ABSTRACT

The purpose of the work was to determine the effect of the post-harvest residue biomass of field pea, spring rye and their mixtures on mineral nitrogen content in the soil profile after the forecrop harvest, as well as the yield and quantity of nitrogen accumulated in winter triticale grain. An experiment was conducted to examine the following two factors: (I) forecrop – mixtures: field pea – pure stand 100%, spring rye – pure stand 100%, field pea 75%?+?spring rye 25%, field pea 50%?+?spring rye 50%, field pea 25%?+?spring rye 75%; (II) forecrop harvest date: field pea flowering stage, field pea green pod stage. The results revealed that the lowest mineral nitrogen content in after harvesting spring rye in the flat green pod phase in the soil layer 0–30?cm and 30–60?cm respectively 2.36 and 1.41?mg?kg?1 soil. Also, mineral nitrogen content was low in the 0–30 and 30–60?cm soil layers following field pea/spring rye mixtures, in particular the mixture containing 25?+?75% of the respective components. Winter triticale cultivation after field pea/spring rye mixtures harvested at the stage of field pea flat green pod contributes to high grain yield.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The conducted studies show post-harvest residues of sowing/pea mixtures limit leaching of mineral nitrogen deeper into the soil profile compared to post-harvest residues of sowing peas, as they affect the yield and amount of nitrogen accumulated in hybrid winter rye grain. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of the post-harvest residue biomass of field pea, oat and their mixtures on yielding and quantity of nitrogen accumulated in hybrid winter rye grain. Two factors were examined: factor I ? post-harvest residues of field pea 100% ? pure stand, oat 100% ? pure stand, field pea 75%?+?oat 25%, field pea 50%?+?oat 50%, field pea 25%?+?oat 75%; factor II ? forecrop harvest date: the stage of field pea flowering, the stage of field pea flat green pod. The obtained results demonstrated that the lowest mineral nitrogen content in two soil layers was recorded following oat harvested at the stage of field pea flat green pod. The research revealed that hybrid winter rye cultivated after the mixture consisting of 50% field pea and 50% oat should be recommended for wide agricultural application in order to obtain high grain yield.  相似文献

Abstract

An experiment was conducted in 2004–2007 at the University of Podlasie Zawady Experimental Station (52°06′N, 22°50′E), Siedlce, Poland, to examine the effect of either post-harvest residues or residues and straw of spring triticale (Triticale), field pea (Pisum sativum L.) and their mixtures containing the following proportions of both components: 75+25, 50+50, 25+75% on the subsequent crop of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). A field experiment was designed as split-blocks with three replicates. Residue mass, straw mass as well as N, P, K, Ca and Mg amounts were determined in the residues and straw. The residue amount of spring triticale was the greatest. N, Ca and Mg amounts in the residues of spring triticale/field pea mixtures were similar or higher whereas P and K amounts were similar or lower compared with spring triticale residues. Spring triticale straw contained less N, P, Ca and Mg than the straw of either field pea or spring triticale/field pea mixtures. Grain yield, yield components, N content and N uptake in the grain of winter wheat following field pea and spring triticale/field pea mixtures were significantly higher compared with winter wheat following spring triticale. Increasing proportions of field pea in mixtures with spring triticale cultivated as previous crops significantly increased winter wheat grain yields as well as N content and uptake. The residues of the previous crops combined with the straw significantly increased winter wheat grain yield, number of ears per m2, number of grains in an ear, thousand-grain weight and N content and uptake. The highest winter wheat grain yield and N uptake were determined following an application of residues and straw of field pea and 25+75% spring triticale/field pea mixture. The grain of winter wheat after field pea had the greatest N content.  相似文献

Soil degradation is the single most important threat to global food production and security. Wind and water erosion are the main forms of this degradation, and conservation tillage represents an effective method for controlling this problem. The objective of this study was to quantify the effects of three tillage methods [zero (ZT), minimum (MT) and conventional (CT)] and three four-year crop sequences [spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–spring wheat–winter wheat–fallow; spring wheat–spring wheat–flax (Linum usitatissimum L.)–winter wheat; spring wheat–flax–winter wheat–field pea (Pisum sativum L.] on crop establishment, plant height, seed weight, soil water storage, crop water use, crop water use efficiency and grain yield over a 12-year period under Canadian growing conditions. Plant establishment was not adversely affected by tillage systems or crop sequences except for flax, where a small reduction was observed with ZT and MT. Conservation tillage showed a yield benefit over CT of 7%, 12.5% and 7.4% for field pea, flax and spring wheat grown on cereal stubble, respectively over the 12 years of the study. Much of the yield increase was due to an increase in soil water in the 0–30 cm soil layer with ZT and MT. However, tillage systems had no effect on grain yield for spring wheat grown on fallow and field pea stubble due to a lack of differences in spring soil water content. Flax grown in sequence with cereals only yielded higher than when it was grown in the sequence which included field pea, even though flax was seeded on spring wheat stubble in both cases. Winter wheat yielded higher when grown on flax stubble than on spring wheat stubble. The results indicate that a one-year non-cereal break crop was enough to alleviate the negative effects of consecutive cereal crops on winter wheat. Spring wheat grown on field pea stubble always yielded more than when grown on cereal stubble. A 10% increase in water use efficiency was observed with flax grown with ZT and MT management. Crop sequence improved water use efficiency in flax and spring wheat. Growing spring wheat on field pea stubble as opposed to growing it on cereal stubble resulted in a 10% increase in water use efficiency. Overall, rainfall accounted for 73%, 72%, 67% and 65% of total water used by field pea, flax, winter wheat and spring wheat, respectively. This explains the large year effect as a result of variation in growing (May–August) season precipitation. The non-significant tillage system by year interaction implies that the positive benefits of ZT and MT occur over a wide range of growing conditions, while the absence of a tillage system by crop sequence interaction suggests that knowledge developed under CT management also applies to ZT and MT. The results of this study support the large shifts towards in conservation tillage being observed in the Canadian prairies.  相似文献

Introducing autumn-sown legumes into Central European farming systems could be beneficial for addressing two challenges for European agriculture, i.e., the substantial deficit of protein sources for livestock and expected changes in agroclimatic conditions. Therefore, a two-year field experiment was conucted under Pannonian climate conditions in eastern Austria to assess nitrogen (N) yield and N fixation of several winter faba bean varieties from different European countries as compared to a spring faba bean. Winter wheat was used as a reference crop for estimating atmospheric N fixation. Winter faba beans were susceptible to frost damage especially in the harder of the two winters. Winter faba bean varieties could not achieve a higher grain yield and a higher grain N yield than the spring faba bean but had a higher grain N concentration (except for one variety). Grain yield and grain N yield of faba beans were severely impaired by drought in one year (with a mean of varieties of 8.3 g N m?2, winter wheat: 6.4 g N m?2); in the other year, grain N yield of faba beans considerably surpassed that of winter wheat (with a mean of varieties of 21.5 g N m?2, winter wheat: 8.8 g N m?2). After harvest, faba beans left higher nitrate residues in the soil, especially in the subsoil, and higher amounts of N in above-ground residues compared to winter wheat. Faba beans showed high N fixation under optimum conditions (with a mean of varieties of 21.9 g N m?2) whereas drought considerably impaired N fixation (with a mean of varieties of 6.3 g N m?2; with no differences between autumn- and spring-sown faba beans). In conclusion, growing winter faba bean varieties in eastern Austria did not result in higher grain yield, grain N yield, and N fixation compared to growing a spring faba bean.  相似文献

The identification of suitable crop varieties that respond best to organic management is the key to achieving better crop yields. A field experiment was conducted during the winter season of 2005–2006 and 2006–2007 at Almora (Indian Himalayas) to evaluate the performance of five varieties of garden pea (Pisum sativum L.) and changes in the soil properties under organic and integrated nutrient management (INM) systems. The yield reduction under organic management was 14.4% in 2005–2006 and 10.1% in 2006–2007 compared with INM. Among the garden pea varieties ‘Vivek Matar 9’, ‘Vivek Matar 8’ and ‘Azad pea 1’ produced similar but significantly higher pod yield compared to other varieties. The soil pH, organic carbon, and microbial activities in terms of dehydrogenase and phosphatase (acid and alkaline) were higher in the plots under organic management compared to INM. The latter, however, had higher activity of urease, and N, P, and K contents in soil. We conclude that at least 15–20% price premium for organic garden pea may be required to offset the higher cost of cultivation and low yields under organic production system. Among the garden pea varieties, ‘Azad pea 1’, ‘Vivek Matar 8’ and ‘Vivek Matar 9’ were found suitable for organic cultivation.  相似文献

Abstract

In order to obtain a high and stable yield of organic spring barley, production should be optimized according to the specific environment. To test the performance of spring barley varieties under varying cropping conditions, a field experiment was carried out in 2003 and 2004 in a six-field mixed organic crop rotation. We investigated the choice of variety, the order in a rotation, and the application of manure (slurry and farmyard manure; 0 to 120 total-N ha?1) on grain yields of six selected varieties with different characteristics grown in either pure stands or in two spring barley mixtures, each consisting of three varieties.

Average grain yield of the barley varieties varied between 3.3 t DM ha?1 and 4.1 t DM ha?1. Grain yields of the two mixtures were 4.0 and 3.6 t DM ha?1, respectively. The varieties/mixtures interacted with crop order and year. Foliar diseases were more severe in the barley following grass-clover with large annual differences in the individual diseases. Despite different rooting depths and nutrient uptake patterns, there was no interaction between variety/mixture and the manure input regarding grain yield.

In the 1st year after grass-clover, one of the two mixtures gave higher grain yield than the average yield of the individual varieties in the mixture. This was not the case in the 4th year after grass-clover and for the second variety mixture. Thus, although the present results did not indicate that some barley varieties were better adapted to conditions with low manure input than others, variety mixtures that give a robust and stable organic production may potentially be developed.  相似文献

This study investigates the effect of different crop rotation systems on carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in root biomass as well as on soil organic carbon (SOC ). Soils under spring barley and spring barley/pea mixture were sampled both in organic and conventional crop rotations. The amounts of root biomass and SOC in fine (250–253 μ m), medium (425–250 μ m) and coarse (>425 μ m) soil particulate organic matter (POM ) were determined. Grain dry matter (DM ) and the amount of N in harvested grain were also quantified. Organic systems with varying use of manure and catch crops had lower spring barley grain DM yield compared to those in conventional systems, whereas barley/pea showed no differences. The largest benefits were observed for grain N yields and grain DM yields for spring barley, where grain N yield was positively correlated with root N. The inclusion of catch crops in organic rotations resulted in higher root N and SOC (g C/m2) in fine POM in soils under barley/pea. Our results suggest that manure application and inclusion of catch crops improve crop N supply and reduce the yield gap between conventional and organic rotations. The observed positive correlation between root N and grain N imply that management practices aimed at increasing grain N could also increase root N and thus enhance N supply for subsequent crops.  相似文献

Intercropping is of increasing interest in temperate-arable farming systems. The influence of nitrogen (N) fertilization and sowing ratio on concentrations and uptake of calcium (Ca), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg) and phosphorus (P) by oat and pea was assessed in three substitutive intercrops on a fertile soil in eastern Austria. N decreased Ca in oat grain and increased P in pea grain as well as Ca and Mg in oat residue and Mg and P in pea residue. Intercropping did not affect nutrient concentrations of oat grain, whereas a lower pea share in intercrops increased P in pea grain. In residue, Ca, K and Mg concentrations were higher in oat and Ca and K partly lower in pea with a lower share of each crop. The oat-dominated intercrops could partly achieve a slightly higher total grain nutrient yield than pure stands at no or low N; however, these benefits diminished with a higher pea share and N input. In comparison to pure stands, higher residue nutrient yields were obtained by intercropping in all sowing ratios and fertilization levels. Consequently, oat–pea intercropping can be a strategy for increasing the macronutrient yield of grain and especially of residue for ruminant feeding.  相似文献

Abstract

A three-year field experiment was conducted in Estonia to determine which combinations of pea (Pisum sativum L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), oats (Avena sativa L.) and barley (Hordeum distichon L.) were most suitable for mixed cultivation and the effect of pea on the yield potential of cereals. The inclusion of pea in cereal seeds and the increasing of its seed density led to substantial decreases in the grain yields of the cereal component. The reason for these decreases was the formation of smaller grains in cereals when intercropped with pea. The inclusion of pea in a cereal crop and the increasing of its seed density led to substantial increases in the protein content of the cereal grains. In barley and oats the increases in grain protein content were the lowest of the three cereals. At the same time, the maximum protein yield per area unit in cereals was obtained from plots of pure crops. In a mix with pea, the amounts of nitrogen consumed by cereals decreased and the protein yield of cereals per area unit were reduced in intercrops. Pea-cereal mixes had an advantage over cereal sole crops with regard to protein yield, due to the pea component. Pea-cereal mixes are particularly suitable for the conditions of organic farming, and should be recommended to farmers, as they ensure a relatively good harvest and high protein yield on soil without nitrogen fertilizers. In conclusion, the study showed that, of the three combinations, pea-oat mixed intercrops gave the highest yield of grain and protein yields.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In humid climates, the risk of nitrate leaching and topsoil loss due to erosion is high on bare soil in the fall after potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) harvest and in the spring with snowmelt. This 2-year study (2016–2017) compared three winter cover crops. Two of these are used as cash crops (winter rye [Secale cereale L.], winter wheat [Triticum aestivum L.]), and one is a winter-killed cover crop (spring barley, Hordeum vulgare L.). They were all seeded on two dates after potato harvest (end of September or first week of October) in Prince Edward Island, Canada. The measured parameters included soil nitrate measured at different times in fall and in the following spring and summer, splash detachment, C and N contents in splashed sediments, cereal straw dry matter yield, and cereal grain yield. In both years, all winter cover crops decreased splash detachment compared with the no winter cover control, with winter rye having the greatest reduction. A similar trend was observed for C and N contents in splashed sediments. There was a trend toward lower soil nitrate following winter cover crops in comparison with bare soil, but the trend was not consistent across trials and sampling dates. Winter wheat grain yield ranged from 4.5 to 7.6 Mg ha?1, while that associated with winter rye ranged from 3.2 to 5.1 Mg ha?1. Therefore, winter cereal seeded after potato harvest can constitute a good source of revenue while mitigating the risk of soil erosion and reducing nitrate leaching in some cases.  相似文献

A substantial deficit of protein sources for livestock and expected changes in agro-climatic conditions are two challenges for European agriculture. Both can be addressed by introducing more autumn-sown legumes into Central European farming systems. Therefore, a three-year field experiment was conducted under Pannonian climate conditions in eastern Austria in which several winter faba bean varieties from different European countries were compared to a spring faba bean variety. Winter faba bean was susceptible to frost damage. Best overwintering was observed with the German variety Hiverna and the French variety Diva. Regarding overwintering, the first winter allowed for a clear differentiation between varieties, in the second winter, severe frost caused loss of almost all winter faba bean plants and in the third winter, which was mild, most varieties showed good overwintering. Grain yield of winter faba bean was mainly determined by variations of plants m?2 (i.e. by overwintering) whereas compensatory mechanisms between yield components had a minor influence on yield formation. No grain yield advantage could be observed for winter faba bean varieties compared to the spring faba bean variety even in the year with good overwintering. Regarding yield components, winter faba bean had generally more shoots plant?1 and a higher thousand kernel weight but spring faba bean tended to have more pods shoot?1 and grains shoot?1 whereas pods plant?1, grains plant?1 and grains pod?1 generally did not differ. In conclusion, limited winter hardiness together with the minor influence of compensatory mechanisms between yield components on yield formation are serious constraints for increasing the cultivation of winter faba bean in Central Europe.  相似文献

Abstract

Application of nitrogen (N) in early spring is often recommended for low shoot density winter wheat in northern temperate areas such as Sweden. Regional N-strategy field trials in such areas generally show no relationship between early N and grain yield but the effects on shoot numbers and other yield components are seldom investigated. This study quantified the effect of three N fertilization strategies on the number of tillers at GS30-31 and the grain yield of winter wheat with low shoot density in early spring, in order to evaluate the importance of early N application. The investigations were carried out from 1999–2002 in four annual field experiments on a clay soil in south-west Sweden using winter wheat (cvs. Kosack and Tarso) with shoot densities in early spring ranging from 360–850 shoots m?2. A positive relationship between time of first N application as number of days before GS30 and increase in number of shoots from GS20-21 to GS30-31 was observed. The relationship was strongest in experiments with the lowest shoot density in early spring (360–560 shoots m?2) and the additional increase with each day of earlier availability of N before GS30 was 11 shoots m?2. In wheat with this low shoot density in early spring, N was needed before GS30 to avoid yield reductions. Whether N was applied and available 24 or 13 days before GS30 did not affect yield, despite significantly more shoots being present at GS30-31 with earlier N application.  相似文献

Abstract

Phosphorus (P) fertilizer recommendations for no‐till small grain production are poorly defined. These studies were conducted to determine small grain‐P response relative to the Olsen‐P soil test and compare P‐fertilizer placements with the seed and banded below and to the side of the seed under no‐till field conditions. Phosphorus rates of 0 to 26 kg P/ha were evaluated on seven spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), 11 spring wheat, and six winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) locations in central and northcentral Montana between 1986 and 1990. Grain yield, grain protein, test weight, above‐ground crop yield, plant P concentration at maturity, and P uptake were measured. One winter wheat location had a significant yield response to P; all other locations had non‐significant yield responses. Grain protein, test weight, P concentration, and P uptake were all unaffected by P rate or P placement. Both the ANOVA and paired t‐test were used to analyze the P‐placement data and were all nonsignificant. Slopes of grain yield response (grain yield for each P rate minus the grain yield without P), P concentration, and P uptake versus P rate were analyzed with the t‐test; none of the P‐response slopes were greater than zero. The P responses by individual crop were regressed against P rate, Olsen‐P soil test, available soil water at planting, and pH. Phosphorus rate was not a significant factor in any of the equations. Significant and useful predictive equations for grain yield response could not be generated; however, equations predicting P concentration and P uptake were developed. The Cate‐Nelson graphical analysis was unsuccessful in estimating an Olsen‐P soil test critical level. All attempts failed to relate grain yield or grain yield response to the Olsen‐P soil test and/or P rate. When P soil tests are higher than 12 mg/kg, no‐till grain growers should consider applying a maintenance level of P fertilizer, about 5 to 10 kg P/ha either banded below or with the seed, to maintain soil P levels.  相似文献

The establishment of cover crops, in relay, to minimise soil erosion, improve soil physical condition and provide a main-season crop in rotation with potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a recommended agronomic practice in Atlantic Canada. This is usually achieved by seeding winter rye (Secale cereale L.) or winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) immediately after potato harvest for ground cover followed, the next spring, by inter-seeding an annual or biennial forage crop by drilling. Spring drill seeding can, however, be delayed or prevented by wet ground conditions, thus, making broadcast seeding a considered alternative. This study examined, therefore, the comparative merits of spring broadcast seeding and drill seeding of two adapted forages, Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), into a standing crop of fall-seeded winter rye or winter wheat. Crop performance was evaluated, using meter-square quadrats, as ground coverage and grain yield (of cereals). Soil compaction, evaluated as shear strength in the 0–15 cm layer (avoiding wheel tracks) of a fine sandy loam (Orthic Podzol), was greater after drill seeding than after broadcast seeding by a factor of 7.2% and was attributed to the greater ground-contact mass of the drill seeder. The forage crops provided 5.5% more ground coverage with drill seeding than with broadcast seeding. However, seeding method had no effect on the cereal host crops' ground coverage or grain yield. Ryegrass coverage was 123% of red clover coverage and winter rye coverage was 176% of winter wheat coverage. Forage coverage, in this study, suffered no setback because of the greater soil compaction associated with drill seeding. However, soils are subject to greater compaction under wetter conditions, thus, broadcast seeding is expected to be a better option, the wetter the spring.  相似文献

Ridgetops in the dryland farming region of eastern Washington suffer from low productivity and poor soil quality from years of erosion. Two studies investigated the effectiveness of soil amendments in restoring soil quality. Study 1 treatments were two rates of compost and a control. Study 2 treatments were compost, coal ash, wheat straw, three rates of inorganic N, and a control. A wide array of soil biological, chemical and physical parameters were measured from 1995 to 1997 and yield of spring barley, spring pea, and winter wheat were measured in different years from 1995 though 1998. In study 1, compost plus N increased barley yield and soil pH. Compost without N in study 2 increased total soil C and continued to immobilize soil N 2 years after incorporation because of the high C:N ratio of the compost. Total soil N, available P and K, some micronutrients, and cation exchange capacity were increased by the compost. Compost reduced soil bulk density and soil impedance, while increasing water-stable aggregates and improving infiltration. Coal ash slightly suppressed phosphatase activity, while tending to increase pH and soil B, and improving infiltration. Straw decreased soil bulk density and microbial activity in 1996 only. Barley grain trace element uptake, barley yield, and pea yield were uninfluenced by amendments. In 1998, 3 years after application of the amendments, winter wheat yield was significantly higher from the compost application than from any other treatments. Compost had the greatest benefit to improving soil quality and crop yield.  相似文献

Abstract

Soil acidity is one of the major yield constraints to crop production in various parts of the world. Quantifying optimum soil acidity indices is an important strategy for achieving maximum economic crop yields on acid soils. Five field experiments were conducted for three consecutive years using dry bean as a test crop on an Oxisol. The lime rates used were 0, 12, and 24 Mg ha?1 for creating a wide range of soil acidity indices in a no‐tillage cropping system. Grain yield of dry bean was significantly increased by improving soil pH, base saturation, calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and potassium (K) saturation and reducing aluminum (Al) saturation. These soil acidity indices were higher in the 0‐ to 10‐cm soil layer than the 10‐ to 20‐cm soil layer for maximum grain yield. Across two soil depths, optimum values for maximum bean yield were pH 6.5, base saturation 67%, Ca saturation 48%, and Mg saturation 19%. Bean yield linearly increased with increasing K saturation in the range of 1.5 to 3% across two soil depths. There was a significant linear decrease in grain yield with increasing Al saturation in the range of 0 to 8% across two soil depths. Optimal values of soil indices for maximum bean yield can be used as a reference for liming and improving yield of bean crop on Oxisols in a no‐tillage cropping system. Yield components, such as pod number, grain per pod, and 100‐grain weight were significantly improved with liming, and bean yield was significantly associated with these yield components.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Biotic interaction of cover crops (CCs) can have a legacy effect on succeeding crops mediated by changes in nutrient dynamics. Depending on species, CCs influence nitrogen (N) dynamics by sequestering N and subsequent N release. Interactions of three CC species, Austrian Pea (Pisum sativum L.), winter rye (Secale cereal L.), and winter camelina (Camelina sativa L.), and three different soils were studied under greenhouse conditions on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grain yield and soil N availability. CCs were grown for two months and then incorporated, followed by the planting of wheat. CC biomass production ranged from 0.10 to 2.05 Mg ha?1 in this order by species: Pea> Rye> Camelina. Biomass production by soil was in the order of Casselton>Ada>Minot. Succeeding wheat grain yield and grain N uptake was highest under pea in the order of pea>camelina>control>rye. Rye reduced grain yield and N uptake. Wheat yield ranged from 2.19 to 3.24 Mg ha?1 depending on CC species-soil interaction. The N balance showed a 3–79% higher N surplus with the CCs. The N balance ranged from 78 kg N ha?1 for the control to 140 kg N ha?1 for pea. N surplus was greater for a pea in all soils, indicating pea can be regarded as an effective cover that can efficiently recycle N and provide additional agronomic benefits. Greater N balance with CCs shows that CCs can increase the amount of N accounted for in the system, which can significantly affect the N dynamics throughout the growing season.  相似文献

Differences in nitrogen (N) use by different varieties of rice (Oryza sativa L.) have been reported by numerous researchers. Some have indicated that N fertilization required for maximum yield differs between modern varieties and old varieties (varieties no longer in production); others have suggested that among modern varieties, semidwarf varieties require higher N rates than taller varieties. The objectives of this study were to evaluate differences in dry matter and N accumulation among modern long‐grain varieties in relation to plant stature (tall versus semidwarf) and maturity group (early versus very early), and to compare old varieties and modern varieties. A greenhouse pot experiment with Crowley silt loam (fine, montmorillonitic, thermic Typic Albaqualf) was conducted to compare old and modern long‐grain varieties at 52 days after sowing. Based on the results of the pot experiment, three varieties each from six variety groups (old varieties, modern medium‐grain varieties, and four groups of modern long‐grain varieties) were planted in the field on Crowley silt loam soil. Each variety was fertilized with three preflood N levels (0, 67, and 135 kg N ha‐1). Plants were harvested 49 days after sowing and 25 days after 50% heading. Old and modem long‐grain varieties did not differ in total N accumulation at any N level. However, long‐grain varieties produced more grain than the old varieties at all N levels, and among long‐grain varieties, semidwarf varieties produced more grain than tall varieties when 135 kg N ha‐1 were applied. Early and very early varieties did not differ in total N accumulation or grain yield. Varieties that produced a higher grain yield did so by partitioning more N to grain than straw. Modern medium‐grain varieties accumulated more N than old and long‐grain varieties and produced more grain with both 67 and 135 kg N ha‐1. Medium‐grain varieties had a higher harvest index and physiological efficiency than old varieties but did not differ from long‐grain varieties. This suggests that medium‐grain varieties also partition more of their N into grain than straw and possibly are able to absorb more N from soil than old or long‐grain varieties.  相似文献
