The effects of tannins on adult populations of Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Teladorsagia circumcincta in goats are characterised mainly by a decrease in egg excretion without any significant changes in worm number. In contrast, the impact of tannins on T. colubriformis or T. circumcincta third-stage larvae (L3) is associated with a significant reduction in worm establishment. The objective of the present study was to examine the effects of quebracho extract tannins on H. contortus L3. The consequences of consumption of sainfoin hay were also examined. Twenty-one na?ve kids were divided into three experimental groups. Group Q received quebracho extract and group S received sainfoin hay from days D3 to D5. Group C remained as an infected control group. All kids received 1500 L3 H. contortus on D0, D1 and D2. On D18, post-infection, the kids were slaughtered and the worm populations compared in the different groups. Compared to the control values, the worm counts decreased, respectively, by 33% and 38% in groups Q and S but the differences were not significant. No differences were found in pathophysiological measurements between the three groups. The results confirm differences in tannin effect according to nematode species but not parasitic stage.  相似文献

The frequency, distribution and repeatability of measurements related to infection with gastrointestinal nematodes have been estimated in dairy goats. Monthly faecal and blood samples were taken over two grazing seasons from a flock of 120 naturally infected goats. The frequency distribution of egg excretion was positively skewed at each sampling date, suggesting an aggregative distribution of parasites. Overdispersed distributions were also apparent for pepsinogen and inorganic phosphate values. Repeatabilities for each parameter were estimated within each year. The values ranged between 0.23 to 0.43 and were relatively similar during the 2 years, with the highest coefficients recorded for pepsinogen. For each parameter, moderate to high repeatabilities were also estimated between the 2 years. Overall, the data suggest that, in dairy goats, the distribution of worms is overdispersed with a few individuals repeatedly harbouring large worm populations. These results have practical implications for genetic selection for resistance to worm infection and for selective administration of anthelmintics.  相似文献

A field trial, conducted over two consecutive years, was aimed at assessing the efficacy of the administration of spores of the nematophagous fungus Duddingtonia flagrans to young goats for the control of nematode parasite infections on a French commercial dairy goat flock. For both years, the first-year grazing kids were divided into two similarly managed groups (fungus and control groups): in 2003 a daily dose rate of 5 × 105 spores/kg body weight was given to the fungus-group animals, while in 2004 a daily dose rate of 106 spores/kg body weight was used; the other half of the kids, acting as control, did not receive the spores. Parameters measured every 3 weeks included nematode egg excretion, larval development in faecal cultures and pasture larval counts. Additionally, at the beginning, the middle and the end of each grazing season, the goats were weighed and blood samples for pepsinogen determination were collected. In 2003, similar results were recorded for all the measured parameters in the control and fungus groups. In contrast, in 2004, the kids receiving the spores showed lower faecal egg counts and pepsinogen levels at the end of the season and higher growth rate compared to kids of the control group.  相似文献

Resistance to anthelmintics in nematode parasite of the digestive tract is a major concern in small ruminants and particularly in goats. One possible solution to limit the development and spread of resistance is to give treatments on a selective basis, i.e. by targeting the most susceptible animals within a flock rather than treating all the animals. In dairy goats, epidemiological studies have shown that, within a flock, goats in first lactation and the multiparous ones with the highest level of milk production were highly receptive to parasite infection. The objective of the study was to assess whether selective treatments could achieve a level of control of nematodes similar to systematic drenching. A similar experimental design was applied for two successive years. An experimental flock of 120 dairy goats was divided into two groups. All the goats from group SYS (systematic treatment) were drenched at mid-grazing season (July). In contrast, anthelmintics in group SEL (selective treatment) were restricted to the goats in first lactation plus the high producers. Overall, these treated goats represented 48% of the flock in year 1 and 66% in year 2. After treatments, both groups grazed on separate pastures. Parasitological and pathophysiological measurements were performed monthly. The results indicate a similar level of egg excretion in the two groups. The pathophysiological parameters (pepsinogen and phosphate concentrations) were also similar in the two groups, as well as the milk production for the 2 years. These results suggest that a targeted use of anthelmintics may allow efficient control of gastrointestinal nematodes whilst resulting in a predicted reduction in the selection pressure for the development of anthelmintic resistance.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to examine the effect of dried and ensiled sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) on established populations of Haemonchus contortus (abomasum) and Cooperia curticei (small intestine) in lambs under controlled conditions. Twenty-four parasite na?ve lambs were inoculated with a single dose of infective larvae of these parasites 28 days prior to the start of the feeding experiment. Twenty-four days post-infection, 4 days prior to the start of the feeding experiment, animals were allocated to four groups according to egg excretion, live weight and sex. Groups A and B received sainfoin hay and control hay, respectively, for 16 days. Groups C and D were fed on sainfoin silage or control silage for the same period. Feeds were offered ad libitum and on the basis of daily refusals were supplemented with concentrate in order to make them isoproteic and isoenergetic. Individual faecal egg counts on a dry matter basis (FECDM) were performed every 3-4 days and faecal cultures and packed cell volume (PCV) measurements were done weekly. After 16 days of experimental feeding, all animals were slaughtered and adult worm populations were determined. The consumption of conserved sainfoin was associated with a reduction of adult H. contortus (47% in the case of hay, P<0.05; 49% in the case of silage, P=0.075) but had little effect on adult C. curticei. Compared to the controls, H. contortus specific FECDM was reduced by 58% (P<0.01) in the sainfoin hay group and by 48% (P=0.075) in the sainfoin silage group. For both sainfoin feeds FECDM specific to C. curticei were significantly decreased when compared to the control feeds (hay 81% and silage 74%, both tests P<0.001). Our data suggest that different mechanisms were responsible for the reduction in FECDM in response to feeding tanniferous fodder. For H. contortus, the decrease seemed to be due to a nematocidal effect towards adult H. contortus. In contrast for C. curticei, the reduction in FECDM appeared to be a result of a reduced per capita fecundity. For both, hay and silage, an antiparasitic effect could be shown, offering promising perspectives for the use of conserved tanniferous fodder as a complementary control approach against GIN.  相似文献

A high level of host resistance to Trichostrongylus colubriformis was established in a group of Saanen goats infected weekly with 10,000 infective larvae for 10 weeks, treated with an anthelmintic and then challenged twice with 50,000 larvae, with a further anthelmintic treatment 28 days after the first challenge. A second group of goats exposed only to the two challenge infections developed worm burdens intermediate between, and significantly different from, the first group and a third control group given only the second challenge infection. Nematode fecundity (eggs per female) and male:female ratios were also significantly decreased in the first two groups. Faecal egg counts and worm counts were highly correlated and this relationship was dominated by the influence of the number of eggs/female nematode. The goats were approximately 9 months old at the start of the experiment.  相似文献

Gastrointestinal (GI) nematode infection is a major constraint for grazing livestock production. The increasing prevalence and severity of anthelmintic-resistant nematodes in many parts of the world has led to a search for non-chemical control options. Under experimental conditions, the nematophagous fungus Duddingtonia flagrans is emerging as an alternative to chemotherapy for the control of GI nematode infection in biological production systems. Also, recent information points to the role of energy nutrition to increase the immune response against GI nematode infection. In this study the effect of D. flagrans and energy supplementation on the epidemiology of GI nematode infections is explored on grazing kids. Four groups of 10, 4-month old goats were turned out on infected pasture in the early spring and allocated to four separate paddocks where they were rotationally grazed for 16 weeks. One of these groups (F) received 0.5 x 10(6) D. flagrans spores/kg BW/d. Another group (S) was supplemented with 100 g barley grain per day. A third group (F+S) received both nematophagous fungi and barley supplement treatments simultaneously while the fourth group (C) was used as a non-treated control. Both nematophagous fungi and barley supplement had a significant effect (P<0.01) on reducing pasture infectivity, faecal egg excretion and worm burdens at slaughter that was particularly evident for Trichostrongylus colubriformis. The combination of both treatments showed a synergistic effect on the control of gastrointestinal nematode infections. At slaughter, the average total post-mortem worm count of the F+S group was reduced by 65% compared with the non-treated control. The results herein show that D. flagrans can act as an efficient biological control agent against kid GI nematode infections on pasture, which could further improve carcass characteristics. While small amounts of energy supplement can also reduce kid infection, the effect of D. flagrans as a biological control agent appeared clearly enhanced both in magnitude and duration by energy supplementation. This has clear implications for grazing animals and provides an efficient method for the practical control of parasitic nematodes in biological production systems.  相似文献

The response of Awassi sheep and the local breed of Iraqi goats to primary infection with a prevalent trichostrongylid nematode, Haemonchus contortus, was compared by examining their worm burden and the pathogenic effects of the parasite on these hosts following experimental infection. The results showed that the goats had lower worm burdens and had suffered less severe clinical and haematological disturbances than the Awassi sheep. The worm counts in sheep were higher than in goats but the count of the mucosal phase of the larvae was higher in goats. These differences are possibly immunologic in origin though a genetic resistance may operate, primarily at the level of worm establishment. The pathophysiological changes are correlated with parasitological and clinical observations in the two host species.  相似文献

The consumption of tannin-rich (TR) forages has been associated with negative effects against gastrointestinal nematodes and with an improved host resilience. It has been hypothesized that tannins affect the capacity of infective larvae to establish in the mucosae of the host. In this study, we aimed at testing this hypothesis using Lysiloma latisiliquum, a tropical TR tree. The objectives were: (i) to evaluate the effect of the consumption of L. latisiliquum on the establishment of nematode third-stage larvae (L3) in goats; (ii) to define the role of tannins in these effects in vivo by using an inhibitor (polyethylene glycol, PEG); and (iii) to examine a possible indirect effect of tannins on the inflammatory response in the digestive mucosa. Eighteen Criollo goats composed three experimental groups. The control group received fresh leaves of Brosimum alicastrum, a plant with a low level of tannins. Two groups received L. latisiliquum leaves either with (L.L.+PEG) or without (L.L.) daily addition of 25g PEG. After a 7-day adaptation period, each goat was infected with both Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis (3000 L3 per species). The goats were slaughtered 5 days after infection and worm counts and histological analyses were performed. No difference in the voluntary feed intake of foliage was observed between the 3 groups. The consumption of L. latisiliquum significantly reduced the larval establishment of both nematode species compared to the control (P<0.01). For both worm species, the effects were totally alleviated with PEG (L.L.+PEG group), suggesting a major role of tannins in the observed effects. Only minor differences in the mucosal cellular response were observed between the 3 groups. These results confirm that the consumption of TR plants reduces the establishment of nematode larvae in the host and that a direct effect is principally involved.  相似文献

Tanniferous temperate legumes are assumed to possess anthelmintic properties, but it is unclear whether this is the direct result of condensed tannins (CT) or is mediated indirectly via an improved metabolic protein supply. A metabolism experiment was conducted to differentiate between these factors by feeding the CT plant sainfoin (19.7% CP in DM) to lambs infected with the abomasal blood-sucking nematode Hemonchus contortus. A total of 18 infected lambs were fed sainfoin either untreated or treated with polyethylene glycol, a CT-inactivating agent, or a grass-clover mixture (13.2% CP in DM) over 3 wk (n = 6). Six uninfected lambs received the grass-clover mixture as a control. In addition to indicators of infection (fecal egg count, packed-cell volume, abomasal worm burden, and serum protein), nutrient digestibility, the balance of N and selected minerals, ruminal fluid characteristics, and plasma AA levels were determined mostly in the final experimental week. The specific effects of the sainfoin CT, the extra CP with sainfoin, and the infection were statistically evaluated by contrast analysis. The sainfoin CT exerted no beneficial effects on resilience to nematode infection and exerted only minor effects on ruminal ammonia or blood urea concentrations and the excretory pattern of N. Plasma alanine, aspartate, and proline concentrations tended to be greater (P < or = 0.09) because of the sainfoin CT, whereas the other AA remained unaffected. Intake of the mineral supplement was lower (P < 0.001) for lambs fed sainfoin compared with those fed sainfoin treated with polyethylene glycol. Feeding the high-protein sainfoin instead of the grass-clover mixture increased (P < 0.001) N retention and apparent OM digestibility, whereas digestibility of NDF and ADF were decreased (P < 0.001). Feeding sainfoin also decreased (P < or = 0.04) plasma alanine, glycine, isoleucine, and total nonessential AA compared with the grass-clover mixture. Although fecal egg count, worm burden, and packed cell volume were not affected by the greater CP supply associated with sainfoin feeding, serum albumin level was increased (P = 0.008). The lack of effects of sainfoin on resilience to nematode infection might have been the result of the unexpectedly low CT content (3.6% in DM) of the material used. It cannot be excluded that longer term feeding of this batch of sainfoin might have been effective.  相似文献

The level of dietary protein is known to alter the establishment and the pathophysiology of gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep. On the other hand, high-producing dairy goats are less resistant and/or resilient than low-producing ones to experimental nematode infection. During a 2-year study, we have investigated the course of a natural nematode infection (mainly T. colubriformis) in a high-producing dairy goat flock. In year 1, 50 grazing goats divided in high (HP) or low producer (LP) were compared from April to October for parasitological and milk parameters. In year 2, the 25 HP goats were only considered and were allocated to two levels of dietary protein, high level (HPr) with a protein coverage of 125% or normal level (NPr) with a protein coverage of 106%. They were monitored as above. In year 1, HP goats showed a greater nematode egg output (1856 vs. 1000epg) associated with higher values in T. colubriformis IgG in autumn than LP ones whereas the decrease in serum phosphate concentration was similar in both groups. In year 2, HPr goats exhibited lower egg output in autumn (2219 vs. 2817) vs. NPr ones. Moreover, milk yield and fat content were significantly higher in HPr vs. NPr in the 2nd part of the study. HP goats are less resistant to nematode infection in natural conditions. Resistance and resilience of HP goats may partially be improved by a protein supplementation in the diet.  相似文献

Developing effective biological control without the systematic use of anthelmintics is necessary to reduce the impact of gastrointestinal nematodes on small ruminants. Therefore, grazing management systems that use different host species to dilute nematodes in pasture appear to be promising for worm control. A trial was carried out to investigate the specificity of Haemonchus contortus for goats and cattle and to evaluate cross-infection between ruminant species. The effect of an experimental infection of 12 heifers by the free-living stages of H. contortus collected from goats (500 larvae per kg liveweight) was evaluated and compared to uninfected controls. After 28 and 35 days, egg excretion was measured. The experimental infection of heifers by H. contortus was not significant, with no egg excretion. These results, i.e., the lack of cross-infection of GIN between goats and cattle, suggest that integrated grazing using such animals could be employed for pasture dilution and decontamination.  相似文献

A study was conducted in order to examine the possible influence of feeding behaviour on differences in the diversity and the intensity of nematode infections of the gastrointestinal tract between two breeds of goats placed in the same rangeland environment. Within the same flock bred on rangeland conditions, 10 Saanen dairy goats and 14 Angora goats were surveyed for 5 months (from May to September) and parasitological and behavioural parameters were measured. The level of nematode infection was estimated by monthly measurements of faecal egg counts whereas the feeding behaviour was assessed every fortnight. During the whole survey, nematode egg excretion was repeatedly higher in the Angora goats compared to the Saanen ones and significant differences were observed in May and September. This difference in egg excretion was related to major difference in feeding behaviour between the two breeds. In contrast with the Saanen does, Angora goats did not show any browsing and resting activities at any date of observation. Hence, Angora goats can be considered mainly as grazers whereas Saanen goats exhibit feeding activities close to browsers. The relative influence of feeding behaviour and host immune response on the susceptibility to gastrointestinal nematode infection in goats is discussed.  相似文献

The chemoprophylactic efficacy of a single dose of the 10% long acting (LA) injectable formulation of moxidectin on nematode infections in calves, was evaluated. Two similar groups of 11 female, first grazing season Holstein calves were turned out in early May on separate plots of a single, naturally infected pasture. Until 56 days post-treatment (pt), the percentage reduction in faecal egg output was 100%, remaining above 90% during the entire trial, except for day 126 pt. More than 90% of the larvae in the treated group were identified as Cooperia until 140 days after treatment and more than 70% during the rest of the trial, whereas in the control group Cooperia was the most abundant species until day 84 pt and Ostertagia from 126 days pt onwards. The reduction in faecal egg output in the treated group was reflected in the mean pepsinogen levels being below the pathogenic threshold at the end of the grazing season (1.8 units of tysrosine (U tyr)) and the absence of diarrhoea during the second half of the grazing season. In the control group pepsinogen levels remained high (mean: 5.5 U tyr) and prolonged diarrhoea occurred in the second half of the grazing season. Furthermore, the weight gain for the treated group at the end of the grazing season was 41.9 kg higher than for the control group. At necropsy, the reduction in O. ostertagi worm burden in the treated group was 97.5% compared to the control group, while the reduction in C. oncophora worm burden was 57%. An additional benefit of the long acting parasitological control, was reduced pasture contamination.  相似文献

Worm egg counts of yearling Angora or Merino wethers grazing in mixed flocks at either 4/ha or 8/ha were observed over a 5 month period. Based on faecal egg counts infection levels in the sheep increased for the first 3 months and then decreased as the animals developed resistance. Egg counts in the goats did not decrease during the experiment. Post mortem worm counts indicated that there was a significant host species--stocking rate interaction on worm burdens of Haemonchus contortus adults and Ostertagia circumcincta adults and larvae. Goats had more H. contortus and O. circumcincta adults than sheep at the 8/ha stocking rate. At 4/ha goats had fewer O. circumcincta fourth stage larvae than sheep. There was no stocking rate effect on the numbers of Trichostrongylus axei or T. colubriformis. Sheep had more T. axei and fewer T. colubriformis than goats.  相似文献

The purpose of this experiment was to determine if an earlier infection with Oestrus ovis would down regulate an infection with Trichostrongylus colubriformis when the larvae of O. ovis were expelled from the nasal cavities of sheep by a specific treatment. Three groups of five lambs were used: group 1 was artificially infected with O. ovis larvae and later with T. colubriformis, group 2 received O. ovis larvae and later was treated with ivermectin 14 days before being infected with T. colubriformis. Group 3 was infected with T. colubriformis only. The criteria examined were: the effects on nematode egg excretion, worm fecundity, nematode burdens and the kinetics of blood eosinophils. Significant decreases of nematode egg excretion, worm fecundity, nematode burdens were observed in group 1 compared to group 3. However, no changes were observed in either group 2 or 3. In group 2 it was noted that antiparasitic treatment induced a rapid decrease in blood eosinophils to a range close to the non-infected control group and this was associated with the removal of the down regulation effects of nematode burdens. This experiment showed that there is no cross immunity between O. ovis and T. colubriformis and that eosinophils may act against any parasite without specific priming.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to determine the dynamics of infestation of cattle and pasture by gastrointestinal nematodes in a mild humid environment in northwestern Spain. For this, infestation of pasture by free-living stages (L3), dynamics of faecal egg output, blood pepsinogen levels and worm burden in slaughtered animals were quantified. The results showed a high degree of annual variability, which was dependent on weather conditions. The seasons were clearly defined in the study area, with mild humid winters and relatively dry summers registered throughout the years of the study. Infestation of pasture by larvae varied from year to year, peaking during August in the first year, between August and December in the second year, and during October in the third year. The annual variation was mainly due to weather conditions, particularly the amount of rain in summer. The patterns of faecal egg output were similar in the first and third grazing seasons, with maximum levels observed in May/June; however, in the second year, the peak was reached in October. Blood pepsinogen levels increased from pasture turnout (March/April) until the end of the grazing season (November/December), reaching maximum values from August/September onwards. The nematode parasite species identified at necropsy were Ostertagia osteragi, O. lyrata, Cooperia oncophora, C. macmasteri, C. punctata and Trichuris ovis, with O. ostertagi and C. oncophora predominating. In faecal cultures, the following genera were also identified: Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus, Nematodirus, Bunostomum, Oesophagostomum and Strongyloides. There was a significant correlation (r=0.97, P<0.01) between worm burden (Ostertagia spp.) and pasture infestation (Ostertagia L3) 3 weeks prior to slaughter of the calves, and also between blood pepsinogen levels and pasture infestation by Ostertagia L3 (r=0.33, P<0.02). Correlations between worm burden and faecal egg output and between blood pepsinogen level and faecal egg output were not significant. The results obtained in the present study confirm that there is annual variability in the time-course of nematodosis in cattle, and demonstrate the importance of weather, particularly summer rainfall, in an Atlantic temperate environment.  相似文献

We investigated direct anthelmintic effects associated with the feeding of fresh tanniferous forages against established populations of Haemonchus contortus and Cooperia curticei in lambs. Twenty-four parasite naive lambs were inoculated with a single dose of infective larvae of these two parasites 27 days prior to the start of the feeding experiment. Lambs were individually fed with either chicory (Cichorium intybus), birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) or a ryegrass/lucerne mixture (control) for 17 days. Animals where then united to one flock and subjected to control feeding for another 11 days to test the sustainability of potentially lowered egg excretion generated by tanniferous forage feeding. When compared to the control, administration of all tanniferous forages was associated with significant reductions of total daily faecal egg output specific to H. contortus (chicory: 89%; birdsfoot trefoil: 63%; sainfoin: 63%; all tests P<0.05) and a tendency of reduced H. contortus worm burden (chicory: 15%; birdsfoot trefoil: 49% and sainfoin: 35% reduction). Irrespective of the condensed tannin (CT) containing fodder, no anthelmintic effects were found against C. curticei. Cessation of CT-feeding followed by non-CT control feeding did not result in a re-emergence of faecal egg counts based on faecal dry matter (FECDM) in any group, suggesting that egg output reductions are sustainable. The moderate to high concentrations of CTs in birdsfoot trefoil (15.2 g CTs kg(-1) dry matter (DM)) and sainfoin (26.1 g CTs kg(-1) DM) were compatible with the hypothesis that the antiparasitic effect of these forages is caused by their content of CTs. For chicory (3 g CTs kg(-1) DM), however, other secondary metabolites need to be considered. Overall, birdsfoot trefoil and in particular sainfoin seem promising candidates in contributing to an integrated control strategy against H. contortus not only by mitigating parasite related health disturbances of the host but also by a sustained reduction of pasture contamination.  相似文献

Two experiments were done to evaluate the effectiveness of a slow-release, morantel tartrate, anthelmintic bolus for controlling parasitic gastroenteritis in replacement dairy heifers. In experiment 1, good control of nematode contamination of pasture was indicated by lower worm burdens in tracer calves that grazed with 15 heifers treated orally with a single bolus and by significantly decreased numbers of nematode eggs in the feces of the 15 treated heifers, as compared with numbers of eggs in the feces of 15 nontreated control calves. Significant differences in weight gain were not seen between treated and nontreated heifers, probably due to low amounts of larval exposure, the small number of heifers evaluated, and parasitic resistance in the heifers, which may have developed as a result of prestudy exposure to contaminated pasture. In experiment 2, done 1 year after the 1st experiment, using the same pastures that were used in experiment 1, young heifers were used. Many of the heifers were parasite naive at the beginning of the experiment (ie, nematode eggs were not found before the experiment). Treatment with the bolus was effective in controlling parasitic gastroenteritis in the heifers and in controlling nematode contamination of pasture. Compared with nontreated heifers, treated heifers had significantly higher cumulative weight gains, a significant decrease in plasma pepsinogen concentrations, and a significant decrease in worm egg excretion. The number of worms acquired by tracer calves that were grazed with treated heifers was significantly less than for tracer calves that were grazed with nontreated heifers.  相似文献

Effect of sericea lespedeza [SL; Lespedeza cuneata (Dum-Cours.) G. Don.] leaf meal feeding was evaluated in two experiments in indoor reared goats with experimental infection of Haemonchus contortus larvae. In the first experiment, ten 8-10 month old male Spanish and Alpine cross kids pair matched for body weight and age were fed SL or bermudagrass [BG; Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] hay one week before infection and were infected with 5000 H. contortus L(3). The animals were maintained on the same diet for the remaining period and were slaughtered 28 days post-infection (DPI) to determine the establishment of incoming infective larvae. Goats fed SL had lower establishment (P<0.05) of H. contortus larvae than that of the control goats fed BG hay. In the second experiment, twenty-five 8-10 months old male Alpine cross, Saanen, Nubian×Saanen and Spanish kids reared in confinement on BG were experimentally infected with 5000 H. contortus L(3). On 35 DPI, the animals were allocated to two groups after blocking by fecal egg count (FEC), and one group was fed SL leaf meal (n=13), and another control group remained on BG (n=12). Four goats/group were slaughtered successively on days 7, 14, and 28 days post SL feeding, except on day 7, when five SL fed goats were slaughtered. Fecal egg counts and blood packed cell volume (PCV) were measured at weekly intervals and worm count, female worm fecundity, worm length and mucosal eosinophils, mast cells and globule leucocytes were measured after slaughter. Goats fed SL had a lower FEC (P<0.05) one week after feeding, as compared to those fed on BG, and the values remained at low level thereafter. Similarly, PCV was also significantly affected by feeding (P<0.01), and feeding and time interaction (P<0.05). However, worm burden, female worm fecundity, parasite length, and mucosal inflammatory cell count were similar between the groups. Feeding SL reduced the establishment of infective larvae and FEC of H. contortus in experimental studies and this plant could be used for biological control of parasite infection under field conditions to limit the harmful effects of the parasites in goats.  相似文献
