Strategic application of an anthelmintic was tested during the 1982 grazing season as part of the continued study of the epidemiology of beef cattle parasitism in central Missouri. Forty Hereford and Hereford X Simmental cow/calf pairs were assigned to 2 treatment groups. The 20 cow/calf pairs in group 1 were nonmedicated controls. After calving in mid-March, the 20 cows in group 2 were drenched with a 10% suspension of the anthelmintic fenbendazole (10 mg/kg of body weight). Ten cow/calf pairs were placed on each of four 20-acre fescue or orchard grass pastures in mid-May. Cows and calves in treatment group 2 were drenched with the 10% fenbendazole suspension (5 mg/kg) in mid-July. Body weights and fecal specimens were obtained monthly. Nematode egg counts in cow and calf fecal specimens collected monthly were significantly (P less than 0.05) lower in treatment group 2 than in treatment group 1. Numbers of larvae cultured for speciation revealed that Ostertagia ostertagi was the predominant nematode species. Developmental arrest of O ostertagi was found to be significantly (P less than 0.05) greater than zero from mid-May to mid-July. An important significant difference (P less than 0.01) was shown in body weights of calves, with the calves in treatment group 2 having a higher mean weight gain of 22.5 kg in adjusted 205-day weaning weights, and a higher mean daily gain of 0.11 kg. Weight maintenance of cows was not affected significantly by anthelmintic treatment. Effect of ivermectin on performance of beef cattle on Georgia pastures   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A total of 469 cows and calves from 2 herds, each on 6 pastures, was used to evaluate the anthelmintic efficacy and animal-performance benefits of ivermectin given subcutaneously at a dosage of 200 micrograms/kg to nursing beef calves and their dams during a grazing season. Pastures were paired across the 2 herds. Three pasture groups from 1 herd were randomly assigned to either a nonmedicated control or to a medicated group. Treatment assignments were reversed in the other herd. The control groups comprised 110 cows and 108 calves, whereas 127 cows and 124 calves were treated with ivermectin (200 micrograms/kg). The cows were treated once, in late spring, and the calves were treated twice, once in late spring and again in midsummer. Cattle from one herd were weighed on days - 12, 21, 49, 77 (day of 2nd treatment for calves), and 105, and the other herd was weighed on days - 6, 23, 57, 86 (day of 2nd treatment for calves), and 113. Rectal fecal samples for nematode egg counts were obtained from approximately 25% of the cattle in each pasture on weighing days; usually, the same cattle were sampled each time. Calves treated with ivermectin gained (P less than 0.05) more weight than control calves up to the 2nd treatment date and up to the termination of the study. There was no significant difference between treated and control cows, with regard to weight gain over either interval. Treated calves had fewer positive fecal egg counts (P less than 0.01) and passed fewer eggs (P less than 0.05) after both treatments than did control calves. There were no differences in either number of eggs or number of negative cows between treatment groups. Adverse reactions attributable to treatment were not seen.  相似文献

The efficacy of the morantel sustained release bolus (MSRB) in controlling gastrointestinal parasitism in beef cattle was assessed during the 1982 spring-autumn grazing season. Forty-eight cows and their calves were allotted to three equal groups. One group (T-1) served as a nonmedicated control group. One MSRB was administered to each calf of the T-2 group, and to each cow and calf of the T-3 group at the beginning of the study. The efficacy of the bolus was assessed by comparison of weight gain performance and parasitological data (fecal worm egg counts, herbage larval counts, worm counts from tracer and principal trial calves, and plasma pepsinogen level determinations). Though not statistically significant, treated calves from Group T-2 had a numerical mean weight gain advantage of 2.6 kg, and those from Group T-3 of 4.7 kg, over control calves. Average daily gains (ADG) for the three groups of calves were 0.69, 0.72, and 0.73 kg, respectively. Untreated cows from Group T-2 and treated cows from Group T-3 outperformed the control cows by 12.3 and 7.5 kg, respectively. Fecal worm egg counts from both groups of treated calves were significantly (P less than 0.01) lower than counts from control calves during the entire 169-day trial; notably, egg counts were reduced by 99% 28 days after MSRB administration to both groups of calves. There were no significant differences in the number of eggs counted from the three groups of cows, probably because of the very low numbers of eggs encountered. Mean total worm burdens of principal calves (six per group) necropsied at trial termination indicated a 91% (P less than 0.01) reduction in Group T-2 and an 87% reduction (P less than 0.01) in Group T-3. Worm-free tracer calves were introduced onto pastures every 28 days to monitor availability of infective larvae. The mean number of worms recovered at necropsy from tracer calves that grazed with control cattle increased as the season progressed. However, the numbers of parasites recovered each month from mid-August through mid-October from tracers that grazed pastures with treated cattle were lower (P less than 0.05) than those levels displayed at trial initiation. The efficacy of the morantel sustained release bolus (MSRB) in reducing gastrointestinal parasitism in first season grazing calves was evaluated during the summer--autumn grazing seasons of 1982 and 1983 in western Oregon. Each of 38 calves (1982) and 40 calves (1983) were randomly assigned to either control or treatment groups which were given MSRB on the day of turnout onto pasture. Mean worm burdens from tracer calves grazed with treated animals in 1982 and 1983 showed overall reductions of 86.4% (P greater than 0.05) and 84.3% (P less than 0.01), respectively, compared to tracers grazed with controls. Ostertagia ostertagi, Cooperia oncophora and Nematodirus helvetianus were the primary nematodes collected at necropsy. Twelve full-season 1982 tracer animals (6 treated and 6 control) indicated an 88.1% (P less than 0.05) overall reduction in mean worm burdens. Mean fecal worm egg per gram (EPG) counts of treated animals reflected a reduction of 69% (P less than 0.05) in 1982 and 90% (P less than 0.05) in 1983. Autumn inhibition of O. ostertagi was observed. In the 1982 trial the control animals showed a slight mean weight gain advantage over the treated group from Day 84 until Day 160 (trial termination) when the mean difference was 7.9 kg. The final mean weight gain advantage of treated animals in 1983 was 13.5 kg (P less than 0.05). These trials demonstrated that the MSRB was an effective anthelmintic for reducing gastrointestinal parasitism in grazing calves and for decreasing pasture larval contamination.  相似文献

The efficacy of a treatment schedule using ivermectin, given subcutaneously at the rate of 200 micrograms kg-1, to control gastrointestinal parasitism and its effect on liveweight gains was assessed. Two herds with a total of 466 Hereford X Brangus cow/calf pairs were used. Each herd was on six pasture plots of comparable size, stocking rate, and quality and quantity of forage. Pasture groups were paired across the two herds. Pasture groups from one herd were randomly assigned to nonmedicated control and the other three to ivermectin treatment. Treatment assignments per pasture group were reversed in the other herd. The control group contained 118 cows and 112 calves and the medicated group 121 cows and 115 calves. Cows were treated in early July and the calves in late July or early August. Cattle from one herd were weighed on Days -28, 0 (day of cow treatment), 30 (day of calf treatment), 58, and 86, while the other herd was weighed on Days -29, 0 (day of cow treatment), 27 (day of calf treatment), 61, and 89. Day 0 was not the same calendar day for the two herds. Fecal samples for parasite egg counts were obtained from the rectum on weight days from five cows and six calves from each pasture; in most cases the same cattle were sampled each time. Persistent anthelmintic efficacy of topical formulations (all at a dosage of 500 microg/kg) of doramectin (DOR), ivermectin (IVM), eprinomectin (EPR) and moxidectin (MOX), in comparison with untreated control cattle (CONT), was observed in stocker beef calves during a 112-day winter-spring grazing trial. Five groups of 15 calves per group were grazed on 15 separate 2 ha pastures following random assignment of animals to specific pastures and then to treatment groups. All of the 5 treatments were represented in each of the 15 pastures. All cattle were weighed on study Days 1, 0, 28, 56, 84, 111 and 112. Fecal samples for nematode egg counts were collected on Days 7, 0, at 7 day intervals through Day 56 and at 14 day intervals to Day 1 12. Pooled group fecal cultures for determining generic composition of nematode infections were prepared at 14 day intervals throughout the study. As based on fecal egg counts, anthelmintic activity of EPR and MOX was greater (p < 0.05) than values for IVM or CONT through Day 28. Activity of DOR was greater (p < 0.05) than that of IVM on Days 7 and 14 only. Although significance levels varied little among treated groups from Day 42 to the end of the study, egg counts and percent reduction values of EPR and MOX remained consistently lower numerically than egg counts and higher than reduction values respectively, of DOR and IVM through Day 70. From Day 70 on, IVM counts were numerically, but not significantly higher than values of CONT. Based on larval culture, Cooperia predominated from Day 0 through 28 and again from Days 70 to 98; Ostertagia was second in prevalence with highest percentages, which exceeded those of Cooperia, between Days 42 and 70. Bodyweights of all treated groups, with exception of IVM, were always significantly greater (p < 0.05) than weights of CONT. Weights of IVM were numerically greater, but not significantly greater than CONT only on Days 84 and 112. From Day 56 on, there were no significant differences between weights of DOR, EPR and MOX, however, numerical values for MOX were consistently higher than values for the other two. Final average total bodyweight gains were: 153.7 kg for MOX, 148.5 kg for EPR, 146.9 kg for DOR, 139.7 kg for IVM and 127.7 kg for CONT.  相似文献

On 81 farms blood samples were taken from adult dairy cattle, on pasture in October 1986 and after stabling in December 1986, to measure antibody titres against the nematodes Dictyocaulus viviparus, Cooperia spp. and Ostertagia spp., and the trematode Fasciola hepatica, and serum pepsinogen values. Faecal samples, collected in October, were examined to confirm the presence of parasites by means of egg counts and larval identifications. From December until the end of the stabling period, dry cows were either treated with albendazole or left untreated in alternate sequence of calving date. Treated cows produced 132.9 kg milk per cow per lactation more than untreated cows (P less than 0.01). Fat and protein percentage were not significantly influenced by anthelmintic treatment. The mean herd milk yield response to treatment varied from -889 to +1231 kg milk per cow per lactation. There was a significant between-herd variation in antibody titres against nematodes and in pepsinogen values. However no significant correlations between these parameters and the mean herd milk yield response to treatment were found.  相似文献

The epidemiology and the effects of nematode infections on cow-calf systems were followed from 3 weeks before calving to 7 months afterwards. Two groups, each of 15 cow-calf pairs grazed on separate lucerne pastures. Group I (GI) were treated monthly with oxfendazole (4.5 mg kg-1), cows being dosed from calving and calves starting 45 days later. Animals in Group II (GII) were not treated. The egg output of the cows was very low. An increase was recorded 2 months after parturition, consisting mainly of Ostertagia spp. The egg output and worm burdens of calves remained low until late summer and reached a peak in autumn. Ostertagia, Cooperia and Haemonchus were the main genera recovered from slaughtered calves. The pasture contamination and tracer calf worm counts remained consistently low until autumn when they began to increase. Inhibited early fourth stage larvae of Ostertagia were recovered during spring. After calving, the live-weight gains (LWG) of treated GI cows were significantly higher (P less than 0.004) than those of GII cows, whereas the LWG of GI calves were significantly higher during December (P less than 0.037) and March (P less than 0.029) than those of GII calves. There were significant (P less than 0.04) cumulative LWG responses between GI and GII calves with no differences in cow cumulative LWG at the end of the trial. For spring-born calves, these results suggest that strategic deworming programs in cow-calf systems may produce benefits.  相似文献

Albendazole (methyl 5-propylthio-1 H-benzimidazol-2-yl carbamate) was used as an anthelmintic in a 3-yr study involving 578 beef cows and 438 nursing calves. Infection levels for nematodes, coccidia, and tapeworm were relatively low throughout the 3-yr period. Eggs per gram of feces in cows and calves were lower (P less than .01) 2 wk posttreatment but were not different 5 mo later, when calves were weaned. Cow weight gain, rate and time of conception, and adjusted calf weaning weights were not affected significantly by deworming of either cows or calves. Level of nematode infection measured as eggs per gram of feces was higher (P less than .01) in younger cows than in mature cows. Although deworming with Albendazole lowered (P less than .01) nematode infection levels, no responses were observed in cow or calf performance.  相似文献

Five years of data were collected on 124 Brangus-type cows to evaluate weaning calves at 8.5 or 10.5 mo of age and winter supplementation of the brood cow with 2.25 kg of molasses daily. Cows with calves weaned at 10.5 mg of age gained 14 kg less weight (P less than .01) during the late nursing period than did cows from which calves were earlier weaned. Age of calf at weaning had no effect on cow reproduction, but calves weaned at 10.5 mo were 2 to 3 d younger (P less than .06) and 5.3 kg lighter (P less than .05) at 8.5 mo of age. During the last 2 mo of nursing, calves weaned at 10.5 mo of age gained 37.2 kg and had a 31.9-kg heavier weaning weight than calves weaned at 8.5 mo of age. Molasses supplementation resulted in differences (P less than .01) in cow weight changes. Cows fed molasses had calving percentages 5 to 7 units higher (P less than .30) than cows not fed molasses. Feeding cows molasses for 145 d throughout the calving and breeding season increased calf weaning weight 7.7 (P less than .02) and 11.2 (P less than .03) kg, respectively, at 8.5 and 10.5 mo of age over the nonsupplemented controls.  相似文献

SUMMARY The effects of anthelmintic treatment on the milk production of cows subjected to contrasting nutritional conditions before and after calving were determined. Half of the cows in each of 2 management treatments were treated with 3.75 grams of fenbendazole on the second day after calving and twice more at weekly intervals. Treated and control cows were grazed together for the entire lactation. Treated cows produced 8% more (P<0.05) milk over the 20 weeks lactation than the untreated cows. One third of the total lactation response to anthelmintic treatment occurred during weeks 5 to 10 of lactation. The observed responses occurred despite equal larval challenge to treated and control cows and therefore the responses obtained are discussed in the context of a reduction in the worm burden.  相似文献

The efficacy of fenbendazole granules against Toxocara canis in naturally infected greyhounds housed in contaminated environments was evaluated. Eight pens, each containing three to seven greyhounds, 3-12 months of age, were randomly allotted into two treatment groups. Greyhounds in Group 1 were treated with fenbendazole granules mixed in their feed at 50 mg/kg/day for 3 consecutive days once a month for 4 months. Greyhounds in Group 2 were treated with pyrantel pamoate suspension at 5.0 mg/kg per os once a month for 4 months. Quantitative fecal examinations were performed on days 0, 10 and then on the first day of each monthly treatment. Greyhounds administered fenbendazole had fecal egg count reductions (FECRs) of 95.8 and 99.8% at 10 and 31 days following initial treatment, respectively. Greyhounds administered pyrantel pamoate had FECRs of 85.8 and 88.3% at 10 and 31 days after the first treatment, respectively. T. canis fecal egg counts conducted from Day 31 through Day 128 were significant lower in those greyhounds administered fenbendazole as compared to greyhounds administered pyrantel pamoate. Fenbendazole produced FECRs in greyhounds from Day 31 through Day 128 by 96.8-99.8%. Pyrantel pamoate reduced fecal egg counts during the same time period 71.4-98.3%.  相似文献

Trials with fenbendazole (Panacur, Hoechst India Ltd) were carried out on two commercial farms in subtropical western India to study the response and economics of nematode treatment in adult dairy cows. Milk yield, lactation length, time to first oestrus and worm egg output were monitored in treated and control groups. Treatment reduced the egg count considerably. Treated cows produced 142 litres more milk over 100 days (p<0.05), with extension of lactation length and advancement of time to first oestrus. The economic gain in terms of milk yield far outweighed the cost of anthelmintic used.  相似文献

Sub-clinical parasitism in spring-born single suckled beef calves was investigated from the middle of their first grazing season until weaning or housing later the same year. The study was conducted on four beef suckler herds in southern England over a 3-year period and involved a total of 334 spring-born beef suckler calves and their dams. The animals were grazed extensively on pastures naturally infected with nematode larvae. At the start of each period of observation, faecal samples were taken from calves and cows and subjected to routine worm egg counts; calves were re-sampled at the end of the grazing season.In July in each year and at each location the calves were ranked by initial weight within sex, paired according to rank and randomly allocated to either an untreated control group or a group in which the calves were each treated with an ivermectin sustained-release (SR) bolus. The calves in both trial groups, and their dams, were grazed together until weaning or housing. The calves were weighed at the initial allocation and at the end of the study. The adult cows were not treated with any anthelmintic during the study.The faecal nematode egg counts (FECs) conducted in July showed that the suckler cows were excreting worm eggs at low concentrations: range 0-100 eggs per gram (epg), with one individual count of 500epg, 88% of the cows sampled had counts of <50epg. Similarly, the counts from the calf samples were fairly low in July: range 0-250epg, 73% of the calves sampled had counts of <50epg. By the end of the grazing season, the faecal samples from the untreated control calves showed higher values: range 0-650epg, with only 58% having an epg of <50.The average rate of daily liveweight gain in the untreated heifer calves was 0.79kg per day, the corresponding figure for the heifer calves treated with the ivermectin SR bolus in mid-summer was 0.88kg per day; the difference of 90g per day was significantly different (P=0.0118). The average rate of daily liveweight gain in the untreated bull calves was 0.91kg per day, the corresponding figure for the bull calves treated with the ivermectin SR bolus in mid-summer was 1.01kg per day; the difference was significantly different (P=0.0169).  相似文献

Three anthelmintic pastes were compared in terms of their ability to suppress the output of parasite eggs in the faeces of 108 grazing horses at four sites in Britain; the horses were treated once with either ivermectin, fenbendazole or pyrantel. At each site, the horses grazed together throughout the trials which took place during the summers of 1985 and 1986. The median periods before parasite eggs reappeared in faeces were 70 days for ivermectin, 14 days for fenbendazole and 39 days for pyrantel embonate. Geometric mean faecal egg counts in the groups treated with ivermectin and pyrantel were significantly less (P less than 0.05) than in the fenbendazole group on days 21, 28, 35 and 42 after treatment. On days 49, 56, 63 and 70 the mean egg counts in the ivermectin group were significantly lower (P less than 0.05) than those in either of the other groups. The results indicated that in order to ensure minimal contamination of pastures, grazing horses treated with ivermectin paste would have required a second treatment approximately 10 weeks after the first, and to achieve similar control with fenbendazole or pyrantel embonate, a second treatment would have been required after approximately two weeks and six weeks, respectively.  相似文献

The direct and indirect anthelmintic efficacies of the morantel sustained-release bolus given to calves were assessed in a 154-day controlled field trial. A permanent calf pasture (divided into 2 lots) and naturally parasitized calves were used. The medicated calves were given the bolus at the time they were placed on the pastures. Control calves did not receive anthelmintic therapy. The effectiveness of the bolus to control parasitic gastroenteritis was determined by monitoring various parasitologic determinants. The treated calves had significantly (P less than 0.01) reduced numbers of fecal nematode eggs for every posttreatment sampling period when compared with the control calves. Tracer calves, used periodically during the study to indicate pasture larval infectivities, had equivalent worm burdens at the beginning of the trial (treated vs control pasture). Tracer calves, added later in the study to the lot with treated calves, harbored 83% to 94% fewer nematodes than did their counterparts in the lot with the controls. Plasma pepsinogen concentrations, reflective of abomasal worm burden size and/or activity, were significantly higher (P less than 0.01) in the control than in the treated calves from day 54 until trial termination. At trial termination, the treated calves weighed an average of 27.8 kg more and harbored 80.9% fewer nematodes than the control calves. The morantel sustained-release bolus is an anthelmintic delivery device that has therapeutic and prophylactic antinematode activities. To achieve its optimum performance, the bolus must be used so that the epizootiologic patterns of the predominate parasitic nematodes are effectively disrupted. The results of a series of trials conducted on 47 seasonal supply dairy farms in the southern North Island of New Zealand, which indicated a statistically significant overall production response of 2.24 kg milkfat/cow/lactation following a 2-treatment dry-cow anthelmintic drenching programme (Bisset et al., 1987), were subjected to further analyses in an attempt to identify any management factors or herd characteristics which may have influenced the levels of production response to treatment in individual herds. The management factors examined included calf drenching practices, types of grazing system, mean pre-calving condition of the herds, and 'nutritional status' of the herds over the milking season. The influence of herd quality, herd size and geographical location were also examined. Considered separately, only calf drenching practice had a significant influence on the level of herd response to treatment. Increases in milkfat production/cow due to the treatment programme were significantly greater (P less than 0.05, t-test) on farms where calves had received a minimal number of drench treatments (less than or equal to 2) between weaning and the end of March (mid-autumn) (+5.32 kg/cow/lactation, P less than 0.01) (= 108.2 l milk), than on farms where calves had received regular 3-4 weekly treatments over the same period (+0.42 kg/cow/lactation, N.S.) While none of the other factors, considered in isolation, appeared to significantly influence the production response of herds, observations on possible interactive effects suggested that the grazing system employed was probably of importance in so far as it determined the level of exposure of cows to calf-contaminated pasture. Thus, the greatest mean response to the treatment programme occurred in herds where cows were overwintered on areas grazed during the milking season by calves which had received less than or equal to 2 drench treatments from weaning until the end of March (+5.95 kg milkfat/cow/lactation, P less than 0.01).  相似文献

Two trials were conducted to evaluate the effect of fenbendazole molasses supplement block treatment on weight gain of weanling beef calves. An initial (November) oral fenbendazole (5 mg kg-1) treatment was administered to all animals in both trials. In Trials 1 and 2, respectively, two fenbendazole molasses supplement block treatments were administered 6 (6.4 mg kg-1) and 16 (7.0 mg kg-1) weeks later and 7 (3.4 mg kg-1) and 14 (3.8 mg kg-1) weeks later. During the treatment periods, calves were maintained on dormant bermuda grass pasture, supplemented with hay and protein/mineral blocks. The first block treatment was administered approximately midway through the supplement period to suppress the infection level when nutrition was marginal. The second treatment was administered just prior to ryegrass grazing. Trial 1 and 2 treatments resulted in reducing the infection level, as indicated by reduced mean fecal egg counts. Treatment group mean fecal egg counts remained lower than control group mean counts throughout each trial. In Trial 1, the treatment group gained 29.5 kg more than the control group. In Trial 2, the control group gained 15.5 kg more than the treatment group. Fecal egg count data indicated that the infection level during Trial 1 was higher than during Trial 2. The effects of calf age and dam breeds of different milk yield potential on turnover of energy and nutrients were followed in 16 Simmental and 16 Angus beef cows with Angus-sired calves. Calf ages investigated were 1, 4, 7, and 10 mo. The forage offered for ad libitum access consisted of hay for the calves and of a constant mixture of grass silage, meadow hay, and straw (1:0.7:0.3 on a DM basis) for the cows. Calves of 10 mo of age received an additional 2.6 kg DM/d of crushed barley. The animals were kept in groups of four cows and four calves except in the respiration chambers, where only one cow (tethered) and her calf (loose) were grouped together. Indicator techniques were applied to obtain individual data on feces and urine volumes during group housing. In the Simmental cows, heavier on average by 22 kg, voluntary DMI was higher than in the Angus cows (14.0 vs 12.3 kg/d). In calves, DMI from supplementary feeds was 1.6, 3.9, and 6.3 kg/d, on average, at 4, 7, and 10 mo of age, respectively. Dam breed had no significant effect on DMI and ADG of calves and on BW changes of cows. System retention of energy, N, and P showed a curvilinear development with calf age. System energy expenditure, which linearly increased with calf age, was higher with Simmental than with Angus dams (11%), even when adjusted for metabolic BW (8%). Energy loss through methane linearly increased with NDF intake and, consequently, with calf age from 18 to 30 MJ/d (446 to 751 L/d) for cows and calves together. Similarly, fecal and urinary N excretion and fecal P excretion steadily increased with calf age. In calves, the easily volatile N percentage of manure N rapidly decreased from very high levels in young calves. The resulting changes in inclination to gaseous N loss during manure storage for 8 wk were more than compensated by alterations in N intake of the calves, resulting in an increased total system N loss with progressing lactation. Overall, the present results indicate a difference between Angus and Simmental in efficiency of nutrient and energy utilization that might be explained by the difference in amount of delivery of nutrients to the calves via milk vs forage. Suggestions are made as to how the emissions of N, P, and methane, which were excessive in relation to productivity, could be reduced by nutritional means.  相似文献

Effects of seven breeds of cow's sire and 12 breeds of cow's maternal grandsire on preweaning performance of crossbred cows and their calves were examined in data from two experiments conducted at the Roman L. Hruska U.S. Mean Animal Research Center. Data included 1,836 records over three to five parities for 516 cows by 143 sires and by 307 maternal grandsires. The statistical model fitted effects of calf sex, parity, cow birth-breeding year or cow-calf birth year, the breed effects and their interactions. Deviations of breed of sire or equivalent grandsire effects on each trait from the mean for Hereford x Angus cows ranged from -1.6 to 5.5 kg (P less than .001) for calf birth weights, -15 to 1% (P less than .001) for calving difficulty, nonsignificant for preweaning calf mortality and -2 to 27 kg (P less than .001) for calf weaning weight. Deviations were nonsignificant for conception rate and calves weaned per cow exposed to breeding, but -2 to 40 kg (P less than .001) for calf weight weaned per cow exposed for breeding, -7 to 78 kg (P less than .001) for cow weight and -20 to 2% (P less than .001) for body condition score. The advantages of Holstein and Brahman cross over Hereford x Angus cows of 23 and 13% in weight of calf weaned/cow-breeding exposure must be compared with the expected greater feed requirements from 7 or 8% heavier cows and at least 50% higher milk production, which emphasizes the need to include input measures and costs in breed evaluation schemes.  相似文献
