 310±2.1, 319±2.0, 316±2.0 and 328±2.0 for unimplanted steers, or steers implanted with resorcylic acid lactone or trenbolone acetate or a combination of both compounds respectively. Responses in finishing steers in spring at pasture were similar to responses obtained in winter. In male calves, average liveweights at the end of a 134-day experimental period were 123, 142 and 140 kg (SE ± 5.4 kg) respectively for control calves or calves given resorcylic acid lactone or a combination of resorcylic acid lactone and trenbolone acetate. After a further 134 days grazing together these calves weighed 271, 294 and 297 kg (SE ± 7.9 kg) respectively, indicating that the extra gain was retained once the implants ceased to be effective. No significant effect on daily gain or carcass weight of heifers was obtained in our trials with resorcylic acid lactone. Results from feed efficiency trial indicated resorcylic acid lactone significantly increased feed efficiency. Therefore, resorcylic acid is an effective growth promoter in male castrate cattle.  相似文献

Data collected from 1993 to 2006 at the Animal Research Institute of Ghana was used to compare the performance of Sanga and Friesian-Sanga crossbred calves on natural pasture. Performance traits analyzed were birth weight (BWT), weaning weight adjusted to 210 days (WW7), preweaning average daily gain to 210 days (ADG 1), weight at 12 months adjusted to 365 days (W12), weight at 18 months adjusted to 540 days (W18) and postweaning average daily gain (ADG 2, from weaning to 540 days). Effects in the model describing these traits were breed, season, sex and first-order interactions between these effects. With the exception of heavier birth weight of Friesian-Sanga crossbred calves (19.98 kg vs. 19.18 kg), body weights of Sangas at weaning, 12 months and 18 months exceeded those of the Friesian-Sanga crossbred calves by 3.76 kg, 35.06 kg and 46.24 kg respectively. The Sangas were also superior in preweaning average daily gain (0.35 kg/day vs. 0.26 kg/day) and postweaning average daily gain (0.28 kg/day vs. 0.21 kg/day). There was a tendency of increasing weight difference between the two breeds with advancing age. It was suggested that improved nutrition such as supplementary feeding would be necessary for crossbreds to express their potential for growth.  相似文献

The objective of present study was to evaluate the growth potential of Sahiwal calves for veal production on whole milk or whole milk and milk replacer combined in a ratio of 50:50 (MMR). For this purpose, 48 Sahiwal calves (both male and female) were assigned to four dietary treatments having 12 animals/treatment. Calves in the treatments A and B were offered whole milk at 15 or 20 % of their body weight (BW), respectively, up to day 84 adjusted on weekly basis. The calves in treatments C and D received the same amount of milk as in treatments A and B until day 21, respectively, after which 50 % of the milk offered was replaced with a blend of chickpea (Cicer arietinum) flour and vegetable (corn) oil mixed in water (MR) until day 84. The constituted MR had 3.1, 2.8, and 14.3 %, CP, EE, and DM, respectively. The growth and intake data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis, with MIXED Procedures of SAS in a 2?×?2 factorial design. The two factors were feeding level and feeding source. Calves offered whole milk grew faster (P?<?0.05) and had greater weaning weights (P?<?0.05) than those offered MMR (606.4?±?18.1 vs 331.3?±?18.1 g/day and 70.4?±?1.5 vs 47.8?±?1.5 kg, respectively). Greatest daily BW gain (656?±?26 g/day) and weaning weight (74.6?±?2.1 kg) were observed in calves given treatment B while the lowest production cost/kg of BW gain (≈US$3.6?±?0.2) was observed in calves given treatment A. The daily BW gain of calves fed milk ad libitum was 716?±?40 and 836?±?40 g/day, during 5–8 and 9–12 weeks, respectively. The number of days calves exhibited scours was higher in calves offered MMR than those offered whole milk. Replacement of 50 % milk with a blend of chickpea flour and vegetable oil, as an alternative to milk replacer, did not support growth equivalent to whole milk and was not effective in reducing feeding cost during the weaning period. Sahiwal calves may have promise for being raised for veal production under tropical environments.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether parenteral administration of selenium (Se) to calves and the amount of forage and protein provided to their dams affects unadjusted body weight, adjusted 205-day body weight, and average daily gain (ADG) of suckling beef calves. DESIGN: Randomized controlled field trial. ANIMALS: 151 Hereford-Angus crossbred beef calves. PROCEDURE: Newborn calves, randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups, served as untreated controls (n = 49) or were given Se (0.05 mg/kg [0.023 mg/lb] of body weight, SC) once within 2 days of birth (55) or within 2 days of birth and on days 70, 114, and 149 (47). Until day 149, cow-calf pairs were pastured in fields in which the amount of available forage was high or low and supplemental protein was or was not provided. Calves were weighed on days 1, 70, 149, and 209. On days 160 and 209, blood was obtained from 33 calves for measurements of Se concentration. RESULTS: Mean consumption of supplemental protein was 0.65 kg/dam/d. Between days 1 and 70, calves that received the first of 4 multiple injections of Se had significantly greater ADG than control calves. Average daily gain for calves given only 1 injection was not significantly different from controls. Between days 70 and 149, ADG of calves increased with dietary supplementation of protein to their dams. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Strategic administration of Se to calves and dietary supplementation of protein to their dams may result in greater ADG in suckling beef calves during specific time intervals.  相似文献

选用三月龄断奶荷斯坦犊牛30头,将其等分为三组,对照组为基础日粮,烟酸组和烟酸铬组分别在基础日粮中添加400 mg/kg的烟酸和6.4 mg/kg的烟酸铬.结果表明:烟酸和烟酸铬在前10 d对犊牛的增重影响不明显(P>0.05);20~30 d,烟酸组和烟酸铬组的平均日增重比对照组分别提高5%和27.6%;30~40 d,烟酸组和烟酸铬组的平均日增重比对照组分别提高12.8%和18.11%;而最后一个阶段,烟酸组和烟酸铬组的平均日增重比对照组分别提高8.9%和7.45%.试验期间,烟酸铬组与对照组相比提高T3、T4、生长激素、胰高血糖素水平分别为25.68%(P<0.05)、17.31%、6.73%、9.03%;烟酸组与对照组相比提高T3、T4水平分别为11.5%、12.7%.  相似文献
