1. The effect of supplementing grower diets with bicarbonate or chloride on haematological variables, pulmonary hypertension syndrome and ascites in broilers exposed to cold temperature was investigated. 2. High concentrations of dietary chloride had no effect on the pH of the venous blood but a low chloride/high bicarbonate diet significantly increased blood pH. There was no consistent effect of dietary chloride or bicarbonate concentrations on growth performance, although in 1 experiment birds given a low chloride/high bicarbonate diet consumed less food and gained less weight than controls. 3. Birds fed on high-chloride diets tended to have a higher incidence of ascites and pulmonary hypertension than controls. Birds fed on low-chloride and high-bicarbonate diets had significantly lower pulmonary hypertension and lower heart weights, which may have indicated a decrease in pulmonary and systemic blood pressure. 4. We conclude that increasing dietary bicarbonate and reducing dietary chloride has potential as a low cost and effective method to reduce the pulmonary hypertension which leads to ascites in broiler chickens.  相似文献

Transcatheter coil embolization of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) was performed in 206 dogs between 1994 and 2003 at Texas A&M University, of which 7 (3%) had embolization of coils to the pulmonary vasculature. Thoracic radiographs indicated that coils were located in the right pulmonary artery in 6 of the 7 dogs. Pulmonary perfusion scans were available for review in 5 dogs, and moderate perfusion defects were observed in the right caudal lung lobe in 4 dogs within 24 hours of embolization. Perfusion deficits observed initially in 2 of the dogs resolved on perfusion scans performed at 6 months and 3.1 years. One dog did not have evidence of focal perfusion defects on a perfusion scan performed 4.5 months after embolization. All pulmonary embolizations occurred during the procedure. Attempts at retrieval of coils were unsuccessful in the 2 dogs in which it was attempted. No short- or long-term clinical complications were observed in any of the dogs with pulmonary embolization. We conclude that pulmonary embolization of vascular occlusion coils is an uncommon event and is not typically associated with adverse clinical effects in dogs with PDA.  相似文献

Vascular medial thickening is a prominent finding in people and animals with refractory neonatal pulmonary hypertension. Smooth muscle cells are capable of 2 distinct growth responses in vivo: hypertrophy or hyperplasia. Hypertrophic smooth muscle cells may undergo DNA synthesis without cell division, leading to a polyploid state. To better understand the nature of smooth muscle cell growth in healthy and pulmonary hypertensive neonatal calves, we measured incorporation of the thymidine analog bromodeoxyuridine (BrdUrd) and total DNA content in medial cells from control (pulmonary arterial pressure = 32 +/- 2 mm of Hg) and hypobaric hypoxia-exposed (pulmonary arterial pressure = 120 +/- 7 mm of Hg) calves. Labeling of medial cells with BrdUrd measured by flow cytometry was increased (P < 0.02) in pulmonary arteries of hypoxia-exposed calves (n = 5), compared with control calves (n = 5). Immunohistochemical localization of BrdUrd indicated that BrdUrd labeling of large elastic pulmonary arteries from hypoxia-exposed calves was increased almost exclusively in the outer half of the medial wall. Increased BrdUrd labeling of muscular pulmonary arteries from hypoxia exposed calves was observed in the arterial media and adventitia, and tended to exit in clusters. Analysis of DNA content by flow cytometry indicated a decrease (P < 0.05) in percentage of tetraploid medial cells in pulmonary arteries from hypoxia-exposed calves, compared with control calves. Bivariate analysis for BrdUrd labeling and DNA content of cells from the pulmonary arteries of hypoxia-exposed calves indicated a subpopulation of diploid cells with positive BrdUrd labeling, suggestive of DNA synthesis and subsequent cell division.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was diagnosed in a 3-year-old Basset Hound that was referred to the hospital because of respiratory distress. Results of radiography, bronchoscopy, and pulmonary function tests indicated lung hyperinflation, airflow restriction, and loss of elastic recoil of the lungs. Because of the poor response to treatment, the dog was euthanatized. Postmortem findings revealed emphysema, bronchiectasis, and bronchitis, which comprise chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.  相似文献

Doppler echocardiography is a noninvasive method for estimating and grading pulmonary arterial hypertension. No current literature associates significance of radiographic findings with severity of pulmonary arterial hypertension. We hypothesized that the number and conspicuity of radiographic findings suggestive of pulmonary arterial hypertension would be greater based on the severity of pulmonary arterial hypertension. Dogs with pulmonary arterial hypertension and normal control dogs were included in this retrospective, case control study. Three radiologists blinded to echocardiographic results scored thoracic radiographs for right ventricular and main pulmonary artery enlargement and pulmonary lobar artery enlargement, tortuosity, and blunting by multiple methods. Presence or absence of each finding was scored in an additive fashion and averaged for each grade of pulmonary arterial hypertension severity. Seventy‐one dogs (60 dogs with pulmonary arterial hypertension and 11 control dogs) of which some had multiple studies were included: 20 mild, 21 moderate, 25 severe, and 11 absent pulmonary arterial hypertension. The following radiographic findings were significantly associated with increasing pulmonary arterial hypertension severity: right ventricular enlargement by “reverse D” and “3/5–2/5 cardiac ratio” methods, main pulmonary artery enlargement, and caudal lobar artery enlargement by the “3rd rib” method. Mean scores for severe pulmonary arterial hypertension and normal dogs were significantly different (P‐value < 0.0001). Mean scores between different pulmonary arterial hypertension grades increased with severity but were not statistically significant. Individually and in combination, radiographic findings performed poorly in differentiating severity of pulmonary arterial hypertension. Findings indicated that thoracic radiographs should be utilized in conjunction with Doppler echocardiography in a complete diagnostic work‐up for dogs with suspected pulmonary arterial hypertension.  相似文献

Canine pulmonary eosinophilic granulomatosis is a rare inflammatory pulmonary disease characterized by formation of eosinophilic granulomas that tend to obliterate the normal pulmonary architecture. The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe the CT characteristics of confirmed idiopathic pulmonary eosinophilic granulomatosis in a group of dogs. Five dogs met inclusion criteria. All patients were young adult dogs of variable breeds. No dog had concurrent occult heartworm disease. Computed tomographic characteristics most commonly included pulmonary masses and nodules of variable size, and lesions were most commonly located in the caudal lung lobes. Four dogs had large pulmonary masses with or without additional nodules and one dog had nodular lesions disseminated throughout the entire lung parenchyma. All large eosinophilic granulomas were smoothly margined, heterogeneous pulmonary masses displaying heterogeneous contrast enhancement. A honeycomb‐like enhancement pattern was observed in all but one mass and consisted of multiple hyperattenuating rims delineating central hypoattenuating areas, suggestive of bronchiectatic lung with peripheral enhancing airway walls and fluid‐filled, necrotic bronchial lumen. One dog had evidence of tracheobronchial lymphadenopathy. Findings indicated that canine eosinophilic pulmonary granulomatosis should be included as a differential diagnosis for dogs with CT characteristics of multiple pulmonary masses and/or nodules in caudal lung lobes, and a honeycomb‐like enhancement pattern in masses after intravenous administration of iodinated contrast medium.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the in vivo effect of a single intratracheal inoculation of Pasteurella haemolytica cytotoxin on the rat lung. Changes in the biochemical and cytological composition of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were used to estimate the magnitude of pulmonary cell injury, inflammatory response, vascular permeability and functional status of pulmonary alveolar macrophages. Effect of treatment was compared with rats intratracheally inoculated with supernatants of Pasteurella multocida or with sterile physiological saline solution (vehicle). Results indicated that Pasteurella haemolytica supernatants were not significantly toxic for the lungs of rats.  相似文献

Exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH) is characterised by blood in the airways after strenuous exercise and results from stress failure of the pulmonary capillaries. The purpose of this experiment was to establish a threshold value of transmural pulmonary arterial pressure at which haemorrhage occurs in the exercising horse. Five geldings, age 4-14 years, were run in random order once every 2 weeks at 1 of 4 speeds (9, 11, 13, 15 m/s); one day with no run was used as a control. Heart rate, pulmonary arterial pressure and oesophageal pressure were recorded for the duration of the run. Transmural pulmonary arterial pressure was estimated by electronic subtraction of the oesophageal pressure from the intravascular pulmonary arterial pressure. Within 1 h of the run, bronchoalveolar lavage was performed and the red and white blood cells in the fluid were quantified. Red cell counts in the lavage fluid from horses running at 9, 11 and 13 m/s were not significantly different from the control value, but after runs at 15 m/s, red cell counts were significantly (P<0.05) higher. White cell counts were not different from control values at any speed. Analysis of red cell count vs. transmural pulmonary arterial pressure indicated that haemorrhage occurs at approximately 95 mmHg. Red cell lysis in the lavage fluid was also apparent at transmural pulmonary arterial pressures above 90 mmHg. We conclude that, in the exercising horse, a pulmonary arterial pressure threshold exists above which haemorrhage occurs, and that pressure is often exceeded during high speed sprint exercise.  相似文献

Four young horses of various breeds and suffering from atrial fibrillation died of heart failure. All had markedly high pulmonary arterial pressure, right-sided cardiomegaly, and lack of histologic lesions in the right atrium or pulmonary parenchyma. Three horses had hypertrophy and/or necrosis of the tunica media of the pulmonary vasculature. Clinical signs of disease, physiologic data, and pathologic findings indicated that these horses had primary pulmonary hypertension with secondary right-sided cardiac ventricular hypertrophy and dilatation, atrial fibrillation, and heart failure.  相似文献

Pulmonary edema in a dog with acute pancreatitis and cardiac disease   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Acute pancreatitis and cardiac disease were diagnosed in a dog with pulmonary edema. The early clinical course and initial thoracic radiographs suggested that the pulmonary edema was noncardiogenic. The late clinical course was complicated by heart failure. The dog died, and a necropsy was performed. Histologically, an acute, severe capillary-alveolar membrane lesion was found in the lungs. Review of the human medical literature indicated that respiratory complications, including pulmonary edema, are commonly recognized in people with acute pancreatitis. Furthermore, in acute pancreatitis of human beings, the existence of specific mechanisms of pulmonary injury is suspected. Retrospective consideration of this case suggested that the initial pulmonary edema was induced by acute pancreatitis.  相似文献

The radiographic findings in ten dogs with thoracic actinomycosis are presented. Radiographic findins varied, but pleural effusion, pulmonary infiltrates and mediastinal masses were most commonly found. Rib involvement, commonly accompanying actinomycosis in man, was present in only one dog. The differential diagnosis of actinomycosis includes many disease entities, but based on the radiographic signs it may be possible to narrow down the number of possiblities considerably. A combination of mediastinal or pulmonary masses, pleural effusion and encapsulated fluid is strongly indicative for actinomycosis. For confirmation a bacteriological examination is indicated.  相似文献

A survey designed to obtain information on the indications, contraindications, complications, and methodology of percutaneous lung biopsy in the horse was sent to large animal diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Sixty-five of 190 diplomates returned the survey (response rate: 34%) and 59 of these 65 respondents (91%) indicated that they worked with horses. Forty-four diplomates had performed a percutaneous lung biopsy in 1 or more horses (ie 75% of those diplomates working with horses and 68% of total respondents). Clinical and radiologic diagnoses that prompted diplomates to perform percutaneous lung biopsy in the horse included a pulmonary miliary pattern (93%), suspicion of pulmonary infiltrative disease (91%), suspicion of pulmonary neoplasia (91%), suspicion of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (20%), and suspicion of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) (7%). Only one of the respondents reported the use of percutaneous lung biopsy in the diagnostic workup if pneumonia was suspected, but 11% of respondents reported that suspicion of pulmonary abscessation would prompt them to perform a percutaneous lung biopsy. In contrast, a variable percentage of respondents felt there were contraindications to performance of this technique, which included neonatal septicemia (68%), pulmonary abscessation (65%), pleuropneumonia (55%) and pneumonia (42%), EIPH (41%), and COPD (26%). No respondent indicated that suspicion of neoplasia was a contraindication to percutaneous biopsy. Most common complications observed by respondents were epistaxis (68% of respondents), putative pulmonary hemorrhage (52%), tachypnea (39%), and respiratory distress (32%). Ten of 44 respondents (23%) had not seen any complications with percutaneous lung biopsy. Forty-two of 44 respondents (96%) warned owners about possible complications before performing percutaneous lung biopsy. All respondents to this question reported that they would perform percutaneous lung biopsies in horses in the future, but 4 of 41 would use the procedure only as a last resort.  相似文献

240羽健康AA肉鸡随机均分为试验1组,试验2组和对照组,从8日龄起分别饮用含Na^ 为0.06%、0.12%和0.0%的饮水,其它饲养管理条件相同,分别于12、19、30、34、39日龄抽取各组参试鸡,以右心室(Right ventricle,RV)与全心室(Total ventrcle,TV)的重量比(RV/TV)作为判定肺动脉高压的依据,用图象分析仪对肺细小动脉病理变化作定量检测。结果表明:34、39日龄时,试验1组和试验2组管壁面积/管总面积和中膜厚度占外径百分值明显大于对照组,肺小动脉密度明显低,其RV/TV值均大于0.25,表明试验组肉鸡发生了肺动脉高压。由此可见,由高钠引起肉鸡肺细小动脉血管重构的病变可能参与了肺动脉高压的形成过程。  相似文献

Hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) is a physiological phenomenon in healthy lungs and a regulatory mechanism in alveolar hypoventilation by which blood flow is diverted from poorly ventilated areas to better ventilated alveolar regions. Maintained alveolar hypoxia (related either to respiratory diseases or to high altitude) results in a persistent activation of HPV. The latter mechanism is involved in the development of pulmonary vasoconstriction and right heart failure (Cor pulmonale) in chronic airway diseases. Compared to other species, especially the bovine and the porcine lung is highly susceptible to develop pulmonary hypertension because of anatomical and physiological pecularities. Consequently, therapeutic support of the heart is indicated in cattle and pigs suffering from respiratory diseases. In contrast, non-selective vasodilators are not recommended because they override the compensatory effect of hypoxic vasoconstriction and impair pulmonary gas exchange.  相似文献

利用 4 只与缺氧有关的肉鸡肺动脉高压综合征 自然病鸡和 4 只 同品种、同龄健康肉 鸡,以右心室(right ventricle, R V)与全心室(total ventricle, T V)的重量比( R V/ T V)作为判定肺动脉高压的主要依据,用图像分析仪对 2 组肉鸡肺小动脉作了定量检测。结果显示,肺动脉高压综合征( P H S)患鸡肺小动脉发生了以无肌细动脉肌型化、肌性动脉中膜平滑肌增厚、管壁肥厚为主要特征的血管重构现象,从而说明与缺氧相关的肉鸡肺动脉重构的病理变化可能参与了肉鸡肺动脉高压的形成过程。  相似文献

Of 131 cases of Corynebacterium equi infection in horses submitted for necropsy to the Ontario Veterinary College or Veterinary Laboratory Services, OMAF, Guelph, Ontario from 1958 to 1984, 115 were diagnosed as suppurative pneumonia, and of these 55 had associated ulcerative enterocolitis. Only five animals had intestinal involvement without pulmonary lesions. The remaining 11 cases included arthritis/cellulitis, skin abscesses and submandibular lymphadenitis. While the lung, intestine and associated lymph nodes yielded C. equi most frequently, in 21% of cases C. equi was also cultured from parenchymatous organs (spleen, liver or kidney) or blood. Corynebacterium equi infection accounted for 10% of all foals submitted for postmortem examination and 45% of all foals with pneumonia. Affected foals were one to four months of age. Submissions occurred between the months of May and August with a peak during July. There was a significantly greater prevalence of C. equi infection in Standardbreds when compared with other breeds. Of foals in this study, 36% were from farms which had had other horses succumb to this disease. Of the foals with pulmonary involvement, 21% did not have fever or clinical signs referable to the respiratory or gastrointestinal systems, findings which indicated that a large percentage of cases were subclinical.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare results of the most common diagnostic tests for pulmonary blastomycosis in dogs, identify factors associated with outcome, and determine response to various antifungal treatment protocols. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 125 dogs with pulmonary blastomycosis. PROCEDURES: Medical records were reviewed, and information was obtained regarding diagnostic methods, results of routine laboratory testing, and radiographic response to antifungal treatment. RESULTS: 79 dogs survived, 38 died, and 8 were euthanized. Transthoracic fine-needle aspiration and transtracheal lavage were the most common diagnostic methods. Results of an agar gel immunodiffusion test for antibodies against Blastomyces dermatitidis were negative in 12 of 24 (50%) dogs. Only 3 of 94 (3.2%) dogs in which cytologic or histologic examination or bacterial culture of pulmonary samples were performed had any evidence of concurrent bacterial infection. The half-time for radiographic resolution of pulmonary infiltrates did not vary significantly with antifungal treatment, and use of a loading dosage of itraconazole was not associated with significant improvements in outcome or time to disease resolution. Dogs that died had a higher number of band neutrophils at initial examination, compared with those that survived. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggested that the agar gel immunodiffusion test should not be used as the sole diagnostic test for pulmonary blastomycosis in dogs, that concurrent bacterial pneumonia was uncommon in dogs with pulmonary blastomycosis, and that the rate with which pulmonary infiltrates resolved did not vary significantly among antifungal treatments.  相似文献

There are limited criteria for the detection of pulmonary hypertension in dogs undergoing computed tomography (CT) for pulmonary disease. This retrospective analytical exploratory study compared a CT pulmonary trunk to aorta ratio with echocardiographic estimates of pulmonary hypertension. Dogs having both a contrast thoracic CT and echocardiogram were selected and maximal pulmonary trunk and descending aorta diameters were measured by two observers on a single transverse CT image. Computed tomographic diameter ratios were compared with the echocardiographic parameters of tricuspid regurgitation gradient, right ventricular acceleration time‐to‐ejection time ratio, pulmonary insufficiency gradient, and pulmonary artery to aorta diameter. A total of 78 dogs were sampled, with 44 dogs having one or more finding suggestive of pulmonary hypertension. A moderate positive correlation was shown between tricuspid regurgitation gradient and CT pulmonary trunk to aorta ratio (r = 0.61, P‐value < 0.0001). Mean CT pulmonary trunk to aorta ratio of dogs with moderate (P = 0.0132) and severe (P < 0.0003) pulmonary hypertension were significantly higher than normal dogs. There was no significant difference in mean CT pulmonary trunk to aorta ratio between normal and mild pulmonary hypertension dogs (P = 0.4244). The intraclass correlation coefficient (0.72) showed good reproducibility of the ratio. Findings indicated that CT pulmonary trunk to aorta ratio is a reproducible and potentially useful method to predict moderate and severe pulmonary hypertension in dogs, but not mild pulmonary hypertension. In dogs undergoing thoracic CT for pulmonary disease, an increased ratio should prompt follow up echocardiography.  相似文献
